PLDT rolls out premium fiber internet

MANILA, Philippines  — PLDT Inc. is gearing up to fully launch this year its fastest fiber internet subscription yet—priced as much as P49,999 per month—for its high-end customers looking to upgrade internet connectivity in the advent of increasing data demand.

On Monday evening, the Pangilinan-led company introduced Gigabit Fiber plans that range from 1 gigabit to 10 gigabits for P7,499 to P49,999 per month.

The 10-gigabit plan is about 29 times more expensive than the 200-Mbps (megabits per second) plan—the cheapest fiber offering—priced at P1,699 per month.

The gigabit plans also include subscriptions to TV streaming platforms and internet security package with cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, among others.

Jeremiah de la Cruz, PLDT senior vice president and head of consumer business, said they have been receiving inquiries for the high-end product offering.

Upper economic class market

These customers—who are usually in the upper economic class—are interested in the fiber plan because they want the fastest internet speed possible, the PLDT official explained.

De la Cruz said the fiber product is useful for households where multiple devices are connected to the internet at a time.

The high-capacity internet product is seen to accommodate a smart home setup where internet-enabled appliances and devices are linked via a network and can be remote-controlled.

“You can see the changing needs in everyone’s households. The number of applications that you need will actually start to increase,” de la Cruz said.

As this develops, de la Cruz said they were also studying the prepaid fiber market to offer cheaper connectivity to users—a move that was already made by its competitors Globe Telecom Inc. and Converge ICT Solutions.

To support its internet services, PLDT has been ramping up its subsea fiber cable projects.

The telco giant activated in 2022 the US-Transpacific Jupiter cable system, a 14,000-kilometer (km) submarine cable network linking Daet, Camarines Norte and Japan.

It also set to complete by next year the 12,000-km Apricot cable system. It provides connections to Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan and Guam.

Converge vs PLDT Home: Fiber Plan Upgrades Compared

The demand for faster internet increases as everyone relies on a stable connection for online classes, businesses, and work-from-home setup. So it’s great that both Converge and PLDT recently out their upgraded fiber plan offers. Both Internet Service Providers (ISPs) now offer plans with up to thrice the speeds compared to their previous plans. But, which ISP has better-upgraded plans? Let’s find out by checking them out side-by-side.

(Note: Plans included here are the Fiber plans that recently got upgraded. Plans with Mesh WiFi devices are not included.)

Both Converge and PLDT Home ‘s plan upgrades are available to new and existing subscribers.

Converge’s FiberX plan starts at PHP 1,500 /month, while PLDT Home’s Unli Fibr plan starts at PHP 1,699 . Both plans come with 50 Mbps (from 35 Mbps).

However, those who avail of the FiberX Plan 1500 have the option to get an add-on—the FiberX Plan 1500 Xtra. Hence, existing FiberX Plan 1500 subscribers could just add PHP 99 to upgrade their Internet speeds from 50 Mbps (previously 35 Mbps) to 60 Mbps (previously 45 Mbps). It is PHP 100 cheaper than PLDT Home’s Unli Fibr Plan 1699, and it got up to 10 Mbps faster speed.

Meanwhile for PHP 2,099, PLDT offers the Unli Fibr Plan 2099 with 100 Mbps (from 50 Mbps). For PHP 99 price difference, Converge has the FiberX Time of Day Plan 2000 (previously Day Plan 1899) with faster speed at 200/100Mbps Day plan (from 70/35 Mbps) and 100/200Mbps Night Plan (from 35/70 Mbps).

If you are eyeing to get a plan with up to 300 Mbps, Converge has a cheaper FiberX 2500, while PLDT Home has Unli Fibr Plan 2699. Both plans previously have up to 100 Mbps.

Furthermore, Converge’s FiberX 3500 gets four times faster speed at 800 Mbps (from 200 Mbps), and it is cheaper compared to PLDT Home’s Unli Fibr Plan 3799 with only up to 600 Mbps (from 200 Mbps). To match the 800 Mbps speed, PLDT Home offers the Unli Fibr Plan 5799. This plan has been upgraded from 600 Mbps.

Which has better-upgraded plans?

Talking about the budget, Converge’s FiberX plans are cheaper than PLDT Home’s Unli Fibr plans.

Nonetheless, it is worth noting that the PLDT Home’s Unli Fibr plans are more expensive as they come with a landline. These plans come with unlimited calls to any PLDT landline. So if you think you need a landline, you may opt for the Unli Fibr plans instead.

Been calling PLDT for 1 week, wala pa ring technical team na dumating to check our line. Ang sabi lang, all we have to do is to wait kasi hindi nila hawak yung technical team nila, and that reason is so fucking lame! One time, sabi pa ng Customer Service Rep na nakausap ko, within the day pupuntahan. Gumabi nlang, wala pa ring Technical Team na dumating! Para tayong mga hampaslupa na ngmamakaawa para ayusin ung line natin to think we are paying for it! PLDT you need to step up otherwise mawawalan kayo ng client!.

Very poor at ang pangit ng service ang Pldt Home Fibr Madalas ang sira ang connection ng internet namin, umaabot ng 2 weeks to 1 month bago maayos at pabalik balik pa yun problems. Problem pa hirap kausap ang pldt puro irereport lang nila sa sub contractor nila at madalas iba iba ang tao pumupunta sa bahay para ma icheck ang pldt line (nakakatakot di ba) at pag tinanong mo pa ano ginawa ng kasama nila e di nila alam at pasa pasa ang trabaho. Magulo ang sistema nila. 4 years na ako naka fibr sa kanila at di na mabilang yun complaint tickets na register sa kanila. Wala sila pakialam kahit sabihin mo urgent kasi kailangan ng bata para sa online schooling nila. Hope nakikinig ang Pldt. Sana Palitan na nila sistema nila

PLDT, improve your services. If you think that your landline is an advantage, well, well, landline and fax are getting obsolete. Why use an expensive long distance call by landline when a household can have video chat on internet anywhere in the world? Why should people use a fax machine when documents can be scanned and sent by email? Kung wale pa ‘yong Converge, hindi pa mag-upgrade and PLDT. What a loser! For a long time the internet service of PLDT has been slow and expensive compared to those in other Asian countries! How can the Philippines compete in the global market, kung sa internet pa lang, people can’t get their message, transactions, etc. fast enough. Our elderly would say, “Walang common sense!”

Mas Matigas ang DCTech ng Davao. Nag speed upgrade sila two days bago mag labas ng promo ang PLDT at Converge! Pero di kasali ang mga old DCTech subscribers. Hahaha! Wawa naman!

Ang tigas talaga ng Globe. Nag speed upgrade na converge at PLDT pero ang Globe wala pa rin

For PLDT, when will this take effect?

It’s already being rolled out. PLDT plans to implement upgrades by November 15.

Of course Converge, kulelat na ang Globe sa Broadband…

Its not apple to apple comparison since PLDT 1699 has a landline incorporated to it

Please include upload speed in your comparison because in our current WFH setup, upload speed is very important as we upload our video feed and documents in cloud storage.
