Greetings, I've got questions and I’d like your help on how to solve them. We are currently learning about the Present Perfect (Continuous) Tense and during class a classmate asked the professor how to translate a sentence. The professor then translated the sentence as “Has she been doing her homework yet?” The meaning we are trying to have here is that she has been doing her homework and she’s still doing it even now. Now I’d like to ask if it’s possible to use YET in PPC. I personally think it is wrong both technically and grammatically, and I would use Present Perfect "Is she still doing her homework?" or just “Has she been doing her homework?” My professor said she would investigate more about it. So she asked her friend that studied in America. That friend told her that it’s not a problem to use ‘yet’ in PPC and that maybe people don’t use it in everyday conversations but it’s not grammatically wrong. So, is it fine to use ‘yet’ even though it’s never been mentioned/used in PPC? Thank you in advance.

Linguo IS Dead

"Has she been doing her homework yet?" doesn't make sense to me. The problem is that "yet" refers to a completed action. If you want to talk about ongoing action, you use "still". I'd think you mean either: "Has she started yet?" or "Is she still doing her homework?" From your description, it looks like you want to say both things: She started her homework at some point in the past, and now, in the present, she is still doing her homework. In other words, she started at 7:00, kept working, and at 10:00 (now), she is still working. I might describe this situation a couple of ways: - If I want to ask whether she started or not, I would say, "Has she started her homework yet?" - If I know that she started, and want to emphasize the fact that she's taking a long time, I would say, "Is she still doing her homework?", or "Has she been doing her homework this whole time?" - If I know that she started, and want to ask whether she finished or not, I would say, "Has she finished her homework yet?", or "Is she done with her homework yet?" But if you really want to ask both things: 1) whether she started and 2) whether she's still doing it, then you have to ask the question like that, in two parts: "Has she started doing her homework, and if so, is she still doing it?" Does this make sense?

I completely agree with you. I'm also aware of the difference between still and yet in this case. I also told her in proper English I'd use either "Is she still doing her homework?" or "Has she been doing her homework?" But she insisted that 'yet' can be used and is, according to her friend, gramatically correct except not being used in everyday conversations. You've given me a very detailed reply with many circumstances. I'm very grateful for that.

Pertinax

"yet" is sometimes used with continuous aspect. Examples: I haven't been swimming yet. We've not been shopping yet.

Yes, it can be used with negative sentences like that but that wasn't what I was talking about. Thanks anyways.

I don't think it is correct to say "Has she been doing her homework yet." The example of Pertinax with "Has she been shopping yet" is some kind of false analogy because of the way "Been shopping" is used in English.. You wouldn't say 'Has she shopped yet?" It's almost like a fixed expression. I agree with everything Linguo said. If you really want to ask both questions together, I think you would have to say "Did she start her homework yet and if so has she finished it?"

jeune linguiste said: English is so complicated. The other person says it's wrong while you say it's right even though both of your native languages are English. What should a foreigner, like me, do? Click to expand...

Enquiring Mind

Enquiring Mind

This becomes more of a philosophical question, as grammar is just a codification of what native speakers find acceptable. We don't even know the "rules" half the time. In this case, I think we are pretty much all in agreement that we wouldn't say this. If we don't find it acceptable, then it is "ungrammatical" almost by definition. I think the main point would be that you are advised not to use this construction.

I do not think that the construction can be considered ungrammatical, however unappealing the example above. Although uncommon, there are many examples on the internet, such as this cross-section from searching on "Have you been getting * yet?": Have you been getting ready for Christmas yet? http://www.sewinginthepast.com/2010_11_01_archive.html Have you been getting much feedback yet? http://fileslinger.com/category/online-backup/ Have you been getting enough sleep yet? http://www.myspace.com/NikLover7/comments Have you been getting much press coverage in Europe yet? http://freakangels.com/whitechapel/comments.php?DiscussionID=7899 In many cases, "started" sounds better to me than "been". But "started" does not work well in all cases, e.g. the last two examples above.

Thank you all for sharing your opinions. I see that there's a difference between grammar and its usage in everyday conversations, like in any other language.

