When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she doesn’t think it’s love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.
Never ask about the past. Don’t expect a future.
They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.
Hearts get infiltrated. Promises get broken. Rules get shattered. Love gets ugly.

Holy WOW!!! What a beautiful story!!!
It was absolute stunning perfection in every way. My heart is just overflowing with emotions ♥
Starting with Slammed and Point of Retreat , then with Hopeless , Losing Hope and This Girl , and once again with Maybe Someday , Colleen Hoover has proven over and over again that her stories are unique, powerful and incredibly well written. I have come to trust her writing implicitly. I love the passion she conveys in her words, the depths of the connections she establishes between her characters, and the effortlessly beautiful style in which writes her stories. Without a doubt, she is one of my favorite authors.
Ugly Love is beautiful, sexy, and heart-wrenching. It’s powerful, compelling and emotionally charged with a unique storyline that was truly unlike any other I’ve read. For days after I finished reading, my mind would drift back to Miles and Tate and relive moments of their story because I just couldn’t let go.
________________
I fell in love with the story on page one. You might think that the first page is a little early to proclaim undying love for a book but I instantly felt connected — it was like I’d just stepped right into the story.
We first meet Tate when she moves in with her brother for a fresh start where her path quite literally crosses with airline pilot Miles Archer as he lies passed out drunk outside her new place. Despite her initial judgment of his character, she quickly learned there a whole side of himself he was hiding from the world — a deep, bottomless pit of pain and sadness.
She wasn’t looking for a relationship and he wanted nothing to do with love but they had an undeniably powerful attraction towards each other. Drawn together, but unwilling to give themselves wholly over, they agreed to a friends-with-benefits arrangement following Miles’ two, unwavering rules that would forever keep a distance between them.
“Don’t ask about my past,” he says firmly. “And never expect a future.”
The more time they spent together, the more complicated things became as the lines between friendship and love began to blur. As Tate began to give her heart over, Miles fell further away. The pain of his past was so great that he never again would allow himself to fall in love. Not for any reason, or for anyone.
“It’s not that I don’t like you, Tate… I just don’t want to like you. I don’t want to like anyone . I don’t want to date anyone. I don’t want to love anyone.”
However even through the most painful and ugly times, there’s a healing power to love. This story left me emotionally drained but on the most amazing book high you can imagine. It was a powerful journey that showed how even after the worst possible devastation, love can always find a way.
________________
Every single moment while reading this book, I was feeling something, and feeling it strongly. It was thrilling, mysterious, sexy, alluring, emotional, it was everything in the exact perfect balance. From the start, it was clear that we were not seeing the full picture so each scene gave us another piece of the puzzle that was Miles’ past. Everything just made me want to know more. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough!
Miles was such an intriguing character to try and figure out. Enigmatic. Mysterious. Smart. Sexy. Sensitive. His past so full of pain that it shut him away from wanting any hope for his future. Not only was he unable to move on, but he genuinely didn’t want to…. and he was willing to do everything in his power, to sacrifice anything , to never again have to experience so much pain. Seeing him struggle internally with both his aversion to love and his growing attachment to Tate was just heartbreaking. His pain felt so real that I can honestly say, I’ve never wanted to hug a fictional character this much before.
“Tate,” He says in a pained whisper. His face moves to my neck, and one of his hands grips my waist… His other hand moves to the back of my head as his lips rest against the skin of my neck. “What do I do?” He whispers. “What the fuck do I do?”
We were shown the story through both Miles and Tate’s POVs in a mix of both present day storylines and flashbacks. The present was told from Tate’s perspective and, because of how mysterious Miles was, we got to see flashbacks from his POV six years earlier. And as these little pieces of his past slowly began to line up with his behaviour in the present, I was able to begin putting together the real story he was hiding.
He kept so much hidden that all the little things between them — the hint of a smile, the stroke of a thumb, a quick glance — became so much more powerful and meaningful. And because of the build up of all these little moments, when Miles and Tate finally got together it was explosive!
