You don’t have to wait for the next yearly release of Autodesk Inventor to benefit from the new functionality and workflow improvements we’ve been working on.

Subscribers can have everything we have completed – as soon as it’s ready in the current ‘Point’ release. Log into your account now and download.

We typically issue 2 point releases that have new functionality per year. File types are not affected, and they are always compatible with the current release. P oint releases are a quick update and do not require a uninstall and reinstall, the new functionality is simply added to your existing Inventor 2022 installation.

All functionality released in the point releases will be incorporated into the next major release – Inventor 2023!

Ilogic enhancement – copy & paste a rule within the ilogic browser..

Copying iLogic rules to new components have been made easier.

You can now select the iLogic rule in the iLogic browser, Right Mouse Button click (RMB) and pick ‘copy’ then RMB click again and pick ‘Paste’, to copy your rule into the same component or another part or assembly.

Rename custom Colour Schemes in the editor.

You can now re-name your custom color schemes from within the color schemes editor.

Inventor 2022.1 includes a new option for the derive workflow, which allows you to switch out the base component of a derived part or assembly.

When hovering your mouse cursor over components in the assembly browser, Components that have their visibility turned off will highlight in the model window.

We’ve made it easier to group select components that you can’t see in the graphics window, with new selection filters for selecting all Invisible , or all Suppressed components.

Tip : You can assign a custom command key for these filters in the Customise dialog box.

Tip : Use the hotkey combination ‘SHIFT+RMB’ to bring up the selection filters at your cursor.

Quick access to presentation files

You can now open presentation files from within the assembly model browser.

Substitute model states

To clarify what workflows are available when a substitute model is active, the following commands will be disabled (greyed out) or will display a warning message.

In the Ribbon:

  • Place iLogic Component
  • Analyze Interference
  • Activate Contact Solver
  • Convert to Weldment

Component context menu:

  • Demote/Promote
  • Replace from Content Center…

Dynamic Simulation will display a message explaining the substitute model state (an assembly that has been derived into a single part) has no moving bodies.

Frame Analysis will display a message explaining the need to switch to a non-substitute model state.

Migration of Legacy Substitute Parts

When migrating substitute designs to Inventor 2022, the automatic check for updates process is no longer initiated.

Migration is not interrupted unnecessarily, and you can later unsuppressed the link with the base and use local update to get the latest Substitute version.

BOM manager enhancements

You can now select multiple adjacent or non-adjacent cells in the bill of material (BOM) manager and delete their contents.

When exporting your bill of materials, you now have the same export options that you have when exporting a parts list.

(Apart from ‘Title’ because the BOM in the BOM manager doesn’t have one!).

Content center red text on save.

Red text in the ‘Save’ dialog is used to indicate files that are not in the project workspace.

Content Center components or custom component libraries, that are saved in your project workspace or are defined as libraries, will no longer appear as red text in the save dialog.

Inventor 2022.1 What’s new in Part Modelling?

Multiple edge selection for chamfers.

When creating ‘Distance-Distance’ Chamfers in Inventor 2022.1, you can now select multiple edges on a shared face that don’t touch.

Window selection in sheet metal

You can now window select Sheet Metal Cut profiles.

Midpoint selection in sketches

You can now apply distance and 3-point angular dimensions to sketch line, arc, and part edge midpoints in Part, Assembly, and Drawing sketches – without having to manually add the midpoint first.

Edit and share sketch from sketch dimension.

It is now possible to edit or share a sketch from a selected sketch dimension in parts and assemblies.

When you select a dimension, the Edit Sketch option is available in the context menu for parts and assemblies. The Share Sketch option is available for parts only.

Inventor 2022.1 What’s new in Drawings?

Insert sketch symbol.

To make it easier to insert your sketched symbols, without having to re-pick the options, Sketched Symbol options are now preserved across Inventor sessions, on a per-user basis.

This includes:

  • Leader, Visible
  • Symbol Clipping

Delete sheets using the Delete key

You can now delete drawing sheets by selecting a sheet and pressing the Delete key.

The “Delete Sheet” command – available by RMB click on a sheet, has been re-named ‘Delete’.

Multi-sheet browsing

To make it easier to browse through the sheets in multi-sheet drawings, you can now browse using the ‘Next Sheet’ or ‘Previous Sheet’ commands, available on RMB click or by using ‘CTRL+Page Up’ or ‘CTRL+Page Down’.

