It’s not as difficult as you might think to bring a sophisticated narrative structure to a eulogy. Select one major characteristic of your loved one and tie in a few different stories or memories related to that characteristic. Did your brother love to cook? Start off with a funny story of how your brother almost set the kitchen on fire as a young child.

Then, talk about how he became a good cook and would even help you prepare meals to impress dates and let you take all the credit. Then list some of his accolades as a renowned chef. A theme allows you to weave humor into your eulogy. It also allows you to list the deceased’s accomplishments. This simple rhetorical tool is a very effective way to organize the points you want to make.     

No piece of writing is perfect on the first pass. Take your time and know that you may have to go through a few rewrites before you feel confident delivering your eulogy. It’s okay if it’s not perfect right away. In fact, it’s okay if it’s never perfect. It’s more important that it’s from the heart. 

Part of the editing process should involve reading your eulogy out loud. This will help you get a feel for the rhythm and cadence of the eulogy. Words often feel different when you say them out loud versus reading them in your head. This will help you make sure there aren’t places where you stumble.

Get input from people — it’s always an integral part of the writing process. Select a few trusted people to give you feedback, preferably people who knew the deceased. They should be able to help you fine-tune any details you might be missing.   

Don’t worry about trying to memorize your eulogy. No one will mind if you need to refer to notes or a printed speech. Delivering a eulogy while you’re grieving puts you under emotional strain.

Mariah Carey says her mom and sister died on the same day

Mariah Carey is sharing news of two recent losses in her family.

"My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," the Grammy-winning singer said in a statement shared with USA TODAY Monday. "I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed."

"I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time," she continued.

A cause of death was not shared. People was first to report the news.

Carey has previously opened up about her complicated relationships with family members in her 2020 memoir , "The Meaning of Mariah Carey."

Carey was estranged from her father, Alfred Roy Carey, who died of cancer in 2002 at age 72. She grew up with her mother Patricia Carey and siblings Morgan and Alison.

Morgan proved a destructive force both in her childhood and adulthood, Mariah Carey wrote in her memoir. "When my brother was around, it was not uncommon for holes to be punched in walls or for other objects to go flying," she wrote. 

Carey also said her emotionally distant mother was unable to care for her the way she needed and sister Alison once threw boiling tea on her. However, the "All I Want for Christmas is You" songstress also dedicated the book in part to her mom, writing: "And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always."

Last year, Carey's longtime relationship with Bryan Tanaka came to an end after almost 10 years. Earlier this year, she launched her third Las Vegas residency , "Mariah Carey: The Celebration of Mimi Live in Las Vegas," which began in April and has performances scheduled through February 2025.

Carey will also embark on Mariah Carey's Christmas Time tour this winter to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her enduring holiday album "Merry Christmas."

I come from a close family where everyone is successfully paired up except for my twin brother “Paul.” Last year, Paul finally got out of his toxic on-and-off relationship after his ex took a hammer to his car.

But now Paul has been dating desperately, picking unhinged girlfriends, and dumping them on us during family gatherings. I spent my grandmother’s birthday being held hostage in conversation by one who was convinced that she was psychic. One tried to sell us essential oils. There was also the Trumper who wanted to be a tradwife (we are firmly Democrats). The last one picked a fight over Palestine with our Jewish sister in front of her kids.

Everyone is sick to death of this pattern and has collectively elected me to be the one who has to have the come-to-Jesus conversation with my brother. I love Paul and have been urging him to seek a counselor for years. He is convinced he just hasn’t found “the One.” My brother is good-looking, funny, and has a great job. He would be a catch by any measure but seems to only catch these type of women. Where do I even begin? Or at least, how do I get him to stop bringing them to family events? My wife’s birthday is coming up and I think she might kill me if more drama is dumped on us.

The answer to, “Where do I even begin?” is: You don’t begin! Paul has a right to date people who everyone hates, to his heart’s content. Now you and the rest of the family can decide how you interact with these people, whether that’s saying, “No thanks” to essential oils, announcing, “I won’t be engaging in any political debates,” or making a rule that anyone who has destroyed personal property with hammers is not welcome back in your homes. Perhaps family members who are organizing or hosting major holidays or events celebrations could discourage everyone from inviting guests, using an excuse about space or budget. Dear Prudence, My husband and I are gay. We live in a deeply red state and can’t afford to leave. I am the stay-at-home parent for our 6-month-old son. My sister-in-law is in the process of getting a divorce and had to start a new job after being a stay-at-home mom. She has a 4-year-old daughter, “Lia.” I started watching Lia, and shortly after, she started saying I would do awful things to her like I pinched her or hit her if I changed her clothes or stepped on her toes if I picked her up. She throws tantrums saying that I’m not her dad and am kidnapping her. This has happened in public more than once. Every time it happens, I have an anxiety attack and worry that someone will take it too seriously or too far. This is a gun-friendly place. It has gotten to a point where I can’t run errands while watching Lia. I don’t want to be out in public with her. My sister-in-law refuses to take this seriously and my husband accused me of being paranoid because I wanted to put cameras in our house. Lia continues to do this no matter how much I correct her. I am this close to telling my sister-in-law to find other child care but I think it might blow up my marriage. I feel trapped. Can you help? —Panicking

