A kitchen garden is a garden where various kinds of seasonal vegetables are grown for the consumption of a family. Since I know that vegetables are essential to keep good health, I have made a kitchen garden behind our house. I usually work there in the morning and in the afternoon. I weed out the garden, water the plants, spread fertilizer etc. I spend busy time in the afternoon. I cultivate all kinds of seasonal vegetables like cabbage , cauliflower egg-plant , tomato , gourd, pumpkin, pepper etc. my kitchen garden is not only a source of vegetables to my family but also a source of income. We don’t need to buy any vegetable from the market. It supplies fresh vegetables to my family. Thus it helps my family.

A kitchen garden is a small, functional garden that is used exclusively to grow vegetables and herbs for cooking and use within the kitchen.

"Kitchen gardens are normally located conveniently close to the kitchen of the home or commercial premises like a restaurant," says Annette Hird, a horticulturist and expert gardener at Easy Urban Gardens . "Most of the original kitchen gardens grew herbs because these could be harvested continuously just by snipping off a few sprigs here and there."

How to Plan and Start a Kitchen Garden

Kitchen gardens come in all shapes and sizes, and your approach to planning your kitchen garden only needs to be as involved as you have time for.

The main considerations will be space, your USDA hardiness zone , sunlight and soil, and the type of plants you want to grow. Early spring is typically an ideal time to start your garden, but that can change depending on the type of plants you choose.

"To start a kitchen garden, all that's needed is a sunny spot that provides easy access from the kitchen," Hird says.

When planning, think about its proximity to your kitchen, whether the spot gets the right sun for the plants you plan on growing, and how you'll actually position the plants within the garden. Companion plants are a critical element of a successful kitchen garden.

Soil and Climate Considerations for a Kitchen Garden

Your climate and hardiness zone will determine what you can grow during different times of year, which herbs will be winter hardy, and how you'll plan your kitchen harvest. You don't have to limit your kitchen garden to spring and summer if you choose vegetables and herbs that will continue to produce throughout the winter .

Additionally, if you plan on using in-ground beds, it's helpful to test the soil to determine where it falls in terms of neutral, acidic, or alkaline, and how the nutrients are within the soil. You can always add amendments , but you need to know the baseline first. Generally, a layer of compost will add much-needed nutrients into the soil.

Choosing Raised Beds vs. Containers for Your Kitchen Garden

Kitchen gardens can be grown in raised beds , in-ground beds, or containers . In-ground beds work best when your soil is high quality or can be easily amended. You'll have to water an in-ground bed less than a raised bed or a container, but that option isn't always available depending on your soil.

With both raised beds and containers, you'll have control over the soil since you have to fill both. When it comes to decided between a raised bed or a container, think about size and effort.

"The size that you choose will determine how many different varieties you can grow," Hird says. "So, a raised bed could accommodate quite a number of different plants but with something like a 12-inch diameter pot, you're limited to just a handful of different varieties."

With raised beds or large containers, you'll need to keep in mind watering needs.

"This is especially important during summer when daily watering will be needed," Hird says. "In winter, if you live in a mild climate, watering can be reduced to whenever the top couple of inches of soil feel dry."

One final consideration is mobility. If you have mobility issues or trouble bending down, then the highest bed or container possible will make kitchen gardening easier.

What to Grow in a Kitchen Garden

"Start with a range of different herbs that you use often in your cooking," Hird says.

Your kitchen garden is your kitchen garden, so grow what you like. What do you gravitate towards at the farmer's market? What herb do you always find yourself reaching for while cooking? Do you crave a tomato sandwich nearly every day during the summer? You should grow the herbs and vegetables that you use and enjoy.

"Things like parsley, marjoram, thyme, oregano, basil, chives and cilantro will grow well in a kitchen garden," Hird says. "You could also include greens such as loose-leaf lettuce, spinach, kale, and swiss chard. If you want to get a bit more adventurous during the warmer months, you could also add a tomato plant, cucumbers and beans."

