Essay on Success

The concept of success is very simple; if you invest your time wisely and work hard, you will achieve success in no time. But success is not as simple as it sounds; what might sound like success to one might not be the same for another person. It embodies the realization of one’s goals, aspirations, and desires, often accompanied by a sense of accomplishment and fulfilment.

Success is manifested in different aspects, such as career achievements, personal growth, or even the pursuit of happiness. It is a journey filled with determination, perseverance, and often a willingness to learn from both triumphs and setbacks. Ultimately, success is a subjective pursuit that reflects the unique path and definition of achievement for each person.

Being successful is very subjective and can vary from person to person. Therefore, here are some common factors which contribute to the success of a person.

  • Hard Work and Persistence: Success requires effort and dedication and one has the ability to face challenges.
  • Setting Clear Goals: It is very important for one to have specific and attainable goals which will provide direction and motivation.
  • Networking: The person should have the capability to build relations and at the same time be open to opportunities which strike.
  • Time Management: Managing time effectively and priorities is essential for productivity and progress.
  • Self-Discipline: One should be very focused and maintain self-control which will help them achieve long-term goals.
  • Management of Finances: Having a basic understanding of finances and managing them wisely is also very important for attaining financial success.

Success is the culmination of dedication, hard work, and determination. It is not merely the achievement of material wealth, but the fulfilment of one’s goals and aspirations. Success varies from person to person; for some, it’s a thriving career, while for others, it could be having a harmonious family life.

To attain success, individuals must set clear objectives, persevere through challenges, and learn from failures. Success often involves learning, adapting, and embracing change. It’s the result of resilience and the willingness to keep pushing forward. Ultimately, success is a personal journey, and its definition is unique to each individual.

Everybody wants to be successful in life, but are they willing to put in all their efforts? Success is not solely measured by wealth or fame but by achieving one’s goals and finding fulfilment. True success is often the result of determination, hard work, and resilience. Setting clear, achievable objectives and being persistent through challenges are crucial components.

Education is a common path to success, providing knowledge and skills that open doors to opportunities. Embracing failure as a stepping stone, learning from mistakes, and adapting to change are essential to achieving success. However, it’s important to recognize that success is subjective and can encompass a broader spectrum of achievements beyond material possessions.

Personal growth, happiness, and a sense of purpose are all part of success. Balancing personal and professional life is key to sustaining it. Ultimately, success is a journey, not a destination, and it’s about realizing your full potential and making a meaningful contribution to the world.

Success is a multifaceted concept, often defined by achieving one’s goals and aspirations. It is a subjective and deeply personal notion, as what constitutes success varies from person to person. However, a common thread in success is the continuous pursuit of one’s ambitions, combined with determination and hard work.

Success is not solely measured by material wealth, but rather by the fulfilment and satisfaction that comes from reaching one’s objectives. It is the result of setting clear goals, developing a plan, and facing all the challenges. The road to success is rarely smooth; it is often marked by setbacks and failures. These obstacles are crucial for personal growth, teaching valuable lessons that contribute to success in the long run.

Moreover, success is not an endpoint; it is a continuous journey. It requires adaptability and the willingness to learn and evolve. Success can be found in various aspects of life, from career achievements to personal relationships and self-fulfilment. It is the balance and harmony between these different facets that lead to a truly successful and meaningful life.

In conclusion, success is a complex and individualized concept, rooted in determination, hard work, resilience, and personal growth. It is not defined solely by external markers but by the fulfilment and happiness, one derives from their accomplishments and the journey to achieve them.

Introduction.

A successful person is not defined by wealth alone. Success is about achieving personal goals, being happy, and contributing to society. Let’s explore some qualities of a successful person.

Hard work is crucial. Successful people understand that effort is required to achieve goals. They are not afraid of challenges or failures.

Resilience is another key. Success often comes after numerous failures. Successful people learn from their mistakes and keep trying.

Positive Attitude

A positive attitude helps in overcoming obstacles. Successful people are optimistic and believe in their abilities.

These qualities are essential for success. Cultivate them to achieve your life goals.

250 Words Essay on Qualities of a Successful Person

Success is a subjective term, varying from person to person. However, certain qualities are universally recognized as key indicators of a successful individual. These include resilience, self-awareness, and adaptability among others.

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from failures and setbacks. Successful people are not immune to failures, but they possess the mental fortitude to learn from these experiences and continue forward. They view obstacles not as insurmountable barriers, but as opportunities for growth and learning.

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is another hallmark of success. It involves understanding one’s strengths, weaknesses, emotions, and motivations. Successful people are introspective, continually examining their actions and decisions. This self-awareness allows them to make informed choices, align their actions with their values, and continuously improve themselves.

Adaptability

In a rapidly changing world, adaptability is a crucial trait for success. Successful people are open to new ideas and are able to adjust their strategies and plans to suit changing circumstances. They are not rigid in their thinking or approach, but rather, they embrace change and innovation.

While there are many qualities that can contribute to a person’s success, resilience, self-awareness, and adaptability stand out as particularly important. These qualities enable individuals to navigate the challenges of life, learn from their experiences, and continually adapt to new circumstances. Therefore, cultivating these qualities is a worthwhile endeavor for anyone seeking to achieve success.

500 Words Essay on Qualities of a Successful Person

Success is a multifaceted concept, often defined differently by different people. Some perceive it as financial prosperity, while others view it as achieving personal goals or attaining inner peace. Regardless of the definition, there are certain qualities that successful people universally share. This essay will delve into some of these qualities.

Self-Discipline

One of the most important qualities of a successful person is self-discipline. It is the ability to control one’s impulses, emotions, desires, and behavior. It is what separates the successful from the unsuccessful. Successful people understand the importance of consistency and persistence in their actions. They do not let immediate gratification distract them from their long-term goals.

Resilience is another critical quality. Success is not always a smooth journey; it is often fraught with failures and setbacks. Successful people are those who can withstand these challenges and bounce back stronger. They view failures not as the end but as stepping stones towards success. They learn from their mistakes and use them to improve and grow.

Successful people are invariably passionate about what they do. This passion fuels their drive and determination to succeed. It gives them the energy to put in the hard work and the patience to wait for the results. They love what they do, and this love propels them towards their goals.

Curiosity and Continuous Learning

Successful individuals are inherently curious. They have an insatiable desire to learn and grow. They understand that the world is constantly evolving, and to stay ahead, they must continually update their knowledge and skills. They are open to new ideas and perspectives, and they actively seek opportunities for learning and development.

Integrity is a fundamental quality of successful people. They are honest and ethical in their dealings. They believe in fairness and justice. They uphold their values and principles, even when it is difficult or inconvenient. Their actions are guided by a strong moral compass, and they earn respect and trust through their integrity.

Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

Successful people have high emotional intelligence. They are aware of their emotions and those of others. They can manage their emotions effectively and use them to guide their actions. They are empathetic and understanding, which helps them build strong relationships and networks.

In conclusion, success is not merely about wealth or fame. It is about fulfilling one’s potential and making a positive impact. The qualities of self-discipline, resilience, passion, curiosity, integrity, and emotional intelligence are key to achieving this success. They are not innate but can be developed and nurtured over time. As we strive for success, we should endeavor to cultivate these qualities within ourselves.

7 Qualities of a Successful College Essay

Bonus Material:  30 College Essays That Worked

The college essay is one of the most important aspects of a student’s application.

It gives applicants an opportunity to articulate their personal values, character traits, and perspectives. It’s also a chance to add more value to your application, simply by demonstrating who you are outside of your resume and transcript.

A “successful” college essay is one that makes the most of these opportunities and, in many cases, earns an acceptance.

We’ve demystified what most admissions officers look for in college applications . But what are these officers looking for in the college essay itself? What are the top qualities of a successful application essay?

In analyzing various essays of admitted applicants, we’ve come up with a list of the characteristics that most of these pieces have in common. We’ll be referring to some of these pieces throughout the post.

Plus, we give you access to 30 college essays that earned their writers acceptance into Ivy League schools. Grab these below.

The College Application Essay In a Nutshell

Most students applying to a college or university in the U.S. must submit an application essay (or “personal statement”) with their application.

Depending on the application platform the college uses (typically either Coalition or the Common App ), students have 500-650 words to craft a response. While each of these platforms has college essay prompts, it’s helpful to view these prompts as general guidelines as to what colleges are looking for in a response.

Based on these prompts and our own experience coaching college essay students , the application essay is:

  • the chance to say what the rest of your application doesn’t say
  • a demonstration of your character, values, and/or voice
  • the platform to show who you are outside of a resume/transcript
  • an introspective personal essay

The college essay is NOT :

  • a rehashing of your resume
  • an excuse or explanation of other components of your application
  • a formal, five-paragraph essay
  • what you think “colleges want to hear”

A standard college application includes an academic transcript, recommendation letters, extracurricular / activities section, an optional resume, and standardized test scores. The essay is an addition  to these 4 general components, so it makes sense that it should complement them by saying something new.

That’s why we like to define the essay as a “demonstration of character, values, and/or voice.” True, these elements can be inferred from other components of the application. But the essay is your opportunity to clearly and personally demonstrate what matters to you, who you are at the core, and/or your essential perspectives of the world.

For this reason, the college essay is introspective and personal. Colleges want to hear that “I” voice in the application essay, loud and clear, and they want active, intelligent reflection.

You can see this in action in the 30 college essays that worked, which you can download below.

( Note: Some colleges might require applicants to submit supplemental essays in addition to their personal statement. These often have very specific prompts and different word lengths. Here are 8 great tips for approaching supplemental essays . )

7 Qualities of a Successful College Essay

We’ve assessed several college essays of applicants admitted to a wide range of schools, including Ivy League institutions. While extremely diverse, these pieces generally had the following characteristics in common.

1. Introspective and reflective

Many English teachers tell their students not to use the first-person “I” in their essays. While this might be the standard for some academic essays, the college essay  should  include that “I.” What’s more, it should include a  lot  of that “I”!

This can be understandably uncomfortable for students, many of whom may simply not be used to talking about themselves openly and declaratively on a page. It can also feel awkward from a stylistic point of view for students who are not used to writing in the first-person.

Yet colleges want to hear your words in your own voice, and they are especially interested in learning more about your perspectives on the world and insights gleaned from your various life experiences. That’s why many successful college essays are highly introspective, full of the writer’s active reflections on what they’ve learned, how they view the world, and who they are.

We typically see the bulk of such introspection at the  end  of an essay, where the writer summarizes these reflections (although this is by no means standard), as we can see in the conclusion to Erica’s essay here, which describes her earlier attempt to write and publish a novel:

Sometimes, when I’m feeling insecure about my ability as a novelist I open up my first draft again, turn to a random chapter, and read it aloud. Publishing that first draft would have been a horrible embarrassment that would have haunted me for the rest of my life. Over the past half-decade, I’ve been able to explore my own literary voice, and develop a truly original work that I will be proud to display. This experience taught me that “following your dreams” requires more than just wishing upon a star. It takes sacrifice, persistence, and grueling work to turn fantasy into reality.

In her personal statement, Aja reflects deeply on what she specifically learned from an experience described earlier on in the piece:

I found from my experiment and questioning within my mind that my practices distinguished me from others, thereby allowing me to form relationships on the basis of common interest or personality, rather than cultural similarities, that summer. I valued the relationships more, and formed a deep connection with my lab partner, whom I had found was similar to me in many ways.

Notice how both of these selections contain a lot of that first-person voice, which is critical to elaborating perspectives, learning points, and introspective thoughts. And did we mention that admissions officers are  looking for  those specific perspectives, learning points, and thoughts that compose who you are?

2. Full of a student’s voice

An academic transcript can be revealing to admissions officers. The same goes for recommendation letters and resumes. But it’s hard to convey an individual voice in these application components. The college essay is your prime vehicle for speaking directly to colleges in your own words  about what matters to you.

Successful college essays thus veer away from the formal voice many students employ when writing academic essays. Rather, they showcase a student’s unique way of expressing themselves on a page, which can be, for example, humorous, informal, intimate, lyrical, and/or speculative.

Voice is at the forefront of Elizabeth’s essay about her love for “all that is spicy:”

I am an aspiring hot sauce sommelier. Ever since I was a child, I have been in search for all that is spicy. I began by dabbling in peppers of the jarred variety. Pepperoncini, giardiniera, sports peppers, and jalapeños became not only toppings, but appetizers, complete entrées, and desserts. As my palate matured, I delved into a more aggressive assortment of spicy fare. I’m not referring to Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, the crunchy snack devoured by dilettantes. No, it was bottles of infernal magma that came next in my tasting curriculum.

Notice how Elizabeth’s descriptions of her passion for spice are rich with her voice: playful, intelligent, and humorous. This also gives us insight into a specific aspect of her character–that’s the power of voice when it comes to personal essay writing, and college admissions officers are very interested in applicants’ characters.

3. Descriptive and engaging

You don’t have to be a natural creative writer to compose a successful college essay. Yet competitive essays aren’t afraid to dive deeply into a subject and describe it, whether that description relates to imagery, emotions, perspectives, or insights. A college essay shouldn’t leave the reader guessing in any way–it should be highly specific and it should tell your story in an engaging fashion.

Harry’s more intellectual essay presents his views on common values in society. He is careful to be very specific and descriptive in these views, incorporating both a relevant incident from history and his own direct relationship to the issue:

Admittedly, the problem of social integration is one I feel can be widely overstated – for example, when I was looking into some research for a similar topic a couple of years ago, I found numerous surveys indicating that ethnic minorities (especially Islam) identify much more closely with Britain than do the population at large. Still though, I, like many others, find myself constantly troubled by the prospect of the war from within that seems to be developing. This fear is fuelled by events such as the brutal killing of the soldier Lee Rigby at the hands of two British Muslims a couple of years ago.

In her essay, Amanda is extremely detailed in describing her experience as a caretaker for a difficult child. The result is a clear portrait of the challenge itself and Amanda’s relationship to this challenge, told from the perspective of an engaging storyteller:

Then I met Robyn, and I realized how wrong I was. Prone to anger, aggressive, sometimes violent (I have the scar to prove it). Every Sunday with Robyn was a challenge. Yoga, dancing, cooking, art, tennis – none of these activities held her interest for long before she would inevitably throw a tantrum or stalk over to a corner to sulk or fight with the other children. She alternated between wrapping her arms around my neck, declaring to anyone who passed by that she loved me, and clawing at my arms, screaming at me to leave her alone.

The successful college essays we see always  emerge from a place of honesty. Writing with honesty also is more likely to accurately convey a student’s unique voice, inspire reflection and introspection, and result in a descriptive, meaningful piece (all of the qualities listed in this post!).

Sometimes this means adopting a candid or direct voice on the page. James starts his essay frankly in this singular statement:

Simply put, my place of inner peace is the seat of that 50 foot sliver of carbon and kevlar called a rowing shell, cutting through the water in the middle of a race.

