⚖️ Compare and Contrast Thesis Writing Steps

A thesis statement for a compare and contrast essay is the last sentence of your paper's introduction. It sums up your essay and introduces the reader to all the main points of comparison.

The picture shows the steps to writing a compare and contrast thesis statement.

To create a solid thesis statement, you should do the following:

  • Make sure you are familiar with the topic . Try not to choose something too broad or narrow. You should be able to provide enough arguments to support your point.
  • Create a chart or a Venn diagram if needed. It will help you organize the similarities and differences between your subjects. You can create it yourself or use a template.
  • Try to include the most significant points of comparison in your thesis statement. You may refer to your chart to choose them.
  • Remember to use linking words . To make a smooth transition to the thesis, you can use words such as "compared to," "in contrast," etc.
  • Ensure your thesis statement is connected to the topic sentences. The thesis wraps up your essay's introduction. Then, the body paragraphs should cover the arguments you've introduced. So, make sure the topic sentences are connected to your main claim.

✅ Strong Compare and Contrast Thesis: Checklist

After you finish writing, answer these questions to ensure you have a strong thesis statement:

It's not enough to reword the prompt question or state the obvious facts. A solid thesis statement should also include a point to argue, so make sure it has one.

If you're analyzing what two objects have in common and how they are different, make sure your thesis should include arguments from both sides. If you're writing only about similarities or differences, it's enough to mention just one side.

Make sure to include the points that will actually be in your paper, and don't create any additional arguments just for your thesis.

Avoid including too many details or any irrelevant information. You have only one sentence to sum up your essay, so there is no need for lengthy explanations. By the way, if you use our tool, you can be sure your thesis will be strong and perfectly concise!

💡 What Is a Compare and Contrast Essay?

Compare and contrast essays require students to parallel two or more subjects together. The goal is to examine their similarities and differences and draw a conclusion from this analysis. The comparison subjects are often taken from the same category. For example, you can compare fruits, universities, cars, movies, etc.

📝 Compare and Contrast Essay Structure

You might be wondering how to organize your compare and contrast essay. Well, there are two outline techniques that you can choose from. You can make a compare-and-contrast essay outline using the block approach or point-by-point method.

The picture compares the pros and cons of point-by-point and block methos.

Point-by-Point Method

The point-by-point format lists each similarity and difference altogether. For example, you can start by mentioning a unique quality of one subject and then discuss how it relates to or differs from the other subject. The template of the point-by-point method is as follows:

Introduction Introduce your reader to the topic and write the thesis statement.
Main body paragraph 1
Main body paragraph 2
Conclusion Summarize everything and announce the results of your comparison.

Block Method

The block format presents the subjects separately. This means that the first body paragraph will include only the properties and characteristics of one thing. The second subject is covered the same way only after you've thoroughly reviewed the first one. The template of the block method is as follows:

Introduction State the topic and the thesis of your essay.
Main body paragraph 1 Pick one of the two subjects and describe its properties in detail. Each argument should be dedicated to one property.
Main body paragraph 2 Describe all of the properties of the second subject.
Conclusion Summarize your analysis and evaluate the importance of your work.

✍️ How to Write a Comparison Essay

At first, it may seem that compare and contrast essays are very complicated, but if you know all the details, the writing process becomes very easy. The step-by-step guide below will describe the entire process of essay writing. Use it to boost your knowledge!

1. Brainstorm

The best compare and contrast essays require finding all of the possible traits and parallels of two things. So, before you start writing, you'll need to brainstorm ideas and see all these properties of the chosen subjects.

One of the best ways to do it is to use a Venn diagram . It helps to visualize all the similarities and differences between two or more things. In a Venn diagram , overlapping circles are used to represent the properties of the subjects. One circle represents the first subject, another represents the second one, and so on. The similarities are placed in the middle where the circles overlap, while distinct properties are placed further within the circles.

Here’s an example of a Venn diagram:

The picture shows an example of a Venn diagram comparingapple juice and pineapple juice.