My daughter went to live with her father full time when she was 13. I just couldn’t compete with all the spoiling and non parenting that he did. I work two jobs and got little in the way of child support. My daughter is 23 now and knows this. She just doesn’t care.

The only time she wants to talk to me is when she runs out of money to fund her fancy influencer lifestyle. I have begged her to see a counselor and go back to school. She doesn’t want to. She wants to live an affluent life living off the men she dates. This isn’t the adult I wanted her to be. This isn’t the girl I raised. I lost her along the way and am afraid I will never see her again. Every time she calls we fall into the same toxic cycle. She says the most vicious things to me if she doesn’t get her way—tells me she hates me, I am so ugly I embarrass her, no wonder her father divorced me.

After seeing a counselor, I started to stand up for myself and tell my daughter that I love her but until she learns to treat me with respect or else I don’t want to hear from her. It has been six months since I have spoken to her. The peace and lack of stress make me want to weep. I have since moved and started a new job. People ask me about myself. I don’t know what to say. Bringing up my daughter just feels like scratching old wounds bloody again. What do I say to them?

Dear Daughter Gone Not Dead,

The part of your questions about workplace smalltalk is easy: You can identify something else to share about yourself, even if it means making that thing a slightly bigger deal than it actually is to you. The idea is just to give your colleagues something to discuss to get through the elevator ride, your first lunch together, or those moments when you’re waiting for everyone to log onto Zoom.

I actually think this is good advice for anyone working in corporate environments where there is an expectation that you’ll connect with your co-workers, but who doesn’t actually want to put all their business out there. You have to simply decide on a thing that will be what you offer to colleagues as chit-chat fodder. That could be that you have a dog who you dress up in different outfits, you go hiking every weekend, you are really into Disney, you travel for every Taylor Swift concert around the world, or that you are obsessed with baking. Take your pick. Everyone will latch onto it. By making this the subject people ask you about to fill any awkward silences, you’re giving them the gift of having something to say other than, “Sooo have any good weekend plans?” and you’re also protecting yourself from more probing questions about the topics they’ll default to if they can’t think of anything else. Family is, of course, often at the top of that list. In fact, if you can get ahead of it and mention your recent triathlon or your birdwatching club before anyone says, “Do you have kids?” you might never have to touch the topic at all.

The underlying—and totally heartbreaking—situation with your daughter is obviously a lot more complicated. I don’t want to add to the pain by bringing this up, but I wonder if there is anything you can think of that you may legitimately need to apologize for about the way you raised her from birth to 13. You say she chose to live with her father because he was more lenient and could provide more material things, and that could very well be the whole story. But it is pretty unusual for a young girl to so eagerly end her relationship with her mother, so I am curious about whether there’s was anything else going on that might be fueling her extreme anger toward you. Again, I wasn’t there and I don’t know what happened, but is it possible that there was something about your parenting that, with the gift of hindsight, you regret or now understand could have been hurtful to her? If there is, a sincere apology—issued separately from any complaints about her behavior or how she has related to you as an adult—and a request for forgiveness could go a long way.

Alternatively, have you thought about whether your daughter might have an undiagnosed mental health issue? She sounds extremely volatile. You’re clearly not going to be the right person to force her into therapy (or, for that matter, to go back to school or date different men!) but exploring this possibility through your own research might help you to come up with a theory that explains the way she relates to you in a way that feels less personal.

My sister-in-law recently visited us twice in a two week period, going and coming from an event. We live half way from her event. She took an expensive ceramic brush without asking and refused to fess up. She used my bathroom and I moved some of my things to another bathroom. The brush was left in the bathroom she used. We are older women and have known each other for 30-plus yrs. Should I just let it go and forget it since my husband says she will never apologize… I don’t know how to handle this.

What are you thinking of doing as an alternative to letting this go? Taking her to small claims court? Even if you were to do that, you’d need better evidence that she actually stole the brush. Let some time pass and see if it pops up under the sink or in the laundry basket or some other corner of the house—she might have really moved it without realizing it or stashed it somewhere weird without thinking. And even if you don’t find it, unless you have security camera footage of her sneaking it into her purse (but seriously why would she do this?) I think it’s best to file this under the “It’s a mystery” category and try to assume the best of this woman you’ve known for three decades. A relationship of that length is not worth throwing away over a hair tool—even a very pricey one.

