The Department of Philosophy offers a program of graduate studies leading to the Master of Arts degree. The purpose of the M.A. program in philosophy is to provide students with rigorous advanced training in philosophical reasoning on philosophical topics. The Department offers two tracks for earning the M.A.: a thesis option and a non-thesis option. The thesis option often better serves students who wish to go on to pursue Ph.D. work in philosophy or other areas of advanced study.

Nota bene: Anyone applying to do graduate work in philosophy with the hope of eventually teaching philosophy needs to be aware that there are currently many more candidates for positions in teaching philosophy than there are positions available.

At the beginning of every fall semester, all new graduate students are expected to attend an orientation designed to familiarize students with the program and to help them to get to know the faculty and other students in the program.

All courses taken to satisfy the master’s degree requirements must be taken for a letter grade when this option is available. Graduate students must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average in graduate courses taken in the degree program. To be advanced to candidacy for 796 (non-thesis) option, students must have a 3.0 or higher gpa; to be advanced to candidacy for 799 (thesis) option, students must have a 3.5 or higher gpa. Grades of C or better for graduate courses are accepted for graduate credit. A grade point average below 3.0 at any time during a graduate student’s studies is considered unsatisfactory and will result in the student’s being placed on academic probation for the following semester. Students who are still achieving a grade point average below 3.0 at the end of the probationary period are subject to immediate dismissal from the program.

To be eligible to enroll in PHIL 796    or  PHIL 799A   , a student must be advanced to candidacy. The non-thesis option (796) entails working with a mentor during the semester to prepare for a comprehensive exam overseen by an officially appointed committee. For the thesis option (799), the student will arrange for a committee of no less than three tenured/tenure track SDSU faculty members (two of these necessarily must be from the Philosophy Department; one of the three must be from outside the Philosophy Department). One faculty member from the Philosophy Department will serve as the chair/director of the thesis.

In addition to meeting the requirements for classified graduate standing and the basic requirements for the master’s degree as described in Requirements for Master’s Degrees, the student must complete a program of 30 units of graduate coursework (500-799) selected with the approval of the graduate adviser. Students must complete a minimum of 24 units from courses in philosophy. The 24 units shall include PHIL 521    and PHIL 796    (non-thesis) or  PHIL 799A    (thesis), and a minimum of 12 units of 600-level courses in philosophy.

VSU graduates students in new engineering program

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - Although VSU is cutting academic programs due to low enrollment, in 2020 the university developed the Engineering Technology program to address the business and industry needs across South Georgia.

Currently the program has over 40 students completing coursework as the dean of science and math says the program was intentionally designed to form a pipeline to PROMISING careers.

Dr. Pierre - Richard Cornely Dean of College Science and Mathematics said, “What we are trying to do by speaking with our partners is to understand the kinds of skills they need to make sure the way we put content together meets the skills so students can be ready right after they graduate.”

Christian Strickland, will walk across the stage along with three other students getting this new degree. He plans to continue a career Lee Container Corporation and pursue a graduate degree.

Strickland said, “I am so excited to graduate, it has been a journey to complete but I’m so excited…When I graduate, I will join the process where our main goal is to ensure we make a quality product for our customers.”

Increasingly, students are rethinking the value of college, as many question the return on investment but VSU believes this is one of the ways it can improve enrollment numbers.

Cornely said, “When a student comes out they can see how what they have learned aligns perfectly with what they will do with our partners”

As the demand grows for engineering jobs in South Georgia, the college of science and math is working to improve degree coursework to meet industry needs.

Out of State Student Clinical Requirements

The University of Texas at Tyler is approved by the Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission to conduct practice experiences in the state of Washington for the MSN Administration, Post-Master’s Administration Certificate and MSN/MBA coordinated degree programs.

Application Information

Qualifications.

Eligible applicants are those who:

• Hold a degree of Master of Science in Nursing (or higher) from a nationally accredited nursing program and regionally accredited institution.
• A minimum overall nursing GPA of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• Hold an active, unrestricted RN license in the state where the student plans to complete clinical hours.
• Transfer students must provide a letter of good standing from the Nursing program in which currently enrolled or left incomplete.

In addition, applicants:

• Advanced physiology/pathophysiology, including general principles that apply across the lifespan; lifespan is defined as prenatal through old age and death.
• Advanced health assessment, which includes assessment of all human systems, advanced assessment techniques, concepts and approaches.
• Advanced pharmacology, which includes pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapeutics of all broad categories of agents.

• for the NEL Certificate Program : must have two years of practice experience at the RN level or higher.

To be considered, applicants will be required to meet all WVU admission requirements in addition to program-specific admission criteria.

Students must satisfactorily complete background checks and drug screens upon admission.

New program applicants with a positive drug screen will be ineligible for admission to the program and will forfeit their admission “seat.” Please see the WVU SON Drug and Alcohol Screening Policy and the Health Information and Credential Documentation Policy.

Note :  Any student who has been dismissed from the West Virginia University School of Nursing or any other nursing program may be considered for readmission if the dismissal was academic and was followed by successful completion of an additional degree. Any student who has withdrawn from the WVU School of Nursing program may be considered for readmission. Students may apply for readmission in accordance with the following guidelines and criteria but must follow the standard admission procedures. Students must meet all original admission requirements.

Depending on prerequisites completed, entry term into the program will vary from student to student. Students will be reviewed for admission on a rolling basis until July 1. Applicants will be notified of admissions decisions as they are reviewed.