Model States is a powerful new workflow that enables you to create multiple representations of a part or assembly within a single document to provide a convenient way to engineer, manage, and manufacture your designs with different dimensions and parameters, components, properties, or simplification. • Because variations exist in one file, there is no need to worry about breaking associations between files.

Model states can be used for the following: • Machining operations from the casted model to the final part • Sheet metal stages for multiple bend operations • Weldments for weld preparation and other machining operations • Product families that have different values for dimensions or features that are shown or suppressed • Alternative assembly positions to quickly switch between them visually or used for drawing views • Level of completion for each stage as your design gets assembled • Simplification levels for removing intellectual property or high levels of detail before export • iProperty information

The new Simplify command replaces both the Shrinkwrap and Shrinkwrap Substitute commands. With Simplify you remove components and features from complex assemblies to make collaboration and downstream use easier.

Export to RVT incorporates the new Simplify command to produce an RVT model having only the components and features needed for the Revit A Revit Exports browser folder is placed in the Inventor model browser. • It is populated with a node for the exported model. As long as the model is maintained in the specified path, you can edit, preview, open in Revit or an associated application, or update the RVT model.

For anyone who hasn’t heard of Fusion 360, it is the next generation design and manufacturing platform for Autodesk. • Fusion has a cloud enabled data management system called Fusion team. With Inventor 2022, Autodesk have made it easier to share data with Fusion 360 with a new workflow called ‘Send to Fusion’, which will automatically connect Inventor to your Fusion Team account, upload your part file to Fusion Team, and open your part file in Fusion 360. • There’s no need to export your file out of Inventor and then upload and import it into Fusion. With ‘Send to Fusion’ you can continue to update your part file in Inventor, and when you are ready, you can ‘Send to Fusion’ again and your Inventor part file will update inside Fusion.

In drawings, you can now change the look of your shaded views by changing the lighting style in your model. • To do this, just pick the light style in the model that you’d like to see in your drawing, and when you jump back, your drawing shaded view will update to show the new lighting style. • There are new drawing view options available to repurpose the camera views and 3D annotations created in the 3D model. Centerlines and center marks with extended lines now break when intersecting with dimensions. This makes it easier to read the dimension value.

Getting Started with Model States - Inventor 2023 Updates

The new Model States functionality introduced in Inventor 2022 software has many uses within your Inventor design files. It was introduced as a replacement for the pre-2022 Level of Detail assembly functionality, and also provides an alternative to the iPart and iAssembly functionality. The content below has been updated to reflect the changes in the Inventor 2023 software, and is designed to accompany the webcast I delivered on using Model States.  Click here to view my Inventor Model States webcast.

Model states have multiple uses within part and assembly files. Uses can include creating manufacturing stages, simplifying the display of an assembly for design work, or creating configurations of components in a design to represent various products. Model states can also be valuable when working with a large assembly to improve retrieval times and performance, or they can be used as a starting reference for model simplification. The model states shown in Figure 1 are examples of model states for part (top) and assembly (bottom) files.

Creating Model States The process to create model states in parts and assemblies is similar. The following steps describe the process:

How to create a model state.

1. In the Model browser, right-click on the Model States node and select New . If prompted, click OK to the message regarding the edit member scope setting. This is an informational message only. Alternatively, you can right-click on the model state you want to copy and select Copy . The model states, as shown in Figure 2 for a part and assembly, were created using the New option to duplicate the active Primary model state and are immediately activated once created.

The Delete operation is global and affects all model states regardless of the edit scope setting. To delete a feature or component from a model state, you must activate it and set it as suppressed.

3. With the new model state active, modify the configurable attributes for the part and assembly as follows to customize the model state. Once modified, each configurable attribute is assigned a column in the file’s internal model state spreadsheet.

  • Suppress/unsuppress part or assembly features in the model state.
  • Suppress/unsuppress components in the model state. Note: The bill of materials will list suppressed assembly components as a QTY 0.
  • Modify the iProperties, as required, for the active model state. In the Model browser, right-click the model state name or the model name and select iProperties . To help identify model state properties from the primary model iProperties, color is used. Black text identifies the primary model iProperties, while blue is used to identity properties specific to a model state.
  • Materials can be assigned to model states at the part level. To incorporate a specific part in the top-level assembly model state, the required part-level model state can be enabled as required.

