While the career benefits of earning a Ph.D. are undeniable, the process of getting this degree can be quite time-consuming. The 2021 Survey of Earned Doctorates shows that, depending on which major you select, the average time from graduate school entry to a doctoral degree ranges from six years all the way up to 10. Are you in a position to make that kind of commitment?

However, it is possible to complete a doctorate in a shorter period of time. Choosing one of the Ph.D. programs listed below can speed up the process of earning your doctorate. You can save a significant amount of time and money if you choose one of these programs over another.

How To Earn a Ph.D. in Just One Year

By paying attention to the factors listed below, you may be able to reduce the amount of time it takes to earn your Ph.D. by several semesters. Depending on which field you would like to work in, which school you attend, and your academic background, you may have the opportunity to complete your Ph.D. program in a single year.

Choice of major

If you’re a graduate student or getting close to entering a graduate program, then switching majors would only set you back in terms of how long it takes to earn your Ph.D. But if you’re still in high school or working on the general education portion of an undergraduate program, you should be able to change course now without any consequences.

Liberty University’s selection of online Ph.D. programs shows just how much difference your choice of major can make. The length of these programs ranges from 48 credit hours ( Ph.D. in Public Administration ) to 72 credit hours ( Ph.D. in History ). Twelve credit hours is generally considered a full-time semester. Choosing one major over another would immediately reduce the amount of time it takes to earn your Ph.D. by an entire year. Of course, in addition to how long it takes to earn your degree, we recommend considering all of the other relevant factors (potential income, job demand, personal interests, etc.) before deciding on which major to pursue.

Number of credits required

School selection is also important. The Ph.D. program for a particular major at one college may require more credits than it does at another college. You should thoroughly research schools and consult with advisors to ensure that you fully understand the requirements for each program you’re considering.

For example, while the online Ph.D. in Criminal Justice program at Liberty University requires 60 credit hours, an equivalent program at Texas A&M International University only requires 49 credit hours. In this case, choosing one school over another would save you nearly a semester.

Transfer credits

Another reason school selection is important is that each college has its own set of transfer credit policies. Ideally, you’ll be able to transfer as many credits from your previous degree programs as possible. Not all Ph.D. programs accept transfer credits — once you’ve narrowed your choices down to a handful of options, contact each school’s admissions department to see how many credits you may be able to transfer in.

Dissertation

While most Ph.D. programs require dissertations, this isn’t always the case. Researching and writing a dissertation usually takes at least a year, so finding a program that doesn’t require one can save you a tremendous amount of time.

Keep in mind that even non-dissertation Ph.D. programs will likely still have some original research component. This is yet another factor that varies by school. Make sure you understand exactly what will be required of you before you enroll in any particular program.

Program Length: 3-5 years (you must complete 43 units)

This PhD program online is focused on leadership in education and consists of four specific concentration areas that you can focus on:

You do not have to have a background in Education, and you can explain in your graduate school statement of purpose why you have decided to pursue this degree. The DBA at the University of Phoenix takes about three years to complete and has a 54-credit requirement. You can begin working on your dissertation as you as enter the program, while also completing the 18 core courses that will provide a foundation to complete the rest of your degree. You don’t have to choose between the GMAT or GRE as this 1-year PhD program online is one of the few graduate programs that don’t require the GRE . You must have at least a 3.0 GPA for all your graduate level courses, and you must also have a graduate degree from an accredited program in the US. International students on student visas are allowed to apply, but, as an international student, you must also provide English proficiency test scores to gain admission.

Program Length: 2.5-8 years

You’ll have three different tracks to complete your PhD in Psychology from Walden, with the fastest giving you at least 2.5 years to meet the degree requirements. When you complete the nurse practitioner program, you’ll be eligible to take the licensing exam to earn your nursing license to work in all 50 states.

Program Length: 3-6 years

This 1-year PhD program online is another degree program focused on education, as you can choose from two concentrations including Leadership in Higher Education, and Leadership in Educational Administration. You can determine your own program length, but to complete the program you must complete at least 92 credits spread out over a variety of core and required courses, as well as electives and virtual residencies. Program Length: 4-5 years

This 1-year PhD program online is another hybrid course, as part of how to get a PhD you must complete at least three, one-week PhD seminars on campus at the University of South Florida. You can do the rest of the program online and complete the 46 credit requirements in up to five years, although you can complete your program in only three years. You must also take a series of core and required courses in subjects as varied as Introduction to Doctoral Training in Public Health and Transforming Public Health Practice. Program Length: 3-5 years

This 1-year PhD program online is aimed at professionals who have at least five years of experience in the social work, after they have received their master’s in social work. As the program is geared toward professionals, you can choose from two different tracks to complete the program’s 42 credit requirements. You can choose the standard track, which takes three years to complete, or the accelerated track that takes only two years. You can earn your PhD without dissertation in this program, as, in lieu of a thesis or dissertation, you can complete a capstone project aimed at demonstrating your knowledge and capacity in innovative social work practices or leadership.