Advantages of Growing a Kitchen Garden

The most obvious advantage to growing a kitchen garden is access to fresh produce right out your back door. Produce can be expensive and growing your own allows you to prepare and cook nutritious meals without a trip to the grocery store.

The other advantage is that a kitchen garden is typically smaller than a vegetable garden, making it easier to take care of and maintain. You can plant just a few vegetables or a handful of herbs — ones you know you'll use — and the maintenance is minimal.

How to Care for a Kitchen Garden

Depending on the size, a kitchen garden is typically lower maintenance than a vegetable garden. You may need to stake tomatoes, beans, and other plants that can become heavy as they grow but, typically, plants and herbs that are regularly harvested shouldn't need pruning. Plants that grow in a vine-like pattern, like cucumbers, might need to be controlled if they're impacting the plants around them.

Your watering schedule will depend on the plants that you choose. For example, mint will need to be watered regularly, while rosemary thrives in a drier environment. And don't forget about fertilizer.

"You'll need to feed your kitchen garden plants on a regular basis," Herd says. "You could either use slow-release pellets or a liquid fertilizer that you mix with water. Pellets usually only need to be replenished every four to six months, while liquid feed should be applied once every two weeks during the warmer months and around once a month during winter."

Preparing Your Kitchen Garden for Winter

Your kitchen garden can be used year round if you plant herbs and vegetables that can stand up to colder temperatures, however Hird recommends covering the kitchen garden to protect it from snow and frost.

"You could either use a cold frame or a protective type of greenhouse structure," Hird says. "Or, you could repot the plants into individual pots and then bring them indoors over winter."

Hird suggests leaving hardy vegetables like kale outside during a frost, as the leaves can actually become sweeter.

How to Protect Your Kitchen Garden From Pests

Like all edible gardens, the biggest threat to your kitchen garden is the pests that also find your plants delicious. To protect your kitchen garden from pests, you can take several steps that will deter rabbits, bugs, and other ravenous critters.

Install a fence with mesh wire and a barrier along the bottom to keep rabbits out. Make sure it's at least six feet high to stop deer too.
Plant companion plants that will help distract or repel bugs. These can be herbs and vegetables, or you can plant flowers like marigolds that attract aphids and other bugs away from your garden.
Spray neem oil or another organic insecticide to deter bugs.

Everyone needs a place to relax. Some prefer libraries, while others prefer teahouses and cafés. My ultimate choice to find peace is my garden. There is something about the green grass, colourful flowers, chirping birds, and woody trees that instantly calms me down in any tense situation. No other place, yoga session, or therapy has had that effect on me. Here are a few sample essays on “My Garden”.

100 Words Essay On My Garden

“Green Heaven” is the name of my garden. It is my favourite place in the house. I built this garden plant by plant with the help of my grandmother. We cleared the backyard of our house and with some old gardening tools, we planted our first sapling in a corner. It bloomed in a few weeks. I never looked back after that.

Today, my garden has over 20 flowers including my favourite - white lilies, and five different fruit trees. I also love roses grown in my garden. During spring, my garden looks like heaven with lots of butterflies, birds and small insects making their home in it.

200 Words Essay On My Garden

My day starts with a cup of tea, a newspaper, and the fruity and flowery smell in the air as I sit in the midst of my garden. I love the essence and vibe of my garden. It fills me with calmness and energy every morning. After doing a walk, I also practise yoga with my grandfather in my garden. Whenever I feel restless and disturbed, I seek refuge in my garden only. It gives me so much peace.

Teamwork Of My Elders

My garden is an outcome of a joint project undertaken by my father and grandfather. They both are very fond of planting trees. His knowledge helped us to grow our small rough patch of land into this wonderful garden which now has over 50 different plants. We have planted seven different varieties of roses. My favourite place in the garden is the branches of the huge Mango tree in the corner. It was planted by my grandfather 10 years ago. I love to spend my time sitting on that branch.

