Summary of phd program:.

Applications are invited for a 4 year-position as PhD Research Fellow in speech and language pathology to be based at the Department of Special Needs Education, University of Oslo. The successful applicant will conduct research within the Second Language Learners Plus (SL+) project financed by The Research Council of Norway (see project page). SL+ is a project within the research group ComPros.

The aim of the project is to develop and examine the effefcts of a digital vocabulary intervention program for second language (L2) learners in Norwegian kindergardens. The objective is to achieve sustainable effects on L2 vocabulary breadth and depth, and to obtain transfer effects to broader language skills. In the project, a litterature review (meta-analysis), observations, interviews, and a randomized control trial are utilized.

A PhD Research Fellowship at the intersection of data and cold-region sciences is available at the Department of Geosciences at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The fellowship has a 4-year duration and will be devoted to research education at the intersection of data science and cryospheric sciences.

The PhD project is in particular investigating possibilities to use data science approaches for quantifying mountain permafrost and its hydrological significance under climate change, based on a combination of data science with remote sensing, numerical modelling and field experiments.

The position is funded through the University of Oslo dScience centre  to which the successful candidate will contribute a working time equivalent of 25%. The PhD fellow will be expected to participate in regular project team meetings and will be able to spend an extended period abroad visiting one of our international collaborators. 3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geoscientific instrumentation

In the PhD project, the candidate will improve an available instrument design to enable a combination of multiple off-the-shelf sensors to form a multi-sensor probe, collecting unique measurements at the base of glaciers such as water pressure, pore pressure, sediment strength, and instrument orientation. Reliability measures, such as component screening and enhanced test and characterization of the probes hardware as well as software shall ensure the suitability of the probe for autonomous operation in harsh environment. For this, a thorough test protocol shall be developed and conducted to. In a second phase, the instrument will be deployed in the field, to collect data that eventually will be analysed. Innovative methods shall be developed to analyse these new datasets considering current theories of glacier sliding, exploiting the expertise in data science available at MN’s dScience center ( https://www.uio.no/dscience/ ).

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in fault characterization (structural geology)

Faults are complex structures that substantially influence the mechanical behavior and hydraulic connectivity of rock formations. One of the main challenges in studying faults (both seismic and aseismic portions) is the accessibility to fault’s 3D structure. Depending on the resolution of the measuring methods and the fault accessibility, fault geometric characteristics could be constrained and biased. Therefore, application of modern visualization techniques that can provide a more complete view of fault geometry and growth is essential.

In this regard, we are going to utilize state-of-the-art drone imaging in outcrops and deep learning on seismic data in order to reduce the uncertainty of fault data, characterize faults from different scales and hence get a better knowledge of fault 3D structure. Utilizing this multiscale approach, we will be able to improve fault scaling laws and fill the gaps in the global datasets of faults from different scales. A detailed project plan will be developed in collaboration with the successful candidate at the start of PhD.

Scholarships for Americans to study in Norway

NORAM offers scholarships to U.S. citizens pursuing graduate level studies in Norway. The purpose of the scholarship program is to provide financial support for Americans to study in Norway. By supporting post-graduate study or research in areas of mutual importance to Norway and the United States, we hope to bring the two countries closer. Through awarding scholarships to American students and researchers, we invest in the growth of knowledge and understanding and it will strengthen the ties of friendship between the two countries.

The scholarship amounts vary from NOK 10 000  – 40 000. The size of the individual grants will depend on the research subject, need, purpose and the intended length of stay in Norway.

The application deadline is April 1st every year.

Terms of awards, rules and requirements.

The applicant must be an American citizen, planning to stud y or currently studying in Norway.

The application must be for the 2024-25 academic year.

The applicant must have completed a bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree.

Preference may be given to applicants pursuing their first master's degree.

The application fee is non-refundable.

Education requirements

Scholarships are only for full-time graduate level studies in Norway, both exchange and full degree. Online courses or summer programs are not approved.

The project description must be of academic merit, and the project must be feasible within the proposed framework.

