Homework Planner Apps for Students

1. student planner- homework agenda & notes.

The first app on the list is a simple homework and notes management app. It keeps track of homework, assignments, projects, and to-do lists. The layout is minimal, all the tasks are neatly organized with a colored bookmark for easy identification. You can mark a task complete and remove it from the pending list.

Courses can be added easily and color-coded as well. The calendar shows any upcoming deadlines so you can prioritize accordingly. The tasks have a progress bar that you can adjust as you make progress which enables you to get a quick summary without actually opening every task.

You can also break your assignments in small chunks as subtasks that would make finishing a task much easier and the progress bar will fill automatically. It also allows you to attach media files to your assignments or projects for easy access to the important information in one place.

homework planner apps- agenda

  • Progress bar
  • Deadline Reminders
  • Calendar View
  • No option to sync data to the cloud

Student Planner is a great app for all the students, it has all the necessary features like Deadline reminders, subtasks, progress bar, color-coded tasks, and courses. It can significantly increase your productivity when used regularly. You can get this app for free in the Play Store.

2. Student Planner

Student Planner is another fast and simple homework management app which is wrapped by a beautiful and intuitive material designed UI. What Student Planner adds to the table is the inclusion of a schedule or time table which you can use to either store your class schedule or it might even be a study schedule for your exams.

You first start by adding your subject and the schedule then you can add an assignment or set a reminder. The due assignments are arranged as separate cards and can be swiped away once done with.

homework planner apps- Student Planner Android

  •  Simple and easy to get started with
  •  Fast and small in size
  •  Beautiful Minimal UI
  •  Option for Schedule
  • No sync/backup
  • Timetable implementation not perfect

I would recommend this app to anyone who is looking for a simple homework management app with timetable support and a minimal UI.

Install Student Planner ( Android )

Egenda is simple. Open the app, add all the classes or subjects to the app, and once that is set up, you have the option of adding a new Homework, Quiz, Project, or Test and choose the respective subject deadlines. The app also arranges the due work in cards that can be swiped away when done. But what I love the most about this app is that the fact it allows you to go subject-wise and view all your upcoming tests, projects, or pending assignments which is a huge convenience for planning your schedule ahead of time instead of the previous day.

Unfortunately, the app doesn’t have a timetable option, but in its latest update, it added a  Calendar View  where you can see your whole month at a glance with your assignments, tests, and projects.

homework planner apps- Egenda Android

  •  Subject-wise sorting
  •  Calendar View
  • No timetable support

Egenda provides some great tools for Homework and Test planning and I am sure anyone would find them extremely convenient and useful. But keeping its single con in mind, go for this app if you are not too keen on having a schedule or timetable.

Install  Egenda  ( Android  |  iOS )

4. ChalkBoard

The next app on our list is ChalkBoard, which I found out to be a pretty smart homework planner app. Chalkboard strikes a perfect balance between simplicity and features.

Although the setup process is a little longer than the previous three apps, as you have to feed meticulous details about the classes, teacher, and schedule. It is worth the effort.

On the home screen, you are shown upcoming classes, events tab, and upcoming tests. ChalkBoard fetches the dates for every subject from the Timetable for your future classes. Little features like these make the app stand out from the rest and give an overall great experience. You can also view classes and assignments subject wise.

homework planner apps- ChalkBoard Android

  • Proper Timetable
  • Ability to add teachers for subjects
  • View tomorrow’s classes as well as assignments/tests/quizzes
  • Smart features
  • Little longer to set up
  • No calendar view

If you are looking for a homework planner as well as a school planner, Chalkboard is the app as it strikes a great ground with almost all the features one might need while not being too bulky.

Install ChalkBoard ( Android )

5. School Planner

School Planner is a full-fledged planning application designed for students to manage their career as a student. Along with your homework and timetables, School Planner offers you to keep track of your grades and attendance, add contacts for teachers, add recorded lectures, and even multiple planners.

The app supports backing up of all your data via Google Drive, Calendar View along with a weekly report, attaching snapshots to your assignment reminders, student accounts from ClassViva, and a lot more. In spite of so many features, the app doesn’t feel slow at all and delivers a powerful performance with its beautiful design.

homework planner apps- School Planner Android

  • Full-fledged student companion
  • Feature-packed and free
  • Supports sync and backup
  • Widget Support
  • Tedious setup procedure
  • Big in size
  • Complex, not so smooth learning curve

While it is not for someone who is looking for a fast and easy way into homework management, School Planner is a great student companion app and serious students will surely get the most out of hit.

Install School Planner ( Android )

6. My Study Life

My Study Life comes with its own web app and syncs with the Android app, essentially making your data accessible from any device as long as it has a browser.

It implements a goal-centric circular tracker that shows your progress. The Calendar view combines your timetable, deadlines, and shows all your classes and assignments, projects in a single place.

The gist is this: when you’re ready to focus, you plant a tree seed. Then as you work, your tree begins to grow. If you can work all the way until it grows into a big, strong tree, hurray! If you check your phone to see Facebook or Instagram, your tree dies. It’s a great way to help you undo the constant phone-checking habit we’ve all succumbed to.

Hello Christian, This is certainly a great list of productivity tools for University students. I’m currently studying for my master’s degree and finding a tool that helps me in note-taking was extremely important. I have never been an Evernote fan, but rather searched for apps with features like Zettelkasten or second brain. I recommend to try out Hypernotes, one of the recent knowledge management note-taking apps on the market, as an alternative.

Regards, Jess

When I was a student, I used kanbantool.com to manage my projects. It helped me a lot, especially that I studied two faculties at once, so there was quite a lot of tasks to deal with. In fact, I still use the app, to manage my work… that’s how good it is!

Hey Sasha, thanks for writing in! Yeah, I love kanban systems, just checked out the kanban tool you mentioned, it seems a bit like Trello, is that right? I love Trello and Asana for organizing projects, definitely a must-have app for college students, job seekers (you can organize your job hunt), and everyone else!

What are the benefits of a student assignment planner?

A student assignment planner is a routine or a guide that students create in order to better organize and communicate.

Students use these planners more likely to keep track of their assignments, set personal goals for students, and enhance communication between students, teachers, and parents. The four effective ways student planners can enhance learning are as follows:

Improves Organization

The organization doesn’t come fluently to utmost scholars. It requires constant effort and a great deal of planning; qualities that some pupils need.

Students frequently get frazzled and confused with having to keep up and plan for their numerous classes, assignments, test dates, and so forth. Due to lack of association, scholars’ work or grades frequently suffer.

Assignment planners give an easy and creative system of taking note of their commitments and deadlines. It gives them a systematized approach to recording the necessary information on a day-to-day basis.

These are also related over the course of time, enabling students to prepare and be ready with their class necessities and activities.

Tracks Achievements

Student planners allow them to keep track of their objectives. They can make use of the planner to write down their to-do lists and targets.

As they achieve goals throughout the week, they’re suitable to construct momentum and get inspired to work harder. Ambition setting is a great skill to learn for school as well as in life after it.

Enhances Students’ Responsibilities

Having a planner gives the students the freedom to plan, organize and keep track of their work to the best of their capacities and necessities.

This has a binary benefit in that it increases the student’s responsibility to the commitments as well as provides them with a strategy that contributes to their success. Using these planners, students are suitable to take full responsibility and accountability to complete their work.