Grammar Basics: Unit 51 – She said that…, He told me that…

When we want to report on something someone has said, we can use the form “ X said (that)… ” and then change the verb from the present to the past.  (Using that is optional.):

am ==> was: Tom:  “I’m hungry.” ==> Tom said (that) he was hungry. will ==> would: Mother:  “Hurry up or you’ll be late for school.” ==> Mother said (that) I should hurry up or I would be late for school. are ==> were: Kent:  “We are going camping for our vacation this year.” ==> Kent said (that) they were going camping for their vacation this year. have ==> had: Jane:  “I have to do my homework.” ==> Jane said (that) she had to do her homework. can ==> could: Mike:  “I can’t go to the party.” ==> Mike said (that) he couldn’t go to the party. do ==> did: Betsy:  “I don’t know how to whistle.” ==> Betsy said (that) she didn’t know how to whistle. look ==> looked, seem ==> seemed, feel ==> felt, etc. : Dave:  “It looks like it will rain.” ==> Dave said (that) it looked like it would rain. Nancy:  “You seem angry.” ==> Nancy said (that) I seemed angry. You:  “I feel sick.” ==> I said (that) I felt sick.

We can also use “ X told me / you / him / her / us / them (that) … ” in almost the same way:

Tom said (that) he was hungry. ==> Tom told Jack (that) he was hungry. Mother said (that) I should hurry up or I would be late for school. ==> Mother told me (that) I should hurry up or I would be late for school. Kent said (that) they were going camping for their vacation this year. ==> Kent told us (that) they were going camping for their vacation this year. Jane said (that) she had to do her homework. ==> Jane told her friends (that) she had to do her homework. Mike said (that) he couldn’t go to the party. ==> Mike told Mr. Smith (that) he couldn’t go to the party. Betsy said (that) she didn’t know how to whistle. ==> Betsy told him (that) she didn’t know how to whistle. Dave said (that) it looked like it would rain. ==> Dave told her (that) it looked like it would rain. Nancy said (that) I seemed angry. ==> Nancy told Mother (that) I seemed angry. I said (that) I felt sick. ==> I told you (that) I felt sick.
  • “ X told me (that)… ” NEEDS an object (me, you, him, her, etc.)

Mike told (that) he couldn’t go to the party.     (You need Mr. Smith after told .)

  • “ X said (that)… ” does NOT need an object.

Tom said me (that) he was hungry.   (You shouldn’t have me after said .)

Exercise.  Report what the following people said by writing sentences using “X said (that)…”

George:  “I can’t tell a lie.” ==> George said that he can’t tell a lie.

Kelly Clarkson confirms medication helped her lose weight: 'It's not' Ozempic

she her homework recently

Kelly Clarkson is opening up about using medication amid her weight loss journey — though not the medication you might think.

In a conversation Monday with Whoopi Goldberg on "The Kelly Clarkson Show ," Clarkson revealed she took a prescription drug that helped her lose weight, though she noted it's a "different one than people assume." The " American Idol " alum shared that her doctor "chased" her for "like two years" urging her to get on medication, though she was "afraid" to do so because of her thyroid problems.

"Everybody thinks it's Ozempic ," she said. "It's not. It's something else. But it's something that aids in helping break down the sugar. Obviously, my body doesn't do it right."

Clarkson previously shared on her show that she lost weight after being told that she was pre-diabetic. According to the Mayo Clinic , a prediabetes diagnosis means a person has a higher blood sugar level than normal and is at high risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. Clarkson said doctors told her she was "on the borderline" of diabetes, though the diagnosis didn't shock her because she was "a tiny bit overweight."

While speaking with Goldberg, the "Since U Been Gone" singer said she needed to get on medication after her bloodwork "got so bad."

Goldberg, meanwhile, told Clarkson that she has lost enough weight for "almost two people" after "doing that wonderful shot that works for folks who need some help."

"It's great for people like us who have issues," the "View" host added.

Kelly Osbourne says Ozempic use is 'amazing' after mom Sharon's negative side effects

During their interview, Goldberg and Clarkson both shared similar experiences of not initially realizing how much weight they had gained, with Clarkson recalling a moment she didn't recognize herself while looking back at footage she shot. "I watched that show and I was like, 'She is any second now (going to) die,'" Clarkson reflected, referring to herself. Goldberg also remembered a film critic incorrectly thinking she was wearing a "fat suit" in the 2022 movie "Till."

In a January interview with People, Clarkson said she lost weight "because I've been listening to my doctor — a couple years I didn't." She also told the magazine that since moving her talk show to New York , "walking in the city" has helped her get in shape and that she was on a protein diet.

Though Clarkson did not name the medication she was prescribed, Goldberg previously revealed on "The View" that she used Mounjaro, which treats Type 2 Diabetes.

Peter Doocy Reacts On Fox News After Jen Psaki Says She Never 'Hated' Him

she her homework recently

There appears to be little bad blood between Jen Psaki and Peter Doocy despite their history of tense sparring in the White House briefing room.