I live with my fiancée and her two kids: a 12-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy. I have a 15-year-old daughter who lives with us half of the time. She recently started modeling and is making good money. The lion’s share goes into a trust for her college but the leftovers leave her with more spending money than most teens. She buys expensive purses, designer clothes, and has a gaming laptop that makes me drool. Still, she saves up for each item and is a straight-A student—I can’t complain.

My fiancée’s kids do. They are either whining about my daughter not letting them play games on the laptop or hounding their mom to buy them more expensive stuff because it isn’t “fair.” It is a huge source of conflict and I don’t like the solution my fiancée came up with. Either my daughter is forced to give up the items she bought herself to the kids or not bring them over at all. We agreed we let each other parent their own kids.

I put a lock on my daughter’s room after one of the kids went in and took the laptop without asking. My daughter immediately found out and it was a huge fight. She threatened to just go live with her mom full-time. My fiancée is unhappy with me over this. I think she needs to work on boundaries with her kids and actually go to court to get her ex to cough up the child support he owes. The kids actually got along before this. Your daughter should get to keep her own stuff! Perhaps you and your fiancée could give the younger children some jobs to do, so they can make a little of their own money. I have to say that it struck me as a bit odd that purses and expensive clothes would attract the attention and envy of pre-pubescent kids. So if this really is just about the gaming laptop, maybe a reasonable rule would be that anything that could be considered a toy or entertainment should be left at her other home, shared according to agreed-upon rules, or used only in the privacy of her room.

More broadly, blending families is tough and this conflict should serve as a huge warning that you and your fiancée are not on the same page about how you’re going to manage it. If family counseling isn’t an option, maybe there’s some form of church-based premarital counseling, an online course, or even a book that could guide the two of you through the process of understanding each other’s values and coming up with some agreements about how you’ll manage things after the wedding. And if you can’t see eye to eye on how to treat each other’s children, that’s one of the best reasons I can think of that the wedding should not happen—at least until you do.

My father left when I was 3-years-old and didn’t visit or speak to me until I was almost 18. Since then, I’ve only seen him a handful of times. Currently, I’m 27 and keep in contact with him mostly because I want to stay in the lives of my two younger half-sisters. Lately, however, I’ve noticed that he has a habit of lying to his family about his role in my life.

At first, I brushed it off, but it’s getting more egregious. The last time I went to visit, for example, he mentioned at the dinner table that he had partial custody of me, which is not true. If you really wanted a relationship with your dad—or if you had any indication that he was willing to do the work to have a relationship with you—I would urge you to have a conversation with him about how it affects you when he says things about his role in your childhood that aren’t true. And if you didn’t really need a relationship with him in order to have access to your sisters, I’d suggest a snarky, “Wow, it’s weird that you were there because I never saw you!” or “We’ll have to look back at the pictures because I’m pretty sure my cousin took me to the father-daughter dance!”

But I don’t want you to get yourself cut off over someone who has never been all that important to you. So I prescribe a silent, internal eye-roll (and maybe some mental notes to share with your therapist about how disappointing he is). And when your sisters are a little older, you should definitely tell them the full story. I’m sure they’ll have plenty of their own stories to share about their dad’s loose relationship with the truth.

Brooklyn Rivera began her career as a dancer and pageant competitor, but she paused this career to pursue an education degree at the University of Southern Florida. 

According to Lubbock Avalanche Journal , it was during those years of studying that Brooklyn met her husband-to-be, Eddie. 

The duo have since been married 10 years after tying the knot back in 2014.

Eddie Rivera is a US Veteran

In terms of career, Eddie Rivera is an established US Veteran having served time in the Marine Corps. 

Eddie revealed on Instagram that he graduated as part of the Charlie Co. Platoon 1065 in 1995. As a veteran, he served at Fort McClellan before moving to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in 1997.

Eddie paid tribute to his 30-year-long commitment to the military service on his Instagram:

"30 years ago this October, me and this hard-charger met at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. We graduated Charlie Co. Platoon 1065 on January 13, 1995. That was the last time I saw Bryan E. Gee until a couple of days ago!"

Now 49, Eddie is still involved in veteran affairs, attending and sharing insight into events such as Military Appreciation Night and Memorial Day . 

Eddie and Brooklyn Have Three Children Together

Eddie is also a devoted family man and is currently raising three children with his wife. 

The couple are parents to 13-year-old Rhema, 8-year-old Kameron, and 6-year-old Maverick. Additionally, Eddie is also a father to an adult son named Kage from a previous marriage, who is now following in his father's footsteps as a US Marine. 

