  • Module 1: Capstone Project Topic - The Problem of Adblocking
  • The Business Analytics Specialization was designed to help you learn how to think about using data in making big (and small) business decisions. In this Capstone project, you'll be asked to create a strategy for a fictional digital search engine and content provider, GoYaFace, Inc. (often abbreviated as “GYF”). The strategy will be used in responding to the increasing popularity and availability of “adblocking” software, which could have significant negative repercussions for GYF’s business. You are to assume the role of the leader of the Digital Advertising Tactics and Action (“DATA”) Team at GYF, which has been assigned the job of formulating GYF’s strategy in responding to the threat of adblocking. Your task is to develop a strategy that will be recommended to GYF’s senior leadership. Using what you've learned about business analytics, you'll (i) create a detailed problem statement focusing on GYF’s ad-buying customers (Module 2), (ii) develop a strategy (Module 3), (iii) describe the anticipated effects of the strategy (Module 4), and (iv) form a plan for measuring the effects of your strategy (Module 4). You'll then put these four pieces together into a final project (Module 5). First, please read the full description of the project in the “Project Description” link below, and then look at the background information about adblockers and the “GYF Company Profile” link in the content for Module 1. When you are ready to begin the first assignment, please move on to Module 2: Defining the Problem.
  • Module 2: Defining the Problem
  • In Module 2, you'll define the problem adblockers poses for GYF. GYF is intended to be a composite of leading internet platform and content providers who derive substantial revenues from mobile advertising like Google, Yahoo, and Facebook, so you should frame your research around the real-world problems these companies have faced and are facing. Defining the problem thoroughly will have a direct impact on how successful your strategy will be received by your peers. The more deeply you consider the effects of adblockers on the companies that buy advertising space from GYF, the more appropriate your overall strategy is likely to be. Please use the resources below to find out more about the problem, and then create your Problem Statement and submit it for peer review below. You can and should draw from all of the Business Analytics Specialization courses, but your Problem Statement should focus on how adblockers might adversely affect GYF’s relationship with the companies that pay GYF to place advertisements on GYF’s mobile applications and content. You should consider the issue of causality in your Problem Statement - we've included some lectures from the underlying courses to refresh you on that topci. And you are strongly encouraged to complete and include a response to Application Exercise 1 (see link below) as part of your Problem Statement.
  • Module 3: Your Strategy
  • In Module 3, you will focus on creating your recommended strategy for GYF to address adblockers. Your strategy does not have to be lengthy, but it must be clear, and it must address the problem. (Hint: if you have a clearly defined problem, your strategy is much more likely to be clearly defined as well). You'll be submitting your strategy for peer review, and then also reviewing the work of at least 3 of your peers. It's OK if reviewing the strategies of other learners in this course gives you further ideas for revising your own strategy. One of the primary benefits of peer review is to expand the range of feedback you can get, and we designed this Module around peer review so that you can get as much feedback as possible before moving on to the next phase of the project. You may find the resources and lectures below helpful in formulating your strategy and considering how data can be leveraged and appropriately understood. You are strongly encouraged to complete and include your response to Application Exercise 2 as part of your Strategy.
  • Module 4: Effects of Your Strategy/Measuring these Effects
  • Module 4 was designed to give you the opportunity to focus on the effects of your strategy. Effects and Measurement can be often overlooked in strategy development; creating a thoughtful and thorough plan for measuring the effects will improve your final project tremendously. In this part of the project, you will describe two events: what you think will happen and how you will measure it. Look to the courses in the Business Analytics Specialization to see what kind of data companies use to measure effects to create a measurement plan of your own. You are strongly encouraged to complete and include your responses to Application Exercises 3 and 4 as part of your Effects and Measurement components. You may create a scenario (Operations Analytics) to predict some of the intended effects of your strategy, either following the outline of Application Exercise 3, or of your own design. Once you submit your own plan for effects and measurement, please review the work of at least three of your peers. You may find new ideas, or new ways of looking at data and measurement from this exercise. We encourage you to incorporate what you've learned into your final submission!
  • Module 5: Final Project Submission
  • In this final Module, you will combine the four revised elements of your presentation (Problem Statement, Strategy, Effects, and Measurement, including any responses to the Application Exercises you've completed) into one presentation and submit it for peer review. You'll then be asked to review the work of at least three of your peers. Once you have gotten feedback on your plan, you may use it as an example of strategic thinking at your current job, or as a work sample when you are applying for a new one. A successful strategic analysis which describes the use of data-driven decision making will make you much more marketable in almost any field. Good luck!

Given the emphasis our Online MSBA program places on developing a well-rounded, multifaceted skill set, it is no surprise that the program concludes with a culminating collaborative analytics project. In the Business Analytics Capstone Project course, students are asked to apply everything they have learned in the program toward solving a challenging real-life business problem.

Each graduating cohort in the Online MSBA program will have a distinct capstone project experience featuring unique data sets provided by W&M’s impressive roster of corporate partners. This is no ordinary business school assignment: It’s your opportunity to deploy your new analytics, data visualization and communication skills on real data, with a real-world impact on a major organization’s strategic decisions and demonstrate excellence across each of the Online MSBA program’s four pillars .

Capstone Snapshot: Data Feast

The capstone experience for the Online MSBA cohort graduating in spring 2020 was the Data Feast competition , which pitted two teams of Online MSBA students against two teams of students from the on-campus MSBA program to analyze a data set and offer strategic insights to guide the expansion efforts of an up-and-coming sports and entertainment company. Two winners were declared in each of the areas of technical skills and business acumen, and the winners of the technical challenge was one of the two Online MSBA teams!

In the Capstone Project for Georgetown McDonough’s M.S. in Business Analytics (MSBA) program, you’ll apply the concepts, methods, and tools learned in the program to a challenging business analytics problem with a local, national, or global organization.

Over the course of two semesters, you’ll work with Georgetown’s faculty advisors and a group of other MSBA students to:

  • Define an organizational challenge.
  • Collect and analyze necessary data.
  • Assess possible courses of action.
  • Make a recommendation to the organization.
  • Present actionable insights to partners and McDonough faculty.