2. Make an Outline

After you’ve determined all the traits of your subjects, you can move on to outline your essay . It will come in handy to avoid repeating yourself and forgetting to add key arguments.

A compare and contrast essay outline uses the traditional essay structure of an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. All you have to do is to choose between the point-by-point and block methods.

3. Write a Draft

You’re now ready to begin the writing phase. At this point, all you have to do is glue everything from your outline together. Simply collect all your arguments and write them down alongside examples. Make sure to include all the key points. Also, do your best to follow the logic and avoid making groundless claims.

You can also use our compare-and-contrast essay generator to make a couple of flawless drafts that can be used as examples or as the foundation for your own essay.

After the draft is complete, we advise you to spend as much time as necessary polishing the quality of your arguments and overall structure. Make sure that your essay follows either the block or point-by-point method. Also, it’s vital to ensure that each subject has enough attention in your essay's body paragraphs.

5. Proofread

The last thing left is to correct all the possible mistakes. Follow this checklist to complete it:

  • Locate and fix all grammatical and punctuation errors.
  • Try to imagine yourself as the reader. It will help you become more attentive to details. Additionally, ask for a review of your essay from friends or family members.
  • Use assistance apps like Grammarly .

Now you know what it takes to write an excellent comparison essay! Feel free to use our compare-and-contrast essay maker to boost your creativity and writing skills.

We also recommend using our hook sentence generator and essay outline maker .

📍 Why Make a Thesis Statement?

You might have already heard about theses and thesis statements. Well, the main difference is: a thesis is the key point or argument of your assignment. And the thesis statement is this point expressed in one sentence.

Here’s one crucial thing you should always keep in mind when you write this sentence: it should meet the professor’s requirements.

There are two types of thesis statements:

  • Direct. It states the exact reasons for your paper. For example, "I do not support vegan lifestyle because animals do not have feelings, this lifestyle is too expensive, and a vegan diet is not healthy." Such a thesis sentence would tell the reader what each body paragraph or section is going to be about.
  • Indirect. Unlike the direct thesis statement, it does not state clear arguments. Here’s the sample: "I do not support vegan lifestyle for three reasons." The fact “I do not support vegan lifestyle” is the topic, and "three reasons" represent an indirect thesis statement. The assignment will contain these three reasons.

Most kinds of academic papers require a thesis statement, which can also be considered as your answer to the research question.

Now that you've learned the basics let's see what can help you to create an excellent thesis statement for anything: from history research to a critique paper!

📝 Essay Thesis Statement

You will probably write many essays as a high school or college student. Writing an essay is quite easy: it doesn't require any serious research on your part, and the resulting text is usually short. That's why you choose a narrow thesis statement that you can talk about in 4-5 paragraphs.

Your choice of a thesis statement depends on what type of essay you're writing. Here are some examples:

In an expository essay , you explain the topic logically, using your analytical skills. This type of essay relies only on facts, without any reference to the writer's personal opinion. The topic statement is the most critical part of an expository essay. It should be short and manageable so that you can describe it in just a few paragraphs. As you can see from the definition, it also should be based on facts and not on the writer's position. This category includes compare and contrast essays, definition essays , and others:

e.g., While online education is not always taken seriously, it is beneficial because of its flexibility and affordability.

On the contrary, argumentative essays are centered on the writer's personal opinion. This type of essay is also called persuasive because your aim is to persuade people that your idea is right. The thesis statement should reflect this:

e.g., Vegan lifestyle should not be promoted because it's expensive and not healthy.

Note: it's better not to use the word "I," because it may appear as too subjective. Remember: a strong thesis statement means an excellent essay!

✍️ Research Paper Thesis Statement

Unlike essays, research papers require more information, and they are lengthier than essays. That's why a research paper thesis statement should be slightly broader. This way, you make sure that you have a lot to discuss and can demonstrate your more profound knowledge on the topic.

Research paper thesis statements can be simple or more complex, depending on the purpose of your paper. Simple thesis statements can be formulated with the help of the outlines:

Something is true because of these reasons .

The US Constitution is not outdated because it's an integral part of the country's identity.

