Grammar: When to Use Do, Does, and Did

Grammar: When to Use Do, Does, and Did

3-minute read

  • 12th August 2022

Verbs are essential to creating complete sentences, as they help us express physical actions ( She jumped in the puddle) , mental actions ( He thought about puppies) , and states of being ( I am hungry) .

There are several types of verbs that can each be written in different tenses, so they can be tricky to work with, especially if English isn’t your first language . We’ve put together a guide to help you use one of the most common verbs, do , in your writing . Read on below to learn more!

Action Verbs

As the name suggests, action verbs are used to express actions completed by the subject of a sentence. The base verb do is conjugated according to the tense:

1. Present Tense

In the present tense, do takes the form do or does, depending on the subject:

Consider the following examples:

We do our homework every night.

She does her homework every night.

2. Past Tense

In the simple past tense , the base verb do takes the form did with all subjects:

We did our homework last night.

She did her homework last night.

Auxiliary Verbs

Auxiliary , or helping verbs, are used with another base verb to create negative sentences, questions, or add emphasis. Here’s how do should be used as an auxiliary verb:

1. Negative Sentences

Following the same subject–verb pairings introduced above, we combine the auxiliaries do , does , and did with the adverb not to create negative sentences:

We do not do our homework every night.

She did not do her homework last night.

Note that we can combine the auxiliary and the adverb to create the contractions don’t , doesn’t , and didn’t . You simply remove the space between the two words and replace the letter o in not with an apostrophe (’).

Find this useful?

Subscribe to our newsletter and get writing tips from our editors straight to your inbox.

Contractions are more common in conversations and informal writing and typically shouldn’t be used in formal writing (e.g., academic or business).

2. Questions

To create questions, the auxiliary is combined with the infinitive of another verb in this way: auxiliary verb + subject + infinitive verb .

●  Simple present questions:

Do they sell children’s books?

Does he speak English?

Note that the third person verb speaks isn’t spelled with the s when paired with the auxiliary to form a question.

●  Simple past questions:

Did you buy anything at the bookstore?

Did he learn how to speak English?

Note that did indicates the past tense, so the main verbs don’t also take the past tense (i.e., bought and learned ).

3. Emphasis

In positive sentences, we can also combine the auxiliaries do , does , and did with the main verb to emphasize that something is true:

   We do sell children’s books.

He did learn to speak English.

Try saying these sentences aloud and adding emphasis to the auxiliary terms with your tone. It adds a dramatic effect!

Simple Past Tense (Did) – With Explanations Pictures and Exercises

simple past tense

Simple past tense (past simple tense) is a verb tense that describes completed actions or past habits before now. It is also used to talk about a series of events in the past. “Did” is the helping verb of simple past tense. For affirmative (positive) sentences we use past simple form of a verb.

The auxiliary verb in simple past tense is “ did “. However we use “ was-were ” to talk about a state in the past. Examples:

  • I walked in the park.
  • I didn’t walk in the park.
  • Did you walk in the park?
  • I was in the park.
  • I wasn’t in the park.
  • Were you in the park?

For the formation of positive sentences in simple past tense we add “ -ed “, “ -ied ” or just “ -d ” to the verb. We do not use “ did ” for the positive sentences.

  • I asked a question.
  • She studied maths.
  • She cleaned her room.
  • Jack repaired the car last week.
  • A traffic accident happened yesterday.

For the formation of negative sentences in simple past tense we use “ not ” together with “ did “. The short form is “ didn’t ”

  • He did not want tea.
  • We didn’t wait for the bus.
  • I didn’t use your pen.
  • Susan didn’t lie.

For the formation of question sentences (interrogative) in simple past tense we put “ did ” before the subject.

  • Did you enjoy your holiday.
  • Did she write an email.
  • Where did Yuto go?
  • What did Ali want?

Regular verbs are the verbs that gets “ -ed “, “ -ied ” or “ -d ” for the the past simple forms.

Irregular verbs are the verbs which don’t get “ -ed “, “ -ied ” or “ -d ” to form past simple form or past participle form. There are a number of irregular verbs which needs to be memorized. Because the formation has no standard rule. Some verbs have the same form as bare form, past simple form or past participle form. For example “cut, put, let, hit”.

  • (+) I  visit ed  my uncle.
  • (-) I  didn’t visit  my uncle yesterday.
  • (?) Did you visit your uncle yesterday?

How to use did, was, were and does correctly?

Words such as "did", "was", "were", and "does" that frequently appear in learning English. Although it is a word learned in junior high school, many people use "did" in the past, and it seems that there are surprisingly many people who are uncertain about how to use it properly. So, this time, I would like to introduce how to use these four words properly, along with sentences that frequently appear in English conversation.

  • Use Did and Was / Were properly

Use did and does properly

Different use of did and was / were.

Have you made the following mistakes while speaking in online English conversation?

"Did you go to school yesterday?" × Were you go to school yesterday?

The original correct text is below.

â—‹ Did you go to school yesterday? (Did you go to school yesterday?)

So why is "did" correct instead of "were"?

In the first place, the sentence "Did you go to school yesterday?" Is an interrogative form of the sentence "You went to school yesterday."

You went to school yesterday. (You went to school yesterday.)

This went is the past tense of the general verb "go". General verbs are verbs other than the be verb. When making a question sentence of a sentence containing such a past tense general verb, Did is added to the beginning of the sentence, and went remains changed to the original form "go".

You went to school yesterday. (You went to school yesterday.) ↓ Did you go to school yesterday. (You went to school yesterday.)

On the other hand, how about the following sentences?

"Did you in the school at that time?" × Did you in the school at that time?

Were you in the school at that time?

The sentence "Are you at school at that time?" Is a question of the sentence "You were at school at that time" in the first place.

You were in the school at that time.

In this sentence, the verb is not a general verb, but a be verb, which is the past tense of are. In the interrogative sentence of the sentence including the be verb, the be verb moves to the beginning of the sentence as it is.

You were in the school at that time. (At that time, you were at school.) ↓ Were you in the school at that time. (At that time, you were at school.)

Of course, the past tense of the be verb is not only were, but also was. For example,

He was in the school at that time. (He was in the school at that time.)

In the question sentence of the sentence, the be verb was moved to the beginning of the sentence,

He was in the school at that time. (He was in the school at that time?) ↓ Was he in the school at that time?

It will be.

<Summary> 1. In past interrogative sentences of general verbs, Did is used at the beginning of the sentence. In past interrogative sentences of the be verb, Were or Was is used at the beginning of the sentence.

Did, Was / Were example sentences

Based on the previous explanation, let's look at some of the example sentences that can be used in online English conversation.

Patterns that use Did

You liked the ice cream. (You liked the ice cream.) ↓ Did you like the ice cream? (Did you like the ice cream?)
You bought new shoes. (You bought new shoes.) ↓ Did you buy new shoes? (Did you buy new shoes?)
You wrote a letter to your mom. ↓ Did you write a letter to your mom? (Did you write a letter to your mom?)

Patterns that use Were

You were sick last week. (You were sick last week.) ↓ Were you sick last week? (Did you get sick last week?)
You were sad when you saw it. (You were sad when you saw it.) ↓ Were you sad when you saw it?
They were there last summer. (They were there last summer.) ↓ Were they there last summer? (Did they stay there last summer?)

Pattern using Was

He was at home yesterday. (He was at home yesterday.) ↓ Was he at home yesterday? (Did he stay at home yesterday?)
She was with Tom last Friday. (She was with Tom last Friday.) ↓ Was she with Tom last Friday? (She was with Tom this Friday?)
I was wrong. (I was wrong.) ↓ Was I wrong? (I was wrong?)

Next, let's look at the difference between did and does. When speaking in English, I often hear that the place where does should be used is did, and vice versa.

First of all, there are two main situations where you often see did and does.

The first is when the general verb "do" changes, "do" and "do", and the other is when it is used as an "auxiliary verb" in the head of an interrogative sentence. Let's explain these two patterns separately.

Variations of the general verb "do" "did" "does"

First of all, "did", but suppose you have the following sentence.

I do homework. (I do my homework)
You do the washing.
They do the dishes.

In the example sentence above, "do" acts as the verb "do". "Did" appears when the general verb "to" is transformed into the past tense of "to".

I did homework. (I did my homework.)
You did the washing.
They did the dishes.

On the other hand, "does" is the present tense, and when the subject is a pronoun such as "he", "she", or "it" or a proper noun, the third person of do (third person, singular, present tense). "Does" is used.

She does homework.
He does the washing.
Tom does the dishes.

<Summary> 1. In the past tense of the general verb "do", "did" is used. If the subject is the third person singular and present tense, "do" changes to "does"

"Did" and "does" used at the beginning of an interrogative sentence

"Did" and "does" also appear at the beginning of an interrogative sentence. At this time, "did" and "does" are not verbs, but auxiliary verbs, and work to indicate that they are interrogative sentences.

First of all, "did" is used for "past" interrogative sentences as shown below.

Did you go to school yesterday? (Did you go to school yesterday?)
Did he talk to you last Friday? (Did he talk to you last Tuesday?)
Did she like your present?

The fact that "Did" is in your head tells you that it is a past question.

On the other hand, "does" is used when the subject is the current interrogative and the subject is the third person singular such as "she", "he", "it".

Does he usually go to school by bus?
Does she enjoy her job?
Does Emily often cook?

As mentioned above, in the current interrogative form, "Does" is used if the subject is the third person singular. This doesn't come out at first, and you might just say "Do she" or "Do he". Let's memorize the part drawn in red as a set by saying "Does he" and "Does she" many times.

<Summary> 1. "Did" is used at the beginning of past tense interrogative sentences . "Does" is a present tense interrogative, used when the subject is the third person singular

"Did," "was," "were," "does," etc. are words that are often used in English conversation. I think there are many people who say the wrong word in the sentence. By speaking the correct example sentence introduced this time aloud many times, you will feel a sense of discomfort when "did" becomes "was". Once you understand the difference, please try to speak a lot.

Good job! But where is the did and didn’t? it’s not even in the quiz. Tnxs

' src=

thanks but i dont understand the use of these words

' src=

i want to know about use of shall and will,, i know that shall use with i,& we but whenever our teachers use will with i and we why ?

“Shall” has a few different uses.

1) It can mean the same thing as “I will” — “I will tell you tomorrow”/”I shall tell you tomorrow”.

2) It can be used to talk about something that has to be done, or to tell people to do something. “Students shall write their names at the top of the page.”

3) It can be used in questions — to talk about something that could happen, or make a suggestion. “Shall I come back later?” could mean that you are asking someone if you should come back later or not, or that you are suggesting you could come back later if they want.

“Shall” is very common in the UK, but not at all in North America. In North America we would use “will”/”must”/”will” + “maybe”/”could” instead.

