Australia currently holds the top rank in the ICC Test Championship.

One Day International (ODI) Cricket

The ODI is the next form in this cricket match essay in English. Here, the overs of the match are limited. ODIs are played between two international teams, each playing for 50 overs. One such example of an ODI match in cricket is the Cricket World Cup, which is generally held once in four years. Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most runs and centuries in the history of ODI cricket with 18,426 runs made.

Twenty 20 Cricket (T20)

It is a shortened format of a cricket match. Professionally, it was first introduced in 2003 by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board). In a match of T20 cricket, each team has single innings and the limit of overs in the match is 20. A typical match of T20 cricket has a duration of 3 hours. Australia holds the top ranking in the ICC T20 International Championship with ratings of 275.

These are the three forms in which general cricket matches are played internationally as recognized by the ICC (International Cricket Council). This essay on cricket matches covers all three main variations.

An Exciting Cricket Match Essay

Cricket is my favourite game to play with my friends. In this essay on a cricket match I enjoyed, I choose to write about a game of cricket I played at my school.

Last winter, my school organized an inter-school cricket match. 5 teams were participating. In the game, there was a lot of tension among my playmates and our aim was to win to make our teachers and parents happy. Despite a bad start, we managed to set a target of 150 against our opponent team. They had a great start but due to our teamwork and strategy, we won by 15 runs.

It was a supremely enjoyable match of cricket the moments of which will always remain etched in my memory.

Therefore, here I end an essay on a cricket match that I enjoyed the most. Overall, this cricket match essay covers all the aspects of cricket; it discusses everything from the history and origin of the game to its popularity. No doubt it is one of the most loved sports and is enjoyed by people all across the globe.

324 Words on Essay on Cricket in India

Though hockey is the national sport of India, sometimes one is forced to wonder if it is cricket which deserves this honor. For when one compares the excitement and frenzy generated by a cricket match in India to that surrounding a hockey match, the latter pales into insignificance. So it can be said that cricket is the ‘unofficial’ national sport of India. In fact, its development has been closely connected with the history of the country, ‘mirroring many of the political and cultural developments around issues such as caste, religion and nationality’.

Cricketers in India have the status of Demy gods. Politicians, big businessmen and film stars fawn over them and MNCs pursue them for endorsements and mega advertising deals. But all this fame and glory lasts only as long as they win the current match. Indian fans can be an unforgiving lot as many seasoned cricketers have discovered by now.

International cricket in India generally does not follow a set pattern. Generally, more one-day matches are played than Test matches. Cricket in India is managed by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), the richest cricket board in the world. Cricket is the most watched sport in the country and attendance often dips sharply in schools, colleges and offices every time a major international match is played.

There is a lot of politics involved in the game and this has caused many controversies regarding player selection and captaincy issues. The scandal involving Greg Chappell, the Australian coach and Saurav Ganguly is one example. Allegations of match- fixing have also sullied the image of the sport during Azharuddin’s captaincy.

Now we have film stars and business tycoons bidding for players like farmers buying prized cattle breeds! Cricket has eclipsed the importance of other sports in India. Hockey, football, tennis, etc are the stepchildren of Indian sports thanks to cricket. This neglect does not bode well for the future of Indian sports.

The Very Brief Life of a World-Class Cricket Stadium on Long Island

Built in 100 days for the Cricket World Cup, the stadium will host nine matches before it is dismantled.

A stadium with banners hanging down and a mini-golf course in front.

By David Waldstein

John Norton, a retired police officer from Long Island, sat in a folding chair and watched his grandson’s Little League game in East Meadow on Wednesday. The quiet spot is less than a mile from where one of the biggest sporting events in the world would take place in a few days, but Mr. Norton, like many people in the area, was only vaguely aware of the details.

“I saw the stadium from the street,” Mr. Norton said. “I don’t know the first thing about cricket, but I guess it’s going to be pretty crazy over there.”

The stadium he saw — the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium — seemed to have popped up almost overnight. Now it sits on one edge of the 930-acre Eisenhower Park, a massive — if temporary — cricket stadium that was built in sections, like a giant erector set, over the last 100 days. It will host eight matches of the Men’s T20 World Cup, an international cricket tournament expected to draw the attention of hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide, even if most people in New York seem barely aware of its existence.

Matches will also be held in six Caribbean nations along with Dallas and Lauderhill, Fla. The event officially opens on Saturday in Dallas, where the United States plays Canada. The stadium in East Meadow, which can hold 34,000 spectators, will be inaugurated with an exhibition match on Saturday between India and Bangladesh.