Dear long-time CoHo fans, be prepared for hotness !!!!! This is a whole new side to Colleen Hoover’s writing and let me tell you, it is sexy and steamy!!! Trust me, you will be fanning yourself 😉
“The couch or your bed?” he whispers. “Both,” I reply.
But on a more serious note…. The more I read, the closer I got to discovering the source of Miles’ pain and when it hit, it was gut-wrenching !!! I can honestly say that few character’s backstories have ever made my heart shatter as Miles’ did. I cried — no, sobbed — so much that I could no longer see the words and so I just sat there with tears steaming down my face absorbing the huge emotions this story evoked.
“If I were capable of loving someone… it would be you.”
I want to promise you though that this story is worth every tear because the way all the pieces of the story come together is absolutely gorgeous. The ending will leave you with a joyous feeling but the journey to get there is not an easy one. It’s beautiful but so broken. Ugly love.
I’ve read this book twice now and I know I’ll be reading it many more times to come. I have the book hangover of the century and I’m finding it hard to let go of Miles and Tate because of how strongly I connected to them. Truly, I don’t think there can be greater proof that this was a wonderful book.
I’ve loved every book Colleen Hoover has written but this one is my favorite. Ugly Love is a must-read book of the year! I loved every word, I felt every moment, and I will never forget this story.
I don’t give out a lot of 6 star ratings (in fact this will be the first one I’ve given this year) but the truth is that this book went above and beyond. The story was powerful, the writing was stunning, and the way every single piece of it was woven together was simply breathtaking.
Rating: 6 STARS!! Standalone romance.
And… I still want to hug Miles ♥

I’ve yet to read Ms. Hoover! Is there a book of hers that you recommend first? I got a sample of Never, Never and although it has a lot of negative reviews it definitely intrigued me, but I’m not sure if I should start with that on or Slammed, or something else?

Love this review. Like you this book is my favourite of all Colleen’s books. I cried so much with the story of Miles and Rachel (even if Rachel don’t like me much) and think over and over again that was unfair for them, but I’m really happy for the most beautiful end with Tate, she is my fav, literally she is my hero, she hold on all the bad side of Miles, I mean comparing with the way he was with Rachel of course, because the Miles we saw in the present is not the same we saw when he was a teenager. I just want to say that this story is just amazing. Colleen thank you for this beautiful story. ohh and I’m sorry for my english I know is not the best i just do that i can… goodbye honey

Although I would not say I am the world’s biggest “CoHo” fan, I would be lying if I said I was a stranger to her work.
Colleen Hoover, a New York Times Bestselling author, has released over 20 novels to date. Sure, I have read her classics, It Ends With Us, and November 9 , but in no way shape or form am I a Colleen Hoover super fan. I say this, not to reiterate that I’m not a fan (I’ve actually enjoyed what I’ve read by her so far) but rather to help you understand the impartiality I’ll be able to uphold when giving an honest review of Ugly Love . I feel it’s necessary to make this statement of neutrality because — wow — Colleen Hoover has a whole army of loyal and loving fans. With over one million TikTok followers and with the tag #ColleenHoover used over 2.5 billion times on the platform, it’s safe to say she is changing the game for how authors interact with their fans online.
So, let’s discuss Ugly Love . When I picked up this book, I started reading without any previous knowledge of the subject matter. Unlike some of her other novels, Ugly Love is a stand-alone story that follows the main characters, Miles and Tate. When Tate temporarily moves in with her big brother, Corbin, she meets Miles: a gorgeous airline pilot who lives just across the hall. From the get-go, it’s clear that Miles and Tate are interested in each other, and they embark on a no-strings-attached arrangement following Miles’ two cardinal rules:
Of course, in true YA-romance fashion, the pair quickly run into some roadblocks when emotions get tangled, and feelings get hurt. *shocker*
But as Tate learns more about Miles and his secretive, dark past, will he let her in and bend his rules? Or will they both walk away with hurt feelings and broken hearts?