As you move through the Capstone Project, you’ll hone your skills with analytics tools, business functions, computing and technology, and value-based data analytics. Your experience from the Capstone Project will help you to stand out from other applicants as you seek to establish or advance your career.

The curriculum for Georgetown McDonough’s MSBA program includes a total of 18 courses, and each course lasts seven weeks. Part of the curriculum is a two-course Capstone Project, which will begin mid-residency and end with a final project presentation to a partner company/organization prior to graduation.

Capstone Project Timeline

Rather than moving toward a prescribed outcome, the Capstone Project and its goals should mimic the workplace by emerging organically from insights based on the data collected. To pace the Capstone Project appropriately, student groups adhere to the following timeline of project milestones.

Professor Sudipta Dasmohapatra

Sudipta Dasmohapatra is the academic director of the M.S. in Business Analytics (MSBA) and professor of the practice at the McDonough School of Business. She has worked with numerous industry partners and government and non-profit organizations on a variety of business analytics projects.

She has over 10 years of experience consulting in analytics and data science and served on the advisory boards of two strategic analytics start-up firms— Vertaeon, Inc. based in Atlanta, and Kloutics, Inc., based in Pune, India. She joined the board of the Statistical and Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI), an NSF-funded math and statistics institute, in July 2018 as the associate director of diversity. She holds a Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University.

Professor Gregory Lyon

Dr. Lyon is the Assistant Director for the Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) and Assistant Teaching Professor in Business Analytics at the McDonough School of Business. He has served as a data science consultant for projects ranging from survey research to global workforce development to regulatory compliance and has taught programming, analytics, and data science to students of all levels, including graduate students and working professionals. Dr. Lyon also holds multiple certifications in cloud computing and analytics including AWS cloud architecture (SAA-C02) as well specialized AWS cloud certifications in machine learning (MLS-C01) and data analytics (DAS-C01). Prior to Georgetown, he earned his Ph.D. at Rutgers University and was a postdoctoral researcher in data science and survey research at Tufts University.

The business analytics capstone experience allows students to work on real-world business problems using data and statistics..

Graduate students work with a UM-Dearborn faculty advisor and a mentor from a sponsoring company to model, analyze and recommend a solution for a significant business problem.

Sponsoring a Capstone Project

The curriculum for the Master of Science-Business Analytics  in the College of Business prepares students to deal with the challenging task of deriving deep insights from the vast array of structured and unstructured data in a variety of business areas. The program prepares students to pursue careers such as a data scientist or analyst.

Capstone Project Overview

The capstone project is the core of the MS-Business Analytics curriculum. This 15-week course emphasizes a team-based learning experience in which students conduct real-world analytics projects using data provided by the sponsoring organization. Since Winter 2016, students have completed 25 projects with 9 sponsoring organizations. Some of the industry sectors represented by our sponsors include manufacturing, healthcare, energy, retail, logistics, information technology, and service. Student projects have included optimal supply-chain logistics configuration, health-care services profitability analysis, predictive modeling for parts classification, analysis of customer satisfaction in a call center, forecasting weather-related power outages, data-modeling for smart mobility, augmented analytics & conversational analytics for data mining applications, information assurance trend analysis, and learning analytics.

Why Sponsor a Capstone Project

Sponsoring a project provides MS-Business Analytics students an opportunity to gain experience applying their coursework to real-world business problems.

It also offers the sponsoring organizations the opportunity to work with our students.  Many organizations make formal offers of employment to project participants after their work in the capstone project.

Only select students participate in the Capstone course.  These students are selected on the basis of:

  • Superior academic performance in the graduate program.
  • Successful completion core courses in statistical modeling and analysis, optimization, forecasting, and data mining.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Course Deliverables:

  • A formal written project report.
  • A software demonstration (if developed for a particular application)
  • A public presentation summarizing the project results.

There is no cost to sponsor a project.

Requirements for Sponsor

  • A project lead who will interface with the student team and Faculty Coordinator on all project matters.
  • 2 to 3 hours each week for meetings with the student team, either in person or online.
  • A brief, well-defined problem statement. The solution to the problem must require quantitative analysis, such as statistical analysis, optimization, predictive modeling, data mining, visual analytics, and exploratory analysis.
  • A prepared data set that requires data modeling, such as data cleansing, data preparation, data normalization, data merging, or data parsing. Students must be able to analyze the data using natural languages, such as R or Python.

Project teams sign a non-disclosure agreement to protect the privacy of the data and other information shared by the sponsor. Sponsors may anonymize business-sensitive information and other technical details.

Project Details

At the start of the semester, the sponsor and students meet to discuss the following: 

  • The organization’s business problem.
  • The specific goal of the data analytics project.
  • A description of the available data.
  • Project-meeting schedules between the sponsoring organization and the student team.

The goal of the project is for students to:

  • Understand and clearly define the business decision problem.
  • Process and analyze data.
  • Design, model and develop a solution.

During the project, student teams maintain regular communication with the project sponsors through scheduled site visits, web meetings and weekly progress updates. The Faculty Coordinator tracks project progress with technical reviews and updates with the student teams throughout the semester.  In addition, the Faculty Coordinator and project sponsors jointly conduct mid-term progress reviews and provide feedback to the student teams.

The University provides student teams with access to an extensive portal of prominent software in a cloud-based environment, which students will use on their projects.

At the conclusion of the project, the student teams will make a public presentation of their findings to the sponsor, College of Business faculty, staff and students.

The Capstone project course is offered two times a year, during Fall and Winter semesters. We welcome your inquiries about sponsoring a Capstone project. We are always planning for projects for upcoming semesters. The tentative schedule is as follows:

Capstone Projects for Winter 2023

Automated alert system for the application program interface management tool at the university of michigan.