Despite these counterarguments , something is true.

e.g., Despite not being outdated, the US Constitution needs many amendments to keep up with the changing times.

You can make more complex thesis statements by combining several arguments:

e.g., The US Constitution is not outdated, because it's a part of the country's identity; still, some amendments need to be made.

Remember: it is essential to stay on topic! Avoid including unnecessary and random words into your statement. Our online thesis creator can help you in writing a statement directly connected with your theme.

Our thesis statement generator can help writing a thesis for your research. Create a short, catchy thesis statement, and you are one step closer to completing a perfect research paper!

📜 Dissertation Thesis Statement

Writing a master's thesis or a Ph.D. dissertation is not the same as writing a simple research paper. These types of academic papers are very lengthy. They require extensive analysis of information, as well as your ideas and original research.

Besides, you only have limited time for writing a dissertation, so you'll have to work on it systematically.

That's why it's better to come up with a thesis statement as early as possible . It will help you always stay on topic and not to waste your time on irrelevant information.

A dissertation can have an even broader thesis statement because of how lengthy your work should be. Make sure it's something you can study extensively and from different points of view:

e.g., The use of memory techniques at school can boost children's abilities and revolutionize modern teaching.

Don't forget to include a statement showing why your dissertation is interesting and relevant!

🙊 Thesis Statement For a Speech

Similarly, the thesis statement for a speech should be catchy and exciting . If you include it in the introduction, you will provide your audience with a sense of direction and make it easier to concentrate. The audience will know what to expect of your speech, and they will pay more attention.

Speech, unlike a research paper, includes only the most relevant information . If your speech is based on a paper, use your thesis statement to decide what to leave out. Remember that everything you say should be connected to your thesis statement! This way, you'll make your speech consistent, informative, and engaging.

Another useful tip is to rehearse your speech several times before deciding that it's finished. You may need to make some corrections or even rephrase the thesis statement. Take your time and make sure you do your best!

Now, we will concentrate on your thesis writing. We’ve prepared six tips that would help you to master your thesis statement regardless of the paper type you were assigned to:

  • Formulate your topic. Here’s the secret: the good topic makes half of the success when you write a paper. It defines your research area, the degree of your involvement, and, accordingly, how good will the result be at the end. So what is the topic of an essay? Basically, it’s a phrase that defines the subject of your assignment. Don’t make it too broad or too specific.
  • Determine the key idea. It will help you get an understanding of your essay subject. Think about things you are trying to state or prove. For example, you may write down one main idea; consider a specific point of view that you’re going to research; state some facts and reasons you will use in your assignment, or express your opinion about the issue.
  • Choose the central argument to support your thesis. Make a list of arguments you would use in your essay. This simple task has at least two benefits. First, you will get a clear understanding on what you’re going to write. It will wipe out the writer’s block. Second, gathering arguments for the topic will help you create an outline for your assignment.
  • Generate other arguments to support the thesis. Free thesis generators suggest you proceed with a few arguments that support your topic idea. Don’t forget to prepare some logical evidence!
  • Come up with a counterargument to the main idea. You might find this exercise a bit hard, but still, if you're dreaming of writing an excellent paper, think of another side of the argument. To complete this task, you should conduct preliminary research to find another standpoint and evidence behind it.
  • Provide your thesis statement as early as possible in your paper. If you're writing a short paper, put your thesis in the introductory paragraph. For more extended essays, it is acceptable to write it in the second paragraph. And avoid phrases like, "The point of my essay is…"
  • Make your thesis statement specific. Remember to keep it short, clear, and specific. Check if there are two broad statements. If so, think about settling on one single idea and then proceed with further development. Avoid making it too broad. Your paper won’t be successful if you write three pages on things that do not disclose the topic and are too generic.

Original thesis:

There are serious objections to abortions.

Revised thesis:

Because of the high risk of breast cancer or subsequent childbearing, there should be broadly implemented the informed consent practice that certifies that women are advised of such risks prior to having an abortion.

