Stephen Kemmis is Professor of Education and a member of the Research Institute for Professional Practice, Learning and Education at Charles Sturt University (Faculty of Education, Wagga Wagga). He is also co-leader of the ‘Pedagogy, Education and Praxis’ (PEP) international collaboration involving researchers from universities in Europe and Canada. Stephen has held academic positions at the University of Sydney, University of Illinois, University of East Anglia, Deakin University and the University of Ballarat and also worked for several years as an independent consultant. He has published extensively on professional practice, indigenous education, participatory action research and qualitative methods in educational research. His most well-known publication is the highly acclaimed book (with Wilfred Carr) "Becoming Critical: Education, knowledge and action research". In 2001 Stephen was made an Honorary Life Member of the Australian Association for Educational Research (AARE), and in 2009 he was awarded two honorary doctorates for services to international educational research.

Robin McTaggart is Adjunct Professor at the Griffith Institute for Educational Research at Griffith University, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. He was formerly Professor and Head of School of  Administration and Curriculum Studies at Deakin University, Geelong, Australia, and Dean of Education and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Quality Assurance at James Cook University, Townsville, Australia. He was also Adjunct Professor in the International Graduate School of Management PhD program at the University of South Australia for several years. He has practised, taught and published extensively about critical participatory action research in many countries including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Canada and the USA.

Rhonda Nixon is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta, Alberta, Canada and currently works at Edmonton CatholicSchools.  She has fifteen years of experience as a former elementary, junior and secondary teacher and English Language Arts Consultant for a large urban school district. She is currently supporting schools in critical participatory action research as an approach to professional learning in her role as Manager of Edmonton Catholic Schools’ TRANSFORM professional development programs. Her 2012 PhD thesis, from the University of Alberta, Investigating tension in collaborative action research about comics writing, reported on a critical participatory action research program undertaken with elementary school teachers investigating the power of comics writing as a way to teach narrative writing.

Abstract This review of recent action research books covers the period from about mid-2004 to mid-2006, complementing an earlier review (Dick, 2004). After noting some important recent additions to the action research literature, I address the literature on several different applications of action research including education, community, participatory development, and organizations. There are briefer sections on other topics. Action research journals and special issues of other journals are also identified.

This Chapter has four sections. The first introduces the concept of participatory action research, relating it to similar research approaches: participatory research, critical action research, classroom action research, action learning, action science, soft systems approaches, and industrial action research. The second section, "Research and Social Practice", argues that participatory action research has emerged from a significant shift of perspective in social and educational research towards research which aims to avoid privileging the perspectives of professional researchers in favour of the perspectives of the ordinary participants in social settings. The section focuses on the notion of practice-since, through participatory action research, participants aim to change the practices through which they conduct their social lives, themselves as practitioners, and the settings in which they practise. The section also presents a taxonomy of traditions of the study of practice, taking the view that participatory action research encompasses a variety of these traditions. It is argued that research itself is a social practice, and the kinds of presuppositions made by different approaches to social research are revealed in their preferences for different kinds of research methods. The third section concerns "Participatory Action Research as Practice". It explores differences between approaches to the study of practice in terms of the different kinds of social relationships embodied in the research act: "third-person" (instrumental), "second-person" (practical) and "firstperson" (critical) relationships between the researcher and the researched. Participatory action research involves "first-person" relationships in which researcher and researched are the same people. It is suggested that there may be a possibility of reconciling different traditions in the study of practice through adopting a more encompassing view of the nature of practice (drawing on Habermas's theory of communicative action). The fourth section offers a brief overview of some key features of participatory action research as we see it. It concludes by suggesting that participatory action research offers a way to explore practice drawing on all of the five aspects of practice outlined earlier in the Chapter.

Action Research

In this, the third in a series of two-yearly reviews (see also Dick, 2004, and Dick, 2006), I identify some of the action research literature that has appeared in books and edited collections over approximately the past two years. After an overview of the general action research literature I gather together other relevant literature under the following headings: action learning; community-based participatory research; youth work; educational action research; appreciative inquiry; and action science. I conclude the review with a very brief look at action research journals and special issues, other literature of interest, and an attempt to divine present and emergent trends.

Participatory action research involves “reaching out” from the specifics of particular situations, as understood by the people within them, to explore the potential of different perspectives, theories, and discourses that might help to illuminate particular practices and practical settings as a basis for developing critical insights and ideas about how things might be transformed. Equally, it involves “reaching in” from the standpoints provided by different perspectives, theories, and discourses to explore the extent to which they provide practitioners themselves with a critical grasp of the problems and issues they actually confront in specific local situations. In the end, both the researcher and the participants collaborate to bring about a change in the social reality of the researched.

Lord Darzi's report on the NHS shows why we must make dementia a priority

Lord Ara Darzi’s review of the NHS highlights why the UK government needs to act now and invest in dementia diagnosis, care and research.

Mark MacDonald, our Associate Director of Evidence, Policy and Influencing, has responded to the publication of Lord Ara Darzi's report on the NHS and what it may mean for dementia services.

Mark said: "This report paints a worrying picture, yet one which has been clear for some time: the NHS is broken and people affected by dementia are too often going without the care, support and the critical diagnosis they need. 

Dementia is truly a whole system challenge, demanding a whole system approach. Yet, as Lord Darzi has concluded, that system isn’t yet up to the challenge.   

"We see the unrelenting impact these failings have on people with dementia every day. Almost a million people live with dementia yet one in three aren’t getting diagnosed at all, and there is huge variation in access to services. 

"As the Darzi report points out, dementia presents an important challenge, particularly as our population ages. 

"It places enormous pressure and cost on the NHS and without significant changes, those will get much worse. 

It is critical that the NHS is capable of diagnosing, treating and caring for people living with dementia now and into the future.   

"We are calling on the government to act and make dementia the priority it should be and invest in dementia diagnosis, care and research .

What is lecanemab?

Lecanemab (also known as Leqembi) has made headlines as the first drug ever approved in the UK by the MHRA that can slow down early-stage Alzheimer’s disease but it has not been recommended for use in the NHS at this stage. Here is what we know so far about this breakthrough Alzheimer's drug.

The MHRA have approved lecanemab for some people with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. However NICE does not recommend use on the NHS for any patients.