Sorry mam your voice is low, but your teaching is good.

Thank you so much.

Oh sorry its in the discussion but not in the quiz :-)

i am now well awairness to these words. Basic problem is to short vacbluary. can you help me to imporve my vablury and also learing your lession.

All your classes are fantastic!

are you in 8th standard

Engvid is a great ESL site .in fact you have special technique in teaching and I’d like to ask you to teach me how to think of things with their English name not with my original language and then translate it to English thank a lot.

Thinking of things in English and not in your original language is not something I can teach you… it is something that must happen in your brain. Once you begin to “switch your brain” over to English, then you can begin to think of words in English. I can only suggest going to an English speaking country, or talking to yourself in English.

' src=

You used word absolutely correct and i am really impressed with this.

Thanks for such kind of great artical putting here.

hello ronnie, I love your lectures. I watched your lectures have, has, had and this one.I got a doubt, ‘I do have’ and ‘I have’ is these both same or different or wrong.

' src=

i don’t want love again, because my heart is broken

' src=

Ronnie is completely right when she says that must happen in your brain. It’s easy, and everything you have to do is to collect very large fund of words, adjectives, verbs, nouns, adverbs, preposition etc., in order to use adequate word to describe something that is instantly in your mind. I did it :))))))

Eurekaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks.. You are great.

' src=

thank a lot

i have a doubt why we cannot use does has or doesn’t has instead of does have or doesn’t have?for she or he we have to use “has” right but above case why we dont?

We must say “She/He doesn’t have” because the auxiliary verb “do” is the only verb you need to change to suit the subject.

Hi Ms. Ronie, how about “it” what I am gonna use is it “do” or “does” Thanks, have a great day

' src=

What do you think you should use with it? I’ll tell you the answer once you tell me what you think.

“it does” or “it doesn’t” is that correct? or there’s anything else? thanks

Yes! You are correct!

You r a good teacher, thank you

' src=

Thank you too much, I think this website is the best one in the world about learning English, with best regards

thank you sear .. it’s very good

thank you ma’am .. it’s very good

Hi!How are you?you are great!Thank you!

Will you please tackle about Other Pronoun forms? 1. Between you and (I,me),” said Tonya, “we will probably be assigned to the McMeekin account.” The answer is “me”. Why? What is the rule about this?

2. Have you asked Joseph and (she, her) if they plan to attend the seminar?

3. It was not (I, me) who ordered this manual.

4.Please explain my absence to Arthur and (she, her).

5. I do not know (who, whom)our manager selected to replace Pierre.

6. Mr. Parmar is the only broker (who, whom) we called for an appraisal.

Please explain these in a much easier to understand lesson.

Thanks, Joshua

Ah… you are confused because the usage of “whom” and “I” are old school grammar book rules! Whereas “who” and “me” we use nowadays! So, in very OLD FORMAL English, the correct answers are 1.I, 3)I, 5)whom, 6)whom but in spoken English (which ignores a lot of the rules) we would use me, me, who, and who! Hope that helps!

Thanks a lot for these video

Thank you for this lesson. Q. Why don’t talk about “it” ?!

' src=

it + does >> like: he & she

It doesn’t work.

Don’t and doesn’t for speaking only, for writing I should write “do not” and “does not” .. that right ??

What about ( it ) ?

hi ronnie when i spoke to my friends, sometime i get confused because not sure about are you going there or do you go there? please help me with this confusion.

“Are you going there?” is to ask if you plan to go somewhere in the future. Eg: “Are you going to the gym tomorrow?” “Do you go there?” is to ask if the person frequents a place. Eg: “Do you go to Starbucks?” “Do you go to the gym?” — They are asking if you go to these places a lot!

we use HE/SHE/IT whith does and doesn’t or not

please tell the use of would that in which kind of situation we use that….i,m looking forward to hear you in near future is it correct?

in tenses please..and or, like what teacher ronnie did in her teachings with negative and a positive..thanks a lot..God bless..

hello haw are you i love you i am learn english for you :D

egypt ismail nassar

Hi, i would really appreciate if you could help me figure the right word to use here. Should i use ‘don’t or ‘doesn’t in this sentence :

“Chris wants to buy a new book but don’t/doesn’t know which to get”

I think the right verb to use is “doesn’t” because the mention of name is the same as using it for he/she (singular 3rd party)

Please correct me if i am wrong. Thanks Ronnie

You are correct!!!!

tnx.. With your lesson, now i can use those verbs in a right manner.. Thank you very much

hello mam, I like your teaching very much. Now i’m very happy & taking lot of interest in learning how to speak english.Thanx a lot. Can you give me more questios for quiz?

thanxs it is a great website.. i want to learn how does verb changes in present ,past & future using do, dont, does, doesnt, did & didnt

so… fantastic!!! but i have a question:)) is “your mama don’t know” a right english? or “your mama doesn’t know”

“Your mama doesn’t know” is correct!

hi Ronnie, Its great to have a teacher like you. Need to know that if we are beginners then from where to start learning English, I mean about a sequence, that what should be the first topic then the second and so on, like a learning chart. Hope if you can make this easier for all of us.

Thanks & Regards BJ

I think you should learn basic vocabulary and verbs first. Then simple present tense, past and future tense.

Which Is Correct ? I Didnt spend or i didnt spent ? thanks

I didn’t spend is correct. Didn’t is past so you don’t need to change “spend” to past tense!

now i learn something new

thank you very much

' src=

OoOoOh,, Very great and Basic lecture..

Thank you verrrrrrrrrrrrry much..

' src=

i like a lot and understand easly thanks

thanks you save my life… :D

For “does” and “doesn’t” you forgot the pronoun “it.”

Example: ‘It ((the toaster)) doesn’t ususally work. It does sometimes work after I whack it a bit.’ I suggest a dding the nonpersonal pronoun “it” to this lecture — as well as the use of non-pronoun subjects with “do,” “does,” etc.

i like your lesson lovely lesson

thank your very much for this free lesson. your a very good teacher.

what is correct. 1.the house doesn’t/dont have a roof? 2. lot of people don’t/doesn’t have a food on their plate. 3.their wives doesn’t/dont have a money

You have to think if the noun is singular or plural. If it is singular use does/doesn’t. Plural, use do/don’t. You think about this and email me what YOU think the answers are! Good luck!

I took above three questions as my exercise and find the answers below.

1. the house doesn’t have a roof? 2. lot of people don’t have a food on their plate. 3.their wives dont have a money

Please check and correct me if anything wrong.

You need to put a capital letter on every sentence. A food and a money are both wrong. It should be money/food.

Dear Ronnie, Thanks for your good effort. Your exercise is very interesting. I wish you post many exercise so that it will improve english grammer to every one using your net. Thank you and good work. KEEP IT UP.

Dear Ronnie, Thank you very much for your good method of teaching. It is well explained and easy to understand. I have a request if you don’t mind please. I want to know the proper usage of “articles”. Your kind consideration is much appreciated.

' src=

Hi Ronny, i have two questions . first one, What’s diffrence between these sentences. he likes her & he does like her. second question, i answerd these quiz but there one question missunderstand mean this senetnce”She does not like him bescause he is verey meaning her” it mean he not love him because he care her or she hate him because he nosy ..forget to tell you that’s first time to share here but i intearsting & enjoy by your method .so, i singup here & put in my favourit & will follow your video & new news hope to continue

“He likes her” is how we normally say that one person likes another. “He DOES like her”, is ONLY to emphasize that he indeed does like her! ”She does not like him because he is very meaning her”…. This should say ….””She does not like him because he is very mean to her”. It means that he is a bad person and not nice to her, so she does not like him! Thanks for watching and good luck!

yeah,Roonie ..i understand you & thank you alot for your helping. well, i study course english at egypt with forgin Instructores. they follow us & to continue connecation at facebook you will see command mistake when we discusse with them from level one to level 6 .These discusses there help you when you prepare Vido. what are problems with begginer, intermiddiate &advance levels .just write spread your english in google search, you will find first link spread your engilsh at face book after that, plz open discuess tap you will be find student chat there with thier Instructors.really, we have some people teach me from U.S but they are not as like you.Anyway, one day if you will vist egypt ofcourse i’ll hoste you there by free.that’s nice to meet you

Was/were is the past form of “to be” verb. I was here. We were at the park. Did is the past form of do. We use for actions.,,,, I did my homework. I did the laundry. Have/has is present, had is past tense. We use to show possession – I have 5 dogs. She has a headache. I hope that helps!

“This is not suitable for our current requirement”. is this sentence correct? if yes which tense

' src=

“This is not suitable for our current requirement” is correct. It is present tense because the verb is “is”.

as per my understanding when we use present continues we have to use am/is/are+v1+ing. but in this sentense i have a confusion “It is not suitable ” i cant use ing here. is this sentence correct ?

“It is not suitable” is correct. You cannot use suitable with ing.

Dear Ronnie, Thank you very much for your good method of teaching. teacher i want to know that what is difference between “believe and belief”?? thanks.. waiting for your reply…

Muhammad Kashif.

' src=

To improve your vocabulary, try to learn one or 2 new words a day and use them in a sentence!

On the explanation of the Do and Does. I did not see the it form which also belongs to the 3rd person singular group (He and She), but the rest was very useful. Thank you.

i visited your website,i was amazed on your topic..but i’m still confused.i will just ask which is correct grammar.I didn’t see or I didn’t saw?

I didn’t see. Didn’t is past tense so you don’t need to change the second verb.

Hello Ronnie! I’m liking so much of your lessons! In this moment I’m studying alone, so this site is very useful. Thank you!

' src=

Hi, thanks Ronnie for this great lesson.it’s very helpful

' src=

Maam Ronnie your awesome, ms Ronnie my question is this, why the baby did not know how to write and how to read, why she could speak very well… I think the best to do is, if you want to know how to speak english fluently regardless of education i would suggests you can always hear the conversation in english language. reading and writing did not really2x essential I think hearing is best method if you to know how to speak English fluently. What do you think ms Ronnie? correct me if I’m wrong… thank and god bless…..

I think it depends on how you learn – some people can just learn by listening, others need to see the words, others need a more physical learning environment. Everyone is different. When I learned Japanese I had to write down the words to remember how to say them….but I didn’t learn the grammar!

how to use would?

' src=

I want to know, why does the word she is used with have ? :S She is the third person and have is used in only negative sentences. :/ If you can help me out of this thing. I’ll be quite pleasured. :D

In the example “Does she have”, we have to change only the aux. verb do to reflect the noun…..We don’t have to change any other verb….We don’t say “Does she has”….. I don’t know WHY – I have no idea why we have ALL they grammar rules that we do – they don’t make sense to me!!

tank you so much Ms Ronnie

Both are correct!

good…thanks teacher

please give me many example

I,we you,they-do(present tense),did(past tense). he,she it-does(present tense),did(past). Is it correct?? “he has done his homework” is this sentence correct? 1.”does she have an extra pen?”(or) “does she has an extra pen” 2.”yes she has” (or) “yes she is having” which is the correct one from above senteces correct? plzzz rply me.

