<i>Beast (RAW)</i> Review: An Ill-Formed Creature Even Firing-On-All-Cylinders Vijay Cannot Pummel Into Shape

Cast: Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Yogi Babu, Selvaraghavan, Shine Tom Chacko, Redin Kingsley, VTV Ganesh, Shaji Chen, Aparna Das

Director: Nelson

Rating : Two and a half stars (out of 5)

Beast is no Master . It's a monster that could have done with more narrative muscle. Notwithstanding the grand canvas, the elaborate action sequences that Vijay thrives on and music composer Anirudh's throbbing score, writer-director Nelson Dilipkumar's third film is a weird concoction - a humour-laced actioner that struggles to blend comedy with all-out pyrotechnics. The result is rather ungainly.

Trouble stems primarily from the director's eschewal of a key trick that stood him in good stead in his previous film Doctor (2021), a deliciously cock-eyed comedy-thriller. The trope hinged on the conjuring up of lively, angular characters around a star (Sivakarthikeyan) capable of carrying a movie on his shoulders and pulling in the crowds.

Vijay obviously has far greater box-office clout. It goes without saying that, on a good day, he needs no assistance to fill the screen. Yet, no matter how much proven wallop a megastar might bring to the table, he still needs a strong and cohesive script to sustain the combination of fire and flint that drives him. Consistent writing is conspicuous by its absence in Beast .

The supporting cast of the film has many of the talents we saw and loved in Doctor - Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Shiva Arvind, Sunil Reddy, et al - but the value that they register here falls way short of expectations. A repeat does not materialise. Only one of the actors who is in the Beast cast to provide comic relief manages to serve the purpose of his existence - VTV Ganesh, who has his share of laconic one-liners. He delivers them with aplomb.

It would be pertinent here to point out that this review of Beast is actually a review of the Hindi version of the Tamil film (it is titled RAW perhaps with the intention of separating it from the original language cut) so the nuances of the jokes that are meant to have a leavening effect on a serious hostage drama might have been lost in translation.

One sleight in the Hindi version of Beast that is instantly jarring is the projection of the protagonist, ex-RAW agent Veera Raghavan, as someone akin to Salman Khan - commitment, khud ki bhi nahin sunta and all that are alluded to. Vijay, in the guise of an intrepid, unbeatable spy who is likened to James Bond, sets his own rules and his persona cannot be hostage to odious comparisons. He swings through the film with all the flair at his command and it is, doubtless, of an impressive magnitude.

The script may be a major letdown but director Nelson dares to subvert a significant norm of a superstar-led action saga - he does away with the bells and whistles that go with a stage-setting entry scene. In Beast, Vijay pops up without any pomp and show, flashes half a smile at the audience, and goes about his job in a manner that serves to underscore the hero's phlegmatic nature.

However, as the subsequent action scenes unfold (many of them are predictably slowed down for effect) Vijay is Vijay every inch of the way. But the soldier he plays shuns 'hero worship'. Veera Raghavan, insouciance personified, delivers the goods like a well-trained, unemotional pro and expects no applause.

Beast opens with a sequence that ends in major emotional trauma for the otherwise unflappable and super-competent protagonist. In the course of an operation to capture a dreaded terrorist in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, he is lied to by his own men. As a result, he causes avoidable collateral damage even as he succeeds in his mission. That leaves a deep scar on his psyche.

Not that his post-traumatic stress disorder continues to an important factor a few months down the line, but a hostage situation in a Chennai shopping mall that he wades into nearly a year later does trigger him. He hears the wails of a distressed child and he cannot hold himself back. Guilt and anguish bubble to the fore and he decides that he cannot stand by and let innocents fall prey to a war not of their making.

A bunch of armed terrorists have overrun the mall and taken a large number of visitors hostage. Veera Raghavan hides along with a few other people, including the girl (Pooja Hegde) he has only just run into, in a part of the building. Egged on by Altaf Hussain (Selvaraghavan), the interlocutor between the Indian government and the terror mastermind Saif (Ankur Vikal, whose face is revealed only in the second half of the film), he swings into action.

Veera Raghavan the action hero is obviously up to the challenge. But, trapped in a faltering, feeble screenplay, the actors are left groping in the dark, a situation not too different from the one that the audience finds itself in.

The terrorists on the screen are a bunch of bumbling fools. They try their darndest to instill fear in the hostages. They are laughably inept. They are more lambs to the slaughter than fearsome ruthless gunmen. Only one of them (played by Shine Tom Chacko) stands out because the script deigns it fit to humanise him and give him a sentimental back story.

An entirely superfluous romantic track involving Pooja Hegde (totally wasted) threatens to veer into love-triangle terrain when Aparna Das (wasted just as much) strays into the frame in the garb of an Indian Police Service recruit keen to learn from the best. It yields nothing. Like much else in Beast, it succumbs to the excessive din.

In the absence of an antagonist who can stand up to the invincible hero - two seem to be in the running, the man played by Ankur Vikal and another essayed by Lilliput Faruqui, who is barely seen and does not speak until the film is about to end - Beast does not generate any genuine fears or thrills.

Beast has no fangs and its roar is no more than surround sound. Meant only for Vijay fans - in this regard, the film spares no effort - it is the sort of vehicle that does little justice to either the star or the director. Both of them punch well below their weight in a film that deserves only two stars.