Psaki, President Joe Biden ’s former White House press secretary, discussed her relationship with the Fox News reporter in her new book, “Say More.” In a recent interview published by The Ankler, she was asked about how she had described him as a constant thorn in her side in the press room.

“People often ask me, ‘How much did you hate that guy?’ And I’m always like, ’ No, I didn’t hate him at all, ’ ” Psaki replied.

“I feel like it would be a real mind-bend to work for Fox. It feels like a traumatizing experience he has to live through every day.”

On “Fox & Friends” Tuesday morning, Doocy was asked for his reaction to the statement from Psaki, who is now an MSNBC host.

He told his colleagues he actually got along with her.

“When I think back to Jen’s time here, there were some moments of real tension in the briefing room because the issues of the day were really, really heavy,” he said.

He added that he was “happy to hear her say that. I was raised to be a nice guy.”

“I like to think I’m pretty affable, but it goes to show she really liked to fight in the briefing room. She was there to fight for and go on offense for President Biden,” he continued.

“She did her job very well, and it was great doing some briefing room combat with her from time to time.”

Though the two routinely engaged in headline-making clashes while Psaki was press secretary, she spoke kindly of him ahead of her departure from the White House in May 2022.

While she didn’t “agree with his line of questioning on most days,” she said at the time , “I think we have a very good professional relationship.”

Doocy, for his part, said she had been a “good sport” and he was sorry to see her go.

Kelly Osbourne opens up on painful memory when she was told she was 'too fat for TV'

the osbourne daughter recently addressed rumors she had taken weight loss drugs.

Faye James

Kelly Osbourne has opened up about a painful memory from her past when she was told she was "too fat" for television by a film executive.

The 39-year-old shared this experience on the latest episode of The Osbournes podcast, reflecting on an incident from the early 2000s without naming the executive involved.

"When I was a kid, I got pulled into the head of the agency's office, and he was putting golf balls into a cup," Kelly recounted. "He gave me a whole speech about how I was too fat for TV and needed to lose weight. He said if I lost weight, I would look better."

At that time, Kelly had been cast as Lindsay Lohan's best friend in Freaky Friday. However, she left the project when her mom, Sharon Osbourne, was diagnosed with cancer.

"He was just saying, 'You're not a movie star, but you could be one if you lost weight,'" Kelly recalled.

Her brother, Jack Osbourne, commented on the situation, calling it "the most L.A. s--t ever," to which Kelly responded, "I know. As he's putting golf balls into a cup in his office. And I was just like, this is the most insulting f***ing [thing]."

Recently, Kelly has been addressing rumors about her dramatic weight loss, with speculation that she had used Ozempic, a popular weight loss drug in 2024.

"I know everybody thinks I took Ozempic," Kelly said in an April interview with Extra. "I did not take Ozempic. I don't know where that came from. My mom took Ozempic."

Kelly credits her son Sidney, whom she welcomed with her husband Sid Wilson in 2022, for her impressive 85-pound weight loss.

"I had gestational diabetes and I had to lose the weight that I had gained during pregnancy," she explained. "Otherwise, I was at a higher risk of actually getting diabetes, which I did not want. I cut out sugar and carbohydrates and I rapidly lost weight."

While Kelly didn't use Ozempic herself, she's a fan of it, calling it "amazing." She shared with E! News.

"There are a million ways to lose weight. Why not do it through something that isn't as boring as working out?" Kelly also revealed that she had the gastric sleeve surgery, which significantly contributed to her weight loss.

Pregnancy weight gain and subsequent weight loss left Kelly with sagging skin, which she has been addressing with non-surgical procedures.

She mentioned turning to treatments like EmFace and EmSculpt to tighten her skin. "I'm halfway through my four face sessions, and I'm noticing such a huge difference already," she said of the procedure, which uses high-intensity electromagnetic waves to tone and contour the body and face.

Scarlett Johansson Says She Was ‘Shocked’ and ‘Angered’ Over OpenAI’s Use of a Voice That Was ‘Eerily Similar to Mine’

Scarlett Johansson

Actor Scarlett Johansson said she turned down OpenAI ‘s request for her to lend her voice to a conversational ChatGPT system — and that she was “shocked” and “angered” that the company went ahead and used a voice that sounded very similar to hers anyway.

Johansson, in a statement provided to Variety , said her lawyers contacted OpenAI to have the voice of Sky, one of the new voices in the GPT-4o chatbot, pulled down .

“When I heard the released demo, I was shocked, angered and in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and news outlets could not tell the difference,” Johansson said. “Mr. Altman even insinuated that the similarity was intentional, tweeting a single word ‘her’ — a reference to the film in which I voiced a chat system, Samantha, who forms an intimate relationship with a human.”