Or it might mean describing a challenge, vulnerability, or perspective truthfully, as Martin does in his essay about the experiences that have molded his character over the years:

Looking back, I have never been the “masculine boy” as society says my role to be. I have always thought I do not fit the social definition of a male as one who is “manly” and “sporty” and this alienating feeling of being different still persists today at times. However, I also have become more comfortable with myself, and I see my growth firsthand throughout high school.

Given that many universities value “truth” in their own mission statements and mottos, admissions officers will prioritize those essays that ring with a student’s honest voice.

5. Unconventional & distinct

This is by no means a requirement of a successful college essay. But many of the essays that earn students acceptance at their dream schools veer away from the predictable or expected, as we saw in Elizabeth’s essay above (“I am an aspiring hot sauce sommelier”). They are, in a nutshell, 100% unique.

We’ve seen some essays, for example, that follow more radical structures, such as list formats or experimental narratives. Others focus on unexpected subjects, like Shanaz’s piece on the relevance of Game of Thrones in her life and trajectory of learning.

And, time and again, successful college essays step away from what admissions officers already see in applications–academics, standardized tests, extracurricular activities, and classes. They may focus on something very specific (hot sauce or Game of Thrones ), seemingly ordinary (eating a kosher meal in public or working on a problem set), or personally interesting (a historic murder or wrestling game).

Regardless, the essays that “work” emphasize the unexpected, as opposed to the expected. Distinct essays will also feel as if they could not have been written by anyone else .

6. Well-written

This might also sound like an obvious quality of a successful essay, but it’s still worth mentioning. The most competitive application essays showcase strong writing skills, providing evidence of a student’s ability to tell a specific story artfully and well.

Essays should also be error-free, grammatically precise, and stylistically on point. Successful pieces also might demonstrate versatility through varied sentence structure, word choice, and rhetorical or literary devices. Lastly, well-written essays typically adhere to a specific storytelling structure.

This excerpt from Justin’s essay about his experience in the California Cadet Corps, for example, displays a high command of language, word choice, and sentence structure:

Through Survival, I learned many things about myself and the way I approach the world. I realized that I take for granted innumerable small privileges and conveniences and that I undervalue what I do have. Now that I had experienced true and sustained hunger, I felt regret for times when I threw away food and behaved with unconscious waste.

7. Meaningful

Above all, a successful college essay adds value to a student’s holistic college application. It is full of  meaning , in that it

  • showcases a student’s unique voice
  • elucidates an applicant’s particular perspective(s), character trait(s), and/or belief(s) and
  • honestly conveys a significant component of who a student is

It might be difficult to compress the entirety of who you are into 650 words. Yet it is most certainly possible to craft 650 words that add significant meaning to an overall application in terms of a student’s  personal potential for the future. This is exactly what admissions officers are looking for .

9 Tips for How to Find Success in Life

How Success Is Defined and How You Can Achieve It

Rachel Goldman, PhD FTOS, is a licensed psychologist, clinical assistant professor, speaker, wellness expert specializing in eating behaviors, stress management, and health behavior change.

essay on qualities required for success

Success is often defined as the ability to reach your goals in life, whatever those goals may be. In some ways, a better word for success might be attainment, accomplishment, or progress. It is not necessarily a destination but a journey that helps develop the skills and resources you need to thrive.

Because goals are sef-created, what people view as success can vary depending on their needs, goals, and situation.

There are many different tactics for how to be successful in life, but the strategy that works best for you may depend on what success means to you . If you think of success as doing well at work or earning a high salary, your professional goals and accomplishments will take priority.

While professional success can be one piece of the puzzle, it leaves out many other important areas of life. Family, romantic relationships, academics, and athletics are just a few areas where people may strive for success. Your definition of success may vary, but many might define it as being fulfilled, happy, safe, healthy, and loved.

So what can you do to boost your chances of achieving these things? What are some of the habits of successful people? There is no single right way to be successful. What works for you might not work for someone else.

There may not be a perfect combination of ingredients that can guarantee success. Still, there are some basic steps you can follow that can improve your chances of being successful in life, love, work, or whatever happens to be important to you.

Build a Growth Mindset

vgajic / Getty Images

Research by psychologist Carol Dweck suggests that there are two basic mindsets that influence how people think about themselves and their abilities: the fixed mindset and the growth mindset.

People who possess a fixed mindset believe that things such as intelligence are static and unchangeable. Those with a fixed mindset believe that success isn't a result of hard work—it's simply a consequence of innate talents.

Because they believe that such talents are something people are either born with or without, they tend to give up more easily in the face of a challenge. They quit when things do not come easily because they believe that they lack the inborn skill needed to excel.

Those who have a growth mindset, on the other hand, feel that they can change, grow, and learn through effort. People who believe that they are capable of growth are more likely to achieve success. When things get tough, they look for ways to improve their skills and keep working toward success.

People with a growth mindset believe that they have control of their life, while those with a fixed mindset believe that things are out of their control.

What can you do to build a growth mindset?

  • Believe that your efforts matter . Rather than thinking their abilities are fixed or stuck, people who have a growth mindset believe that effort and hard work can lead to meaningful growth.
  • Learn new skills . When faced with a challenge, they look for ways to develop the knowledge and skills that they need to overcome and triumph.
  • View failures as learning experiences . People with growth mindsets don't believe that failure is a reflection of their abilities. Instead, they view it as a valuable source of experience from which they can learn and improve. "That didn't work," they might think, "so this time I'll try something a little different."

Improve Your Emotional Intelligence

AlexD75 / Getty Images

Overall intelligence has long been believed to be one factor contributing to success in different areas of life, but some experts suggest that emotional intelligence may actually matter even more. Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to understand, utilize, and reason with emotions. Emotionally intelligent people are able to understand not only their own emotions, but those of others as well.

To improve your emotional intelligence:

  • Pay attention to your own emotions . Focus on identifying what you are feeling and what is causing those feelings.
  • Manage your emotions . Step back and try to view things with an impartial eye. Avoid bottling up or repressing your feelings, but look for healthy and appropriate ways of dealing with what you are feeling.
  • Listen to others. This not only involves hearing what they are saying, but also paying attention to nonverbal signals and body language.

Develop Mental Toughness

Mental toughness refers to the resilience to carry on and continue trying even in the face of obstacles. People who possess this mental strength see challenges as opportunities. They also feel that they have control over their own destiny, are confident in their abilities to succeed, and are committed to finishing what they start.

What can you do to improve your mental toughness and increase your chances of being successful in life?

  • Believe in yourself . Cut out negative self-talk and look for ways to stay positive and self-encouraging.
  • Keep trying . Even when things seem impossible or setbacks keep holding you back, focus on ways that you can develop your skills and keep soldiering forward. One of the key habits of successful people is always looking at setbacks or failures as learning opportunities.
  • Care for yourself . Staying strong also means that you treat yourself with kindness. Check in with yourself regularly to ensure you have the things you need to thrive.
  • Look for growth opportunities . Learning more about yourself and challenging yourself to try new things can provide opportunities for self-discovery.

Strengthen Your Willpower

Edwin Jimenez / Riser / Getty Images

In a long-running longitudinal study, psychologists followed a group of children who were identified by their teachers as highly intelligent. As they compared how these subjects fared throughout childhood and into adulthood, researchers found that those who ultimately were the most successful in life shared some key characteristics, including perseverance and willpower.

These characteristics tend to be part of an individual's overall personality, but they are also something you can improve. Delayed gratification , learning to persist in the face of challenges, and waiting for the rewards of your hard work can often be the key to success in life.

Strategies you can use to improve your willpower include:

  • Distraction . For example, if you are trying to lose weight but are having a difficult time staying away from your favorite snacks, distracting yourself during your moments of weakness can be an effective way to avoid giving in to temptation.
  • Practice . Willpower is something you can build, but it takes time and effort. Start by making small goals that require will power to achieve, such as avoiding sugary snacks. As you build your ability to use your will power to achieve such small goals, you may find that your willpower is also stronger when working on much larger goals.

Focus on Intrinsic Motivations

What is it that motivates you the most? Do you find that the promise of external rewards keeps you reaching for your goals, or is it the more personal, intrinsic motivators that keep you feeling inspired? While extrinsic rewards such as money, awards, and praise can be helpful, many people find that they are most motivated when they are doing things for personal satisfaction.

If you are doing things because you enjoy them, because you find them meaningful, or because you enjoy seeing the effects of your work, then you are driven by intrinsic motivations. Research has shown that while incentives can be a better predictor of some types of performance, intrinsic motivators tend to be better at predicting performance quality.

While it is often the external motivators that get people started, it is the internal motivators that kick in and keep people going in order to maintain those new behaviors.

What can you do to boost your sense of intrinsic motivation?

  • Challenge yourself . Pursuing a goal that is achievable but not necessarily easy, is a great way to increase motivation to succeed. Challenges can keep you interested in a task, improve your self-esteem, and offer feedback on areas you can improve on. Choosing a slightly challenging task will help motivate you to get started—it feels exciting!
  • Stay curious . Look for things that grab your attention and that you want to learn more about.
  • Take control . It can be difficult to stay intrinsically motivated to pursue a goal if you don't feel that you have any real influence over the outcome. Look for ways that you can take an active role.
  • Don't fear competition . There might be other people trying to reach the same goals as you, but this doesn't mean you should give up. Don't compare your progress or journey to anyone else's. You can look to others for motivation and inspiration, but remember that we all have different paths.

Set Achievable Goals

Successful people know that they need to start by having attainable goals to achieve. These goals are not necessarily easy to reach, but by having something to aim for, you will be better able to move forward and overcome obstacles.

When setting goals :

  • Be as specific as possible : Choosing a goal like "I'm going to spend 20 minutes a day learning a new language" is more achievable than setting a general goal like "I'm going to learn French."
  • Break your goal into smaller steps : Even if you select a specific goal, it can often seem difficult to achieve. Try breaking it into smaller steps that allow you to focus on moving forward without becoming overwhelmed.
  • Reward progress : Recognize your successes along the way and allow yourself to enjoy your accomplishments.

Nurture Traits Linked to High Potential

Psychologists have long attempted to link specific traits or personality characteristics to success in life and work. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is one widely used assessment that is often utilized by businesses to screen job candidates. However, research often fails to show that the MBTI actually correlates to performance.

According to some more recent research, there are certain traits that tend to be consistently tied to success. Researchers Ian MacRae and Adrian Furnham have identified six key traits that can play a role in how well people do at work. However, they note that there are optimal levels of these traits. Too little of these characteristics can hinder success, but so can having too much.

If you are trying to learn how to be successful in life, consider what you can do to nurture these key traits:

Conscientiousness

Conscientious people consider the effects of their actions. They also consider how other people will react and feel. You can nurture this trait by:

  • Thinking about the consequences of actions
  • Considering other people's perspectives

Accepting of Ambiguity

Life is full of situations that are not always clear. People with a great deal of potential for success are better able to accept this ambiguity. Rather than being rigid and inflexible, they are ready to adapt when the unexpected comes their way. You can learn to embrace ambiguity by:

  • Challenging your perspectives and considering opinions and ideas other than your own
  • Not fearing the unfamiliar
  • Being willing to change
  • Valuing diversity

Capable of Adjustment

In addition to being able to accept ambiguity, success often hinges on the ability to quickly adjust to change. You can nurture this ability to adjust by:

  • Reframing difficult situations, to see them as opportunities to learn and grow rather than simply obstacles to live through
  • Being open to change; when plans or situations change, step back and look at ways to cope

The world's most successful people often exemplify great courage. They are willing to take risks, even in the face of potential failure. Research suggests that courageous people utilize positive emotions to overcome fear. You can improve your tolerance of risk by:

  • Quelling negative emotions and focusing on more positive feelings
  • Balancing risk with common sense; being cautious and pragmatic can also pay off, depending upon the situation

People who are successful tend to be curious about the world around them. They are always eager to learn more, including new knowledge and skills. You can cultivate your sense of curiosity by:

  • Relating tasks to your interests: If you find filing boring, for example, look for a more efficient way to categorize the information to play to your strengths as an organizer.
  • Learning new things

Competitiveness

Successful people are able to utilize competition to motivate, but avoid falling prey to jealousy. You can nurture a healthy sense of competition by:

  • Focusing on your own improvements; rather than worry about being the best at something, pay attention to your progress
  • Being happy when others succeed

Some personality traits and types may be better suited for certain jobs than others. However, no specific personality trait can guarantee success, nor can being low in that trait doom someone to failure.

While there are differences in opinion on just how much personality can be altered , nurturing some of these high potential traits might help you develop skills that can serve you well in many different aspects of your life.

Cultivate Strong Social Support

Doing things alone can be difficult, but having a strong social support system can make things easier. Different types of social support can be important for success.

  • Emotional support can provide the comfort, security, and empathy you need as you face challenges.
  • Esteem support can boost your confidence and encourage you to keep going.
  • Informational support can provide mentorship, advice, and other necessary resources to reach your goals.
  • Tangible support can help you in active and practical ways. This might involve someone helping you perform a task or taking care of the task for you.

Mentors, friends, co-workers, and family members can cheer you on when things get tough and even offer advice and assistance that can help you improve your chances for success.

Avoid Burnout

Burnout can happen when you are exposed to chronic stress . It can seriously impede success and lead to exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced performance.

Reduced motivation makes it harder to stick to your goals and can make you feel apathetic and uninterested.

Self-care strategies, such as getting enough sleep and engaging in healthy eating, can relieve some stress. But addressing burnout often requires getting to the bottom of the issue that is causing the problem.

Sometimes, this might mean reassessing your goals. If your goals are creating too much stress or if you are trying to achieve too much too fast, it can be a recipe for burnout. Look for ways to reduce stress, whether that involves shifting your goals, changing your plans, or even doing something more significant like moving somewhere else or changing jobs.

A Word From Verywell

There is no single measure of success, and certainly no single answer for how to be successful in life. Yet by looking at some of the habits of successful people, you can learn new tactics and strategies to implement in your own daily life. Cultivate and nurture these abilities, and over time you may find that you are better able to reach your goals and achieve the success you want in life.

76 Indispensable Qualities of Success You Need to Achieve Your Goals

Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go. – William Feather

Success is a Delicate Balance

Success cannot be defined by one single quality, characteristic or psychological trait. If it were that easy, then everyone would be successful and there would be no purpose for this article or mind map. Instead, success is rather a delicately blended mixture of qualities, characteristics, and traits that if balanced in the right combinations will help you attain the pinnacles of achievement. Just like the ingredients of an elegant meal, a little too much  confidence , or too little  attention to detail and the entire cake will fall apart when heated up in the oven.

Within today’s discussion, we will break down the indispensable qualities of success from a variety of angles and perspectives.

Personal Qualities of Success

Within this section, we will delve into the personal traits and emotional qualities that are indispensable for success.