Doctor of Nursing Practice

Candidates in Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs are planning on pursuing advanced leadership roles in nursing, but with less focus on research. The DNP degree has a more clinical focus, while the PhD in Nursing degree has a strong research emphasis. Thus, DNP degree holders have more hands-on, direct patient interactions that enable them to make an observable impact on their patients. 

Between the DNP degree and the PhD in Nursing degree, the former has a shorter time-to-completion, too. DNP degree programs have 1-4 years time-to-completion, while PhD programs typically require 3-5 years of full-time commitment. Accelerated DNP programs have three years time-to-completion with the assumption of full-time studies, no failing grades, and hitting the milestones on time. 

The DNP degree opens opportunities for jobs as advanced practice registered nurses (APRN), among other leadership positions. The DNP degree is currently considered the minimum educational requirement for entry-level APRNs in many healthcare institutions. Since it’s also a terminal degree, there’s no higher educational level available for aspiring APRNs, too. 

Accredited online DNP programs must cover eight essentials identified by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, namely: 

• Scientific foundation for practice 
• Organizational and systems leadership concerning systems thinking and quality improvement

Occupational therapists perform vital roles in improving the quality of life among patients with illnesses, injuries, and disabilities that prevent them from enjoying everyday activities in a normal manner. Their patients include people with cerebral palsy, autism and Down syndrome, and patients who have physical disabilities caused by illness and injury, such as stroke. 

The minimum educational requirement for occupational therapists is a Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) degree in addition to their license. The OTD degree is a post-professional degree, meaning candidates usually have a master’s degree, a license in occupational therapy, and sufficient work experience. The standard OTD doctorate programs take 3.5 years to complete, but accelerated online programs cut the time to completion in half! For example, Boston University’s OTD program can be completed in 18 months. 

The coursework for post-professional OTD programs includes:

• clinical kinesiology,
• psychology,
• and therapeutic techniques in contemporary practice.

Concentrations are available in some programs, with prime examples being mental health and productive aging. 

There are also PhD in Occupational Therapy or Occupational Science programs, which are research-centric in contrast with the practice-based approach of OTD programs. The PhD programs are more suitable for professionals who want careers in research and academia, which may take up to six years. 

Occupational therapists must also possess soft skills to provide excellent patient care and work well with others. Adaptability, effective communication and interpersonal skills, and patience and compassion are desirable traits.

While there are differences in the curriculum requirements among PhD in Organizational Leadership programs, their candidates develop the right knowledge, skills and mindset vital in their success as leaders. The combination is the result of core, major and elective coursework on the one hand and significant internship, research, and teaching experiences. These experiences are considered among the culminating projects that include an approved, publication-worthy dissertation. 

Most online doctorate programs have 3-5 years time-to-completion depending on the candidate’s enrolment status. But accelerated programs enable students to earn the degree in three years, tops, with the first two years for coursework and the last year for the dissertation. There are even shorter programs, but these can be extremely challenging in course load and other demands. 

A master’s degree in organizational leadership or related discipline, GRE scores, and letters of recommendation are common admission requirements. Many programs also require applicants to present relevant work experience, even research experience, because of the research focus. In-person and virtual interviews are also used to determine an applicant’s suitability for the program of study and its learning outcomes.

Online Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs have a three-year time-to-completion, on average, but full-time students can earn the degree in less time. Accelerated programs can compress the coursework and internship components even more! But students must be aware of the increased demands on their minds and bodies in accelerated programs, starting with full-time engagement. 

DPT curriculum varies between programs, but just the same, students learn the essential knowledge and skills vital for their professional success. Said success starts with passing the licensure exam for physical therapists, but there’s no end to it either, as licensed physical therapists must have a passion for lifelong learning. Physical therapists with sufficient work experience may also pursue board certification in their desired clinical specialty, such as geriatrics, sports or orthopedics. 

Diagnostic imaging, pharmacology, and motor control are among the career-specific courses in DPT programs. Research methods, including statistical analysis, are also discussed in-depth in preparation for a culminating research project, if necessary. Students apply their learning in life sciences and promote research in physical therapy. 

Residency programs are typical experiences among physical therapists after they graduate from DPT programs. These are typically one-year programs that provide residents with additional hands-on training, which comes in handy for specialization. 

During their practice, licensed physical therapists assist people with illnesses or injuries that affect their movement and pain management capacity. Preventive care, treatment and management, and recovery and rehabilitation among patients form a significant part of their healthcare services. Their job also includes interprofessional collaborations with other healthcare professionals, such as doctors and nurses and the family members and caregivers of patients.

Both DSW and PhD in Social Work candidates can choose a concentration if their respective programs offer specializations, such as:

However, note that DSW candidates usually undergo more advanced internships than their PhD counterparts, mainly because of their practice-based focus. 