Promotes communication  .

There’s always a chance for miscommunication to take place when conveying information to parents through students.

The Use of planners helps to overcome this challenge as it serves as an excellent line of communication between scholars, parents, and educators.

Planners can have a separate section allowing school teacher-parent communication. educators can write regarding pupil performance, dates for school activities, or about academy programs, while parents can use the space to interrogate the pupil or inform the schoolteacher about any problem faced by the student.

Using student assignment planners can help scholars stay on track and succeed to the best of their capability.

I’m a tutor myself. My schedule has just gotten too busy. I would appreciate some advice on how to prepare my lesson plan before class.

' src=

Hello Supriya,

The learning objectives for the lesson must be determined before you can begin to plan it. In contrast to what the learner will be exposed to during instruction, a learning aim explains what the learner will know or be able to do following the learning experience.

Estimate how much time you will spend on each learning activity as you plan them.

Finding out if your students are learning is made possible through assessment planning. Students have the chance to demonstrate and practice the knowledge and abilities outlined in the learning objectives through assessments (such as examinations, papers, problem sets, and performances), and instructors have the chance to give specific comments that can direct further learning.

After a lesson, there is an opportunity to reinforce what the students have learned. Instructors and students can both benefit from lesson closure. Hope you find this useful.

Could you please assist me in providing some tips on how to meet multiple deadlines? Thanks in advance.

Hello Manohar,

Here are some helpful hints for juggling many deadlines without becoming exhausted: Make sure you can actually see your workload, whether you write it down on a whiteboard or enter it into an app. You can use this to plan your timetable and break up the work at hand into more manageable chunks.

Organize your time by deciding what is urgent versus what is important, and then decide which projects will demand the most of your time, effort, and resources.

Try dividing up large projects into little chores if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the number of deadlines on your calendar. In this manner, you’ll remain on track to achieve your deadline and feel more driven to complete the task. I hope these suggestions prove useful.

I work as a teacher. How can assignments be given to students in the best way possible without putting them under pressure?

Hello Rajmohini,

When giving out assignments, teachers need to be especially careful. Students may tune out and refuse to complete their assignments if it is too difficult, or takes too long. Students’ homework assignments ought to build on what they have learned in class. Consider these suggestions on how to assign homework to make sure it is clear and appropriate:

1. Establish a regular homework schedule at the start of the school year, 2. Give the students tasks they can complete, 3. Give homework in small clusters, 4. The assignment should be written on the chalkboard and left there until it is due, 5. Periodically remind pupils of due dates, 6. Work together with other educators to avoid a glut of assignments.

That means you don't need to download a Pomodoro timer app for such. But if you do, here are the best Pomodoro timer apps .

This app rewards you with earnings in the form of imaginary cash as you complete tasks. You don't actually receive any of these earnings in real life, but it's a good incentive to keep you moving forward.

Best student planner app—Screenshot of Calendly's website with a peak into the calendar view

Calendly is a global, omni-channel scheduling app for individuals and teams. Over 10 million people use it, including companies like Google and eBay.

Students can connect Calendly with other apps and calendars, such as Google Calendar and Microsoft 365. It’s particularly helpful for students involved in frequent group projects, as they can use Calendly to toggle invitations and availability in one place.

The free version is more than enough for a college student , but you can really pump up automation with the premium paid version.

While Calendly might be one of the best calendar apps for students, it feels more suitable for professional teams and business owners. The downside — you don’t get as many of the task planning features offered on other apps on our list. Entrepreneurs might need Calendly’s easy collaborative scheduling for clients, but some students wouldn’t need that feature.

  • Features:  Routing forms, workflows, team scheduling, availability preferences
  • Best for: Frequent meetings and group work
  • OS: Desktop, Android, and iOS
  • Basic: Free
  • Essentials: $8/month
  • Professional: $12/month
  • Teams: $16/month

Todoist screenshot showing daily list views for events

There’s something so satisfying about crossing things off a list. The online version of that would be Todoist, a to-do list planning app.

Students can organize their calendar events, projects, and homework in multiple visualizations, like calendar view and Kanban boards. We also love how you can prioritize tasks with highlights.

Todoist isn’t just a place to organize lists.  You can track time for study sessions and view productivity insights to improve your study flows. The app has an impressive 8.9/10 rating on TrustRadius with minimal bad reviews.

The only downside we could think of is that the free version might not be able to manage everything on a student’s plate.

  • Features:  Quick task and subtask adds, recurring tasks, prioritization, notifications, tags, filters
  • Best for: Time tracking and task categories
  • OS: Desktop, Android, iOS
  • Starters: Free
  • Pro: $4/month
  • Business: $6/month

3. myHomework Student Planner App

myHomework app website home page

Don’t be fooled by the basic website. Established in 2009, myHomework Student Planner App has a strong reputation among students and teachers. The app has a 4.5/5-star rating on Apple, with almost 4,000 reviews.

The interface is simple and intuitive , with a calendar view for all your homework and tests that you can filter by teacher or theme. Each task comes with an automatic reminder should you need it, so there’s no need to create separate ones for each task.

Some students lament the app’s lack of integration features with Google Calendar and other apps, though most reviews state the app gets the job done.

Another downside is the free version’s ads, which can get annoying.

  • Features:  Homework widgets, project and task tracking, device syncing
  • Best for: Syncing multiple devices
  • OS: Desktop, Windows, iPad, macOS, Android
  • Premium: $4.99/month

4. Power Planner

Power Planner app views

Power Planner has one of the most visually appealing mobile layouts out of all the apps on our list. The intuitive layout, complementary and customizable colors, and convenient agenda view make it easy to stay on top of all your tasks. We think this is the best planner app for students free of charge — the complimentary version has everything you need.

And if you’re a super planner and predictor? This app has a motivating “what if?” feature that shows you the grades you need to get to reach certain GPAs.  You’ll also enjoy automatic reminders, regular updates, and ultimate organization with Power Planner.

P.S. The app has an impressive 4.6/5 average rating on the Google App Store.

  • Features:  “What if” GPA scenarios, calendar and agenda views, automatic reminders
  • Best for:  Predicting grades
  • Premium: $1.99/month

5. Easy Study

Study insights from Easy Study app

Need help finding the motivation to study? Easy Study is a great way to get in the zone.

All you need to do is add your subjects, plan your study time for each one, and boom — the app creates a tailored, customizable plan for you. The most satisfying part is checking off different tasks for each study session.

The daily statistics are also a serious plus. You can view how much time you dedicated to each subject as a percentage-based circular chart and even add overall goals.

One downside we noticed is the frequent customer complaints about bugs. However, it looks like the company does its due diligence with frequent updates.

  • Features:  Notifications, study history insights, subject categories, goals
  • Best for:  Automatic study plans
  • OS:  Android, iOS
  • Basic : Free
  • Plus Monthly : $2.99
  • Plus Semiannually : $14.99
  • Plus Annually : $26.99

6. Evernote

Evernote home page screenshot

Evernote is a fantastic note-taking app. It’s not as popular for scheduling and calendar management, but hey — a large part of college planning happens within your courses, too.