This study presents the development of an automated mechanism for log and user affiliation change monitoring using Python scripts. The current practice of manual log queries and affiliation change observations is not only cumbersome but also poses potential security risks due to delays in observation. To address this, the proposed solution automates the process of accessing the application system and logs to generate alerts. The use of Python scripts enables efficient performance and scalability while reducing the need for manual involvement. The developed solution is expected to improve the overall security and monitoring of the system by providing real-time alerts and reducing response time.  Though, the current solution of the study is via python scripts, Splunk's built in alert system and pubsub were also thought of as alternatives but were not feasible for security concerns and lack of ability to specialize respectively.

Study of an Accessibility Tool for a Learning Management System at the University of Michigan

The University of Michigan is devoted to providing a learning environment that is comprehensively accessible, a fact exemplified by the Electronic and Information (EIT) Standard Practice Guide (SPG) of 2022. In line with the university’s accessibility goals, Information Technology Services (ITS) at the university endorsed the Universal Design Online Content Inspection Tool (UDOIT), an automated accessibility checker tool used at the university since 2019. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought about pressing circumstances that halted ITS’s promotion of the tool and clouded their understanding of its usage at the university. This study leverages learning analytics to drive ITS’s assessment of the efficacy of UDOIT as an accessibility tool. It utilizes the concepts of Axiomatic System Design to systemize the design process. The study expounds the methodology used to construct a complete dataset using UDOIT output. Using a predefined set of research questions, the study conducts a full-scale analysis of the dataset, leveraging descriptive statistics with data visualization to identify patterns in the usage of UDOIT across semesters, colleges, users, and more. The study concludes with a structured summary of results and a user manual allowing ITS to replicate this analysis. Insight gained from this study will guide future UDOIT training and support ITS’s efforts towards enhancing digital accessibility at the University of Michigan.

User Behavior Analysis of Learning Management System - Pre, During and Post Covid

Canvas learning management system. The study identifies the module design and item addition patterns of faculty in Canvas and their relation to student behavior in traversing through course modules. Additionally, the study aims to determine the level of Canvas awareness among faculty and propose instructional design improvements to enhance the user experience. The analysis revealed an increase in the percentage of courses that have only the 'modules' tool enabled on the left-hand navigation during the During-Covid and Post-Covid timeline. The study also provided information on the percentage of courses in each department that used different tools during different terms. The navigational analysis of Canvas usage by learners across different academic units revealed that the School of Social Work stood out in terms of the frequency of tools accessed. Interestingly, despite the expectation that the School of Public Health would have the highest percentage of module usage due to receiving the highest level of instructional support, this was not the case. Providing instructional support can significantly enhance user engagement with Canvas. The analysis suggests that ITS teaching and learning prioritize the implementation of instructional support across all academic units to facilitate continuous user engagement with course content, as evidenced by the higher usage of the Modules tool throughout active sessions. Based on the findings, the study recommends exploring several areas for further investigation, including analyzing child tools usage, exploring the correlation between student grades and time spent on Canvas, and analyzing user navigation for external tools integrated with Canvas. These findings can help identify areas that require more instructional support to improve the user experience on Canvas.

Recent Projects

Evaluating the use of my learning analytics (myla) within canvas at the university of michigan.

My Learning Analytics (MyLA) is an optional additional dashboard design tool embedded within Canvas. It offers assignment planning, grade calculations, and resources accessed features to help students engage in self-regulated learning. We analyzed student, course, and log data for 3,929 students enrolled in 61 courses offering the MyLA tool over 4 terms. Using this data, patterns of student activity were identified with the tool and tested for correlation between the use of the tool and course performance.

Multiple methods were developed to classify and separate students into two groups: users of the tool and non-users. The data was used to identify any similar academic or demographic characteristics among students. After analyzing the data, it was determined that there is a significant positive difference between users and non-users of the MyLA program when it comes to course performance. This difference in final course grade increases in magnitude and significance when users are determined by having two or more distinct weeks active in MyLA.

University of Michigan Information and Technology Services - Vulnerability Trend Analyses

This project identified and analyzed all the departments across the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor that are vulnerable to hacking.

The student team used  Tenable.io , an industry-standard tool used to identify hacking risks within an organization's IT systems. The tool provided a massive data set containing all UM IP addresses, each of which was rated as far as its vulnerability to a cyber attack. Students matched this list with a file containing department names and their corresponding subnets.

Students performed data wrangling and data filtering on these two files to retain IP addresses corresponding to severe CVSS (common vulnerability severity rating) and VPR (vulnerability priority rating) ratings. Students then used the Python tool  ipaddress  to map IP addresses and IP subnets from either of the files to produce a list of the departments that are most vulnerable to hacking. After the mapping process, students analyzed and created a data visualization of the list of IP subnets and departments to identify how often each department was flagged a vulnerable to hacking. The students repeated this analysis over three consecutive months.

The students' work identified the UM departments which are the most vulnerable to hacking -- which turned out to be UM's Information Technology Services itself, followed by the College of Engineering.

University of Michigan Project: Conversational Analytics Using Google Dialog Flow

With the rise of messaging apps and social media technology being used as a main form of communication, U-M's Office of Budget and Planning wants to be able to quickly and conveniently analyze student survey data over the last 5 years. Gathering useful information about student needs and expectations is vital to help the University decide which technologies they should adopt to communicate with students to maintain a better student-university relationship. Chatbot and Voice Assistant are primarily being used to support staff by gathering the information they need from the student survey data. This project will task students to utilize Google assistant to answer questions and Dialog-flow to create a seamless interaction between users and system.

University of Michigan Project: Augmented Analytics and Visualization of Student Services Activities

U-M’s Information Technology Services has collected a lot of data over the years through various activities across the Ann Arbor campus. The Office of Budget and Planning wants its staff to have the ability to run reports and gain insights from the UMay survey data. Students will be tasked to design a model by implementing and creating Augmented Analytics that will connect the end-user to this large set of raw data. This will include the ability to process verbal queries and respond with visual analytics, which will make it easier for the end-user to understand the results.