I,we you,they-do(present tense),did(past tense). he,she it-does(present tense),did(past). Is it correct?? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! “He has done his homework” is this sentence correct? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1.”does she have an extra pen?” YES!!!!!(or) “does she has an extra pen” NO – you don’t need to change have because “does” is changed. 2.”yes she has” YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (or) “yes she is having” NO – you cannot use “hav+ing”!

if we are saying anybody then what we can use DO or Does?? 1.”do anybody want to take responsibility” or 2.”does anybody want to take responsibility” or i think often we use “IS” like”is anybody interested in dancing” plzzz i’ll be thankfull to u if u clear my confusion with some examples. Hope u understand my question.

Does anybody is correct = “anybody” is singular! So…has anybody, does anybody, was anybody. “Is anybody” is correct!

With Noun do we use do or does for e.g. Anita do not know English or Anita does not know English. which one is correct

thanks alot Ms ..

I did that Quiz what you gave us !

thanks alot .. keept up !

Mrs. Ronnie , thank you so much :D

i want to ask.. based from your video i found that u used all the personal pronouns as the example.but where is “it”? i could not find it in your video. does it have different usage from the above stated? thank you

It = does/doesn’t. Did/didn’t!

i also would like to ask about is it correct if the questions= a) where does she go? or we can say where does she goes? however when i asked my friends most of them answered the answer is a. why?

You only have to change the auxiliary verb “do” to does, You do not have to change BOTH verbs (do and go)!

Ronnie,Thanks!! But I have a question, very very silly question for you:What differences between verb “to be”,which can be “do,does” and “am,is,are”???I know it sounds silly, but it my problem sometime…))

' src=

Your question is not silly! It is a very good question as many people are confused with to be and do! First of all do/does IS NOT part of “to be”! “To be” is only am, is, or are! Basically, if you have an adjective in the sentence, you are going to use “to be” Ex… I am tired. Tired is an adjective so you cannot say I do tired! I am hungry. She is thirsty. They are smart. “Do” is an action verb, and we use it with a noun- “I do my homework”. Homework is a noun. You cannot say I am homework!!! He does aerobics. She does the dishes, They do math.

Thanks,Ronnie! You open a great secret for me)))

Awesome!!! thanks alot!

Wonder which is a better line- “Do you want to grab dinner” or “Did you want to grab dinner”. What is the difference between the two sentences and what circumstances might be appropriate to use one or the other. Thoughts?

Did you is past tense, but we use this sometimes in informal conversation! Do you is present tense and “proper grammar” if you are asking the person at the moment!

U’re doing a great work to not-english- spoke people (like me). Ur lesson is very good and basic but I have some trouble in listening can’t, didn’t and some negative words ’cause when foreigners say, they always swallow it and make me misunderstand. Please, help me. I hope that there aren’t too much grammar mistake in my message. Thank u for ur all ur help.

thank you very much!! this can help me to improve my remarks this Final Exam!! =))

HI RONNIE YOU DID GOOD JOBU I LIKE IT

Hi can you tell me what is correct: “i didnt knew” or “i didnt know”. Thnx xxx

I didn’t know. When we use “did”, we don’t need to change the other words to past tense – only one!!

Where is the subject “it” in this video? otherwise its fine. Why have you dropped down the subject ‘It’?

hi thanks for teaching it is very useful.can you tell us what is adverb?

An adverb describes how the verb is done. Ex. He ran slowly. Slowly=adverb, telling us how he ran.

really styl well

Can you please help me with this: What is the verb in “What does her mother do on Tuesday?” And please explain or elaborate. Thank you.

Does and do are verbs

hi thanks for teaching.can you tell use about comparative and superlative, please?

idonét now when we use do and did

Do= present tense Did= past tense

' src=

grateful ::))

' src=

thank you very much its good for me i am 13 years old

what about CAN???? Will you always have a DO after a CAN???? As in “No can do!!!” Just joking. But you get what a mean! Awesome stuff.

Why do we use for third person the verb likes but when we use did we don’t. ie. He likes vs he didn’t like instead of he didn’t likes.

When we use the auxiliary verb “did”, we don’t need to change the other verb!

thank you Ronni i understand to your lisson.

' src=

Hi Ronnie, I have come accross this site trying to find help for my son (grade 3) with his English. He often makes mistakes with the use of “done” and I don’t know how to explain to him the correct usage, I can only tell him when it sounds wrong. Can you simplify when it is correct to use the word done as in, I did, I have done? The other day I done, I did?

' src=

Done we use with present/past perfect, or as an adjective “I am done”. You cannot use done in simple past.

Thank you for all Ronni. i like your lessons

I you find any mistakes on my grammar, just correct it and I’m glad to know it! thanks!

If I use “didn’t”, Do I need to change the verb that follows? For example, I didn’t make that or I didn’t MADE that? :)

If I use “didn’t”, Do I need to change the verb that follows? NO ! I didn’t make that = correct!!!

In the example “Does she have”, we have to change only the aux. verb do to reflect the noun…..We don’t have to change any other verb….We don’t say “Does she has”….. I don’t know WHY – I have no idea why we have ALL they grammar rules that we do – they don’t make sense to me!!

thanks for your lessons, I would like to ask you 2 questions. First I’m confused how to use the verb (Had) Ex, in one sentence you can se had had. I had had a big car, another question is the verb, (being) when can i use being, Ex, if i say , being a bad person is not good, its right, thanks for your help

Had had is past perfect form. (had + p.p) Ex. I had had a dog but it died.I had eaten the apple. Being we use in continuous forms of grammar. Ex. She is being funny, = She to be funny.

Hello Ronnie! I have one question on Present Simple. What form in do we use verb start in the sentence: “At 2 o’clock lessons____again.” With ‘s’ or witout ending? I’m looking forward for your reply. Thanks!

' src=

Because the word “lesson” is plural, you don’t need to use “s”. If the word lesson was singular, you need the “S”.

Hi! Ms Ronnie I’d like to know if “It” is a “Pronoun” too, because i think you forgot it to put there. Thanks!

' src=

Yes, it is a pronoun. You are right – I did forget it! With it we use does!!!

i like your teaching ms ronnie but i would like to learn more about the pronounsiations of diffiicult words

Thanks for your useful teaching video. I like the way you teach and your great voice.Keep on the good work. and kindly keep up u r teach on engvid page and thanks a lot miss ronnie

you with did or no??

Yes! You + did!

First i wanna say thank you, its really a very good videos and its really helpful!!

Second, i have two questions: 1. In this video you didn’t notice to “it” and “we”.. it would make me feel better if you will explain how do we reffer to them. 2 And the other questions is – can i write a sentence like that ” i’m not going” or “she’s not leaving” ? becouse i saw another video that didn’t mention that way – and its got me confused.. you were talking about onlu “he isn’t” and not “he’s not”

the question is they both are ok?

It + does We + do. You can use both he isn’t and he’s not ! I’m not going” and “She’s not leaving” = both correct!

HELP! Which one is correct? 1. What “do” she and her family do on the weekend? 2. What “does” she and her family do on the weekend?

Are + adjectives. Are you hungry? Do + verb. Do you like pizza?

but how about in a profession, why in “profession” have to uses are, e.g . are you a nurse ?

Profession we use to be. I am a nurse. ( I to be a nurse) You cannot say I nurse , as nurse in this case is a verb.

nice presentation, i have one doubt. In presentense ” it + does & doesn’t ” ok . so past tense how it would be come inti picture ? i am eager to wait for ypur reply.

Hello Ronnie, I wanted to know that when do we use “does not” and when do we use “doesn’t” and also reason behind that and also about other such words for example:”have not, haven’t”,”did not, didn’t” and etc etc. I also wanted to know meanings of words such as “preety” much impossible..I’l “figure it out” and other such words used in english conversation. I hope that you’ll do lessons for me on these topics.. And I also hope that you’ll reply me as soon as possible..

' src=

Doesn’t = does ….they are the same. As well, haven’t ”have not, haven’t”,”did not, didn’t”. The only difference is that we use the shortened more and save the longer ones (have not) to make our point stronger. Preety is not a word. Pretty??? Pretty means beautiful and very.

hi,miss i don’t understand the use of do,does and doesn’t. what will come with ‘it’do or does.plz explain.thanx

I hope u understood my question as I’m not able to explain it properly..

I am not too sure what you mean but…. babies suck on a bottle. If i drink from a bottle I put my lips on it – we don’t have a special word for this! To tell someone, I would just say my lips touched the bottle.

Very friendly explanation rather than Inglo-link.:)

May I know the difference between INTO & ONTO?

Into = inside Onto = on top

Can u explain the difference in use between do and did? For example “I don’t have friends” vs “I didn’t have friends”. Tx

Do = present tense Did = past tense. Watch the video again!

Yes you understood.. Thanks..

Hi Ronnie, I must tell you that I fine tuned my English fundamentals through your videos. It would be great if you can share a video on Will/Would/can/Could with have and haven’ts. Please

Search the site for “Will/Would/can/Could” there are lessons there for you!

“What does he do in the afternoon?” It is right?..Why do I have to use “do” in this question, I am really confuse. Can you explain this to me? Thanks!

If you just say what does he in the afternoon – it makes no sense! What does he eat/drink/say in the afternoon – you need a verb in the sentence!

Hi,can i use didn’t saw in a sentence or didn’t see is the correct one?

Didn’t see. Didn’t is past tense so you don’t need 2 past tense verbs!!!

thank you so much Ronnie thank you kindly you are good teacher your studint in kurdistan

Dear Ronnie,

Per you, Answer for the below quiz is “doesn’t”.. I wonder that why can’t we use “does” too?

She ________ like him, because he is very mean to her. do does doesn’t

' src=

Why would you like someone if they are very mean to you??

I just want to ask if this sentence is grammatically wrong.>>>> (I didn’t want to ask.)<<<< Is it grammatically correct? Why or why isn't it right? Thanks and more power to your site^^

Search the site for “tenses”.

thanks alot i have a question.whn do e use WOULD? thanks in advance

Search the site for “Would”.

Hello! Teacher Ronnie. I’m from Brazil. I would like know about the between differences “like and as” in other words, when can I to use like and as, ie, which situations? thank you so much and congratulations for the lessons!!

' src=

LIKE The structure of the sentence is usually: VERB + LIKE + NOUN / PRONOUN. He speaks like a native speaker. She looks like a supermodel. AS The structure of the sentence is usually: AS + SUBJECT + VERB. Nobody sings as she does. They went to the party as they were. It is very common in American English to use LIKE instead of AS. However, it is generally considered informal to use it in this way.

