Disclaimer: In no way does Business of College Sports endorse any of these law schools. The authors of this article currently attend Florida State University College of Law and the University of New Hampshire, Franklin Pierce School of Law.

Many prospective law students inquire as to which law school is the best for sports law. We decided to look into this and create a list for students to reference during the application process. You can also compare law schools easily with our sports law program guide that breaks down what each school offers specific to sports law in terms of certificates, journals, student organizations and more.

Methodology: We looked at bar passage rates, employment data, cost of attendance, number of sports law courses offered, sports law certificate programs, sports law institutes/centers, sports law journals, and sports law societies. Alumni placement in sports law roles was also considered. Data and program information were found on the American Bar Association website and individual law school websites.

In no particular order, here are the programs we are highlighting based on the methodology above.

Tulane University School of Law (New Orleans, LA)

Tulane University law school

Sports and Entertainment Law: How to Pick the Right J.D. Program

Students interested in sports and entertainment law should consider campus opportunities and career goals.

Both sports and entertainment are popular passions, and many students interested in law should consider studying them.

Many law school graduates find success in careers that keep them out of the public eye. Others see their names featured regularly in publications like Sports Illustrated and Hollywood Reporter.

A sports and entertainment law career can put an attorney in the limelight. While the work can be stressful, it can also be fun, particularly for those who like the thrill of navigating high-pressure situations.

"It's probably a bit more unique and exciting than some of the other fields of law," says Jayson Weingarten, a senior college admissions consultant at Ivy Coach.

Both sports and entertainment are popular passions, and many students interested in law should consider studying them, experts say.

"I strongly feel that students should do what they love and what compels them," says Bhamati Viswanathan, a faculty fellow at New England Law Boston in Massachusetts. "If you care about sports, or you care about entertainment, there's so much work in those fields."

Career possibilities in sports and entertainment law have increased in a digital age as sports have become more global and entertainment has expanded to newer mediums such as virtual reality and social media platforms like TikTok. Sports and entertainment law experts can become agents, litigators and even intellectual property attorneys.

Having a law degree can also aid professionals in the sports and entertainment world who do not actively practice law, experts say.

"For example, a sports law student could end up becoming the General Manager of a major league team, or a front office executive managing the team's salary cap," Eric Blevins, sports law program manager for the Center for Sport at Tulane University in Louisiana, wrote in an email.

Here are three things to consider when selecting a law school for sports and entertainment law:

  • The specialization may not be necessary.
  • Location can matter.
  • S&E law is a popular focus.

The Specialization May Not Be Necessary

Students who attend any law school will leave with skills that can help them in sports and entertainment law careers, experts say. Some of those skills are contract drafting and negotiating.

"I wouldn't worry too much about trying to learn entertainment law in law school," says Tre Lovell, a California trial lawyer and owner of The Lovell Firm in Los Angeles. "Law school is about getting an overview about all law."

Lovell worked for an insurance defense firm after finishing the University of the Pacific's McGeorge School of Law in California, where he did not do coursework to practice specifically in the entertainment sector. In addition to practicing entertainment law, he now also specializes in business law, civil litigation, employment law and and intellectual property law.

However, an increasing number of schools have programs to prepare students for careers in sports and entertainment law. Students interested in this sector may benefit from entering such programs, experts say.

For example, Pepperdine University's Rick J. Caruso School of Law in California offers an entertainment and sports law degree. Recent courses in the program include patent law, copyright law and internet law.

When evaluating law schools, students with an interest in sports and entertainment law should also look at opportunities that exist beyond the classroom such as extracurricular activities, student groups and internship possibilities.

For example, in Tulane's sports law certificate program, students can hear from experienced professionals through the Tulane Women in Sports Law Symposium, participate in negotiation competitions through the student-run Sports Law Society and receive guidance from experts through the Tulane Sports Law Mentorship Program, according to Blevins.

Internships are especially worth exploring when choosing a school for sports and entertainment law, Weingarten says, because they can give students the chance to temporarily specialize in a role that piques their interest.

Lovell recommends that law students also seek moot court and trial advocacy experience.

Location Can Matter

When picking a law school of any kind, location factors into logistical considerations, like cost of living and distance from home. But for students interested in sports and entertainment law, location is important for less obvious reasons.

For more of a sports law emphasis, students may want to target schools in places near a number of professional and college teams. Those more interested in entertainment law might find more professional opportunities studying in entertainment hubs.

"Regional flair does maybe matter a bit more" for sports and entertainment law, Weingarten says. "Schools that are stronger in sports and entertainment are the ones that are already in the cities that are a little bit stronger in sports and entertainment."

Weingarten cites New York City and Los Angeles as places where entertainment law jobs are plentiful. Only a handful of cities, like Chicago and Miami, host teams in all four major professional sports leagues.

