Telstra announces T22 small business plans

corinne-reichert-headshot-2.jpg

Telstra has taken the wraps off its new small business plans, including a 24/7 tech support service and a fixed-line fault "concierge".

The plans were announced as part of the Telstra2022 strategy unveiled in June, which saw 8,000 jobs axed and is focused on "simplifying" the telco's offerings.

"Our new approach for small business is built around three things: Flexibility to enable businesses to scale and choose what is right for them; greater cost certainty and value; and expert service and advice," Telstra CEO Andy Penn said.

"This is a significant increase to the level of dedicated service and support we provide small businesses, to help take away complexity and give them peace of mind with their technology usage and support."

Under the AU$69 per month Business Choice mobile plan, small business will be able to order a mobile device -- with tablet plans costing AU$29 per month -- with no lock-in contracts, meaning they can add and subtract mobile plans month-to-month as their business peaks; remove excess data charges in Australia; and provide choices of add-ons, including business devices such as the Microsoft Surface Go.

According to the telco, making the plans more flexible will enable small businesses to scale with more cost certainty.

Telstra Platinum for Business is the telco's 24/7 phone and online tech advice and support offering, which comes with an on-call IT team that provides advice, installation, setup, troubleshooting across new technology hardware, software, cloud, and payment services. The service is priced at AU$40 per month or AU$60 per month with Platinum Business Security Service thrown in.

"From 26 December, Platinum for Business Security Service will also be available to small business customers, providing three security assessments, an annual health check report, and updates on the latest threats to help keep businesses up to date about their security," the telco explained.

Telstra is also launching unlimited data broadband plans starting at AU$100 per month for 24 months as a standard inclusion on its Business Bundle plans, which also includes a Telstra Business Smart Modem providing mobile backup for broadband dropouts.

In addition, the telco said it will triple its small business specialists in retail stores nationwide, bringing the number up to 3,000.

Telstra will also launch a new national IT channel for small business customers who have "more complex technology needs", called Telstra Business Technology Centres, in early 2019.

"Telstra Business Technology Centres ... will operate across a national footprint of 28 regions and be run by expert teams from Telstra's existing group of channel partners," Telstra said.

"The teams in each centre will provide personal and virtual account management to local business customers, helping them make the most of technology to do things such as be found and sell online, operate virtual teams across geographies, and keep their operations and their customers' data safe and secure."

Lastly, Telstra's new "concierge" tech support service will help small business customers with National Broadband Network (NBN) or fixed-line service faults, which will be included in all of its broadband bundles.

Previously under T22, Telstra had introduced new consumer mobile plans in July, which were based around greater personalisation as well as removing excess data charges and improving customer experience.

Telstra's goal is to have 20 core plans in a modular design by June next year covering both consumer and small business, with its next milestone under the T22 strategy to be to introduce a "market-leading loyalty program" in March 2019.

The four-pillar strategy for the next three years has six goals: to improve customer experiences; simplify its products, business, and operating model; extend its "network superiority and 5G leadership"; achieve global high performance in employee engagement; achieve a net cost productivity of AU$2.5 billion by FY22; and attain a post-NBN return on invested capital of 10 percent.

Telstra business NBN plans review

Telstra NBN business plans come at a premium price but include some great features and a full suite of support options.

Telstra

Anyone familiar with Telstra plans—business or residential, mobile or internet—likely knows that they tend to attract a premium monthly price. Telstra business NBN is no exception to this rule with the most expensive comparable plans in our database. Still, that extra monthly cost comes with great perks, including a static IP address and a modem-router with 4G backup . It’ll take a couple of years of connection to avoid the modem-router repayment fee, though, and some of the other features cost extra, too.

Opt for a Telstra business NBN plan if you don’t mind paying more for perks and a wide range of support options, but there are better value alternatives out there if your main concern is price and speed.

Telstra business NBN plans value for money

Telstra has made a name for itself by offering speedy residential NBN plans with unlimited data , albeit at a premium price, and that trend is no different for the provider’s NBN business plans. Interestingly, the cheapest Telstra business internet plan isn’t an NBN offering; instead, it’s a rare ADSL2+ plan.

Graphic of a woman comparing NBN plans

Whether you want more speed, better customer service, or just a better deal on your home internet , you can find everything you need to know about NBN plans by following the link below.

In terms of our database, the Telstra Unlimited Business Internet plan was the only business ADSL2+ offering at the time of writing, and one of only two in our comparison engine across business and residential plans.

For not a whole lot more per month, you can get the Telstra Business NBN Unlimited Data plan, though, which is typically priced at $110 per month and comes with 50Mbps typical download speeds during business hours.

While those download speeds are great, the pricing is less desirable and beaten by every other business NBN provider in our database for typical monthly pricing. The only proviso there is that Aussie Broadband offers ever-so-slightly slower download speeds (49Mbps), while iiNet and TPG offer some data-capped plans (although they also have cheaper unlimited offerings, too). You’re better off looking at the Optus Internet Everyday – NBN plan, the iiNet Business NBN 50 Value plan or the TPG NBN 50 L Business Bundle if you’re after a cheaper plan with the same speeds and similar inclusions.

For comparison, below is a daily updating list of popular business NBN 50 plans with unlimited data from our comparison engine.

Want to know which NBN providers scored top marks in our analysis? Follow the link below to find the best providers for value, speed and support in Australia.

The only other business NBN alternative Telstra currently offers is the Business NBN Unlimited Data + Premium Speed plan, which typically costs $140 per month for 100Mbps typical business-hours speeds.

It’s an identical story for Telstra’s business NBN 100 plan as it is for its NBN 50 plan above: you’ll have to scroll to the bottom of our comparison engine to find this plan with typical monthly pricing. Optus and Exetel offer the same 100Mbps business-hours download speeds for a noticeably cheaper monthly fee, with Aussie Broadband also cheaper and just behind at 99Mbps. Taking the full package into account, we’d advise going with the Optus Internet Everyday Fast – NBN plan over Telstra’s NBN 100 alternative.

For comparison, check out the daily list of popular business 100 plans below from our comparison engine (all of which have unlimited data).

Telstra business NBN features and perks

If you’re a business that’s purely concerned with dollars-to-data value, there are more cost-effective alternatives to a Telstra business NBN plan. That said, if you fancy a business NBN plan with some great inclusions, Telstra puts big ticks in the core boxes on the perks front. All of Telstra’s business internet plans come with included phone line rental as well as local and national calls but, strangely, you have to pay extra for the actual landline phone.

As is the trend with business NBN plans, all of Telstra’s business NBN plans come with a static IP address, which makes it easier to configure remote access, more reliable communication, server hosting and virtual private network (VPN) connections .