We are going with half an extra star because Beast draws attention in its own facile but essential way to something that no contemporary Bollywood movie will - the cynical ways in which pettifogging politicians seek to derive electoral brownie points from the bravery of soldiers and the misery of the masses. Beast dares to make a home minister, a bumbling self-seeker, the butt of its barbs.

But all said and done, Beast is an ill-formed creature that even a firing-on-all-cylinders Vijay cannot pummel into shape.

Beast (Raw) Box Office Review: Thalapathy Vijay Shoulders A ‘Feast’ For Fans But Won’t Be Setting Ticket Windows On Fire As KGF Chapter 2 May Thrash Its Existence!

Nothing but wrong timing is to be blamed.

raw south movie review

Director: Nelson

Producers: Kalanithi Maran (Sun Pictures)

Beast (Raw) Box Office Review: Expectations

Thalapathy Vijay is arguably the biggest star of Tamil cinema right now. I enjoyed his work in Master as it was a dose of wholesome entertainment. So when the posters, songs and trailer were of Beast (Raw in Hindi) unveiled, my excitement got to the next level. It got icing on the cake when the makers announced it to be Vijay’s first-ever pan Indian film. Till this point, I was damn excited!

Things went downhill (not just for me but for all Vijay fans in the Hindi belt) when no efforts were seen to promote the film in Hindi. It has been worse on distribution level as till yesterday night, shows were still getting listed on Bookmyshow for advance booking.

So, even though Thalapathy Vijay is a known phenomenon among a good chunk of the Hindi audience, no active promotions from the team and royal ignorance towards the Hindi belt has worsened things from the box office perspective as far as opening day or weekend is concerned. Honestly speaking, a majority of moviegoers in the Hindi belt isn’t even aware of this film’s arrival or its Hindi title.

All these things give vibes of a passable affair. But is it turning the game with its content and making its place to shine at the box office? Well, keep reading to know more.

Beast (Raw) Box Office Review: Impact

As mentioned above, low awareness among the Hindi audience has definitely affected the film a lot as occupancy has been low today. But what’s good is that, for Thalapathy Vijay fans, the film is a true feast as it’s his one-man show. Thalapathy has delivered what his fans were expecting from him.

The word-of-mouth among audiences in mass belts is decent, so that’s good news for makers. But is it enough to make it another Pushpa at the box office? Definitely not!

Remember, there’s a monster awaiting to compete in the form of KGF Chapter 2, which also caters to the mass audience. Its advance booking is already on an exceptional level, and to fight such a phenomenon, the content needs to be extraordinary and not just decent.

In many theatres, as per Bookmyshow, shows for Beast have been lowered and replaced by KGF Chapter 2 from tomorrow onwards. Exhibitors are damn confident about KGF 2, and things aren’t looking that bright for Thalapathy Vijay’s film at the box office. Things could have been much different if there wasn’t any clash.

Beast (Raw) Box Office Review: Final Verdict

Beast is a decent mass entertainer and could have been a good success if arrived solo. But as of now, it is threatened by KGF Chapter 2. Considering the hype of Yash starrer, Vijay’s film will suffer badly even if the former turns out to be a decent product. And if KGF 2 manages to deliver more than expected, Vijay’s film will disappear just what Thanos’ snap did to half of the universe!

To sum it up, no marketing efforts and bad release timing has landed Beast in an unfortunate situation. The film will earn between 10-15 crores with its Hindi version, and a lot depends on how KGF Chapter 2 turns out to be.

When Julia Ducournau debuted Raw , mixed reactions ranging from audience members fainting to grand praise circulated the grotesque scenes and ominous coming-of-age film. We’re introduced to ( Garance Marillier ) at her crossroads of leaving behind a seemingly normal life with her parents, and an energetic high school-esque college experience with her older sister, Alexia ( Ella Rumf ) . Coming from an overprotective mother who’s heavily instilled a vegetarian lifestyle for the family, Justine appears as an introverted personality, visibly nervous of high expectations as both her parents attended the veterinarian institute where she is about to make her debut to train as a vet.

RELATED: Five Disturbing Horror Movies to Get You Into the New French Extremity

Frustrated with her surprise male roommate and aggressively thrown into a midnight class initiation, Justine flows with the animalistic turmoil alongside her roommate, Adrien ( Rabah Naït Oufella ). When she finally connects with Alexia during a rave, Justine’s pure nature is exposed and their sibling dynamic of leading and following start clashing. Throughout the film, Justice wanders and observes everyone around her with curiosity and a fascination for exploration. Her education of animal physiology and animal rights become heavy subjects of debate amongst her and fellow classmates. And as the semester goes on, she plunges further into the typical college student stressors (exams, social gossip, professor connections). Through this, it becomes clear that the upperclassmen truly run the school, with education as a mere backdrop.

In an effort to balance social normality with exemplary student achievements, as well as being peer pressured into eating a piece of raw meat as part of another initiation ritual, Justine partakes in nauseating habits like hair chewing, skin picking, and blood drawing itch fests. Alexia’s abrasive nature threatens Justine’s isolated demeanor and on a night of sisterly bonding, Justine accidentally cuts off Alexia’s finger and consumes it while a passed-out Alexia bleeds out. That is until Alexia awakens in utter horror at her own sister chowing down on her finger like a piece of pork rib.