When writing your thesis, you use words that your audience will understand:

  • Avoid technical language unless you’re writing a technical report.
  • Forget about jargon.
  • Avoid vague words: “exciting,” “interesting,” “usual,” “difficult,” etc.
  • Avoid simply announcing the topic. Share your specific “angle” and show why your point on the issue matter.
  • Do not make judgments that oversimplify complex topics.
  • If you use judgment call in your thesis, don’t forget to specify and justify your reasoning.
  • Don't just report facts. Instead, share your personal thoughts and ideas on the issue.
  • Explain why your point matters. When you’re writing a thesis, imagine that your readers ask you a simple question: “So what?” Instead of writing something general, like "There are a lot of pros and cons of behaviorism", tell your readers why you think the behaviorism theory is better than cognitivist theory.
  • Avoid quotes in your thesis statement. Instead of citing someone, use your own words in the thesis. It will help you to grab the reader's attention and gain credibility. And the last advice: change your thesis as you write the essay. Revise it as your paper develops to get the perfect statement. Now it's time to apply this knowledge and create your own thesis! We believe this advice and tools will be useful in your essay writing!

Unlike most essays, comparing and contrasting pieces focus on two or more topics . Each of the examined subjects becomes a central theme. That is why compare-and-contrast essays might not describe a subject as deeply as a descriptive or analytical paper , for example.

How to Write a Compare-and-Contrast Essay?

The distinctive feature of a compare/contrast essay is two or more body parts. You will likely have to follow a 6-paragraph structure and use a block or point-by-point arrangement . Because of the two body parts, compare-and-contrast papers are longer than other essays. That is why you will need more time for writing and research.

If your instructions don't mention a particular arrangement type, you can use the one you like more. Here are the differences between these two structures:

Block arrangement Point-by-point arrangement
The organization of paragraphs is based on objects you compare. In a 6-paragraph essay, you devote the first two body paragraphs to one thing and then discuss another separately. Such an organization of paragraphs relies on the features you compare. Each body of the essay focuses on one quality the objects share or do not share. In every section, you should describe the relation of an object to a particular feature.

Define your topic and provide some background details. In the thesis statement, state the subjects and characteristics you will compare.

Discuss the first object. Each paragraph should describe one feature of the first item.

Discuss the first feature. Each paragraph should describe one feature and how both objects relate to it.

Discuss the second object. Each paragraph should discuss the same features but about the second object.

Discuss the second feature. Use the same items that you described in the first body.

Restate your thesis and summarize the main points of both body parts of the essay. In the end, add a final word on your key findings.

Let's say you need to compare tax systems in the US and Australia. Use the template below to organize your paper. And start with a thesis statement.

Thesis statement: Although American and Australian taxing systems share multiple similarities, they differ in ease of calculation and responsibilities of tax authorities.

Block arrangement

Body 1: USA tax system (item 1)

  • Ease of calculation (feature 1)
  • Tax authority (feature 2)

Body 2: Australian tax system (item 2)

Point-by-point arrangement:

Body 1: Ease of calculation (feature 1)

  • USA tax system (item 1)
  • Australian tax system (item 2)

Body 2: Tax authority (feature 2)

✍️ What Is a Good Compare-and-Contrast Essay Thesis?

The same rules apply to a good thesis, regardless of your essay organization . Take a look at this list:

  • A thesis statement indicates the content of the essay. Choose between an explanatory and evaluative thesis . An explanatory thesis implies descriptive writing without bias or a preference for one subject over another. Using an evaluative thesis means that you will need to explain why one object is better or worse than another one.
  • It is coherent with your writing prompt. Be attentive when choosing and researching your topics. If your writing prompt has any historical, geographic, or any other frames, don't break them.
  • It is precise. Don't use general statements. State precisely what you compare and contrast and what features the paper discusses. Include categories, terms, and specifications in your thesis.
  • It is academically written . Academic and professional vocabulary indicates that you researched the topic well and can operate the terms.