We play football like champions do.

hi mam ronie i want to ask about somehow, anyhow, weither, either, how to use them in a conversation? hope you can help me thanks.

Look the words up in a dictionary…there will be example sentences for you there!

Hello,madam ronnie.

I have one question here. I saw the one shampoo product, the information wrote is “Did you know?Damaged hair is more prone to falling.” why is did but not do?i’m very confused about it.Hope you can help, thank you:)

You are correct……it should be “Do you know”!

Hi Teacher Ronnie, it’s me again! I have one more a question. Ok! The word “HOW” can I to use only at the beginning of sentences?

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Yes, most times we use it at the beginning. How are you? How is your mom? How is the steak? How do I get there? It is the same as the other wh questions = who what when where why + how!

I am fairly impressed with this site, and im glad i found it. I am currently living in Peru and am trying to teach kids some basic English, and one student asked me to talk about did and that, so this is great. Also, and just curious why was “it” excluded, like it did or it didn’t?

I am allergic to “it”! Ahahah just kidding… I forgot “it”!

thank you very much teacher Ronnie Do you is BRILLIANT!!

I like the way you are teaching and it is really help me to improve. Could you please provide me the difference between present/past & future with examples. I would really appreciate if you can reply me. thanks

Thank you …

/Does/always must be use He and She?

Yes, in the present tense.

Hi teacher! I just learn English grammar in Cambodia, but I don’t understand how to use HAVE and GET. I hearing you.God bless.

I want to clarify , if i want to say.. that place doesn’t have a soul or crowd attraction. Is that correct? I am confused for the usage of Doesn’t have.

And usage of did ..like.. he didn’t do this correctly. eg. with did we use.. present tense…

Thank you …

' src=

Hi Ronnie you are a good teacher however i am confused with this sentence.( what does he do in the afternoon ) please explain the use of do does and did with it and which form of verb should be there ….also want to check with you do we use does with singular and do with plurals.

what will we use with (IT)

if i didn’t know that ben doesn’t /don’t like vanilla cakes ???? answer

thank you so much ronnie.. :):)

Which one of the following sentences is correct? 1) Do John and Sally want to go? 2) Does John and sally want to go?

What do you think is correct?

I think ‘Do’ because John and sally are more than one person. Am I right ma’am?

I think correct is #1

' src=

I miss word “IT” in the video. There is used “does”.

Where should we use done in a sentences.

hi teacher .. I want ask for you what is difference between (wh + be and wh + do) When we use( verb to be .verb to do ) with the question . thanks for you

' src=

Be + adjective/noun. Where is he? Are you hungry? Do + verb. What does he like? Who does she like?

In understanding test, one of the question I choose ‘does’ and the answer is wrong and the right answer is stated below:

She doesn’t like him, because he is very mean to her.

I confused because it seem have a contradiction. Someone does not like somebody because it very mean? Perhaps you can explain more.

Mean = not nice. If someone is mean to you, they are not nice to you so you don’t like that person!

I’d like to ask about “Do & Does”. How to use “Do & Does” with subject OUR? Thanks

With (our) you must use a noun, so it will depend if the noun is singular or plural! Singular noun use does. Our brother does his homework. Plural noun use do. Our parents do the taxes.

Thanks for reply

If asking a question? For example, How does/do our service? Use DO or Does?

i’m confused with this form “let god do the rest” i’m often hear this one. my question is why “God” use “do” why not use “does”? looking forward for your answer :)

' src=

Dear professor: I want to know when we must use the auxiliary do-does in the interrogative form, with the verbs to have and toe.

We use do/does with a regular verb. Do you like pizza? Does he have a job?

With a modal verb or to be verb, we do not use do/does! Are you sick? Is he funny? Should we go now?

I want to know what can we use with the subjective IT, DO/ Does, Because some teachers teach” we use does with 3rd person singular means he, she, it and any single noun.. Please strive to reform me..

This question will help lots of people. Is it a rule not to use plural after DO/DOES/DID? Example: He doesn’t LIKE. They don’t LIKE. He knows -> He doesn’t KNOW.

Thank you very much. Its really helpful.

i have some sentences which is always make me confused. here they are

1. let GOD DO the rest 2.i’m looking in the mirror all the time. wondering what SHE DON’Tsee me

look at the capslock pieces of the sentences. they both use “do” for the subjects “god” and “she”.

i know those sentences right because i found them from english-native but i don’t know what makes them right. i wish you read this comment Ronnie and get to answer my question. lots of thanks our beloved teacher :)

hello teacher! are(do, does, did)auxilary verbs? if not, what are they?

I was told it’s not correct to say “i think he’s not a good man” is it true? and i was suggested to say “i don’t think he’s a good man”! any one can tell me? thank in advance!!!!

just trying to help. i think both of them are right. the different is the meaning of each sentences

Amazing lesson but i have one doubt about that yet .. What can i use about personal names? Examples: Carlos will does your homework or Carlos will do your homework? Melinda doesnt like him or Melinda dont like him?

Thanks in advance..

Carlos and Melinda = he and she! So, you would use Carlos will do (you always use a base verb after will), and Melinda doesn’t like!

its so easy

my parents does not allow party is correct or my parents dont allow party which is correct mam plz tell

My parents are plural so you have to use do not! My parents do not allow SUBJECT to have a party. OR My parents do not allow subject to party.

Good morning to all of you. I have some confusions with DO NOT and NOT TO. I do not know when I have to use DO NOT and when I have to use NOT TO

Do not + verb. Do not go. Do not see. These are commands. I was told not to go…she said not to eat. We use these in reported speech.

THANK YOU ON HELP ME

do not look. and do not see

are they both correct?

Hi. I just want to ask if this sentence is correct, “Upon triggering the switch, magnetic contactor did not activate.”

“ the magnetic contactor” sounds better, I think.

if the subject is ‘You’ then what will come for negative past tense…..

do you say: she doesn´t love Peter or She doesn´t loves Peter

She doesn’t love Peter. (don’t change the verb)

why is “I told her not to drive” insted of “I told her don´t drive”

Told makes it reported speech. So….don’t+ base verb, changes to NOT TO + base verb!

Ronnie you are the best teacher ever. I’m from Guatemala from the Castillo family the family of the Cerveceria de Guatemala look it in google hahaha sorry thanks !!!!

I like your way of teaching

my friend sad “He do that sometimes”

is this correct ??

No! He DOES that sometimes is correct! Now, you can correct your friend!

Thank you so much

I can’t understand when DO uses in positive sentenses like “He does need help” instead “He needs help”. What is the difference?

“He needs help” is a regular sentence. “He does need help” we use to emphasize (make stronger/clearer) the fact. We can use it if the listener did not understand the answer. Ex…. A)Does he need help? B)Yes, he needs help. A)What? I didn’t hear you. B)I said, He DOES need help!

HI, Ma’am Ronnie, May I ask if it’s sentence right,.. Ms. Reyes has arrived with bag.

may we have a in past lessons

' src=

Hi Ronnie! Here’s one very interesting question I guess! But I really need you to answer me, please!!!!! I noticed that Americans use “don’t” with it and he very often!!! in spoken English, even in the songs! For example: … and even forever don’t seem like long enough … or he don’t know what to do!!! Thus the question is: how often do you use it in your life and maybe you have some kinda rules in your spoken language when you can use it or not? Or maybe it just happens automatically when somebody speak and doesn’t depend on any “spoken rules”. Thank you and I’m very looking forward to hearing from you. Best regards!

' src=

I passed the exam.

' src=

Thank you Ronnie.

' src=

' src=

Thank you for the lessons. I have doubt She does have a car. she has a car . which one is correct ?

' src=

Thank you Mam Ronnie.

' src=

Mr. Rajkumar, “don’t” and “doesn’t are both negative in the sentence. The difference is the first sentence is first person singular, and second is third person singular.

Harsha, both sentence are correct. “Has” is the third person singular of the present tense “have”. In the first sentence “does have” means you want to emphasize something.

Thank you so much for this opportunity.

' src=

Hi Ronnie, Could you please explain the Question Form for “Do” Verb? it will be very helpful :)

Do – Does – Did – Done

DO – DOES – DID – DONE

The word  DO  appears a lot in English.

This is because it can be a verb, as in the verb  TO DO  which can be conjugated as Do and Does in the present tense, Did in the past tense and Done as a past participle.

DO can also be an  AUXILIARY  verb in the form of Do / Does to make questions in the present tense and Did to make questions in the past tense.

Let’s look at each one in more detail. We will start with the verb TO DO.

As we have seen, the verb  TO DO  has four forms: Do / Does / Did and Done Lets look at its form in the simple present tense.

TO DO – Present Tense

With the verb TO DO in the Present Tense… We say: I do / you do / we do / they do But we say: he does / she does / it does

Let’s look at some example sentences:

  • I  do  my laundry on Saturdays.

(Do my laundry means I wash my clothes, well, I put in the washing machine)

  • They  do  their chores when they arrive home.

(Chores is the housework you need to do like washing the dishes, doing the vacuuming, etc.)

  • He  does  nothing all day. (That’s right… he is quite lazy, he does absolutely nothing.)
  • She  does charity work when she has time. (People that do charity work are superheroes)

TO DO – Past Tense

The simple past tense of DO is  DID  for all subjects: I did / you did / we did / they did / he did / she did / it did Notice how there is only one form of the verb in the past tense…. DID .

  • He  did  a magic trick. (Yes, and everyone was amazed… wooow!)
  • The baby  did  a fart. (Yes, and the smell made everyone cry. How can such a cute thing produce something so rotten.)
  • I  did  my homework in record time. (Yes, it only took me 5 hours instead of 10)
  • She did ballet after school last year. (This year she is doing something different)

TO DO – Past Participle

The past participle of DO is  DONE . Remember that past participles are accompanied by a conjugation of the verb  TO HAVE  or  TO BE  (which means it is in the correct tense according to the subject)

In general Have + past participle is used with a perfect tense and BE + past participle is with the passive voice . Let’s look at some examples:

  • I have  done  my homework.
  • He has  done  a good job.

These two sentences are in the present perfect tense because they have have or has before the past participle done .

  • The video will show you how it is  done .
  • The report was  done  on time.

Here we used a conjugation of the verb To Be before the past participle done .

TO DO – To replace a verb

We sometimes use the verb  DO  to  replace a verb when the meaning is clear  or obvious. This replacement is more common in informal spoken English:

  • Have you  done  the dishes yet?

(Here done means washed )

  • I’ll  do  the kitchen if you  do  the lawns

(The first do means clean – The second do means mow )

Sometimes Do , Does , and Did are used as auxiliaries to make questions in English.