Raw-Movie-2

Justine’s grisly eating habits lead to a switch in heavy meat-eating (cooked and raw) with a ravenous and insatiable hunger that distracts her from school, her growing friendship/relationship with Adrien and fellow classmates, and her overall health and wellness. She even has sex with Adrien to distract herself from her strengthening appetite, nearly rips a hole in his neck, and bites herself when climaxing. Having realized from the moment Justine ate her finger that they share the same condition, Alexia takes her sister on a devastating whirl spin, attacking a bypassing car, killing the injured person inside, eating his brains from his cracked skull, even offering her sister a piece of fresh brain with disturbing ease. She attempts to mentor Justine saying that this is how they have to live now: with manipulation and sly quickness.

Justine’s condition worsens as her bloodthirst becomes a violent obsession and plot to attack someone, as raw meat can only take a zombie vampire hybrid so far. It all comes to a head when a night of party turns into a graphic torment where an intoxicated and sickly looking Justine tries to bite a corpse with Alexia leading to the bullying gathered by dozens of other students recording the incident. When Adrien shows Justine the demented video, she attacks her sister. A fight stemming from pent-up rage, guilt, and hunger clashing between sisters shifts into a straight-up awkward feeding session with the girls biting each other and feeding, all under the eyes of their creeped-out classmates. To go further, Alexia tries to seduce Adrien and ends up killing him with a sports stick, leaving Justine to awaken to blood dripping and the near fully consumed body of her boyfriend.

Talk about the ultimate betrayal, the sisters’ tale only worsens when Alexia’s imprisoned and Justine’s left to be back home with her parents. In an attempt to restabilize some inkling of normalcy during an early dinner, Justine’s father does what he can to comfort her after some tension with her mother, telling her that she nor Alexia are to blame for their actions or their hunger. He unbuttons his shirt to reveal his profusely bitten and scarred torso, which he explains is a result of the girls’ mother having the same zombie-vampire hybrid condition.

Raw-Movie

Raw produced a captivating and stomach-churning body horror unlike any other film in recent years. Blending a story of youth with an undiscussed family history of barely tamed inhumanness, all while using a veterinary college as the setting opened the door for some distinctive visual commentary on animal rights and abuses, mass production of first world countries food supply farms and sources, and even the fall from the grace of youth. The ending stuns Justine and viewers alike, sparking a desperate craving for a follow-up film. But what remains even more striking is the subtly slipped-in cross image of the sisters’ mother, seen when Justine talks to Alexia from behind the visitor’s glass window of a prison. The glare and reflections of both the girls’ faces neatly align to evoke an image of their mother, who’s only seen in the film a handful of times. It’s implied that this image is just a simple lead-up to the father’s big truth bomb, but it can be argued that the girls’ mother needs to be looked at twice to really get the complexities of the intertwined grotesque flesh-devouring and family divide.

Earlier in the film, Alexia, Justine, and their peers confer on animal rights such as the scene where they argue if a monkey sexual assault and human sexual assault should be considered at the same level of violation, accounting for the emotional toll it would take on either human or monkey. Justine takes the stance that tolerance of pain and emotional strife should equally be regarded when considering animals and their behaviors. Scenes of running horses, gut cleaning cows, and cadavers emphasize the observations of behaviors and physical structures of both animals and humans alike. Adding another layer to the conversation, scenes like Justine and Adrien eating greasy food at a truck stop with local sex workers call to the idea of unshakeable human vices and the natural inclination of sex amongst humans. The film pairs and contrasts these images and moments as a means to reflect how closely tied human's animal behaviors are in actuality to select animal behavioral languages.

Raw-Movie-3

In the final moments of the film, the melded image of Alexia and Justine depicts the girls embodying the pressures of maintaining academic success, obscuring their irresistible urge for blood and blurring the lines of their morality. Alexia must’ve experienced the shock and torture of resisting and caving into fleshy desires long before Justine's cringy dance with blood. And in the end, their father looks to Justine to put an end to their secret family horror when he exposes his abdomen. It’s alarming how the mother even manipulated him into such a debilitating position, relying on his body as a food supply and slowly killing him. His pleading now places Justine as the new daughter with a chance of either fulfilling her mother’s new hopes or being her family’s savior. Yet, how can one end this generational curse without a thorough knowledge of what they are and how they could co-exist without harming/killing others?

As an audience, we're left conflicted on feeling empathy for Alexia's crimes, and uncertainty of what Justine could do to hide or foster her inherited condition. The ending of Raw entertains philosophies that the students discuss earlier in the film. Acknowledging that there's an explicit and unchangeable hierarchy that humans have installed as our primary societal and behaviors formats clashes with circumstances like that of Justine and Alexia. The film continually tests the notion of what happens when the boundaries of humanness conflate with limitless animality. Would Justine, Alexia, and their mother be afforded all of their human rights if exposed for being brute flesh-eaters? Most definitely not.

The human condition relies on instinctual fear for survival and utilizes social ostracization as a means to gatekeep the desired from the undesirables. Alexia, Justine, and their mother all fall prey to this category of isolation. What cements this idea of blurred morality lines shows evident in the hereditary condition and behaviors of the girls. Their condition, so distinctive, so deeply ingrained, so irresistible as it completely distracted them from maintaining composure and stripped them of a moral compass, also gripped the girls in tormenting ways that put them more in touch with their human animality.