Evernote helps you plan your notes through efficient templates, to-do lists, web clippings, and more.  Unfortunately, many users complain that the free version leaves much to be desired, with limited devices and a lack of reminders or due dates.

The good news? Students can access either a 50% discount on a one-year Personal subscription plan, including due dates, large storage capabilities, extensive search functions, Google Calendar syncs, and more.

If you’re feeling really fancy and collaborative, splurge on the Teams version (or ask a family member to gift it to you).

We think this is the best student planner app for managing multiple aspects of life — categories like professional and personal goals, vacation planning, and even pets complement your academic plans quite nicely.

  • Features:  Reminders, due dates, integrations, note-taking , web clipping, to-do lists
  • Best for:  Managing notes
  • OS:  Windows, macOS, iPhone, Android
  • Evernote Free: $0
  • Evernote Personal: $14.99/month
  • Evernote Professional: $17.99/month
  • Evernote Teams: $24.99/user/month

7. iStudiez Pro

Screenshot of iStudiez Pro home page

iStudiez Pro is a versatile planner app that helps you see homework, exams, assignments, and course schedules in one clear view. Easy, checkable boxes for tasks are categorized by course — the half-picture views let you manage tasks while still seeing your schedule for the day.

Students love the user-friendly interface for most devices, though some complain the iPhone views aren’t as clear as on the iPad.

You can also track grades for every assignment and task , allowing you to easily keep track of your GPA as you go through the semester.

  • Features:  Alarms, syncing, integrations, calendar, grades, bird’s eye schedule views, GPA tracking
  • Best for:  Managing homework tasks
  • OS:  Windows, macOS, iOS, Android
  • Premium: $2.99/month for mobile
  • Desktop versions: $9.99/month

Tips for making the most of student planner apps.

There are a few differences between a regular app and the best student planner app for college students — but the most important isn’t the type  of app. It’s how you use it.

Here are some tips to help you maximize organization and efficiency from student planner apps:

1. Plan Out Your Week

Saturday, Sunday, or Monday are all great days to plan your week. Take some time to plug in all of your week’s courses, classes, tasks, projects, and commitments. This should save you the hassle of adding things ad hoc and forgetting important due dates. You might also consider plugging in grades for different assignments if you’re working with an app that tracks your GPA.

2. Sort, Sort, Sort

Most of the apps on our list have categorization, tagging, and sorting features. Take time to categorize every task to search for related items easily.

3. Customize Your Layout and Colors

Who says planning has to be dull? Have fun with your student planner apps by customizing colors, fonts, and layouts.

Are you strictly a calendar-type organizer? Great, leave the app on the calendar view.

Are you more of a visual organizer? Perhaps a Kanban board is more your style!

Being a student isn’t easy, but modern technology offers a helping hand. We’ve given you a comprehensive list of the best student planner apps on the market. This should provide more opportunities for students to embrace remote learning while providing fantastic support for managing school-life balance.

Many student planner apps are free, though they might have premium paid versions with more features. A free student planner app usually has enough features to manage your calendar adequately.

2. What is the Best Student Planner App?

Many students love Power Planner and Todoist, but it’s all subjective. The best student planner app depends on your specific needs and preferences.

You might prefer a super user-friendly, visually appealing app with graph insights on time management. Or, you might be satisfied with a simple calendar view organizing your schedule.

3. Is Google Calendar Good for Students?

Certainly, Google Calendar is a great student planning app due to its widespread familiarity. You’re probably already somewhat versed in Google Calendar if you use Gmail. Moreover, the app is easy to use, allowing you to create new projects or events from your iPhone, Android, or computer with a few easy taps. Ratings and Reviews

Good application.

I’ve been using this application for a bit now, and I think that this is legitimately a great app which I have come to appreciate. The simplistic UI blows me away, and it almost seems as if this is a stock iOS app when looking at the style. Its just that in some places the app can be hard to use, and the UI looks a bit clunky, for instance the Add Course page. Overall a great app though.

Developer Response ,

Thank you so much for your review! We are working to fix these bugs very soon.

I can't figure out how to add a period

I can't figure out how to add a class to a certain period, so it's only letting me add one class, and I can't find out how to do it

Pretty useful app for students.

The Siri support in the app is super useful for my son along with other features to keep up with school assignments I’ve been following this app since the beta release and I think it’s an awesome free app for students to manage their assignments. Keep up the great work!

We know that homework can be a real drag. It’s time-consuming, and can be difficult to complete all on your own. So, what can you do if you’re struggling?

You might try looking online or in the app store! If you’ve already looked around you probably know that there are tons of homework sites for students and homework apps out there that all say they can help you improve your grades and pass your classes. But, can you trust them? And what are the best apps for homework help?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help apps–free and paid . We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help apps
  • The cost of homework help apps
  • The five best apps for homework help
  • The pros and cons of using apps that help you with homework
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using apps that help you with homework
  • Tips for getting the most out of homework sites for students

So let’s jump in!

The Basics About Apps that Help You With Homework–Free and Paid

The bottom line is, homework sites and homework apps are intended to help you complete your take-home assignments successfully. They provide assistance that ranges from answering questions you submit through a portal all the way to one-on-one tutoring, depending on the help you need!

The big plus for both homework help apps and websites is that they usually offer help on-demand. So if you can’t make it to after school tutoring, or if you're studying late into the night (it happens!), you can still access the help you need!

If you’re specifically looking for an answer to the question: “what is the best homework help website ?,” you can check out our article on those here! [LINK COMING SOON]

What’s the Difference Between a Homework Help Website and an App?

So if they’re both designed to give you a little boost with your take-home assignments, what makes homework apps and websites different from one another? First off, homework help websites are optimized to be used on a desktop, while apps are designed to be run natively on mobile devices. So depending on which devices you have access to, you may decide to use a website instead of an app…or vice versa!

The other big difference between homework help apps and websites is that they sometimes offer different features. For instance, with the Photomath app, you’ll be able to submit photos of math problems instead of having to type everything out, which is easier to do by using an app on your phone.

If you’re trying to decide whether to go with a website or app, the good news is that you may not have to. Some homework help websites also have companion apps, so you can have the best of both worlds!

What Makes a Homework Help App Worth Using

Apps that help you with homework should ideally help you actually learn the material you’re struggling with, and/or help you turn in your work on time. Most of the best apps for homework help allow you to ask questions and provide answers and explanations almost immediately. And like we mentioned earlier, many of these apps let you send a picture of a question or problem instead of writing it all out.

But homework help apps offer more than just quick answers and explanations for your assignment questions. They also offer things like educational videos, lectures, tutorials, practice tests and quizzes, math solving tools, proofreading services, and even Q&A with experts.

And the best part is, most offer these services 24/7!

What You Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of apps willing to prey on desperate students. Before you download any apps (and especially before you pay to sign up for any services), read reviews of the app to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

Keep in mind: the more a company advertises help that seems like cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. Actual subject matter experts aren’t likely to work with those companies. Remember, the best apps for homework help are going to help you learn the concepts needed to successfully complete your homework on your own.

If you’re not sure if an app is legitimate, you can also check to see if the app has an honor code about using their services ethically , like this one from Brainly. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” in more detail a little later!)

How Expensive Are Apps That Help You With Homework?