When we moved from the high-rise 3 BHK flat in Mumbai to the suburbs, I was disappointed and sad. The only good thing about our new house was that it was relatively bigger than our flat. The house also had a backyard which was used as a secondary car garage by the previous owners.

How It Was Set Up

Since we didn’t have a second car, my father cleared out the backyard, and we were left with a large patch of empty land. It was my grandmother’s idea to convert the land into a small, beautiful and cosy garden. My grandmother always loved gardening. Back in the flat, she used to tie up small flower pots in the railings. Now was the perfect time to make her part-time gardening hobby into a full-blown garden. My father and my uncle tiled up the entire land and planted grass. It took a few weeks, but soon the whole land was greener than grasshoppers. After that, they used a lawn mower and trimmed down the grass. That is how my garden was born.

Plants It Houses

After that, with the passing of time and the dedication and passion of gardening in my mother, grandmother and eventually I, we completely transformed that place into a beautiful, lush green garden.

Vegetables | My garden has many vegetables grown by my mother. We have tomatoes, brinjals, radishes, and chillies. We often use them in our daily meals, and they turn out very delicious.

Flowering Plants | Not only that, but we also have many plants in my garden. The flowering plants are mostly planted by me. My father gifts me a flower sapling every year on my birthday. By now I have rose, lily, marigold and hibiscus plants. They look very pretty in the months of spring. The red rose is my favourite as it attracts many butterflies.

Medicinal Plants | My grandmother has planted many herbal and medicinal plants. She has planted a Tulsi tree in the centre of the garden, and she worships it daily. I love munching on the tulsi plant leaves.

Fountain | This year, on my birthday, I requested my father to have a fountain. A few weeks ago, we got the water fountain installed in the garden. It enhanced my garden’s beauty ten-fold.

My Love For My Garden

We don’t have a gardener to look after our garden. I love to take care of my garden on my own. I borrow the gardening tools from my grandmother and trim excess leaves, cut the stems and even water the plants on a daily basis. It feels very calming to take care of my own garden. Whenever my friends come, they immediately rush to the garden. We play near the fountain, do our homework, and even plan picnics on the weekend in my garden only.

My garden has made me forget how upset I was about moving to the suburbs. Now that I think back, it was one of the best decisions of my life. I always find comfort and safety in my garden. It feels like all these trees and plants are my friends and I love caring for them. In spring, many birds and insects make my garden their own home. I also love feeding the bird in my garden. Now I think gardening is one of the best hobbies in the world, and I love my garden so much.

Tom Coward is the head gardener at Gravetye Manor , a British hotel on the former grounds of 19th-century wild garden proponent William Robinson. The property comprises more than 1000 acres of lush gardens in the Sussex countryside.

1. Plan the Color Scheme

You’re going for the illusion of a natural color scheme, Coward says. “Nature puts plants together in ways we can only dream of mimicking, so you can be quite free with the color theory you use.” Focus on how colors go together and how they contrast, he says, and then pick your color combination. Then choose plants that fall in your chosen color scheme.

At Gravetye, Coward will put plants with blue and orange flowers together because they’re opposites and throw in some pink flowers for “a little bit of a clash,” he says. “It’s a little bit controversial, but it’s fun.” He’s used triadic schemes of orange, purple and green, and analogous color schemes of yellow, orange, and pink.

“Be adventurous,” he says. You can get away with a lot of color schemes, even bold ones, because the overall background color of green will tie everything together, Coward says.

Choose plants with different leaf textures. “Texture is more important than the color because a variety of textures brings a sense of movement to a border,” Coward says. “Movement is very important to the look of a mixed border.”

Texture in a plant is determined by its leaf size. Plants with large leaves, like lamb’s ear , lady’s mantle , or heuchera add coarse texture, while plants with wispy, ferny, or narrow leaves like daylilies, yarrow, and ornamental grasses add fine texture. Plants with middle-sized leaves like irises, euphorbia, and azaleas add medium texture.