🎊 Tips for a Compare & Contrast Essay Thesis

These tips will help you write better thesis statements:

  • Pick a good topic . Before you start writing, make sure your topic is relevant and researchable.
  • Use your outline. It will be easier to focus on the key elements of your paper.
  • Pay attention to your word choice . Avoid slang, words with double meanings, and general terms.
  • Introduce your opinion or hypothesis. Unless your writing prompt provides other instructions, state your opinion on the topic.
  • Use compare/contrast words and transitions. This is especially useful when your thesis consists of two sentences . Use such words and phrases as "on the contrary, conversely, nevertheless, etc."

The basis of a good compare and contrast paper is the thesis statement. For an essay to be effective, it should have a strong thesis that grabs the reader’s attention. If a paper doesn’t have one, or if it has one that’s no good, it probably won’t do well. To write an assignment of quality, understanding how to develop a compare and contrast thesis statement is key.

Before tackling the bulk of your work, you should focus on perfecting the thesis. This establishes the direction your work is going in. Approaching the thesis for compare and contrast essays from different angles helps writers produce one that’s worth reading.

If you’re wondering how to write a thesis for a compare and contrast essay, carry on reading this article. Learn more about this type of thesis for assignments and how you go about producing one. You’ll learn how to persuade the reader and tell them what your point of view is.

What Is a Compare and Contrast Essay Thesis?

So what is a compare and contrast thesis statement and what’s the purpose of one? It’s a brief summary of what your argument will be about. It introduces the reader to your argument and gives them a clear idea of what’s to come. Crafting one helps you develop the  structure of a compare and contrast essay , as well as the outline. This is because it gets you thinking about your topics.

Condensing your whole work into a single summary can be challenging. However, doing so will help you expand your thoughts and come up with new ideas for the rest of your work.

Before coming up with the thesis statement for compare and contrast essay, ask yourself what your goal is. Simply put, it’s about finding and analysing the similarities and differences between two topics. Examples include:

  • The emotional responses of men vs. women
  • The MLA and APA citation styles

Writing about contrasting topics can be approached in two different ways. It’s important you understand each one before starting your work.

Tips for Writing a Good Compare and Contrast Thesis

Any type of college or university work should have a good-quality argument. If you’re wondering how to make a compare and contrast thesis statement good, there are several simple yet worthwhile things to do.

In this section, we’ll look at writing good thesis statements for compare and contrast essays. To produce one that’s well-written, you should know where your work is heading. This means having a thorough understanding of the topics you’ll be contrasting.

You’ll probably have to do a lot of research to understand your topics well enough to write about them. Gather information and evidence that you can use in your work. Once you know enough about them, you should see how they differ and how they’re similar. This should reveal the relationship between the topics and what similarities and differences there are.

Follow the tips for writing a good compare and contrast thesis ensure yours is of good quality.

  • Know what direction your piece of writing will head in. Understand your main argument and how you’ll conclude your work. If you’re struggling, create an outline and this should help you determine a route to go down.
  • Choose a topic that’s quite specific but still has enough content to meet the word count. If your topic is too broad, it’ll be harder to condense everything.
  • Include the most important comparisons and contrasts. Use an anchor chart to help determine what to include.
  • Use compare and contrast words to give your summary more flow and improve its readability.
  • Place the thesis statement of the compare and contrast essay at the end of the introduction. People reading your work should be able to easily identify it.
  • Choose your tone of voice carefully. Use language that’s to the point but also informative. Don’t put any words or phrases in that aren’t necessary and don’t contribute anything.

Use these tips to improve your thesis statement for comparison and contrast essays. Don’t just write it in a hurry; spend time on it because it’s an important part of your work. Come up with several versions and determine which one is likely to be the best to use.

Again, it’s best that you produce the thesis before tackling the rest of your comparison assignment. This is because it should help you determine where the argument is heading. It should also remind you of the key points you’ll be making throughout the work.

A compare and contrast essay thesis statement should be as long as necessary but, at the same time, as short as possible. Make it a few sentences in length. You should write what you need but not overdo it.

Compare and Contrast Thesis Formula

When composing a compare and contrast essay thesis, there’s a general formula you should stick to. Below is the formula in a single sentence. Further down are some examples.