Students can apply without being accepted to an institution before the application deadline, but must submit documentation of admission/invitation if awarded a scholarship.

The project/academic field must be of mutual benefit to the two countries.

It is not possible to apply for funding for past semesters.  

Scholarship period and length

The scholarship awards follow the academic year (August 1st – May 31st), and are awarded one year at a time. It is not possible to apply for more than one year of support within one application cycle.

You may receive a NORAM scholarships max. twice (i.e. for a maximum of two academic years). If you have previously received a NORAM scholarship, we ask that you kindly disclose this in your application.

The program period has to be a minimum length of three months.

Applicants who are awarded/have applied for funding from other sources for the same application period applied must notify NORAM.

Applicant must notify NORAM of any changes to plans (ex. program length, project plans etc.)

Applications to NORAM's Americans to Norway scholarship program are carefully evaluated by our scholarship committee and in certain cases external subject consultants.  We aim to alert all applicants with a decision, whether awarded or not, by June 1st. We do however ask for your understanding for any delays, and assure that we do our best to notify you as soon as possible.  If you are accepted to your program/institution after submitting your application, you must provide documentation to NORAM as soon as possible. PhD Scholarships

BI offers PhD scholarships to support students in the five areas of specialisation at the PhD level.

The doctoral programme leads to a PhD degree and is a four-year full-time study programme, including 25% teaching responsibilities. 

There are no tuition fees in the PhD programme at BI. However, in order to have an application to the PhD programme at BI considered, you need to have funding. It is not possible to self-fund a PhD at BI.

There are three different ways of funding your PhD at BI

Open scholarship (funded by BI) These scholarships are announced once a year, from November to January. The scholarships are open which means that your PhD will not be linked to a specific project but must fit it under one of the six specialisations offered by BI. A member of the academic faculty must share you research interests to be able to supervise you. A supervisor will be appointed for you if you are admitted to the programme. 

PhD candidates will have their daily workplace and shared office at BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway. Scholarship positions are announced online under vacant positions . All applications are electronic. If there are no scholarships published on the page in the previous link, there are currently no available scholarships.

Scholarship linked to a research project These scholarships are announced from time to time. Your PhD research and dissertation will have to be closely linked to the research project. You are usually not required to find a supervisor before applying. You are encouraged to contact the faculty involved in the project if you are interested in applying. Each project will belong to one of the six specialisations at BI. In some cases the project can be linked to more than one specialisation.

PhD candidates will have their place of work at BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway. Available PhD scholarship positions linked to research projects are announced online under  vacant positions .

Industrial PhD An industrial PhD is a doctoral degree that is carried out in cooperation between BI and business and industry. If you are considering this kind of PhD and have funding and confirmation from your employer please contact [email protected] for further information. An industrial PhD has the same requirements for educational background for admission and is also considered a full-time programme. BI and the employer enter into an agreement regarding time spent at BI and time spent at the employer in addition to financial issues. The purpose of our three or four year, fully funded programme, is to give the scholar a deepened and broadened theoretical and methodological knowledge, alongside the experience of producing a substantial piece of original scientific work.

The conferral of the PhD in economics and business administration signifies expertise in a major field of study.

Funding your PhD

Phd research scholar.

To become a PhD Research Scholar you need to apply for an announced scholarship. As a PhD Research Scholar you are both a student and an employee, which means that you will receive a standard contract of employment and a personnel form before your employment period commences. “PhD Research Scholar” is the official job title.

The annual salary for the PhD research scholar position will be approximately NOK 550 000 (equivalent to approximately EUR 46 350 or USD 50 200) as of August 2024. Thereafter, annual adjustment of minimum 3%.

The salary ensures a fair standard of living in Norway, and is subject to Norwegian taxes and benefits, including health care provision and membership of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

PhD research scholars cannot have paid employment outside NHH during the contract period, unless approval is given by the PhD programme/your department of affiliation. 