Process for Generating an Origin-Destination Demand Matrix for Use in a Commuter Ride-sharing Simulation at Ford Smart Mobility

Ford Motor Company has expanded into mobility services with the purchase of a startup company, Chariot, which offers a carpooling service to commuters in select urban areas and uniquely allows potential customers to vote on new commuter routes. To support Ford and Chariot in identifying new commuter routes in cities where the company is not operating, this research effort created a process that simulates commuter origin and destinations, the number of commuters, and time of departure. The process selected San Francisco, CA as a starting point in part for verification purposes because Chariot already has operations in the city. Results indicate the process properly simulated commuter flow. Specifically, commuter’s origin locations were highly dispersed across San Francisco, but the destination locations indicate commuters are traveling towards areas of high employment. The process also accurately simulated departure times associated with the rush hour commute. In summary, the process created can be replicated to model commuter traffic patterns in other cities and identify where large of commuters are traveling from and to and during what time of day. Thus, the process provides Ford and Chariot commuter data to help guide early business decisions. An end-to-end analytics framework was utilized to process publicly available data from a very large number of sources by utilizing advanced data mining, visual analytics and simulation techniques to generate traffic flow inputs for advanced transportation network and simulation models.

Modeling for Predicting Power Outages due to Weather Events for DTE Energy

DTE Energy, the electrical service provider for Southeast Michigan, allocates a great deal of resources toward managing outages, particularly those caused by big weather events. This research project aimed to develop a series of models which are geographically sensitive (at the service center level) to predict number of power outages per day based on weather data. Using an ensemble of neural networks, a model for each service center was created that is sensitive to three different scenarios. These models, specifically those belonging to the four service centers which experience the greatest number of electrical service interruptions, predict number of outages in that service center to an industry benchmark level of accuracy. Further, one scenario—high temperature and high wind speed days—predicts outages substantially beyond industry benchmarks. Finally, we discuss our attempt at a more time sensitive model, predicting outages hourly. An end-to-end data analytics framework was utilized to process large disparate datasets by utilizing advanced data mining techniques to cleanse, merge and prepare data for modeling utilizing predictive modeling, and classification & forecasting algorithms. This work has enabled DTE Energy to better plan their labor and other resources in restoring power in a more efficient manner.

An Analytics Approach to Managing Inbound Call Support at Stefanini IT Solutions

Harnessing the power of data and analytics is the first step in driving operational efficiencies for the business of the future. Stefanini is looking to gain data driven insights into two of their existing call-center processes – inbound call handling process and the existing service ticket creation process. Stefanini currently maintains and captures data related to these two processes separately. The purpose of this project is to combine the call related data with the corresponding tickets and assist Stefanini to gain a better understanding of on what impact the issue types have on the duration of the calls. The analysis will also help Stefanini identify key areas to drive automation, deploy additional employee trainings and optimize the existing staffing models that can eventually generate operational efficiencies for the company. An end-to-end analytics framework was designed by effectively combining the two disparate data sets by utilizing exploratory data analytics, visualization and advanced analytics techniques to generate key insights to help drive efficiencies and automation for Stefanini.

Step 2: Leverage your analytics micro-team

As part of your capstone experience, you and another SMB-A student manage a small analytics team in a real-world setting, which occurs in a spring Pre-Capstone course.

About the Pre-Capstone

The Pre-Capstone is a data and methods preparatory curriculum in advance of the summer term. This curriculum continues discussions of problem structuring, begun in the Fall. It includes a 10-week Micro-Team experience where SMB-A students manage and collaborate with a junior analyst and advisory faculty member. By its design, and exposure to additional analytics tools, the Pre-Cap ensures you'll be well-prepared for successful independent Capstone work in the Summer term. A typical team is as follows:

Step 3: Put theory into practice

To help guide initial thoughts and the ultimate development of the project and its deliverables, SMB-A students and their teams will make use of several frameworks. Examples include the OUtCoMES Cycle, Systems-Oriented A3, and the Management Analytics Decision-Tree. These resources, and more, are introduced and utilized during 1-hour advisory sessions every two weeks during the autumn and spring semesters, which lead into the summer when you will move to two 1-hour advisory sessions every week for seven weeks. An iterative process used to structure otherwise unstructured or poorly structured real-world problems. The approach identifies core performance objectives, critical levers, and salient limitations on managerial decision-making. Systems-Oriented A3

To support documentation throughout the OUtCoMES Cycle and assist in the final capstone presentation, students and their teams complete both a preliminary A3 for early feedback on project plans and a final A3 as part of your final project report. No matter your analytics experience level, Fisher teaches proven real-world business-analytics techniques and provides high-value resources to support your development and career growth.

To help you think about the analytical tools and tactics that might prove useful in each stage of your project journey, the International Institute for Analytics provides a decision-tree framework.  This framework can guide you in selecting analytical approaches from descriptive, to predictive and through prescriptive stages of your work. The M.S. in Business Analytics capstone project is designed to develop your problem-framing, teamwork, project management and communication skills while integrating all of your previously gained technical knowledge by managing a business analytics project using real datasets provided by clients and other relevant databases.

Built around student teams, the capstone project gives students the opportunity to provide business analytics solutions to real organizations under the guidance of on-site corporate managers and faculty members. Potential capstone projects cover a wide range of industries in the Los Angeles area, with a focus on engaging the surrounding Silicon Beach community.

The LMU M.S. in Business Analytics Advisory Board is highly involved with our program's capstone projects, providing guidance and support in the development of the curriculum, as well as directly to the student teams throughout their project.

Past capstone projects include:

  • Fandango: Analyzed and predicted theater occupancy based on past sales data, movie data and other external data sources to provide strategic insights for marketing, pricing and operational decisions.
  • RMDS + Future Data Lab: Analyzed how retail agglomeration affects business performance using geographic information systems, census data and business performance data in order to effectively design retail conglomeration.
  • Qdoba: Assessed the performance of stores in multi-unit retailing systems by using the synthetic control method to create a synthetic benchmark store for evaluating new management teams, A/B testing for products and promotions, and competitor impact on a store.
  • RPA: Analyzed consumer behavior during the COVID-19 crisis using a wide range of consumer data from Natural Language Processing, Convolution Neural Network and other mining techniques to provide insights for RPA to better communicate and design post-crisis advertising messages for their clients.
  • Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles: Analyzed past patient behavior to build a predictive model for patient appointment cancellations and no-shows to plan appropriate levels of staffing without compromising the level of service or wait times.