Often times as a society, we forget that we as human beings are simply animals. We may be slightly more intelligent than most species, but still- we're animals. Raw surfaces the idea that circumstances can instantly muddle these principles as Mother Nature is merciless in her chaotic maintenance of human and animal worlds.

raw south movie review

By Jeannette Catsoulis

  • March 9, 2017

“Raw,” Julia Ducournau’s jangly opera of sexual and dietary awakening, is an exceptionally classy-looking movie about deeply horrifying behavior. Infusing each scene with a cold, unwelcoming beauty, the Belgian cinematographer Ruben Impens makes his camera complicit in the trashy goings-on. Sneaking beneath bedsheets and sliding over young flesh, his lens takes us places we may not want to go.

Unfolding during rush week in a nightmarish veterinary school, where freshmen are relentlessly hazed, and every night is a bacchanal, the movie clings nervously to the virginal Justine (Garance Marillier). A jumpy faun in a concrete jungle, Justine is a legacy student and lifelong vegetarian. So when a hazing ritual requires her to swallow raw offal, the angry crimson rash that flares on her body seems a physical manifestation of her extreme disgust.

That repulsion is soon replaced by a craving that will drive Justine closer to her sister and fellow student (Ella Rumpf, terrific) and further from her classmates. Her transformation suffuses the film with animalistic energy — like a cat, she chews on her hair, then vomits it up — and her isolation produces a melancholy that permeates even her erotic encounters, where the connection between sex and sustenance is presented with nerve-twanging literalness.

Like Jorge Michel Grau’s social-decay fable, “We Are What We Are,” “Raw” is an astonishingly bold debut feature that embeds cannibalism in a framework of environmental chaos and familial dysfunction. There’s no love here, and no comfort; yet the movie’s genius is to make us feel for Justine. Ultimately, she’s just a scared teenager with the world’s worst eating disorder.

Rated R for body-eating, buckets of blood and a spectacularly botched Brazilian wax. In French, with English subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 38 minutes.

Now streaming on:

On International Women’s Day, it seems only fitting to write a review of “Raw,” a horror film about a brilliant but innocent teenage girl who finally lets loose and asserts her true identity as a cannibal.

It may not sound like it on the surface, but “Raw” is absolutely a celebration of female power—of realizing who you are, what you want and how to go after it, albeit with brutally bloody results. And it comes from the mind of another young, brilliant woman, French writer/director Julia Ducournau , making her wildly assured feature debut.

Ducournau’s lurid, vivid film is visually striking, full of images that will shock you while others will lull you with a hypnotic beauty. And though it has glimmers of style that are reminiscent of thriller masters—the body horror of David Cronenberg , the gaudy surrealism of David Lynch —“Raw” is very much its own artful entity with its own singular voice.

“Raw” will make you curl up in a ball in your seat, daring to watch through splayed fingers—and not necessarily in response to the film’s violence. Ducournau pinpoints and expertly depicts the frights that exist in the everyday world—especially when you’re a young woman trying to figure out your place within it. That’s what’s so startling about the film: It’s not necessarily the monstrous moments that’ll shake you up, but rather the mundane ones.

Having said that, it’s exciting to see a female filmmaker establishing herself so forcefully in what traditionally has been a male-dominated genre. And she’s only 33 years old. (The recent “ XX ,” which consisted of four horror shorts by and about women, also entered this territory, but with frustratingly inconsistent results.) Ducournau mixes it up visually with a combination of eerily austere establishing shots and long, fluid camera movements. She knows when to hold back to create suspense and when to unleash the full fury of her grisly imagery.

With the help of cinematographer Ruben Impens ’ beautifully nightmarish use of color and light and Jim Williams’ chilling score, Ducournau creates a lingering sense of mystery throughout: How much of this is a hallucination? Could what we’re watching possibly be real?

“Raw” begins on a note of understated tension as 16-year-old Justine ( Garance Marillier with a thrilling, daring performance in her first major role) travels to veterinary school with her parents, where they both studied and where her brash older sister, Alexia ( Ella Rumpf ), is currently a student. This is a prestigious institution, but the campus itself is especially bleak and unwelcoming; during the rare instances when these aspiring doctors get to go outside, the skies always seem to be cloudy. It’s an unusual and unsettling location for a film.

Everyone in Justine’s family is not only a veterinarian but also a strict vegetarian, a lifestyle choice she finds difficult to adhere to when confronted with a series of raucous and sadistic freshman hazing rituals. In one of them, the older students force her and her classmates each to eat a small piece of raw rabbit kidney. She’s initially resistant and repulsed, as anyone would be. But soon enough, she finds that the tiny nibble of animal flesh stirs something primal in her—a hunger she never realized was there. In no time, Justine is sitting in front of the refrigerator in her dorm room in the middle of the night, tearing into a raw chicken breast to the bewilderment of her flirty, gay roommate and only friend, Adrien ( Rabah Nait Oufella ). The look in her eyes lets us know that this won’t be nearly enough to satisfy her.

Ducournau cleverly takes her time in these moments as she slowly reveals each shocking step in Justine’s carnivorous evolution. She never judges this character, even as her choices have increasingly harmful consequences. Rather, she seems fascinated by Justine, watching both from afar and up close as she morphs from shy little girl to sly huntress.