According to Johansson, two days before OpenAI staged the ChatGPT 4.0 demo, Altman contacted her agent, “asking me to reconsider. Before we could connect, the system was out there.”

Asked for comment, OpenAI sent this statement from Altman: “The voice of Sky is not Scarlett Johansson’s, and it was never intended to resemble hers. We cast the voice actor behind Sky’s voice before any outreach to Ms. Johansson. Out of respect for Ms. Johansson, we have paused using Sky’s voice in our products. We are sorry to Ms. Johansson that we didn’t communicate better.”

SAG-AFTRA issued a statement in support of Johansson and seconded her call for legislation in this area.

“We thank Ms. Johansson for speaking out on this issue of crucial importance to all SAG-AFTRA members. We share in her concerns and fully support her right to have clarity and transparency regarding the voice used in developing the Chat GPT-4o appliance ‘Sky,’” a union spokesperson said in a statement to Variety . “SAG-AFTRA members are among the most talented and often most recognizable people on the planet. That is why we’re strongly championing federal legislation that would protect their voices and likenesses – and everyone else’s as well – from unauthorized digital replication.”

The rep for the actors union added, “We are pleased that Open AI has responded to these concerns and paused their use of ‘Sky,’ and we look forward to working with them and other industry stakeholders to enshrine transparent and resilient protections for all of us.”

The Johansson-soundalike ChatGPT voice was the basis of a joke on the season finale of “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend, aimed at her husband, Colin Jost, co-host of Weekend Update. Reading a joke (written by Michael Che) off a cue card, Jost said, “ChatGPT has released a new voice assistant feature inspired by Scarlett Johansson’s AI character in ‘Her,’ which I’ve never bothered to watch because without that body, what’s the point of listening?”

Read Johansson’s full statement:

Last September, I received an offer from Sam Altman, who wanted to hire me to voice the current ChatGPT 4.0 system. He told me that he felt that by my voicing the system, I could bridge the gap between tech companies and creatives and help consumers to feel comfortable with the seismic shift concerning humans and Al. He said he felt that my voice would be comforting to people.

After much consideration and for personal reasons, I declined the offer.

Nine months later, my friends, family and the general public all noted how much the newest system named ‘Sky’ sounded like me.

When I heard the released demo, I was shocked, angered and in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and news outlets could not tell the difference. Mr. Altman even insinuated that the similarity was intentional, tweeting a single word ‘her’ — a reference to the film in which I voiced a chat system, Samantha, who forms an intimate relationship with a human.

As a result of their actions, I was forced to hire legal counsel, who wrote two letters to Mr. Altman and OpenAl, setting out what they had done and asking them to detail the exact process by which they created the ‘Sky’ voice. Consequently, OpenAl reluctantly agreed to take down the ‘Sky’ voice.

In a time when we are all grappling with deepfakes and the protection of our own likeness, our own work, our own identities, I believe these are questions that deserve absolute clarity. I look forward to resolution in the form of transparency and the passage of appropriate legislation to help ensure that individual rights are protected.

Crime and public safety | manhattan stabbing victim used last words to name ex-boyfriend as killer: family.

Shirley Rodriguez was stabbed to death early Monday outside the Washington Heights apartment building where she lived with her family.

Shirley Rodriguez, 29, was bleeding on the sidewalk early Monday morning outside the Washington Heights apartment building where she lived with her family when she fingered Tyquan Jemmott, 33, family said.

Rodriguez’s mom, dad and sister rushed down the stairs of the building at W. 172nd St. and Haven Ave., where they heard her screams and saw her blood.

The victim’s sister said she and her parents came across a horrifying scene after her sibling rang the buzzer and they dashed down.

“She turned to me and she said, ‘It was Ty,'” said the 32-year-old sibling, Tibby. “She was standing in between the two cars. The wound I saw was her face … I think he stabbed her in the head, too.

“There was so much blood. It was everywhere. All over the steps, the cars.”

Henry Rodriguez, the victim’s father, said his daughter had called an Uber, then started buzzing the intercom a short time later.

“She was calling for help,” he said. “She said, ‘Dad, dad, hurry. Come downstairs’ So I threw something on and I went downstairs with a kitchen knife because obviously something was up. I ran down the stairs and it was just a bloody scene. And my daughter was standing there with a big gash on her face.”

An Uber driver there told the father the attacker was dressed in black and ran down the street toward a park.