Mixing leaf textures gives your border more visual punch. A good mix of textures will make your garden look good whether it’s blooming or not, Coward says. Texture isn’t an easy design concept to grasp or see. Coward suggests taking a photo of your border in black and white so you can see the leaf textures better. If you don’t see enough texture in that black-and-white photo, mix in some plants with more leaf sizes. “Don’t be afraid to move plants around each season to tweak your design,” he says.

One of the easiest ways to get that desirable wild look in your garden is to include plants that will drop seeds and come back on their own. They can be annuals or perennials . Think zinnias, calendula, cosmos, coneflower, columbine, poppies, lupine, or asters. “You can get a self-sustaining population of plants that brings a naturalistic element to a formal planting,” Coward says. “That wild aspect is very, very beautiful and quite important because it brings irregularity to the garden.” It also means a little less work for you when the flowers plant themselves.

4. Include Shrubs and Trees

Create a backdrop for the colors and textures in the mixed border with shrubs, trees, and large clumps of ornamental grasses . “Woody material is so important,” Coward says. “It gives you structure all through the year.” Even when nothing else is blooming, the shrubs and trees serve as the architecture of the garden.

Coward calls these shrubs, grasses, and trees “anchor plants.” At Gravetye, he uses azaleas, roses, and heathers as anchor plants . “Without those plants, the borders would be really flat,” he says. “You can say that if you don't have shrubs, you don't have a garden.”

5. Set Out Tender Perennials

Keep your mixed flower beds and borders full of flowers by putting full-grown tender perennials into the garden in late spring, once spring blooms have faded. This adds a lush look to your mixed borders, Coward says. At Gravetye, Coward and his staff set out cannas and salvias in late spring to fill in the gaps in the mixed borders, then take cuttings or divisions in mid to late summer to overwinter in the greenhouse to transplant next year.

Don’t be afraid to try new plants and layouts as you experiment with these English cottage garden ideas. “Embrace plants and enjoy them,” Coward says. “Do not be afraid to experiment and play with them.” So go ahead and try that new variety of coneflower , add the unidentified vining rose you got at the plant swap, and toss some seeds into the ground to see if they’ll grow.

“Try things and react to them,” Coward says. “If what you did or what you planted looks good, then you've learned something. Our Visit to the Nursery

On the weekend that followed, I and my sister visited the nearby nursery. There were numerous flowers out there and it was difficult to choose a few among them. It took almost 2 hours to choose the plants we wanted to get home. Among the flowering plants we choose rose, marigold, pansy and aster. Besides, we also brought home areca palm, spider plant, aloe vera, basil and asparagus. The nursery in-charge told us ways to take care of different plants so that they remain green for long.

We handpicked the plant pots. Most of them were white coloured plastic pots of the same size. We called home a gardener to place all the plants in the pots. Once this was done, we arranged the pots strategically so that the entire balcony was evenly covered with them. It looked beautiful.

We visit the nursery quite often to pick more plants to add to our collection. Seasonal flowers do not last long and we love picking different plants to fill their place.

I personally take care of each and every plant grown in my garden. Our balcony turned garden is extremely beautiful and we often receive compliments for the same from our neighbours and friends.

I always wanted to grow a garden at my place but it did not seem possible as we lived in a small flat in Delhi. There was a beautiful garden at my friend, Riya’s place and I wished we had one too every time I saw it. My prayers were soon heard and we shifted to my father’s home town, Chandigarh. The house here was big and there was enough space that could be turned into a garden.

Hiring a Professional Gardener

Luckily for me, my mother is as fond of plants and flowers as me. Thus, I did not have to convince her to grow a garden she too wanted to do it. After we got settled in the new place, we decided to shape the barren piece of land at our place into a garden. Since, the house had been vacant since years the soil in the garden was not good enough to grow grass and plants immediately.

So, my mother decided to hire a professional gardener. He worked on the soil for about a week during which he watered it regularly, used different tools to dig it and poured manure. Soon after, he planted grass and a few plants. We were delighted to see our little garden blooming.

