To determine how many CEUs nurses need by state, Nurse.org has compiled a complete list of CEU requirements and state board contact information. Some states specify requirements for specific educational classes, including child abuse, narcotic, and COVID vaccination,  as part of the total mandatory CEU credits. 

On average, nurses will need to earn 20-30 contact hours with every nursing license renewal (typically every 2 years). Once your renewal window passes, your CEU accumulation starts over again. You cannot carry over CEUs from previous years and use them throughout your career. This forces nurses to truly educate themselves in a consistent manner year to year.

American Association of Critical-Care Nurses

This recorded online nursing course covers the incidence, symptoms, treatment, and stroke prevention among patients under 50. Among young adults, strokes present with different symptoms than among older patients, and clinical staff may not consider stroke as a cause of their symptoms. Completion results in 1.4 hours of CE credits. Before the course, you must complete a pre-reading article on implicit bias in nursing. The course expires December 31, 2024.

How Do Viruses Cause Infection

American Nurses Association (ANA)

This online course is a collaboration between the ANA and Project Firstline, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Training Collaborative for Healthcare Infection Prevention & Control. Nurses can earn 0.75 continuing education credit hours for completing this course. The opportunity to earn credits expires June 8, 2025.

The online course reviews the current science of viral infection and how this applies to nursing practice. Learners refresh their understanding of how viruses cause disease and how to use this knowledge to prevent infections.

See You Now: Focus on Health Equity

This course offers four hours of continuing education credits. The credits expire on December 15, 2024.

The course consists of a set of four podcasts from nurses and organizations addressing health equity. This includes a nurse practitioner (NP) describing how to recognize the signs of human trafficking, experts in preventing Black maternal mortality, a pandemic start-up that offers health screenings for people experiencing homelessness, and a chief diversity officer on partnering with faith-based organizations. Participants can learn about how to establish practices that promote equity.

This course, which offers four hours of continuing education credit through four podcasts, expires on June 30, 2025. The topics include implementing “The Pause,” an approach to help staff maintain personal equilibrium and honor their work after a patient dies; how two NPs set up online psychiatry and therapy office in just 45 days to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on mental health and access; a nurse executive on building a new organizational hierarchy and culture based on love; and a group of experts on nursing burnout. Learners gain a deeper understanding of mental health and how to foster it as nurses.

The Concept of Infection Control

This online course was developed by the ANA and Project Firstline, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Training Collaborative for Healthcare Infection Prevention & Control. It briefly covers the fundamentals of infection control and Project Firstline’s goals in preventing infections. The course offers 0.5 credit hours. The opportunity to earn continuing education credits expires September 1, 2025.

Introduction to Integrative Nursing

Coursera, University of Minnesota

This course comprises videos, readings, and quizzes and takes approximately 16 hours to complete. Topics include the principles of integrative nursing and how to incorporate the principles, strategies, and assessments in nursing practice. The course has had over 7,000 participants as of December 2023, with an average course rating of 4.7 out of five points.

Please note that while the Minnesota Board of Nursing has approved the course for 12 continuing education hours, the structure may not meet the guidelines for all boards. Subtitled versions are available in Arabic, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (European), Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Supporting Families and Caregivers

Coursera, Stanford University

This self-paced online nursing course from Stanford University takes approximately 10 hours. It is part of a series of courses on palliative care focusing on how professional carers can support families and other caregivers. It especially focuses on the needs of patients’ children. Students can pay for a certificate of completion. The program is available in eight languages. Video subtitles are available in 14 additional languages, but the quality of the translation is not guaranteed.

This online nursing course has not been reviewed for CE credits.

NIOSH Training for Nurses on Shift Work and Long Work Hours

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)

This course from the CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health explores the risks associated with working long hours. Participants learn to identify the health and safety risks of long shifts and develop workplace strategies to combat these negative effects.

The self-paced program comprises 12 modules split into two parts. Part one focuses on identifying problems related to shift work and long hours, while the second part presents risk reduction strategies. Each module takes 5-20 minutes to complete. The entire program is less than four hours long.

