Postgraduate Research Experience Survey

We’re keen to make sure our postgraduate researchers have the best possible experience while at York. To do this, we need to know what you think works well and what we could do better.

We participate in the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) every two years. This year’s PRES takes place between Monday 6 March and Friday 28 April 2023 . You’ll receive an email inviting you to take part. It’s your chance to tell us about your experience as a postgraduate researcher at York.

Look out for an email from a JISC address [email protected] asking you to complete the survey.

Your feedback is important

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey is the only national survey of postgraduate research students and so is the only way for us to compare how we are doing with other institutions and to make changes that will improve your experience in the future.

The more PGRs that take part the better we can do that.

Please take part

The survey opens on Monday 6 March 2023 and it takes around 15 minutes to complete. Your feedback is confidential to the research team and all reporting will be anonymous.

Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) Results

Student news team

Thank you to everyone who took part in the 2021 Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES). In total 2,186 postgraduate researchers (PGRs), 45% of the PGR community, shared their feedback on a range of issues from supervision and support to progression and assessment.

In spite of a very challenging and difficult year over three quarters of you (76.2%) are satisfied with your postgraduate research experience and 76.8% feel better prepared for your future career. The results indicate that you value your supervisors, as 92% agreed that your supervisor(s) has the skills and subject knowledge to support you. With the move to remote working from March 2020, many services such as the Library moved their provision online and 87.4% of you agree that you have appropriate access to online library resources. Opportunities for developing research skills have also continued with 88.5% of you agreeing that you have developed your skills in research methodologies, tools and techniques.

However, the results also indicate that improvements are needed in a number of areas; mainly in relation to support, community and feedback. Just over half of you (56.2%) agreed that support for health and wellbeing meets your needs and many of you feel isolated.  Only 53.3% of you are aware of opportunities to become involved in the wider community. Many of you feel that concerns are not acted on; as only 53.4% agree that the University values and responds to feedback. Analysing the results in greater deal indicates that PGRs with a disability have a less satisfactory experience across all areas of their programme and this is of great concern.

At a University wide level we will be working with the Disability Advisory and Support Service and student support services to find ways to ensure provision and support meets the needs of all PGRs. We will be working with PGR reps and the PGR Association to find ways to develop our PGR community and to address your concerns.

Schools in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health and the Faculty of Humanities and Departments in the Faculty of Science and Engineering are now analysing their results in detail to identify the areas that you value and the areas that require improvement at your local level. In response to your feedback each School/Department will develop an action plan over the autumn. We encourage you to contact your PGR reps or PGR director for information on how to feed into the development of the action plans.

The overall results are available at the link below along with links to the contacts details of your PGR Reps and PGR Directors. We will share a summary of action plans with you in autumn.

Once again thanks for taking the time to share your experiences and for the detailed comments and suggestions on what works well and what doesn’t. We are committed to improving the postgraduate research experience and look forward to working with you.

Postgraduate Research Experience Survey

Postgraduate research experience survey (pres).

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) is an annual survey offered by the Higher Education Academy (HEA).  Launched in 2007, PRES is a sector-wide survey to gather insight from postgraduate research students about their learning and supervision experience.  The survey involves many other UK higher education institutions, including some of the Russell Group.

Survey questions

The survey includes a core set of questions designed and developed by the HEA as well as opportunities for free text responses. It aims to highlight areas of strength and areas where the University could enhance the postgraduate research student experience. Students are asked to agree or disagree (on a scale of one to five) with statements, or indicate how often a learning style or behaviour is encouraged.  The statements cover the following areas: supervision, resources, research culture, progress and assessment, responsibilities, research skills, professional development, opportunities and overall experience.

PRES runs in the spring term, exact dates are chosen by individual institutions within February - mid May, it must be open for a minimum of 3 weeks.

Students are emailed and invited to participate in the online survey, non-respondents will receive reminder emails and students may opt out of the survey at any time.

Findings from the 2021 Postgraduate Research Experience Survey

Support for mental health and wellbeing is a clear priority for the sector .