Let’s start with DO and DOES:

DO / DOES – For Questions

To make a question in the simple present tense in English we normally put the auxiliary Do or Does at the beginning of the question before the subject. After the subject is the verb in its base form which means the infinitive without TO at the beginning. Look at this affirmative sentence:

  • You speak English.

How can we make this a question? We add DO at the beginning so it becomes:

  • Do  you speak English?

You will see that we add  DO  at the beginning when the subject is  I ,  you ,  we  or  they .

But look at this affirmative sentence:

  • He speaks Arabic.

To make this a question we say:

  • Does  he speak Arabic?

You can see that we add  DOES  at the beginning when the subject is  he ,  she or  it .

Notice how the letter  S  at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in the question. That is because the verb is in the base form of the infinitive.

NOTE: We  DON’T  use  Do  or  Does  in questions that have the verb  To Be  or  Modal Verbs  (can, must, might, should etc.)

DID – For Questions

Let’s look at the auxiliary DID.

To make a question in the Simple Past Tense in English we normally put the auxiliary DID at the beginning of the question before the subject. And just like in the present tense, After the subject is the verb in its base form which means the infinitive with TO at the beginning. Look at this affirmative sentence:

  • You lived in Spain.

How can we make this a question? We add DID at the beginning so it becomes:

  • Did  you live in Spain?

We use the verb form Live and NOT lived because the auxiliary DID show that the question is in the past tense.

Did is also used with He, She and It. So with this affirmative sentence:

  • She lived in Japan.

To make it a question in the past tense we say:

  • Did she live in Japan?

Again we use DID for questions in the past EXCEPT with To Be  and  Modal Verbs  such as  Can . Compare these questions:

  • Do you speak English?
  • Did you speak English?

The only difference between a question in the present tense and the past tense is the first part… DO or DID. And look at these two questions

  • Does he speak Italian?
  • Did he speak Italian?

The only difference between a question in the present tense and the past tense when it refers to third person (he, she, or it) is the first part… DOES or DID.

Auxiliary and Verb together

Look at this question:

  • Do you do exercises every day?

Why are there two DOs in this question? The first DO is necessary because we are making a question in the simple present tense. The second DO is from the verb TO DO. You DO exercises.

What happens if instead of YOU we are asking about another person?

  • Does she do exercises every day?

We use DOES because it is necessary for simple present tense questions for third person, in this case for SHE. Does she….? Again DO appears because you DO exercises. It appears as DO and not DOES because the verb needs to be in the base form of the infinitive.

Of course in the past tense you would say:

  • Did you do exercises yesterday?

Did is an auxiliary which is needed to make a question. Do is from the verb To Do.

DO and DOES – For Emphasis

Sometimes  Do / Does / Did  are used in  positive sentences  to give special  emphasis that what you say is true, despite what the other person thinks. Note that when speaking, the word ( do/does/did ) is stressed.

  • I  do  want to go. (We put stress on the word  DO  to emphasize that we really want to go, even if you think it is not true.)
  • I  did  study for the test. (Contrary to what you may believe… yes, I studied)

Notice that  Did  is used for positive sentences in the past tense and that the main verb is in its base form.

  • Yes, he  does  like broccoli. (You may be surprised but yes, he likes broccoli)
  • You  do  need tickets for the event. (I am emphasizing that fact that tickets ARE needed despite what you think.)

Do - Does - Did - Done

English grammar.

The word DO appears a lot in English.

This is because it can be a verb TO DO (Do / Does / Did / Done) and can also be an AUXILIARY verb (Do / Does / Did).

The Verb - To Do

The verb TO DO has four forms.

  • Present Tense: Do / Does
  • Past Tense: Did
  • Past Participle: Done

TO DO - Present Tense - (Do / Does)

The present tense of TO DO is:

I / you / we / they - DO he / she / it - DOES

  • I do my laundry on Saturdays.
  • They do their chores when they arrive home.
  • He does nothing all day.
  • She does charity work when she has time.

TO DO - Past Tense - (Did)

The past tense of DO is DID for all subjects:

I / you / we / they / he / she / it - DID

  • I did my homework in record time.
  • We did everything we could to help.
  • He did a somersault on the trampoline

TO DO - Past Participle - (Done)

The past participle of DO is DONE . Remember that past participles are accompanied by TO HAVE or TO BE (in the correct tense):

  • I have done my homework.
  • He has done a good job.
  • The video will show you how it is done .
  • The report was done on time.

TO DO - To replace a verb

We sometimes use the verb DO to replace a verb when the meaning is clear or obvious. This replacement is more common in informal spoken English:

  • Do I need to do my hair? (do = brush or comb)
  • Have you done the dishes yet? (done = washed)
  • I'll do the kitchen if you do the lawns (do = clean, do = mow)

DO vs DOES in Questions

To make a question in the Simple Present Tense in English we normally put the auxiliary Do or Does at the beginning of the question before the subject.

Affirmative: You speak Arabic. Question: Do you speak Arabic?

You will see that we add DO at the beginning of the affirmative sentence to change it into a question. We use Do when the subject is I , you , we or they .

Affirmative: He speaks Arabic. Question: Does he speak Arabic?

When the subject is he , she or it , we add DOES at the beginning to make the affirmative sentence a question. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in the question.

NOTE: We DON'T use Do or Does in questions that have the verb To Be or Modal Verbs (can, must, might, should etc.)

Examples of DO and DOES in questions:

  • Do you like my shirt?
  • Does he drive to work?
  • Does she like hamburgers?
  • Where do you live?

Notice there can be other words before Do and Does such as Question Words (Who, What etc.)

DID in Questions

To make a question in the Past Tense in English we normally put the auxiliary DID at the beginning of the question or before the main subject.

DID is used with regular AND irregular verbs in English. (Exception is To Be and Modal Verbs such as Can )

Both Do and Does in present tense questions become Did in past tense questions. Compare the following:

Present: Do they live in Spain? Past: Did they live in Spain?

The main verb ( live in the example above) is in its base form (of the infinitive). The auxiliary DID shows that the question is in the past tense .

NOTICE: The only difference between a question in the present tense and a question in the past tense is the change in the auxiliary verb.

Examples of DID in questions:

  • Did you visit a museum while you were there?
  • Did the bus arrive late?
  • Did she like the surprise?
  • Why did you say that?

DON'T - DOESN'T - Negative Sentences

To make a negative sentence in English we normally use Don't or Doesn't in the present sentence.

Don't and Doesn't are used in negative sentences with all verbs EXCEPT To Be and Modal verbs (Can, might, should etc.).

Affirmative: You speak Spanish. Negative: You don't speak Spanish.

You will see that we add don't between the subject and the verb. We use Don't when the subject is I , you , we or they .

Affirmative: He speaks Spanish. Negative: He doesn't speak Spanish.

When the subject is he , she or it , we add doesn't between the subject and the verb to make a negative sentence. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in the negative sentence.

Examples of sentences using don't and doesn't :

  • I don't like junk food.
  • We don't need a dictionary.
  • He doesn't want to get out of bed.
  • It doesn't rain in the desert.

DIDN'T (DID NOT) - Negative Sentences

In the past tense Didn't is used to make a negative sentence for all subjects (I / you / we / they / he / she / it). This is for regular AND irregular verbs in English. (Exception is To Be and Modal Verbs such as Can )

Compare the following:

Present: They don't live in Japan. Past: They didn't live in Japan.

The main verb ( live in the example above) is in its base form (of the infinitive). The auxiliary DIDN'T shows that the sentence is negative AND in the past tense.

NOTICE: The only difference between a negative sentence in the present tense and a negative sentence in the past tense is the change in the auxiliary verb.

Examples of sentences using Didn't :

  • I didn't want to go
  • He didn't study for the exam.
  • We didn't have time to finish the report.
  • They didn't like the movie.

DO - For Emphasis

Sometimes Do / Does / Did are used in positive sentences to give special emphasis . Note that when speaking, the word ( do/does/did ) is stressed.

  • I do want to go. (We put stress on the word DO to emphasize that we want to go)
  • You do need to take an umbrella.
  • He does like spinach. (You may be surprised but yes, he likes spinach)
  • I did study. (Contrary to what you may believe... yes, I studied)

Notice that Did is used for positive sentences in the past tense and that the main verb is in its base form.

Do can also appear at the beginning of an imperative sentence to emphasize the importance of that imperative verb.

  • Do call when you arrive.
  • Do tell him that I will be waiting for him.

How To Use Did in Sentences?

Did is an auxiliary verb used in sentences to form questions, negatives, and emphasize past actions. When constructing a sentence with did , it is important to remember a few key rules.

Forming Questions : Use did at the beginning of a sentence to form questions in the past tense. For example, “Did you go to the store?” In this case, did helps to indicate that the action (going to the store) took place in the past.

Forming Negatives : To make a negative sentence in the past tense, include did not (didn’t) before the main verb. For instance, “She did not finish her homework on time.” or “They didn’t attend the meeting.”

Emphasizing Past Actions : Use did to emphasize past actions. For example, “He did complete the task as requested.” Here, did adds emphasis to the action of completing the task.

Verb Forms : When did is used in a sentence, the main verb that follows should be in its base form (infinitive form) without adding -s, -ed, or other endings. For instance, “Did you see the movie?” – “see” is the base form and not “saw”.

By keeping these guidelines in mind, you can effectively use did in sentences to ask questions, make negatives, and emphasize past actions in English.

In exploring sentences with the keyword “did,” it becomes evident that this word is often used for forming questions, making statements in the past tense, and emphasizing actions that have been completed. From simple sentences like “Did you go to the store yesterday?” to complex structures such as “Not only did she finish the project on time, but she also exceeded expectations,” the word “did” plays a crucial role in English grammar.

By analyzing sentences with “did,” individuals can improve their understanding of past events, actions, and inquiries. This keyword serves as a versatile tool for constructing questions, denoting actions that have taken place, and highlighting specific achievements or outcomes. Developing proficiency in using “did” can enhance communication skills and aid in conveying clear and concise messages in both spoken and written forms.

Can You End a Sentence With Did?

By: Author Dr. Patrick Capriola

Posted on Published: October 29, 2021

There are certain basic grammar rules in English that speakers and writers adhere to most of the time, even though they aren’t actual rules. For example, some students are under the impression that they should not end a sentence with a verb or a preposition, so they might wonder whether it is correct to end a sentence with “did.”

“Did” is only used at the end of a sentence as an intransitive verb, where it doesn’t require a direct object or acts as a substitute verb. Under most other conditions “did” functions as the past tense form of the verb “do,” and we can use it as either a transitive or intransitive verb.

We’ll define “did” and discuss the transitive and intransitive use of the verb. Then we’ll show you how we can end sentences with “did” without confusion and why some English speakers and writers try to avoid verbs and prepositions at the end of a sentence.