"On the one hand, if the one thing you really want to do is work for the Red Sox, you kind of want to be in Boston," Viswanathan says. "But every single place in America has sports teams."

Although location is worth thinking about, it's not definitive when seeking the best school fit in any law sector , experts say.

"What really matters is that you get a good, strong legal education," Viswanathan says. "Graduates from all law schools end up in every city imaginable."

S&E Law Is a Popular Focus

Many law schools are very selective. That was even the case a few decades ago, Lovell recalls.

Those who explored reach , target and safety schools when looking at undergraduate schools may want to take a similar approach when looking into law schools.

A potential downside of applying to law school for sports and entertainment law, which Weingarten says has "glitz and glamour," is the fact that applicant pools are even deeper than those for other law sectors.

"From the admissions perspective, sports and entertainment law is in a little bit more demand than other fields," Weingarten says. "It's important for students to understand that how many other students have that interest is going to matter."

That said, prospective law students interested in the sports and entertainment industry should be optimistic about finding their educational fit, even if it is not with one of the most prestigious law schools.

"I think that you can always have a home somewhere," Lovell says.

New program aims to develop sports law practitioners

Kelli Rodriguez Currie

Seattle University School of Law is set to launch a new Sports Law program this fall to provide its students with the knowledge, expertise, and resources needed to navigate the many legal issues that arise in the fast-paced sports industry.

Sports is a big business, both in the United States and globally, with billions of dollars of revenue generated annually. In addition to professional and minor leagues in football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and soccer, the United States is home to hundreds of colleges and universities that field teams in a variety of sports. Several U.S. teams and leagues have a significant and growing international reach.

“We are in a region that boasts a thriving sports culture, which makes Seattle U Law an ideal location to learn the practice of sports law,” said Dean Anthony E. Varona. “Given that the legal issues in sports are growing ever more complex, the industry needs excellent practitioners who can provide sound legal advice and strategy. Our Sports Law program will build on our law school’s existing strengths to help meet this need.”

The Sports Law program encompasses several degree options. JD students can choose to tailor their curriculum to focus on courses that pertain to sports law. This prepares them to fill general counsel positions with teams and leagues, serve as agents for coaches and athletes, build sports law private practices, and many more options.

Also offered are two Master of Legal Studies (MLS) degrees, in Sports Law and in Sports Law Compliance. These graduate degrees are designed for those who don’t envision practicing law but wish to familiarize themselves with sports-specific legal issues for careers in sports organizations. MLS graduates may work in contract management, event production, or university compliance offices to ensure teams comply with league and other regulations, to name only a few of the roles where strong legal training is a benefit.

The legal issues that frequently intersect with sports are numerous and varied, including contracts, intellectual property, labor and employment law, and antitrust law. With new legal and regulatory requirements constantly shifting, sports organizations need compliance and risk management professionals to help them navigate issues such as Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), gambling, and e-sports.

“While our law school has always offered a robust curriculum to navigate these issues, this program will provide students with the tools necessary to bridge the doctrine they’re learning inside the classroom to issues facing the sports industry,” said Kelli Rodriguez Currie, the program’s director.

The law school is expanding courses that specifically address- sports law issues to focus on both professional and amateur sports. The expanded curriculum will be coupled with sports law-specific advising to ensure students leave law school with a relevant base of knowledge, specific to their areas of interest within sports law.

The program will also bring students together with seasoned sports lawyers to build connections.  “Because Seattle U Law is located in one of the leading sports markets in the country, our students will have opportunities to learn from and regularly network with leading attorneys who work for several franchises,” Rodriguez Currie said.

She has assembled a who’s who of such attorneys to serve on the program’s advisory board, including the chief legal officer for the Seattle Seahawks, the general counsels for both the Seattle Mariners and the Seattle Kraken, and a partner at the law firm K&L Gates who works closely with the Seattle Sounders and the group responsible for bringing the World Cup to Seattle in 2026.

Students may also leverage the School of Law’s robust and comprehensive externship program to gain real-world experience with area teams. In addition to internships and externships with many of Seattle’s professional franchises, opportunities are also available with the athletics departments of the University of Washington and Seattle University, both of which field NCAA Division I teams.

As the business of sports continues to grow, sports organizations are under increasing pressure to engage on social issues, which require more support from legal and compliance professionals to make decisions that balance competing legal, business, and ethical demands.

“Seattle U Law is uniquely positioned to provide that training,” Varona said. “Our Jesuit Catholic tradition informs our sports law curriculum in significant ways, especially around racial and social justice issues, and the confluence of ethics and labor and employment law, intellectual property, and contracts.”

Frequently asked questions about the Sports Law and Business program

Is the allan "bud" selig sports law and business program a master’s program or a law program.