A word to the wise: just because a homework help app costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. And, just because a homework help app is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best apps, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

Most of the apps out there allow you to download them for free, and provide at least some free services–such as a couple of free questions and answers. Additional services or subscriptions are then charged as in-app purchases. When it comes to in-app purchases and subscriptions for homework help, the prices vary depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to around $60 dollars per month, with the most expensive app subscriptions including some tutoring (which is usually only available through homework help websites.)

The 5 Best Apps for Homework Help

Okay, now that you’re up to speed on what these apps are and how they can help you, we’ll run you through the best five apps you can use.

Keep in mind that even though we recommend all of these apps, they tend to excel at different things. We’ve broken these apps into categories so that you can pick the best one for your needs!

Best Free Homework Help App: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

While there are lots of free homework help apps out there, this is our favorite because it actually supports learning, rather than just providing answers. The Khan Academy app works like the website, and offers the same services. It’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your educational needs.

After you download the app, you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help apps, including several AP classes.

Best Paid Homework Help App: Brainly

  • Price: $18 for a 6 month subscription, $24 for a year
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

Brainly is free to download and allows you to type in questions (or snap a pic) and get answers and explanations from both fellow students and teachers. Plus, subject matter experts and moderators verify answers daily, so you know you’re getting quality solutions! The downside is that you’re limited to two free answers per question and have to watch ads for more if you don’t pay for a subscription.

That said, their subscription fees average around only $2 per month, making this a particularly affordable option if you’re looking for homework help on a budget. Brainly subscriptions not only cover unlimited answers and explanations on a wide variety of school subjects (including Art and World Languages which aren’t always included in other apps), they also provide tutoring in Math and Physics!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best App for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or up to $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This app allows you to take a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath subscription services also include animated videos that break down mathematical concepts–all the way up to advanced Calculus!--to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic textbook solution service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools, access to one-on-one tutoring, and additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Best App for STEM and English Homework Help: Studypool

  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit
  • Best for: Science and English homework help in one app

When it comes to apps for science and English homework help, there aren’t lots of great resources out there, much less out there all in one place. While Grammarly is a good service for proofreading, SparkNotes has some decent summaries, and Khan Academy covers science, the best of the bunch if you need help with both subjects Studypool. Instead of using lots of different apps for STEM and English help, they’re combined together here! But while Studypool has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

The Studypool Q&A model is a little different than other homework help apps. After you create a free account, you ask questions, and tutors submit bids to answer them. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access thousands of notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! It’s also not clear how they choose their tutors, so you’ll need to be careful when you decide who you’d like to answer your homework questions. That said, if you only need a few questions answered per month, this could be cheaper than other monthly subscription services.

Best Homework Scheduling App: MyStudyLife

  • Best for: Keeping track of your schedule and deadlines

If the reason you’re looking for homework help is less about finding answers to questions and more about needing assistance with organization and time-management , MyStudyLife is a great option. This is a cross-platform planner that allows you to store your class schedule, upcoming tests, and homework assignments in the cloud so you can access it all wherever you are, and on any device.

One of the unique things about it is that it easily works for daily or weekly rotating class schedules that can get confusing, helping you keep track of when you need to finish your homework based on your changing schedule. You can get reminders for upcoming classes and assignments as well as past-due homework and any revisions you may need to do. It can even let you know when you need to start studying for a big test!

Best of all, you can actually schedule assignments and study sessions for multiple nights, and specify how much of the task you got done each night. That way you’ll know how much additional time you’ll need to spend!

body-magic-wand-cc0

While homework apps might seem like magic, it's important to weigh the pros and cons before you commit to one.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Apps?

Homework help apps can be useful tools if you’re struggling in any of your classes. But there are a few problems you might run into if you don’t use them ethically and responsibly.

Below we’ll cover some of the good and the not-so-good parts of using homework help apps to complete your take-home assignments.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Apps

Let’s start with the pros of using apps for homework help.

Pro 1: All-Around Better Grades

This is undeniably the main pro and the reason apps that help you with homework are so popular with students. Not only can you potentially get better grades on individual assignments, because they help you learn tricky concepts, you can also earn better grades overall .

Just keep in mind that if you want better grades you have to actually learn the material you’re studying, not just find easy answers. So be sure to use apps that provide good explanations . That way you’ll have the mental tools you need to succeed on your class exams and on standardized tests for college.

Pro 2: Flexibility

It’s hard to beat homework help that you can access anywhere you are from your mobile device. You can also get assistance whenever you need it since the best apps offer their services 24/7. This is especially useful for students who need to study during hours when their free school resources aren’t available because of extracurriculars, jobs, or family obligations.

If you need convenient and flexible homework help or tutoring services to fit your schedule, apps can be your go-to resource.

Pro 3: Individualized Learning

Sometimes the kind of learner you are doesn’t match your teacher’s style of teaching. Or maybe the pace of a class is a little too fast or too slow for your tastes. Homework apps can help by allowing you to learn at your own speed and in ways that support your own learning style.

You can use their features, such as educational videos, 24/7 conversations with experts and peers, and tutorials to review concepts you may have forgotten. These apps can also let you dive deeper into topics or subjects you enjoy! With homework help apps, you get to choose what you need to learn and how you learn it.

body-red-x-false-stop

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Apps

Next, let’s look at the cons of homework help apps.

Con 1: Questionable Info

Unfortunately there are lots of less-than-reliable homework help apps out there. They might not hire actual experts in their fields to provide answers and create study tools, or they rely on user-submitted answers that they don’t verify. In those cases, you might not be getting the accurate, thorough, and up-to-date answers you need to really learn.

In addition to the possibility of running into plain-old wrong answers, even the best apps sometimes just won’t have a specific answer you need. This could be because you’re enrolled in an advanced class the app doesn’t really cover or because of the algorithm or chatbot a particular app uses.

If that’s the case , your best bet will likely be to talk to your teacher or a free tutor (if your school provides them) to get help answering your question.

Con 2: Information Overload

While having tons of information at your fingertips can be helpful, the sheer amount and variety of videos, tutorials, expert answers, and resources a homework app provides can be overwhelming . It’s also easy to get sucked into a research rabbit-hole where you learn new things but don’t actually get your work done. This is especially true for students who tend to be easily distracted.

Additionally, you may be learning to do things differently than you’ve learned them in class , which could cause problems. For example, if your math teacher asks you to solve a problem one way, but you learned to do it differently through an app, you could get confused come test time!

Con 3: Cutting Corners

There are a lot of apps out there that bill themselves as “the best app for cheating.” They allow users to type in a question or take a picture, then instantly provide an answer without any explanation of the material. Many of these are scams or provide unreliable answers, but not all. Some apps are legitimate and provide quick and easy answers that could allow you to do your whole homework assignment in minutes.

The problem is that even though taking shortcuts on homework to save time is tempting, it can keep you from really learning. The point of practicing concepts and skills is so you develop them and can access them whenever you need to. This is especially true if skills build on one another, like in a math or English class.

Sometimes s truggling with an assignment or question, trying, failing, then trying again until you succeed can help you learn difficult material. If you don’t let yourself really try, and instead take too many shortcuts, you may end up behind.

