EDiTE Research Program: Transformative teacher learning for better student learning within an emerging European context

The theme of the EDiTE program, Transformative Teacher Learning for Better Student Learning within an Emerging European Context , draws on the deep interdependence of educational research and practice. Therefore, over the course of the project, the EDiTE community envisions growing  into a leading European network for innovation in teacher education, accessible to academics, practitioners and policy makers.

TEACHER LEARNING

One of the most important issues in education is how to increase the quality of teaching, improve the effectiveness of classroom-level processes and develop teachers’ practical knowledge. Almost all curriculum development interventions aim at improving teacher learning, as this is the most important tool in supporting teachers to cope with new challenges, a process that has implications on individual, institutional and national levels.

We are interested in understanding how teachers learn about the learning of students. Thereby it will be necessary to pay attention to (1) the nature of teachers’ professional knowledge, (2) the collective or social nature of teacher learning and (3) the role of teacher research. A range of (qualitative and quantitative) research approaches will be used to find out more about teacher learning in the participating countries.

According to research results, innovative learning environments, typically found in “knowledge-intensive” schools, could serve as the most inspiring context for teacher learning. In a dynamic context organizational structures are favourable to achieving the enrichment of applied methodologies, launching local-level innovations, developing organizational culture, and increasing students’ learning motivation and outcomes.

To contribute to this innovative perspective, we understand teacher learning as “transformative learning” (when teachers understand their students’ learning to which they adapt their teaching, which in most cases involves a radical change in their professional conduct). This transformative learning does not only happen during teacher education, but during their whole professional life, a great part of which is work-based. Teacher learning has to be connected to student learning. This is more than a learning theory, teachers and students belong to a community/communities of practice.

STUDENT LEARNING

Student learning is not only what can be measured (e.g. in effectiveness studies) but includes non-measurable components. In fact, most of our learning experience is not measurable (Conner & Sliwka, 2014). In our research, we are asking about the implications of this fact for teacher education, conducting research on the nature of the (deep) learning of teachers whose starting point is their understanding of the complex world of learning of their students. Ethnographic, phenomenological and other approaches will enable researchers to pursue research at this level of understanding.

EUROPEAN CONTEXT

Taking the “European Teacher” (ENTEP/Schratz, 2010) as a starting point, we will aim to define what the emerging European context for teacher learning could be (designed or forecast; cf. the Bucharest Reference Research Center focussing on Foresight Studies) and what skills, competences and attitudes of teachers should be developed. Reflection on the future perspective of education in Europe will be an on-going focus for ESRs in the process of their collaborative work across the partner institutions and countries.

The EUCLID DIDOL (internal code for our online PhD in Instructional Design and Open Learning) is a distance-delivered, non-resident degree program offered by EUCLID (Euclid University), an intergovernmental treaty-based organization with a global university mandate.

Academic Presentation

The DIDOL offers an in-depth examination of the vast fields of Instructional Design and Online Learning, including instructional design, Learning Management System (LMS), eLearning, technology-enhanced learning, Open Distance and eLearning (ODeL) quality, Open Educational Resources (OER), Massive Open Online Courses, ODeL learner support, and publication of a doctoral dissertation which will establish the candidate as a subject-matter expert in a specialized topic of relevance.

This program focuses on the mastery of relevant areas of ODeL, with an initial focus on instructional design and a systematic study of concrete applications of ODeL. Rather than focusing on one area in particular, the EUCLID MDOL provides a broad and deep overview of the most indispensable ODeL elements.

The degree was primarily designed to train higher education institutions and government staff already working in the field of technology-enhanced learning as well as other educators and professionals seeking to expand their expertise to ODeL. It is also suitable to prepare other professionals and outstanding students for careers with governmental bodies, NGOs, multinational corporations and international organizations such as the European Union, the Commonwealth of Learning, UNESCO, etc…

What’s the difference between PhD and doctorate?

PhD is known as the Doctor of Philosophy and this is part of doctorate degree programs. Many people sometimes thinks a PhD Degree is higher than a doctorate, but this is not the case as both are on the same level and PhD lies within the doctorate category, which means none is better or higher than the other.

If you are planning to get into a doctorate or PhD program, it is important to understand that while both are doctoral degrees, the educational goals and typical career paths for each type of degree differ. Both PhD and Doctorate are the highest level of academic qualification and they have their strengths. Your decision should be based on what you want to study and how you want to use your degree.

The bottom line is that PhD focuses more on academic, researches and heavy on theory while doctorate degree is intended for you to master a subject in both theory and practice.

Professional doctoral degree examples include:

  • Doctor of Business Administration (DBA),
  •   Doctor of Education (EdD),
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and
  • Doctor of Public Health (DrPH). Or you could earn a PhD in Management, PhD in Education, PhD in Nursing, or PhD in Public Health. All of these degrees are doctoral degrees, even though some are professional doctorates and some are PhDs.

What qualifications are needed for PhD?

PhD/Doctorate are the highest academic level one can attained and only those those that meet the needed qualifications or requirements can successfully enroll for a PhD/Doctorate program.