What Does “Did” Mean?

“Did” is the past tense form of the irregular verb “to do,” which is a common English verb with a number of definitions. As a main verb, “do” can have any of the following basic meanings:

To perform an action:

  • I will do whatever it takes to win your trust.

To complete something:

  • She did the job well.

To take part in activities:

  • Jack did a lot of training for the athletics meet.

To create or produce:

  • Alison did the website design.

To be enough:

  • If you haven’t got four, then three will do .

“Do” can also function as an auxiliary or helping verb where we use it to make negatives (together with “not”) or to create questions. Consider the examples below to see its use as an auxiliary verb.

  • I did not attend the concert last week. (negative)
  • She does not like broccoli. (negative)
  • Do you want to meet for dinner next week? (question)
  • Did you enjoy the ballet performance? (question)

Finally, “do” can also act as a substitute verb, meaning that we use “do” instead of repeating all the words in a clause ( source ). Consider the examples below.

  • He said he would move to Australia after school, and he did !
  • Person 1: Did you go to the Fundraiser last year?
  • Person 2: Yes, I did .
  • Person 1: Did you forget her birthday?
  • Person 2: I did , even though I set a reminder.

When Can Sentences End With Did?

There are circumstances where you will normally end a sentence with “did.” It often happens more in spoken English than in written English, but it is not incorrect to end your sentences with “did.” Some of the circumstances where you commonly end with “did” include the following.

When You Use “Did” as an Intransitive Verb

All verbs are either transitive or intransitive. A transitive verb is a verb that only makes sense when you include the object, meaning that the action of the verb must happen to something. Intransitive verbs do not require objects ( source ).

Transitive vs. Intransitive Verbs

The verb “discuss,” for instance, is a transitive verb and requires an object. It is correct to say, “The chef discussed different ways of preparing ribs in the video.”

The phrase “different ways of preparing ribs” is the object. You can’t leave out the object phrase and just say, “The chef discussed in the video” because it won’t make sense ( source ).

In the sentence “Attendance increased as finals drew near,“ no object is necessary, so “increased“ is an intransitive verb.

We can use some verbs as transitive or intransitive, and “play” is such a word. You can use it as a transitive verb and say, “Three of the group play the guitar.” Here, “the guitar” is the object. But you can also use it as an intransitive verb and say, “The guitarists play outside.” There is no object in this sentence.

“Did” as Transitive and Intransitive Verb

When you use “did” as a transitive verb, the action of doing must transfer to an object. For example, the following sentences all show “did” functioning as a transitive verb.

  • He always did his duty.
  • Jane did her homework before playing.
  • Jack did some beautiful mosaics.

In this context, “did” cannot be at the end of the sentence because the words after “did” are necessary for the sentence to make sense. The act of doing transfers in these examples to “his duty,” “her homework,” and “some beautiful mosaics.”

When you use “did” as an intransitive verb, it doesn’t require a direct object. Here we are just using it in the context of the action. Intransitive verbs like “did” often operate as the last word in a sentence, especially in answer to a question. Consider the examples below.

  • I copied what he did.
  • She wants to study the same course that John did.
  • Person 1: Did John complete his task?
  • Person 2: Yes, he did.

To find out more about ending a sentence with a verb, read the article “ Can You End a Sentence with Is? ”

Incomplete Clauses Where the Meaning Is Still Obvious

In spoken English, we often leave out parts of a clause or sentence if the meaning is still obvious.

For instance, instead of saying, “John said he might visit the library today, but I don’t think he did visit it today,” you can leave out the part after “did,” and the listener will still know what you mean. It is correct to say, “John said he might visit the library today, but I don’t think he did.”

person wearing black and gray jacket in front of bookshelf

However, when putting the sentence in writing, some people like to complete the whole sentence to maintain a more formal style. They believe it is better to write the full sentence, such as “My secretary said she might order the new stock today, but I don’t think she did order it today.”

The shorter form is actually easier to understand, and it is customary to leave out the part after “did” at the end of the sentence when talking to someone. The meaning of the shortened sentence is quite clear when you say, “My secretary said she might order the new stock today, but I don’t think she did.”

Consider the table below to contrast how the meaning can still be clear when we omit clauses that are implied. All the sentences that end in “did” are what English speakers use in everyday conversations and, for many, the grammatically correct longer versions sound archaic.

When You Use “Did” as a Short Answer and the Meaning Is Clear

We can also use “did” as a short answer standing in place of the main verb of the question:

  • Did she work there?
  • Yes, she did .

The full sentence is “Yes, she did work there” ( source ). The following examples show that the short answer ending with “did” is enough to convey the message:

When You Use “Did” in Combination With “It” as in “It Did”

Another instance where a sentence’s last word is “did” is when it ends with ”it” before “did.” We might do this to emphasize the action of a sentence or the way the subject performed it.

For instance, you could ask, “Do you understand why his behavior changed abruptly the way it did? Here, “it did” emphasizes that it was an abrupt change.

Why Some Want to Avoid Ending Sentences With “Did”

Although it is correct to end a sentence with “did,” some want to avoid using it because of stylistic customs.

Some writers believe that a sentence should never end on a verb because it creates imbalanced sentences. They will, therefore, try to place the verb as soon as possible after the subject of the sentence and follow it with a noun phrase or adverb to balance the sentence.

For example, they will avoid “The visitors are swimming” and construct the sentence as “The visitors are taking a swim” ( source ).

However, if you follow this custom, you could lengthen the sentence artificially. For instance, we can change the easily understandable sentence “Are you blaming Sam for what her mother did?” to the more awkward “Are you blaming Sam for what her mother did in the past?”

What About Ending Sentences With a Preposition?

A related question is whether you can end a sentence with a preposition. A preposition is a small word that usually precedes a noun or pronoun, and it indicates direction, time, place, location, and spatial relationships. Some examples of prepositions include words like “in,” “at,” “on,” “of,” and “after.”

  • She drove to the hospital. (preposition of direction)
  • Let’s meet at 2 p.m. (preposition of time)
  • My basement is below my living room (preposition of place)
  • Jack lives in Germany. (preposition of location)
  • The cat is under the bed. (preposition of spatial relationships)

Long ago, for some unexplained reason, someone determined that it was incorrect to end a sentence with a preposition. This erroneous belief has lingered on, even though The Chicago Manual of Style has refuted this rule since 1906 since it can make sentences sound awkward ( source ).

did homework sentence

You can definitely end a sentence with a preposition, especially if avoiding it would create confusion or sound unnaturally formal ( source ). Many people still try to avoid ending a sentence with a preposition wherever possible, but generally, this sounds more formal.

How Do You Avoid Ending a Sentence With a Preposition?

Generally, to avoid ending a sentence with a preposition, you have to move the preposition earlier in the sentence and follow it with a pronoun.

Consider the sentences below, which we have rewritten to avoid ending with a preposition. Both forms are correct, but the rewritten version definitely sounds more formal. We don’t speak like that, although it may be appropriate in some academic writing styles.

When writing in the passive voice, however, it’s sometimes impossible to avoid ending with a preposition without shifting to the active voice. Consider the examples below, which we cannot reorganize and still make sense.

  • The match was rained off.
  • Your meal has been paid for.

Where Did This Custom Originate?

There are different theories about why some teachers and grammarians advise English speakers not to end sentences with prepositions. One theory traces this back to John Dryden, a 17th-century poet, who criticized fellow writer Ben Jonson for doing so in 1672.

Decades earlier, grammarian Joshua Poole expressed his concern about placing prepositions at the end of sentences. Both these men were trying to make English grammar more in line with Latin, where sentences don’t end in prepositions. This article was written for strategiesforparents.com.

For more on how this custom came about, make sure you read “ Do You End a Question With For? ”

Final Thoughts

You can certainly end a sentence with “did” as an intransitive verb. Grammar rules are supposed to minimize confusion and maximize understanding when using language. However, customs such as not ending sentences with verbs or prepositions can have the opposite effect.

If you regard them as unbending rules, it forces you to rephrase sentences in ways that end up sounding overly formal or even nonsensical.

The best advice for students learning English is to listen for where native English speakers place verbs and prepositions. In doing that, you will “get the feeling” of what sounds correct and acceptable.

The bottom line will always be that you should construct sentences and phrases in such a way that the listener understands what you are saying.

Did vs. Done: Difference Explained (Helpful Examples)

The past tense is one of the hardest things to wrap your head around with English. It comes with so many rules and structures, and each verb requires different past tense forms. This article will explore the past tense of “did” and how you can understand what form works when.

Did or Done: Which Is Correct?

“Did” is correct when using the simple past tense to show that something started happening and finished happening in the past. “Done” is the past participle of “do,” which we use with auxiliary verbs to mean that something could happen based on the tense we work with .

Did or done - Which is correct?

Naturally, the simple past tense, “did,” is much easier to understand. These two examples will show you the key differences between both forms:

  • I did my homework before I even made it home!
  • I have done everything that you’ve asked of me.

“Did” requires no extra language rules. We write it to show that something is already done.

Auxiliary verbs are incredibly important when using the past participle. We need “have” and “done” in the same sentence in the second example because that’s how we create the present perfect tense to show that something has started happening in the past and continues in the present.

When Is “Did” Correct?

Let’s start by exploring both forms slightly more. This will help you to understand them and how they work.

“Did” is correct as the simple past tense. When we want to refer to a thing that we did in the past, we can use “did” with whatever pronoun or object that “did” it.

“Did” is easy to use, and if all past tense forms followed the same simplistic rules, English would be a much easier language to learn. There are no extra forms or verbs that we might need to get this one right.

Example Sentences Using “Did”

The following examples will help you to see how “did” works best.

  • I did everything that you asked of me, and now I’m doing my own thing.
  • I did it! I can’t believe I finally did it!
  • She did it with me, and now she’s gone home.
  • We did it together, which made our victory all the sweeter.
  • They did this, didn’t they! I’ll have their heads for this.
  • You did what? I can’t believe you did those foolish things.

“Did” works when someone has done something in the past, and there’s nothing we can do in the present to change the outcome of whatever happened.

When Is “Done” Correct?

“Done” requires a little more thought. It’s not as simple as “did”, and it comes with certain rules that must be followed to make sure we get the form correct.

“Done” is the past participle of “to do.” On its own, it doesn’t work. It requires an auxiliary verb like “have,” which changes it into the present perfect tense. We can use the past, present, or future perfect tenses depending on the auxiliary that we use with it.

Each perfect tense has a different set of rules that it follows, and they usually mean that something has started happening or will start happening, based on something in the present.

