reading comprehension biography grade 5

Description

Explore Dr. Seuss' life with this easy-to-use , print and go biography pack. Perfect for Read Across America Week , or any time of the year, this pack offers an engaging experience for students. Discover the life and struggles of Dr. Seuss through a student-friendly narrative. The interactive activities foster reading , critical thinking , and creativity .

I enjoy learning about different people, about their lives and careers. I try not to miss any opportunity to teach my students about famous or important people. I put together the Biography Packs to help them learn in a fun and engaging way about different people’s lives and how they changed the world we see today.

I tried to include a high interest passage and other activities to go along with it . Check them out below:

•The passage is student friendly , yet informative , containing all the important aspects of the person’s life and work.

•Afterward I chose to add a reading comprehension sheet ( differentiated on two levels) to make sure the students fixed some of the information.

•The timeline sheet (also differentiated on two levels) helps the students gain an idea of the time period discussed while also arranging in chronological order the main events in the person’s life.

•The quote activity ( differentiated on two levels) allows the student to discuss one of the person’s most famous quotes.

•The writing activities (informational and opinion) encourage students to dig deeper into the topic and express their own opinions.

•I also included a sheet called Other Opinions , where students can go around the class, or work in pairs or groups, and write each other’s opinions on the topic. I found this activity to be great for discussions or debates. It’s one of my students’ favorite.

•The Venn Diagram sheet ( differentiated on two levels) allows the student to compare the person to another one already suggested, or to someone chosen by them.

Finally, I included a brochure that students can fill in based on the text or their own research. They can keep it and collect all of them, if you plan to purchase more biography packs . We actually have a folder for each student where they keep their biography brochures.

As fun coloring activities , there are also bookmarks and a quote poster . I would recommend printing the bookmarks sheet on cardstock.

You can go paperless with the digital version of the resource available in Google Slides. The backgrounds of the slides are embedded, so it’s student friendly. It’s also in widescreen format, so it’s very comfortable to use.

Look for the icons that will help you navigate through the resource. And also for the symbols that indicate the level of difficulty.

To sum up, included are:

•One high-interest passage about Theodor Seuss Geisel;

•Comprehension Questions – 2 levels – multiple choice / long and short answer

•Timeline – 2 Levels – cut & paste / fill in

•Famous Quote Poster to Color

•Famous Quote Writing Activity - 2 Levels – Given Quote / Quote chosen by student

•Informational Writing Activity

•Opinion Writing Activity

•Other Opinions on the topic – group Activity

•Character Traits

•Let’s Compare – Venn Diagram Activity – 2 Levels – Compare with a given person / Compare with someone chosen by student

The reading passages were designed for an independent reading level for second through fourth grade. I use them with my second graders as a guided reading during direct instruction. Students used them to do their biography reports and scaffolding was provided along the way.

Teachers of older students have also shared how they can go deeper with reading comprehension skills like categorizing and compare and contrast as well as writing multi-paragraph essays that utilize those skills.

So, to answer the question – it depends on how you use the resources with your students.

It’s my highest priority that you’re 100% satisfied with your purchase. Please see our  refund policy .