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

When it comes to using homework help apps, sometimes the difference between “help” and “cheating” is really clear. For example, if you’re using an app to get answers while you’re taking a test, that’s definitely cheating . But what if you’re struggling with a math problem and need to know the correct answer so you can work backwards to learn the process? Is that “cheating” or is it “help?”

The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” If you’re not sure, you can always check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if you’re relying on an app to do all of the work for you, there’s a good chance using it might constitute cheating.

Think of it this way: say you’re studying for an upcoming math test, and are stumped by a few of the questions on the study guide. Even though you’ve tried and tried, you can’t seem to get the right answer because you can’t remember the steps to take. Using an app to explain the steps as you’re studying is “help.” Using the app to get answers so you can make a good homework grade is “cheating.”

The same is true for other subjects: brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also “help,” provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or learning to produce your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help App for You

If you’re serious about using a homework help app, our expert tips can help you pick one that’s right for you and your budget!

#1: Decide What Tools You Need to Succeed

While most apps offer Q&A services, the best apps provide study tools to help you learn the material you need to learn .

For instance, if you’re a visual learner, you might need an app that provides lots of videos. If you learn best by reading, an app that provides lots of in-depth written resources might be better for you. Or, if you learn best by actually doing things, look for an app that provides practice tests and quizzes, along with explanations for correct and incorrect answers.

Before committing to an app, take a quick survey of the tools they offer users to make sure they meet your unique learning needs.

#2: Decide Which Subjects You Need to Study

Not all homework apps are created equal. One might provide tutoring in math and science, but no proofreading services to help you with writing. Another might be perfect for American History, but what you really need help with is your Spanish class. So, before you can decide which app is best for you, make sure to create a list of the subjects you need the most help in.

#3: Do Your Research

As we’ve said before, there are tons of homework apps in the app store to choose from, and the most important thing you can do is research what they offer students. Services, prices for those services, and subjects that the apps cover all vary, so it’s important that you look into your options. We’ve compiled our all-around favorite (and reliable) apps here, but it’s still a good idea to do your own research to find out what might meet your individual needs best.

body-five-star-best-number-one

#4: Learn Why People Like and Dislike the App

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “buyer beware?” It means that the person buying something should check for quality before actually handing over their money. This applies to both free and paid homework apps, but especially those that actually cost money.

Before you download anything, be sure to read the user reviews . While all apps will have both positive and negative reviews, you want to look for one that has more positive than negative. And if you’re considering paying for a service, be sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

#5: Budget Yourself

If you find a paid app that provides the learning tools you need, covers the subjects you need to study, and that has good reviews overall, set a budget to pay for it before you hit that “install” button. The costs for paid homework apps vary, and especially if you’re using one that requires you to pay for individual questions or services, the prices can add up quickly. So make sure there’s money for it in your budget before you commit!

7 Apps That Can Do Your Homework Much Faster Than You

7 Apps That Will Do Your Homework For You

In the field of educational technology, some apps might be getting too smart.

More and more apps are delivering on-demand homework help to students, who can easily re-purpose the learning tools to obtain not just assistance, but also answers. Whether or not that’s cheating—and how to stop it—is one of the concerns surrounding a new app that can solve math equations with the snap of a camera . While the software has inspired teachers to create real-world homework problems that can’t be automatically solved , that strategy doesn’t hold up to other apps that tap into real-life brains for solutions.

Here’s a look at 7 apps that can do your homework for you, and what they have to say about cheating:

Price : Free Availability : iOS, Android app coming in early 2015

The new, seemingly magic app allows users to take pictures of typed equations, and then outputs a step-by-step solution. As of Wednesday, the app is the number one free app on the App Store. But the biggest issue, one teacher argues , isn’t if students will use the app to cheat, because many will. Rather, it’s about how teachers will adapt. A PhotoMath spokeswoman said educators have welcomed the app with positive reviews, but the software remains “quite controversial.”

“We didn’t develop PhotoMath as a cheating tool. We really wanted kids to learn,” said Tijana Zganec, a sales and marketing associate at tech company MicroBlink, which created PhotoMath. “If you want to cheat, you will find a way to cheat. But if you want to learn, you can use PhotoMath for that.”

Whether you’re a high schooler with eight periods of classes or a college student tackling dozens of credits, there’s one thing you’ve got for sure: a mess of assignments. iHomework can help you keep track of all your work, slicing and dicing it in a variety of ways. Sorting it by due date, week, month, or by course, the app is more organized than a Trapper Keeper. And in integrating data from Questia, you can link your reading material to your assignments so you don’t have to dig through a pile of papers to find the right information.

A scheduling feature can help you keep track of those random bi-weekly Thursday labs, and you can even mark the location of your courses on a map so you don’t end up on the wrong side of campus. And finally, with iCloud syncing, you can access all this information on whatever Apple-compatible device you’re using at the moment — no need to dig for your iPad.

Google Apps for Education

Taking the search giant’s suite of free browser-based apps and sandboxing them so they are safe for school use, Google Apps for Education is an excellent alternative to the mainstream installable productivity software, but this one has a perk that almost school board will love—it’s free. Packaging together favorites like Gmail, Hangouts, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Drive with Classroom, a digital hub for organizing assignments and sending feedback, the goal of this collection is to make learning a more collaborative process.

Though Google Apps for Education is cloud-hosted, the programs can be used offline, ideal for when your student needs to escape the internet and work distraction-free. And since it works on any device, it also helps students avoid buying overly expensive hardware. That means more money for extracurricular activities.

Price: Free, but some homework services require payment Availability: iOS and Android

HwPic is a tutoring service that allows students to take send pictures of their homework to tutors, who will then respond within minutes to your questions with a step-by-step solution. There’s even an option to expedite the answers if a student is in a hurry. HwPic Co-Founder Tiklat Issa said that the app was initially rejected by Apple’s App Store, which believed it would promote cheating, but he successfully argued that just because someone uses the app in a way that it’s not meant to be used doesn’t mean the app should be punished.

Issa added that HwPic prohibits cheating in its terms and conditions. Tutors don’t solve homework that has words like “Quiz” or “Exam,” and they often know if a student is sending a photo during a test if they’ve paid for expedited answers, and if the photo is dim, blurry and taken under a desk. “We’ve minimized cheating,” said Issa. “We haven’t eliminated it. That’s kind of unrealistic.”

Wolfram Alpha

Price : $2.99 Availability : iOS and Android

Wolfram Alpha is similar to PhotoMath, only that it targets older students studying high levels of math and doesn’t support photos. The service also outputs step-by-step solutions to topics as advanced as vector calculus and differential equations, making it a popular tool for college students.

“It’s cheating not doing computer-based math, because we’re cheating students out of real conceptual understanding and an ability to drive much further forward in the math they can do, to cover much more conceptual ground. And in turn, that’s cheating our economies,” said Conrad Wolfram, Wolfram Research’s Director of Strategic Development, in a TEDx Talk . “People talk about the knowledge economy. I think we’re moving forward to what we’re calling the computational knowledge economy.”

Homework Helper

Price: Free Availability: iOS and Android

Chinese Internet search company Baidu launched an app called Homework Helper this year with which students can crowdsource help or answers to homework. Users post a picture or type their homework questions onto online forums, and those who answer the questions can win e-coins that can be used to buy electronics like iPhones and laptops.