You are expected to mainly reside in Bergen during their contract period. However, you may apply to be a visiting PhD Research Scholar at another school. In such case, you need a formal approval from your department. Note that you might be eligible for “additional scholarships”, please read below. 

The scholarship normally lasts for a period of four years. A four-year scholarship requires the candidates to combine their studies with 25% work as a teaching and/or research assistant. This requirement averages out to less than 9 hours on a weekly basis. A three-year scholarship does not require such a commitment.

This teaching and research experience during the four-year programme, gives our PhD Research Scholars valuable teaching/pedagogical/research experience for a further academic career. As a PhD Research Scholar you will assist faculty members to:

• Provide research assistance for faculty members.
• Teach selected sessions at master-level courses.
• Grade assignments and exams of students in the masters programmes.
• Supervise master-level students’ theses.

If you submit your thesis before the expiring date of the contract of employment, you will be granted a bonus of 30 000 NOK. You will receive the compensation after you have received your conferment of the PhD degree. 

External PhD

You may apply for enrolment to the PhD programme if you can document external funding, from another norwegian academic institution.

Furthermore, you must be found qualified to enter our PhD programme

As an external PhD candidate you will be granted a PhD student/PhD candidate status and sign a PhD-contract with the PhD programme at NHH, but you do not have an employment contract with NHH.

Industrial and public sector PhD Candidate

The Research Council has established the Industrial and Public Sector PhD Scheme to boost research efforts and long-term competence-building for Norwegian trade and industry through the recruitment of doctoral candidates.

Under the Industrial and Public Sector PhD scheme may apply for support for a period for an employee seeking to peruse an ordinary doctoral degree. The Research council support is limited to maximum 50 per cent of total project costs. The rates are adjusted on an annual basis and may therefore change at the beginning of a new year.

Firstly, you must be found qualified to enter our PhD programme, then you and the company must apply to The Research council for funding. The company/organisation and NHH sign a common agreement prior to enrolment in the PhD programme.

• The PhD candidate must normally complete the training component within two years.
• The PhD candidate must pass a mid-term evaluation (proposal defence). The proposal defence should normally be held in the third or the fourth semester.
• The PhD candidate must complete a course in pedagogy (the course gives no credits) prior to submission of the thesis. 
• Vice rector for research may add additional obligatory milestones in case of delayed progress. 

How is my information used and who handles it?

Step 1. Each year the PhD student, the main supervisor of the student submit individual progress reports to the Department. 

Step 2. The PhD Coordinator of the different departments usually have individual meetings with the PhD students to discuss the individual progression and other matters. The department also submit individual reports on progress of each of their PhD students and any issues or measures required to the Vice Rector for Research. 

Step 3.The  together with the Vice Rector for Research evaluates the information from the student, main supervisor and the department and prepare overviews to be discussed with the departments. At the dialogue meeting, the progression of the first year PhD students will also be discussed even though a progress report was not submitted. At the time of the meeting, results from the courses taken the previous fall will be available, therefore the progression of the first year students will also be discussed in the dialogue meeting that usually take place in February/March. 

Step 4. The Vice Rector for Research, the Office of Research Administration and the Office of Human Resources hold dialogue meetings with the six departments. At these meetings, each student’s progress is assessed, and, if necessary, individual measures are implemented as needed. There is a strong focus on early detection of delays in progression and to quickly provide assistance to PhD students to get them back on track.

Research stay abroad

A stay abroad during your PhD period can be enriching in many ways. Such a stay usually lasts between 3 months and one year and is decided in dialogue with your supervisor(s) and the PhD coordinator at your department.

Start discussing the issue with your supervisor(s) and PhD coordinator early to determine when an appropriate time is for such a stay, where you should go and what you want to achieve with the research stay. Often the research stay abroad takes place during the later stages of your PhD period.  

The research stay should include participation in some form of academic activities. This could be co-writing of papers and work with a co-supervisor, as well as formal activities organized by the host institution.

Normally funding is provided through NHH funds .