A really positive finding in the 2021 PRES report is that a lower proportion of PGRs have considered leaving their programme this year. This year, we asked those PGRs for their reasons for considering leaving their programme, and mental or emotional health problems were the most frequently given reason.

Concerningly, fewer than two thirds of PGRs felt the support for their health and wellbeing met their needs. Those who agreed their institution’s support for their health and wellbeing met their needs were considerably less likely to have considered leaving than those who disagreed. This highlights the need to improve health and wellbeing support for PGRs, as it could be the key to improving overall satisfaction with the postgraduate research experience and helping the sector to see a reduction in those leaving their programmes.

Overall satisfaction has fallen slightly

Although it’s encouraging that there has been a drop in the proportion of PGRs who had considered leaving their postgraduate research degree programme in 2021, unfortunately overall satisfaction across the sector has fallen slightly this year, from 80% in 2020 to 79% in 2021. While 79% still represents a high level of satisfaction with the PGR experience across the sector, it is the lowest score since PRES began, back in 2007.

This fall in overall satisfaction might be a little discouraging, but there are positives. PGRs were asked about their contact with staff in the term when they responded to PRES, and those who said it was a mixture of in-person and virtually/online were the most satisfied overall. A suggestion is that these PGRs have found benefits to a blended approach to contact with staff, such as reduced commuting, while still enjoying the social benefits of some in-person contact. The vast majority of 2021 participants said their contact was mostly or completely virtual, due to the restrictions in place while PRES was in field, but I feel really encouraged by this finding as we look forward, as many institutions will be offering a blended approach of contact between staff, students and researchers during the coming academic year.

PGRs call for more support from supervisors to help them to manage their own professional development

The area of the PGR experience with the largest decrease in satisfaction this year is professional development, and given the uncertainties the pandemic brought to the job market, I was unsurprised to find that professional development was an area of concern. Fewer PGRs felt they were able to develop contacts or manage their own professional development this year, and they would like more support from supervisors, and more tailored careers support for post PhD careers, to enable them to do this.

The Covid-19 pandemic has continued to impact on the postgraduate research experience in 2021

When we consulted with our surveys network in early Autumn last year and decided to add a module of questions on how PGRs felt their institution had responded to the pandemic, we were enjoying a period of relatively few Covid-related restrictions, much as we are now. It was hoped that this new Covid-19 section would offer a chance to reflect on the experiences of 2020 but as we all now know, the winter brought rising case rates, new variants and more restrictions so the new module was in fact very current.

Positively, a large proportion of PGRs (almost 8 in 10) were satisfied with the appropriateness and clarity of communications around Covid-19. That being said, PGRs do comment that they would have liked more information about funding, extensions and access to facilities, to have been communicated.

Given that most PGRs have had to use IT and access resources away from campus this year, it is reassuring that a high proportion (81%) of PGRs have felt supported in doing so. However, a less positive finding is that only two thirds of PGRs agreed that they received the support they needed from their institution during the pandemic, or that their institution had worked to ensure the quality of their academic experience. I’ve found that these two measures are strongly linked with overall satisfaction, so improving support for pandemic-related issues and making PGRs aware of how their institutions are working to ensure the quality of their academic experience could have a positive impact on their overall satisfaction.

Unsurprisingly, the pandemic’s negative impact on PGRs’ confidence to complete their programme within their institution’s expected timescale has been maintained during 2021. Many PGRs have been able to negotiate extensions, however, still have concerns about meeting their new deadlines due to the amount of time lost.

This is your chance to tell the university about your experience as a Postgraduate Researcher here. The survey lets us know what is working well and what's not, helping us make things better. Responses from you help us improve both our current and future support, enabling us to do better for all of our Postgraduate Researchers. Our survey is endorsed by the Guild of Students.

On completion of the survey students will be entered* into a prize draw to win one of 10 Amazon vouchers worth £50 as a thank you for participating

*Students who would prefer not to be entered can let us know by emailing  [email protected] .

You will be sent a personalised link to your student email. Alternatively, you can access  it from the 17th April using  this link .

