Oral History Project: Tell Me Your Story
Writing: Grades 9 - 12 (Used in conjunction with Holocaust Unit)

Essential Understandings
Personal, family, and community history are a source of information for the individuals
about the people and places around them.
Effective preparation and participation in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners builds on others’ ideas.
Integrating and evaluating information can be presented in diverse media and formats to include written and visual products.
Context Statement:
Students will gather, preserve, and interpret the voices and memories of people, communities, and participants in past events. They will record and videotape interviews with people having first-hand knowledge of events. They will produce a cumulative written and visual work based on their findings.
Task:
Students will produce an oral history project in which they research, develop interview questions, conduct interviews, and produce a creative piece in which they express what they learn through writing, video, and visual mediums.
Student Outcomes/Specific Tasks:
1. Select a person at least 30 years of age to interview.
2. Provide interviewee with Letter of Invitation and Release Form.
3, Fill out interview Planning Sheet
4. Prepare a list of interview questions
5. Conduct a written and recorded interview
6. Produce a final product/portfolio to include:

Transcription of favorite part of interview
Biographical essay
Reflection essay
Collage (vocabulary slides)
Teacher Directions
Before the task:
Teacher guides the students through the step-by-step Google slide presentation and project study guide, which includes essential questions, terminology/vocabulary process, interviewing videos, and model examples.
During the task:
Collect, monitor, and evaluate all steps in the process providing feedback in both full-class and individual conferencing.
After the task:
Provide time for students to evaluate and edit final products using both peer and teacher conferences
Evaluate using relevant rubric