When we cultivate the quality of confidence, everything naturally seems easier, more effortless and we have a tendency to act with deeper conviction and passion.

When we are patient we make better decisions, are able to spot opportunities and tend to be far more relaxed when undertaking tasks and activities.

Gratitude helps us appreciate the little things in life. It helps us appreciate what we have, and that naturally makes us feel good and puts us in a positive frame-of-mind.

Competitive

A competitive spirit pushes us to our limits, forces us to think intelligently about our circumstances, and entices us to step outside our comfort zones in order to do whatever it takes to win at the game of life.

Has Sense of Humor

Having a sense of humor doesn’t mean that we joke around all day. What it does mean is that we see things from a light-hearted perspective. This naturally puts our mind at ease and allows us to think with greater clarity of thought.

Self-Belief and Assurance

When we truly believe in ourselves and our own abilities, then anything and everything becomes possible to achieve. It is this self-belief that separates remarkable people from the masses.

Appreciation for Life and Others

Appreciation comes in many forms. We can appreciate our current circumstances no matter how limited they may seem. As a result, we naturally begin to learn from our experiences and can make better and more effective decisions as a result.

We can also take time to appreciate what the people in our lives teach us on a daily basis — even though on the surface they may seem to be holding us back.

When everything is said and done, it is clear that appreciation brings about more clarity and helps us to learn about ourselves, life, others and our environment in many unexpected ways.

When we cultivate the quality of being humble, this naturally opens our mind to alternate perspectives while enabling us to learn from our environment and other people in ways that we may not have realized was possible.

When we come across as being friendly, this naturally makes us very approachable. When a person is approachable it enables them to attract the right kinds of circumstances, people, and opportunities into their lives that will help them achieve their goals and objectives.

When we lack the capacity to forgive others for their indiscretions or mistakes, we tend to hold onto those negative feelings, and they tend to manifest in our lives in very limiting ways. Not only do they influence our mood, but they also have a lasting impact on our decision making and the thought process that goes into making those decisions.

Forgiving others, allows us to let go of these negative emotions and enables us a greater clarity of thought.

Finally, it is also very important to forgive yourself for mistakes and errors you have made in the past. Blaming yourself for this behavior will eat you up little-by-little until every fragment of your life is absorbed with ill-feelings.

Calm Under Pressure

When we display a sense of calmness under pressure situations, we naturally tend to think with greater clarity and thusly make more effective decisions.

Living Passionately

Passionate living comes from the heart. It’s not something that you switch on or off at a moment’s notice, it is instead something that you become wholeheartedly inside and out.

Living passionately will magnetically attract into your life the opportunities, people, and circumstances you need to get you what you want most in life.

Living Relentlessly and Tenaciously

Those who are relentless and tenacious naturally do more in less time, and therefore discover greater opportunities for growth to help them become who they need to become in order to achieve what they want most in life.

Independent

Living independently does not mean that you do not rely on others to help you achieve your goals and objectives. What it does mean is that you don’t need to rely on others to achieve your goals and objectives because you have built up the necessary knowledge, resources and experience to achieve what you want most in life.

You do however choose to put your trust in other people because you realize that you must leverage your time whenever possible.

Has Burning Desire

Living with a burning desire means being unable to sleep at night because you have plans and ideas you want to implement that will take you one step closer towards your goals and objectives the very next day.

Living with a burning desire means that you undertake tasks enthusiastically and that you face challenges head-on with a sense of excitement and confidence.

As you awaken the very next morning you realize that life has actually become even better then it was the day before, and this naturally strengthens your desire to make the most of this brand new day.

Is Determined

Determination signifies that no matter what life throws your way, you will never ever quit in the face of adversity. You are determined to achieve your goals and objectives, and you will do whatever it takes no matter how long it takes to reach your desired outcomes.

Charismatic, Magnetic and Charming

Charisma, magnetism, and charm are indispensable qualities of the most influential people the world over. These people walk into a room and magnetically draw others to them by the way they talk, behave and project themselves in social situations.

Unless we have the courage to step outside of our comfort zones, to push the boundaries of what is possible, and to move beyond what we know, then we will simply fail to live up to our full potential.

Genuinely Caring

Caring for others, for life, ourselves and our circumstances come from the heart. When people truly care about their goals and objectives and care about the outcomes that each of their actions may potentially produce, they naturally become more socially aware and adept to the world around them.

Unconditionally Accepting of People

People are human, and they will tend not to be perfect, and will often make mistakes that were not intended to hurt you. To accept other people unconditionally means that we accept them for who they are and for what they do without conditions or strings attached.

Having a fun loving nature means that we see the brighter side of life no matter how dreadful or dire the consequences we find ourselves in.

Fun loving individuals tend to relax more, stress less, enjoy life and also tend to be more creative. All of these tendencies naturally help them achieve their goals and objectives far more easily and effortlessly.

Fascinated By People and Life

Children are always fascinated and curious about people and life. They will ask question after question to learn as much as they can about the world around them.

Successful people are very much the same as children. They are in fact big kids, always asking questions, always wanting to learn and know more about people, life, events and the circumstances that surround them. As a result, they end up knowing a lot more then the average person, and can, therefore, make better and more effective decisions.

Being sincere means that we are genuine and honest when dealing with other people and circumstances. We don’t hide our true selves behind a mask or veil, and we certainly don’t tell people what they want to hear. We may soften our approach at times, however this does not take away from our sincerity.

Being sincere means that we are very approachable and likable, and this, in turn, attracts a greater array of people and opportunities our way.

When we are generous with our time, money and heart, we naturally radiate a positive energy — an energy that shows other people that we give more than what we take, and as a result we become useful to society, we become an important voice within the community and we radiate an aura of influence and respect.

Emotionally Intelligent and Proactive

Emotional intelligence is your ability to proactively choose the right emotion that is most appropriate for the circumstances you find yourself in that will get you what you want most within that specific situation.

When you proactively control your emotions, then the world becomes your oyster as you effectively take control of your Life. On the flip-side, when you react to events and circumstances in emotional ways, then you are effectively giving up control of yourself to your environment.

Emotionally Rich, Resilient and Strong

Being emotionally rich means that you live life experiencing a wide variety of empowering and challenging emotions that enable you to grow psychologically on a daily basis. This naturally strengthens your ability to deal with the unexpected consequences of your decisions and actions.

There are many people out there who limit themselves to experiencing only a few emotions. By doing this, they are putting themselves at a massive disadvantage. Not only do they fail to grow emotionally, but they also fail to develop the psychological resilience they need to effectively deal with the unexpected circumstances that life throws their way. Hence, it is important never to resist the emotions you feel, but rather genuinely experience them and take time to understand the message that they are sending your way.

Personal Traits of High Achievers

Social Qualities of Success

Within this section, we will break down the indispensable social aspects of success.

Avoids Negative Associations

People who don’t support our goals or personal growth tend to weigh us down both physically and psychologically.

You must be very careful when selecting your group of peers. Make sure that they are supportive of you and the outcomes you desire to experience in your life. If they are not, then they could very well be a liability that will keep you from living the life you seek.

Is Always Smiling

When we smile we immediately radiate a powerful and magnetic energy that’s very attractive to others. This will naturally make you more approachable and will help you to attract more opportunities into your life.

Influences by Example

Nobody likes a dictator who tells you what to do but doesn’t do it themselves.

The greatest form of influence over other people is your ability to influence by example — meaning that you effectively b ecome and do what you would like others to become and do in return.

Honors Personal Commitments and Promises

When you make a promise or commit to something you must keep it, otherwise you will lose the respect of your peers and colleagues, which will likewise pull you away from the opportunities you need to attain your goals and objectives.

Always Contributing

The more you contribute to people’s lives, to the community and to organizations, the greater influence, and respect you will gain in the eyes of your peers. This will, over time help attract the opportunities you need to achieve your goals and objectives.

Complimentary of Others

People like to know that you respect and appreciate them. As a result, they will respect and appreciate you in return. To do this, simply be genuinely complimentary of others when within their company, and they will in-turn be more open to your ideas and suggestions.

Challenges Others

Successful people always challenge themselves to move beyond their present abilities. Likewise, they know that in order to get the best out of others, they must also challenge them to live up to their fullest potential each and every day.

Is Not Concerned with Criticism

Everyone has an opinion about something, and not everyone’s opinion or perspective will ever be exactly the same. Likewise, we cannot please everyone at the same time, nor can we please everyone all of the time. As a result, we may experience criticism whether we like it or not.

When we don’t concern ourselves with the criticism of others we naturally press forward with greater clarity of mind. On the other hand, when we do distract ourselves by the criticisms of our peers, colleagues, family, and friends, we tend to be very hesitant, tend to worry and tend to make ineffective decisions.

Seeks Equality: Win/Win Relationships

Nobody likes to lose, and everybody wants to be treated fairly and equally. When dealing with others it is important to work from the perspective of creating win/win relationships that benefit all parties concerned. In this way, people will respect you and will be more willing to help you achieve your personal goals and objectives.

Seeks Understanding First

It is so very easy to get absorbed within our own personal agendas that we lose sight of the message that another person is trying to get across to us. This could lead to missed opportunities, hurt feelings and a plethora of other consequences that may temporarily halt the progress we are trying to make towards the achievement of our objectives.

Seeks Like-Minded Associations

Successful people constantly seek like-minded associations who have similar interests, beliefs, values, goals, and perspectives about life. They realize that these people are congruent with whom they seek to become , and as such will support them wholeheartedly as they move forward towards the achievement of their goals and objectives.

Seeks to Build Relationships

You must become a relationship builder — taking time daily to connect with new people, to cultivate existing relationships, and to build powerful emotional bonds with the people in your life. Your mission is to help others get what they want emotionally, financially and physically, and then maybe (don’t openly expect it) they will in-turn help you attain your goals and objectives when you need them most.

Who you know, and the depth of the emotional bond you develop with these people could be the only thing standing between you and your objectives.

Listens Insightfully

When we listen openly without judgment or criticism, we allow ourselves the opportunity to understand the true meaning behind a person’s message. This shows them that we genuinely care and respect who they are and the message they are attempting to get across to us. As a result, we will gain their respect and admiration in return.

Is Honest and Has Integrity

With these two qualities the world is your oyster, and without them, you can easily lose the respect of an entire community that you rely on to help you achieve your goals and objectives.

Shows Sincere Interest in People

Finally, it’s absolutely critical that you show sincere interest in people. People want to feel that they are important and that others respect and admire them. In this way, you will gain their respect and admiration in return.

Social Qualities of High Achievers

Intellectual Qualities of Success

Within this section, we will identify the intellectual and effective thinking habits that are required for success.

Living as an Optimistic Realist

Pure optimism is a very endearing quality. However, it can very quickly become a weakness because it blindsides the individual into thinking that everything will be okay no matter what they do, think or decide.

The alternative is to become an optimistic realist. This means that you expect that positive things will happen, however, you also have the necessary forward thinking to understand that there will be obstacles along your path and that you must adapt your approach if you want to attain your goals and objectives.

Living Life as a Game

Living life as a game means not taking things too seriously and not getting overly upset when obstacles arise. Moreover, it means treating every problem as a new challenge that will help you grow and learn more about yourself.

Furthermore, we must remember that the game of life never ends as long as you keep playing .

Open Minded

Being open-minded means that you acknowledge other people’s perspectives, that you take time to understand alternative ideas, and that you don’t lose yourself in your own personal view of the world. In this way, you will open the channels of communication and understanding between you and other people — helping you to more readily learn from other people’s mistakes and identify opportunities that may come your way.

Asks Effective Questions

Without asking the right kinds of questions, you will have no hope of finding the kinds of answers you are looking for to achieve your goals and objectives.

Additionally, effective questions are the windows to new insights, ideas and lifelong lessons that will help you overcome the setbacks that life throws your way.

Always Reframes Negativity

Reframing negativity means that you re-interpret negative words or unfortunate events and circumstances in a way that will help you to more effectively deal with the challenges at hand. In this way you will discover alternative perspectives and obtain new ideas and insights that will help you to move through your problems far more efficiently.

Constant Awareness of Thoughts

Everything begins with a thought!

The emotion you are experiencing right now started with a single thought . The decision you just made, started with a single thought . And the life you see before you today, started with a single thought long, long, long ago.

Becoming aware of your thoughts is the first step to change. Once you realize that your thoughts are the cause of all your problems in life, then you can begin to consciously transform them accordingly.

With a sense of awareness you are able to see your life from a new perspective and from a variety of angles — without this sense of awareness, you may as well be walking blindly through a thick fog, not knowing what you are going to stand on as you take your next step.

Good Attention to Detail

Cultivating the habit of attending to the de tails will allow you to see things that others simply overlook and thusly fail to understand. This, in essence, provides you with a unique advantage. Because you identify what others don’t, you can, therefore, make better and more effective decisions, and are more prone to recognizing the opportunities that come your way.

Thinks Diligently

To think diligently means being able to think in a disciplined, patient and proactive way that enables you to filter out any distractions that may come your way.

Thinks Strategically

Strategic thinking is a balance of critical thinking, problem solving and creativity. All of which are of primary importance when it comes to thinking flexibly under difficult conditions when effective decisions need to be made.

Intellectual Attributes of High Achievers

Spiritual Qualities of Success

Within this section, we will unlock the spiritual qualities of success.

Lives within the Flow of Life

Living within the flow of life basically means taking action without resistance, judgment or regret. You are in essence living your life detached emotionally from circumstances and detached mentally from judging the conditions that life throws your way. This is very advantageous because it enables you to perceive events from an observer’s perspective , allowing you to make more effective choices and decisions as you go about your day.

Thinks Abundant Thoughts

Thinking abundantly involves the process of thinking about what you want to do, be, have and achieve. Furthermore, it involves the process of seeing opportunity where there is lack, or seeing solutions where others only see obstacles and problems.

Experiences Abundant Feelings

The experience of abundant feelings is very closely tied to the thought process. When you think abundantly you will experience feelings of abundance and this will likewise clarify your thought process and allow you to make more effective choices and decisions.

Lives within Present Moment

To live in the present moment does not mean that you cannot think about your future goals and objectives. What it does mean is that you are focusing all your energy on the NOW in order to maximize your understanding of the present moment and the circumstances you find yourself in. This, therefore, enables you to make more effective decisions that will help you attain your goals and objectives.

Spiritual Qualities of High Achievers

Behavioral Qualities of Success

Within this section, we will discuss the habitual patterns of behavior that are required for success.

Lives Detached from Outcomes

Detaching yourself from the outcomes and circumstances of your life means that you do not involve yourself emotionally as things come to pass — whether good or bad. This will help clarify your thinking and enable you to make better and more effective decisions.