Additionally, Telstra also bundles a preconfigured, self-installed Telstra Business Smart Modem with 4G mobile backup. While this modem-router has a $0 upfront cost, you’ll have to pay a $216 fee if you cancel after the first month. This device fee diminishes the longer you stay connected. Stick around for 24 months, and you don’t have to pay anything extra for the Telstra Business Smart Modem.

One of the other things we like about the Telstra business NBN plans is transparency around speeds. This starts with expected download and upload speeds (the latter is rare), but you’ll also be offered maximum speed estimates based on the NBN technology servicing your business address, too.

Telstra business NBN customer support

After you’ve first signed up, Telstra also offers a dedicated connection manager to assist with any questions or issues while you get connected. Once you’re up and running, there are self-guided support steps on the Telstra website for troubleshooting issues. There’s also a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Telstra offers a full range of support options, so you can pick your preference. Get in touch digitally via Twitter, Facebook or online chat service. Alternatively, visit a Telstra store for in-person support (you can also book an appointment) or call 132 000 for phone support 9:00am to 7:00pm AEST Monday to Friday.

If you have connection issues, you can contact Telstra for basic tech support or pay extra for Telstra Business Tech Services. Telstra describes this optional support service as a tailored concierge experience, and while it includes 24/7 support for Telstra and non-Telstra tech, it does cost an additional $60 per month.

Most Satisfied Customers | Vodafone

Vodafone is our winner for the 2023 mobile plan provider ratings, with an impressive five-star score across most categories, including customer satisfaction, value for money, client service, billing and plan flexibility, while it scored four stars for network coverage.

telstra small business plans

How we rate business mobile plan providers

Our ratings compare mobile phone plan providers offering business plans, based on customer satisfaction as rated by Australians.

How many Australians do we survey for our ratings?

Canstar Blue surveyed 580 Australians with a current business mobile plan service for their feedback on mobile plan providers they’ve been signed up to. Respondents had to have a current mobile phone plan for a business and that business pays the bills.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics .

What criteria are used to rate business mobile plan providers?

Survey respondents are asked to rate their satisfaction with their business mobile phone plan provider from zero to 10 , with zero meaning extremely dissatisfied and 10 meaning extremely satisfied. Business mobile plan provider satisfaction is rated on the following criteria:

  • Overall satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a mobile plan provider as an individual score, NOT the combined total of all criteria.
  • Value for money: the price paid for the mobile phone plan was reasonable for the service experienced.
  • Network coverage: the mobile network offered good and reliable coverage.
  • Client service: the mobile plan provider offered good service and support, and was easy to get in touch with.
  • Billing: the mobile plan billing was clear and easy to understand and pay.
  • Plan flexibility: the mobile plan provider offered a reasonable amount of plan flexibility.

How do we determine the winner?

The winning brand is the brand that receives the highest Overall satisfaction rating . All the scores from the Overall satisfaction criteria are then combined and averaged to determine the overall winner.

  • Overall satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and therefore win the award. If a clear leading brand still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

Which business mobile plan providers do we rate?

To qualify in the ratings results, providers must have received a minimum of 30 responses to be included. Therefore, not all mobile phone plan providers offering business services will be compared in this survey. Providers rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

Best business mobile plan providers

1. vodafone, ratings result.

Vodafone came out on top for the second year in a row, scoring five stars for overall satisfaction. It also scored five stars for value for money, client service, billing and plan flexibility, while it scored four stars for network coverage.

Editor’s notes

Vodafone offers the option of SIM-only plans or plans that can be bundled with a device. All that you need to do is supply your ABN/ACN on sign up, or link it to an existing Vodafone mobile plan account, with additional business plans also able be added.

Telstra took out second place with four stars for overall satisfaction, value for money, client service, billing and plan flexibility, while it scored five stars for network coverage.

Telstra offers a range of SIM-only plans or plans with a phone, with the option to bundle services onto the one plan. Its plans and device selection are essentially the same offerings as what you’ll get if you sign up to a non-business plan. If you bundle a phone with a plan, you’ll choose from a 12, 24 or 36-month device repayment period.

Ratings results

Rounding out our ratings in third is Optus with three stars for overall satisfaction and billing, while it scored four stars in the remaining categories — value for money, network coverage, client service and plan flexibility.

Optus offer a range of options for its business phone plans. While you can pick a similar selection of SIM-only plans and devices to its non-business phone plans, Optus does offer McAfee protection on up to 20 devices on its Business Choice Plus plans. Optus also offers a ‘team plan’ which includes four SIM plans with data to share and flexibility, along with the option to add on additional SIMs for an extra cost per SIM.

Other business phone plan providers

Apart from the above-mentioned providers, there are several other telcos also offering phone plans for businesses, although many of these providers might only offer SIM-only plans and no handsets for bundling. These telcos include:

  • Aussie Broadband
  • Southern Phone

Choosing a phone plan provider

Access to a phone and/or phone plan for work can be an essential part of a business. Of those surveyed, 27% provide employees with a mobile phone for work use and 33% upgrade handsets every one to two years.

Despite several providers offering mobile phone services to businesses, 50% of respondents have always been with the same business phone service provider. A big reason for this could be that almost a third of respondents (31%) believe the provider offers good value, while 26% believe their provider offers the best coverage or is the only provider with coverage in the area.

When choosing a provider for your business mobile phone services, there can be a lot to consider. 17% of survey respondents claimed that they don’t find the time to compare other offers and switch providers, so it might seem like a lot to think about on top of operating a business.

However, when you break it down to a few points, comparing business mobile phone plans might be more simple than you think.

Phone with a plan or SIM-only

The first thing to consider is whether you’ll need phones bundled with a phone plan — such as an iPhone or Samsung phone — or if you simply need the phone plan on its own. If you need handsets with a plan, your provider choices will mostly be limited to the big three telcos (Telstra, Optus and Vodafone).

If you just need the SIM cards with a phone plan, then you have a wider range of options to choose from.

Additional extras

Some providers will offer business-related extras such as the ability to bundle multiple services, data sharing across plans, device security software and more. If these extras are important to you, you can then compare providers to see what is available and which telco will offer the best value for you.

How much mobile data you need for your plans is pretty important. Consider what your team will be using their phone plans for — such as working on the go, accessing emails, video conferencing, making calls, etc — will help determine whether you need a plan with lots of data or not. If phones will be used primarily for making and receiving calls and accessing emails, a smaller amount of data, or a data-sharing plan, might work best. Otherwise you’ll need bigger data plans for working on the go and video conferencing.