To apply for a PhD/Doctorate you will need to hold a Master’s Degree with high academic standing, along with a Bachelor’s Degree with at least upper second-class honors. However, in some situation or some schools can allow you to apply for PhD/Doctorate even without a master’s degree.

Can I apply for PhD without a masters degree?

Although, majority of universities requires a Masters Degree while application for a PhD or Doctorate program, but in some case, you can apply for PhD without a masters degree. If you are planning to apply for a PhD program without a masters degree, you are free to do so as some universities offer direct entry to PhD programs from undergraduate or bachelor degree studies if you meet the school’s and program’s admission criteria. Also, some schools may offer dual programs, which allows you to obtain a Master’s Degree while you complete the coursework for a PhD.

However, a growing number of universities now offer one year masters programs that may be beneficial to you and some of the highest paying masters degrees may be worth exploring before considering direct-entry PhD programs.

The availability of direct entry bachelor’s to PhD programs and dual master-PhD programs may vary from school to school. So, it can be helpful to research specific schools and fields of interest before applying.

There are a lots of Doctorate programs in Europe that offer a great opportunity for students to gain invaluable experience working with world-class academics in an academic setting. Not only will you be able to build up your research skills, but you will also learn how to operate within a professional environment. There are hundreds of other doctoral programs available across Europe, that is not listed in our article, so if one isn’t right for you, keep exploring until you find the perfect.

European Education Area

Commission presents a blueprint for a european degree.

The European Commission has adopted a package of ambitious proposals for Europe’s higher education sector, with the aim of working towards a European degree. The package contains a blueprint for this new and universally recognised qualification, as a result of deeper and wider transnational cooperation between higher education institutions - a key component of the European Education Area.

Young female student, next to text bubble "Towards a European Degree"

The blueprint proposes a concrete cooperation path and outlines support measures for European Union (EU) countries and their higher education systems towards the creation of a European degree.

As part of the package, the Commission has also adopted 2 proposals for Council recommendations on

  • a European quality assurance and recognition system in higher education
  • attractive and sustainable careers in higher education

Both proposals go beyond the pure ambition of developing a European degree and are advantageous for the wide and diverse higher education sector.

Blueprint for a European degree

This blueprint builds on the results of 6 Erasmus+ pilot projects that have involved more than 140 higher education institutions from all EU countries.

What is a European degree?

  • A new type of degree awarded after transnational Bachelor, Master, or Doctoral programmes delivered at national, regional, or institutional level
  • Automatically recognised everywhere in the EU
  • Awarded jointly and on a voluntary basis by a group of universities across Europe
  • Based on a common set of criteria agreed at European level
  • Contribute to Europe’s competitiveness by equipping graduates with future-proof skills to master the green and digital transitions
  • Provide a strong symbol of our common European identity and strong sense of European belonging, reinforcing our common academic values and bringing people and universities together

What is the added value of a European degree?

For students , it will offer more opportunities to study at various universities in different EU countries and to graduate with one universally recognised diploma. It will give access to innovative and transdisciplinary learning opportunities across campuses to acquire the future-proof skills that Europe needs.

For higher education institutions , it will make it simpler to set up a joint degree programme with several universities across Europe, by removing unnecessary barriers. It will also help those universities to increase their competitiveness and attractiveness.

For employers , it will ease the recruitment of highly skilled qualified graduates who are ready to face the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

In view of the diversity of the European higher education systems across Europe, the Commission proposes a gradual approach for EU countries towards a European degree, with 2 possible entry points :

  • A preparatory European label - given to joint degree programmes that meet the European criteria; this means students receive a European degree label certificate together with their joint degree
  • A European degree - a new type of qualification awarded either jointly by several universities from different countries or possibly by a European legal entity established by such universities; this means students receive a ‘European degree’

How the Commission will support EU countries and the higher education sector

  • A European degree policy lab to develop detailed guidelines and action plans for the implementation of a European degree with national experts, higher education institutions, quality assurance/accreditation agencies, students, and economic and social partners
  • A new annual European degree forum that monitors progress and provides guidance, gathering high-level representatives from EU countries, key organisations in quality assurance and recognition, and representatives from economic and social partners
  • New Erasmus+ support for European degree Pathway Projects enabling EU countries, together with their accreditation and quality assurance agencies, universities, students, economic and social partners, to navigate the pathway towards a European degree; and for European degree Design Measures to enable higher education institutions to adapt existing joint programmes or to create new ones leading to a European degree

Why do we need joint degree programmes?

Transnational education is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’ option but a necessity, as

  • the key challenges of our time are becoming increasingly global, and Europe’s open strategic autonomy increasingly urgent
  • future generations must be equipped with the competences and skills that European societies will need to thrive in an ever more interconnected world

For this, we need to facilitate and accelerate the development of future-proof joint degree programmes, especially a universally recognised, European degree.

Go back to top

Towards a European quality assurance and recognition system

Quality assurance in higher education is key to ensure trust between universities and trust from employers in their degrees.