The three forms are:

  • Past perfect: Had done
  • Present perfect: Have done
  • Future perfect: Will have done

It’s not often you’ll come across the past perfect tense, but when you do, you’ll need to know what it means. We use it to show that something has happened in the past, but there might still be something we can do to affect it in the future.

The present perfect tense is much more common, and it refers to doing something in the past and finishing or completing that thing in the present.

The future perfect uses “will” and “have” as auxiliary verbs, and we use them to talk about a situation that might occur in the future based on the choices we make in the present.

Example sentences using “Done”

Some examples will help you to understand the phrase, but we’ll split it into each perfect tense to make them easier for you to understand.

Past Perfect

  • I had done everything I needed to do, so I made the mistake of going home early.
  • I had done what I was told , but apparently, that wasn’t enough for my boss.

“Had done” is the past perfect tense. We use it to talk about something we did in the past, and there is some effect or impact that we’re carrying with us in the present.

Present Perfect

  • I have done the chores you asked of me! Can I go now
  • I have done the tasks you needed from me, and I’ve put them on your desk.

“Have done” is the present perfect tense. It refers to something we started doing in the past, but we might have finished doing them at that moment in the present, or we might still be doing them going into the future.

Future Perfect

  • I will have done everything on my agenda before Tuesday if I play my cards right.
  • I will have done too many things this week if I’m not careful.

“Will have” is the future perfect tense. We use this to set up hypothetical future scenarios that might occur based on our actions in the present. It’s up to us if we then want to change those actions or keep them up.

“Have Did” Vs. “Have Done”

Now that we’ve covered everything that’s important about the differences, this section should be easy.

“Have done” is correct because we need the auxiliary “have” with the past participle “done.” “Have did” is never correct because the simple past tense “did” doesn’t require an auxiliary verb like “have” to make sense.

  • Correct: I have done my homework.
  • Incorrect: I have did my homework.

Final Thoughts

We use “did” as the simple past tense of “done” to say that something happened in the past. “Done” is the perfect tense, which is much more difficult to understand. However, once you understand auxiliary verbs like “have”, “done” becomes much easier to work with.

Types of Sentences

Written by tutor nevin b..

There are four types of sentences that are used in writing – declarative, exclamatory, imperative and interrogative. Each type is used in a specific situation and each has its own punctuation mark.

Declarative

Declarative sentences make a statement and they are punctuated by a period. Some examples include:

I went to the store yesterday. The brown dog jumped over the fence. Ms. Jones wore a red shirt.

Exclamatory

Exclamatory sentences contain a strong emotion and end with an exclamation mark. Some examples include:

I love you so much! I am excited to watch this movie! It’s a great day!

Imperative sentences make a command or request. They typically end with a period, but sometimes end with an exclamation mark. Some examples include:

Take out the trash. Please be quiet. Give me your wallet!

Interrogative

Interrogative sentences ask a question and they end with a question mark. Some examples include:

Where did you go yesterday? What is the capital of Maine? Did you finish your homework?

In verbal English, we use the four types of sentences frequently. It is just as important to include different types in your writing. Let’s take a look at an example of a paragraph that only uses declarative sentences.

Last week my family and I went to the amusement park. We had a lot of fun. We went on many rides including the roller coaster and Ferris wheel. I was scared to go on the roller coaster at first but I’m sure glad I went on it. At the end of the day, I was happy but ready to go home.

Now let’s take a look at a similar paragraph that utilizes all four types of sentences.

Last week my family and I went to the amusement park. It was a blast! Have you been on a roller coaster before? It was my first time and I loved it. I was scared at first but I told myself, “Just do it!” and I’m sure glad I did. I had a great day with my family but by the end of the day I was tired and ready to go home. Now tell me about a fun time you’ve experienced!

As you may notice, using different types of sentences makes the paragraph more engaging and entertaining.

Brazilian soccer star Dani Alves sits during his trial in Barcelona, Spain, on Feb. 5, 2024. Alves has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a young woman in a Barcelona nightclub and has been sentenced Alves to 4 1/2 years in prison.

BARCELONA, Spain — Dani Alves, one of the most successful soccer players of his generation, was found guilty of raping a woman in a Barcelona nightclub and sentenced to four years and six months in prison on Thursday.

The former Brazil and Barcelona right back was convicted in Spain under a new sexual liberty law that emphasizes the lack of consent of the victim as key to determining sex crimes.

A three-judge panel at the Barcelona Provincial Court convicted the 40-year-old Alves of sexual assault for the incident on Dec. 31, 2022.

The court ordered Alves to pay 150,000 euros ($162,000) in compensation to the victim, banned him from approaching the victim's home or place of work, and from communicating with her by any means for nine years.

"I still believe in the innocence of Mr. Alves," Inés Guardiola, Alves' lawyer, said. "I need to study the ruling, but I can tell you that of course we will appeal."

Guardiola said Alves was "calm and collected" when he heard the verdict in court.

"We are satisfied," David Sáenz, a member of the victim's legal team, said, "because this verdict recognizes what we have always known, that the victim told the truth and that she has suffered."

The victim's lawyer, Ester García, said on Wednesday she and her client would not be present for the verdict.

The victim said Alves raped her in the bathroom of a Barcelona nightclub on the morning of Dec. 31, 2022. The court considered it proven that the victim did not consent to sex and there was evidence, in addition to the defendant's testimony, that she was raped.

Alves testified: "I am not that kind of man"

Alves denied during the three-day trial this month that he raped the woman, testifying to the court "I am not that kind of man."

State prosecutors had sought a nine-year prison sentence for Alves while the lawyers representing his accuser wanted 12 years. His defense asked for his acquittal, or if found guilty a one-year sentence plus 50,000 euros compensation for the victim.

The sentence of four years and six months is near the lowest sentence for a rape conviction, which when the rape took place was penalized by four to 12 years under Spanish law. That has since been modified to six to 12 years. The court in its sentence said it considered favorably for Alves that he had "before the trial paid the court 150,000 euros to be given to the victim without any conditions attached."

Sáenz said his legal team did not agree with the application of the extenuating circumstance, saying the money did not compensate the harm done to their client. During the trial, medical experts testified she was suffering from post-traumatic trauma.

"Clearly (it does not compensate), but that is what the court decided," Sáenz said. "We have to examine the sentence to see if its contents are adequate for his acts."

The state prosecutor's office said it will study the verdict and consider whether to appeal.

Spain Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz said she hoped the verdict "serves as an exemplary measure for all the sexist behaviors that women suffer in all areas of our lives."

The case follows adoption of Spain's "only yes means yes" law

The Alves case was the first high-profile sex crime since Spain overhauled its legislation in 2022 to make consent central to defining a sex crime in response to an upswell of protests after a gang-rape case during the San Fermin bull-running festival in Pamplona in 2016.

The legislation popularly known as the "only yes means yes" law defines consent as an explicit expression of a person's will, making it clear that silence or passivity do not equal consent. The law, however, initially led to reduced sentences for hundreds of sex offenders because it set up lower minimum sentences, like the one applied to Alves, before being reformed.

In Spain: Protests As Five Men Cleared Of Rape Charges

The Two-Way

In spain: protests as five men cleared of rape charges.

Irene Montero, the former equality minister who championed the "only yes means yes" law, welcomed the ruling.

"The sentence against Dani Alves clearly establishes that he committed sexual assault because the victim did not consent. It is the result of the feminist fight for the right to sexual freedom and for putting consent at the center," she wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Guardiola based her defense during the trial on video from the nightclub security cameras that she said showed how the woman danced "with sexualized movements" that "showed her interest" in Alves before the alleged assault.

García, the victim's lawyer, said at the close of the trial that the new law made it irrelevant how her client may have behaved with Alves beforehand.

"I don't care (how she was dancing), when she said 'No', that meant 'No.' That is why the law was changed," García said. "The debate is no longer whether the victim put up resistance."

Alves has been in jail since being detained on Jan. 20, 2023. His requests for bail were denied because the court considered him a flight risk. Brazil does not extradite its own citizens when they are sentenced in other countries.

The victim told state prosecutors she danced with Alves and willingly entered the nightclub bathroom, but that later when she wanted to leave he would not let her. She said he slapped her, insulted her and forced her to have sexual relations against her will.

A judge dismisses a lawsuit against Cristiano Ronaldo over rape allegations

A judge dismisses a lawsuit against Cristiano Ronaldo over rape allegations

A police officer who testified during the trial said the victim had to overcome her fears that "nobody would believe her" before she formally accused Alves. Another officer said the woman told him "I don't want money, I want justice."

Alves modified his defense during the investigative phase while in custody, first denying any sexual contact with her before admitting to sexual relations that he said were consensual. He said he had been trying to save his marriage by not admitting to the encounter initially.

During the trial, his defense focused on trying to show that Alves was drunk when he met the woman. The court, however, did not consider that an extenuating circumstance in its ruling.

His conviction shatters Alves' legacy as one of soccer's most successful players.

Alves won dozens of titles with elite clubs including Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain. He also helped Brazil win two Copa Americas and an Olympic gold medal at age 38. He played at his third World Cup, the only major title he hasn't won, in 2022. He played for Barcelona from 2008-16, helping to win three Champions Leagues and six Spanish leagues, and briefly rejoined the club in 2022. He still has a residence near the city.

He was with Mexican club Pumas when he was arrested. Pumas terminated his contract immediately.

Three days after his arrest, Alves was transferred by officials for safety reasons to the Brians 2 prison about 45 minutes northwest of Barcelona. He has been there ever since.

Mother of Nottingham attack victim: &#39;I was feeling so dejected and let down&#39; following murderer&#39;s initial sentencing

The sentence of the Nottingham attacker who stabbed two students and a caretaker to death will be referred to the Court of Appeal after the attorney general found it to be "unduly lenient".

Valdo Calocane was last month given an indefinite order to be detained at a high-security hospital for killing Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19, and Ian Coates, 65, in June 2023.

The victims' families criticised the sentence, as well as authorities who they say could have helped prevent the tragedy. The relatives have now welcomed today's announcement.

Prosecutors have accepted Calocane&#39;s pleas of not guilty to murder and guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility due to mental illness, for the murders of Grace O&#39;Malley-Kumar, Barnaby Webber and Ian Coates, and the attempted murder of three others, in a spate of attacks in Nottingham on June 13 2023. Issue date: Tuesday January 23, 2024.

Calocane, who tried to kill three other people by knocking them over in a van on the same night as the stabbings, was handed the sentence in January after prosecutors accepted his manslaughter plea rather than pursuing a murder conviction.

The deal was done as experts agreed he had paranoid schizophrenia so wasn't fully responsible for his actions.

The victims' families had met Attorney General Victoria Prentis and Solicitor General Robert Courts before they reached their decision to refer the sentence to the Court of Appeal.