The hosting institution may also have formal requirements for visiting scholars. Don’t forget that formal processes, for instance related to visas, may take a lot of time, so start your planning early.  

Submitting your thesis

Receiving the recommendation by the evaluation committee.

The evaluation committee gives their recommendation on whether the thesis is worthy of being defended for a doctoral degree within three months. You may submit comments to their report to the vice rector for research within two weeks upon receiving the recommendation.

The vice rector for research based upon the committee’s recommendation, decide whether the thesis is worthy of being defended. If the thesis is rejected, the candidate may resubmit the thesis for a new evaluation after six months, and within two years.  If the committees recomends minor revisions and this is granted, the candidate is normally given three months to revice the thesis. 

If your thesis is accepted for public defense, you will be asked to write an abstract in English (and Norwegian), and send it to the department of communications for use in press releases .

Scholarships

The University of Stavanger does not offer any other scholarships. Students applying to other programmes must apply as self-financing students.

Tuition fees and semester fee

From the academic year 2023/2024, non-EU/EEA citizens are required to pay tuition fees at the University of Stavanger. 

• Who is exempted from paying tuition fee?

All students are required to pay a semester fee per semester, with the exception of exchange students.

Students who need a study permit

It is important to bear in mind that the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) requires that applicants for a Norwegian  study permit  document financial means. 

The current rate of NOK 151 690 (March 2024, adjusted yearly) is intended to cover living expenses during one academic year.

Exchange students must document NOK 68 950 for the autumn semester 2024 and NOK 82 740 for the spring semester 2025. This amount does not include your plane tickets to and from Norway but should include all costs once you arrive here (food, housing, books, entertainment, excursions, etc.).

1# NORAM Scholarships

NORAM or The Norway-America Association provides scholarships to American students in order to financially support their studies in Norway. The main aim is to promote studies in areas of mutual interest for Norway and America. Norway Scholarships are provided to students based on need. A certain amount is granted through this scholarship based on the research subject, objective, and length of stay of students in Norway.

Generally, up to 10 scholarships are granted every year. The scholarships are provided only for full-time graduate-level studies in Norway and the program has to be for a minimum of three months. You may get further information through NORAM’s website.

2# Erasmus+ Scholarships Program

This provides scholarships and funding for higher education for students from programs or partner countries. Norway is one of the program countries of Erasmus+. Through the program, students have the option of support in studies abroad in any of the partner or program countries. The period of the program ranges from 3 to 12 months but students can benefit from the program multiple times.

However, students have to apply through the higher education institute of their home country for enrolling in the study abroad program of Erasmus+. Also, some Norwegian universities are part of the consortium that delivers Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degrees (EMJMD) and the best students of these degrees can get funding. 3# Norwegian-Russian Scholarships

Russian students who wish to study in Norway for one or two semesters can benefit from these scholarships. They are granted for Norwegian Language and Literature and other subjects. Through this scholarship program, students and teachers of Russian universities get grants to study in selected universities in Norway. Scholarship holders also don’t have to pay tuition fees.

However, they do have to pay semester fees as well as travel and visa costs. The former is for students with International Baccalaureate Diploma and covers 100% tuition fees while the latter is for students who have completed upper secondary school and covers 50% tuition fees.

Both are meant for international students of Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Business Analytics. Furthermore, at the master’s level, there are many scholarships to finance tuition fees and living expenses. Some of these cover the cost fully while others provide partial coverage of the costs. 5# High North Fellowship Program

This program offers scholarships in Norway for students from Canada, Russia, South Korea, the US, and Japan. These are meant to support students who want to come to Norway as part of their studies. Their institute must have an agreement with a higher education institute in Norway. The program is for bachelor’s and master’s level students but Ph.D. students can also apply and come as research fellows.

The duration of the scholarship is one to two semesters and students are required to stay in Norway for at least four months. Students can choose from specific universities and areas that are part of the program. Under the program, students get a monthly stipend and travel grant. Plus, they are not required to pay tuition fees.