If circumstances do not seem to go in your favor, then you detach yourself emotionally in order to gain insight into the possible opportunities that may now have presented themselves. Alternatively, if things do seem to go in your favor, then you also detach yourself emotionally from the experience in order to gain a better understanding of the possible flaws or future problems of the circumstances that you find yourself in.

Having ambition provides you with energy, with a sense of confidence, and a willingness to learn, grow and become more than what you are today.

Disciplined

When you are disciplined you naturally stick at a task for longer, you are more diligent in your actions, and you are more patient when it comes to making effective choices and decisions.

Let’s Go of Negative Emotions

By letting go of negative emotions such as jealousy, anger, and guilt you effectively clear your mind of the emotional clutter that will sabotage your thinking and limit your ability to make sensible decisions under pressure.

Never Makes Excuses

When we make excuses we are effectively laying blame on others, the environment or circumstances that we feel are out of our control.

When we do not feel under control we naturally project a sense of vulnerability, a sense of limited strength and capacity to proactively take charge of the events and circumstances in our lives — independent of external factors. It is easy to see how a person who locks themselves into this kind of behavior will never achieve their goals or objectives unless of course they drop their excuses and begin taking full responsibility for their lives and circumstances.

Never Judges

He who judges others for their decisions and actions is effectively acknowledging their own weaknesses within this area .

Many people are quick to judge others, and yet they rarely take the time to critically judge their own behaviors and actions.

By judging others suggests that you are closed-minded about alternative perspectives that contradict your own. This could very well prevent you from spotting potential opportunities that you may need in order to help you achieve your goals and objectives.

Never Complains

No matter how bad things seem, no matter how tired you feel, and no matter how much others are trying to steal your dream, you never complain, because you realize that the moment you complain is the precise moment you are giving in to others, events, and circumstances.

The moment you complain is the moment you are beginning to capitulate and give up on your goals and objectives.

Constantly Persevering Forward

No matter what happens, no matter what life decides to throw your way, as long as you keep moving forward and thinking proactively and intelligently about your next step, you will eventually reach your destination. Yes, the path may be somewhat unexpected or may take you slightly longer than you imagined, but you will get there as long as you keep moving forward .

Constantly Alert

When you cultivate the quality of alertness you become more attuned to other people, to yourself and to the events and circumstances of your life. This will help you to spot opportunities and identify new paths towards your goals and objectives that you were simply not aware of before.

Focused on Recognizing Opportunities

When you are alert and aware of yourself, others and your surrounding environment, you naturally notice patterns and the natural rhythms of life that will help you to recognize and identify opportunities that you were previously not attuned to before.

Focused on Solutions

Where others only see problems you see an opportunity or solution to grow, to take action or to make a more effective decision. In your eyes, problems are simply gifts wrapped in toilet paper . They might not look very appealing on the outside, however when you take upon your shoulders the task of unwrapping that toilet paper you soon get a taste of all the wonders that are hidden within. 😉

In order to focus on solutions, you must learn to ask better and more effective questions on a daily basis.

Goes the Extra Mile

Going the extra mile means doing more than you initially planned in order to help others, to move beyond your present circumstances or to simply make the most use of the opportunities that have been presented before you.

Going the extra mile also means moving beyond your present abilities, beyond your current capacity, expectations and beyond what you ever thought was possible.

Focused on What Want

When you only focus on what you want to do, be, have and achieve then you will sooner or later end up attaining your goals and objectives. It’s like a mathematical formula of sorts. Simply focus on ONLY what you want and eventually what you want will become your reality without questions. However, most people can’t seem to do this because of self-limiting beliefs, habits and a weak self-concept.

Takes Intelligent Risks

Taking intelligent risks means weighing up all of the pros and cons of a decision before taking decisive action. This requires good critical thinking and forward thinking skills.

Relishes Challenges

A person who is primed for success absolutely relishes the challenges that life throws their way. Without challenges and problems there is no excitement, and without excitement, there is no fulfillment.

Learns from Adversity, from Mistakes, and from Others

When you take action towards the attainment of your goals and objectives, you will naturally come across obstacles and setback along the way.

By taking time to learn from these experiences will help you to develop the necessary momentum to achieve your objectives far more quickly. Furthermore, taking time in advance to learn from the mistakes that others have made, will save you from making the same mistakes, and will enable you to make more effective decisions towards the attainment of your goals.

Seeks Excellence

Excellence is not something you do but rather something you become over time.

A person who is destined for greatness naturally endeavors to perform at their highest level, and at their peak potential each and every day. They seek to attain levels of excellence that others have yet to achieve, and they desire to live up to the highest standards that they set themselves each and every day.

Always Growing

A person who is on the path to greatness experiences each day as an opportunity to grow and become more than they were the day before. They will grow by moving beyond the obstacles that stand in their way, grow by learning from the people they interact with every day, and grow from seemingly the most irrelevant experiences that help to mold their personalities like clay.

Seeks Measurable Progress

Unless we measure the progress we are making towards the outcomes we desire to experience in our lives, then we will consequently fail to identify areas of improvement that we could take advantage of that would help us achieve our goals and objectives far more rapidly.

Keeps Promises to Self

There are many people out there who wholeheartedly believe that they have kept every promise they have ever made. However, little do they realize that it’s the promises to themselves which they haven’t kept that are hurting them the most.

When you keep seemingly insignificant promises to yourself, you effectively create a surge of energy that strengthens your belief systems, encourages the development of new habits, and effectively transforms your self-concept.

A quote by the controversial author Stuart Wilde that has stuck with me for many years says it in four words:

My Word… My Law!

Proactively Action Oriented

Being proactively action oriented means avoiding the pitfalls of procrastination. It means that you take action each and every day that moves you towards the attainment of your goals and objectives — no matter how significant or insignificant those actions might be. As long as they are moving you forward in the right direction, then you are progressively moving closer to your targets.

Takes Full Responsibility for Life Decisions

Finally, and maybe most importantly, unless you take full responsibility for your life decisions, behaviors, and actions, then you will simply fail to capitalize on the OPPORTUNE P ROBLEMS that your decisions, behaviors, and actions create.

Remember that a problem is only a gift wrapped in toilet paper that has opportunities hidden within. 😉

What it Takes to be a High Achiever

Concluding Thoughts

It has been said that success is more of a journey rather than a final destination. This couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to cultivating the indispensable qualities of success presented here. However, don’t expect that you will wake up tomorrow and suddenly transform your life overnight by adopting all of these qualities into your psychology. Unfortunately, life doesn’t work that way.

We are all creatures of habit that have taken weeks, months, years and even decades to develop and become who we are today. These habits do not suddenly change overnight. However, they do change over time if we actually take the time to consciously transform them with purpose and disciplined action .

To do this, begin by printing out this IQ Matrix map and select one or two qualities each week that you will progressively take time to cultivate. However, don’t just select these qualities, actually take the time to draw up a plan of action or better yet a mind map presenting you with at least a handful of ideas that will help you adopt these qualities into your psyche as you go about your day.

Finally, remember to be patient with yourself. Nothing ever good happens when we rush head first into things that we are not familiar with. 🙂

Success is much more than riches, power or fame. Success is simply the feeling of satisfaction and happiness one gets from leading a particular way of life or carrying out a particular activity. Success in any field or aspect of life can only be achieved through serious hard work and a little bit of opportunity. One of the most important recipes of success is determination and it might as well be the most important secret of success. To become successful, it is necessary to never give up until the aim of happiness and satisfaction in life is fully met. The happiness and satisfaction can be found in very different things in different people.

‘Success’ is a very powerful word. Many of us run behind it; most of us want to conquer it. So, what is success all about? Does this mean acquiring money or fame? Success means different things to different people.

Definition of Success

The Oxford dictionary defines success as “ The accomplishment of an aim or purpose ”.

This is the definition of success in theory, but in reality it differs according to people’s interests and goals.

It is very important for every individual to define their own concept of success rather than following someone else’s footsteps. We must analyze what makes us happy, what gives us contentment, and what motivates us . No one can list out our needs better than us.

True success means understanding our dreams and working joyfully to make those dreams come true.

How to Achieve Success

Many great people have suggested various ways to achieve success. But the real secret ingredient to nail success is to believe that we are already successful . With this strong affirmative thought, success can be easily achieved if we follow these three success factors:-

  • We should follow our passion because that is where our heart and soul is. When we follow our passion there is no need for us to put any extra effort.
  • The path to success is always challenging. We should build confidence to face any challenging situations.
  • The third and most important success factor is discipline . When we work in a disciplined manner, things will automatically fall in place.

If we stick to these three factors, nothing can stop us from tasting success. Success is a journey which continues even after the goal is achieved.

Success is perhaps the most desired feeling that all of us want to experience in the pursuit of our goals and also in day to day life. Apparently, every individual has his or her own definition of success.

Parameters of Success

None can deny that the world blindly respects and trusts wealthy people. Money is the prime dynamic force that drives this world. The sooner we acknowledge and appreciate this fact the better. Academic success is a prime concern for all in the initial part of life, especially in the school days. For those who continue perusing studies, academic success is the epitome of everything. It is mostly observed that success in personal life becomes a tough task for those who have all the riches. Here is where the common people feel successful to have a happy personal life.

Qualities for Achieving Success

One should not regret their decisions taken in the past and must refrain dwelling in the past. We must give deep thought before taking any decisions and uttering words from the mouth. For making a successful decision one must ask questions to oneself like: What Do I Need To Do? What Will Be The Outcome? Will It Be Worth Doing? One must keep the emotions for success and failures intact and should not showcase it to others. Successful people never wait for applause or acknowledgement of their work as they eventually get it. To become successful one must keep friends close and enemies closer. A successful person never demeans the weak and never underestimates anyone.

To become successful one has to understand what is important in that instant, recognize and work on the weaknesses, take criticism and hold on to the strengths. From a broader perspective Success defines the contentment, peace of mind and sheer happiness that is achieved. One should remember that only perseverance can lead the path to success.

Introduction

Real success is something we should all strive to attain. Real success can simply be said to be achieving a higher position or very high position in our chosen field or area; it can be politics or business or even education. In the world we live in today, we have equated success to riches, prosperity, fortunes, cars, houses and so many mundane things. We believe that once a person has enough money to be able to afford what he or she wants, the person is successful. This is a total and complete misconception that will be discussed here.

Money isn’t a measure of success?

While it is important to note that having money is a part of being successful and you can classify as rich person as being successful, money is not all that success is about and we have a lot of people around us that are seemingly rich but still count themselves as not successful. In fact, sometimes we see wealthy people and conclude that they aren’t successful. If this is true then we can safely conclude that success is deeper that money or other superficial and physical things can we might acquire or own. Money is very important to success in life but it is not a necessity and neither is it the only key to success in life.

What is real success?

Real success is way beyond the physical things we can see, real success is all about the feeling of satisfaction we get when we accomplish a task or do something, it is the happiness we get just by remembering what we have achieved and how we did it, real success has to do with a lot of positive feelings about ourselves and pride in what we have been able to do. As we can see, real success can only be achieved within one’s self and that is why a lot of people who we think are successful still believe they aren’t just because they aren’t happy with what they are doing or they feel they can get so much more out of life. From this, we can see that it is very important to attain true success in life.

How one can attain real success

For one to be successful, the first and most important thing one needs to do is to set goals and objectives. Only through the setting of goals can one really have something to pursue and claim success when we got those things or meet the set goals and target. A very important ingredient in achieving real success is determination. If one is going to get real success, one has to be determined to never give up no matter what the situation might be. Another very important ingredient is hard work as we can’t expect to be successful if we don’t work hard and do all it takes to meet all of our set goals. It is important that we get all the skills that are required for us to be successful in our chosen field.

The yardstick of success varies from people to people. The success story of an individual begins from the moment of his/her birth. A human child begins the winning streak by challenging every obstacle from the moment of conception to delivery. So no human is ever a failure, and hence confidently we can say that the very existence of every human in this word bear an element of success.

At the primary level, success lies within the parameters of cracking competitive exams and identifying one’s aptitude as to which profession the individual can flourish. On broader terms, a successful life is indeed a happy life reflecting upon how far one has reached. Success is not just related to material success.

How to become successful in life?

Nobody has ever become successful within a split of a moment. It is not an arduous task either. Strong determination coupled with hard work is the key to success. The first step to any attempt is to set the goal. There can be short-term goals, and long-term goals and both play a significant role on your road to success. Once the target set, then you have to do strategic planning. It is advisable to set a time frame as well. It will enable you to evaluate yourself on a regular basis. Fixing a time frame can also check into our procrastinating nature.

The next most important factor to become successful in life is hard work. It is the key to success. The adage rightly says that ‘no pain, no gain.’ You need to keep in mind that nobody else is going to do what we ought to do. If we put little effort and saw the seeds of hard work and perseverance, then we are sure to reap success and bounty. If you have strong willpower and the fire to ignite your dreams, then nothing can pull you back.

Stay focused on your objectives rather than hoping:

You can inspire yourself by being a self-motivator and critic. It opens room for self-improvement and appreciation. As it is said that ‘well begun is half done,’ do not hesitate to sparkle a start. Once we get a push, the rest will fall right in place. Even if we stumble down a couple of times, do not let go of our dreams. Failures are part and parcel of any successful entity. Mistakes are quite common and what needs to do is that we acknowledge them, and bear them in our mind. It ensures that we learn from the mistakes and in turn do not repeat them.

Nobody has ever been successful overnight. Patience is yet another golden rule. Just convince your mind that you are strong enough to be successful, though not today, at least some day. Never be disappointed if you lose. Trust in yourself and believe that you will reach there and you deserve to reach there. Your strength and weakness define the person you are, and the realization of it is rather important. Selfless dedication and hard work will definitely get you there.

Once you achieve your goals, you can be a strong inspiration to others. There is a warrior in you and never shut it down. You are capable of climbing higher and boom into a fantastic personality. Whatsoever, live a humble life, spread positivity and bear the torch to others’ road to success.

Saying education is the road to success is just another way of saying education is very important for all of us in life, without education there would not be a lot of progression in both our individual and collective lives as human. It is very important that we get education in order to get success in life. Most times, people generally limit education to the four walls of a classroom or a school.

Education has roots in every area of our existence; education can be said to begin from the home, parents and family members educate and train the children on good characters that they should imbibe and teach them to remove some habits and characters. All of these good characters imbibed by the child through education at home can help the child become very successful in future.

We all know that without good characters and morals, it is extremely hard to become successful or make it in life as people would not want to be associated with such person. We are also educated on good communication and interpersonal skills that are very necessary for us to make it and become successful in life.

Importance of education to success

We need to know the true value and worth of education. Education helps to facilitate our skill, knowledge and learning; it gives us a different view of the world and refines our personality, helping us to build very positive attitudes. Education is a totally essential tool in ensuring a bright future.

Education can serve as a tool in achieving anything and everything good about life. When we get a high level and degree of education, we earn respect and recognition from our family and the society at large.