Participants earn 1.7 contact hours for completing the training.

Workplace Violence Prevention for Nurses

Each module in this CDC training course helps nurses recognize and prevent violence in the workplace. Participants learn to recognize risk factors, identify behavioral warning signs, and carry out a workplace violence prevention program.

The self-paced course consists of 13 15-minute modules and lasts approximately three hours in total. Modules examine the consequences of workplace violence, risk factors, and prevention strategies for organizations and nurses alike.

Participants earn 2.4 contact hours upon completion.

Nursing Studies – Diet Therapy

Alison, US Army Medical Center of Excellence

This course from the US Army Medical Center of Excellence offers strategies for incorporating diet therapy into treatment plans. Nurses learn to create specialized diets for patients. They explore the importance of therapeutic dieting, especially when treating digestive disorders and diseases.

The course’s two modules focus on seven topics and take 1.5-3 hours to complete. Course topics include reasons for therapeutic dieting, standard hospital diets, and nurses’ roles in diet therapy.

Upon completion, participants get a certificate to share with potential or current employers.

Understanding Clinical Research: Behind the Statistics

Coursera, University of Cape Town

Understanding Clinical Research: Behind the Statistics presents methods for interpreting clinical research results. Ideal for anyone who reads clinical literature, the course introduces common terms and concepts in statistics. Participants gain broader insight into statistical analysis and hypothesis testing.

The 27-hour course is six weeks long, and learners spend 3-6 hours on lessons each week. The curriculum focuses on defining study types, describing data, and understanding statistical analysis. It also teaches hypothesis testing, appropriate test selection, and analyzing the accuracy of results.

Individuals who complete the free course may purchase an optional certificate of completion. The course has not been reviewed for CE credit eligibility.

Course content addresses the ways in which age, physical activity, and diet affect the musculoskeletal system. How to Taper Patients off of Chronic Opioid Therapy

While some states have some required classes, nurses are mostly free to choose whatever CE topics interest them or apply to their field or specialty. 

Consider the following factors when choosing CE courses:

  • Is it a topic that will help you learn more about your current specialty?
  • Is it a topic that might help you move to a different specialty?
  • Is it a topic that might help your overall nursing practice (like communication or documentation)?
  • Is it a topic you are genuinely interested in?

What to Look For in a CE Course

Regardless of whether CE courses are free or paid, there are several considerations to keep in mind when determining whether or not a CE program is worth your time.

Continuing education hours can only be awarded by programs that have been approved by an accrediting board. These include most states’ boards of nursing and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). 

Confirm how the program will provide you with documentation of your contact hours. Your best bet is to get a printable certificate immediately on completion. If your license renewal date is quickly approaching, you may not want to wait for a program to email you or, worse, snail mail you a certificate.

ECHO Idaho Awarded Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education Status

BOISE, Idaho — Jan. 25 2022 — ECHO Idaho, a virtual, continuing education resource for Idaho’s healthcare workforce, has been awarded Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education status. This designation provides continuing education to all individuals on a healthcare team — including counselors, nurses, pharmacists, physicians and others — through a single, unified application process. ECHO Idaho is the first and only Idaho institution to offer continuing education (CE) credits to psychologists and physician assistants through Joint Accreditation.

Receipt of CE credits is necessary for healthcare professionals to maintain certifications, credentials and licensure. The number of hours and credit activity types vary across professions. Obtaining CE through ECHO Idaho removes barriers that health providers – especially in rural areas of the state – may face such as travel to CE-eligible conferences, time away from patients, and drift from evidence-based medicine due to a solo or small practice.

“By opening the doors to a variety of healthcare audiences simultaneously, we are able to ensure that our programming is dynamic, collaborative and interdisciplinary,” said ECHO Idaho Director Lachelle Smith. “We provide an environment for learning about patient care from a variety of perspectives that is convenient to attend and immediately applicable to one’s practice.”