Entry requirements for a bachelor’s or master’s degree programme 

Do you want to study a full degree in Norway? Admission to Norwegian Universities is highly competitive. You must meet certain academic requirements and language requirements. The requirements vary based on your educational background and what you are applying for. Read more about admission to degree-programmes . 

Entry requirements for exchange students 

Are you already enrolled in a study programme and interested in a semester or two in Norway, within your degree? If so, you should ask the office in charge of exchange/international relations at your university for more information about requirements, deadlines and what options might be available for an exchange to Norway. Entry requirements for degrees taught in Norwegian

To support your daily life, you need a place to live, food, electricity, transport and more. 

The estimated living cost for a student is stipulated to NOK 13 790 per month or 151 690,- per year (2024-25). In addition you may have costs related to insurance, travel, visa fees and eventual tuition fees.

All students have to pay a semester fee of approximately 600 - 1000 NOK per semester to the student welfare organisation ("Samskipnad" in Norwegian). The student welfare organisations offer student housing, childcare, sport facilities, health and food services for students at the institutions.

Housing through the Samskipnad is normally secure and more reasonable priced than competing for a room on the open market, but is subjected to competition, especially in the bigger cities. Many students chose to share a flat to keep the costs down.

Degree seeking students from outside of EU/EEA and Switzerland must normally pay tuition fees when studying in Norway. The tuition fees are based on the real cost  of the respective study and varies between institutions and study programmes.

Students from Norway, Switzerland and countries in the EU/EEA area are exempted from paying tuition fees at public higher educational institutions. 

Exchange students, doctoral candidates and students coming to Norway through schemes like, Fulbright, Erasmus Mundus, NORPART, NORHED or StAR (Students At Risk) are normally exempted from paying tuition at the public institutions.

The Norwegian government offers no individual scholarships open to all international students. In most cases, you have to find other ways of financing your studies in Norway. However, there are a few other foundations or schemes that offer scholarships to degree students  and scholarships to exchange students , including PhD.

There are different visa requirements depending on your nationality. The requirements are the same for degree seeking students and exchange students staying in Norway for three months or longer.

Regardless of your nationality you must be able to support yourself financially to study in Norway. It is estimated that you need at least NOK 13 790 per month or NOK 151 690- per year (2024/25) to cover your living costs in Norway. Students from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland are required to show proof of funds to obtain a study permit.

Students from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland must apply for a study permit

If you come from a country outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland and wish to study in Norway, you must apply for a study permit and pay an application fee. This also applies to UK citizens. You must meet certain criteria to obtain a study permit, for example proof of admission, housing, and funding.

Students from the EU/EEA/Switzerland must register

If you come from the EU/EEA or Switzerland, you must register with the local police within three months of your arrival. You can work in addition to your studies.

Part time work

Many international students hold part-time jobs when studying in Norway. It is a good way to practice your Norwegian and increase your budget.  

As a Nordic/EU/EEA/Swiss citizen you can work in addition to your studies. If you are a citizen from a country outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland you can only work up to 20 hours a week while you are studying, and full-time during holidays. Remember, you are first of all a full-time student.

Stipends and loans

NTNU does generally not offer any stipends/scholarships or loans. However, we recommend that you investigate if there are any funding opportunities yourself. Below are some stipends, loans and scholarships from third parties that are applicable to certain students at NTNU.

For master´s degree students:

• Anglo-Norse Society : £3000 is awarded each year to the best qualified British citizen  receiving admission to a master´s degree at NTNU. You do not need to apply. 
• EU loans: Some EU countries offers its citizens favourable loans to help you finance a master degree in an Erasmus+ Programme country
• NORPART MA Scholarships: NTNU offers five scholarships to students from Ethiopia who will pursue MPhil in childhood studies in the academic year 2023/2024 ( Note:  Changes to this scholarship scheme may arise if the motion to introduce tuition fees in Norway passes)
• GSEP - Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership :  Scholarship for outstanding Master's-level students from developing countries in fields related to sustainable energy development.