Mobile coverage

Of course, for some workers, a phone plan can be essential when travelling for work. If your team frequently needs to travel, especially to regional and remote areas, ensuring your choice of provider has good mobile network coverage in that area is essential.

While the Telstra, Optus and Vodafone networks all offer coverage to the majority of the country, it’s worth checking the mobile coverage map before signing up to a provider to ensure that the areas your team will be working from are covered by the mobile network.

Frequently asked questions

About this research.

Canstar Blue surveyed 2,022 Australian small business owners and key decision makers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group whose business currently pays for a mobile phone plan that is used for business purposes– in this case, 580 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.

AT&T: Best full-featured plans

Looking for a broad choice of bells and whistles? As a telecom behemoth, AT&T has plenty of cell phone features and packages to offer a business—around 20 plan variations, small to large. All plans include free US roaming, unlimited talk, and text messages, as well as unlimited texting outside of the country. Basic features like call forwarding, voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, and conference calling also come standard with all AT&T business cell phone plans, along with bring-your-own-phone support.

Business Unlimited plan prices start at $35 a month per line, and there is a new perk where unlimited data is included in the unlimited talk and text plan. This means there is no need to worry about overages or data caps.

AT&T business plans can also accommodate up to 10 lines per account, and they come fully loaded with perks—like Stream Saver. This feature optimizes streaming video on your phone to 480p so you can watch webinars on-the-go without dealing with a blurry picture.

Each plan also includes a decent array of iOS and Android smartphone options and even a few good ol’ flip phones. A 15% military veteran discount can be applied to the Business Unlimited plans, as well as AT&T-owned DIRECTV services (because, again, telecom behemoth).

Users are eligible for a discount if they elect for autopay and paperless billing but this discount is only applied until after two pay periods. We don't know why the discount cannot be applied earlier in the billing process but we do find it frustrating.

T-Mobile: Best flexible plans

Not sure exactly what you’ll need in a mobile plan besides future adaptability? T-Mobile, the third-largest wireless service in the US, offers four Magenta® for Business plans, all packed with unique features that set T-Mobile apart from the rest. The German-owned company has also earned a reputation for stellar customer service and was the first to eliminate annual contracts (an idea that stuck—none of the plans reviewed on this page require contracts). In April 2018, the company announced its intention to merge with Sprint under the T-Mobile banner.

All of T-Mobile’s Business cell phone plans offer the same basic features:

Unlimited talk and text

Unlimited 5G and 4G LTE data on our network

  • Unlimited mobile hotspot
  • Scam Shield

Unlimited calling and texting to Mexico & Canada

Unlimited video streaming

In addition, all T-Mobile Business plans include DIGITS, which allows you to access up to five phone numbers on a single device. That means you could answer calls to your work number and your personal number on one device—no more packing two phones in your bag every day. DIGITS also lets you share your phone number across multiple devices, so you can answer on your phone, smartwatch, tablet, or computer.

T-Mobile users with a Business plan can also add the PlusUp add-on and get extra features, like Voicemail to Text, HD streaming, 20 GB of 4G LTE mobile hotspot data, unlimited in-flight Wi-Fi, caller ID, and double the data speed when roaming internationally.

Keep in mind, though, that T-Mobile’s Business plans are available only on plans with two to 13 lines. If you need more than 13 lines, you’ll need to sign up for the 13+ Plan ($285 per month for 13 lines, plus $25 per month for each additional line).

T-Mobile plans also allow bring-your-own-device convenience, or you can buy phones up front with a single payment (there are nearly 40 iOS and Android phones to choose from).

Now that T-Mobile and Sprint have been merged for almost six months, some significant changes have taken effect. T-Mobile’s website is now the only place businesses can sign up for Sprint or T-Mobile business phone accounts.

Sprint still has an active business website for previous users but all new plans will be sold by T-Mobile on its website.

Verizon: Best growing business plans

Serving over 150 million customers, Verizon isn’t just big, it’s BIG. Such a mobile mammoth might not seem like the obvious choice for a small business, but for what it lacks in a personalized customer service reputation, Verizon more than makes up for by offering every cell phone feature there is, as well as dominant US, and near-dominant global, coverage. Like McDonald’s and Marvel movies, Verizon is everywhere.

While business owners can get business cell phone plans with limited data, we recommend choosing an unlimited plan if you have multiple employees (or do a lot of work via cell phone).

Verizon’s Business Unlimited cell phone plans are scalable from four employees up to and over 40. And with plans starting at just $40 per line, Verizon Business Unlimited plans are an attractive option whether you’re running a tiny company with no expansion plans, a medium-sized business with an eye toward growth, or a large enterprise with heavy cell phone requirements.

Verizon Beyond Unlimited plans also include unlimited mobile hotspot use, though your speeds are limited depending on your plan. Plus, you get unlimited calling and texting to Mexico and Canada—not to mention unlimited calling, texting, and data while in those countries. And naturally, you also get unlimited talk and text as part of your Beyond Unlimited package.

Verizon doesn’t skimp on device choices either. There are nearly 100 iOS and Android phones and tablets available—including the Verizon Jetpack, a mobile hotspot device that can connect 10 devices to its 4G LTE network and an additional five to 3G.

If your company requires truly “unlimited” cell phone service and scalability to grow and is in the position to pay for functionality with frills, Verizon Business Unlimited is the way to go. Bare-bones operations, however, might want to look elsewhere.

Each of our recommendations has its strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes the most difficult part about finding a phone system is determining exactly what you need and don't need. The best place to start is separating your needs between installing a new system, replacing a system or expanding system.

If you are having trouble sorting out exactly what your phone needs are, use this tool to help you understand what the best options are for your unique needs.

MintMobile: Most affordable plans

We are sure you’ve seen the commercials with Ryan Reynolds talking about this new phone carrier business with a fox logo called Mint Mobile. In fact, a lot of Mint customers were drawn to Mint because of Ryan Reynolds Hollywood looks, but that’s not the only thing Mint has to offer.

Mint is inexpensive and transparent, compared to other cell phone carriers with hidden fees and seemingly random regulations.

T hese are the prices for new customers and will last up to three months. After the third month, you are eligible to sign up for a 6- or 12-month contract on one of the tiered plans, all less than $35/mo/user, which is astronomically less than other providers.

MintMobile is no fuss, and you really do feel like you must be tricking the rest of the world with its pricing. The only issue is that MintMobile is fairly new, launched in 2015, coverage is not completely everywhere. There are still a couple of coverage gaps in the West, namely Utah, Nebraska, Idaho and Nevada. If you are east of the Rocky Mountains, you are good to go!