The Selig Sports Law and Business Program is a master’s program that is housed in the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. Graduates of this program will receive a master’s degree, not a J.D. degree. Applicants apply directly to the SLB program and are not required to complete the law application or take the LSAT unless they plan to pursue a concurrent JD/MSLB degree.

What can I do with a MSLB degree?

The MSLB degree is designed for students to achieve any desired path in the sports following graduation. Alumni of the program have gone on to jobs in the sports industry in areas such as operations, marketing/branding, compliance/legal, sales, community relations, communications, business development, sponsorships, student athlete/player development and more.

How long does it take to complete the program?

The SLB program is comprised of 36 total credits and can be completed in either one year or two years, based on the preference of the student. 58% of the 2021 cohort is on a two-year track, with the other 42% on a one-year track. Graduate assistants with Sun Devil Athletics are required to do the program in two years due to work commitments.

Is an internship required?

Yes, an internship is required as part of the SLB curriculum. It is the responsibility of the student to secure an internship, but the SLB department will assist as best as we can in finding an internship. If the internship is completed over the summer, the student will have to pay for the summer credits through ASU.

Can the SLB program be done online?

No, the SLB program is only available in-person with no online option.

What do I need to do in order to apply to the SLB program?

Applicants must submit the SLB application, resume, personal statement, two reference contacts and an elevator pitch to apply for the SLB program. Visit the SLB admission page  for full application requirements and our application timeline.

How are application materials reviewed?

The three main factors the admissions committee considers are previous sports experience, academic performance and quality of your application materials. For reference, the median GPA for our 2021 class was 3.55, and 100% of students in the 2022 and 2023 classes had previous sports experience, which includes volunteering, internships, jobs, and student-athlete experience.

What is the cost of this program?

The cost of this program can be found on the tuition and fees page . For more information about program and tuition fees, please reach out to Eric Border at [email protected] .

Does the SLB program offer scholarships?

The SLB program offers two Selig Scholarships each year, along with several graduate assistant positions with the program. Outside of the program, Sun Devil Athletics offers graduate assistant positions, including a select few that are only offered to SLB students. You can read more about these positions here .

Setting The Pace

Led by one of the nation’s foremost authorities in sports law, the Sports and Entertainment Law Institute brings the exploding worlds of sports law and entertainment law to life by hosting events highlighting important and newsworthy cases — recent guests have included former NCAA basketball star Ed O’Bannon, lead plaintiff on a suit against the NCAA alleging violations of both antitrust and right of publicity law, and the band The Slants, whose frontman Simon Tam played a key role in the Supreme Court overturning the bar on federal trademark registration for disparaging trademarks on First Amendment grounds. The real world doesn’t just come to our students, though; we send our students into it — recent legal residency placements have included Sony Music, Under Armour, and the Dallas Cowboys.

The SELI works in collaboration with the faculty of our renowned Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property, a top-10 intellectual property law program in the United States. Discover our globally-recognized faculty in IP law and one of the country’s most extensive selection of IP courses.

Learn From The Experts

The institute is run by Professor Michael McCann, a prolific sports law writer for Sportico, who has gained a reputation as one of the nation’s leading experts in sports law. The SELI is guided by full-time professors with deep contacts in the businesses of sports and entertainment who closely mentor students in the program. Courses are inventive and timely, and the SELI hosts many high-profile conferences and panels. You can also receive on-the-job training and earn academic credit working in our legal residency program with noted sports and entertainment law attorneys.

LL.M. in Sports Law

LL.M. in Sports Law

An LL.M. in Sports Law is attractive to many people who have an interest in sports and the laws that govern them. Some find that these specialized programs marry two strong passions: sports and the law.

It's an interesting time to study sports law. Leagues are increasingly becoming internationalized, which means that they can run into complex legal issues. Also, issues like gambling, steroid use, and even corruption mean that working in sports law can be exciting, if anything.

Whereas a general Master of Laws program might address some sports-related topic, a specialized degree in sports law will look closely at many specific issues in sports. Because the field is so broad, an LL.M. in Sports Law might cover a variety of topics, from copyright law to athletics law, trademark and even sports marketing. An LL.M. in Sports Law is attractive to many people who have an interest in sports and the laws that govern them.

The degrees might also address player contracts as well as collective bargaining arrangements, as well. Typically, these programs will also include topics that are applicable beyond sports law, such as arbitration and international business law.

Some schools offer specialized LL.M.s in Sports Law, as well as other programs that cover related fields, such as LL.M.s in Entertainment and Sports Law, for example.

Those who complete these degrees will have a solid foundation of how the law intersects with sports; an LL.M. can provide a springboard into the lucrative field of international sports law. Graduates can go on to a variety of post-degree careers, including working in sports teams' legal teams, or in law firms that represent sports leagues. Other career possibilities include working for sports merchandise firms or related companies.