Education can go a very long way in changing our thoughts and level of reasoning; it broadens our worldview and provides us with the opportunity to get knowledge and technical skills that are highly needed in life. We can improve our knowledge level and skill by watching educational documentaries and programmes on the TV, reading the news and keeping up to date with all of the happenings all over the world, reading a lot of books that can educate us. Education can go a long way to make us into more rational and civilised people. Education guarantees our place among people in the society and can help us achieve all of our dreams and aspirations in life.

Education and success

Success is the goal of all of us and it is our mission. Life can sometimes be full of different opportunities and challenges. Success can only be attained if we have all of the required and needed tools.

The most important tool for success is education because without education, we wouldn’t be able to have a wide view of the world and be able to innovate and develop. A lot of youths and children today cite the examples of the successful people that didn’t graduate from school and still went ahead to be successful in life. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook famously did not graduate from Harvard university but still went ahead to become very successful. The truth is even though Mark didn’t graduate, he was well educated and wouldn’t have been able to start Facebook if he had no knowledge of coding and wasn’t enrolled in Harvard at all. From him, we can learn that education isn’t limited and can basically be any way of widening our knowledge and improving ourselves. We should never confuse education with getting a diploma or a degree. Only education in or out of school can make us be successful in life and give us the true career we want.

Without education, life would be totally meaningless without education. The only path to true success in life is education, every one that has been, is and would be successful in life needs education to do that.

The modern world has a way of doing things, that is, modern man has his own particular view on how things should look. That view is completely different from the perspectives upheld by those who came before us, so to say. Like the ancient Greeks were obsessed with performing heroic deeds, or medieval European Christians with martyrdom and upholding saintly principles, we can argue that modern man has an obsession with success. Or more precisely, one aspect of that new worldview is to compare people between each other through the notion of success.

In a way, the beginning of the 21 st century is preoccupied with the concept of success more than ever before, both individual and collective. That fact can is seen in many aspects of our daily lives, people are not just oppressed with celebrities and successful people they want to live that lifestyle or achieve some sort of greatness. Looking at the current state of things one is encouraged to analyze the situation further and to find the reason behind these phenomena, or at least to offer a new perspective on worldwide trend.

What Makes a Person Successful?

There are many ways a person can be successful. Most people will think of celebrities, politicians, artists, entrepreneurs, etc. They will think of someone who is known the world over because of the thing they do, the thing they are good at. That’s all fine, but there are successful people who do not like to be celebrities and there are, most definitely, celebrities who cannot count as successful people.

What then makes a successful person? Is it how they do things? Is it what they get in return? Is it in the number of things they can amass in their life? Most of those things can count as some part of our overall image of such a person. But, how can we define it? What is it actually?

What I like is simple answers, they are usually correct and the most practical at the same time. Even though not all answers can be simple, this one is. When you look up the word success in any dictionary you will find that it is considered an accomplishment of an aim or a purpose.

Surely people were able to accomplish an aim or a pulpous in their lifetimes, even several, before the 21 st century. Why is it that this noun has such relevance for the classification of people in this age?

History of Success

If we take a look at history, as I mentioned before, we can see that every age has a different occupation. When we talk about the ancient Egyptians, we do not talk about single individuals who made this country so great we talk about the collective in general. But also, we do not know the names of the people who actually accomplished the construction of the pyramid we remember the person who ordered it and did nothing to build it.

Sometimes when I think about all the great artists whose names I do not know, that built humanity in the name of kings, it seems as if it was forbidden for individuals to be famous if they were not born into some sort of noble family.

That drastically changed with the return of democracy to Europe and the liberation from the old-world view that separated people into casts, genders, and races. The new perspective born from revolutions gave every man the right to control their destiny and therefore the right to become successful, to achieve one’s dreams and ideals. Celebrating success can be seen as a collective celebration of the boundless human potential to do incredible things. Is it always so shiny? Or is there a dark side to the story?

Can Success Harm us?

We all know that being successful has its price and the people on the top can often be alone, because of the many sacrifices they had to make to get there. There are also countless examples of people who have achieved success professionally but their health and social lives fail because they cannot handle the strain that comes with maintaining that image of perfection that is expected of them.

Then there is also the psychological pressure any person can experience when they become obsessed with succeeding in the things they do. This emotion can cause such discomfort for people that they can freeze in key moments when they should be at the top of their game. Not to mention the depression some people experience when they come in contact with the images of people that exist on social media. There is a lot in being successful that we put under the carpet, or we just consider it as part of the game, something that we should bear. It does not have to be that way.

Sharing Success

People are made to be in a group and therefore everything they do they should do for each other; however, this fact of human existence has also been a breeding ground for nationalism and other group-oriented ideologies that made the 20 th century so dark. The striving to be successful, the best, the most dominant will make people perform incredible and inspiring things but it will also make them give legitimacy to the worst monstrosities. How do we draw the line between the good and bad aspect of wanting individual and collective success?

Maybe we should stop looking at success as part of domination and make it part of what makes us authentic as human beings. What do I mean? If we start celebrating everyday people when they express themselves or make something that is fulfilling for them and makes other people grow we will support others to develop this aspect of their humanity and not concentrate on domination and subordination. We should support the celebration of collective endeavors that strive to enhance the human race as a whole and not adore individual examples as if they were the meaning of life.

The secret to success is not in money and fame, but in reaching that feeling of fulfillment when you know you have accomplished something that truly matters to you and other people around you. Dreaming big and then having it, it’s not impossible.

If you’ve been feeling a little low lately, this essay on success is sure to boost your motivation levels and set the goals right for you! We hear about so many successful people from all the areas. Some of them may be our favorite singers, actors, scientists, writers, social workers, politicians, and what not. Their achievements inspire the hearts of many and urge them to do better.

While we tend to focus on the sensation of the final outcome, the journey toward the goal is what matters the most. Sadly, human nature forces us to look at everything through the eyes of instant gratification. But the stories of success are not created overnight. In real life, any small big achievement demands tons of efforts and sacrifices.

If success is a building, consider each effort to be a brick, that has to be put in day and night tirelessly. Dreaming about achieving a goal in life is a lovely idea. Nonetheless, working on it every day is more than just a fantasy. You have to make it happen.

Do you pray or meditate? What happens at that moment? You sit quietly and focus all your attention and energy into the prayer or in watching those thoughts. Prayer commands sincerity. True worshipping is when the heart is pure and honest.

In the same way, success is a conscientious phenomenon. It asks for dedication and ethical diligence. For a real success, there are no shortcuts and there is no quitting too! Yes, we all get tired and hopeless. That doesn’t mean we have to give in to those feelings and quit. Keep working no matter what!

At times, when you feel that you can’t go on anymore, take a break. Rejuvenate yourself, talk to your loved ones, rest a lot, create a fresh perspective. And come back again with a greater force and zeal. You never know when the efforts will turn into the sweet fruits of success. One thing common in all the great personalities was that they never quit!

Personal Definition of Success

There is no fixed definition of success. You see, success is quite a relative term and its meaning changes from one person to another. However, it is sure to say that being able to feel content with your life and achieve what you dreamed of, is what makes you a successful person!

A prosperous life is not strictly about having all the materialistic comforts around. To some extent, this may be true. But, all in all, it’s only a microscopic way to measure someone’s success.

Let us introduce you to some of the most powerful quotes on success given by the different eminent personalities.

Everybody’s favorite, the great feminist and poetess, Maya Angelou says, “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

Winston Churchill quotes it as, “Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.”

Not to mention, America’s former first lady, Michelle Obama who expresses her own views on success. According to her, “Success isn’t about how much money you make. It’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.”

In the words of Albert Einstein, “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.”

Anne Sweeney, who remained the president of the Disney Channel from 1996 to 2014. In her words, “Define success on your own terms, achieve it by your own rules, and build a life you’re proud to live.”

It is evident enough how these miraculous and charismatic visionaries have described success in various terms and that there is no particular way to define it. The only authentic parameter should be your own satisfaction and happiness.

What is Success

We have understood that success is an abstract notion. Now, it is time to get to the bottom and explore some basic questions about it. Have you ever tried to inquire into what success means to you? What are the things that would make you convinced that you are a successful person now? Does your heart yearn for fame, money, peace, joy, love, or something else?

These questions are crucial. They make your mind clear and set your priorities more effectively. Always remember that a virtue that appeals to you may not mean the same to another person. Everybody has their own preferences and goals in life.

The bottom line is regardless of what the goal is, we can each be successful in our lives as long as the achievement makes us happy and content. It could be your education, a well-paying job, having a loving family, social security, or freedom to live the way you want to.

Anything, no matter how small or big, that fills us with a sense of purpose and gratifies the heart leads to success. If you are a happy person and love your life, then success is yours! For a long time, our minds have been trained to believe that money is the greatest source of joy. However, it’s not true!

Undoubtedly, wealth is a strong means to create comfort and security for us. But if it was the only thing needed for success, why do the richest people still deal with depression, anxiety, fears, and failures? Have you ever thought about it?

Physical wealth does not guarantee an insusceptibility to dissatisfaction and failure. Thinking otherwise would only create a bottomless void within you. People madly run after money and career. And yet when they are well-established, they still may not feel the joy and peace within. What is the missing piece in their lives?

Success in Life

Life is a rollercoaster, isn’t it! We all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Overcoming your flaws and frailty is a victory in itself. If you are thinking of coming out as a winner in life, don’t confine yourself to monetary values. With money, you may feel “technically” rich and yet have no access to the truest joy.

There are many dimensions to success. But everything depends upon our ability to recognize them. What are these dimensions, by the way! Let us explore a few of them.

You must have heard the famous quote, “Health is Wealth”. We need to understand the hidden value of this quote today more than ever. Ask yourself, if you would be able to enjoy anything in the same way if you were suffering from an acute or chronic illness? No, but such physical ailments are a bitter truth to many. To these people, achieving a partial or full recovery, having a long and respectful life is a success.

For the emotional souls, having their loved ones around, giving them a quality life, and taking care of them is what counts as the real victory. A person who cares about the whole society, for him/ her the true meaning of succeeding would be providing the basic amenities to the underprivileged, fighting for human rights, or creating awareness.

And yes, the biggest of the aims could be as simple and meaningful as leading a peaceful life. It could be about not having regrets and ill feelings toward others. They could also be as big as winning a gold medal in the Olympics, breaking the stereotypes, getting out of a toxic relationship and having a stable life.

The point is, success cannot be put into a singular category. And comparing one’s goal with the other person would be like comparing apple to an orange, or fruits to vegetables. Each person is unique. Their journey of life is different and so are their goals and parameters of success.

Success for Students

The keys to successful academic life are open secrets. As a student, your progress depends on the level of self-discipline, dedication, and hard work. If you are able to pull off these habits in long-term success would never leave you. Right? Nonetheless, the matter is not so simple.

In today’s time, students are looking for “success” more desperately than ever! Considering the cut-throat competitions, it is quite understandable also. The pressure of family’s expectations makes things even more complicated. The students have no option except to excel in their studies, but at what costs?

First of all, academic success is dependent on a limited number of subjects. The true potential of a child or a young one cannot be fairly measured based on such a narrow line. Moreover, somehow we have come to believe that excellent grades are a must for a student’s survival in this world. Fortunately, that’s not completely correct.

The practical life is much more than a few subjects. Most of the things we learn at school and colleges are plain theories. The bookish knowledge hardly proves to be of any help in the real world. What makes you rich is the experiences you gain on a daily basis.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that grades and books shouldn’t be taken seriously at all. You need to understand that these things play a partial role in forming the ladder of success. The better word to focus on would be ‘growth’.

If winning the race and grabbing a seat in some reputed college takes a toll on your mental, physical, and psychological health, then, we are seriously doing something wrong here. After all, these are the same factors leading to the rising number of suicides among the youths.

Not getting good marks doesn’t mean that you are not good enough for anything. It just means that you haven’t explored everything yet. There are many great personalities like Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, J.K. Rowling, who were a failure on the scales of conventional methods. But they proved everyone wrong.

All you need to remember is that never lose faith in yourself. If you really love what you do and consistently pour all of your energy into that task, then, definitely success is waiting for you! Make a routine of your choice and follow it religiously. Stay punctual. Fix your eyes on the goal and keep working.

Success and Hard Work

You can only work hard when you are fit overall. A good health is not just about having a strong body but also a strong mind and willpower. For all these things, you need energy. So, pay attention to things that you are feeding to your sensory organs. This includes from the proper diet to releasing stress, stay positive, working out, having those around who believe in you.

Don’t just work hard on your curriculum only. Take charge of other aspects too. As much as possible, include healthy foods in the diet. Staying positive induces good hormones in the body and the effect clearly shows in your performance. To strengthen your mental health, meditate every day.

Sitting around greenery, talking to your loved ones, reading positive books, are some of the other ways to replenish your energy levels. Make sure to work out every day, or at least go for a 30-minutes walk. Keep yourself hydrated. Drink plenty of water and other fluids.

Apart from focusing on the positive steps, be careful of the negative factors too. For instance, any negative conversation or toxic people in your life may suck away all your energy and charm. Try your best to avoid these triggers. Not only that, distractions like television, online chats, social media, parties, etc. should not be underestimated.

Keep your body and mind clean like a temple. It will help you work harder and with more effectiveness. There are no shortcuts to success. However, prefer to work smart rather than work hard. Never ever neglect the amount of sleep you get. There is no substitute for proper sleep.

Lack of sleep makes you cranky. Your concentration and memory become poorer. The learning becomes slower. So, a million dollar advice would be to get sufficient sleep, that means up to 8-10 hours. A few hours may be up and down depending on the person’s body requirements.

It is okay if the hard work makes you tired. However, the whole idea of hard work should not suffocate you. They say that if you love what you do, you don’t have to work a day in your life! If the set goals don’t well-align with your heart, explore something that does. Your goals should be set by you and not anyone else.

Success and Failure

Do you fear failure? What is the definition of failure according to you? How important is a failure for success? Let us find some answers to these amazing questions and doubts that we all face within us. To make things easier, here are a few great quotes for you!

“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” – Robert F. Kennedy

“Giving up is the only sure way to fail.” – Gena Showalter

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” – Thomas A. Edison

Must have changed your perspective a bit! Well, it won’t be wrong to say that failure is a part of success. It is an inevitable part of that process. Like two sides of a coin. You cannot expect to taste success until you have learned to embrace the failures.

There is an interesting story about it with a strong message. There used to live a guy who owned a grand and luxurious car. That car always stayed inside the house. The man never drove it. One day, one of his friends visited him and asked the reason for not taking the car out on the road.

Do you know what the man replied? He said that he would take the car out when all the traffic lights are green. He was waiting for an impossible thing to happen! Can you believe that? It’s ironic but yes, we all do the same metaphorically.