“Although topics X and Y are similar because of A and B , topic X is (your argument) because of C and D. “

How exactly does this formula work? First, you’ll identify the topics you’ll be discussing. These are X and Y. Then, you’ll focus on some facts that they have in common. These are A and B – you can have more, but two should be enough.

Then, you’ll bring in your argument. You’ll then say that topic X wins the argument because of reasons C and D. Again, there can be more reasons, but you should keep it brief and have just two or possibly one.

Here are some examples:

  • Although medicine and chemistry are great degrees because of their job prospects and reputation, medicine is better for those who want to help people. This is because it involves direct contact with patients.
  • While Spanish and French are easy to learn and widely spoken, Spanish is better for those living in the USA. The reason is that the USA has many more Spanish speakers.
  • Although smartphones and tablets are great for mobile gaming, those who prefer a quality gaming experience prefer tablets. They cite the larger screens as the key reason why.

In each of the examples above, the topics X and Y are introduced early on. Then there are one or two things they have in common. Topic X is mentioned as fitting the argument. Finally, there’s an explanation for this that highlights a point topic X has that topic Y doesn’t.

Components of a Thesis Statement

A thesis statement is a one-sentence summary of your essay that indicates the direction of your argument and helps readers understand what role your chosen topic plays in your final analysis of the subject matter. In essence, a thesis statement acts as a compass that guides you while writing an academic paper, ensuring that you remain focused on the main idea. The following are some of the critical components of a good thesis statement:

Topic : One of the first steps when creating a thesis statement is to select a topic relevant to your chosen field of study. That could either be history, sociology, psychology, etc. Writing on a topic outside your academic field is not recommended as you won't be knowledgeable enough to discuss it properly.

Angle : the other component of your thesis statement should be your idea. It is technically your claim or insight on the topic. By stating your stand on the topic, the reader will easily know how the essay will flow. They will then critically look at the essay and try to understand every side of the divide. As you explain your angle, ensure you have sufficient evidence and examples to back it up.

Now that you have learned what goes into creating a thesis statement, let's take a look at some thesis statement examples. These examples will help you understand what makes a strong thesis statement and will also help you to identify which type of thesis statement is perfect for your essay.

This example is a criticism-based thesis statement. This thesis statement is centered on critiquing the American healthcare system. Using this example, you can identify that this thesis statement is directed towards criticism because it is critiquing the healthcare system.

Another example of a thesis statement on the informative thesis statement is "Neanderthals were the first group of humans to master the art of hunting with weapons." This example is an informative-based thesis statement as it provides more information on the Neanderthals.

When should i compare and contrast, making effective comparisons, comparing and contrasting as a brainstorming tool, structuring your comparisons, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about comparing and contrasting.

Many assignments will invite you to make comparisons quite explicitly, as in these prompts.

  • Compare the treatment of the theme of beauty in the poetry of William Wordsworth and John Keats.
  • Compare and contrast in-class and distance learning. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each approach?

Some other prompts may not directly ask you to compare and contrast, but present you with a topic where comparing and contrasting could be a good approach.

One way to approach this essay might be to contrast the situation before the Great Depression with the situation during it, to highlight how large a difference it made.

Comparing and contrasting is also used in all kinds of academic contexts where it’s not explicitly prompted. For example, a literature review involves comparing and contrasting different studies on your topic, and an argumentative essay may involve weighing up the pros and cons of different arguments.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

As the name suggests, comparing and contrasting is about identifying both similarities and differences. You might focus on contrasting quite different subjects or comparing subjects with a lot in common—but there must be some grounds for comparison in the first place.

For example, you might contrast French society before and after the French Revolution; you’d likely find many differences, but there would be a valid basis for comparison. However, if you contrasted pre-revolutionary France with Han-dynasty China, your reader might wonder why you chose to compare these two societies.

This is why it’s important to clarify the point of your comparisons by writing a focused thesis statement . Every element of an essay should serve your central argument in some way. Consider what you’re trying to accomplish with any comparisons you make, and be sure to make this clear to the reader.