Teltik: Best perks plans

If you’re a strapped startup, New Jersey’s Teltik can get you up and running on the cheap. Teltik is a reseller service operating on T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network, meaning it can offer the reliability and reach of a giant provider at smaller-company prices. Teltik also has the advantage of being completely US-based, with 24/7 local customer service that’s not outsourced overseas.

3 more (non-business) cell phone plans reviewed by Business.org

Teltik appears to have a dozen plans, but they’re mostly just variations of the essential plan that offers all the expected basics. Not coincidentally, the features mirror those of T-Mobile, as they’re on the same network.

The most basic plan starts at $20 a month and includes unlimited calling and texting, mobile hotspot service, and unlimited data—with a 2 GB cap on 4G LTE speeds (meaning your speed gets throttled to 128 Kbps if you use more than 2 GB of data in a month). From there, you can upgrade your plan to include more 4G LTE data and more mobile hotspot data. Upgraded plans cost anywhere from $30 to $40 per month, and they all include one cloud-phone VoIP line—perfect for small businesses looking to save on all their telecommunications needs.

One distinctly entertaining feature (pun intended) of Teltik’s business plans? You get unlimited media streaming from over 40 music services (including Spotify, Pandora, and Apple Music) and more than 100 video services (including YouTube, Netflix, and any other channel you can think of). That means you can stream as much TV as you want without it eating into your data. It’s almost as if Teltik doesn’t want you to get any work done.

Another thing you need to know: Teltik doesn’t sell phones. Instead, the company operates on a strict bring-your-own-device basis. Any unlocked phone will work with its network, as will any T-Mobile device, of course. However, you will have to spend $10 plus shipping and handling to buy a new SIM card for each of your devices (unless they’ve already got brand-new, unused T-Mobile SIM cards).

The takeaway

Assess your company’s current cell phone usage, and projected future needs, before diving into any plan. What looks like a great deal could turn out to be more than you actually need—or you may have initially underestimated your business’s cell phone requirements. Also, if your company has both cell phone and regular office phone needs, check into bundling. The larger telecom providers offer both types of phone coverage, and bundling services is an easy way to save money in the long run.

Don’t want to carry around separate phones for work and personal calls? With the right VoIP service, you don’t have to. Check out our favorite business VoIP providers to see which ones offer on-the-go business phone capabilities.

Business cell phone plan FAQs

If you have several employees working outside of the office on a regular basis, desk-bound phones obviously aren’t going to work for them. Some may be only calling and texting while others will be checking email, using GPS navigation, and accessing the internet for work, but a cell phone is a must for employees in the field.

If you’re a one-person operation accountable to only yourself, you could get by with a personal cell plan. Keeping track of multiple employees’ hours, data, and providers, however, would be an extra headache you don’t need. For streamlining and collaboration purposes, a business cell phone plan would be the easier route.

Most of the plans we’ve reviewed here offer unlimited data—domestically, at least—so hitting the data ceiling won’t likely be an issue. But if you want to forecast how much data your business uses every month, providers make data plan estimators available on their websites. Or you could use a third-party calculator app.

BYOD stands for bring your own device . Another common term is BYOP for bring your own phone . These can mean that employees are using their personal phones, tablets, or laptops on their own carrier plans for work or that they’ve put those devices on the company’s plan. The upside? Less expensive than buying devices. The downside? Extra security concerns.

In the annoying absence of Wi-Fi, you can use a cell phone signal to connect a wireless device to the internet by switching on the mobile hotspot option and simply treating it like a Wi-Fi router. For multiple device connections, a dedicated hotspot (such as Verizon’s Jetpack) can provide a faster, and more stable, connection.

The best small business cell phone plans

Just as one shoe size can’t fit all, there’s no single cell phone plan that will suit every small company. But there are numerous high-quality plans that are worth considering as they strive to meet the needs of different types of businesses. To settle on the best cell phone plan for your business, you first want to figure out what kind of plan best fits your company.

How to choose a plan

Big four basics.

Business owners generally buy and pay for employee cell phones or plans or both when workers spend at least some part of their time off-site. With employees, you may want to track hours and data. In that case, to streamline operation and collaboration, a specialized business cell phone plan might be optimal. Today, more American businesses are accommodating work-at-home schedules that avoid meetings and travel, but note that quarantines and shelter-in-place orders will not last forever, so it’s a good idea to take the entire spectrum of your business activities into account.

  • Best cell phone plan deals: T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, Mint Mobile and more

There are numerous factors to reflect on when choosing a cell phone plan for your small company. Here are some major issues you’ll want to consider.

Business design: Is your proposed plan built for businesses and scaled for business customers? If you’re a solopreneur or an extremely small company with just a handful of employees, you may be able to get away with a personal friends-and-family-type plan, as opposed to a bona fide business plan. But once you have more than a couple of employees, start to think bigger about scalabilities such as multiple lines, unlimited options on talk, text, and data, data-only plans for companies that don’t need talk or text, and discounts for more lines or devices.

Network coverage: Consider sound quality, data speeds, coverage, and overall dependability. Make sure the plan you choose has good coverage in the area where your employees are located or are traveling. If your employees travel internationally, choose from plans that have good rates for the target countries. Also, don’t forget about airline coverage and in-flight texting services.

Security:  Some cell phone business plans offer virtual private networks, encryption, and other features to protect your company’s data. That could be quite valuable, as it relieves you of having to research, choose, and pay for additional services.

Hardware: If you need to supply employees with handsets, consider the kinds of phones offered with the plans you’re considering, or whether employees prefer to use their own smartphones.

Hot spot: Some business environments just don’t have usable Wi-Fi, but you can use a cell phone signal to connect a wireless device to the internet with a mobile hotspot. For multiple device connections, look for a dedicated hotspot with a fast, stable, secure connection, as well as other services like call forwarding, voicemail, call hold, analytics, and call queuing.

Data: Business plans should be generous with data, but unlimited is best — unless you really do not need data to conduct business.

Customer service: Count on problems arising, and when they do, you or your employees will want someone reliable to call before customers and clients get restless.

Price: Price is always a factor, and sometimes the cheapest plans offer just the service and features you’re looking for. But for something as critical as your business communications, do not buy on price alone.

Just in case you’re also looking for the best all-around mobile cellular deals, have a look at our survey of the  best cell phone plans of 2020 and our report on the best prepaid cell phone plans . Meantime, below are some of the business-oriented plans available now.