My overall thoughts on the book? I liked it! I think some Colleen Hoover haters claim she plays into cliché tropes too often. Although I don’t disagree that her work frequents clichés, it doesn’t make me enjoy the books any less. Hoover knows her audience and plays to her strengths — which clearly shows in her domination of the romance genre.
Ugly Love had me on a roller coaster of emotions from the very beginning to the very end. Love, attraction, sadness, grief; you can rest assured that any emotion you can feel, Hoover touches on it in Ugly Love .
Hoover masters the trope of a slow-burn romance . I thought the pacing of the book was one of its best qualities, not too quickly that you move through the plot and characterization sloppily but slow enough to leave the reader anticipating what is to come.
Ugly Love is a great book for Colleen Hoover fans, romance novelist enthusiasts, and everyone in between.
Do I think the novel is realistic? Not particularly. But it is the epic, swoon-worthy, one-in-a-million love stories that are the most entertaining — fictional or not. To me, reading is all about finding a niche or topic that is interesting, fun, and makes you excited to discover more.
If your ‘niche’ happens to be romance, keep Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover on your radar this year.

Now that "It Ends With Us" is a legitimate box office sensation — the romantic drama managed to snag second place during its opening weekend behind "Deadpool & Wolverine," somehow — we should all gird our loins and get ready for more Colleen Hoover adaptations. The best-selling novelist, who brought her own difficult life experiences to "It Ends With Us," has written, to put it bluntly, a lot of books, and Hoover's fans are nothing if not devoted to her and her work. So, what's next for the fanbase that calls themselves "the Cohorts?" Probably a string of movies based on Hoover's soapy, steamy, and highly dramatic stories.
I should be upfront right now: I am not a fan of Hoover's work. I find the writing to be technically poor, I don't understand why her character names are so blatantly ridiculous (Ryle? Lowen?! Allysa?!?! ), and I think that her attempts at serious messages are misguided at best and damaging at worst. A lot of people like her books, and that's fine, but the woman has seared so many unsettling images into my brain — from cow sh*t as an aphrodisiac to someone washing and then puking on a raw chicken — that I might be slightly uncharitable here.
With that out of the way, we all have to reckon with our fate, which probably involves a bunch of big-screen takes on Hoover's books. So, which ones deserve this dubious honor?
Despite the alleged drama between Blake Lively and director Justin Baldoni on the set of "It Ends With Us," a sequel feels like a done deal at this point, largely because Colleen Hoover already wrote the damn thing. In the sequel, Lily Blossom Bloom, the clumsily named florist turned single parent to Emerson "Emmy" Kincaid, has to figure out a way to co-parent with her physically abusive ex-husband Ryle, all while she starts up a real romance with her childhood love Atlas Corrigan. The book switches perspectives with each chapter, giving both Atlas and Lily their own points of view — "It Ends With Us" notably only featured Lily's — and deals with the clunky ending of the first novel, which sees Lily sharing custody of her daughter with her former abuser.
Putting aside the fact that Lively and Baldoni, who play Lily and Ryle in "It Ends With Us," may not return to play these characters, "It Starts With Us" is sort of a plodding story, all things considered. Still, the way audiences turned out for the first movie all but guarantees that a sequel will happen one way or another, so prepare yourself for a movie where Ryle keeps acting like an absolute jerk and Lily and Atlas (Brandon Sklenar) finally make their relationship work.
Probably Colleen Hoover's second-biggest book after "It Ends With Us," Verity is more of a thriller than Hoover's other romantic dramas — which doesn't necessarily mean it works as a thriller. We begin the book following Lowen Ashleigh, an author suffering from writer's block, who ends up meeting a man named Jeremy Crawford by chance after they both witness a violent accident. Jeremy soon reveals that his wife, the famous novelist Verity Crawford, is immobile after an accident and needs a ghostwriter for her next book, which leads to Lowen moving into the really creepy Crawford home.