Growing the Garden

I and my mother decided to visit the nursery to buy different plants for our garden. It was summer season and the nursery was blooming with pink and white lilies, colourful hibiscus, roses, pansies, sunflowers and bougainvillea. We loved them all and it was extremely difficult to choose among them. After mulling for over an hour, we finally choose a few saplings of hibiscus, bougainvillea, lilies and roses.

The saplings we brought were planted strategically in different parts of the garden. The bougainvillea being a climber was planted near the fence. Within a month it climbed the fence and spread over it. The beautiful bunches of pink flowers that grew on it were a visual treat. We decided to plant similar flowers together. So the roses were planted in one corner. A row of lilies was set close by and hibiscus plants were planted at the other corner of the garden. It all looked extremely beautiful. The plants soon found their roots in the garden and small buds began to spout. Each time I saw a bud, I got extremely thrilled. Our garden was soon blossoming with flowers. The sweet fragrance of the flowers filled our house.

It has been 3 years now and my garden is filled with a variety of flowers and leafy plants. We keep bringing different types of flowers from time to time. However, roses, lilies and bougainvillea can always be found in my garden. We have also added a row of basil. The aroma of basil is quite soothing. We also use it in our kitchen quite frequently.

We still have the same professional gardener who works with dedication and takes care of my garden very well.

It is quite amazing to have a garden at home. I am thankful that we shifted to a city like Chandigarh where I could have the luxury of growing a garden.

Organic Vegetables and Fruits in My Garden

Besides beautiful rows of leafy plants and multi-hued flowers, my grandmother has also planted many vegetables in our garden. Spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, green chillies, carrots and eggplants are among some of the vegetables that grow in my garden. Herbs such as coriander, mint and curry plant have also been planted. All these vegetables grow in abundance in my garden and we often cut and cook them for our meals.

Apart from these, my garden also has quite a few fruit trees. Lemon tree, mango tree, banana tree and papaya tree have always been a part of it. They bear fruits and fill the air with their refreshing smell. Many a times, I have been made to climb the mango tree to pluck the mangoes. It is super fun and I always look forward to it.

Maintaining Garden is not Easy – a tough task

Though having a garden adds to the beauty of the house, it is quite a task to maintain it. Many people love the idea of growing plants and try their hands at it but give up in some time. This is because plants require utmost care. It is essential for you to take care of them on a daily basis in order to keep them fresh and green and help them grow.

Plants do not only require water but also need different types of manures to grow. Hats off to my grandmother who is so dedicated towards taking care of our garden even at this age. She makes sure the plants are watered twice a day and all the required manures are added from time to time. She also ensures that weeds and unwanted plants that hamper the growth of the other plants are removed timely.

We have hired a professional gardener who comes to our place thrice a week and takes care of our garden. My grandmother supervises him and gets the tasks done properly.

Some of the best memories of my childhood are attached to my garden. I love it when my entire family sits together in the garden to have their evening tea. I also love the winter afternoons when we have our lunch in the garden. It is simply amazing. Having a garden at home is blissful.

By the end of the book, Kincaid has accomplished a very specific goal: She has weaved together a synthetic version of what she experienced by gardening. By repeating the same basic steps for years and years, she has cultivated a whole host of associations with her flowers and design. In the end, the garden is a metaphor for her point of view, and the flower beds are like lens that she uses to view the diversity of life itself and of the human experience.

When she wants to know why the wisterias never look good on her porch terrace, she concludes that it is the stone of the terrace. The stone has a certain energy that doesn't combine aesthetically with the wisterias. In other words, she has discovered feng shui, the unseeable element of design that describes the flow of energy in a space. By listening to her instincts, she begins to find a sense of mastery in her design. What she ends up creating, therefore, is literally a picture of her soul, because she has listened to her sense of feng shui.