The Indian team arrived in New York this week and practiced at a nearby facility in Hicksville. This was all reported with great fanfare in India, a country dotted with cricket grounds of all sizes.

If You Build It (a Cricket Stadium on Long Island), Will They Come?

By Simon Webster

Image may contain Book Comics Publication Adult Person Stencil Face Head Art and Drawing

Late last year, it was announced that New York would host a handful of cricket’s T20 World Cup games, in June. One thing was missing: a venue. Since then, a nearly thirty-four-thousand-seat temporary stadium has been under construction on a weedy field in Eisenhower Park, in Nassau County—like “Field of Dreams,” with patches of clover instead of cornstalks. On a recent morning, Asim Khizar Gujjar, the manager of the Long Island United Cricket Club, a group of local amateurs who play at the park, checked it out. “It’s pretty hard to explain to Americans what cricket is,” Khizar, who wore a black Adidas jacket, jeans, and Nikes, said. “Start from baseball. There’s a pitcher and there’s a batter. He’s pitching it and he’s smacking it. Then, once you get close to it, you’ll be, like, You know what, this is a lot more complicated.”

Khizar works as a chauffeur, and he had driven his black Tesla to the park. He has lived on Long Island—now in Valley Stream—since 2015, having emigrated from Pakistan at the age of eighteen. “The day I migrated, I thought, Cricket is gone,” he said. After two months, he saw some kids playing tape ball—a crude version of the sport—in a park in Bay Shore. They told him about Long Island United, which has four teams and doubles as a social club. Khizar is a batter for his team, with a talent for hitting sixes, cricket’s equivalent of home runs. “Last year, we won a couple of tournaments!” he said. (The team donated the prize money to flood-relief efforts in Pakistan.)

At Eisenhower Park, he tallied the hazards. The ground was lumpy and undulating. Trees encroached on the usual playing area, as on a golf course. “See the potholes?” he asked. Nearby, the construction team was at work finishing the stands. A group of officials had gathered for a tour of the work in progress. Don Lockerbie, a venue director for the United States’ organizing group, greeted Khizar and led everyone into a makeshift war room. Explaining why New York was chosen for the venue, he said, “The first-ever international sporting event—in 1844—was a cricket match in Manhattan!” (Even earlier, in 1778, George Washington, between skirmishes with the British, was described as playing “at Wicket.”)

A slide show began. Jeff Keas, an architect with the firm Populous, clicked through renderings of the stadium. It loosely resembled a bowl, with large stands of seats on two sides, and suites and cabanas on the others. “This is all a kit of parts, like a Meccano set,” Keas said. He paused on a slide showing the suites: “To add a little slice of Americana, we have cabanas, loge boxes, party decks, bunker suites.”

“There might be a d.j.,” Lockerbie added.

They were still deciding on food options. “It can’t be hamburgers and hot dogs,” Keas said. (There will be vegetable samosas, halal lamb burgers, hot and cold chai, and shikanji, a spiced lemonade.)

Hard hats were produced and yellow vests donned. Will Madison, whose company, Arena Americas, is supplying the stadium parts, led the group up narrow stairways that floated dozens of feet off the ground, and into the partially built stands. “Everything’s designed so a low-grade hurricane can blow through and we’re still O.K.,” he said. Was he worried about the glass windows in the suites? “They assured me they cannot hit a six up here,” Madison said. Khizar looked skeptical.

The ground inside the stadium was just dirt, soon to be sodded over with Kentucky bluegrass from a farm in New Jersey. The pitches—twenty-two-yard strips of compressed grass, dirt, and clay, on which play occurs—were also being prepared off-site, in Florida.

Khizar had been distressed when he failed to snag a general-admission ticket to the most anticipated match, Pakistan vs. India, which sold out online in two minutes. (Scalpers are selling seats for fifteen hundred dollars.) Thankfully, a teammate had an extra.

After the tournament is over, the stadium will be disassembled and carted away, and the grass pitches will be replaced by artificial turf. “And then it’s people’s memories,” Keas said.

On his way home, Khizar stopped in Idlewild Park, a preserve consisting mostly of saltwater marsh, next to J.F.K. airport. “This is the best cricket ground we have,” he said. “If I didn’t know how to play cricket, I would have never settled in New York.” He added, “The last time that I cried was when Pakistan lost to India in 2022.” The Idlewild playing field was within a cozy ring of trees. In the middle, a local school team practiced. “These kids are Punjabi, Gujarati, Pathan,” Khizar said. “This is cricket, man.” ♦

The Western personalized approach of building rapport with Modi to secure India’s strategic cooperation will have to change.

What Does a Chastized Modi Mean for the World?