The app has logged 5 million downloads, much to the dismay of many some parents who argue that the students spend less time thinking about challenging problems. A Homework Helper staffer admitted to Quartz , “I think this is a kind of cheating.”

Price: Free, but some homework services require payment Availability: iOS

Slader is a crowdsourcing app for high school and college students to post and answer questions in math and science. While students can post original homework for help, many questions in popular textbooks have already been answered on the app, according to Fast Company . An Illinois high school said earlier this year that it suspected students were using the service to cheat on their math homework.

Slader argues that it’s “challenging traditional ideas about math and education,” and said that the ideas behind its app “aren’t a write-off to teachers,” according to its blog . Slader told San Francisco media outlet KQED that it shouldn’t be dismissed as a cheating tool, but rather considered a way for students to access real-time help.

5 apps to keep track of homework assignments

The new school year is almost upon us, and there's no time like today to get ready.

Whether you are the student or it's someone else in your family, it's important to keep things organized and on track from day one.

While these apps can be useful for a wide age group, be sure and check with your local school district to ensure you're not breaking any rules by sending your child or teen to school with a smartphone.

1. Evernote Price: Free Download: Evernote for iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad , Android , Window Phone 7 , BlackBerry , Palm Pre / Palm Pixi , Mac , Windows , web .

While it's not an actual planner or calendar app, if you take notes to stay organized, then Evernote is for you. Take photos, copy web pages, save PDF files or just take notes and organize them all into folders. Search for your notes via tags or keywords in the notes themselves. Evernote can even search for words located in pictures you've taken — a pretty cool feature.

You'll never lose another sticky note or forget a reading assignment when you jot it down in Evernote. Just pull up your notes on whatever device you have, wherever you are. Free accounts are allowed up to 60MB of upload (or synchronized) data per month, which can be upgraded for $5 per month or $45 per year.

2. FC Tasks Price : $5.99 Download : FC Tasks for iPhone .

FranklinCovey is one of the best-known names when it comes to pencil and paper (even digital stand-alone) day planners. You would expect this company to have a mobile app to help make our lives more organized, and you would be right.

The FC Tasks app is a great stand-alone mobile product for anyone who's used to using the FranklinCovey system of productivity and time management. You'll see the familiar ABC-123 ranking method for all the task lists, but that's only the beginning. With this app, you can create recurring tasks, create multimedia tasks, delegate tasks via email and more. This is a top-of-the-line app from a top-of-the-line company.

3. Remember the Milk Price: Free to download; requires Remember the Milk Pro for Android and BlackBerry users. Download: Remember the Milk for iPhone / iPad , Android , BlackBerry .

Remember the Milk is a great to-do list service. The basic service is available online and can be integrated with web apps such as Gmail, desktop apps such as Outlook and the mobile app platforms listed above. Set your tasks, prioritize and get email alerts when they are due. It's everything you want in a to-do list.

While the web app is great, taking Remember the Milk on the road is the key to making this app work for you. Browser add-ons and widgets for other apps such as Gmail make this service seamless with other apps that you're already using. Read more in our Remember the Milk review .

4. ToDoMatrix Price : Free Download : ToDoMatrix for iPhone , BlackBerry .

The free version of the ToDoMatrix app is limited to six folders and 30 tasks, which is probably enough for you if you're a casual user. If you're looking for something more than just a homework tracking app, you'll want to look at in-app upgrades to remove these limits.

What started as a productivity app designed for business-minded BlackBerry users has made the transition to mainstream with the debut of its iOS app. Organize tasks, set flexible reminders, delegate and view just what you want with multiple display options. Your data is encrypted and backed up wirelessly to the cloud. If you're a BlackBerry user, you probably already know about this one; if not, it's definitely worth checking out the free version to see if it meets your needs.

5. Google Calendar Price : Free Download : Google Calendar for web , iPhone Sync , Windows Mobile Sync , BlackBerry Sync .

We've saved the best for last, despite the non-app status of this service. We think you'll agree once you see how seamlessly this free service from Google integrates with literally all of your devices. Start out on the web app and set up your calendars. From there, you can sync your calendar to all of the major mobile operating systems out there.

Google Calendar doesn't miss a beat with Google's own Android OS , as would be expected. Once you set up your Android device, it's an automatic sync with the Google apps on your mobile device. If you're on another operating system, syncing the built-in calendars on these mobile devices to your Google Calendar account is simple. There are few limitations, flexible reminders, multiple calendars, share features and more.

Getting your time back It takes a little practice to see which planner or homework tracking app is going to work best for you. Don't wait until the last minute. Start now, before school kicks off, and try them all (or at least the free ones). Once you've settled on which app design works for you, don't look back. There's no point in second guessing your choice, and once school starts, you will want to feel confident in your ability to use your app to organize your time so you don't miss any important deadlines.

4 Apps That Can Help You with College Assignments

Photo of author

The time you will spend in college will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. But where college can be fun, it can be challenging as well. To pass your courses, you will have to take long lectures, participate in discussions, and sit in exams. You will also have to make assignments for all your courses, and that can prove challenging for a lot of students. When it comes to making assignments, you may be able to do it exceptionally well for one course but have no clue at all for another course. In this article, I have mentioned a few apps that can help you with your college assignments and will make a college a less stressful experience for you. Let’s take a look:

Wolfram Alpha

Today when we have a problem, we immediately search it on Google or on the store to see if there is an app available for it. Ask any college student who is good with assignments that if they know what Wolfram Alpha is and the answer will be yes. Wolfram Alpha is an app that is a computational knowledge engine, and it can help you find relevant and useful information on Science, technology, Maths, Society, Culture, and everyday life questions. This app not only helps you solve your assignments, but it makes you stand out as well.

A major part of making your assignments is to deal with a lot of documents. And whether you are looking for a pdf merge app or a document converter, Soda PDF is the answer. With the help of this app, you can easily edit, convert, and merge any type of PDF documents.  And that is not it; Soda PDF also allows you to scan documents, books, and other types of written texts and lets you convert the image scan into a document with its OCR technology. The app is extremely easy to use, and you can install it on your laptop or your phone.

Dragon Dictation

Another app that will help you out a lot with your assignments is Dragon dictation. For a lot of students, the major challenge when doing an assignment is not the research but the actual writing. With the help of dragon dictation, you can write down just the major points and can start speaking your mind. The app will record every word, and later you can play it back to write the assignment. All you have to do is change some sentence structuring and improve grammar, and you will have your assignment.

MyScript Calculator

This app is for the students who are taking mathematics courses and still like to solve the equations the old fashioned way. With Myscript, you don’t have to add the equation by typing it on your phone or tablet; instead, you can just write it on the screen just like you would in your notebook, and the software will recognize your question. This is a great app if you want to practice with your formulas and want to remember them better.

How to negotiate more financial aid as a college student.

A close up of federal financial aid application

Is it possible to negotiate more financial aid? originally appeared on Quora : the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.

Answer by Kristen Moon, Founder & CEO at Moon Prep | Forbes Contributor, on Quora :

Colleges have continued to raise their prices year after year. In the past 20 years, in-state tuition at public universities has increased by an astounding 158 %. The cost of attending a university is one of the many factors students are considering when making their college choice. As May 1, "decision day," draws near, students should evaluate their financial aid offers with the cost of attendance to determine feasibility. With no relief in sight from rising tuition costs, students and their families might be wondering how they can get more financial aid from schools. Here are five steps students should follow to negotiate for more financial aid.