Clearly, the physical seizing of flesh is a metaphor for a sexual awakening, but the transformation Justine undergoes in “Raw” could be interpreted in a variety of ways. Justine is a little awkward as she gets gussied up, goes to parties and flirts with boys. An attempt at bikini waxing goes horribly wrong in the film’s most squirm-inducing scene. She clearly has no idea what she’s doing, and that insecurity gives her character—and the film as a whole—an unexpected element of relatability.

But as Justine gives into her yearnings in a way that’s drastically opposed to the philosophy under which she was raised, she becomes more brazen, yet also more confident and powerful in her femininity. Somewhere, beneath the blood, she might even be happy—entranced by her newfound lust for life. It’s like a drug. And it’s clearly habit-forming.

raw south movie review

Review: South

South , by writer and director Gerard Walsh, is a raw study of the power of relationships and finding one’s place in the world. A slow and contemplative film, it charts the journey of Tom, a lonely young man who decides to travel across Ireland in search of family, after experiencing a tragedy and realising he needs to take back some control of his life.

Dotted with odd encounters, Tom’s journey is far from straightforward, and characters skirt the boundaries of the film, dropping in and disappearing again as quickly, each one playing some part in shaping Tom as he makes his way towards Dublin, but none of them having any real lasting impact on where he ends up, both figuratively and literally.

Tom, played by Darragh O’ Toole, must learn to confront all manner of demons as he battles with grief and tries to understand his place in the world. He comes to realise his relationship with his dad (Joe Rooney) has been a crutch too heavily relied on, and that if he is to cope with loss, he must confront the feelings that have held him back in life and push past the limitations they impose on him.

O’ Toole is very good in a challenging role that sees him shoulder the film largely alone and strike a delicate balance between endearing, vulnerable and hurt. By the time he encounters Jess (Emily Lamey), he is at a breaking point of sorts and their blossoming friendship provides some much needed levity and lightness to the story. South meanders along from one brief and strange rendezvous to the next and paints a picture of rural Ireland that is too aggrandized to be taken seriously; a caricature rather than a realistic representation.

While Jess is one of these oddball characters he meets along the way, she is a welcome addition as their chemistry goes on to inject some life and vitality into an overly grim and depressing trek across country. By the time he meets her he has been beaten and robbed, booed off stage and almost molested, and her introduction to the tale rescues the story from a somewhat unnecessary darkness. Their relationship is brimming with awkward charm and warmth right from the off and a natural chemistry that helps carry the story along and transcends a script that needs a lot of polish.

Sadly there is another issue that can’t be overlooked; a soundtrack that at times intrudes on dialogue, working against the intuitive flow of the film. It is an issue that creeps in at times and needs some tighter editing to remedy, especially when music is such a core component of the movie.

South is mixed bag of a film that won’t be to everyone’s taste. Lacking the emotional punch that a story as introverted as this needs, it’s hampered by a screenplay that never really fires on all cylinders. Where it does succeed though is in the pairing of Darragh O’Toole and Emily Lamey who are a joy to watch together and who rescue Tom’s journey from bleakness to make it a little more endearing.

Review: Is ‘Longlegs’ all we expected and more... or less?

Audiences react to a highly anticipated horror blockbuster.

Wade Lockwood , WDIV

“Longlegs” is a new horror film starring Maika Monroe, Nicholas Cage, and Blair Underwood. While it was regarded as one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, this retrospective will discuss several aspects of its reception. From where the film went right, where it might’ve lost audiences at points, and where it perhaps could’ve gone farther, this horror flick did one thing for certain: created plenty of discourse.

Potential spoilers ahead

Recommended Videos

Some elements of the film were completed with absolute mastery, such as Andres Arochi’s cinematography, as well as the acting by the central cast, notably Nicholas Cage, who disappears into his role as the main villain, Longlegs. Another feature that was truly beautiful about the movie were the stylistic choices, flipping from a 1.33:1 aspect ratio to the ultra-wide 2.39:1 to communicate past and present, as well as intense color schemes in certain moments that offer stark juxtaposition with the rather dreary color palette throughout most of the film.

If every element of the movie was done with this level of creativity and perfection, this would without a doubt be a contender for horror film of the decade. But alas, there were clear issues with the film that has seemingly turned the film from “great” to “good” for some.

Many of these issues branch from the fact that the film doesn’t seem to want to be too much of its own thing. Through story beats, all-too-familiar horror tropes, somewhat underwhelming scares, and imagery that doesn’t carry as much weight as it could, the film unnecessarily downgrades itself. Where highly acclaimed horror movies like “Hereditary” and “Get Out” succeed with their excellent use of subtlety to slowly clue the audience in to the horrors behind the initial plot, “Longlegs” seems like it wants the audience to know exactly what’s going on at every moment.

This lack of uncertainty makes the horror aspect fall flatter than it could, because the audience is given no time to imagine the terror that might actually be afoot, and is then underwhelmed by what the film “reveals” to us. But do these issues ruin the film? Absolutely not. The reason these problems are so apparent is likely due to anticipation, because the bar was set so high.

So what exactly is the general reaction to this film? With an average of 3.5/5 stars on Letterboxed, a critic rating of 86% and audience rating of 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.2/10 on IMDB, it is quite clear that audiences feel this movie was (drumroll please): Good. It could’ve been great, it could’ve totally flopped, but it stayed in the green for most audience members and many would argue that it would be worth the watch.