When we don’t take steps due to the fear of failure, subconsciously, we are waiting for everything to be perfect. So perfect that there would be no tiny scope for failing. That means there would be no red lights at all. How is that even possible!

Leave the fear of failure behind. The only thing you should be scared of is not making efforts. Because that kills even the slightest chance of success. Be humble and embrace failure. Learn from your mistakes. These lessons are valuable. No book would teach you the way your experiences will.

Success is a cumulative and relative term. Without peace and love, money and fame don’t count as success. True success would satiate your soul. It would fill your life with joy. Shrug off the idea of comparing your life with someone else’s. Every person follows a different path and journey. That is why the meaning of success also varies from one individual to another.

No matter how difficult or impossible seems the goal, never quit. Keep working and one day you would succeed. Don’t confine your ambitions to just making money. Listen to your heart and follow it. The voices within us are our guiding lights!

Try to be a good person before becoming a successful person. Only an individual who has earned the love and respect of all has achieved the truest success.

Embrace Possibility 30 Qualities that Make Ordinary People Extraordinary

30 Qualities that Make Ordinary People Extraordinary

essay on qualities required for success

Success comes in many ways and forms. What's interesting is that most successful people have very similar qualities.

When I read lists such as this one, I want to see how I stack up against it. It feels good when I recognize the qualities of success in myself. For the qualities that I don't have, lists like these tell me what I need to work on.

I have enjoyed and benefited much from these types of lists and that's why I decided to organize all my research, observations, and experience and compile this comprehensive list.

If you want to achieve your life's dream and be wildly successful, you need to model yourself after people who are living their dream. The more qualities you have in common, the higher your chances for being wildly successful.

"Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; actions form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny." - Tryon Edwards

We all start out in life as being quite ordinary and many remain that way. The few who have become extraordinary have these qualities (no specific order):

1.  Definite Aim, Vision and Purpose  - Successful people constantly seek clarity in their lives. They know what they want and they follow their own dream. Vague desires and beliefs lead to vague outcomes. It is this sense of direction that gives them the staying power to  stick to their goals  and achieve their dreams.

2.   Expertise and Excellence  - No matter what they pursue, they become the best in their field. There is no job too small and successful people strive for excellence. They pursue mastery and understand that money is a by-product of the value they offer.

3.   Focused  - People who experience success know how to concentrate. They realize that they cannot do everything and they focus on the activities that will give them the highest return on the goals they want to achieve. They don't believe in the hype of multi-tasking and they know that the fastest way to finish your to-do's is doing them one at a time .

4.   Positive Attitude and Perseverance  - Extraordinary people have realistic optimism. Realistic because they take action and optimistic because no matter what the result may be, they believe their success is inevitable. They believe that  like a child learning to walk , they need to take action first and then modify the action according to the feedback that they get. This positive attitude allows them to persevere and be resilient when things don't go their way.

5.  Flexible - One misconception that ordinary people have about persevering is staying the course no matter what. This is true only if the reason for pursuing your goal is still valid. Most successful people achieved success doing something different from what they initially intended to do (Example: Steve Jobs started with computers, went into the animation, and really made his comeback with the iPod). This makes sense because the world is always changing and they know a lot more now than when they started. Successful people know that if their reasons for doing what they are doing changes, there is no point to continue.

6.  Masters of Time - Successful people are successful because they get a lot done. The only way to do that is by making the most out of the allotted 24 hours we all get. Extraordinary people value their time and see the direct connection between how they spend their time and their energy . They are usually always on time  and "train" those that deal with them to respect their schedule by implementing strict start and end times for meetings.

7.  Strong Communicators  - People who can communicate effectively excel in life. Strong communicators understand that just because people speak English (or the dominant language in your country), it does not mean they understand each other. What makes them effective is that they are clear about and sensitive to the outcome they want to get from their communication and are flexible in their method of communication to achieve their outcome. They are experts at  building rapport  and separate what is being said from the meaning they put into what is being said.

8.  Brave  - We've all heard the phrase "No risk. No reward." but how many of us really take the risk necessary to get the reward we want? Not many but for those who do, they are the ones who make it and become successful. Successful people have the courage to begin AND the courage to continue. They are willing to not only bet but go "all in" on themselves. They are not afraid to burn bridges if it means moving forward.

9.  Givers  - Successful people are generous givers. They know and are convinced of the "secret" that the more you give, the more you receive as long as you are genuine about your gifts. They operate on the principle embodied by Zig Ziglar's quote, " You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want. " If you haven't tapped into this secret, you should get started right away. Money isn't the only thing you can give. You can give time, expertise, space, etc. Look for ways to open doors for people .

10.  High Self-Esteem  - Extraordinary people believe they deserve their success and know that  they can do anything  they set their mind to. They understand that a mistake is something that they do and not who they are. They also monitor the  warning signs of low self-esteem  to ensure they always keep a positive self-image of themselves. They realize that self-esteem is a state of mind and choosing to have high self-esteem is much more useful than choosing to have low self-esteem.

11.  Action-Oriented  - We all know of people who have potential or talk a big game but accomplishes nothing. Those who spend all their time thinking about doing something will never succeed. Successful people are doers and not talkers. They don't wait for conditions to be perfect before they take action. They just go for it, observe the feedback and then modify their next action accordingly. Those who don't achieve much with their lives tend to use "would", " should " and "could" a lot. Those who do get what they want are too busy achieving their next goal to explain themselves. If you suffer from procrastination, I encourage you to check out some practical ways to stop procrastinating .

12.  Confident  - This is what helps successful people take action. Like the chicken and the egg, confidence helps you achieve your goals which in turn makes you more confident. A great way to be confident is remembering your past successes and overcoming your  fear of failure . Signs of confidence include empowering others,  not taking criticism personally , and understanding that the first time you do something is always the hardest and all subsequent times WILL get easier. Success is the combination of confidence with competence.

13.  Readers - Most if not all successful people like to read. If you believe that success leaves clues and that you can be successful by thinking and acting like a successful person, then reading should be a part of your daily life. I've come to realize that with access to more books than I can read in several lifetimes, it is important to read the books that will make the most difference to you. Usually these are the books that will help you become a true expert in your field of your passion or challenge the limiting beliefs you have about yourself.

So what should you read? Check out book recommendations from people who are doing what you want to do. Extraordinary people are life long learners who view mastery as an  asymptote  that they keep getting closer to but can never reach.

14.  Trusts Intuition - People who succeed in life trust their "gut". They may not be able to explain rationally why or how they made their decision but they knew it was the right thing to do. Successful people learn to harness the power of their subconscious by sending it "orders" from the conscious mind. This involves mentally visualizing the outcome beforehand and then being present to take in the data and information that will become the ingredients for your subconscious to deliver the "orders" that were sent. Learning  how to meditate  is also a great way to develop and get in touch with your intuition.

15.  Curious and Embraces Possibility - Two people are running a race and they come up to an immense wall blocking their path. One person sees the wall and starts getting down on himself for wasting his time and decides to quit the race before he wastes even more time. The other person immediately thinks about what the possibilities are for getting over the wall. Will he/she climb it, break through it, dig under it, etc? No matter which option he/she chooses, he/she immediately acts on their decision and collects feedback. Successful people adopt an attitude of curiosity and they truly feel that they can always learn something from someone else. They incorporate the great qualities of others while making a point to avoid the bad qualities.

16.  Self Acceptance - Polonius had it exactly right when he said: " To thine own self be true ". People who are successful don't pretend to be something they are not. This allows them to express their creativity freely and not worry about hiding who they really are. The best way to accept yourself is to genuinely appreciate and accept others. If you tend to judge other people, you're probably not very accepting of yourself either. The worse type of rejection is self-rejection.

17.  Big Dreams - I have yet to read a biography of a successful person who didn't have grand dreams for what they would accomplish. Sir Richard Branson, Walt Disney, and Sam Walton all had big dreams and for the most part, achieved more than they originally imagined. This is one of the reasons they became successful. They are not afraid to dream big and then go for it. If you want to know whether someone will be successful, ask them about their dreams. If they sound plausible, then they are not dreaming big enough.

18.  Well Rounded and Balanced - Truly successful people strive to be successful in all aspects of their lives. They live healthy lives, become financially independent, nurture meaningful relationships, develop personal mastery , and accomplish their professional goals. They know that sacrificing one key area to achieve another will not help them maximize their true potential. It is hard to be your best and to contribute when you have to worry about how you are going to pay the rent.

19.  Excellent Network  - Successful people understand the importance of relationships and how it is one of the most important factors in achieving your goals. They also realize that the best way to build a great network is to give help to others first with no expectation of reward. Those who constantly take without giving usually do very poorly on building a solid network.

20.  Enthusiastic  - A sure sign of someone extraordinary is the enthusiasm they have about their passion and their life. They wake up in the morning excited about their day because they know it is going to bring them one step closer to achieving their dream. Successful people tend to be leaders because others are attracted to their enthusiasm and become followers hoping to experience the same excitement and energy.

21.  Admits Mistakes - There are two things you can do to guarantee that you will NOT be successful in the future: Blaming Others and Making Excuses . When you do these two things, you give up both your responsibility and power. When something goes wrong and you blame other people or make excuses, you are clearly stating that you have no power in this situation and things are happening to you and not because of you. Great people admit when they are wrong so they can focus on the solution and not waste energy finding a scapegoat. Check out what Albert Einstein can teach us about setbacks .

22.  Mindset of Abundance - Successful people don't view happiness or success as a finite resource where achieving happiness and success for yourself means denying someone else happiness and success. They believe that there is enough to go around and it is more about creating value and not competition. This is the quality that allows them to be happy for other people's successes. This mindset also encourages the empowerment of others. If you think $10,000 is a lot to spend on a hotel room, check out this article by Steve Pavlina .

23.  Good Character - Heroes are people who triumph. Think of all the heroes you know (in movies, books, and real-life). Don't they all act with honesty and integrity? Aren't they usually generous with others and frugal with themselves? Doesn't everyone look up to them? Being a hero that triumphs in life is no different.

24.  Great Company - As I get older, I've come to recognize that you can learn a lot about someone by the company that they keep. Test this idea by watching people you know and noting who they spend the most time with. Some say a person's salary is usually the average of the five people they hang out with the most.

This happens because people with similar beliefs tend to get along and stick together. If a group averages $65,000/year and someone in the group believes that they can make $65,000/hour, the other people in the group will think that is ridiculous. Yet in the group where everyone makes $65,000/hour, the person making $65,000/year will probably second guess his or her own beliefs concerning earning ability.

What does that mean for you?

Surround yourself with people living the life you want to live and adopt their beliefs and habits. This might mean spending less time with the people you've outgrown .

25.  Listener  - Everyone wants to be a great speaker but how many people strive to be excellent listeners. People who listen succeed in life because they are able to hear and understand the needs of other people and to focus their energy on meeting those needs. The fastest way to be a good conversationalist is to listen well and ask questions.

26.  Self Control - Successful people rarely lose control. They don't go into panics or blind rages. They have learned to control their emotions and consciously (or subconsciously) put themselves in a resourceful state. They understand that they can't change other people or what's happening to them but they can change how they react to it and how they feel about it . Another sign of self-control is doing what you're supposed to do despite how you feel about it .

27.  Prepared - Extraordinary people are always prepared. They not only have a plan B but also a Plan C, D, E, and F. They mentally rehearse and visualize the possibilities vividly so that when the actual situation occurs, their brains will "remember" what to do.

28.  Choice  - People who are successful are in control. They know they ALWAYS have a choice. They don't feel victimized by their genetics, history and/or circumstances and they truly believe that the past does not determine the future. They write the script to their lives.

29.  Self Reliant  - Successful people rely on themselves. They don't need permission to do what they want and they don't give other people permission to slow them down by relying on them. They believe in themselves and their ability to achieve their dreams whether anyone helps them or not. What's interesting is that it is exactly this type of attitude that attracts others to want to help you. Samuel Smiles writes about this exact topic in his book, Self-Help (pdf) .

30. Energy Conscious - Those who become great understand that successfully managing their energy is just as important if not more so than managing their time (Quality #6). One of the most important principles in energy management is knowing that rest is as important as action. Successful people are aware that low energy produces poor results and this violates their need for excellence (Quality #2). One of the best ways to manage your energy is to sleep your way to success .

So where do you stand?

I hope you have either reconfirmed many of your own qualities or have created action plans to develop the qualities you are lacking. Focus on cultivating one or two qualities at a time. Once your beliefs and actions are aligned with those of a successful person, you'll be amazed by how successful you become.

Bookmark and review this list often to measure yourself against it . Use it as a checklist knowing that the more qualities that you have, the higher your likelihood of being wildly successful in whatever you pursue. If you found this list helpful, share it with others who can benefit from it.

Which one of these building blocks of success do you want to develop? Are there any qualities of success that I left off that should be included in this list?

Also, if you've read this far, you obviously care about your development. To support your efforts, you can access the paid-version of my Know What You Want Workshop free. Just register using this code: robertsentme

I am a mother, in my late twenties, with four children. One of my child went through liver transplantation. So I have to put an extra eye on her. I could not continue my education after high school. Now I want to find a road to higher education and build up my career. I am a citizen of a third world country where there is no scope for mature students. I don’t have enough money to get degrees from countries like USA, UK or Canada where there are numerous options for mature students. Pls advice me on few things:

What steps should I take at this moment?

I am interested in Science and Medicine. Is it possible to build up career in these fields? If I focus on business, which subjects should be on the top of my priority list? Please suggest any other subject which you think might be good for me at this stage.

Is it possible if to get financial support for my education and my child’s treatment from organizations like Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation? Can they arrange for my education in the US?

I have been told to try for Canadian immigration, but now it has become very hard to get one.

If the Almighty wants, it will be very helpful if you suggest me about how I can accomplish my goals.

Thank you. Student.

Hi Student,

The first thing I suggest is to clarify what you want. What is the reason for getting higher education? Why do you want a degree?

I know there are many websites out there that offer free high quality courses: http://www.coursera.org , http://www.udemy.com , http://www.openculture.com/freeonlinecourses

As for your child’s treatment, I really don’t know much about getting financial support but I’m sure if you contact different foundations they will be able to guide you.

I hope this helps and good luck to you.

hi Robert Chen, I am a student, you can help me some idea by this Essay.

some think that the qualities of truly successful people cannot be learnt at university of any academic institutions, to what extent do you agree/ disagree with this idea?

thank you so much student.

Most universities don’t teach the skills needed for success. It can be taught but like all skills, it needs to be practiced. Also, many academic institutions stop at theory. That is why most people feel that you can’t learn success qualities in universities.

This is pretty good, but I do not agree that a group that makes $65,000 an hour would ridicule a person making less. Good leaders are willing to help others. Small minds are the ones who try to hold others down.