It's relatively easy to guess a lot of the major plot twists in "Verity," to be frank. Lowen and Jeremy do strike up an inappropriate relationship, and through old diary entries from Verity herself, we learn about her relationship with Jeremy and the tragedy that befell their family years before her car accident. This is also the Hoover book where a character gets life-changing news while washing a chicken — a thing you should not do, actually — and then vomits on the raw chicken, so that should be really fun to watch when this inevitably gets its own film adaptation.
Another romantic drama that bears some basic similarities to "It Ends With Us" — in that it chronicles a deeply troubled and outright dysfunctional relationship — Colleen Hoover's novel "November 9" seems like a decent contender for an adaptation. The book is structured in a way that, to be quite honest, feels like a rip-off of David Nicholls' "One Day" ( which got adaptations on both the big and small screen ). When they're both just 18 years old, Fallon and Ben meet on the West Coast and spend just one day with each other, but because Fallon is preparing to move to New York, they agree to meet up every year on the same date. (You can probably guess which date.)
The reveal in this book is truly, absolutely outlandish — basically, we find out that Ben is the reason that Fallon's house burned down, which, okay?! — but the main couple end up together anyway, so all's well that ends well. Again, this whole plotline of meeting each other once a year to carry on some sort of relationship has been done to death, but "November 9" has Colleen Hoover's name slapped on it, so we could end up with yet another movie that feels suspiciously similar to "One Day" (although, ideally, this one won't feature Anne Hathaway sporting a particularly bad British accent).
All of Colleen Hoover's books could probably be called "Ugly Love" for one reason or another, but she chose this one, which focuses on the troubling romance between nurse Elizabeth "Tate" Collins and pilot Miles Archer. Tate and Miles definitely don't hit it off right away, but after he cuts his hand and she stitches it up, they kiss, at which point he tells her that she shouldn't "let" him do that again. This detente lasts for about one evening before Miles tells Tate they can make a deal: they can sleep together whenever they want but will never have a legitimate relationship, and Tate can never ask Miles about anything personal.
For plot reasons, Tate takes this relatively unappealing offer, and Hoover switches perspectives so that we can learn what happened to Miles — which ultimately boils down to a tumultuous young love that ends in the tragic death of Miles' son. Throughout "Ugly Love," Miles treats Tate like absolute crap, so it feels like "Ugly Love" might be sort of difficult to translate without making the male lead completely off-putting. Sure, they get a happy ending, but do audiences really want to sit through an entire film's worth of a traumatized man forcing distance between himself and the main love interest? (Maybe they do. Again, it's under the Colleen Hoover umbrella. This stuff sells.)
"Reminders of Him" has something with common with "It Starts With Us," in that both books ostensibly center around single parents (although Lily and Atlas' romance in the latter book definitely takes center stage over Emmy, who's more of a plot device than anything else). With that said, "Reminders of Him" takes a different approach in that its main character, Kenna Rowan, has just left prison and is trying to regain custody of her four-year-old daughter Diem — although the whole reason she was in prison is that she was responsible for a car accident that killed Diem's father Scotty. Naturally, Scotty's family really hates Kenna, and since they're the ones with custody of her daughter when she gets out of prison, the whole situation is an uphill battle.
There's a romance in this book too — with Ledger, Scotty's former best friend — but it mostly centers around Kenna's grief and guilt, even after Ledger uncovers information that reveals that Kenna might not be responsible for Scotty's death after all. "Reminders of Him" feels like a classic romantic tearjerker, so it would make as good of a movie as any of these, probably, but it's also one of the saddest books she's ever written, which might make it a tough watch.