AT&T offers several variations of its Mobility Rate Plans — Mobile Share Plus, Mobile Select Priority Pooled, and Business Unlimited Elite, plus several in between — tailored to your budget for $50, $55, and $85 per line per month. Designed for small- to medium-sized businesses, the Elite plan offers unlimited data, talk, and text for up to 10 devices. The Pooled plan gives employees a data allowance alongside pooled data within a single account. The Plus plan lets you share data across up to 10 or up to 25 business devices. All plans feature unlimited domestic talk and text and unlimited talk from the U.S. to Mexico and Canada, plus unlimited texts from the U.S. to over 120 countries, along with high definition video streaming. The Elite and Pooled plans also feature 5G . Data speeds may slow down with congestion past certain data points.

Verizon markets the Plan for Business, Business Unlimited, the New Verizon Plan, and the Flexible Business Plan specifically for small companies. The Plan for Business starts at $175 per month for up to 25 lines, with data plans ranging from 25GB to 200GB for various prices and topping out at $1,000 per month. All plans include carryover data, safety mode, calling to and from Mexico and Canada, use of your device in Mexico and Canada, and data boost costing $15 per 1GB. With all business plans, you can turn your device into an internet hotspot and send unlimited messages to more than 200 countries worldwide. Additional smartphones cost $15 per month.

Simple Choice for Business by T-Mobile costs $50 per line per month up to $110 per month for up to five lines. You can add $10 per line per month for 6 to 12 lines and up to 2GB of 4G LTE Data. You can call and text from any Wi-Fi connection, as your unused LTE data (up to 20GB) rolls forward for 12 months. The plan features unlimited calling and texting to and from Mexico and Canada, plus you get up to 5GB of data at 4G LTE speeds. If you’re looking for a more streamlined option, T-Mobile Essentials only costs $30 per month per line for four lines. It offers unlimited 3G mobile hotspot data, unlimited talk, text, 2G data in Mexico and Canada, and unlimited texting and flat-rate calling at 20 cents per minute in over 210 countries. An additional 10GB of high-speed 4G LTE mobile hotspot data will cost you $10 a month. For a more robust plan, the Magenta for Business plan is available for two, four, eight, and 12 lines for $60, $40, and $30 per month per line, respectively. It features 5G service, 3GB of 4G LTE hotspot data, plus unlimited 3G data, in-flight texting and data, unlimited data and texting in over 210 countries, and unlimited talk, text, and data in Canada and Mexico. The included Digits program eliminates the need for separate work and personal phones, allowing you to access up to five numbers on one device and use one number across several devices.

RingCentral

RingCentral is a VoIP system that functions extremely well in an office setting. It supports unlimited calling and conferencing toll-free numbers and a customizable caller ID. Functionality is its primary priority; It supports useful features, like texting, online meetings, and faxing. When you use RingCentral, incoming calls go through the same call-routing system as your office phones. It helps make your office number into a portable communication system. You can call, text, and fax from your business number on any mobile device. The service could be used by two users to 1000 and offers four levels: Essentials, Standard, Premium, and Ultimate for $20, $25, $35, and $50, each with a free trial.

Cricket Wireless

Cricket Wireless is a highly-rated and widely-used prepaid wireless service that prides itself on its affordability. It typically costs users from $30 to $60 per month. With Cricket Wireless, users can build their own custom phone plans. If you prefer a more basic plan with talk and text and no data, that’s manageable. You can build off that basic plan by adding data (2GB, 5GB, or unlimited), unlimited talk and text, picture messages, a mobile hotspot, and SD quality video streaming. If you often travel or need international coverage, that’s also manageable. You can add coverage for Canada and Mexico and unlimited text to 37 countries, HD Voice, and Wi-Fi calling from a compatible phone. Data-only plans of 20GB and 40GB are available for $35 and $50 per month, respectively, with Mexico and Canada coverage in the mix.

Republic Wireless

Consider Republic Wireless for your business if you don’t exactly need a phone network, but you do use a significant amount of Wi-Fi. This plan functions more like a virtual network than other cellular providers. The vendor relies on T-Mobile and Sprint networks when Wi-Fi is unavailable. The base plan is incredibly affordable, starting at $15 a month or $150 a year for unlimited talk and text. At this level, Republic Wireless charges $5 per gigabyte of data, up to 15GB. Fortunately, Republic won’t let a person’s bill skyrocket if they start to use too much data; Instead, the company disables data before you stretch past your limit. Using their data plan, users can also opt to make their smartphone a hotspot. One feature we enjoy about Republic is their Extend Home service. This feature allows people to connect their cell phones with their home phone to access contacts, receive calls, or make calls from one direct number using either of their phones.

Alongside that, the Apple iPhone 15 has the Ceramic Shield front to keep it more protected while its 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display promises to be up to two times brighter than the iPhone 14 in the sun. There’s also a 48MP main camera with 2x telephoto lens to help you take great shots. The A16 Bionic chip has plenty of processing power to aid with software adjustments.

Tablets may not be the hot new thing in 2024, but they're still excellent machines for streaming movies, playing games, or getting work done on the go. And while it seems like the best iPads dominate most of the tablet market, there are still plenty of excellent Android tablet options for consideration if you don't want to be locked in Apple's walled garden.

As much as we love having the best smartphones in our pockets, there are times when those small screens don't cut it and we just need a larger display. That's when you turn to a tablet, which is great for being productive on the go and can be a awesome way to unwind and relax too. While the tablet market really took off after the iPad, it has grown to be quite diverse with a huge variety of products — from great budget options to powerhouses for professionals.

We've tried out a lot of tablets here at Digital Trends, from the workhorses for pros to tablets that are made for kids and even seniors -- there's a tablet for every person and every budget. For most people, though, we think Apple's iPad Air is the best overall tablet — especially if you're already invested in the Apple ecosystem. But if you're not an Apple user, that's fine too; there are plenty of other great options that you'll find in this roundup.

What are the best business NBN plans?

Factors to consider when choosing a business nbn plan, what is the best nbn speed for your business, what are the main features of a business internet plan, what about business mobile broadband plans.

Business NBN plans are adept at handling numerous online users at once. Your business stands to gain significantly from:

  • Dedicated support teams
  • Advanced security software
  • Backup networks

For remote work or internal website hosting, static IPs are at your disposal, too.

Tailored for small business owners and operators, NBN business plans cater to the unique needs of your enterprise. Owning a valid Australian Business Number (ABN) qualifies your business for an NBN business plan.

While not obligatory, opting for a business NBN plan can prove advantageous for various reasons:

  • Swift response to client needs
  • Seamless online collaboration, especially with remote teams and contractors
  • Effortless access to cloud services
  • Prompt resolution of Internet issues impacting your business

While small businesses can use residential NBN plans, the added features of priority support and quick response times may justify the incremental cost for those seeking exemplary Internet service.