Step 1: Access Changes In Your Financial Situation

When schools initially send out their aid offers, they often use a formula to evaluate the family's ability to pay for college. Of course, a standardized system will always have flaws, giving the student wiggle room to negotiate with the college.

To negotiate successfully, students must prove their need is more significant than indicated on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or the CSS Profile. When families fill out these forms, the information collected is based on two-year-old tax and income information. Many things might have changed since then, and these forms often don’t address those unique financial circumstances that families might find themselves in.

Google Chrome Gets Third Emergency Update In A Week As Attacks Continue

Japanese fans are puzzled that yasuke is in ‘assassin’s creed shadows’, forbes releases 2024 30 under 30 asia list.

For example, families might have recently experienced high healthcare expenses, job loss or change in compensation, care for an elderly grandparent or a child with disabilities, natural disaster, change in marital status or family size, unusual capital gains, the loss of child support or Social Security benefits for a child, or many other factors. All of these factors and more can play a role in changing how much aid a family should get.

Step 2: Gather Relevant Documents

Once the family has accessed what has changed in their financial situation, the next step is to gather any necessary documentation to help demonstrate the changes or special circumstances. Make copies of any documents and include them in the appeal.

Step 3: Compare Other Aid Offers From Comparable Colleges

The next step is to look at the other financial aid offers received. If another university offers a student a substantial amount, they can use that in negotiations with their top choice university. However, only compare similar schools—a financial aid offer from a private university isn't comparable to an offer of financial assistance from a public university.

Step 4: Write A Letter Appealing For More Aid

The student is encouraged to be the one to contact the financial aid office. Colleges like to see the student take ownership of the application journey, and it might be better received if the student is the one to write it.

In the letter, clearly state what has changed and why more aid is necessary to be able to attend college. This letter shouldn't be more than 1-2 pages—the student doesn't need to include their entire life story, but it should continue with the relevant documents to prove that more aid is necessary.

The tone of the letter should remain courteous—remember, the financial aid officers do want to help students get more aid, but sometimes, they can't help more. Remaining polite in the initial letter and any further correspondence can help make a better impression.

Before writing and sending the letter, check with the institution on how they want to receive the letter. There might be a particular form that should go with the letter or be in a certain format. Following instructions can help improve the chances of getting more funds.

Step 5: Wait To Pay The Deposit

Students can appeal for aid at any point if their financial situation changes, including after the May 1 deadline. However, it might help if they wait to submit their enrollment deposit until they have written the appeal letter. It would also give students the chance to weigh all of their options more fully once they have the final decision from the financial aid office.

What Won't Work

  • Making appeals based on academic merit. When trying to bargain for more financial aid, one thing that isn't considered is the student's academic achievements. If a student's grades or test scores have improved, which might mean they can qualify for a better merit-based scholarship, the student should contact the admissions office.
  • Comparing a financial aid offer from a dissimilar institution. On average, the cost for a private college in 2021-2022 was $38,185, whereas public school attendees paid $10,338 in-state tuition or $22,698 out-of-state tuition. Because of the higher sticker price, a student's overall scholarship at a private institution tends to be higher. However, because the overall cost of attendance isn't the same for private vs. public schools, students shouldn't use a financial aid offer from Drexel University to negotiate with the University of Michigan.
  • Harassing the financial aid office to get a response. Colleges are not obligated to give more money, regardless of the family's financial situation. Therefore, students and parents should respect the financial aid officers' time.

This financial aid letter can be worth thousands of dollars. Even if your appeal for more aid fails, your offer of acceptance is not in jeopardy. Do your research, prepare the documents, and write the letter to make your dream school more attainable.

Need help finding friends or roommates in college? These UM students built an app for that

  • Updated: May. 12, 2024, 8:06 p.m. |

college assignments app

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Going to college in a new town and finding all new friends can be intimidating.

Luckily, there’s an app for that.

Four University of Michigan juniors have developed a platform dedicated to helping college students find friends, roommates, study buddies and more, before they even step foot on campus. Since its inception, MeetYourClass has swept across college campuses nationwide, with over 360,000 users at 900 schools.

Co-founder Blake Mischley, 20, a computer sciences major from Grand Rapids, said MeetYourClass isn’t trying to replace Instagram, Facebook or Tik Tok. He said they’re utilizing those social media sites to amplify their platform and connect to students who they wouldn’t otherwise reach.

“When we started this, one of our main theses was, students don’t want to download another crappy social media,” Mischley said. “We’re never going to compete with Mark Zuckerberg. But where we can compete is building an informational hub where students can find each other, find resources easily.”

Mischley started MeetYourClass in September 2022 with UM students Kaleb Schmottlach, 21, Jon Millar, 20, and Jonah Liss, 20. Mischley, Schmottlach and Millar all graduated from Forest Hills Northern High School in Grand Rapids, and Liss went to International Academy in Bloomfield Hills.

The goal of MeetYourClass is to help prospective, incoming and current college students meet their classmates and connect with people with similar interests. Mischley said the app can make the transition to college easier for students who are coming to a new campus from a different city, state or country, and need help finding friends.

“Building that community for students is really important, because I would say Gen Z, Gen Alpha are much more experience-based, much more relationship-based…” he said. “They want to go into college with that peace of mind that they at least have some form of community or group before they get there.”

Here’s how the website works: Users create a profile where they can add their photos, hometown, major, interests, and what they’re looking for, whether that’s friends, roommates or someone to study or work out with.

Then, students can post their profile to a university-specific feed on the MeetYourClass website where their classmates can find and message each other.

Students can also post questions and polls that other users can respond to, similarly to other social media platforms, and there’s a global feed option to see posts from students at other schools.

Mischley said they’ve also integrated social media to help funnel more students to the app. MeetYourClass runs over 300 school-specific social media communities on Instagram and Facebook, where students can post their profiles to each social media page and connect with other students at the same school.

Many students are using social media as their “search engines” nowadays, Mischley said. By creating social media communities for each school, MeetYourClass can draw in students who are searching for things like “UM Class of 2028” or “dorm tours” on Facebook or Instagram, he explained.

“Our bread and butter is reaching students where they are,” he told MLive/The Grand Rapids Press.“If a student is not on our platform, they’re never going to delete Instagram. So whether or not they’re on our platform, we’re usually still able to engage with them in some way.”

One feature that Mischley says makes MeetYourClass stand out from other platforms is a full text search, where students can search for what they’re looking for and find profiles that meet their needs.

Instead of scrolling through an endless feed of profiles and posts – like on Facebook, or even dating apps like Tinder and Hinge – users can search keywords and use filters to find people with similar interests, students from the same hometown, or even specify those who are looking for friends or roommates.

“So if I wanted to look for people looking for a roommate, from Detroit, who played tennis, that will show me maybe the 50 people out of the 6,000 people that are at my school that actually fit that category, and I can reach out to them,” Mischley said.

Mischley said the idea for MeetYourClass got started while he and Liss were pursuing another business venture during their freshmen year at UM. The two were working to develop a caffeinated beverage and looking for ways to market their product, when they decided to create a platform where they could centralize an audience of students.

