More About Heriot-Watt University

Get latest scholarships.

In Edinburgh, Scotland, there is a public research institution called Heriot-Watt University. The world’s first mechanical institute, the School of Arts of Edinburgh, was founded in 1821, and in 1966 it was given university status by royal charter. In the UK, it is the eighth-oldest institution of higher learning. James Watt, a Scottish inventor, and George Heriot, a Scottish philanthropist and goldsmith, were the inspirations for the name Heriot-Watt.

One of the 23 colleges given university status in the 1960s, it is renowned for its emphasis on science and engineering and is occasionally referred to as a plate glass university in places like Keele and Newcastle.

Major infrastructure investments totaling £60 million have recently benefited the university’s campus in Edinburgh, and another £68 million in investment has been announced. These include the first FlexBIO flexible downstream bio processing centre in the UK ($2 million), Scotland’s prestigious Oriam Sports Performance Center facility ($33 million), and the UK’s first purpose-built graduate centre ($6 million).

Heriot-Watt University PhD Scholarships, UK

Additionally, the university is building a 5,000 m2 Watt Innovation Building to facilitate global research, innovation, and discovery in order to foster “idea creation” on its expanding Edinburgh campus. GRID is a brand-new, ground-breaking facility that will boost research, innovation, and discovery on a global scale.

It offers an innovative teaching and learning environment for students and faculty in the fields of mathematics, engineering, physical sciences, and computer science. It has been created to foster cooperation across academic disciplines, industrial partners, and the worldwide community.

In addition to a £2.5 million academic collaboration with the oil and gas company Total, the institution has ambitions to house a significant £65 million film studio. But in 2017, it was also revealed that Heriot-Watt will eliminate 100 jobs through voluntary layoffs due to a significant financial shortage and the effects of Brexit.

Scottish Government and Heriot-Watt launch new scholarships for women in Zambia

heriot watt phd scholarship 2023

THE  Scottish Government  and Heriot-Watt’s  Edinburgh Business School  are proud to expand their partnership by offering fully funded MBA scholarships for women in Zambia.

The Gender Equality Initiative is being announced ahead of the roundtable meeting between the Scottish Government and the Zambian Government, at Heriot-Watt Dubai Climate Hub, coinciding with COP28 in the UAE.

In collaboration with the Scottish Government’s  International Development Fund , the initiative will provide 30 fully funded distance learning opportunities on the Edinburgh Business School’s  Master of Business Administration (MBA)  programme to commence in March 2024.

This is the second time the University and Scottish Government have partnered to deliver a programme that opens doors to business education for Zambian women from all backgrounds.

Commenting on the announcement, Màiri McAllan, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Net Zero and Just Transition said: “The Scottish Government is committed to playing its part as a good global citizen and helping to tackle the global challenges of poverty, injustice and inequality.

“Initiatives like this one illustrate what that means in practice. The flexibility offered by these online scholarships allow students to combine study with work and home life in their own country, and helps tackle gender inequality by breaking down some of the barriers women have in accessing learning and qualifications.

“As a country that has long benefitted from the industrialisation that has driven the current climate crisis, it is only right that Scotland contributes its fair share to support countries that have been unequally impacted by its consequences, and ensure we can meet the aims of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals together.”

Welcoming the announcement, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University, Professor Richard A. Williams, said: “Our mission at Edinburgh Business School and Heriot-Watt University is to help aspiring business professionals across the world transform their careers.

“Our students and alumni develop professionally and personally throughout their learning experience, and we are delighted to partner, once again, with the Scottish Government and offer the scholarship to women in Zambia.

“We very much look forward to welcoming the scholars to our community of students from around the world. We also hope that the selected individuals will support other women in business, providing guidance and mentorship to females who are still underrepresented across many industries at a senior management level and in boardrooms.”

In Zambia, Mainga Kabika, Permanent Secretary, Office of the President, Gender Division, said:  “The Zambian Government is committed to enhancing opportunities for women, with over 800,000 more girls attending school since we delivered on our promise of free education in 2021.

“Zambia is on the right trajectory and we’re actively increasing the numbers of women in leadership positions.  We believe that education is the best equalizer and the strongest force for empowering women.

“This scholarship provides additional opportunities for Zambian women to access world class tertiary education, through our partnership with Scotland.

“Thirty Zambian women will now have the chance to study for a world-class MBA through Heriot Watt University thanks to today’s announcement.”

Applications are invited from women of Zambian nationality who are passionate about tackling gender inequality and who will use the knowledge and skills gained from their MBA studies to support women in their local communities. The initiative also welcomes applications from women who would not be able to fund their studies. The application deadline is 31 January 2024 and the programme starts in March 2024.

James-Watt Scholarship Program 2022 at Heriot-Watt University – Edinburgh, UK

heriot watt phd scholarship 2023

Deadline: January 31, 2022

Applications are open for the James-Watt Scholarship Program 2022 . A funded Ph.D. opportunity is available under the James-Watt scholarship program at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK, to develop data-driven and data science methods for the decarbonisation of energy and water systems.

It is well known that the Built Environment contributes around 40% of all carbon emissions globally, and that, of this, energy and water consumption make up a significant proportion. Many opportunities therefore exist to help rectify this position and to create meaningful outcomes to support decarbonisation of the construction sector.

This research focuses on the underlying physics of heat dissipation and water flow in buildings, and on the analysis of related demand patterns and associated data using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. Here, statistical and deep learning methods will be used to identify the optimum method to facilitate analysis so as to allow improved decision-making and define enhanced pathways to Net Zero energy and water usage within buildings. As well as developing and assessing appropriate techniques, the work will draw comparisons with engineering and simulation-based predictions of water and energy consumption. The focus of the research will be on consumption at the building scale, but they envisage a future interface with urban scale demand models.

Scholarship

  • Scholarships will cover tuition fees and provide an annual stipend of approximately £15,609 for the 36 month duration of the project and is available to applicants from the UK, EU and overseas.

Eligibility

  • Applicants should have a first-class honours degree in a relevant subject or a 2.1 honours degree plus Masters (or equivalent experience).
  • Applicants are expected to possess a Master’s degree in Engineering, Statistics, Data Science or related quantitative fields.
  • An understanding of how to apply deep learning techniques to engineering problems, experience of working with energy and water demand and/or a working knowledge of building performance patterns would be an advantage.
  • It is the intention that the successful candidate will also work closely with high-profile external organisations who will provide access to relevant data.
  • Coding skills in Python and R are highly desirable.

Application

  • Complete the online application form. Select PhD program Construction and include the project reference, title and supervisor names on your application. If these details are not included your application may not be considered. Note that applicants may only submit ONE proposal.
  • Provide a supporting statement outlining how you would approach the research and upload this to the research proposal section of the online application. You will be required to upload a CV, a copy of your degree certificate(s) and relevant transcript(s). You may also upload an academic reference to further support your application.
  • You must provide proof of your ability in the English language (if English is not your mother tongue or if you have not already studied for a degree that was taught in English). They require an IELTS certificate showing an overall score of at least 6.5 with no component scoring less than 6.0 or a TOEFL certificate with a minimum score of 90 points.