You’re absolutely right that good leaders (and great people in general) are the ones who lift people up and serve others along with the other qualities on this list. At the same time, it is also possible for small-minded people to make $65,000/hour although highly unlikely. Perhaps ridicule may not be the best of words to use. Thank you for bringing it to my attention and for your comment.

Holy shit. This is awesome. You know what I love most about this? I can totally do this. Heck, I AM doing this. Really. You are describing me. Sure I have two little kids and I work part-time, but when my baby wakes in the middle of the night, I’m reading good books or brilliant blogs. When I’m walking to the playground, I’m thinking about writing and jotting ideas on my phone. Not trying to brag of anything. :) But if I can do all this stuff, then definitely anybody can. Love this. http://indresult.com

Excellent! Your list is really helpful and praiseworthy.

Thanks Tazneen!

I have a big dream. But I become afraid when I think about my present situation and my society.I am a 20 years old Bangladeshi girl. My dream can have a clash with my social status .I want not only to fulfill my dream but also to have a happy life with the people whom I love. Can you tell me how can I overcome this fear and have a balanced life without sacrificing my personal happiness?

It is easy to think of life as “either-or” that always forces you to choose. I encourage you to think about your dream and what is it about the dream that you really want. Sometimes you can have a different manifestation of your desire that doesn’t force you to sacrifice. There are many paths – choose the one that allows you to have both.

Great Kien .. Such an appreciable acronym..

' data-srcset=

Great list. I will add from my executive coaching experience with high flying leaders: INITIATIVE – their primary mode of function is to initiate and create action-they are creative and a source for movement. Also, RELATIONSHIPS ACUMEN – they are experts at understanding, connecting, and moving people through a change and growth process. They have relational resonance.

Thanks Anne for adding these two important attributes. Taking action is key to bringing ideas into reality and “relational resonance” brings together the people who will help you execute your plan.

' data-srcset=

A great list ! Thanks, Robert :)

Thank Yen – which quality resonated with you?

Mr Chen this is simply a Fantastic list. As a young man(22) I’ve been identifying qualities i want to add to my own to grow into a Great Man, a Real Man. As I’ve grown I’ve seen were forced to be around different people with different beliefs everyday (e.g work, school), and the quality of those people really affects your way of thought. Over time you begin to question your own beliefs. E.g, The most outspoken Girl at work constantly goes on about how important a guy with money is (over personality and looks), Now 2 years ago i would’ve felt real bad for not being rich and believed I’d never get a girl but thankfully I’ve dated much Prettier, intelligent, successful women than her ,i know first hand a quality relationship has much more to it than Bank account figures (Personality really matters guys). My point being if you as a human being, do not have a set of qualities that you stand by, you’ll be strayed away from what you believe in and most importantly who you “truly” want to be. My goal is to be an independent , individual with qualities and beliefs I’ve assessed for myself to be what i want. Some people may not necessarily like them but as long as I’m happy and confident with who i am then I’ve succeeded. Not only is this a great list but you’ve put qualities that are so important eg ,Giving, helping, triumph, bravery.. keep up the good work sir,

Thanks LJK – you’re on point with this comment. It’s important to have a set of qualities and beliefs that you stand by or else you do become easily swayed by the beliefs of those around you. Thank you for sharing.

' data-srcset=

Hi robert, im 17 and love your posts. They really inspire me to become as successful as i can be. I’m in the process of changing my life around and hope to become successful in “all aspects of my life” Thanks for the post, I hope to see more in the future.

Thanks Jayden – I’m glad you find the posts helpful and it’s great that you’re starting at such a young age to live the life you want.

Robert , You happen to be a great inspirational writer. This article was off the charts. And I’m just a 15 year old but still I felt like my dreams have come true. I admire it that you have taken time to help people and move them closer to their goals. These qualities are truly the qualities everybody wishes to possess. I’m very much motivated by fictional characters and dream of things others would consider out of the bounds, but when I happen to interact with people like you, It seems as it’s all possible. And that’s it, you have achieved what you intented to awaken among the masses. Thanking you for this wonderful article, You have inspired me, a thing only a few can do. Wish you a happy and healthy life.

Thank you for your kind words Anantim. To find value in these qualities at your age is a sign that you’ll do something great with your life. I look forward to seeing and hearing all about it. All the best to you!

tried these things, many times but nothing works isnt there a simple way and helps in determination &focus also

Thanks for your comment prajwal – I see these as qualities to cultivate for life so I’m not sure what “nothing works” means in your comment. As for developing determination and focus, I would check out essentialism by Greg mckeown.

hi Mr. Robert Chen,I am from India and i read in class 9 and i want to be I.A.S officer from science and maths so how many hours i have to study please could you make a chart for me. I will be blessed for you. I am waiting for your comment.

Hi Ayush – great that you’re looking to plan ahead. I would recommend working with your teachers to come up with a study plan to achieve your goal. I’m not familiar with your curriculum to be helpful. Good luck!

' data-srcset=

Sir Happiness and success in life is a related thing or different

Manzoor – I think it depends on how you define success. It could be the same thing if you define it that way.

' data-srcset=

Hey Robert,

I read this list and while I found it very useful, I was also a bit overwhelmed with all the 30 qualities. What are the top 1-3 qualities you would say in your own experience? Thanks

Hi Mayo – it can be overwhelming to cultivate all the qualities at once. Your inclination to narrow it down to 1-3 is a good one. I believe all 30 have their merits and you have the choose the one most impactful for achieving the goals you’ve set for yourself. Ideally, you want to cultivate all of these qualities. If you had to start somewhere, I would make sure you get clear on your aim and mission in life as that will direct your efforts and help you to make decisions for your time and energy.

' data-srcset=

This was a well put together list, and I found it interesting as I read each one how different aspects of life, professional, community, parenting, sprung to mind! I will have to make a note to reread this article quarterly, i have slacked off on a few as I’ve enjoyed successes in various areas. During a time of transition now I will also have to concentrate on a few that I can feel faltering now as well. Thank you!

Thank you Stephanie – best of luck to you and great tip to review quarterly.

' data-srcset=

Thank you for your rich compilation. I must commend you on focusing on the small and yet powerful traits that can potentially help accelerate our pace to success. I have practicing some, and I must confess the results were immense

Thank you Nsamba and great to hear that you’re seeing the results of your hard work!

Dear Robert .. I’m highly impressed with the points .. Uh have stated there in the article .. All these points are working for me as a seperate tutor .. But I want to get acquainted with your viewpoint about 1 thing .. i.e. at what extent a religious nature helps in getting success ..?? Thank you..

Thank you Karan – your question is an interesting one. Based on what you’ve read and your own experience, what are your thoughts?

' data-srcset=

Love to read about the lack of multi-tasking, which is an ever so important choice in our modern lifes. I recently published an article about the youths behind Forbes 30 Under 30 ( http://www.market-inspector.co.uk/blog/2016/03/all-facts-revealed-how-to-become-a-forbes-30-under-30 ) – some truly successful people that are yet in the start of their careers.

One thing that many of them seem to have in common, when we asked them, was that exercise is highly prioritized – and as this blog post tells – many of them likes to read!

Thanks for sharing your insights Karolina

' data-srcset=

Wow, this is a great list. However, we can’t adopt and follow all. But we can do our best to get aspiration from successful people, right? Your list basically covers all.. :)

Thanks Shawn – we are all a work in progress.

' data-srcset=

Great stuff. I can attest to the veracity of the noted traits contributing to overall success, financially, spiritually, emotionally and interpersonally.

If there were any single improvement suggestion I might offer, it’s that the importance of perspective/balance in developing the traits/habits noted would provide an element of context that would help make the ideas offered more actionable. For example, I think the discussion about trusting one’s gut can be improved by making at least a passing nod to the idea that successful people don’t merely trust their intuition absent strong evidence for doing so. Ignorantly going with one’s gut — that is, doing so merely because one has no clue of what else one might do or of any other way to proceed — is unlikely to consistently result in a positive outcome.

Barrack Obama recently said, “It’s not cool to not know what you’re talking about.” Well, it’s equally uncool, moreover unwise, to not know what one is doing, how and why. Absent balance in one’s understanding of that point, literalists may well think that going with their gut is okay, sage even. For many of those people, their gut is the one thing they shouldn’t go with.

Great reminder Tony to think and act for yourself. It’s key to know why you’re doing something and it shouldn’t be because someone else says so. Thanks Tony!

Hi Robert Chen!I am an undergraduate student and have recently gone through your remarkable essay…first of all thanks for the guidance..but if u don’t really mind shall I know why didn’t u mention facing challenges as a trait as well?

Thank you Amy – you bring up a great question. I think the ability to face challenges is an important one. I approached this article as the qualities you’ll need to succeed and these qualities will include the ones you need to face challenges.

For example, to face challenges, you’ll need quality #4 and 11 – positive attitude, perseverance and action orientation.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comments. I am going to have to leave it up to you to find those women role models who are missing from your on line material. I am 63 years old and I don’t do social media. But you could post my comments on on my behalf.

Also you or someone you know and trust could spend just a few minutes on goggle and find examples of those amazing women. Biologist Rachel Carson who took on the pesticide companies on her landmark book Silent Spring, scientist Rosalie Bertell, a catholic nun who made the link between exposure to low levels of radiation and cancer and Karen Silkwood chemical technician and union activist who many suspect was murdered when she tried to make public documents that proved the company she worked for was exposing workers to multiple workplace hazards. Oh lordy there are many, many examples. Eleanor Roosevelt, Michelle Obama, Bonnie Raitt, Amelia Earhart … surely you could find some female role models.

I am too busy with my garden and building a house to do much more on this topic. I wish you the very best in your endeavors. You are on a positive path to assist humanity to make this a better planet and hopefully will a better job of it than my generation from the 1960’s (although we did give it a good effort).

I want to succeed one day. I also think that it is very important to be positive attitude and perseverance. This article is very helpful for aspiring person like me . Thanks for sharing this article.

Thanks Lauren – you’re right. A positive attitude and perseverance are important. Your comment reminds me of the following quote from former US President Calvin Coolidge:

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

Great article by Great person! Motivated by reading this article.. Please make some more article related to this topic.

Thanks Shivansh!

Such a great article. I can relate and agree to all the qualities above, except one: well-rounded and balanced. I know that success comes in many forms and ways, but most of the time, trying to be well-rounded and balanced is what makes you ordinary, not extraordinary. Just my opinion. I enjoy your list a lot :)

Great point Shawn – we all have limits to our time and energy, so how we spread that out matters in terms of the results we get. I also agree in general it is important to focus on a few things so you put in the work to stand out. When I think about well-rounded and balance, I see it less about watering things down and moving towards the average, and more about maximizing the important areas in your life. For example, if you have great relationships, an awesome career, and fantastic health, that would be quite extraordinary. Also, it may be hard to be financially free if you don’t have a thriving professional life or great health. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts!

' data-srcset=

I hope I have at least 10 of these qualities. I can’t assess myself objectively, but I think I definitely need to work on self-acceptance and what kind of listener I am. Here is another motivational article about the qualities of a successful person: https://leadgrowdevelop.com/8-qualities-lead-success-5minmotivation/ Definitely worth a look. Thank you! Your texts and insights are always informative.

Robert Hi, not sure if it is still open for comments but this article and your entire website and initiative, excellent. What I liked the most, is that differently from most articles which just lists qualities, yours describe in a way it is easy to understand how to implement that quality in our daily lives. I`m currently having to make a decision, take a big step, and through your article I identified a few things as for example that being away from my family, is a sacrifice that doesn’t empower me towards my path (it is way more than that), but #18, well rounded and balanced, + the 2 years pandemics, gave me a new perspective how family is a wonderful support for our dreams. Congrats. You are truly helping people!! Already sent to my 21 niece, so she knows it at an early age!!

Thanks so much for this thoughtful comment Gloria – I’m glad you found this article helpful. I hope your niece enjoys the ideas as well.

Qualities of a Successful Person Essay Example

Qualities of a Successful Person Essay Example

  • Pages: 2 (370 words)
  • Published: January 19, 2017
  • Type: Essay

What are the necessary qualities of a successful person in modern society? Explain why specific qualities are essential to achieve success? Modern society requires high standarts and preparation. Being a successful person and making this success last in this society is not easy. Eventhough the ‘definition’ of success varies from a profession to another, there are some essential qualities that should be present in every successful person. The first quality is persistence. When someone knows what he really wants, he should focus on this goal and be commited to achieve it.

For example: If the goal is: to get a promotion, the person must work hard everyday. Even if this person doesn’t get the promotion the first time,, it’s important not to let go, to focus even more, to work even harder. The second qual

ity of a successful person is self-confidence. It’s important for someone to belive that Yes, he/she can do it! The third important quality is flexibility. A person should be able to adapt himself to the constant changing demands of the environment.

To illustrate: If technology in the workplace changes, the employee should learn how to use the new technology in order to increase his productivity at work, or if the CEO changes and new procedures are applied, a seccessful person is the one who gets used quicker with the new way the company is operating. Another essantial quality is knowledge. A person should be very knowledgeable in his profession. If you’re an academic, perhaps deep knowledge of the subject is the only required quality to be successful and well-known.

What is more, a person who wants

to be successful must know how to effectively communicate with the others. Very good communication skills can even make a person charismatic, and this is especially important in jobs that involve working and being in touch with a lot of people. Last, a little bit of scepticism must be present. To summerize, persistence, self-confidence, flexibility, knowledge and effective communication are some of the traits that a person who wants to be successful should have. There are many ways that lead to success and if someone has all these qualities, he will surely find his way.

How to Be Successful in College: 9 Tips

Recognizing your values, building SMART goals, and knowing your learning style can help put you on the path to success in college.

[Featured image] A group of six students sitting outside on a tiered brick stadium seating holding coffees, notebooks, and laptops, all smiling and looking toward a professor off-camera.

The secret to success in college is remembering that the idea of success is relative. Because we all have different priorities, goals, and values, your success can look quite different from your classmate’s success, and still both of you can be equally successful.

Whether you’re a full-time student on campus, or a nontraditional student balancing coursework with a job, family, or other commitments, being successful in college is within your reach. Here are nine tips to help you achieve your goals :

Know your goals and values.

Turn long-term goals into short-term plans.

Go to class and attend office hours.

Build skills relevant to your coursework.

Assess your learning style.

Try new things.

Maintain a social balance.

Manage your time with intention.

Take care of your health.

Let's take a closer look at how you might approach each of these tips.

How to succeed in college

As you read through these tips, keep in mind that you can take what resonates, leave what doesn’t, and come back to areas that you want to revisit down the line. There’s no “right” path to success—only the right path for you, and you get to decide what that path looks like.

1. Know your goals and values.

Acknowledging your goals can be one way to visualize your version of success. Recognizing what it is that you are trying to achieve by pursuing an education can help illuminate your values, and you can use those values to motivate yourself as you work toward your idea of success.