Comparing and contrasting can be a useful tool to help organize your thoughts before you begin writing any type of academic text. You might use it to compare different theories and approaches you’ve encountered in your preliminary research, for example.

Let’s say your research involves the competing psychological approaches of behaviorism and cognitive psychology. You might make a table to summarize the key differences between them.

Dominant from the 1920s to the 1950s Rose to prominence in the 1960s
Mental processes cannot be empirically studied Mental processes as focus of study
Focuses on how thinking is affected by conditioning and environment Focuses on the cognitive processes themselves

Or say you’re writing about the major global conflicts of the twentieth century. You might visualize the key similarities and differences in a Venn diagram.

A Venn diagram showing the similarities and differences between World War I, World War II, and the Cold War.

These visualizations wouldn’t make it into your actual writing, so they don’t have to be very formal in terms of phrasing or presentation. The point of comparing and contrasting at this stage is to help you organize and shape your ideas to aid you in structuring your arguments.

When comparing and contrasting in an essay, there are two main ways to structure your comparisons: the alternating method and the block method.

The alternating method

In the alternating method, you structure your text according to what aspect you’re comparing. You cover both your subjects side by side in terms of a specific point of comparison. Your text is structured like this:

Mouse over the example paragraph below to see how this approach works.

One challenge teachers face is identifying and assisting students who are struggling without disrupting the rest of the class. In a traditional classroom environment, the teacher can easily identify when a student is struggling based on their demeanor in class or simply by regularly checking on students during exercises. They can then offer assistance quietly during the exercise or discuss it further after class. Meanwhile, in a Zoom-based class, the lack of physical presence makes it more difficult to pay attention to individual students’ responses and notice frustrations, and there is less flexibility to speak with students privately to offer assistance. In this case, therefore, the traditional classroom environment holds the advantage, although it appears likely that aiding students in a virtual classroom environment will become easier as the technology, and teachers’ familiarity with it, improves.

The block method

In the block method, you cover each of the overall subjects you’re comparing in a block. You say everything you have to say about your first subject, then discuss your second subject, making comparisons and contrasts back to the things you’ve already said about the first. Your text is structured like this:

  • Point of comparison A
  • Point of comparison B

The most commonly cited advantage of distance learning is the flexibility and accessibility it offers. Rather than being required to travel to a specific location every week (and to live near enough to feasibly do so), students can participate from anywhere with an internet connection. This allows not only for a wider geographical spread of students but for the possibility of studying while travelling. However, distance learning presents its own accessibility challenges; not all students have a stable internet connection and a computer or other device with which to participate in online classes, and less technologically literate students and teachers may struggle with the technical aspects of class participation. Furthermore, discomfort and distractions can hinder an individual student’s ability to engage with the class from home, creating divergent learning experiences for different students. Distance learning, then, seems to improve accessibility in some ways while representing a step backwards in others.

Note that these two methods can be combined; these two example paragraphs could both be part of the same essay, but it’s wise to use an essay outline to plan out which approach you’re taking in each paragraph.

Some essay prompts include the keywords “compare” and/or “contrast.” In these cases, an essay structured around comparing and contrasting is the appropriate response.

Comparing and contrasting is also a useful approach in all kinds of academic writing : You might compare different studies in a literature review , weigh up different arguments in an argumentative essay , or consider different theoretical approaches in a theoretical framework .

Your subjects might be very different or quite similar, but it’s important that there be meaningful grounds for comparison . You can probably describe many differences between a cat and a bicycle, but there isn’t really any connection between them to justify the comparison.

You’ll have to write a thesis statement explaining the central point you want to make in your essay , so be sure to know in advance what connects your subjects and makes them worth comparing.

Comparisons in essays are generally structured in one of two ways:

  • The alternating method, where you compare your subjects side by side according to one specific aspect at a time.
  • The block method, where you cover each subject separately in its entirety.

It’s also possible to combine both methods, for example by writing a full paragraph on each of your topics and then a final paragraph contrasting the two according to a specific metric.