Although much has already been done, many higher education institutions in Europe indicate that quality assurance processes for transnational programmes are still too long, costly, and poorly fit for transnational joint programmes.

The European quality assurance and recognition system in higher education would

  • foster transnational cooperation of higher education institutions in Europe
  • facilitate people’s learning mobility
  • facilitate development of joint programmes
  • increase the ability to respond quickly to fast-changing societal and market needs with educational programmes
  • contribute to automatic recognition of learning experiences abroad and qualifications

The proposal invites EU countries and higher education institutions to simplify and improve their quality assurance processes and practices. This would

  • allow higher education institutions to adapt their programmes more quickly to societal needs
  • endorse innovative pedagogical offers and ensure that higher education institutions can deliver more easily transnational programmes that are quality assured and automatically recognised across the EU

The proposal also invites EU countries and their higher education institutions to scrutinise existing tools and practices with a view to making them fit-for-purpose.

More attractive and sustainable academic careers

Delivering the European degree also requires dedicated and skilled staff.

The Commission’s proposal makes recommendations to

  • ensure that national higher education systems address the uneven recognition of the diverse roles staff take on in addition to research - such as teaching, the development of transnational education activities, of micro-credentials, or mainstreaming sustainable development
  • attract talent and retain it in academia
  • create a working environment that offers high-quality and inclusive education, pioneering new joint transnational educational activities and ensuring knowledge sharing and relevant skills provision in a fast-moving world

To attract talented people and retain them in academic careers, higher education must offer competitive working conditions, where staff

  • can thrive, regardless of their personal background,
  • enjoy academic freedom in line with the principles of a democratic, open, fair, and inclusive society

Description of the eight EQF levels

Each of the 8 levels of the EQF is defined by a set of descriptors indicating the learning outcomes relevant to qualifications at that level in any qualifications system.

The learning outcomes are defined in terms of:

Knowledge: in the context of EQF, knowledge is described as theoretical and/or factual.

Skills: In the context of EQF, skills are described as cognitive (involving the use of logical, intuitive and creative thinking) and practical (involving manual dexterity and the use of methods, materials, tools and instruments).

Responsibility and autonomy: In the context of the EQF responsibility and autonomy is described as the ability of the learner to apply knowledge and skills autonomously and with responsibility.

Level 1 - learning outcomes

Level 2 - learning outcomes, level 3 - learning outcome, level 4 - learning outcomes, level 5 - learning outcomes, level 6 - learning outcomes, level 7 - learning outcomes, level 8 - learning outcomes, compatibility with the framework for qualifications of the european higher education area.

The Framework for Qualifications of the European Higher Education Area provides descriptors for three cycles agreed by the ministers responsible for higher education at their meeting in Bergen in May 2005 in the framework of the Bologna process. Each cycle descriptor offers a generic statement of typical expectations of achievements and abilities associated with qualifications that represent the end of that cycle.

1.    The descriptor for the short cycle developed by the Joint Quality Initiative as part of the Bologna process, (within or linked to the first cycle), corresponds to the learning outcomes for EQF level 5.

2.    The descriptor for the first cycle corresponds to the learning outcomes for EQF level 6.

3.    The descriptor for the second cycle corresponds to the learning outcomes for EQF level 7.

4.    The descriptor for the third cycle corresponds to the learning outcomes for EQF level 8.

You have highlighted how PhD training assessment has stagnated, despite evolving educational methodologies (see Nature 613 , 414 (2023) and Nature 627 , 244; 2024 ). In particular, you note the mismatch between the current PhD journey and the multifaceted demands of modern research and societal challenges.

Survey of European society from 1918 to 1939, with emphasis on the impact of World War I, the Russian Revolution, fascism, and the intellectual trends of the twenties and thirties. This course examines the political and cultural environment of Europe from the demise of the continental empires after World War I to the dawn of the thousand-year Reich at the start of World War II. This Age of Extremes saw the rise of liberal democracies, the flourishing of new artistic movements, and the birth of new technologies such as film. At the same time, this period was also marked by the ascension of dictators, crises in colonial empires, and one of the largest economic crisis in history. Perhaps more famous (or infamous) than these events are the individuals we will cover, which includes the likes of Neville Chamberlain, Francisco Franco, Adolf Hitler, and Joseph Stalin. We will explore the period through a variety of sources, including speeches, contemporary films, and a novel concerned with an even greater threat: newts.

LAW 657: International Human Rights Law* Francis Boyle 03:00PM - 04:30PM, MT, Online

Based primarily on a series of contemporary “real world” problems, the course introduces the student to the established and developing legal rules and procedures governing the protection of international human rights. Its thesis is that there exists a substantial body of substantive and procedural International Human Rights Law, and that lawyers, government officials, and concerned citizens should be familiar with the policies underlying this law and its enforcement, as well as with the potential it offers for improving the basic lot of human beings everywhere. Additionally, the course presupposes that the meaning of “human rights” is undergoing fundamental expansion, and therefore explores Marxist and Third World conceptions of human rights as well as those derived from the liberal West.