Applied Analytics Project (AAP)

A unique and attractive proposition.

The AAP is a 10-week project serving as the students' comprehensive exam, and it should represent their best efforts.​

NDA: A standard nondisclosure agreement protects the client and all data, and it provides full ownership to the client in the end.

Time: Clients agree to meet with their team six to eight times during the project.

Data: Clients provide UCLA data access for the sole purpose of solving the related strategic problem. Access is necessary for project completion, when all data is returned to client.

A Comprehensive Process and Analysis

Teams, balanced in their skills, work with faculty and the client from the experimental design phase to deep analysis to model building, and then communicate their results and recommendations.

The Applied Analytics Project (AAP) serves as a capstone to the Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) curriculum and represents an opportunity to merge theory and principles with up-to-the-minute business practice. The hands-on AAP helps prepare our students for a career in quantitative analysis and data science by testing their ability to solve complex analytical business problems in real-world settings. MSBA candidates also hone their communication skills and delve deeply into an area of interest beyond the classroom. The UCLA Anderson MSBA program takes pride in this important partnership with the analytics community and invites you to take a closer look at the benefits available to both corporate clients and students.

Program Structure

The process.

Our students will begin by gathering all of the information necessary to understand the organization and the analytics question at hand. In the same period, the client organization will be gathering and organizing any data that the team will analyze. They will work with you and their faculty advisor to determine which business analytics approach is best suited to your problem, and they will then apply that method to analyze your data.

Finally, the team will report on their findings and any newly developed analytical practices.

The outputs of this exercise may include

  • New statistical insights previously unavailable to the company
  • New metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Process optimization recommendations and models
  • Predictive and prescriptive analytics approaches
  • Data management recommendations
  • People and process recommendations to support your data science practice
  • Requirements
  • Quantitative data of reasonable quality and in sufficient quantity to serve as a project
  • Two client contacts who will serve as primary and secondary project contacts for the team
  • Regular progress calls with the team during the active phase of the project (October–December)
  • All parties sign standard UCLA Anderson nondisclosure agreement

How to Apply

Please submit your application online at our program website. We will review your applications and schedule a short application review call to clarify any questions and to confirm your interest.

Student teams will then review the lead list and a bid-and-match process will be used to match teams with projects.

This project description will set the scope of the project and align all parties’ expectations. It will include:

  • A short background and review of related research
  • The scope of the project
  • The data required and planned data sources

Students will complete secondary research over the summer and will present a refined scope to the company and their advisor at the beginning of the following quarter. The goal is to have all required data assembled during the summer and made available to students at the start of fall quarter. Throughout the fall quarter, students and client will hold conference calls at least once every two weeks.

In early November, students will submit a midpoint report on the project, and the final report will be completed in early December.

The Seattle University Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS) is focused on the study of data-driven decision making. Our interdisciplinary program from the Department of Mathematics combines the developmental aspects of statistics and computer science to bring data analysis and modeling to bear on real-world problems.

The MSDS is 45 credits and can be completed in 6-7 academic quarters, with evening courses suited to working professionals.

HIMT Program Director Guides Students Through Capstone Project

Elizabeth “Betty” Rockendorf, MS, RHIA, CHTS-IM, CHPS, is a program director for the University of Wisconsin Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management and Technology (HIMT) at UW-Parkside . Like many in the 100 percent online program, Betty’s own experience with higher education began as a nontraditional student.  

Betty began her career out of high school, working as a legal secretary. She worked in various secretarial roles until her 30s, when she decided to enroll in college. With no online learning options at the time, she drove 80 miles roundtrip between her home and UW-Green Bay to attend classes. She landed a job on campus, which allowed her to work and go to school in the same location while completing her Bachelor’s degree in business administration and management.

As a woman in the STEM field , Betty has had an extensive career in health information management. Her first role in healthcare was as a medical transcriptionist for the Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. During her tenure, she advanced to Supervisor of Transcription and would later become the medical center’s director of health information management and privacy officer.

Betty has been an instructor at UW-Parkside for eight years and teaches five courses in the online HIMT program, which is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management programs (CAHIIM) . Some of her courses include:

Betty says she’s most proud of her contributions to the capstone and pre-capstone courses, where she coordinates all of the capstone placements. The capstone project gives students hands-on experience by allowing them to work with real-world clients. Some have even received job offers and earned promotions upon completing the capstone.  

Whether you’re already working in healthcare or are new to the field, Betty works closely with students to ensure they have a positive experience. As a member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) , she also connects with her professional network to help students find capstone sites.

“It’s been a very rewarding experience to be the capstone coordinator and instructor because, [with] our program being online, we have students in all these different states,” she said. “So I get to meet and talk with a lot of people as I work to set up these capstone internships.”

To date, more than 280 students in the course have partnered with capstone sites across 26 states.

In the following Q&A, we spoke with Betty to learn more about what students can expect from the capstone project. 

What’s the most common question or concern that students have regarding the capstone?

People are nervous and anxious about it because they feel like they’re being thrown out there into the world, and they are. The goal of the UW HIMT program is to build up student skills and confidence so they can demonstrate the competencies they have learned. I can give them some pointers about what to expect, but everybody’s capstone is a little different, so there isn’t one set “This is what everybody’s going to go through.” 

The reason it’s different is because the people are all different. Some have already been working in healthcare, and they might even be working in a health information management department. I’ve got other people who’ve never stepped foot in an HIM department, and so they really don’t know what to expect. 

Everybody has a different capstone supervisor, too, at the facility. Some people are very involved with the student, and then others assign them to different staff members. That differs a little bit too, but I’m always here to help. So get to know your capstone supervisor, decide on a project that you’re going to work on, and then we usually meet after that. 