  • In the Model browser, modify constraint offset values, as required, for the active model state.

4. Rename the model state using a descriptive name by clicking it twice (not double-clicking) in the Model browser and entering the new name.

5. (Optional) Once you have created one model state, you can use standard spreadsheet functionality to create additional model states or add customizable attributes. To open the spreadsheet, right-click on the Model States node in the Model browser and select Edit via Spreadsheet . Edit as required, save, and close. The model states update to reflect any new model states or edits to existing model states.

6. Save the file to save the new model state.

You can make changes to the model states once created. To do this, ensure that the required model state is active, verify that the edit scope setting is as required for the change, and manipulate them as needed. Once the edits are done, ensure that the file is saved.

Model States in Subassemblies Subassembly model states can be enabled within model states in the top-level assembly. In these situations, the model state must already exist in the subassembly. You cannot create, edit, or delete subassembly model states within the context of a top-level assembly (in place edit). To do this, you must explicitly open the subassembly in its own window to create/edit. For example, the Screw_Sub subassembly shown in Figure 4 is active in the context of the assembly. The right-click model states menu does not allow you to create a new model state.

Model States vs. iParts/iAssemblies

The model state functionality was introduced in Inventor 2022. It is a replacement for the pre-2022 level of detail assembly functionality, and additionally provides an alternative to the iPart and iAssembly functionality (still available in Inventor). With the introduction of model states, the model state functionality and the iPart/iAssembly functionality become mutually exclusive. The model state functionality is enabled by default in all new parts and assemblies. If you are using previously created files, consider the following:

  • If the file does not contain pre-existing iParts or iAssemblies, the model state functionality is enabled. Any level of detail representations that existed (assemblies only) are converted to model states.
  • If the assembly contains pre-existing iParts or iAssemblies, the model state functionality is not enabled. Any level of detail representations that existed (assemblies only) are converted to design view representations.

The process of converting an iPart or iAssembly table that exists in a pre-2022 assembly to model states is manual. You can either delete the table and recreate the configurations using model states or you can use spreadsheets, as follows:

1.Open the file, right-click on the Table node in the Model browser, and select Edit via Spreadsheet . 2. With the spreadsheet open, copy the data or save the file to a temporary location. 3.  Delete the iPart/iAssembly table. A Model States node appears in the Model browser, indicating that it is active. 4.  Create a new model state in the file. 5. Right-click on the Model States node and select Edit via Spreadsheet . 6. Copy the data from the iPart/iAssembly table into the model states table to provide a starting point for your model states table.

Note that the syntax is not the same in the two tables. For example, model states tables use Compute and Suppress for feature/component inclusion and iAssembly tables use Include and Exclude . Edits will be required for the model states table to be recognized and generate the required configurations.

Consider the following:

  • Unlike iParts and iAssemblies, model states are all saved and managed in the one part or assembly file.

Model States and Autodesk Vault

Model states offer capabilities similar to those found in iParts/iAssemblies; however, all configurations are stored in a single file instead of multiple files. Additional Vault integration functionality is available for model states if your Vault Professional implementation includes items. If your Vault implementation does not include items, any file that contains model states will display the primary model’s properties (e.g., iProperties, parameters, etc.). If you require separate files that can be managed and released, consider using iParts and iAssemblies. For more information, see “Working with Model States and Vault Files” in the Vault Help documentation.

Substitute Model States

A substitute model state enables you to swap out a complex component for a simpler one that represents it. The substitute still contains all of the BOM information that is normally associated with the assembly, as well as the physical information (such as center of gravity and mass). Using substitute parts reduces the amount of components loaded into memory, as well as the number of constraints and adaptive relationships that must be recalculated when changes are made. By simplifying the model, the intention of a substitute model state is to reduce the computing resources and thereby increase performance without sacrificing access to BOM information.

The model on the left in Figure 5 shows the Primary model state for an assembly. A substitute model state for the fan and its electronic components is shown on the right. In this example, the substitute part was simplified using a simple cylindrical-shaped part; however, substitutes can also generate a part file with surfaces or merged solid bodies to help make the substitute model state simpler to help improve performance.

Create a Substitute Model State

1. Open the subassembly that is to be simplified. This assembly is called the Owning Assembly . 2. (Optional) Create a reduced-part model state for the subassembly. In this model state, suppress any subassembly components that can be removed to help further simplify the assembly. This is not a requirement. 3. In the Model browser, right-click on the  Model States node and expand New Substitute . Select one of the options as shown in Figure 6.

