The establishment will provide a "complete, high-quality" evening experience for those searching for something that is rapidly becoming popular among Atlanta diners. The Watertower will be located in a newly renovated facility designed by the architectural firm of Richard Rauh & Associates, Atlanta, GA.

The facility will be divided equally between the cafe/restaurant function and the coffeehouse/entertainment function. The restaurant will feature dining room seating for approximately 100 patrons and flexible indoor/outdoor patio seating for an additional 40 patrons. The cafe/coffeehouse will provide a full-service dine-in and carry-out coffee-based beverages, as well as a dessert bar. The coffeehouse/cafe portion of the business will also contain a full-service bar, a small entertainment stage, and niche magazines and newspapers available for purchase. The coffeehouse will maintain ample indoor/outdoor seating under a covered patio space shared with the restaurant.

The facility’s perimeter will feature a simple garden and bocci courts which will provide comfortable waiting areas during the warm weather months.

Finally, an historic 200+ foot watertower forms the centerpiece of the grounds immediately adjacent to the proposed business. This watertower, constructed in 1906, features extraordinary cathedral-like interior space. It is our hope that our construction plans will support dramatic lighting of the tower after sundown, creating a rather visible nighttime landmark for northeast Atlanta.

The Watertower logo is protected by federal trademark laws. All of our menu creations will not necessarily have the same protections, however, when possible, popular "trade-names" will be protected. The business of The Watertower is not dependent upon process technology or patentable inventions.

David N. Patton IV – Owner and General Manager:  Mr. Patton worked for 6 years as the Dean of Students for Emory University School of Law. While working at Emory, he was responsible for special event planning and catering, particularly related to student centered events. Mr. Patton is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Historic District Development Corporation, an organization devoted to the redevelopment of the properties and neighborhood surrounding Atlanta’s Martin Luther King National Historic Site and Preservation District. He is also a member of the Advisory Board for the Atlanta Executive Network, a 1,000+ member business organization in Atlanta, and the past Chairman of the Board of Directors for Fulton County Court Appointed Special Advocates. Prior to his position at Emory, Mr. Patton worked as an attorney for a Cincinnati, Ohio-based law where he specialized in litigation and small business development. Mr. Patton received his law degree from the University of Georgia in 1991 and his undergraduate degree from Emory University in 1988. Mr. Patton put himself through college working in a casual dining establishment in the Virginia Highland neighborhood in the late 1980s.

Cristina Brito – Manager:  Ms. Brito, currently a food and beverage supervisor for the Westin Atlanta North hotel, received her start in the hotel and restaurant business in Recife-PE/ Brazil. Butchers’ plans to build farm shop and café on outskirts of Silsden refused due to Green Belt policy

A butchers’ plans to build a farm shop and café on the outskirts of Silsden have been refused after councillors were told the business would go against Green Belt policy.

Councillors said they supported the local business’ plans to expand, but argued they couldn’t rip up national planning policy because they’d like to have an afternoon tea in a new farm shop.

Last year long-standing Silsden butcher Isherwood’s applied for planning permission to build a new farm shop and café next to the golf driving range on Keighley Road.

Isherwood’s is currently based in a small unit in the town centre. The business said it wanted to expand, but argued there were no buildings Silsden available for such an expansion.

Although the site is currently a car parking area, it does lie within the Green Belt. Bradford Council received 908 letters of support for the application, and 32 objections.

But when the plans came before the council’s Keighley and Shipley Planning Panel on Wednesday, planning officers had recommended the development be refused.

They argued the development would go against two major planning policies – preventing development in the Green Belt and discouraging business to open in out of town locations – which planners say would draw people out of Silsden town centre.

They also raised concerns about the increased traffic turning onto and out of the site on a busy road.

Jo Steele, representing the applicants, said the company had been looking for larger premises in the town for decades, but no free units were available.

Silsden Town Councillor Adrian Naylor spoke in support of the plans, arguing there were “special circumstances” that should allow the plans to go ahead.

He said hundreds of homes had been built or were due to be built in Silsden in the coming years.

Unless businesses were supported, Silsden risked becoming a “dormitory town” – he argued.

Councillor Chris Herd said: “I can’t help but feeling we’d miss an opportunity if we didn’t support this. We represent the people, and there has been a lot of support for this. It is the opportunity to improve a gravel car park. Someone is wanting to invest and create jobs.”

Chair of the Committee Coun Sinead Engel said: “This site is in the Green Belt – I don’t think we can get past that. It is a waste of time arguing over highways issues when there is still the main reason for refusal – that this is in the Green Belt.

“We might say this business would sound like it’s a lovely place to do some shopping or have an afternoon tea and look out at the view, but the reason we have Green Belt policy is to protect these views and sites for future generations.”

Coun Nazam Azam said: “This is an excellent plan, but it is in the wrong place. I don’t want to come across as anti-business, but getting over the Green Belt issue is too much.”

Coun Andrew Loy asked what special circumstances could lead to building on Green Belt being approved. He pointed out that dozens of homes had been given approval for Green Belt outside Ilkley.

Mrs Fillingham said housing need was one of the few reasons development could be approved in Green Belt.

Coun Hurd added: “Someone is going to invest a lot of money and create jobs. I think planning needs to consider that a bit more.”

Every member of the committee except Coun Hurd voted to refuse the application.

After the meeting Keighley and Ilkley MP Robbie Moore slammed the decision, despite the fact his fellow Conservative Coun Loy was among those who voted for refusal.

He said: “Time and time again, Bradford Council have chosen to ignore widespread local opposition and push ahead with the barrage of new housing developments they have unleashed on Silsden – putting our town’s infrastructure at risk.

“Yet now, when it comes to an application from a local small business for a farm shop which would have created jobs and boosted the local economy, they reject it – even after the Isherwood’s received huge widespread local support for their plans. It’s hypocritical, non sensical and anti-business.

“Bradford Council should be supporting local business growth, especially for key infrastructure projects such as local shops and services – not refusing them.”

The exterior of Cafe Selmarie in Lincoln Square

After four decades sitting in the heart of Lincoln Square, Cafe Selmarie will close its doors and make way for another local business that hopes to provide the same sense of community.

Willow Cafe & Bistro will replace Cafe Selmarie, which will close at the end of April. Birgit Kobayashi, the retiring owner of Cafe Selmarie, spent months going over offers with her daughter before landing on Andrew Pillman, founder of Neighborhood Taprooms, which has locations in Lakeview, Uptown and Lincoln Square.

“Cafe Selmarie is a beloved part of Lincoln Square’s culture and history, so we feel honored to have the opportunity to carry on its tradition of great food and hospitality while creating our own unique restaurant,” Pillman said in a statement. "Once we begin operating as Willow Cafe & Bistro, we’re hoping to retain some of the same sense of community. We’re looking forward to what’s ahead!”

Pillman took over German tavern Huettenbar in 2021 for Lincoln Square Taproom, marking his second Lincoln Square takeover. According to Eater Chicago, Pillman has applied for a liquor license under the new business name.

The assets and lease were transferred to Pillman in a deal brokered by Eatz Associates. The space, commercial kitchen equipment and restaurant furnishings were all included as part of the deal. The Cafe Selmarie name and recipes were not included, according to the company.

Established in 1983, Cafe Selmarie was founded by Kobayashi and her neighbor Jeanne Uzdawinis, who combined their middle names Selma and Marie to create Selmarie's. The cafe was home to the first espresso machine in the neighborhood and took pride in being a Giddings Plaza staple in which local art was displayed and employees often shared recipes that were added to the cafe's menu.