A couple weeks into the semester, we’ll have a Zoom meeting with the capstone supervisor, the student, and myself. We talk about any questions or anything that’s come up. I would say, for almost 99 percent of the time, the students are pleasantly surprised because, again, health information management professionals—we’ve all been there. We’ve all been that student. 

So they really take these students under their wing, and they really want to see them succeed. And so they’re very helpful. I think once the student sees that, then the anxiety goes away, and they start to feel a little more confident.

When should I start preparing for my capstone project?

I am available if people have questions early on. I’m happy to schedule a time to meet with them and talk with them because that helps with their anxiety. Some students are just looking for advice too. 

If they have absolutely no healthcare experience at all, they might be asking me, “Would you suggest that I try to get a job in healthcare or that I try to do some volunteer work at a local hospital?” The answer is “yes.” If you have no healthcare experience, it is very beneficial to look for volunteer opportunities early in the academic program.  

I like to hear those kinds of questions, because I do think that’s a good idea for them to get started early on. By their second semester, at least start thinking about it.

What types of capstone projects have students completed in the past?

Before the electronic health record, there were all the paper files and paper charts, and there still is paper in healthcare. It’s not all electronic, because they still use a lot of scanners to scan paper documents in so that they can get it into the electronic version. 

For a lot of people, when they get to the capstone, that’s something that really surprises them. I’ve had several students now who have been involved in huge projects to purge paper records. And you can’t just dispose of them because you must comply with retention laws and regulations. Depending on what kind of a facility it is, they have different retention standards.

I’ve had students that have been involved in some of these big cleanup projects, and one was just last semester. He was working for the State of Wisconsin, Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Management Services-Bureau of Records Management. They had warehouses full of paper medical records that needed to be scanned in. That’s one agency that has to keep them for a long time, so he was involved in this large-scale scanning project, and it was very interesting.

We’ve had a few students who have been involved in delivering education to staff, like HIPAA privacy and security education. Those are always nice because it gives the student a chance to teach what they’ve learned. 

Others have developed dashboard documents for HIM managers, conducted process improvement activities, created back-up plans if the electronic health record is out of service, analyzed denials from payors, audited medical coding, and contributed to a data governance plan. Students have researched and recommended plans for outsourcing operations such as release of information, or assessed the feasibility of having staff work remotely. 

The list is endless, and placement is based on each student’s interests, among other factors.

What if my project doesn’t go as planned or something unexpected happens?

Maybe the capstone placement isn’t a good fit, and the person doesn’t really hit it off well with the site supervisor for whatever reason. In today’s world, everybody is so busy. It seems in a lot of places, people are expected to do more with less staff. 

If we identify that early enough that there’s still time for me to find them another placement, I can do that. If they really aren’t enjoying their capstone placement, I can usually find them something else.

So they’re told to talk about contingency planning. If they start a project and that project just isn’t working out, or maybe the organization finds out that the funding isn’t there for a particular project to move forward, we’re very flexible because we can pick a different project. 

I’ve also had organizations say, “I have a project, but I don’t know if it’s going to meet the required number of hours because the capstone is 80 hours.” My rule of thumb is to spend 40 hours working on a project, and then spend 40 hours doing some job shadowing, attending meetings, and learning what you can about the whole department or the organization. 

If something isn’t working, I have meetings and get involved and see if we can make it work because it’s a last resort to have to switch to a different capstone altogether.

What’s the number one thing you want students to know about the capstone?

The number one thing is that it’s a wonderful hands-on experience for the students. They’ve taken all these courses, and it all culminates in that final semester when they’re taking the capstone.

Especially for the students that are new to healthcare, it’s such a wonderful opportunity for them to meet the people personally, do some job shadowing, and observe all the various roles in HIM, because there’s a lot. They get to ask questions, and they get to try to determine what path they would like to take after graduation.

The field is so broad and there’s so many roles that they could do, and it’s hard for a student to say, “Well, I want to do this or I want to do that.” But after the capstone, if they’ve had a chance to really experience some of those things, they get a definite feel for what they like. And then they can say, “That’s what I want to do.” That sets them out on the path to do it. 

I tell them to ask questions of the person. If they like what the clinical documentation improvement specialist is doing, just ask that person, “How did you get to this point?” And they’ll walk you through. They may have started at an entry-level position, then moved on to the next step, and perhaps somewhere along the way they had an opportunity to work on a project that led them in a different direction. 

It shows people a real-life pathway. We can see that on a career map that’s available through AHIMA, but it’s always nice to talk to somebody who’s really walked the walk. And they know just what it took to get where they are.

Business Analytics Practicum Projects Equip Students for Real-World Scenarios

Poole students gain invaluable opportunities to use their skills in a global marketplace increasingly reliant on analytics to help guide companies’ success.

Seth Freeman didn’t realize how crucial clear communication is in the workplace until he was involved with a project through Poole’s Business Analytics Initiative (BAI) practicum program.

The project quickly convinced him.

In the practicum last fall, before the accounting major graduated in December, his team addressed a business challenge for Labcorp, a life sciences and healthcare company. 

“What I took away was about working with an actual client, trying to understand what they needed, clarifying what we asked for, and following up on our request so they knew what we needed,” Freeman says. “It showed me the true nature of that kind of work and gave me good experience in a real-world scenario.”

Those real-world scenarios give students invaluable, semester-long opportunities to use their skills in a global marketplace increasingly reliant on analytics to help guide companies’ success. Students apply knowledge they’ve gained in the classroom to take on the challenges in the practicums. 

The business analytics practicum courses offer Poole-employer partnerships for students in the undergraduate Business Analytics Honors Program and the two Master of Management programs ( Marketing Analytics and Risk and Analytics ) and the Business Analytics Graduate Certificate Program (comprising primarily Jenkins MBA students). 

In Freeman’s practicum, his team conducted a cost analysis with data Labcorp provided. 

“A lot of figuring out how to break down the problem Labcorp presented us and creating a solution were based on processes the honors program classes taught us,” Freeman says. He used what he’d learned in courses on databases, data organization and analytics.   

