What is tuition reimbursement?

Traditionally, tuition reimbursement has referred to the practice of a company reimbursing an employee’s educational expenses. That being said, more and more companies also allow employees to access tuition reimbursement funds directly, so that they don’t have to pay out of pocket for their education.

While figures vary from company to company, it’s estimated that employers offer each employee between $5,000 and $7,000 annually in tuition reimbursement. Tuition reimbursement funds can be applied to undergraduate or graduate degrees. Full-time salaried employees are eligible to receive up to $5,000 annually. Full-time and part-time employees are eligible to receive between $1,500 and $3,000 annually. Regardless of employment status, the program will only reimburse up to 50 percent of tuition.

An Oft-Overlooked Resource

It’s important to bear in mind that the companies discussed above are just examples.

More than 83 percent of large employers offer at least some form of tuition reimbursement to their employees, and yet many employees have no idea that such benefits exist, or that they may be eligible to receive the funding. If you are unsure whether or not your employer offers tuition reimbursement, you should consult your employee handbook or speak to a member of your human resources team to determine what is available to you.

If your employer does not offer tuition reimbursement and you are considering making a job switch, it’s worth keeping tuition reimbursement in mind as you evaluate potential employers.

Jobs in Applied Psychology

If you're majoring in psychology then you've probably been advised to get a graduate degree. Why? For many jobs in psychology, having a master's degree or doctorate in psychology is a requirement.

Because in most cases, a graduate degree in psychology can open the door to a much wider range of career opportunities and higher pay.

So, how can students determine which graduate program is right for them? What career options might be best? Because of the huge range of degree options and specialty areas, picking the one that is right for you can feel overwhelming. Spending some time researching different career paths can help you decide which career path is suited to your needs, interests, and educational background.

At a Glance

The first step is to begin by asking yourself some important questions. How long are you willing to go to school? Where do you envision yourself working? What areas of psychology interest you the most? Some of the most common areas of employment include mental health, education, business, and government.

Jobs in Mental Health and Social Services

If your ultimate goal is to work directly with people to help them overcome mental illness, then a specialty area focused on mental health and social services would be a good option for you.

While there are some entry-level positions in this field for those with a master's degree in psychology , those holding a PhD  or PsyD  will find more plentiful job opportunities.

Some job titles in this area include:

Clinical Psychologists

Clinical psychologists assess, diagnose, and treat individuals experiencing mental or emotional health issues. Most individuals in this area hold a PhD or PsyD, but some jobs are available for those with a master's degree in psychology.

Clinical psychologists often work in hospitals, counseling centers, schools, health clinics, or private practice. They often treat people experiencing a range of mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Counselors have many of the same job duties as clinical psychologists but tend to work more on helping individuals overcome issues affecting their daily lives rather than psychiatric illness.

Educational requirements can vary, but counselors must have a minimum of a master's degree in psychology, counseling, or education. To become licensed in your state, you will also need to complete a specified number of supervised clinical hours and pass a licensing exam.

Counselors may have different titles depending on their degree and licensure. Some common ones include licensed professional counselor (LPC), licensed mental health counselor (LMHC), and licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC).

Social Workers

Social workers often diagnose and treat mental illness or work for social welfare agencies. Those with an undergraduate degree in psychology may elect to obtain a master's degree in social work.

Masters-level social work graduates can become licensed to practice in all 50 states.

Jobs in Educational and School Settings

In addition to social services, those with a graduate degree in psychology are also qualified to work in research or educational settings. Colleges and universities employ doctorate-level (and occasionally masters-level) graduates to fill faculty positions.

Professors are generally expected to teach undergraduate- and graduate-level students and conduct research.

School Counselors

School counselors work with children who are having difficulty at home or school and assist students in making academic choices. Many also provide help with college applications and career choices.

School counselors hold a minimum of a master's degree in school counseling from an accredited program. They must also complete an internship and pass licensing examples.

School Psychologists

School psychologists assess, diagnose, and treat children experiencing behavioral, emotional, or academic problems. These individuals may also recommend treatments or work with parents, teachers, and others to help children overcome problems and achieve goals.

All states have differing requirements, but most require a minimum of a master's degree in school psychology. To become licensed, you must also complete a supervised internship and pass licensing exams.

Educational Psychologists

Educational psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with schools, teaching psychology, educational issues, and student concerns. Educational psychologists often study how students learn or work directly with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to improve student outcomes.

To become an educational psychologist, you will need at least a master's degree, although many states do require you to have a doctorate degree to practice as a licensed psychologist.

Jobs in Local, State, and Federal Government

Government and business entities often hire masters and doctoral graduates in psychology to conduct research. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, local and state governments frequently hire psychologists for jobs in correctional facilities, mental health clinics, public hospitals, and social service offices.

  • Rehabilitation counselor
  • Social service manager
  • Parole officer
  • Vocational rehabilitation provider
  • Psychosocial specialist

Applied psychologists utilize their knowledge of psychology and research methods to improve people's lives and solve real-world problems. Individuals working in these fields may start with a master's degree in psychology, but positions tend to be more plentiful with a doctorate degree.

Industrial-Organizational Psychologists

Industrial-organizational psychologists study workplace behavior and ergonomics, often working to increase productivity or efficiency. The rising demand for skilled psychologists has led to an increase in the number of university programs offering degrees in industrial-organizational psychology.

