However, I've read many people believe that grad schools rarely accept people straight out of undergrad, and would rather a writer show their capabilities and determination outside of the undergrad environment for a few years. Is this true? And, if so, would I be wasting my time applying for colleges later this year?

Yeah I can pipe in a bit here. I was accepted for the fall semester in 2020 after submitting a portfolio I had worked on for the past few years (thanks to my cegep program in part focusing on creative writing). I took a couple creative writing classes in college as electives, a community college class a few years later, and, most recently, courses here and there at my local writer's center.

This for sure. I went to an AWP conference and spoke with several MFA programs. Many, if not most, poo-poo'd the idea of genre writing. I was leaning towards JHU and a school in Florida (can't remember which, but I was referred to it by a undergrad professor) but ended up choosing a low-residency program that wasn't as picky about genres.