It's clear from Eddie's social media presence that he is a doting father, often posting about his children with pride. Recently, while his wife was absent and competing on Big Brother , Eddie ensured to maintain a family tradition and posted photos of his children on their first day back to school.

Eddie and Brooklyn Appeared on Dr. Phil Together

While Brooklyn competed in the Big Brother house solo, she and her husband did make a joint appearance on another major television show together - Dr. Phil.

In 2019, the couple appeared on the psychologist's show to discuss a disturbing incident that occurred when a hacker gained access to their smart home devices. The incident evolved into aggressive cyberstalking with threats made on Brooklyn's life.  

During the episode, Brooklyn described it as "the scariest day of my life" with Eddie concurred saying he felt "very powerless" . 

The couple received some resolution to their case after the identity of the hacker was revealed by Dr. Phil during the episode.

Mariah Carey’s mother and sister died on the same day. The singer says her ‘heart is broken’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mariah Carey’s mother Patricia and sister Alison both died on the same day, the singer said Monday.

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the Grammy-winning singer said in a statement.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” the statement continued. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

The Times Union reported Monday that Alison, who was largely estranged from Carey, died at 63 from complications with her organ function and that she had been in hospice care.

People Magazine first reported the news of their deaths and Carey’s statement.

Patricia was a Juilliard-trained opera singer who Carey credits as an inspiration to her from a young age.

“I would sing little tunes around the house, to my mother’s delight. And she always encouraged me,” she wrote in her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.”

Patricia was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey, the singer’s father. The parents divorced when the “Vision of Love” singer was 3. Carey grew up in Suffolk County on Long Island and lived primarily with her mother after her parents’ divorce. Her father died of cancer in 2002 at age 72.

Carey detailed her complicated relationship with her mother and her sister in her memoir, in which she wrote that she and her mother often clashed, causing her to feel “so much pain and confusion,” and accused her sister of putting her in unsafe situations as a child.

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions,” Carey wrote in the book. “Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”

Carey maintained contact with her mother and even recorded a duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus” for the singer’s second Christmas album in 2010.

Rahaman Ali

No one was closer to Muhammad Ali than Rahaman, his only sibling and best friend. The brothers lived together, trained together and shared pivotal experiences, from Ali's time in the Nation of Islam to the 'Rumble in the Jungle' fight against George Foreman. Rahaman (often misspelled as Rahman) became Ali's best sparring partner and part of his inner circle, also acting as a personal bodyguard throughout his brother's career. Rahaman retired from competing as a heavyweight himself in 1972, with a record of 14 wins, three losses and one draw.

Who Is My Brother?

Nearly 6,000 years ago, a man asked the question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” Of course, we know that Cain was answering God’s question with a question, meant to evade answering. But that single question still bears considerable consideration in this world of sin.

Do I have a responsibility for my neighbor? My family? Even strangers? The world tells us that we should just look out for number one because nobody else is going to look out for you. And, in a world of sin, the world is right. Selfish to our deepest parts, without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, it is impossible for us to love or care for anyone above ourselves.

But Christ came to this world and lived a life of love, compassion, and service. He took to Himself anyone who was willing to surrender to His love. It didn’t matter what color they were, where they were born, who their ancestors were, or what language they spoke. It didn’t matter what they did for work, what religion they espoused, nor how sinful their lives might have been.

Christ came to save mankind, meaning the entire human race—every man, woman, and child. And the life He lived is an example to us, as Christians, those who strive to be Christlike, to assume mankind as our brother.

Then Christ went one step further and died to guarantee that anyone who would accept Him as their Saviour—would turn from their sins and surrender their hearts and lives to Him—might become just like Him.

Who is my brother? All for whom Christ died, and that doesn’t leave out anyone, for any reason.

Love and compassion for our fellow human beings is expressed in many ways. The Bible tells us to defend the weak, fatherless, and widow (Psalms 82:3; 149:9). We are to come to the aid of those in need and poverty; to protect those in danger of persecution, violence, and suffering (Matthew 25:35–40). We are to love the stranger, because we were once strangers in a land of sin (Deuteronomy 10:19). It tells us that even our enemy is our brother (Matthew 5:43–48).

We cannot help our brother if we do not show him Jesus Christ. This world is sick to death with sin and Jesus is the only cure. Whatever we do to help others, must ultimately lead them to Him.

Our brother is everyone who has an ear to hear, who needs to know that there is a Saviour waiting for them to come to Him. By God’s grace, it is our privilege to tell and show them what He has already done for us. We are to love and respect all for whom Jesus gave His life. We are to sacrifice ourselves for them.

One day all of God’s children will stand on the sea of glass. There will be no “You will live in that part of the holy city because …” or ”I will be living over here because …” All will be united in love to God and each other. Nothing else will matter.