Running a business requires a fast and reliable NBN service. When exploring business NBN options, it's crucial to choose a plan that fits your needs. Two important factors to consider when choosing a business plan include:

Similar to your home Internet, picking the right speed tier is vital for the best NBN plan for your business. Consider how your business uses the Internet—whether for video conferencing, large file transfers, or by how many people. This will help you determine the most suitable speed tier.

Add-ons and extras

Think about whether you need any additional features for your Internet service, like a modem , call packs, landline phones, Internet security, or dedicated customer service.

Not all providers offer the same extras, so assess their importance to your business and compare providers to find the best value for your money.

Your speed needs vary based on your company's size and Internet usage. While an average Australian might find NBN 50 sufficient for personal use, small businesses may opt for NBN 100 to guarantee faster speeds. Here is our take on the best speed for your NBN business plan:

NBN 50 - Best for sole traders

  • Maximum download speeds: 50Mbps
  • Maximum upload speeds: 20Mbps
  • Team size: 1 person

As per the ACCC, the NBN 50 speed tier stands out as the preferred choice for personal use in Australia. Its download speeds efficiently support video conferencing, and its ample upload speed allows for smooth use of cloud storage services like Google Drive or Dropbox.

NBN 100 - Best for small business

  • Maximum download speeds: 100Mbps
  • Maximum upload speeds: 40Mbps
  • Team size: 3–5 people

The NBN 100 speed tier is often ideal for households with four or more individuals, and this extends to small business users as well. Yet, for businesses engaging in frequent video conferencing or uploading substantial data, it's crucial to focus on upload speeds when evaluating plans.

NBN 100 plans may offer either 20Mbps or 40Mbps upload speeds. While a NBN 100/40 plan might have a slightly higher cost, it proves valuable when multiple individuals are concurrently participating in Zoom meetings.

NBN 250 - Best for heavy usage

  • Maximum download speeds: 250Mbps
  • Maximum upload speeds: 25Mbps
  • Team size : 5–7 people

Greater numbers of users result in diminished bandwidth for sharing. With an NBN 250 plan, you can simultaneously download large files and engage in video conferencing without any hitches.

The determining factor, however, is your connection type. For your business to benefit from this, it must be connected to the NBN through FTTP or HFC, though this is not universally available across all regions of Australia.

NBN 1000 - Best for larger teams

  • Maximum download speeds : 1000Mbps
  • Maximum upload speeds: 50Mbps
  • Team size: 25–30

The NBN 1000 stands as the highest-speed option in Australia, exclusively accessible to businesses equipped with either FTTP or specific HFC connections.

With an NBN 1000 plan, expansive teams of up to 30 individuals can seamlessly collaborate, download, and upload files without encountering any issues.

For businesses with a workforce exceeding 30 employees, reaching out to your service provider to ask about a customised NBN enterprise plan could see you getting plan options separate from the usual offering.

Features of business Internet plans can vary among providers, but generally, you can expect the following:

While regular IP addresses change each time you connect, a static IP remains constant. Many providers offer it for free with business Internet plans.

Why it matters: Static IPs are crucial for hosting internal websites or for remote worker access to your network (via VPN, etc.).

Additional support and priority

Business plans often include extra support, such as a 24/7 helpline or a dedicated account manager.

Why it matters: Residential plan support can involve long wait times. Priority support ensures quicker issue resolution, getting you back online and back to business faster.

Enhanced Service Level Agreement (eSLA)

Providers with eSLAs invest in extra support from NBN Co, extending those benefits to you.

eSLAs outline a timeframe and process for problem resolution, along with consequences if service standards aren't met. Residential plans lack these guarantees.

Why it matters: eSLAs help ensure a swift recovery for your business after encountering a problem.

Consider opting for a business mobile broadband plan if you're a sole trader, remote worker, or someone who needs Internet access on the go in various settings.

Here are some advantages of a business mobile broadband plan over an NBN plan:

  • 5G access: Enjoy potentially faster speeds than NBN with the availability of 5G.
  • Portability: Work from diverse locations like the beach, cafe, or remote sites since it's not a fixed connection. Compact modems easily fit in your pocket or work bag.
  • Data sharing: Some providers offer data sharing for businesses, allowing you to share data with your team members.

However, there are a few drawbacks to consider:

  • Limited 5G network: While 5G is expanding, it may not be as widely accessible as 4G, especially in major cities.
  • Less data: Some mobile broadband plans offer less data compared to an NBN plan at a higher cost.
  • Device repayments: Although not overly expensive monthly, device repayments for a mobile broadband modem can add an extra cost over a 12-, 24-, or 36-month repayment period.

Compare NBN business plans

For those operating a home-based business requiring faster upload speeds and reliable uptime, opting for an NBN Business plan proves to be the optimal choice. The pricing of a business NBN plan hinges on your Internet usage for daily team activities.

If your tasks primarily involve web surfing, email correspondence, team communication, and handling small-sized files, a home Internet connection may suffice. However, if you frequently download large files, engage in HD teleconferences, and have daily client meetings, a business NBN connection with a minimum speed of 50Mbps would be more suitable.

How does a business NBN enterprise Ethernet plan differentiate itself from a regular business NBN plan?

The NBN enterprise Ethernet plan is tailored for sizable enterprises or those in need of ultra-fast upload and download speeds, reaching up to 1000Mbps. In contrast, a business NBN plan closely mirrors the structure of a residential NBN plan in terms of speed tiers and overall performance, albeit with added features and enhanced support.

How do I get into the NBN business?

Switching business services to the NBN can be a tedious task and will require you to have a different level of service getting a home internet plan. To move your business services over to the NBN, get in touch with Compare Broadband today.

Do NBN business plans surpass residential plans in speed?

In essence, no. NBN business plans provide identical speed and performance to their residential counterparts. On a network level, there's no differentiation according to NBN Co. Nevertheless, individual providers may exhibit faster typical download speeds for business Internet plans compared to residential plans, though this fluctuates between providers. The primary distinction lies in the additional features that retailers extend to business NBN customers, such as a static IP, priority service, and service guarantees—features not extended to residential customers.

How do I choose an NBN Provider for my business?

There are 5 factors to consider when choosing an NBN provider for business use: availability, speed, cost, type of connection, and reliability. For businesses, reliability is the most important factor when choosing an NBN provider. Unreliable internet can be stressful and counterproductive.

Do NBN plans include phone calls?

Some NBN Business broadband providers offer calls and a VoIP telephone at no additional cost. Some may charge an additional $5-$10 per month.

Compare Telstra mobile broadband plans here

What is telstra mobile broadband, telstra mobile broadband devices, what speeds can you expect with telstra mobile broadband, how do telstra's mobile broadband plans compare, how to recharge your telstra mobile broadband plan, faq about telstra mobile broadband.