The families said in a statement after the decision: "We were very glad to hear that the attorney general has agreed with us that the sentencing given to Valdo Calocane, who so viciously and calculatedly killed our loved ones was wrong.

The families added that they are calling for "organisational and individual accountability" and "where relevant, proper change made".

Mr Justice Turner, who sentenced Calocane last month, said the 32-year-old killer would "very probably" be detained in a high-security hospital for the rest of his life.

The victims' families were united outside court as they accused the Crown Prosecution Service, police and the NHS of multiple failures.

They said prosecutors had already made up their minds when they informed them they would accept Calocane's manslaughter plea.

"At no point during the previous five-and-a-half-months were we given any indication that this could conclude in anything other than murder," said Mr Webber's mum Emma.

She said although Calocane was mentally unwell, the attacks were premeditated and "he knew entirely that it was wrong but he did it anyway".

Emma Webber speaks outside court

Nottingham Crown Court heard he had previously been detained in hospital four times under mental health laws and had a history of refusing his medication.

Calocane was also arrested for assaulting a police officer in September 2021, involved in criminal damage and once visited MI5 headquarters to ask them to stop "controlling him".

Ms Webber accused Nottinghamshire Police of having "blood on your hands" after it emerged Calocane had been arrested for assaulting the police officer.

Calocane's arrest warrant was still outstanding at the time of the killings.

Rob Griffin, Nottinghamshire Police's assistant chief constable, admitted "we should have done more to arrest him" after he failed to appear in court for assaulting the officer.

However, he said it was unlikely Calocane would have been jailed and there wasn't anything "obvious" to suggest he would commit the savage attacks.

It comes as the police watchdog, known as the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), carries out an investigation into contact made by Nottinghamshire Police with Calocane. It is also investigating Leicestershire Police for the same reason.

YouTuber Ruby Franke sentenced to prison for child abuse

Ruby Franke, a Utah mother who was known for documenting her strict parenting on social media, was sentenced Tuesday to at least four years in prison for subjecting her children to what prosecutors described as “physical torture.”

A tearful Franke, 42, said during the sentencing hearing in Washington County, Utah, that she is “willing to serve a prison sentence as long as it takes to unravel what I believed.” Franke — who regularly posted videos of her family on YouTube, including how she disciplined her children — then accused her business partner, former therapist Jodi Hildebrandt, of brainwashing her into abusing her children.

“For the past four years, I have chosen to follow counsel and guidance that have led me to a dark delusion,” Franke said.

Hildebrandt, 54, received an identical sentence Tuesday. She and Franke pleaded guilty in December to four counts of child abuse each. The women’s sentences of one to 15 years per count will run consecutively. Utah law prohibits consecutive penalties from exceeding 30 years. The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole will determine the duration of their sentences.

Franke’s and Hildebrandt’s attorneys did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday evening.

In court, Franke’s attorney LaMar Winward said his client had been “indoctrinated” by Hildebrandt. Douglas Terry, who represented Hildebrandt, disputed that characterization, saying the former therapist “is not the person she has been portrayed to be.”

The cases drew national attention — and rippled across Utah’s conservative religious circles, in which the women were deeply entwined — after Franke and Hildebrandt, who had appeared together in parenting and life-coaching social media videos, were arrested and accused of abusing Franke’s youngest two children.

What to know about Ruby Franke, parenting YouTuber charged with child abuse

The two women were originally charged in August with six counts of aggravated child abuse each after Franke’s 12-year-old son escaped from a window at Hildebrandt’s home in Ivins, Utah. According to arrest records, the son, who appeared “emaciated and malnourished,” escaped to a neighbor’s home and asked for food and water. Responding officers observed “deep lacerations from being tied up with rope” and duct tape around the boy’s extremities — prompting a search of Hildebrandt’s home, where police found Franke’s 10-year-old daughter in a similar state.

Months later, Franke and Hildebrandt reached a deal with the prosecution: guilty pleas in exchange for the removal of two of their six counts. Under the terms of the agreement, the women admitted to subjecting the children to treatment prosecutors described as tantamount to “physical torture” and “severe emotional harm” — regularly denying the children food, water and beds, and isolating them from others.

According to court documents, in one instance, Franke’s son’s head was held underwater. In another, Franke’s daughter was forced to repeatedly jump onto a cactus. The children were also forced to work and run outside, barefoot, under the scorching southern Utah heat — resulting in sunburns, “scabs, blisters, and sloughing skin,” court records state.

The plea agreement notes that the women described their treatment as acts of “love” to the children, who were told “these things were being done to [them] in order to help” them because they were “evil” and needed to “repent,” prosecutors wrote.

Franke, a mother of six, rose to prominence in the 2010s when she started a YouTube channel called “8 Passengers,” which focused on her family’s life in Springville, Utah. At its peak, the channel reached about 2.5 million viewers.

From mommy bloggers to TikTok stars: How creators built a $250B industry

But concerns began to swirl before Franke’s arrest — particularly after her son Chad said in a 2020 video that he slept on a bean bag for months as a punishment, The Washington Post previously reported. In another widely criticized video, Franke said her daughter needed to go hungry after the 6-year-old had forgotten to pack her own food for school. The episodes led to a petition , signed by more than 17,800 people in 2020, that called for an investigation.

After Utah child protective services visited Franke’s home, she defended her parenting style to Business Insider , saying: “What people aren’t understanding is that we give our children choice in everything. We are teaching our children to be self-governing.”

By 2021, her YouTube channel had lost steam, The Post reported . It was removed from the platform a year later.

In 2022, Franke began working with “ConneXions,” an online self-improvement program that Hildebrandt founded in 2012. In a slew of reviews, participants criticized the program for promoting isolation and urging people to cut off family members or acquaintances who don’t abide by its teachings. The two also began posting under their “Moms of Truth” social media page, which was met with similar criticism for their parenting advice.

YouTube shut down the ConneXions channel shortly after Franke and Hildebrandt were arrested, Business Insider reported.

As family vloggers rack up controversies, some followers can’t quit them

After Franke’s arrest, the mommy blogger’s eldest daughter wrote on Instagram that she was “so glad justice is being served,” The Post previously reported . Franke’s sisters Ellie Mecham, Bonnie Hoellein and Julie Deru, also parenting influencers, posted a joint statement on their Instagram accounts saying Franke’s and Hildebrandt’s arrests “needed to happen.”

Washington County Attorney Eric Clarke (R) agreed at Franke’s sentencing Tuesday.

“Had the older of the children not had the courage to run away and ask a neighbor to call the police, heaven only knows how much longer he could have survived in that situation,” Clarke said.

Shortly after Franke’s sentencing, Hildebrandt appeared in court, where she said she loved Franke’s children and hoped they could heal “physically and emotionally.”

However, Judge John Walton — who presided over both hearings — referenced Hildebrandt’s career as a licensed therapist, saying that adults with such specialized training “are supposed to protect children.”

“You didn’t do that in this case,” he said. “In this case, you terrorized children.”

Kim Bellware and Kelsey Ables contributed to this report.

Parenting YouTuber Ruby Franke sentenced to four consecutive sentences for child abuse

A woman with short, wavy, shoulder length brown hair in prison clothes blue and white striped sits before judge

Ruby Franke, a Utah mother of six who gave parenting advice to millions via a once-popular YouTube channel, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for the abuse of her children.

Franke shared a tearful apology to her children for physically and emotionally abusing them before a judge sentenced her on Tuesday (local time).

Franke told Judge John Walton that she would not argue for a shorter sentence before she stood to thank local police officers, doctors and social workers for being the "angels" who saved her children from her at a time when she says she was under the influence of her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt.

Hildebrandt, a Utah mental health counsellor who had been hired to work with Franke's youngest son before going into business with Franke, also received a prison sentence on Tuesday of up to 60 years.

"I'll never stop crying for hurting your tender souls," Franke said to her children, who were not present at the sentencing hearing.

"My willingness to sacrifice all for you was masterfully manipulated into something very ugly. I took from you all that was soft and safe and good."

Franke and Hildebrandt had each pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse for trying to convince Franke's two youngest children that they were evil, possessed and needed to be punished to repent.

The women were arrested at Hildebrandt's house in the southern Utah city of Ivins last August after Franke's 12-year-old son escaped through a window and asked a neighbour to call the police, according to a 911 call released by the St. George Police Department.

'Concentration camp-like setting'

The boy was thin, covered in wounds and had duct tape around his ankles and wrists.

He told investigators that Hildebrandt had put ropes on his limbs and used cayenne pepper and honey to dress his cuts, according to a search warrant.

State prosecutor Eric Clarke described the environment in which Franke and Hildebrandt had kept the children as "a concentration camp-like setting".

While Franke had shown remorse and cooperated with lawyers, Mr Clarke said Hildebrandt had not and continues to place blame on the children.

Hildebrandt's lawyer, Douglas Terry, said his client is not the remorseless woman she has been portrayed to be and accepts responsibility for her actions.

"I sincerely love these children. I desire for them to heal physically and emotionally," Hildebrandt said on Tuesday in court.

She reminded the judge that she accepted her plea deal instead of going to trial because she did not want the children to have to relive their trauma by testifying.

Hildebrandt pleaded guilty in December to four of her six counts of aggravated child abuse, and two counts were dismissed as part of her plea deal.

Franke also pleaded guilty to four of her six charges and not guilty to two. Each charge carries a prison sentence of one to 15 years, which will run consecutively.

Franke and her husband, Kevin Franke, launched 8 Passengers on YouTube in 2015 and amassed a large following as they documented their experiences raising six children.

She later began working with Hildebrandt's counselling company, ConneXions Classroom, offering parenting seminars, launching another YouTube channel and publishing content on their shared Instagram account, Moms of Truth.

Franke admitted in her plea deal to kicking her son while wearing boots, holding his head under water and closing off his mouth and nose with her hands.

Franke and Hildebrandt said they also forced him into hours of physical labour in the summer heat without much food or water, causing dehydration and blistering sunburns.

The boy was told that everything being done to him was an act of love, according to the plea agreements.

Hildebrandt also has admitted to coercing Franke's youngest daughter, who was nine at the time, to jump into a cactus multiple times and run barefoot on dirt roads until her feet blistered.

The boy and girl were taken to the hospital after the arrests and placed in state custody along with two more of their siblings.

Prior to her 2023 arrest, Franke was already a divisive figure in the parent vlogging world.

The Franke parents were criticised online for certain parenting decisions, including for banning their oldest son from his bedroom for seven months for pranking his younger brother.

In other videos, she talked about refusing to take lunch to a kindergartener who forgot it at home and threatening to cut the head off a young girl's stuffed toy to punish her for cutting things in the house.

The 8 Passengers YouTube channel has since ended, and Mr Franke has filed for divorce.

Both Franke and Hildebrandt have 30 days to appeal their sentences.