In another practicum through the Business Analytics Honors Program, Garrett Auriene’s team created a forecasting model for the retailer Sonic Automotive.

“A class that focused on prediction and forecast modeling really carried over to the practicum,” says Auriene, who learned to manipulate data with software tools.

Terry Song completed the business analytics graduate certificate program, part of Poole’s Jenkins MBA, and the practicum last fall. He worked on a team to develop a forecasting model related to some of Volvo Group’s freight carriers and distribution centers.

The certificate program provided “a seamless transition from foundational knowledge to practical application in solving real-world data science problems,” Song says. He’s a staff systems engineer at Parker Hannifin, a motion-and-control-systems manufacturer in Cary, North Carolina.

Song, a student in the online MBA program, cites several MBA analytics classes that were useful in the Volvo Group project. “These courses equip students with a robust foundation of knowledge and tools necessary to tackle real-world analytics challenges in the context of the practicum project,” he says.

Students’ success in the practicums comes in part from employer resources.

Amit Prakash, who was in Poole’s business analytics honors program, led the practicum project for his team with Envestnet, which developed a framework for customer profiling.

The company provided a list of its project requirements and any technical support students needed. “That really helped us tailor a deliverable to them,” says Prakash, a 2023 business administration and computer science major.

Poole’s employer partners have skin in the game because of the value they get from the practicums. 

“I’m a big believer in university-industry relationships,” says Matt Mallard, head of transport flow optimization for Volvo Group North America, based in Greensboro, North Carolina.

“I’m interested in what students can accomplish for us that I can’t accomplish with my team, mainly because of time — we can’t get to those things. And with some projects, we don’t have the needed expertise in house,” Mallard says. 

For several semesters, Poole students have worked with Volvo Group on predictive analytics projects. The model students have developed will help Mallard’s team with the sales and operations planning process related to supply chain logistics flows. 

“We’re far enough along to have a model we can put into production and use soon. I’m anticipating this should become an integral part of that process,” says Mallard, who is enrolled in Poole’s business analytics graduate certificate program himself.

“Students have been really engaged in the work. They have good questions,” he says. “The projects are moving forward in a good way.” 

Poole graduates use their BAI practicum experience to move their careers forward, too. 

In his practicum, Prakash assigned tasks to peers based on their areas of specialty: economics, IT, finance. “I learned a lot about what project management looks like, what I need to improve on and what I do best,” says Prakash, an associate web developer at Prometheus Group, a software company based in Raleigh.  

Auriene uses business analytics daily as a database engineer with First Citizens Bank. 

In the practicum, “You get real working experience, working with company data…It was very helpful for transitioning into the full-time role I have now and the perfect preparation for me, working with database management and learning about forecasting,” Auriene says.   

Freeman, an audit intern with accounting firm PwC in Raleigh, will enroll in Poole’s Master of Accounting program this summer. 

“The business analytics practicum and honors program will be vastly helpful in my long-term career approach. I’m prepared for what may happen in the accounting industry because I’ve been exposed to data analytics,” he says.  

That gives Freeman an edge in a competitive field.

“In talking with upper-level management in my accounting firm, they understand the importance of analytics,” he says. “It’s a good tool for the future.”

The College has robust resources to assist, strengthen and enhance an organization’s abilities to gain competitive advantages from data, further innovative marketing efforts armed with consumer insight and market research, and employ strategic sourcing and management of supply chain and logistics. These multiple opportunities can be driven through collaboration with our Centers of Excellence: the Center for Business Analytics and Applied AI, the Center for Marketing and Consumer Insights, and the Center for Supply Chain Management, and graduate student teams.

Our centers are connection points between the college and Oregon’s business community. Moreover, we work closely with our partners to curate engagement opportunities at the college and look for their thoughtful insights.

Project Composition

Projects focus on a case scenario provided by you, guided by your business challenge. You offer background information and data, training information and the challenge.

These projects solve challenges, further the goals of your organization, and become part of the learning experience at the College of Business. Faculty assemble student teams, which consist of five to ten graduate-level students, who on average have six years of industry experience and are in the MBA or MBS programs.

The student teams work with faculty and company representatives to develop complex, team-oriented solutions – an excellent training ground for working in industry and developing expertise. By embedding corporate challenges into the classroom, we mirror the experiences graduates face in their careers.

Our student research projects originate from many different areas within a company including accounting, analytics, applied AI, customer discovery, market research, supply chain and logistics management or talent management. Both students and our partners benefit from these projects. Students further develop project management, teamwork and communication skills. Our partner organization accesses student creativity and expertise with faculty oversight while assessing potential intern or workforce candidates.

Fervent Consolidation Efforts Spur HVAC Services Sector M&A Activity

The characteristically fragmentated Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Services merger and acquisition (M&A) market has witnessed a rise in transaction volume through year-to-date (YTD) 2024 as sector players expand service offerings and geographic footprint. Driven by smaller acquisitions of private businesses, tuck-ins have materialized at a pace mirroring 2021, when deal flow in the broader M&A market was at an all-time high. Private and public strategics have continued to employ inorganic strategies to accelerate growth. Of note, Sila Heating & Air Conditioning has spurred a rise in private strategic deals. Sila, a provider of residential HVAC, plumbing, and electrical services in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, has made 27 acquisitions since receiving a minority stake investment from Morgan Stanley Capital Partners (MSCP) in May 2021 (undisclosed). The company announced three acquisitions in April, consisting of T-Mark Plumbing, Essential Power Systems, and Glasco Heating & Air Conditioning. Terms for the deals were undisclosed. Additionally, public strategics have demonstrated an appetite for M&A, leveraging strong cash positions on balance sheets to make acquisitions. Leading building services provider, Limbach Holdings (Nasdaq:LMB), has pursued inorganic growth to bolster its Owner Direct Relationships (ODR) segment, a high margin business less impacted by macroeconomic trends. “By expanding and evolving our service offerings, we believe that we can grow market share with existing customers and position Limbach for recurring revenue streams from these ODRs while flexing with our customer needs between operating and capital project budgets. All this equals a business with attractive organic and acquisition growth opportunities, less volatility, and more consistent execution,” Mike McCann, President and CEO of Limbach, said on the Q1 earnings call. 1 The HVAC Services M&A market is expected to continue its upwards trajectory in 2024 as public and private players target complementary service offerings and geographic synergies.