  • The Derive Assembly option simplifies the assembly using the Derived Component functionality. A new part file is created that is then substituted for the assembly in the model state. The derived part is created in the same way as one that uses the Derive tool. You define its name, template, and location, and then use the Derived Assembly dialog box to control which components are included in the new part file. The new substitute model state is created using the new derived part file.
  • The Simplify command creates a simplified substitute part that represents the active assembly and uses that part in a substitute model state. The simplified substitute part is created in the same way as the one that uses the Simplify tool. The new simplified substitute part is automatically created, and a substitute model state is created.
  • The Select Part File option substitutes a single part file for the assembly. Selecting Select Part File substitutes a selected file for the assembly in the substitute model state. The part file can be a previously simplified assembly, simplified model, or another part file. After you select this option, you are prompted to select a component. The substitute model state is created using the selected part file.

4. In the main assembly, create a new model state and activate the substitute model state in any subassemblies, as required. Please note that when the substitute model state is active, a number of commands on the Assemble tab will be disabled (gray).

Tip #1: You can also create a simplified substitute model (with a substitute model state) by clicking Simplify in the Assemble tab> Simplification panel and setting the Substitute type in the Properties panel.

Tip #2: Individual parts cannot be simplified. To create a simplified part of a specific subassembly inside the top-level assembly, you must first open the subassembly explicitly (it cannot be edited and created in place) and create a substitute model state in that assembly. After saving and returning to the primary subassembly, the lower-level model state is available for selection in the higher level’s Model States folder.

Using Model States in Drawings and Presentations

Drawing Views

Any model state can be selected for use while creating base drawing views. When modifying the parent view, you can also change the model state that is active by editing the view. When creating a base view, select the required model state name from the drop-down list, as shown in Figure 7. To change the model state that is used in a base view, right-click on the view, select Edit View , and select a new model state name. All views that reference it will also update. With the release of Inventor 2023, model states can be used for Overlay. Hint: If you want an isometric drawing view to have a different model state than a 2D base view, create the isometric view as a new base view and orient it as needed.

Figure 8 shows a drawing sheet with two different model states documented. The 2D views show the parts list with one Vise assembly. The isometric view’s parts list shows all 4 vise components are included.

General Tables

A general table can be used to show all of the model state details for a drawing model’s configurations. To create this table, complete the following steps:

Figure 9 shows the columns that were added to the general table for a part and the resulting drawing table that was created. In the table, the column headers were customized to have descriptive names using the procedure described in Step 6 above.

Consider the following when working in a drawing with model states:

  • If a design change is made to a model state that is used in a drawing view, it will update to reflect the change when it is opened next. Any associated parts lists or general tables will also update.
  • The model state assigned to a view can be switched by editing the view and selecting an alternate in the Model State drop-down list.

  • If a substitute component is used in the model state to represent an assembly, it is still identified as a single item to provide an accurate BOM and parts list.

Using Model States in Presentations

A model state can be selected for use while creating scenes in a presentation file using either of the following methods:

  • With the model state active in the assembly, right-click on the assembly name in the Model browser and select Create Presentation , as shown in Figure 10. In the Presentation Template dialog box, select the required presentation template file and click OK . A presentation scene of the selected model state is immediately created.

  • Using the New option to create a presentation file, you can select the template and when prompted to select the assembly, select the assembly name and click Options at the bottom of the Insert dialog box. In the File Open Options dialog box, select the required model state for use in the presentation scene, as shown in Figure 11.

  • When creating new scenes in a presentation, use Options at the bottom of the Insert dialog box to access the File Open Options dialog box to select a different model state.

New York's viral new trash cans unveiled nearly 2 years after a $1.6 million contract with consultancy giant McKinsey

New York's much-discussed new trash cans have been shown off nearly two years after the city spent $1.6 million to contract with consulting giant McKinsey in 2022.

On Monday, NYC Mayor Eric Adams revealed the wheeled bin alongside NYC Department of Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch , who symbolically put a black bag from his official residence, Gracie Mansion, into the container.

Video of the launch, which saw Adams wheeling a bin onto the street while Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind" played, quickly went viral, drawing memes and ridicule from citizens of cities that have had similar bins for decades.