Supported by the Idaho WWAMI Medical Education Program , ECHO Idaho addresses urgent healthcare needs in the Gem State by connecting specialists with local healthcare providers through Zoom for case-based learning and support. Community-based healthcare team members — especially those in rural or underserved areas of Idaho — can enhance their skills by engaging with subject matter experts and specialists across the state in regular, real-time collaborative sessions. Each hour-long ECHO session is meant to help healthcare professionals gain the expertise required to meet the unique needs of their patients.

“ECHO offers collaboration that is seldom available but often necessary to provide the best care possible to complex patients who may be suffering from multiple physical and mental health diagnoses simultaneously,” said Rachel Root, Ph.D, a Boise psychologist and panelist for ECHO Idaho’s Behavioral Health in Primary Care series since 2018. “Through ECHO, I’ve built relationships with peers I might not have met or known about otherwise. The hour-long sessions have proven valuable to me and my practice, but even more so now that I can claim continuing education units.”

ECHO Idaho currently offers education series focused on the following healthcare topics: Behavioral Health in Primary Care; Counseling Techniques for Substance Use Disorders; COVID-19; Opioids, Pain and Substance Use Disorders; Pediatric Autism; Viral Hepatitis and Liver Care; and X-Waiver Trainings.

About the standards.

The Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education are designed to:

  • Ensure that accredited continuing education serves the needs of patients and the public
  • Present learners with only accurate, balanced, scientifically justified recommendations
  • Assure learners they can trust accredited continuing education to help them deliver, safe, effective, cost-effective, and compassionate care that is based on best practice and evidence
  • Create a clear, unbridgeable separation between accredited continuing education and marketing and sales.

The Standards were released in December 2020 and went into effect on January 1, 2022, replacing the Standards for Commercial Support: Standards to Ensure Independence in CME Activities.

Accredited CME providers need to comply with the Standards that are applicable to their organizations by January 1, 2022.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Prepare yourself for employment opportunities as a nursing assistant in extended care facilities, hospitals, home health and hospice situations. This course meets the requirements for Idaho certification of nursing assistants. Clinical hours may be outside normal class hours, but students will be provided clinical dates at least one month in advance. This is a time intensive course. Please consider other commitments and use discretion before registering for the course.

In alignment with state requirements, students are required to attend 100% of the course to complete the program successfully. Clinical facilities may require proof of COVID vaccinations prior to clinical rotations. 

CNA courses are available with several options:

12 Week–Daytime class: meets 6 hours/session; twice/week 14 Week–Evening class: meets 5 hours/session; twice/week 16 Week– Web Supplemented Daytime class: meets 6 hours/ skills session; meets every other week 20 Week–Daytime class meets 3 hours/session; twice/week; (allows student more time for learning and skill mastery.)

Note: BACKGROUND CHECK/Drug Screening

ISU does not generally perform background checks or drug screening in the CNA program, except in our State Hospital South Course, where both are required. If you have a criminal history that will prevent you from passing a background check you may want to reconsider taking this course as you will not be able to work as a CNA.  Please refer to the Idaho Criminal History Unit website at https://healthandwelfare.idaho.gov/bcu . See ‘denials.’ Once course has begun, you will be ineligible for reimbursement or transfer of course fees . If we are informed of a past crime or positive drug screen during the course, we must inform the clinical agency and allow them to decide if the student can rotate. If denied clinical, the student will be unable to finish the course.

This course meets the following requirements for Idaho registration of nursing assistants:

1) 88 hours of classroom instruction (including discussion, videos, hands-on lab experiences)

2) 32 hours clinical experience in health care facilities

3) Guidance preparing for manual skills testing and written exam as required by the State of Idaho for placement on state registry.

Additional costs include:  Textbooks, BLS Healthcare Provider CPR training , clinical attire, clinical tools and immunizations.  Clinical hours may be outside normal class hours, but student will be provided clinical dates at least one month in advance. In alignment with state requirements, students are required to attend 100% of the course to complete the program successfully.