• It is preferred that official transcripts be sent via an online, secure service such as  eScrip-Safe ,  National Student Clearinghouse , or  Parchment to  [email protected] .
• Alternatively, sealed, untampered, physical official transcripts can be sent directly to: WVU Graduate Admissions, P.O. Box 6510, Morgantown, WV 26506-6510. 
• Current or former WVU students do not need to send transcripts from the Morgantown, Beckley, or Keyser campuses.
• Applicants who completed prior education outside of the U.S. must have their transcripts evaluated by  World Education Services (WES) .  Please request a “course-by-course” International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP).

Note: Certificate seeking students, with approval from the certificate program, may transfer up to 6 of the required credits for a graduate certificate from a different institution or applied from another previous or concurrent WVU degree or certificate. Individual course credits may be applied to no more than two degrees, majors, or certificates. Courses applied to a certificate must have been completed no more than seven years prior to certificate conferral.

Candidates for admission are evaluated on the entire admission packet. The WVU School of Nursing accepts new Post-MSN Certificate students on a rolling admission basis and will review all qualified applications based on admission criteria. Acceptance is dependent upon space available in the program with the most qualified applicants being accepted at the time of review. Decisions will be emailed to students. Accepted students will receive information regarding orientation and course registration.

Enrollment in nursing courses is based upon readiness, availability of space and other essential resources.

Clinical rotations with approved preceptors in the final year of your program must be arranged with course faculty. Due to potential preceptor limitations, students may have to travel out of their local areas to their clinical sites and are required to provide their own reliable transportation. 

Gap Analyses

Some students applying to certificate programs may have accrued direct patient care hours prior to admission. Upon request, the student’s program of study will be personalized via gap analyses to determine the number of clinical practicum hours required of each student. Any hours accrued prior to admission must have been academically supervised and completed in a setting and population appropriate to the certificate program in which the student is enrolled. Students must obtain a completed Verification of Qualifying MSN Clinical Hours and Gap Analysis form from the director of their previous program within the first semester of enrollment.

If an application for admission into a graduate program is denied, the applicant may request the reasons for refusal of admission by writing to the specific graduate program coordinator (see  Academics  page). Note that meeting the minimum requirements for admission into a graduate program does not ensure admission. An applicant may appeal to the graduate program coordinator for reconsideration if the applicant can document either factual errors in processing the application or that the decision was arbitrary, capricious, or discriminatory in nature. Appeals must be submitted within 30 calendar days of the date of the admission denial. If the matter is not resolved satisfactorily within 30 calendar days of the receipt of the appeal by the graduate program coordinator, the applicant may appeal to the dean of the college or school. The decision of the dean, as the provost’s designee, shall be rendered within 20 calendar days of the receipt of the appeal and is final. Please see Graduate Admission Denial .

UD’s non-thesis M.S. in Animal Science prepares Kayla Pettiford for veterinary school

Growing up with guinea pigs, hamsters, parakeets, turtles, and fish, University of Delaware alumna Kayla Pettiford planned a career in veterinary medicine from a young age. 

"It's always been what I wanted to do,” said Pettiford, an alumna of UD’s non-thesis master’s in Animal Science . “And I can't see myself doing anything else." 

Veterinary school acceptance is notoriously competitive, and the rigorous training can make for a stressful experience. 

“I know many students feel overwhelmed and stressed in veterinary school, and I didn't want to feel that way,” said Pettiford. “Everybody's journey to vet school can look a little different. I knew I needed more technical understanding and background.” 

Pettiford graduated with an undergraduate degree in pre-veterinary science from Delaware State University in 2021. Pettiford took her time researching master’s programs. UD's concentration in Veterinary Biosciences, Biotechnology, and One Health (VBBOH) stood out.

“I wanted to put myself at a university where I would gain the most experience,” explained Pettiford.

At UD, Pettiford worked closely with Behnam Abasht , professor of animal genetics, on his research into wooden breast, a muscle disorder in commercial broiler chickens.

“We hatched the eggs, cared for the chicks, performed necropsies, looked through the microscope,” Pettiford remarked. “Seeing the research from beginning to end was eye-opening. And Prof. Abasht walked me through the process.”

Pettiford found the study of histopathology, the microscopic examination of tissue and cells to diagnose disease, exciting.

“Histopathology wasn't even on my radar before the non-thesis master’s program,” she emphasized. “Now, it will become my focus; my lab and research experience at UD gave me that direction.”

After finishing her UD graduate program, Pettiford is ready for veterinary school. She is thankful to Prof. Tanya Gressley, associate dean of graduate programs, who answered Pettiford's many questions from the application process through graduation.

“She helped prepare me,” acknowledged Pettiford. “I feel confident that when I go to vet school, I will have a solid background to help me. That is the most important thing: having a solid foundation.”

Pettiford believes good communication skills are essential to succeed as a veterinarian. Her role as a teaching assistant for Prof. Gressley’s Animal Handling (ANFS 112 ) course helped her grow these skills. Communication is vital in her current role as a veterinary technician at Animal Haven Veterinary Center in Bear, Delaware. 

“I just love meeting new pet parents,” said Pettiford. “It's always a good experience to teach them new things and answer questions that they might have.”

Working with small animals and cancer patients as a veterinary technician broadened her animal handling experience. 

“I love what I do as a technician: making sure the pet is comfortable, doing the best I can for their care,” attested Pettiford “That's something I take pride in doing.”

Pettiford prepares her veterinary school applications with an eye to the future. She plans to focus on exotic animals and wildlife along with histopathology. 

“I want every day I show up to work to be unique and spontaneous!”