Telstra Internet

NBN providers

Telstra has a bunch of different mobile broadband plans to suit you, no matter how much data you're after, or whether you want prepaid or postpaid. It even has 5G access with two of its plans.

Choose between Telstra's month-to-month postpaid data plans or its prepaid mobile broadband options. You can bring your own device, or bundle one from Telstra with your plan.

Telstra has two kinds of mobile broadband plans: SIM-only postpaid data plans, and prepaid mobile broadband. Currently, Telstra is currently the only provider to offer 5G speeds on its mobile broadband plans; Optus's 5G is limited to its normal mobile plans and home wireless.

SIM-only data plans

These plans all run month-to-month, and you can either bring your own mobile broadband device/tablet or get one from Telstra, which you can pay off over 24 months. There are four plans available:

  • Extra Small. 5GB for per month.
  • Small. 20GB for $25 per month.
  • Medium. 60GB for $55 per month. Allows 5G network access.
  • Large. 200GB for $85 per month. Allows 5G network access.

Once you've hit your data limit for the month, you won't be charged for excess usage, but you will have your download speed capped at 1.5Mbps (slower during busy periods).

Prepaid mobile broadband

Telstra's prepaid mobile broadband plans let you either buy a device outright or provide your own. Only the 12GB, 40GB and 180GB options are available as starter packs, but once you have your SIM you can recharge with any of the following:

  • 5GB for $20 with 14 days expiry.
  • 12GB for $30 with 28 days expiry.
  • 35GB for $50 with 28 days expiry.
  • 40GB for $150 with 12 months expiry.
  • 180GB for $300 with 12 months expiry.

Unused data rolls over on the 14 and 28-day plans if you recharge before expiry. These plans also include data-free sports and Apple Music streaming.

It's not compulsory to purchase one of Telstra's mobile broadband devices if you want a plan, since you can always BYO device. However, if you don't already own a device, you can get a range of different hotspots and mobile broadband modems from Telstra on a contract or outright.

Once you have your device, simply pop in your Telstra mobile broadband SIM and get online.

Contract plan devices

You can add these to a Telstra mobile broadband plan on a 12 or 24-month contract. If you leave your contract before its expiry, the early exit fee is equal to the remaining value of the device.

  • Netgear Nighthawk M2. $384 ($16/month on 24-month contract).
  • Telstra 5G Wi-Fi Pro. $599 ($24.95/month on 24-month contract).
  • Telstra 4GX Hotspot. $144 ($6/month on 24-month contract).
  • Telstra 4GX USB Modem. $99 ($4.12/month on 24-month contract).
  • Orbi 4GX Router with Satellite. $399 ($16.62/month on 24-month contract).

Prepaid devices

Each of the prepaid devices come with a certain amount of data to get you started. Unlike the contract devices, you can buy these ones outright. Keep in mind that they're locked to the Telstra network though and won't function with other SIM cards unless you unlock them.

  • Telstra Pre-Paid 4GX USB Modem. $49. Comes with 3GB of data.
  • Telstra Pre-Paid 4GX Wi-Fi Plus. $69. Comes with 5GB of data.
  • Telstra Pre-Paid 4GX Hotspot. $149. Comes with 20GB of data.

The speeds that you can expect on your mobile broadband plan depend on whether you have 4G or 5G access. Only the Medium and Large SIM-only mobile broadband plans come with potential Telstra 5G network access, with all other plans (including prepaid) restricted to 4G.

Telstra's 4G speeds are typically between 2Mbps and 100Mbps in areas with decent coverage. 5G speeds can be anywhere from 50Mbps to 300Mbps, but this can be highly variable depending on your location and a bunch of other factors.

However, an eligible plan isn't all you need to get 5G. You'll need to be in a location with 5G coverage, as well as have one of Telstra's 5G-compatible devices (like the 5G Wi-Fi Pro).

To give you an idea of how Telstra's mobile broadband plans stack up against the other major providers, we've compared plans from Telstra, Optus and Vodafone side by side.

TelstraOptusVodafone
Medium SIM-only data planLarge Data SIM Plan40GB SIM-only data plan
$50$50$40
60GB75GB40GB
$0.83 per 1GB$0.67 per 1GB$1.00 per 1GB
Data-free sports streaming, data-free Apple Music streaming, Telstra Air, Telstra PlusData sharing, Optus SportNone

Telstra's plan measures up fairly well against the competition. It beats out Vodafone's offering easily in terms of value, providing data at a cheaper rate. Optus gives more data for the same price, but Telstra has the advantage of a bunch of extra features that Optus lacks.

Beyond this, Optus lacks plans with higher data allowances, whereas Telstra goes all the way up to 200GB per month with its Large plan, and Vodafone up to 100GB. So if you're looking for a bigger chunk of data, Telstra is a great choice.

This advice only applies to prepaid mobile broadband, since the SIM-only plans refresh month to month. You can recharge in one of two ways:

  • Via the My Telstra app. If you've downloaded the My Telstra mobile app, use the service tab, choose the prepaid service that you want to recharge and click "Recharge now". Follow the prompts.
  • On My Account. Sign into your account on the Telstra website. Select the prepaid service you want to recharge, click "Recharge" and follow the prompts.

Telstra accepts the following payment methods:

  • Credit and debit cards, including Mastercard, Visa and American Express

Does Telstra offer wireless broadband?

Yes, although mobile broadband will be your best and only option for the time being. While Telstra has announced a home wireless plan , it's only available to a limited number of customers on trial before being opened up to everyone.

Mobile broadband will be a better option if you're on the move, though, since you can take your modem or hotspot anywhere for Internet access. Home wireless is only really useful at a fixed location, such as your house.

How do I unlock Telstra's prepaid mobile broadband device?

The method for unlocking your prepaid mobile broadband device is the same as unlocking any mobile phone with Telstra. You'll first need your device's IMEI number, which is either located underneath the battery or in the "About" section when you visit http://m.home on a browser while connected to the device's WiFi.

After this, you'll have to contact Telstra's unlock team on 125 88 80, answer some ID questions and then pay an unlocking fee as follows:

  • $80 if your device has been active for less than 6 months.
  • $25 if your device has been active between 6 months and 2 years.
  • $0 if your device has been active for more than 2 years.

Finally, you'll be given an unlock code. You'll need to enter this on a browser connected to your device's Wi-Fi.

Free Business Plan Template for Small Businesses (2024)

Use this free business plan template to write your business plan quickly and efficiently.

A stack of books against a gradient background

A good business plan is essential to successfully starting your business —  and the easiest way to simplify the work of writing a business plan is to start with a business plan template.