Forging paths: msu law alumnus and aspiring sports entertainment.

sports law phd

In the realm of sports and entertainment, the intersection of law and passion often defines the trajectory of careers. For many, the journey starts with education, but it's the determination and guidance along the way that truly shape the future. Such is the story of an MSU Law alumnus who traversed the intricate paths of the sports entertainment industry, now offering insights and mentorship to a current MSU Law student with similar aspirations.

Meet Daniel Kim: The MSU Law Trailblazer Daniel Kim, a 2015 graduate of Michigan State University's College of Law, epitomizes the fusion of legal expertise and sports entertainment acumen. With a passion for sports, Kim envisioned a career that seamlessly combined his legal prowess with his love for athletics.

During his tenure at MSU Law, Kim distinguished himself not only academically but also by actively seeking opportunities in the sports entertainment area as President of the Sports Entertainment Law Society. Post-graduation, Kim's journey took him to Radegen Sports, a New York based Sports and Entertainment agency, as General Counsel.

When thinking of his own career path, Mr. Kim gives credit to his law school days, saying, “Michigan State University College of Law’s curriculum and support propelled me to pursue a career in sports law. The faculty and curriculum gave me both the legal skills I needed and the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with the leaders in the sports industry.”

A Meeting of Minds: The Mentorship Initiative Enter Charlie Sarchet, a current 3L at MSU Law and President of the Sports Entertainment Law Society. Charlie has a fervent desire to make his mark in the sports entertainment industry. Since his undergrad, Charlie has wanted to combine his love of sports with his curiosity of the law. After his 1L year, he landed his dream internship in Kalamazoo, Michigan with Willis Law and their affiliated sports agency, Willis Sports Agents, where he was able to gain valuable experience from their skilled attorneys and sports agents.

With the help of MSU Law, Sarchet found himself face-to-face with Kim at MSU's Broad Art Museum. Their initial meeting occurred at the Broad's Resistance Training: Arts, Sports, and Civil Rights exhibit. The exhibit, which explores the shared values between artists and athletes in advancing social justice-related issues, was a perfect setting for Kim and Sarchet, both interested in sports and the law, to meet. Thus, their meeting was a casual exchange of pleasantries and a convergence of minds fueled by shared dreams and aspirations. Kim's mentorship proved invaluable to Sarchet as he navigates the complexities of pursuing a sports entertainment law career.

The Ripple Effect: Inspiring Future Generations The impact of mentorship extends far beyond individual aspirations; it serves as a catalyst for nurturing talent and inspiring future generations. As Kim continues to pay forward the guidance he once received, Sarchet stands poised to follow in his footsteps, equipped with the knowledge and determination to carve his niche in the sports entertainment industry.

Their journey symbolizes the essence of the MSU Law community—a thriving ecosystem where alums empower and uplift the next generation of legal professionals. It underscores the importance of mentorship in cultivating talent and fostering innovation in niche domains such as sports entertainment law.

As Daniel Kim and Charlie Sarchet continue to forge ahead on their respective paths, their story serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring legal professionals. It exemplifies the transformative power of mentorship and the unwavering spirit of those determined to leave an indelible mark on the world of law.

An explosion at a Central Asian-themed cafe in the Russian city of Voronezh shattered windows and raised alarm on Monday, amidst ongoing tensions due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The incident, which occurred at the “Eastern Tea House” on Lenin Street, was reported in the early hours when no one was present in the establishment, thus avoiding casualties.

The Zvezda news service provided footage showing the extent of the damage, with windows blown out in the aftermath of the blast. Russian news agencies, citing local police, informed the public that an investigation was underway to determine the cause and potential perpetrators of the explosion.

This event added to a series of mysterious explosions occurring within Russia in recent times, including one in St Petersburg last month. On March 2nd, an explosion in St Petersburg damaged two buildings, leading to the evacuation of residents who reported hearing strange sounds followed by a blast and a fire. No casualties were reported in that incident either. While the cause of the St Petersburg explosion remains unknown, speculations have suggested it may have been the result of a drone attack.

Drone attacks have been noted in the city of Voronezh throughout the past year, indicating a pattern that might be associated with the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Just in January, similar incidents involving drone activities were reported, highlighting the broader context of heightened security concerns in Russia.

As the war between Russia and Ukraine persists, with reports of hypersonic missiles and various other weapons being used in the conflict, the incident at Voronezh’s “Eastern Tea House” is a stark reminder of the war’s far-reaching impacts, even extending within Russia’s own borders.

French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne expressed concerns about the conflict in Ukraine and highlighted the importance of peace talks involving Ukrainians during a press briefing. He highlighted the importance of security for Europeans and that it hinges on peace in accordance with international law. While not directly related to the Voronezh incident, these comments underscore the broader geopolitical concerns associated with the conflict.
