Leveraging mechanochemistry for sustainable polymer degradation

Mechanochemistry is a promising technology to tackle current and future polymer waste streams for a sustainable future. With this review, we take into account synthetic, computational, technical, and engineering perspectives to converge trituration and polymer mechanochemistry with a particular focus on the fate of commodity polymers and potential technologies to monitor mechanochemical reactions while they occur. We highlight the need for future transdisciplinary research to tackle the high-leverage parameters governing an eventually successful mechanochemical polymer degradation approach for a circular economy.

The catalytic carboxylation of C( sp 2 )–H bonds using CO 2 is an efficient strategy to produce carboxylic acids; however, the carboxylation of azines is a challenge. Now, a visible-light-driven, thiolate-catalysed method for the carboxylation of azine C( sp 2 )–H bonds using CO 2 is reported, enabling the synthesis of N-heteroaromatic carboxylic acids with excellent regiocontrol.

Jan Apotheker retired in December 2016 as lecturer in science education at the University of Groningen, where he was involved in training both secondary school teachers as well as the faculty staff. Between 2014 an 2016 he coordinated the FP-7 project’Irresistible’. in which State of the art science research was introduced in the science classroom. He is chair of the Committee on Chemistry Education of IUPAC, and chief editor of ‘Chemistry Teacher International’.