Colleen Hoover is a massively bestselling author who specializes in romance and drama, often focusing on young adult protagonists. Her signature book, It Ends With Us , was a big hit and was recently adapted into a similarly successful movie . Hoover's relatable characters, emotionally charged narratives, and twisty plot have won her legions of fans and earned her a spot on Time magazine's 2023 list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Hoover is also a compelling example of a successful author in the social media age , who engages deeply with her fans and online and whose success is in no small part driven by TikTok. Her books can get a little formulaic and far-fetched, but they are undeniably juicy and sure to delight readers in search of dramatic romance. Those looking to give her books a try should start with her highest-rated novels on the book review site Goodreads.
Rating: 4.03/5.
"If you only shine light on your flaws, all your perfects will dim." All Your Perfects is Hoover's study of a troubled marriage. The story centers on Quinn and Graham, a couple whose relationship is tested by the trials of infertility and the strain it puts on their bond. The novel alternates between past and present, contrasting the beginning of their relationship with the challenges that later threaten to tear them apart.
This structure works well for slowly revealing more mistakes and secrets , adding more layers of complexity. The alternating perspectives also show how Quinn and Graham grapple with these issues individually. As a result, the book is something of an emotional rollercoaster, moving rapidly from hope to tragedy and back again. In terms of criticisms, some readers have argued that Hoover's books can be repetitive, offering only minor variations on the same central concerns. However, this is also what some fans like about her writing.
Rating: 4.04/5.
"You never want love again, no matter what kind it is." After Tate moves in with her brother, she meets the enigmatic Miles, who has sworn off love due to a traumatic past. Despite their intense attraction, Miles is clear about his inability to offer anything more than a physical relationship, leading them into a complicated arrangement where emotions are meant to be off-limits. However, as Tate becomes more entangled in Miles' life, she begins to unravel his painful secrets. Dangerous feelings naturally follow.
Once again, Hoover tells this story using dual timelines, which is effective. At times, the subject matter becomes very dark and intense, but the author handles these topics sensitively. Finally, a bevy of plot twists provide the remainder of the entertainment. It may not be one of Hoover's most memorable works, but Ugly Love will likely please those looking for a dramatic romance to dive into.
Rating: 4.09/5.
"There are people you meet that you get to know, and then there are people you meet that you already know." Confess follows Auburn Reed, a young woman whose life has been shaped by loss. Desperate for a fresh start, she stumbles upon an art studio where confessions from strangers are turned into paintings. There, she meets Owen Gentry, the artist behind the confessions, and they quickly form a deep connection. However, both Auburn and Owen carry burdens that threaten to keep them apart.
Their relationship is peppered with the expected banter, cute moments, and big emotional scenes. On the one hand, this is just a run-of-the-Mills-&-Boon romance, but there are some interesting ideas at play here. Chief among them is Owen's process of making art out of the intense, often painful confessions of ordinary people. This concept is complemented by actual artwork which is interspersed throughout the book, adding to the immersion.

"You'll never be able to find yourself if you're lost in someone else." Fallon and Ben meet by chance on November 9th, the day before Fallon is set to move across the country. Despite their instant connection, they agree to only meet once a year on that same date, with no communication in between, allowing each to pursue their individual dreams. In a parallel to David Nicholls ' One Day , the reader follows their live trajectories over a series of November 9ths.
This premise works, even if it's not wholly original. Hoover also juices the narrative up with her usual plot twists and startling developments. For example, it becomes clear that Ben has not been totally honest with Fallon about his life. The only noticeable negative in November 9 is some of the wince-inducingly awkward romantic scenes, where the characters say some awfully cliched things to each other. These chapters could've used a little more editing.
"Sometimes you have to walk away from the fight in order to win it." Morgan Grant has spent her life putting her family first, but her teenage daughter Clara is eager to break free from her mother's protective grasp. Their lives are shattered when a tragic accident uncovers long-buried secrets, forcing them to confront the truth about their family. They have to learn to forgive each other and themselves if they're to make it through.