In case this seems far-fetched, she literally journeys to China at the end of the novel, so it isn't far-fetched at all. She pays to take her, some friends, and her publisher, all to China where they visit botanical gardens. That's where the concept of feng shui is from, and basically, feng shui is the silent argument of the whole book. Feng shui can be simply seen as another way of saying, "Every detail matters; everything is significant."

Krasnodar Krai: inside Russia’s southern gem

Home to sochi, host of the 2014 winter olympics, this russian region has plenty to offer travellers.

Where can you go that's less than four hours from the UAE and allows you to be at the top of a snow-capped mountain in the morning and lounging on the beach by lunch?

If you’d asked me this question a month ago, my answer – possibly like many people familiar with this region – would have been Lebanon.

The country is known for its party scene, fantastic beach clubs and good ski resorts. But ask me today and you'll probably be surprised by my answer, if only because it's most likely a place you've never heard of.

I'm talking about Krasnodar Krai. This destination had quietly slipped under my radar until a few weeks ago, when flydubai launched direct flights from Dubai to Sochi, one of the major cities in the Krasnodar Krai district of southern Russia.

Sochi – that’s a spot you might have heard of. It was the host of the 2014 Winter Olympics, which perhaps explains why I arrived in the city expecting to see little more than snow-capped mountains.

Even though it was June, I wasn’t disappointed – although technically the mountains I saw were in the Krasnaya Polyana region, rather than in Sochi itself. What I also saw landing at Sochi International Airport was a set of coloured Olympic rings, waiting to welcome travellers to a city that was entirely rebuilt for the world’s most popular winter sporting event. Sochi is proud of its status as an Olympic host and even more so of the way it has eluded the oft-dreaded curse that befalls many host towns.

Beyond the games

Many nations struggle in the aftermath of the Olympics – which require massive infrastructure, housing and facility development with associated costs ($51 billion [Dh187.33bn] in Russia's case) – but a lack of visitors once the final gold medal has been handed out.

That's not been the case in Russia. Instead, only eight months after the Winter Olympics ended, Sochi hosted the first Grand Prix to take place in the country in exactly 100 years. Housed in the newly built Sochi Autodrom, the fourth-longest circuit on the Formula One calendar, it soon became a regular fixture on the international motorsport calendar. If cars are your thing, you can book a tour of the circuit (Dh40 for adults ) and you'll get to wander the pit lane, step inside the team garages, visit the control room and stand on the winner's podium. Afterwards, the Sochi AutoSport Museum lets you get up close and personal with some of the rarest cars in motorsport history.

Rebuilt to host the 2014 winter olympics, Sochi's transport options are impressive.

Adjacent to the Aut odrom is Sochi Olympic Park (free entry), home to the famous Fisht Stadium, arguably the most impressive arena in all of Russia. It's where the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games took place and was also a host site for Russia's 2018 Fifa World Cup. Right in the middle of the Olympic Park, if you look carefully enough, you'll see a small graveyard belonging to the community that lived on this land before it was selected as the site of the Olympics. Sochi's Old Believers' cemetery predates the new venues by more than 100 years, and is the only remnant of a time, not too long ago, when Sochi was nothing but farmland and villages.

If you're travelling with children, Sochi Park is a western-style theme park that's not quite on par with Disneyland but will certainly keep little ones entertained. The four-star fairy-tale castle-like Bogatyr hotel (rooms from Dh680 ) is right on site and offers unlimited access to the park's roller coasters, carousels and myriad attractions. Elsewhere, the main Olympic Village, which was once home to athletes, journalists and delegates, is now a resort town that welcomes tourists from all over the country who descend on Sochi in search of the "Russian Riviera" lifestyle.

One of the biggest draws in this southern region is the Black Sea coastline.Stretching some 150 kilometres, it offers vast stretches of beaches to explore. From the popular tourist-laden Riviera Beach, dotted with bars, restaurants, volleyball courts and ice cream stalls, to the remote pebbly coastline in Adler, sunbathing is easy – just don't expect sand. If that's a deal breaker for you, the Radisson Collection Paradise Resort and Spa (rooms from Dh869 ) has a white sandy beach created from sand imported for an international volleyball tournament. The luxury resort also has one of the area's best-ranked spas and there are six luxury villas, if you want a bit more privacy.