While I stand by the critiques in the paragraphs above, I do agree that there are too many creative aspects and fun ideas thrown in for this movie to go completely ignored by anybody. If you’re looking for a fun, spooky horror with some decent, hard hitting moments to put you on the edge of your seat for an hour and forty minutes, this movie will suit you perfectly.

Overall, I’m grateful for a fun, decent summer scare, and although not everything worked to a tee, the movie succeeds at pulling off a good story with some truly captivating elements.

Denzel Curry’s King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2 Is A Welcome Break From Prestige Rap

raw south movie review

Giovanni Mourin

In an age where rap icons are either literally pissing on their Grammy trophies or using their own victory speeches to figuratively shit on them, Denzel Curry stands out as one of the few young spitters who’d actually love to have one. From the beginning of his career, he’s showcased a knack for engrossing aesthetics and an affinity for ostensibly challenging big-picture concepts — a constellation of highbrow connotations usually needed for clueless awards show committees to treat rap like a legitimate art form. By his own account, these are the folks Curry has always looked to impress. “I tell my fans all the time: I’m not doing this just to do it, I wanna win a Grammy off this hoe,” he told Miami New Times two years ago. “But it feel like I don’t get recognized for what I do, even though I’ve been doing this for a long time.”

Good as it was, Melt My Eyez See Your Future didn’t win a golden Gramophone, and his latest effort, King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2 , won’t either. The difference is, for his latest, it doesn’t even sound like he’s trying for that kind of validation. Freed from the weight of impressing people who don’t understand your art anyway, King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2 supplies its own brand of low-stakes thrills for a project that’s more fun than it is meticulous. A sequel to his 2012 effort King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 1 (Underground Tape 1996) , it’s raw, yet deceptively well-sequenced; it’s a mixtape that sees Curry let loose in the best way possible.

The project is coated with retro samples fit for an early Three 6 Mafia cassette. It evokes all the throwback, lofi grandeur of ’90s and 2000s Memphis rap. It’s an aesthetic SpaceGhostPurrp, Curry, and the Raider Klan adopted in the early 2010s, which in turn inspired A$AP Mob and others to do the same. For his part, Curry’s latest rendition is more polished. The vocals for the first Mischievous South were muffled, and you could practically hear the lack of a pop filter. The new one is still lofi, but everything is cleaner, which when combined with Curry’s immeasurably improved skill set, makes it easily superior to the OG.

At its best, Vol. 2 harnesses Three 6’s phonk energy for tracks that feel genuinely propulsive. Teaming up with That Mexican OT for “Black Flag Freestyle,” Curry slides across a sinister Memphis synth line with a deliberate flow and casual menace. On his end of things, OT supplies the line of the song: “This Draco built like Bushwick Bill.” When meshed with an acrobatic Mexican OT verse and a symbolic hook, it’s a cut that brims with all the kineticism of a classic Three 6 offering. It’s Mad Max theme music.

With a mix of blown-out bass, ornately aqueous strings, and a simple, confrontational hook, “Gz Up” is a vintage Curry cut that merges raw feeling with verbal athleticism. 2 Chainz matches Curry’s tenacity with his customarily off-kilter punchlines, while Curry’s fellow Floridian imbues the track with dismissive cool. Curry maintains the energy with “Sked,” a Project Pat-assisted single that pulsates with aggression and another surprisingly irresistible refrain. As part of a run that began with “Black Flag Freestyle,” the entire section brims with electricity — of the pummeling beats, the verses and the people rapping them. Stretched over five tracks, it creates a skipless vortex of sound; an apocalyptic joyride designed for night rides following hours of Miami debauchery. If these tracks represent the turn up, the successive two embody the blissful daze of a swanky afterparty, with Curry’s frenzied vocals fading into a dreamy interlude coated in lush piano, reedy strings and faded Curry slick talk. It’s a perfectly disembodied segue into the “Cole Pimp,” an effortlessly smooth mid-tempo slow jam featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Juicy J.

While the middle to end of Vol. 2 is generally strong, tracks like the Ski Mask The Slump God team-up “Hit The Floor” can hit as a bit undercooked; the hook sounds like it was totally freestyled. Then there are also some writing lapses from Curry himself. His more ferocious bars often lack the specificity that make the best street raps. The flavorless threats seem mundane when compared against the likes of 2 Chainz and That Mexican OT, even if he usually makes up for it with conviction. That lack of specificity is a double-edged blade for a rapper straying away from his typically personal bars for raw machismo; the lack of imagination doesn’t always fill in the empty spaces. Then again, the well-sequenced production, along with his guest spots, usually do.

As a project, Vol. 2 gives the impression of nostalgia and contentment. Speaking with the Recording Academy for a recent interview, Curry cast aside concerns about things like acclaim or trivial album rankings — at least, when it comes to Vol. 2 .

“I didn’t think about where I’d rank this. We had a whole decade of producing great records, and people look forward to the album experience more than the single when it comes to me,” he explained. “This is what it is, and I just want people to enjoy it. It’s not something to put too much effort or thought into. It’s something you can bump into the club, or you could go to a show and turn up to it. That’s where I’m at with it.” Pretty much me too.

Vol. 2 isn’t a bold statement of purpose like Zuu , Ta13oo , or even Imperial . Instead, it’s a return to a sound and an era that predated any of his thoughts about stream accounts, Grammys, and critical acclaim. Rendered with conviction and a respect for its influences, King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2 is proof that, trophy or not, dope shit is its own reward.