The clashing personalities of mother and daughter drive the narrative tension , with Morgan concerned that Clara will repeat her own mistakes. Hoover does a good job of showing that these characters love each other while also struggling to be in the same room together. Structurally, the book unfolds in the present tense, alternating between chapters from Morgan and Clara's points of view. As a result, both characters are fleshed out well and their feelings are explained in-depth, making for a more complex read. This book, too, is set to be adapted into a movie .
Rating: 4.15/5.
"There is no such thing as bad people. We're all just people who sometimes do bad things." Hoover's most well-known book by far is It Ends with Us, which was just adapted into a film with Blake Lively . It's about Lily Bloom, a young woman who seems to have it all—her own business, a charming new love interest, Ryle Kincaid, and a bright future. However, as her relationship with Ryle deepens, dark secrets begin to surface, and Lily finds herself trapped in a cycle of abuse that mirrors the one her mother endured.
Yet again, Hoover handles tough issues with care , delving deep into the realities of abuse and toxic relationship dynamics. Importantly, the protagonist has a lot of inner strength, which makes this tale a lot more interesting. This recipe resonated with readers. It Ends With Us has sold over a million copies, been translated into twenty languages, and has more than one billion tags on TikTok.
Rating: 4.23/5.
"Love is a lot like water. It can be calm. Raging. Threatening. Soothing." Heart Bones is like a Taylor Swift song in novel form. The main character in this one is the aptly named Beyah Grim, who has spent her life in poverty and neglect. After a tragedy strikes, Beyah finds herself with no choice but to spend the summer with her estranged father in a wealthy coastal town in Texas. There, she meets the seemingly privileged Samson, and the two quickly strike up an unexpected connection. Unfortunately, external forces quickly complicate matters.
That the protagonists are young adults adds some freshness to the usual romantic formulas. Despite their traumas, the characters are a lot more idealistic and optimistic than Hoover's usual characters. They have a much less jaded view of love. The whole forbidden love/unhealthy romance angle is fairly well-worn at this point, and the ending is rushed, but intriguing characters carry it over the finish line.
Rating: 4.24/5.
"The sky is always beautiful, even when it's dark or rainy or cloudy." Hopeless is another solid young adult story from Hoover. It follows Sky Davis, a teenage girl who has been homeschooled her entire life and is now experiencing public high school for the first time. When she meets fellow student Dean Holder, she feels an intense connection to him, despite his troubled reputation. But she soon suspects that he's not everything he appears to be.
Hopeless dives right into the action, with the story kicking into gear from the first chapter. From there, the plot takes a number of twists and turns, pivoting in new directions just as it threatens to get stale. The characters are also less predictable than they are in many of Hoover's other books, acting like actual people rather than plot devices. This also builds up to a messy third act that avoids easy answers.
Rating: 4.31/5.
"I think the idea of me is better than the reality of me." Verity is something of a standout in Hoover's bibliography in that it's much of a thriller, though romantic and dramatic elements are present too. The story centers on Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who is hired to complete the bestselling series of the famous but incapacitated author, Verity Crawford. When Lowen moves into Verity's home to go through her notes, she discovers an unfinished autobiography hidden in Verity's office. The document contains horrifying revelations, and Lowen quickly grows paranoid about her new employer.
This is one of Hoover's most outlandish plots, which is both a good and bad thing. The writing is not her best, some of the characters are one-dimensional, and, at times, the book tries to do too much at once, haphazardly mashing genres together. Nevertheless, a propulsive narrative and a steady stream of steamy scenes are sure to hold the reader's attention.
Rating: 4.37/5.
"A good person who had one bad night. It happens to the best of us." Hoover's highest-rated book on Goodreads is this heart-wrenching tale of love and redemption. At the heart of it all is Kenna Rowan, a young woman who has just been released from prison after serving five years for a mistake that changed her life forever. Desperate to reconnect with her daughter, who was born while she was incarcerated, Kenna returns to her hometown, only to find herself shut out by everyone.