Now, back to those mountains: from Sochi's resort district you can take a 40-minute high-speed train journey to Krasnaya Polyana, the mountainous region above Sochi and the place where the Olympic ski ing, bobsledding and snowboarding competitions took place.

The mountains of Krasnaya Polyana attract local and foreign tourists in search of snow and Caucasus elevations. The most popular winter resort is Roza Khutor, which has 80kms of ski trails and an impressively long ski season. Prices, in comparison to many European ski resorts, are on the decidedly low end of the scale.

Much of Sochi could be mistaken for being in Switzerland or Austria, but prices are a lot more affordable.

Visit in summer and you'll see an entirely different side of this mountainous province, which is best reached via a network of ski-lifts, gondolas and cable cars. Gliding overhead, you'll get an unexpected juxtaposition of fauna – fir, oak, pine and juniper trees happily nestle beside tropical palms and flowering rhododendron. Keep an eye out for the deer, goats, boar and even the odd bear that call these forests home. And don't forget your jacket – it may be a balmy 27°C on the ground but travel a few thousand metres higher and you'll be able to scrape together a few snowballs. Then stop for lunch at Vysota 2320 on Rosa Peak, the highest point in the region, where hearty Russian and Georgian food, plus breathtaking views from a height of 2,320 metres, await. Finally, descend the mountain and take a selfie at the flag-covered Olympic Village, in front of the Olympic rings, with the mountain peaks as a stunning backdrop.

Gorky Gorod is a mountain resort where cable cars and gondolas used as ski-lifts in winter act as handy traveltors in summer.

Not too far from Roza Khutor is Gorky Gorod (disembark at Esto-Sadok train station, if you're travelling by rail). This resort town is home to the longest night-ski track in the area, and another popular choice for summer weekends. The tiny village has its own private beach on the Black Sea, dozens of open-air restaurants, cafes and shisha bars, live music and an aqua park. There's a plethora of hotels in Gorky Gorod so you won't struggle to find a place to stay that fits what you're looking for in terms of budget and activities.

If a girlie spa weekend has been on your radar then you could do a lot worse than checking in to the Rixos Krasnaya Polyana Sochi (rooms from Dh410) . Situated midway up the mountain at about 960m above sea level, it's home to one of the most beautiful spas I've ever seen, spread over two storeys and with oversized arch windows to make the most of the Caucasus mountain views.

Families, however, might be better off staying in the central square, where you don't need to rely on cable cars to get from your hotel to the town centre. The Courtyard by Marriott Sochi (rooms from Dh170 ) has a great location on the banks of the Mzymta River and is within walking distance of the resort's main strip. In summer, the traditional Christmas markets in the town centre are repurposed as market stalls where you can pick up souvenirs like classic matryoshka dolls, Olympic memorabilia or Georgian churchkhela (a traditional sweet).

The Caucasus mountains act as the ideal backdrop for adventure travellers at Skypark.

Adventure enthusiasts could stay at the Novotel Krasnaya Polyana (rooms from Dh210 ). In winter, it offers ski-in ski-out facilities and in summer is a great starting point for keen hikers. It's also close to the newly opened zip line, the highest and longest in Russia, where you can fly through the air at an altitude of more than 2,000m (tickets are Dh86). If that's piqued your adventure appetite, squeeze in a day trip to SkyPark.

About a 40-minute drive from Gorky Gorod, this adventure park (entry Dh86 for adults, Dh45 for children ) was created by AJ Hacket, the man who brought bungee jumping to the world. As well as being home to one of the world's highest bungee jumps, it's also where you can swing above a river at speeds of up to 120kms per hour, zip line through the trees above Sochi's National Park or take a walk on the world's longest suspended pedestrian bridge – the perfect way to take in the undiscovered natural beauty of Russia's deep south below you.