For example, if your goal is to secure your bachelor’s degree in order to get a job, then you might note that you value independence and providing for yourself. Ultimately, your version of success might be to achieve independence.

Holding onto your values as you interpret your success might help you stay focused on your individual version of success and avoid falling into comparison traps.

Understanding your goals with powerful questions

If you’re having trouble figuring out your goals and values, try asking yourself some powerful questions . Powerful questions can invite exploration and provoke deeper thought. The key is to be honest with yourself and remove judgment. Some examples of powerful questions you might ask yourself are:

- What do I want to get out of college?

- What am I trying to achieve?

2. Turn long-term goals into short-term plans.

Now that you have an idea of what success looks like for you, you can start translating your vision into an action plan. Action plans divide large goals into smaller, bite-size accomplishments. This helps make those large goals feel more approachable and gives you the opportunity to check in with yourself along the way.

One method to distill long-term goals into short-term plans is to create SMART goals. SMART is an acronym for:

Specific: Identify your task.

Measurable: Determine how you’ll measure your goal.

Achievable: Create realistic goals that you have some control over.

Relevant: Focus on goals that will guide you toward your idea of success.

Time-bound: Set a deadline for yourself to stay on task.

SMART goals can help you stay focused on achieving your ultimate goal in a manageable way.

So, if your long-term goal is to earn your college degree, consider the individual requirements you’ll need to meet in order to earn your degree. One of those requirements might include maintaining a particular minimum GPA. Create SMART goals based on elements you can control, such as the time you spend studying for a class, which can read like this:

“My goal is to start each weekday with one hour of additional study for the first three weeks of class.”

This goal can help guide you toward your target GPA by keeping you focused on one thing you can control: the amount of time you put into studying.

3. Go to class and attend office hours.

No matter your measure of success, one key aspect of achieving it is by showing up. In terms of academic success, showing up to class and during office hours can impact your overall success in a number of ways.

First, class is often the primary place of learning. If a professor is going to introduce a new topic, they’ll often detail that topic in class and may include information not covered in the textbook. Attendance is your best opportunity to get all of the information presented. At the very least, establishing yourself as a constant presence in the class can demonstrate to the professor that you care about doing well.

Take your relationship with your professors and advisors one step further by attending office hours. Many students use office hours to clarify confusing concepts, find out their grade, get advice on future career objectives, or simply socialize.

Professors and advisors have a wealth of knowledge—use that knowledge to move closer to your goals. And later, as you prepare for life after college, whether that involves grad school or applying for jobs, these are the people you might one day ask for a letter of recommendation .

4. Build skills relevant to your coursework.

As you work toward your degree, you may notice certain types of assignments coming up repeatedly. An English major may have to write a lot of essays, while a chemistry major may work through countless lab reports, and a math major may take sit-down exams that require memorizing complex equations.

If your measure of success involves academic achievement, you might consider honing those skills that you are most frequently tested on. Take note of how you might leverage your strengths, and try not to judge your perceived shortcomings. To help with your areas of improvement, your school or department might have other peer-review resources available to students, like writing workshops or group study sessions.

The benefit of sharpening your academic skills will likely extend after you acquire your degree: oftentimes, the skills that allow you to become academically successful in your major are also the skills that will show up as you pursue a career in a related field.

5. Assess your learning style.

Everyone’s brain processes information slightly differently. Figuring out how you learn best and the study habits that suit your learning style can help build confidence in your ability to succeed academically.

To help decipher when you work best, think about an exam or a paper you did well on. What did you do to prepare? What type of environment did you complete your work in? How long did you spend on the assignment? Did you study alone or with a group?

Study tips for people with ADD, ADHD, or other neurodiversity

Certain forms of neurodivergence can interrupt commonly suggested study tips. If you experience attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or any neurodiversity, you may benefit from additional study techniques. Here are some suggested tips [ 1 ]:

- Develop a routine

- Give yourself additional time to study

- Take breaks

- Rewrite notes

- Stay stimulated by writing in margins, highlighting  or reading out loud

- Keep up with a to do list

6. Try new things.

Academic success isn’t the only measure of success in college. You might want to use your time in school to learn something entirely new or pick up skills that aren’t fully explored in your other coursework.

If you value adventure and exploration, another measure of success might be experiential. Do you feel fulfilled by your coursework? Are you challenging yourself in exciting ways?

To benefit from the range of courses that your school has to offer, here and there, take classes that sound fun. Use your elective courses to broaden your horizons. Pick up a minor in a passion subject. It might do wonders for your brain, helping you overcome fears, stimulate creativity, and get to know new sides of yourself [ 2 ].

7. Maintain a social balance.

Along with academics and experiences, one more way you might measure success in college is according to your social life. One benefit of college is that you are surrounded by similarly minded people, who likely have some similar goals, even if their values and motivations are slightly different.

As you concurrently embark on your similar goals, you may want to consider how you can help each other achieve them. In the short-term, you might trade notes with a classmate or study together for exams.

Meanwhile, the associations you form in college study groups and by participating in clubs and co-curricular activities can evolve into lifelong partnerships. Years after graduating, you might lean on those relationships as you seek new job opportunities or consider other life changes.

8. Manage your time with intention.

Time management is a daily practice. When it comes to achieving success, use your goals to guide the way you manage your time by prioritizing the tasks that will keep you on your desired path.

Of course, it’s not always realistic to expect your priorities to easily align. Sometimes, life happens, and other days, procrastination can get the best of us. (One US survey of 2,219 people found that 88% of the workforce admitted to procrastinating at least one hour a day [ 3 ].) If you can, it might help to build time in your schedule to deal with the unexpected. Some people give themselves earlier due dates on major projects, while others might schedule a few hours a week to sit with their thoughts.

If you find yourself struggling to prioritize your college goals, consider whether your lifestyle and needs allow for you to achieve your goals in the way that you’re currently aiming to. Don’t shy away from a course correct: there are a lot of options when it comes to getting a college degree, and for some lifestyles, learning part-time or earning your degree online may be a more productive fit.

9. Take care of your health.

Above all, you can’t achieve success without taking care of yourself. Maintaining your mental and physical health are crucial to reaching your goals, regardless of what those goals entail. For example, a lack of sleep can disrupt your body’s ability to function [ 4 ].

If you are taking on responsibilities outside of the classroom, such as work or family obligations, finding balance among your academic and social pursuits can be challenging. Hold space for yourself to notice when you’re feeling off, reprioritize as needed, and seek professional help if necessary.

Achieving success in college

Reflective Essay Topic – Qualities Needed For Success

You can find Previous Year Reflective Essay Topics asked in ICSE board exams.

Introduction: Qualities needed for success

  • Perseverance and hard work
  • Keen sharp mind with vision and ambition
  • Patience and leadership qualities
  • Positive attitude

Conclusion: There is no short cut to success.

“If you wish to succeed in life, make perseverance your bosom friend, experience your wise counsellor, caution your elder brother and hope your guardian genius,” said Joseph Addison. These are indeed some basic qualities, required to be successful in life. People possessing these qualities, are successful in whatever they do, while others bear the ignominy of failure in almost all activities they indulge in. Success therefore does not come naturally, behind it is perseverance, experience, caution and a never say die attitude.

Success is indeed ninety nine percent perspiration and one percent inspiration. There are many rags to riches stories of people achieving great success, by sheer dint of hard work and determination. Abraham Lincoln and Lai Bahadur Shastri, rose from very humble beginning to become the President and the Prime Minister of their respective countries. Some of the richest businessmen like Dhirubhai Ambani and Bill Gates also came from very humble background. However their zeal and enthusiasm made them establish great business empires.

Such great men besides hard work and perseverance, also possess a keen and sharp mind, with a clear vision and goal they want to achieve in life. This ambition acted like a beacon of light, impelling them to relentlessly strive towards their goal. They also had the courage of conviction to move away from the beaten track and blaze a new trail for others to follow.

Besides the above qualities one must exercise caution and patience in dealing with problems. Just as a rolling stone gathers no moss, similarly rushing from one action to another without thinking of its implication gets one nowhere. There is therefore need to spend some time with the problem, seek the views of elders and peers, use past experience, before coming to a decision. Decision once taken must be implemented patiently. This is for all good things take time to happen.

The last but not the least prerequisite is a positive attitude and mindset. This enables one to have an optimistic approach to problems and seek opportunities in them. Such a person is not easily disheartened and his perseverance pays off in the long run.

Agreeably there is no short cut to success and it does not come by chance. One has to assiduously work for it, with dedication and perseverance. This is for in the words of H.W. Longfellow, ‘Life’s battle does not always go, to the stronger and the fastest man, But sooner or later the man who wins is the man who thinks he can’.

How To Be Successful: 9 Qualities Required For Success In Life

  • By Katherine Hurst
  • Updated January 29th, 2018

A successful woman standing on the beach, her arms raised in triumph.

Do you want to be successful and accomplished in your career or life in general? Maybe you feel that you could succeed more in certain areas of your life and would like to find out how others have achieved success?

To be successful, not only do you need the right skills but you also need the traits of a successful person. So, if you want to find out how to be successful, keep reading for our top 9 tips.

You may find that you give up easily, or feel that you cannot achieve success… and this could be the problem!

If you can learn to believe in yourself and try to develop new habits and traits that successful people have, this could make success a lot easier and more achievable for you.

9 Qualities Required For Success In Life

In order to become successful, it can be very important to have the right mindset for success.

I am going to give you 9 qualities that are required for success in life, and these will be traits that most successful people will have.

1. Ambition

To be successful, you need ambition. Ambitious people will see that they are capable of doing their best and being the best and what they do.

If you feel that you are not good enough, or not capable, then you can be unlikely to try and reach your goals of success.

If you can believe in yourself and try your best, you can become a lot more ambitious. Having a strong desire to succeed is part of the journey to actually succeeding.

If you know what you want to achieve, and you have the determination to go for it; this can really help you.

A lot of the time, most people do not achieve success because of fear. Many people have a fear of failing and this is what can stop them from achieving.

Some of the most successful people will say that failing is key to succeeding and that you need to make mistakes. Having this mindset is a quality required for success.

If you have courage, you can stop being so fearful of failing and instead, focus on what you can achieve.

If you can look at mistakes and failures as lessons to learn from, this can also encourage you to keep going and try to succeed.

Courage is a great trait to have if you want to be successful. It will help you to develop the right mindset when it comes to reaching your goals and you won’t be afraid to try, even after you make a mistake.

3. Commitment

When someone is committed, they will have the determination to achieve what they want and will keep trying to reach that goal.

Success and commitment go hand in hand! Most successful people will believe in themselves and their goals for success, they will become committed to achieving them.

When you believe in what you are trying to succeed, you believe in yourself and what you can do.

Therefore, you are very likely to become committed to proving to yourself that you can succeed.

People who are not committed will find this very hard as they could lose focus on their goals and give up before they reach success.

4. Willpower

Willpower is a great trait to have, especially if you want to succeed in life. Those who have great willpower can focus and strive for their goals, solely focusing on achieving.

When you have a lot of willpower, you are less likely to procrastinate or make excuses , because you will be determined to succeed.

If you have no willpower, you are more likely to give up easily or change what you are doing, as procrastination can become more prominent and you may lose interest in trying to achieve your goals.

5. Integrity

In order to succeed, integrity is an important trait to have. When you are honest, people will believe in you, they can help you and you can also take pride in knowing that you are honest with yourself and others.

Not only is this just a good trait to have in general, but it will also help you to become more successful too! Integrity can help to define who you are and how you act towards others.

This can help you on your journey to success . If you are honest and have good morals, then you can trust yourself and your own success.

essay on qualities required for success

Having the drive and determination to work harder, to keep going, and try new things , is an excellent trait to have when it comes to being successful.

Without drive, you are not going to be as passionate about what you are trying to achieve, therefore you are more unlikely to achieve it.

Make sure that you can stay determined and passionate about what it is you want to succeed in so that you have a constant drive to succeed.

7. Patience

If you can be more patient , this can really help you when trying to be successful. Patience will help you when it comes to making any mistakes or having to deal with problems on your journey to success.

If you have little, or no patience, this is going to make things much harder for you. You will not be able to deal with the obstacles very well!

Understanding that things take time, and unfortunately, mistakes can be made, is crucial. You could become successful much quicker if you can accept this!

8. Optimism

If you are an optimist, it’s likely that you will be excited about what you are trying to achieve, and feel good about it too.

Having an optimistic attitude is a great trait to have if you want to be successful, as it can help you to stay positive about what you are doing, and not be disheartened if things go wrong.

Being optimistic can really help you because you will believe those good things can happen! You would expect positive outcomes to come from your journey to success too.

9. Resilience

Even if you get knocked down at the first hurdle, you should always keep going. Resilience is a key trait for success as it is what can help you to continue going, no matter what.

In life, you will face obstacles and things that might hinder your success. However, having resilience can really help you to bounce back from these things quickly.

If you are not resilient, you may run away as soon as you have to face a difficult situation, which will not help you on your journey to becoming successful . Try and become more resilient. Learn to deal with tough situations, so that you can power through and become successful.

Actually knowing and believing that you have the power to succeed can be difficult, but it’s something that can really benefit you. We all have the ability to succeed in life and get what we want! We just need to know how to reach our full potential .

Take a look at Joe Vitale's ebook ‘Awakening To Abundance’ and find out for yourself, just how much you can achieve in life, including success!

Success and hard work

Qualities Needed for a Successful Society

The notion of success is a highly subjective concern defined by personal needs and aspirations towards a prosperous future. Within the current materialistic society, the idea of the success of a single individual or the society, in general, became more problematic as it revealed its arrogant side. According to Burke (2015), the common assumptions regarding critical characteristics of a successful society imply “wealth, power, status, and prestige” (p. 16). The modern approach to understanding societal success considers it in terms of a balanced life. The overall successful society is shaped by the success of a single individual. Therefore, humans should focus on the aspects that lead to a more satisfying, meaningful, and successful life regarding different societal functions with an emphasis on work and family. The rapid changes in modern society increased the measures of societal success, and, thus, it is now a more complicated task to achieve.

Thriving societal institutions contribute to the self-determined and multifaceted growth of itstheirmbers. As described by Zandberg (2018), people are concerned with the development of everyone’s qualities and “not in the undermining of others” in terms of a successful society (p. 95). When defining the human quality and value of society, it is crucial to examine the past, existing, and future opportunities that it has. Human beings are social creatures focused on individual progress, which should be the primary focus in current society. A culture that encourages individual self-awareness establishes an uplifting social environment, which promotes a successful society. The positive and respectful attitude towards one another leads to genuine social depth, a high level of happiness, and a wide range of opportunities for people to fulfill their human capacities. Self-determination is the most vital concept that requires oneself to be fully accountable for personal success. With that said, a clear vision of existing reality and desirable achievements, as well as wisdom and presence of mind, contribute to the successful cultural identity and enhance the overall success of the society.