The only person who gives her a chance is Ledger, a local bar owner with ties to her past, sparking an odyssey of romance and soul-searching. The highlights here are the compelling protagonists, the deep dives into their minds, and the moving letters Kenna writes in prison to people both living and dead. It's classic Hoover, and the best place to start for those who enjoyed the It Ends With Us movie and want to check out the author's work.

Title: It Ends with Us Author: Colleen Hoover Publisher: Atria Publication date: 2016 Length: 386 pages Genre: Contemporary fiction Source: Borrowed Rating:
Sometimes it is the one who loves you who hurts you the most. Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up — she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true. Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place. As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan — her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.
Well, at least I can say that I’ve read a CoHo book…
I was pretty sure, based on everything I’ve heard, that Colleen Hoover’s books would not be for me. But the movie version of It Ends with Us has been generating so much buzz (negative and positive), and a friend was super excited to lend me this book… so yes, I finally read a Colleen Hoover book, and it went about as well as I’d expected.
Let me just note, right up front, that it is not okay that the synopsis of the book does not make the key point explicit: This book includes scenes of emotional and physical partner abuse and domestic violence. Readers need to know that ahead of time.
I’m not even sure what to say about this book. It’s the story of 23-year-old Lily, living on her own in Boston, who dreams of opening her own flower shop. She meets a gorgeous neurosurgeon on the roof of a building one night, and they start a game of “naked truths”, where they tell each other major secrets that they wouldn’t normally share with anyone. He’s not a relationship guy at all, but one of his naked truths is that he’d be happy to have a one-night stand with her (although he doesn’t phrase it quite that way). She’s looking for love, not sex, so it’s a no… but she’s mighty tempted.
As their paths continue to cross, the attraction grows, and eventually they do fall into a passionate relationship, but there are all sorts of warning signs.
Oh, why am I bothering to recap this book? Here’s what you need to know (spoilers ahead!):
So much of the plot makes no sense. Randomly moving from least offensive to much more offensive… Lily’s flower shop, for one thing — she opens a business in Boston, with no business plan or firm idea of what to do, has a ridiculous description of the aesthetic she’s going for, and yet is instantly, wildly successful.
Ryle’s sister becomes Lily’s best friend and first employee, totally redecorates Lily’s business, and provides whatever Lily needs, whenever she needs. She’s also described as never having had a job in her life, because her husband struck it mega-rich in tech… but really, she’s a grown woman who’s been rich for only a few years and never even had a part-time job?
Lily’s teenaged diaries are written as letters to Ellen DeGeneres. Why? There’s a reason provided, but it’s odd and unnecessary. We learn about her relationship with Atlas through these diaries, which later become something that ignites Ryle’s rage. (Also, the author seems to gloss over the fact that 15-year-old Lily enters into a romantic and sexual relationship with an 18-year-old, I guess because he’s so special and awesome? Just, no.)
After Ryle hits Lily for the first time, she forgives him after warning him that if anything like that every happens again, she’ll dump him. And then they move forward, and all is well and happy and she’s super in love, and they even have a spur-of-the-moment wedding in Las Vegas… but at no point does relationship counseling get mentioned.
We eventually learn about the childhood trauma that’s shaped Ryle, but if his anger is so uncontrollable, how does he function as a neurosurgeon?
Okay, that’s enough rambling. I did not enjoy this book, so why did I give it 2 stars?
If you’d asked me early on, I would have said that 1 star, or maybe 1.5, would be the highest I’d go, and despite how awful I think most of the book is, it was oddly compelling too. My experience reading It Ends with Us was similar to my experience reading Fifty Shades of Grey (yes, I read it…) — I was aware that it was not good, but I also wanted to see where the story went.
I will say that by the end, I could see how the messaging around domestic violence and the exploration of the emotions involved could be important to share. Lily absolutely loves Ryle, and through her first-person narration, we see the inner turmoil she goes through in trying to sort out her love for her husband, dealing with the memories of what she witnessed in her parents’ marriage, and understanding what safety and trust mean for her going forward.
