You will learn essential skills and theory relating to all aspects of sports and exercise, one of the fastest growing industries in the UK, including:

How you'll learn and be assessed

Approximately 60% of your time at college is classroom-based with an active approach to the theory subjects.

The rest of your time will be spent on practical activities in the sports hall or gym, such as fitness coaching or practical sport.

A strong emphasis of the practical sessions is placed on working and learning with others and you are regularly set tasks to complete in partnership with other students.

You also need to be able to work independently and take responsibility for your own learning.

Throughout the course you have the opportunity to demonstrate your skills by participating in community activities and schools partnerships.

You will also have ongoing tutorial support to help you achieve the qualification.

Individual learning targets are set each term and you receive regular feedback on your progress in meeting these targets.

Formal assessment is through assignments projects presentations and practical assessments which are set at regular intervals throughout the course.

The functional skills in English maths or ICT is assessed by an external exam.

You need to have 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including maths and English, or a relevant level 2 Diploma at Merit or above

What Is A BTEC Sport Level 3?

A BTEC Sport Level 3 is a qualification in the United Kingdom offered by the Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC). This qualification is equivalent to A levels and is typically studied by students aged 16 to 19 as further education or vocational training. 

BTEC Level 3 qualifications are awarded as either BTEC Extended Certificates (equivalent to one A-level), BTEC Diplomas (equivalent to two A-levels), or BTEC Extended Diplomas (equivalent to three A-levels).

The qualifications are structured to include both mandatory core units and optional specialist units, allowing for tailored studies.

Assessments in BTEC Level 3 courses are largely coursework-based with an overall grade decided through assignments, projects, practicals and exams.

BTEC Level 3 courses can be taken at colleges or at sixth form. LLS Sixth Form Sports college offers the opportunity to study an Extended BTEC Diploma in Sport which is equivalent to three A levels.

  • 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) including English (Language or Literature), Maths  and  Science, or equivalent.

English and maths

As applicants are required to achieve English and Maths at grade 4 (grade C) prior to entering this course, University College Birmingham will not offer English or Maths alongside the Sport and Exercise Science course.

Supporting documents required

School applicants will be required to provide a good school report, which must include attendance. This will be assessed in conjunction with your qualifications and application during the confirmation of your place at University College Birmingham.

Guaranteed progression

Students who achieve 128 UCAS points from this qualification will be automatically guaranteed an interview for  Physiotherapy BSc (Hons)  at University College Birmingham.

Teaching and assessment

You will be required to prepare work independently and as part of a team. You will be assessed through coursework, assignments, projects, practical observations and presentations, some of which will involve industry-related visits.

To pass this course, you will carry out a wide range of assessment activities and coursework (e.g. written reports, formal presentations, poster design and presentation, leading practical sessions etc.)

How you will be assessed

The external assessments will be either examinations or set tasks which are marked by Pearson. The internally assessed units will be created and set by your teachers and could include such assessment methods as verbal recordings, podcasts, observed practicals, written reports and presentations.

The course runs alongside our sports academies which give you the opportunity to compete at local, regional and national level. We also offer coaching courses, volunteering opportunities and a variety of trips to enhance your learning. These range from visiting the Manchester Velodrome to a warm weather training camp at Club La Santa in Lanzarote.

Progression

The course is ideal preparation for Higher Education and progression into careers in the sport sector. Students who have completed the BTEC Extended Certificate in Sport have gone onto pursue careers in teaching, sports rehabilitation, coaching, fitness and sports development.