During that process, they realized there was more value in centralizing students than just promoting a caffeinated beverage, Mischley recalled. So they dropped the drink and went full in on MeetYourClass, together with Schmottlach and Millar.

In its first year, the app grew to over 170,000 users, and it’s more than doubled since then. The team has since received $120,000 through TechStars Detroit , a venture capital accelerator program, and $42,000 through competitions, Mischley said.

They’ve also added five fulltime employees to help with development, produce design and community management.

MeetYourClass has also since added another side to the business model, which is partnering with universities to help them increase visibility and reach more students, Mischley said. The team is reaching out to university admission departments and pitching the platform as a tool that can help schools draw more students, he said.

Mischley said he’s hoping the app can prove to be beneficial as many universities struggle with falling enrollment nationwide.

“There’s a lot of macroeconomic issues facing the higher education industry, between a declining student population because of declining birth rates, you can learn about anything online nowadays, decreasing state funding,” he said. “So higher ed really will need to make some shifts to adjust to new generational trends, so we’re particularly excited at the opportunity that we are kind of in right now to help these colleges.”

“Hopefully in a few years, we’ll just keep growing our list of institutions and the amount of students we’ve helped.”

From mental health crises to college apps, nonprofit helps Somali youth in central Ohio

college assignments app

As Jibril Ahmed walked out of his final exam — a math test — he breathed a sigh of relief.

“I think I did OK, but I’m so happy to be done,” said Ahmed, 20, cracking a wide smile outside of the Columbus State Community College library.

He is studying computer science and plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree next year at Ohio State University.

Still in the midst of his academic journey, he has already come a long way.

Ahmed fled his native country of Somalia for a Kenyan refugee camp, then moved to a new home and culture in America and lost his father — all before the age of 10. After undergoing a mental health crisis as a high schooler in 2021, he connected with the Buckeye Ranch, whose outreach workers helped him get treatment and apply to Columbus State, becoming the first person in his family to attend college.

Improving his mental health has been a big part of his academic success, he said.

“The journey taught me a lot — not to be afraid or not to be shy. Sometimes, you need to ask for help,” Ahmed said.

The Buckeye Ranch, founded in the early 1960s, offers a wide range of mental health services and support for children, youth, and families in central Ohio. Through a special outreach program funded by Franklin County Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health, the nonprofit ranch works with more than 300 young people like Ahmed in Columbus’ large Somali American community. Outreach workers assist Somali youth and their families with everything from mental health to accessing employment and housing services.

Nafisa Jamale, a community-based clinical supervisor with the program, said she has seen Ahmed and other clients make major strides.

“(Ahmed) almost gave up school. He was like, ‘I can’t do this,’” she said. “But I'm happy with what he’s accomplished … it just shows me what we can do for the community and there's hope for next generations.”

Addressing lingering trauma in the Somali community

Jamale, a licensed social worker who is herself Somali American, said many of her clients face lingering trauma, but they approach mental health with a different perspective than Western medical practitioners.

“A lot of the first generation — due to their experience in refugee camps or their parents going through the (Somali) civil war — there is a very high rate of trauma symptoms and other mental health disorders in the community,” she said.

But too often, the stigma of mental illness means problems go unaddressed, she said.

“A lot of times, Somali families are like, 'No, no, no, we're not doing medication,'" she said. “… But I find that Somali families will listen more to a Somali clinician.”

Jamale and her teamwork with families to find solutions that work for them, she said. If clients do need medication, the team helps the family monitor for side effects and follow up.

Kamilah Twymon, the Buckeye Ranch’s vice president for community-based and education services, said the team is lucky to have many Somali American staff, who understand not only the language but also the cultural background of their clients.

“Nafisa is our first supervisor that is Somali. … We're incredibly proud of that, and she has done an amazing job at bridging that gap,” Twymon said.

Multi-system therapy helps youth confront mental health issues together with families

In 2021, Ahmed, then a student at Horizon Science Academy Columbus High School, had a mental health crisis that required his mother to call the police. He was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for treatment, which, in turn, referred him to the Buckeye Ranch’s Somali outreach program.

Ahmed received multi-systemic therapy, a program where mental health professionals conduct regular home visits, helping youth and their families deal with any problems as a family unit.

The workers helped Ahmed learn social and emotional skills, including breathing techniques and other ways to deal with negative emotions, Jamale said.

Recognizing Ahmed had a desire to keep learning, they also helped him apply to colleges and seek financial aid. This is something that his mother, who is not fluent in English, would not have been able to do, according to Jamale.

Once Ahmed got in into Columbus State, Buckeye Ranch staff helped him find an after-school job, get extra tutoring, and even what COTA bus route to take between campus Downtown and his home in Northland.

Two years later, Ahmed now walks around campus — where he used to get lost — with confidence. He said he will miss Columbus State once he moves on to Ohio State University.

After finishing his computer science degree, he hopes to one day start his own cybersecurity company.

“That's one of the highest in-demand jobs in the country,” he said. “… I am also thinking about creating an app that could help people (access aid) with natural disasters.”

Jamale said she and Ahmed have become friends over the years, and his academic success inspires her.

“With Buckeye Ranch — and I’m not saying this because I work here — but I think we are really educating and helping a lot of families come forward to seek further help,” she said.

Ahmed agreed.

“Mental health wasn't easy for me. … It was a very difficult journey for me and my family," he said. "But (Buckeye Ranch and its resources) were there and supporting every step of the way.”

Morehouse College to cancel commencement if President Joe Biden's speech is disrupted

college assignments app

If anyone interferes with President Joe Biden’s commencement speech at Morehouse College Sunday, all ceremonies will be canceled “on the spot," David A. Thomas, college president, told CNN Thursday.

Thomas said the school will not allow “disruptive behavior that prevents the ceremony or services from proceeding in a manner that those in attendance can partake and enjoy.”

Commencement ceremonies at colleges and universities across the country have been interrupted or modified in recent weeks, prompting schools to move celebrations off campus over student-led protests in response to the Israel-Hamas war, according to USA TODAY.

Ceremonies will be “ceased” if any disruptive behavior escalates, that includes any “prolonged shouting down” while the president speaks. Thomas said he also won't allow police to remove students from the ceremony in zip ties.  "I will cease the ceremonies on the spot If we were to reach that position," he said.

“I would rather be the first president to have a failed commencement than to say you are less important than the ceremonies of this institution,” Thomas told CNN.

College can ‘hold tensions,’ only allowing silent protests

The only thing Thomas will not stand for on commencement day, or any other day is the demonstration of “hate speech,” calling for violence against another group or individuals, he shared.

Morehouse College is a place that “can hold” tensions. Thomas said the school is a place that can support different points of view and schools of thought.

“We need some place in this country that can hold the tensions that threaten to divide us … We look around some of the most venerable institutions of higher education have canceled commencement, canceled valedictorian speakers because of their having spoken out and exercised their rights to free speech," Thomas told CNN.

Which is why Morehouse College will allow students to protest. Silently.

“As long as you don’t conduct yourselves in a way that deprives others from being able to participate, consume and celebrate this moment,” Thomas told CNN. “You want to walk across the stage in a piece of garment that identifies your moral connection to either side of this conflict because we also have Jewish students here, you can do that.”
