Studying history

Why study history? What's the best part about studying history? What kind of assignments do you get? How is university different from secondary school? And what's it like writing a dissertation?

Find out first hand from our students .

What makes it so worthwhile to study history? Do you need any prior knowledge for it? What does it take to study history? What does the job market look like for historians?

Our professors are happy to explain.

Would you like to leran more? Check out the ' study guide ' or come to one of our information sessions .

The three-year bachelor's degree programme in history has a comprehensive approach; as a BA student, aside from acquainting yourself with a wide range of techniques and conceptual frameworks, you also develop your research acumen and skills. Upon graduation, you will not only have a good command of historical events and periods, but you will also be well-versed in the humanities and social sciences. You will gain critical insight into the processes and structures that regulate society and you will know how to adopt a critical scientific attitude towards both the past and the present. BA students learn how to conduct historical research and how to disseminate their research results both in writing and orally., which enables them to engage in broader public debates. Choosing a minor allows them to get a solid grounding in another discipline of the humanities and social sciences.

Minor in history

Students from a different programme may opt for a minor in History. These students may also take the minor in preparation for an MA in history , as part of the abridged programme.

In the Master's programme in history , you get a chance to specialize in a particular period or theme and to write a dissertation about it. As a Master of History, you are expected to be capable of conducting scientific research on an independent basis; you know how to formulate a research question, how to take the necessary steps to arrive at answers and how to put your research results into word. Moreover, you have mastered the skills and techniques peculiar to your domain and you feel comfortable engaging with current events in the scientific world and in society at large.

Did your MA thesis whet your appetite for historical research? Then maybe a PhD would be right up your alley.

Doctoral programme

The doctoral process alternates between doctoral training, research work, including publications and communication, and drafting of the thesis, leading to the ultimate stage: the thesis defence.

n practice, the doctorate is a long-term test, a source of great satisfaction and of big and small difficulties, where one learns to excel and assert oneself. International openness is undoubtedly one of the major characteristics of the doctoral programme. An international mobility experience opens new scientific, professional and personal horizons, constituting attractive assets to put forward on the CV!

The mastery of a foreign language is already a good example, as is the expansion of one's network for future collaborations, or even a post-doctorate.

World War II bunkers built by German army unearthed during nature restoration project in Belgium

By Kerry Breen

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 10:34 AM EDT / CBS News

Work on a nature restoration project in Belgium unearthed multiple bunkers, trenches and other structures built there by the German army during World War II, officials announced this week.

The restoration work is being done at the Director-General Willemspark in Heist, Belgium, and focuses on restoring coastal dunes in a less than one square mile area by removing invasive plants, according to a news release from area officials.

Heist, also known as Heist-Aan-Zee, is in the northern Flanders region of Belgium. The area was the site of multiple battles during World War I. The violence there was immortalized in the poem "In Flanders Fields," and inspired the use of a red poppy as a memorial symbol for those who died in the war.

There were two German gun batteries built on the site during World War I . One was called Freya, the other Augusta. Both batteries held guns, observation bunkers, crew quarters and "all kinds of trenches and barriers," officials said. Most such structures were demolished after the war, officials said.

But in 1942, the park was again converted into a military stronghold by German soldiers. At the peak of the work, there were about 60 structures in the area, including ammunition bunkers and crew quarters that were meant to help repel an incursion from the sea.

"Anyone who grew up in Heist will not be surprised that remains of war were also found during the excavations," said Heist officials in a statement announcing the finds.

Several structures from the World War II stronghold were found preserved in the ground, including "three completely intact bunkers" covered under just a few inches of dirt. Each bunker had just one room, but were built with walls and a ceiling of reinforced concrete.

Officials also found two brick trenches, a fragment of concrete track that would have been used to ferry soldiers and supplies during the war, and a water well. During the excavations, workers also found "large mountains of rubble" that contained everyday objects like utensils, ammunition and more.

"These ruins aptly illustrate the previous frantic attempts to completely erase the park's war history," officials said in the news release. "The lighter structures were demolished and reduced to rubble, while heavier bunkers were covered with a layer of soil and hidden, as if they had never existed."

bunker-willemspark-16.jpg

More war constructions are likely in the park, outside the scope of the restoration work, officials said. No World War I relics were found during the project.

Archaeologists from the nation's heritage agency were on site to supervise the restoration work, officials said, and as the finds were made, they "mapped everything." However, the remains were covered again with sand once they had been thoroughly investigated.

"No one disputes that war remains have a heritage value, but this does not mean that every brick from the war must necessarily be preserved," officials said. The sand will preserve the remains for the future, according to the news release.