If you have any queries about anything to do with PRES 2023, please don't hesitate to contact [email protected]

Your feedback is extremely important to us. The results of PRES are used to enhance the services and support offered to our Postgraduate Researchers. We can compare your experience against other Postgraduate Researchers across our university and with other institutions to see how we are doing and where we need to improve. Some areas for improvement will be the responsibility of the Graduate School, some will be individual schools’ responsibilities and some may be institutional wide issues.

PRES will ask you about your experience as a Postgraduate Researcher including your supervision, the resources available, the research culture, arrangements for your progression and assessment, the development of your research skills, your professional development, including careers, your wellbeing and your overall experience at the university.

postgraduate research experience survey

Have your say

The Advance HE Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) is now open

We are keen to make sure our PGRs have the best possible experience while studying with us. To do this, we need to know what you think works well and what as a University we could do better. This is your chance to tell us about your experience as a PGR at Bournemouth University. We also kindly ask that all supervisors encourage their PGRs to participate in the survey.

Thank you to all PGRs who completed the 2023 PRES survey – we listened to you and  your feedback has helped us to enhance your PGR experience in a range of areas.

The survey is now open and will close on Thursday 16 May 2024. Upon completing the survey,  PGRs will automatically entered into a free prize draw. Four winners will be able to claim a £50 shopping voucher. Terms and conditions apply.

In addition, we will be making a £1 donation for every survey completed to the student mental health wellbeing charity,  Student Minds .

Once you have completed the survey, you are entitled to claim a coffee voucher worth £3.20, from the Doctoral College to use at any BU Chartwells outlet. Please come to the Doctoral College (DLG08, Talbot Campus) to collect your voucher. You will need to show a screen shot of the final page of the survey in order to claim your voucher.

How do I take part?

PGRs will receive an email to your student account from the University on Monday 15 April 2024 containing a unique link which will allow you to access and complete the survey. If you can’t find this email, contact  [email protected]  and we’ll help you to get access.

What will I be asked?

The survey will take around 15 minutes to complete. Your response is confidential, and any reporting will be entirely anonymous. The survey is your chance to tell us about your experience as a PGR at BU. It will ask you to share your views on supervision, resources, research community, progress and assessment, skills and professional development and wellbeing.

Why should I take part?

Your feedback is important. The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey is the only national survey of PGRs and so is the only way for us to compare how we are doing with other institutions and to make changes that will improve your experience in the future.

More information

If you would like to know more about the survey, please visit:  PRES 2024.

We hope you take the opportunity to get involved this year and help us make improvements to your experience.

Best wishes,

postgraduate research experience survey

Your voice matters to us.

Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) wants to make sure that our postgraduate research students have the best possible experience while studying with us. To do this, we need to know what you think works well and what we could do to improve your student experienc

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) will be open from 23rd April until 14th May 2024. This is your chance to share your honest opinion of your experience studying at LSTM.

By completing the survey, you will help shape the experiences of current and future postgraduate research students at LSTM.

What is PRES and why does it matter?

PRES is the only national survey of postgraduate research students and so is the only way for us to compare how we are doing with other institutions and to make changes that will improve your experience in the future.

The more students that take part the more information we have to improve what we do in the future.

All eligible participants will receive an email to their  university email account on 23rd April 2024 when the survey opens so please keep a look out for this in your inbox. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Your opinion is incredibly valuable to us and we value the time you take sharing your thoughts.

If you would like to know more information about the survey before it launches then please contact Mia Lindfield, Student Academic Support Officer [email protected]

How will PGR students take part?

The survey will open on Monday 6 February and close on Friday 10 March 2023. To take part in the survey, students will need to follow the individual link sent to them by email by ‘ Postgraduate Student Survey [email protected] ’, as the survey is administered by Jisc .

We use the findings to improve our courses and the learning experience for future students. To see some examples of changes made as a result of student feedback please visit You said, we did!

The survey responses are confidential to the team processing the results and no reporting outside of this team will identify any individual. Any results communicated to teaching staff will be anonymised.