The current market environment is favorably tilted towards service providers that have critical mass (i.e. EBITDA in excess of $10 million) and a hefty orientation toward preventive maintenance and repairs (i.e. recurring revenue). Defensible Demand for Maintenance and Repair Reinforces HVAC Services M&A Market

Technologically advanced industrial applications for HVAC parts and systems have proliferated across the broader sector, bolstering the necessity for continued service, maintenance, and repair, as outlined in Capstone Partners’ April 2024 HVAC Equipment Sector M&A Update . This demand has facilitated a robust 12.3% year-over-year (YOY) growth in HVAC Services deals with 64 deals announced or completed in YTD 2024 compared to 57 deals in the prior year period. Notably, public strategics have reignited their interest in the HVAC Services sector. Public buyer deal volume has rebounded from three deals in YTD 2023 to 11 in YTD 2024 as portfolio and geographic diversification and recurring revenue generation remain top of mind. Private equity add-ons have continued to account for the second largest share (21.9%) of deal activity but have registered a 30% decline YOY, with 14 deals announced or completed in YTD 2024. Despite dampened add-on activity, private equity firms have increasingly deployed growth capital investments to support private strategic acquisitions in the HVAC Services sector.

Equity Capital Investments and Partnerships Offer Additional Support to Sector Growth

Growth equity investments into late-stage private companies have tracked 2019 levels as growth investments through 2023 totaled $155 billion—surpassing 2019’s full-year total of $145 billion, according to Capstone Partners’ Equity Capital Markets June 2024 Update. Early projections estimate that 2024 growth capital is set to reach $177 billion as investments into these companies totaled $44 billion in Q1 2024. Higher financing costs, reduced lending, and valuation disconnects have persisted, resulting in acquirors targeting alternative avenues for growth. These trends have acted as tailwinds for deal activity in the HVAC Services sector as growth capital investments and partnerships have managed to aid companies in accelerating their business plans and acquisition strategies.

Notably, middle market private equity firm Tenex Capital Management announced an investment in R.F. Fager, a distributor of roofing, plumbing, and HVAC supplies (April, undisclosed). Additionally, Trinity Hunt Partners announced that its commercial HVAC platform, NexCore, partnered with commercial HVAC systems services provider Sylvester & Cockrum (S&C) in May (undisclosed). The partnership with S&C is expected to drive NexCore’s momentum in the Commercial HVAC Services space, building off the platform’s initial investment in Alliance Group (April 2023, undisclosed). “It has been gratifying to experience the traction NexCore has gained thus far, as we have thoughtfully positioned ourselves in the industry as a strategic partner who provides opportunities for sustained growth with a do no harm approach,” said NexCore CEO, Steve Knowles, in a press release. 2 The shift among sector participants to act as strategic partners has allowed for continuous deal activity in the space despite persistent macroeconomic headwinds.

Crete United’s Acquisition Activity Highlights Extensive Consolidation in the Services Market

Leading provider of HVAC, electrical, plumbing and building automation services, Crete United, has undergone a significant expansion since Ridgemont Equity Partners assumed a controlling interest in the company (June 2022, undisclosed). Crete has deployed a focused M&A strategy, supported by an organic growth engine, which has spurred the acquisition of eight companies in 2023 and two more in YTD 2024. These deals bring Crete’s total add-on acquisition count to more than 40 businesses with annual revenues exceeding $680 million and on pace to top $1 billion annually over the next few years, according to a press release. 3 Crete generated ~40% revenue growth in 2023 and rebranded from Crete Mechanical Group to Crete United in early 2024 to expand into the Building Services market—a move which supports Crete’s upstream diversification strategy. Notably, the acquisition of Pro Star Energy Solutions (March 2024, undisclosed) signaled Crete’s diversification into the Data Center end market with Pro Star serving five of the largest 15 U.S. data centers, according to a deal press release. 4 Its building automation solutions have helped propel Crete’s new strategic vision. Pennsylvania-based DRS is an industrial and commercial refrigeration contracting company serving various sectors, including Cold Storage Warehouses, Dairy Processing, and Food Preparation. Through the transaction, Refrigeration Design & Service gains a skilled labor force specializing in refrigeration maintenance and service, while expanding its geographic reach and reinforcing its Mid-Atlantic market leading position. The acquisition was supported by Refrigeration Design & Service’s corporate parent, The Kelvin Group, an industrial refrigeration services business backed by private equity firm Southfield Capital.
  • Point 41 Capital Partners Acquires Interstate AC Service, Kimbro Mechanical, and Open Source Controls (January, Undisclosed) – In January, middle market private equity firm Point 41 Capital Partners acquired the combined operations of Interstate AC Service, Kimbro Mechanical, and Open Source Controls. Terms of the transaction were undisclosed. The acquisition strengthens Point 41’s portfolio of HVAC, plumbing, and building automation solutions and diversifies its markets in the Industrial, Education, Warehouse, Government, Healthcare, and Data Center segments.

  • Saw Mill Capital-Backed Climate Pros Acquires HD Energy (January, Undisclosed) – Climate Pros, a Saw Mill Capital portfolio company, acquired HD Energy for an undisclosed sum in January. Montreal-based HD Energy provides refrigeration, HVAC asset optimization, and remote energy performance monitoring services to grocery and retail customers. HD Energy will bring complementary capabilities to Watchtower, Climate Pros’ technology platform. Watchtower uses advanced analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) to provide customers with predictive maintenance solutions, improving asset up-time, performance, and sustainability. The addition of HD Energy to this platform will create a comprehensive HVAC and refrigeration optimization platform.