Under the new rules, which come into force on November 12, 2024, all properties with one to nine residential units will be required by law to use one of the latch-lidded waste collectors, now available to purchase online from $46.

The newly introduced requirement seeks to minimize the number of sidewalk rats . It isn't known exactly how many rats are in NYC, but a 2014 study suggested there were around two million, and a pest control firm in 2023 estimated there were close to three million rats in NYC.

Adams said the program was part of his administration's "Trash Revolution," which aims to clean up the city's streets. Officials estimate New Yorkers produce around 14 billion pounds of trash each year. But with the new rule directed at removing about 70% of this, curbside garbage piles are hoped to become a problem of the past.

Plans for the new bins follow the city's work with consulting giant McKinsey & Company, which was drafted in to help the city assess how to contain its waste. A Sanitation Department official told New York Streetsblog at the time that the project was worth around $4 million, but a spokesperson for the department told Business Insider $1.6 million was paid out to McKinsey for the contract.

According to an October 2022 New York Times article, McKinsey was scheduled to spend 20 weeks working with the Sanitation Department to determine what sort of bins would suit different streetscapes, what they should look like, and which vendors to use. The department told Business Insider that work on the contract concluded in April 2023.

The goal was to design a program capable of combating New York's decadeslong garbage problem, looking at waste collection methods used in urban areas around the world and focusing on containerization — or, in simple terms, putting trash bags in bins rather than on the street.

A New York City Sanitation Department spokesperson told Business Insider, "DSNY's limited work with McKinsey a couple of years ago is not directly related to this week's wheelie bin announcement."

"McKinsey did not determine or recommend policy — they did math around the fact that the City was interested in waste containerization, a strategy the Adams Administration is now aggressively pursuing," the spokesperson added. The bin design was the result of work conducted by city employees, another DSNY spokesperson told BI.

The solution decided upon is similar to systems already used in cities like Barcelona, where fleets of colored, uniform bins are often found on residential blocks.

The bin project is far from the firm's first consultation in New York. The Office of the New York State Comptroller shows that McKinsey has worked on at least 10 other projects with the state.

McKinsey declined to comment when contacted by Business Insider.

Correction: July 11, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated McKinsey's role in working with the New York City Sanitation Department. The department said that it hired McKinsey to help inform its efforts at waste management but that the decision to pursue the wheeled bins unveiled Monday was the city's and not a McKinsey recommendation. The story was also updated with a statement from a New York City Sanitation Department spokesperson and with new information from the department that the contract with McKinsey, originally said to be as high as $4 million, was ultimately worth $1.6 million.

‘Crumb Catcher’ Review: The Smother of Invention

An obnoxious inventor wreaks havoc on an upstate honeymoon in Chris Skotchdopole’s tepid psychological thriller.

Chris Skotchdopole’s feature directorial debut sounds like it might be about a creature who eats babies from under their high chair. If only.

Instead, it’s an aspirationally farcical home invasion thriller that never fully thrills, despite a game cast that does its darnedest to liven up an unfocused script — Skotchdopole wrote and edited his film, too — that’s fashioned from genre odds and ends.

The film opens as Shane (Rigo Garay) and Leah (Ella Rae Peck) head to upstate New York to spend their honeymoon at a luxe home they’ve borrowed from Leah’s boss at the publishing house where Shane’s debut novel is to be released. As night falls, there’s a knock at the door and they let in John (John Speredakos), an obnoxious cater waiter from their wedding, and his con artist wife, Rose (Lorraine Farris).

Together, the two uninvited grifters reveal a half-baked blackmail plot that centers on a sex video and an investment opportunity in John’s prized invention: a high-end table crumber, that tool fancy restaurants use to sweep between courses. A motormouth, John won’t take no for an answer, and his abrasive entrepreneurialism and irritating demeanor — far deadlier than any hatchet — set the film on a mildly violent path that hopscotches between “ The Cable Guy ,” “ Shark Tank ” and “ Funny Games .”

At the last minute, Skotchdopole throws in a bloody brawl and a shootout, but they aren’t enough to salvage a film that doesn’t quite know how to effectively manipulate issues of class and self-doubt so that his scary movie leaves a mark.

    About Presentations, Exploded Views, and Publishing. Use the default template or a custom template to create a presentation file (.ipn). Insert an assembly model and create tweaks, trails, and snapshot views. Use snapshot views to create exploded drawing views or raster images of the model.