You’re already investing time and energy in refining your business model and planning your launch—there’s no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to writing a business plan. Instead, to help build a complete and effective plan, lean on time-tested structures created by other  entrepreneurs and startups.

Ahead, learn what it takes to create a solid business plan and download Shopify's free business plan template to get started on your dream today.

What this free business plan template includes

  • Executive summary
  • Company overview
  • Products or services offered
  • Market analysis
  • Marketing plan
  • Logistics and operations plan
  • Financial plan

This business plan outline is designed to ensure you’re thinking through all of the important facets of starting a new business. It’s intended to help new business owners and entrepreneurs consider the full scope of running a business and identify functional areas they may not have considered or where they may need to level up their skills as they grow.

That said, it may not include the specific details or structure preferred by a potential investor or lender. If your goal with a business plan is to secure funding , check with your target organizations—typically banks or investors—to see if they have business plan templates you can follow to maximize your chances of success.

Our free business plan template includes seven key elements typically found in the traditional business plan format:

1. Executive summary

This is a one-page summary of your whole plan, typically written after the rest of the plan is completed. The description section of your executive summary will also cover your management team, business objectives and strategy, and other background information about the brand.

2. Company overview

This section of your business plan will answer two fundamental questions: “Who are you?” and “What do you plan to do?” Answering these questions clarifies why your company exists, what sets it apart from others, and why it’s a good investment opportunity. This section will detail the reasons for your business’s existence, its goals, and its guiding principles.

3. Products or services offered

What you sell and the most important features of your products or services. It also includes any plans for intellectual property, like patent filings or copyright. If you do market research for new product lines, it will show up in this section of your business plan.

4. Market analysis

This section includes everything from estimated market size to your target markets and competitive advantage. It’ll include a competitive analysis of your industry to address competitors’ strengths and weaknesses. Market research is an important part of ensuring you have a viable idea.

5. Marketing plan

How you intend to get the word out about your business, and what strategic decisions you’ve made about things like your pricing strategy. It also covers potential customers’ demographics, your sales plan, and your metrics and milestones for success.

6. Logistics and operations plan

Everything that needs to happen to turn your raw materials into products and get them into the hands of your customers.

7. Financial plan

It’s important to include a look at your financial projections, including both revenue and expense projections. This section includes templates for three key financial statements: an income statement, a balance sheet, and a cash-flow statement . You can also include whether or not you need a business loan and how much you’ll need.

Business plan examples

What do financial projections look like on paper? How do you write an executive summary? What should your company description include?  Business plan examples  can help answer some of these questions and transform your business idea into an actionable plan.

Professional business plan example

Inside our template, we’ve filled out a sample business plan featuring a fictional ecommerce business .

The sample is set up to help you get a sense of each section and understand how they apply to the planning and evaluation stages of a business plan. If you’re looking for funding, this example won’t be a complete or formal look at business plans, but it will give you a great place to start and notes about where to expand.

Lean business plan example

A lean business plan format is a shortened version of your more detailed business plan. It’s helpful when modifying your plan for a specific audience, like investors or new hires.

Also known as a one-page business plan, it includes only the most important, need-to-know information, such as:

  • Company description
  • Key members of your team
  • Customer segments

Benefits of writing a solid business plan

It’s tempting to dive right into execution when you’re excited about a new business or side project, but taking the time to write a thorough business plan and get your thoughts on paper allows you to do a number of beneficial things:

  • Test the viability of your business idea. Whether you’ve got one business idea or many, business plans can make an idea more tangible, helping you see if it’s truly viable and ensure you’ve found a target market.
  • Plan for your next phase. Whether your goal is to start a new business or scale an existing business to the next level, a business plan can help you understand what needs to happen and identify gaps to address.
  • Clarify marketing strategy, goals, and tactics. Writing a business plan can show you the actionable next steps to take on a big, abstract idea. It can also help you narrow your strategy and identify clear-cut tactics that will support it.
  • Scope the necessary work. Without a concrete plan, cost overruns and delays are all but certain. A business plan can help you see the full scope of work to be done and adjust your investment of time and money accordingly.
  • Hire and build partnerships. When you need buy-in from potential employees and business partners, especially in the early stages of your business, a clearly written business plan is one of the best tools at your disposal. A business plan provides a refined look at your goals for the business, letting partners judge for themselves whether or not they agree with your vision.
  • Secure funds. Seeking financing for your business—whether from venture capital, financial institutions, or Shopify Capital —is one of the most common reasons to create a business plan.

Why you should you use a template for a business plan

A business plan can be as informal or formal as your situation calls for, but even if you’re a fan of the back-of-the-napkin approach to planning, there are some key benefits to starting your plan from an existing outline or simple business plan template.

No blank-page paralysis

A blank page can be intimidating to even the most seasoned writers. Using an established business planning process and template can help you get past the inertia of starting your business plan, and it allows you to skip the work of building an outline from scratch. You can always adjust a template to suit your needs.

Guidance on what to include in each section

If you’ve never sat through a business class, you might never have created a SWOT analysis or financial projections. Templates that offer guidance—in plain language—about how to fill in each section can help you navigate sometimes-daunting business jargon and create a complete and effective plan.

Knowing you’ve considered every section

In some cases, you may not need to complete every section of a startup business plan template, but its initial structure shows you you’re choosing to omit a section as opposed to forgetting to include it in the first place.

Tips for creating a successful business plan

There are some high-level strategic guidelines beyond the advice included in this free business plan template that can help you write an effective, complete plan while minimizing busywork.

Understand the audience for your plan

If you’re writing a business plan for yourself in order to get clarity on your ideas and your industry as a whole, you may not need to include the same level of detail or polish you would with a business plan you want to send to potential investors. Knowing who will read your plan will help you decide how much time to spend on it.

Know your goals

Understanding the goals of your plan can help you set the right scope. If your goal is to use the plan as a roadmap for growth, you may invest more time in it than if your goal is to understand the competitive landscape of a new industry.

Take it step by step

Writing a 10- to 15-page document can feel daunting, so try to tackle one section at a time. Select a couple of sections you feel most confident writing and start there—you can start on the next few sections once those are complete. Jot down bullet-point notes in each section before you start writing to organize your thoughts and streamline the writing process.

Maximize your business planning efforts

Planning is key to the financial success of any type of business , whether you’re a startup, non-profit, or corporation.

To make sure your efforts are focused on the highest-value parts of your own business planning, like clarifying your goals, setting a strategy, and understanding the target market and competitive landscape, lean on a business plan outline to handle the structure and format for you. Even if you eventually omit sections, you’ll save yourself time and energy by starting with a framework already in place.