When you hold the world’s largest electoral exercise, the outcomes can be perplexing and paradoxical. That’s what happened this week in India’s colossal parliamentary elections.

After weeks of voting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the largest party in Parliament. Modi is now set to be sworn in for a historic third term this weekend . Yet, the victory was bittersweet: The BJP lost over 60 seats from its haul in the previous elections in 2019. It no longer enjoys a majority in parliament, which means that Modi will have to rely on the support of coalition allies to rule.

Amid the numbers, there were signs of chastisement of Modi personally and a repudiation of his political use of Hindu nationalism. Modi was reelected from his constituency in the holy town of Varanasi. But his victory margin was among the lowest ever in percentage terms for a sitting Indian prime minister. By contrast, Modi’s arch-rival, Rahul Gandhi of the opposition Congress party, won two separate seats — each with over twice the victory margin that Modi managed in Varanasi.

Meanwhile, the BJP lost in the constituency that houses the Ram temple . It also lost in the constituency in Rajasthan where Modi had infamously called Muslims “infiltrators” this April.

What might this turn of events mean for the world and for Modi’s approach to foreign policy in his third term?

Over the last few years, Modi had redefined India’s practice of foreign policy, primarily by reorienting it toward the service of Hindu nationalist goals. His election campaign had also heavily leveraged foreign policy , seeking to portray Modi as a global statesman with universal appeal. One of the BJP’s campaign videos even went so far as to claim that Modi had “stopped” the war in Ukraine.

But in the end, this popularization of foreign policy failed to reap any visible dividends. In large parts of the hinterland, concerns over unemployment and lack of socioeconomic mobility trumped Modi’s promise to deliver India to civilizational glory on the world stage. For the immediate term, therefore, domestic concerns might dominate Modi’s plate, possibly resulting in a more inward-looking government in New Delhi for at least the next few months.

Whatever course Modi chooses to take, the world will certainly face a very different government in New Delhi to the one it has dealt with over the past decade. This new era is uncharted territory for Modi and he enters it grossly unprepared. Since 2001, Modi has served as a chief minister for 13 years and prime minister for the last ten. Yet, in all that time, he has never had to rely on coalition partners to maintain a majority in the legislature.

That also means that India’s foreign partners will have to readapt to the reality of coalition politics. Over the last few years, much of the West chose to build a personal rapport with Modi even as he cracked down on civil liberties and political opposition in India. The rationale — albeit largely unrewarded — was that if Modi is appeased and exalted with praise, the West may secure strategic cooperation and concessions from him.

That personalized approach will no longer fit the bill. With the return of parliamentary politics and fickle-minded coalition partners propping up the new government, India’s foreign policy ecosystem has now widened beyond Modi’s personal vision. The world will therefore have to engage with a far wider cross-section of India’s political spectrum in shaping the future course of India’s foreign policy.

Some observers in the West fear this new era, particularly in the economic space. Investors worry that with Modi’s decision-making authority now constrained, reforms and initiatives may move less quickly through India’s infamous bureaucratic quagmire.

But that may yet be for the best. Contrary to popular perceptions, India’s economy has historically performed better under coalition governments. Some of its most sweeping reforms in the 1990s, for instance, had been made possible through coalition politics. The reason for this counterintuitive trend may be that in a country as vast and diverse as India, coalition politics can often help build broad-based support for politically difficult reforms by producing more public debate and involving more stakeholders.

Modi’s own patchy record as an economic reformer bears witness to this. On multiple occasions, Modi had to roll back laws — reforming land acquisition and the agricultural sector — because a lack of discussion in Parliament had inevitably resulted in widespread street protests.

There could also be other potential good news for the West: the resurgence of parliamentary democracy may temper India’s more recently belligerent practice of diplomacy.

Over Modi’s previous term, India had effectively taken a holiday from the liberal international order. As Modi centralized authority in New Delhi and sought global validation for Hindu nationalism, India moved sharply away from Western norms on democracy, human rights and international law. Modi’s muscular nationalism resulted in a more risk-acceptant foreign policy , including attempts to target dissidents abroad and monitor the diaspora. The weakening of democratic institutions in India also put New Delhi on a warpath against multilateral institutions , which Modi perceived to be dominated by Western norms. All of this narrowed common ground between India and the West, even as New Delhi increasingly began to speak of the world in terms used by Beijing and Moscow.

It’s yet unclear how Modi’s new government would approach these issues. But it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that many of these contentious policies would be more difficult to pursue, now that Modi must depend on the support of allies who do not subscribe to his Hindu nationalist worldview.

India’s voters may have returned Modi to power once more. But one might still expect New Delhi to speak and behave somewhat differently on the world stage.