Still, the ending of the book leaves Lily and Ryle in a place that feels unrealistically positive. They’re divorced, but share a child, and their custody arrangements seem courteous… but how does Lily know that she can trust Ryle with their baby? She makes the decision to leave him to end the cycle of violence that she experienced and to create a healthy life for her daughter, but how does that ensure that his anger won’t explode in the future, with Lily, her daughter, or someone else?
Finally, I’ll just mention that the sex scenes earlier in the book, when they’re first falling in love, are unappealingly explicit. There’s one in particular, where he uses a stethoscope to monitor her racing heart rate as she gets more and more into it — I’m sure it’s meant to be hot, but it’s actually just icky.
Clearly, I did not like this book. But I finished it, and it held my attention… so 2 stars seems fair.
And — I hate to even admit this — I’m probably going to read the follow up book ( It Starts with Us ) too. Maybe some of my complaints will be addressed! Maybe I just need to see if it’s as ridiculous as this one is. Maybe I just can’t help gawking at a train wreck.

CoHo’s books have been hit and miss for me. And I felt the same as you about ‘It Ends With Us’ there should be clear trigger warnings. It has been marketed as a romance, when its a love story (and a dark one at that.)
Enjoyed reading your review and look forward to your thoughts on the sequel.
Thank you! This should definitely not be marketed as a romance! I was curious about all the hype with the floral theme, and it really doesn’t seem to fit the tone of the novel.
Oh! Well I’m glad you read it and reviewed it here. I think I’ll pass, though her books are wildly popular at the library!
Her books seem to be incredibly popular, and they’re certainly all over the bestseller lists! I intend to read the sequel, just to see if I like what happens to the characters any better in the 2nd book… but overall, I don’t think she’s an author for me!
Ouch… but, I kinda expected this. I think I said that I blind read the opening of either this or one of her other books, without knowing which book or who it was by. I was so completely unimpressed, I knew that this wasn’t going to be an author for me… and it turned out to be Hoover. We’ll just stay over here in our “unpopular opinions of Hoover” club and let the rest of the world drool over every word she writes, without us!
Yes, I’ll be joining you in your club! I hated the first chapter and the way the characters spoke to each other. Somehow, I was interested enough to read the whole book, but other than reading the sequel (because I need to see if there’s any redemption for parts of the story), I won’t be back for more of this author.
I’ve never read a Colleen Hoover either so was interested to see what this review would be like. I can’t see myself reading ever now!!!!!
At least I can say that I’ve satisfied my curiosity and know that this author isn’t for me!
I’m not sure I’ve ever read Colleen Hoover and probably never will, and based on your review I wouldn’t pick this up, but I am sort of curious about the movie…
I’m curious about the movie too (mainly because the director/lead actor was a favorite of mine back when he was on Jane the Virgin) — there’s been controversy about how the movie has been marketed, and I’d like to see how it handles certain elements. We’ll see — once it’s available to stream (and free), I may still check it out.
Thank you for such an honest review! I was pretty sure I didn’t want to read this one after seeing the movie previews for it, but now I know it’s NOT the book for me. I really don’t like reading about such abusive relationships.
I really don’t either. Reading the author’s notes at the end helps to understand some of the choices she makes for the characters — but I still question a lot, and definitely feel that the focus on the love story aspects doesn’t do this book any favors.

Yes, Ugly Love by author Colleen Hoover is worth reading if you like extremely emotional love stories or tropes including friends with benefits, no strings attached, and/or second-chance romance. It's one of Colleen Hoover's most popular books, as well as Colleen Hoover's spiciest book — perfect for fans of steamy open-door romances.
In Ugly Love, the 'little bit more' from Colleen is woven into the chapters told from Miles' point of view. The text appears different, deliberately and tellingly so, the narrative both high and low, explicitly childlike yet cuttingly clear. But it's not until the very end of the novel that, if we've been paying enough close attention ...