I-O psychologists perform a variety of functions, including hiring qualified employees, conducting tests, designing products, creating training courses, and performing research on different aspects of the workplace.

I-O psychologists generally need to have a minimum of a master's degree, although opportunities and pay are better with a doctorate degree in psychology.

Forensic Psychologists

Forensic psychology involves applying psychology to the field of criminal investigation and law. Forensic psychologists typically have a master's in forensic psychology at the minimum, but many hold a PhD in clinical or counseling psychology.

Forensic psychologists may work in various settings, including family courts, drug courts, criminal courts, or private consulting.

Human Factors Psychologists

Human factors is an area of psychology that focuses on a range of different topics, including ergonomics, workplace safety, human error, product design, human capability, and human-computer interaction.

Human factors psychologists explore the ways that people interact with products and environments. They also help design interfaces that are easy to understand to maximize productivity and safety.

What This Means For You

Career options with a graduate degree in psychology are highly diverse. The best way to determine what path is right for you is to evaluate your own needs and interests . There are jobs with a master's degree in psychology, including in areas such as mental health and school counseling. For many profession, a doctorate degree in psychology opens up more jobs and opportunities for advancement.

The first critical and fundamental step in considering graduate study is to understand why you want to pursue a graduate degree. To set the stage for careful decision making, it is important to clarify your reasons for pursuing a graduate degree, your goals for study and research, and the realities of your intended career path. As you begin to think about this, consider the following questions:

What are your  motivations ?

What are your  goals , what are your  expectations .

For a more in-depth exploration of these questions, see our  Applying to Graduate School Guide .   In this booklet, you will also learn about:

  • Timing of Application and Enrollment
  • Master’s Degree (e.g. M.A., M.S., M.P.P., M.P.H., M.F.A., Ed.M.)
  • Professional Degree (e.g. J.D., M.B.A., M.D.)
  • Doctoral Degree (e.g. Ph.D., Ed.D., D.F.A.)

Meet with an advisor to discuss your graduate school questions. GSAS advisors work with Harvard College undergraduates and graduate students enrolled in GSAS master’s programs on advanced degree applications. Harvard College undergraduates who are interested in applying for PhD programs should first meet with one of our undergraduate advisors who will then refer the student to a GSAS advisor.

Savvy tips that make earning an advanced degree—and advancing your career—possible

Eric Moraniec

We asked Eric Moraniec , director of graduate student financial assistance and programs at Sacred Heart University, for insights on how prospective students can finance their graduate school degree programs.

Find the true cost of your program.

The cost of a graduate degree program is not always easy to determine. Some institutions list the price per credit with three-credit courses, meaning the credit fee must be multiplied. Be sure to consider the indirect costs, too, including books and updated laptops, transportation and lunch on the go.

Knowing the bottom line will help you make sound decisions.

Consider financial assistance through the federal government and your degree institution.

One of the myths of graduate school is that there is no financial assistance available to attain advanced degrees. This is not true. In addition to payment plans through your chosen institutions that allow you to pay over time, you can file a free application for federal student aid (FAFSA) for federal direct loans and veterans benefits and a separate Sacred Heart University graduate financial aid application, Moraniec said.

Moraniec suggests that most students borrow federal student loans before seeking private loans and compare private lenders to ensure getting the lowest interest rate.

Research institutional financial assistance.

Depending on your degree field, you may find fellowships and scholarships available to fund your education. In addition, certain groups are eligible for tuition discounts available for seeking higher education. At SHU, for example, first responders in the tri-state area may receive a 50% tuition discount on the master of public administration program .

Know your graduate school loans and benefits.

Federal direct loans are unsubsidized, interest accrues while you are enrolled and there are no payments due while you are enrolled at least half-time. Graduate/professional students can receive up to $20,500 with this loan program.

Federal Direct Grad Plus loans require documentation before they will appear on a student’s billing. The student must file a Plus application for credit approval and electronically sign a promissory note and complete a SHU Plus Loan Certification to authorize the loan amount at Sacred Heart, Moraniec said.

Veterans education benefits come in many different types, including the GI Bill, vocational rehabilitation and survivors and dependents educational assistance.

Be sure you fully understand each program's nuances to create the best package for your situation.

Search for graduate assistant positions.

Working in a lab, mentoring undergraduates as a residence hall director or gaining skills in an office situation—graduate students can often secure campus positions that apply to their subject area or research. Most come with regular stipends, and some include tuition benefits, course credit or housing and meal waivers. Such jobs also offer a chance to gain experience and skills that can be listed on your résumé.

Look for scholarship and fellowship opportunities everywhere.

Grad school funding can come from the most unlikely sources. Moraniec suggests researching town, county and state funding, as well as scholarships specific to the student’s degree program, ancestry, gender and more. Potential sources include local businesses, civic clubs, church and religious groups, employers, professional organizations, unions and special interest groups.

Borrow only what you need.

Moraniec advises students to borrow for the entire year and, if possible, to pay interest in school—even if that is not required by the lender.

Think you’re ready to dive into a graduate degree program at Sacred Heart University?

SHU’s diverse graduate, doctoral and certificate programs offer students the flexibility they need to complete their coursework through a variety of options, including online lessons, evening and weekend classes and asynchronous learning opportunities, to name a few.

Because in 2024, it isn’t just about “work-life” balance. It’s about work-life-study balance.