COLD AS ICE

Mustard - "parking lot" (feat. travis scott).

If you didn’t think Mustard was going to make the most of his Kendrick Lamar moment, I don’t know what to tell you. With an album on the way, Mustard capitalized on the buzz by dropping “Parking Lot,” a Travis Scott-assisted anthem that’s perfect for late-night cruises and generally making you feel much cooler than you are.

Drakeo The Ruler - "Scoreboard"

Drakeo The Ruler might be gone, but his impact on the Los Angeles rap scene is immutable — just check out Kendrick’s “Not Like Us” if you need a reminder. A newer one, though, is “Scoreboard,” a perfectly quotable exercise in muted menace and dismissive swagger.

Common & Pete Rock - "Fortunate"

Common & Pete Rock gave fans a lot to be thankful for with The Auditorium Vol. 1 , and one of those items is “Fortunate,” a celestially soulful cut from the project. Here, Common basically says his grace with unfailing grace as he reflects on all he’s got. I’m fortunate these two decided to link up on the album and I got to see them perform in BK last weekend.

Veeze - "Fucked A Fan” (Feat. Rylo Rodriguez)

Two masters of murmured flows team up for “Fucked A Fan,” an exercise in both subtle control and, of course, their customarily effortless cool.

Lupe Fiasco - "Palaces”

For “Palaces,” Lupe deftly explores the costs of fame, floating across a lofi soundscape that would fit right in with Samurai Champloo . His new album Samurai is brief, but it’s dense with imagery and peerless rhyme technique — qualities inextricably tied to the Windy City’s finest.

Mavi - "I’m So Tired”

“I’m So Tired” is Mavi at his meditative best. Here, he unspools troubling thoughts with tidy rhyme schemes and a disembodied soundscape. It sounds as if he’s unraveling and snowballing his observations at the same time, creating a tense reflection that reflects the care, craft, and real-time feeling of the person who created it.

Eminem - "Tobey” (Feat. Big Sean & BabyTron)

Look. I’ve generally lost faith in Eminem. But being a music critic isn’t about staying in some sort of cranky character mode or demonstrating my objectivity by shitting on one of my heroes. No. I generally want Em to do well, and he does just that on “Tobey,” perhaps the best cut from his new LP. Em’s verbal acrobatics remain killer, but he might have actually been outrapped by Big Sean and Babytron. No shame in that, though. But there’s plenty of shame to be had regarding The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) .

Ice Spice - “Did It First” (Feat. Central Cee)

It’s okay to admit Ice Spice’s “Gimmie A Light” didn’t hit. Especially when she’s bounced back with “Did It First,” a playfully petty new single about the proverbial romantic getback. Here, Ice and Central Cee skitter across a slipper club beat for a barrage of flexes and a hook that, like the best Ice Spice offerings, is destined to become an Instagram caption.

Don Toliver - “Brother Stone” (Feat. Kodak Black)

“Brother Stone” is an exhibition for sleek, nocturnal cool, with both Don Toliver and Kodak Black showcasing their knack for melodic flows you can never escape.

42 Dugg - “N.P.O.” (Feat. Sexyy Red)

I didn’t need to listen to this song to realize I’d love it. With her knack for unabashed ratchetness, Sexyy Red was essentially born to be on a song about not having panties on, and Dugg’s more playful side blends in with all the jovial nonsense in the best way.

GloRilla - “TGIF”

Man. What a difference a year can make. In 2023, GloRilla looked like an artist who missed their window, with her extremely mid BK drill song playing out like a desperate hail mary. And yet, she bounced back with “Yeah Glo!” earlier this year. Now, she’s got another one with “TGIF,” an authoritative, boss woman anthem designed to make you turn up with your girls.

Drake getting hit with all sorts of plagues like he’s Pharaoh. Locusts up next. https://t.co/vdduRR5Irz — Mbadawe (@LazarusKumi) July 17, 2024

Release Date: 26 Jul, 2024

'Raayan' is a special milestone in Dhanush's career. It marks his 50th film as an actor and his second film as a director (after 'Pa Paandi'). For his 50th film, he donned the hat of a director, actor and writer. Has he exceeded the second time as a filmmaker with 'Raayan'? Let's find out!

Kathavarayan aka Raayan is forced to take care of his two brothers and toddler sister after their parents vanish for two days. This marks the beginning of Raayan’s struggle. His motto is to survive in this cruel world. He fears no one, not even death. Raayan, along with his siblings, escape grave danger from their village and land in North Madras, where they find a home.

Years later, Muthu (Sundeep Kishan) is an alcoholic, hot-headed wastrel in the locality, while Manickam (Kalidas Jayaram) is a college-going younger brother. Durga (a feisty Dushara Vijayan) is the darling of the house, with unconditional love for her elder brother, Raayan. He is a father figure and is wary of his limitations and the repercussions of his anger. He cautions Muthu not to fall into the suzhal (vortex in English). But, Muthu's alcoholic nature lands the Raayan family in trouble and claims life after life.

Dhanush is an above-par performer is a known fact to everyone. With his directorial debut, 'Pa Paandi', he proved himself with a family drama. In 'Raayan', this family drama turns into a gripping revenge thriller that exposes the gangster culture. Much like Vetri Maaran's 'Asuran', we know that Raayan is a menacing man, but he doesn't let his anger consume him or unleash the beast in him. For him, leading a peaceful life is paramount, and and he is willing to go to great lengths to achieve it.