Candidates can take 4-6 years to complete a standard online program, but there are programs with an accelerated format, meaning candidates earn the degree in three years. The compressed coursework is complemented by the shorter periods between milestones, particularly in the dissertation phase. Both standard and accelerated programs have 45-60 post-master’s credits for candidates to complete. 

Regardless of their differences, both programs enable candidates to further develop their knowledge and skills in making a positive difference in others. Along with deeper insights into social work and its corresponding theories and principles, candidates also learn leadership and advanced research methodologies. The typical courses include:

One-year doctorate programs are rare because very few fields of study lend themselves well to such a short-term period. The more common time-to-completion for the fastest doctorate degrees is 2-3 years, significantly shorter than the 4-8 years average. These programs will demand more of your time, effort, and energy and demand more in terms of academic background, thesis exposure, and work experience than the typical programs. The common formats are: 

• Accelerated programs usually have fast-paced coursework with courses spanning 6-8 weeks and multiple start dates and required full-time enrollment for all terms, including summers. Candidates must meet the scheduled milestones to meet the time-to-completion.

Of course, candidates must also make deliberate decisions and actions that will maximize the potential of their doctorate degrees! Exceptional education-practitioners will engage with an internationally renowned faculty to cultivate and practice curiosity, critical discourse, and perspective taking in a unique and rigorous course of study using the lenses of social justice, systems thinking, appropriate research methods, and empirical inquiry.

Coursework includes the latest research on the social determinants of education; mind, brain, and teaching; entrepreneurship; data and measurement; and technology. The redesigned program allows our doctoral students to customize their program by expanding their choice of electives so that they may focus more deeply on their professional interests that align with their problem of practice. Our online EdD prepares education practitioners to be transformational leaders within their professional settings.

The vision of the Johns Hopkins EdD program is to impact complex educational problems across the globe by preparing education practitioners to think critically and systemically about problems within their professional settings and develop deep understanding and insights to lead positive, sustained change within those settings.Our graduates create new areas of research, promote distribution and utilization of research findings in professional practice, and contribute to wider public discourse and policy.

Based on the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) and Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Advanced Standards in Gifted Education Teacher Training, candidates will develop specialization in leading and evaluating programs and services for students who are creative, advanced, gifted, and twice exceptional. Mind, Brain, and Teaching is designed for educators interested in exploring research from cognitive theories and neurosciences and its potential to inform the education field. This area of interest builds upon basic and applied research from the fields of cognitive science, psychology and brain sciences, neurology, neuroscience, and education. It provides educators with knowledge of how emerging research in the learning sciences can inform teaching and learning. Students gain the knowledge and skills to interpret basic and applied research and apply relevant findings to educational practices and policies. This area of interest is designed to support the development of knowledge, insights, and competencies among students with two different levels of prior knowledge in the learning sciences: those who have had limited formal exposure to the learning sciences, and those who have a master’s degree or master’s certificate in the learning sciences.

A PhD in Psychology is the ultimate degree—a symbol of your commitment to the discipline and a representation of your knowledge and skills. Coursework in a PhD program now frequently integrates discussions on psychology and technology , examining how digital advancements are transforming therapeutic methods and research techniques.

• Research – Research makes up the majority of the work you’ll do as a PhD student. Typically under the guidance of your mentor/dissertation advisor, you’ll delve into a topic of your choosing within the field. Examples of clinical psychology research topics include examining the effects of social media on teen suicide rates or the influence of childhood trauma on adult substance use disorder. Along the way, you’ll refine specific research skills: collecting and analyzing data, working with subjects/participating, and demonstrating your results.

Not only will obtaining relevant experience help strengthen your application package but it will also help you gain invaluable insights into the industry. It might also assist you in choosing a specialization, such as working one-on-one with trauma survivors or dedicating your professional life to neuropsychology research.

Fortunately, there are dozens of ways to get the type of experience that will help your application stand out from the competition: 11

• Research assistantships
• Volunteering at a mental health clinic
• Shadowing a clinical psychologist or substance abuse counselor
• Working for a crisis hotline

Keep in mind that some PhD in Psychology programs require a minimum amount of relevant experience before you can apply. In fact, the Association for Psychological Science (APS) asserts that doctoral applicants usually accrue two to three years of research experience before applying to graduate school. 12 All of this emphasizes the importance of conducting thorough research on your schools of interest.

Letters of recommendation are a crucial component of your doctoral application. In fact, some state that your letters of recommendation are more important to the decision process than grades. 13

Usually, they’re written by former professors and/or former employers or psychology professionals you’ve interned for or shadowed.

Be sure to request letters of recommendation from those with whom you have a visible track record. In addition, request letters well ahead of your application deadline, even as much as a year in advance of when you think you’ll start applying for your doctoral program.

Almost every doctorate in psychology program requires a personal statement. As one of the most critical elements of your application (some indicate that it’s more important than your GRE scores and GPA), it should describe, in detail, your: 14