'Raayan' is yet another case of two different halves. While the first half is all about establishing Raayan and his siblings, the second half is about revenge and only revenge. The first half also introduces gangsters Sethu (SJ Suryah), Durai (Saravanan) and a police officer (Prakash Raj) and how their interpersonal relationships influence the story.

Dhanush's 50th film is a simple revenge story. The interval block shows streaks of brilliance of his directorial skills. However, as a writer, 'Raayan' lacks emotional depth. For the revenge angle to work, emotions matter. Despite having multiple twists and turns, the pay-off moments do not affect them as were intended. The second half has many unsolved questions, which are dealt with on the surface. For example, you never get a convincing explanation of why Manickam takes the drastic decision in the second half. It is where the film falls short of being a perfect revenge thriller.

That said, Dhanush makes up for his acting. Similarly, Kalidas and Sundeep Kishan have meaty roles and have lived up to them. Dushara Vijayan gets an exciting role and she excels. Prakash Raj, Selvaraghavan and SJ Suryah's performances make things interesting.

'Raayan' is the latest addition to the list of movies that normalises police encounter killings and them taking illegal routes defying the system to end gangster culture.

Dhanush's 50th film is visually spectacular. The silhouette shots, interval block and the climax fight look brilliant, thanks to the cinematography by Om Prakash. If Dhanush is one of the pillars of 'Raayan', AR Rahman is another pillar, who shoulders the film. His background score and songs are perfect for it.

'Raayan' is a riveting thriller. Well, almost. 2.5 out of 5 stars of 'Raayan'. Published By: K Janani Published On: Jul 26, 2024 ALSO READ | Dhanush called out for story behind his Poes Garden residence. Here's why

WWE Ratings Up Heading Into SummerSlam, ‘Raw’ Rises 9%

Meanwhile, “SmackDown” is up 17% in the key 18-49 demographic compared to the third quarter of last year

Four wrestlers with medium-toned skin stand in a wrestling ring, each holding up their arms lifting one finger, as a crowd in the background watches, with many of those watching also raising their fingers in the air.

World Wrestling Entertainment has been on a hot streak , with WWE grabbing headlines heading into its signature WrestleMania event earlier this year with an ongoing storyline featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson making a months-long comeback. While Johnson’s been off the board since shortly after Mania, leaving to film ultimate fighting biopic “The Smashing Machine” before an expected return leading into next year’s WrestleMania, flagship show “WWE Raw” on USA is up 9% so far this quarter in the key 18-49 demographic versus 2023, according to Nielsen ratings figures.

Meanwhile, WWE’s “SmackDown” on Fox is up an impressive 17% vs. its 2023 third quarter average. “Raw” tallied an average of 776,000 viewers in 18-49 so far this quarter as “SmackDown” drew 886,000 viewers in the demo.

The promotion holds its “SummerSlam” premium event this weekend on NBCUniversal’s Peacock. Its business continues to expand with a Netflix deal set to kick off at the beginning of next year, though WWE’s premium events will continue to stream on Peacock domestically until 2026.

Over the first half of the year, “Raw” was up 4% compared with 2023, drawing 745,000 viewers in the 18-49 demo. “SmackDown’s” 18-49 rating rose by nearly 10% compared with 2023, drawing an average 862,000 viewers in the demo.

raw south movie review

Top storylines heading into SummerSlam include Solo Sikoa challenging for Cody Rhodes’ WWE Championship as an extension of the Bloodline feud involving The Rock that drove this year’s WrestleMania, a returning-from-injury Rhea Ripley challenging Liv Morgan for the Women’s World Championship in a feud involving both vying for the affections of Dominik Mysterio and CM Punk in a grudge match against Drew McIntyre in a social media-driven rivalry, with Seth Rollins as the special referee.

WWE’s developmental NXT brand has flown under the radar at times, but it was also up in the first half of 2024 by a striking 26% in 18-49 viewers compared with the first half of 2023, pulling in an average of 252,000 viewers in the demographic. Several of its top wrestlers have moved to their “Raw” and “SmackDown” brands recently, with some of the main roster stars continuing to make special appearances on NXT.

They’ve also drawn buzz for crossing over with the TNA Wrestling brand, bringing in wrestlers from the rival group such as Jordynne Grace and Joe Hendry for appearances on NXT and sending WWE talent to TNA in return.

The working agreement is a rarity in the pro wrestling world, especially as WWE remains locked in a promotional war against their No. 2 opposition All Elite Wrestling. That rivalry has appeared to be particularly fierce with its flagship “AEW Dynamite” program.

AEW has been looking to close a new TV rights deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, which could help set the stage for the next phase of their competition with WWE. “Raw” will be leaving its longtime USA Network home for the streaming world in January 2025, while the game of television musical chairs sends “SmackDown” from Fox to USA this October as “NXT” leaves USA for The CW. WWE will retain a foothold in broadcast and cable, while also expanding its streaming imprint.

“Raw” and “SmackDown” frequently top their respective ratings world, with “Raw” ranked No. 1 on cable 17 times in the first half of 2024 and “Smackdown” on top across broadcast and cable 12 times in the same period.