“My instinct was to chase him, but I couldn’t leave her by herself,” said Henry Rodriguez. “She was bleeding. He was gone. Somebody else chased him.”

Cops later arrested Jemmott, who lives in the Bronx, police said. He was taken into custody on suspicions of killing Rodriguez while he was at his uncle’s house, which is in the same borough.

While in custody, he was sent to an area hospital after complaining that he felt ill, cops said. On Tuesday afternoon he was charged with murder and weapon possession. .

The Uber driver recorded the carnage and played it for the dad, who said he couldn’t watch it again after viewing it twice.

“I don’t need that to be replaying in my head,” he remarked.

Shirley Rodriguez was rushed shortly after 5:30 a.m. to Harlem Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Later Monday, Rodriguez’s devastated parents wailed as they rubbed their hands through the slain woman’s blood, which stained the hood of a Hyundai outside the building.

Shirley Rodriguez was stabbed to death early Monday, May 20, 2024, outside the Washington Heights apartment building where she lived with her family.

Family members said she was on her way to her 6 a.m. shift as a lab technician at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

The killer was lying in wait behind a car as Rodriguez walked to a double-parked Uber, cop sources said.

Police said the attack lasted a minute. Cops have video of the killer slashing, stabbing, punching and dragging Rodriguez as she bravely fought back. Several bystanders including the Uber driver called 911. Police said two men chased the suspect along Haven Ave., but he got away.

But that did little to ease the pain or quell the anger in the hours after the brutal killing.

Rodriguez broke it off with her boyfriend last week, her sister said. They had been dating for about two years.

Tibby, who did not share her last name, said she wasn’t surprised when her sister said the ex’s name.

“Who else could’ve done it?” she said. “Unless it was some random person. He was harassing her. I wasn’t surprised.”

Shirley Rodriguez was stabbed to death early Monday, May 20, 2024, outside the Washington Heights apartment building where she lived with her family.

Still, she said the family felt betrayed because they had been so accepting of Jemmott and open with him.

“He spent Christmas with us,” Tibby said. “He was here for Christmas, Thanksgiving, my grandfather’s funeral.”

“In the beginning, she would be like, ‘Yeah he’s a good guy, he travels, he has a good family,’” the sister recounted. “And then it turned into, you know, ‘He won’t give me my space.’ He would show up at her job sometimes. She’d be like, ‘You can’t do that, I’m working.’

“He wouldn’t give her her space and he didn’t respect those boundaries she was setting.”

Tibby said the two met on social media, and in the end, it was their undoing.

“One of her last straws was when she posted a baby picture on her Instagram story and he accused her of having a new follower,” the sister recalled. “And she got fed up and blocked him. Then he started texting her. He would keep track.

“I’m like, you have enough time in a day? Why don’t you focus on your career, focus on bettering yourself instead of looking at how many people someone’s following or if there’s a new follower.”

About a week ago, the victim finally called it quits, according to Tibby.

“He wouldn’t stop texting her,” she said. “I literally told her like, you know, don’t respond. He was sending her stuff about church … He sent her a video of some guy preaching about how you’re meant to be with the people in your life.”

The texts were annoying, but Tibby said her sister wasn’t scared.

“He didn’t threaten her,” she said. “It was more like, ‘Please talk to me, I love you.’ That was it. At least from what I’ve seen.”

She said the boyfriend was in their home about two weeks before the stabbing.

“He was here on May 5 eating a f–king burrito,” she said. “That same day he went to my grandma’s house to play bingo. He sat there that day playing bingo.”

Her father said the boyfriend seemed like a nice guy.

“You know, he works,” Henry Rodriguez said. “He was a manager at the T-Mobile. He was not a problem guy. Easygoing.”

Tibby said her younger sister loved dogs and used to pet sit for neighbors.

“She wanted to be a veterinarian tech,” she said.

A 29-year-old woman was stabbed to death outside her Manhattan apartment building.

The sisters were inseparable.

“We even had matching tattoos,” she said, pointing to a star behind her ear and another symbol on her hip … a euphoria star. My first tattoo that I got with my sister is this one here. She has it on the same side. It’s a symbol of love, life and loyalty. She has them in the same spot. I got the star last year with her.”

The victim’s mother, Mehira Rodriguez, was left devastated by the slaying.

“She was a good girl,” she said. “She was going to work. I’m dying with hurt. Why he do that to my daughter? We opened the door to my house. I can’t believe it — he killed her. Why?”

    3. Does she do her homework? To ask a question, we need to use an auxiliary verb at the beginning of the sentence. In our case, the auxiliary verb is do: this is called do-support. But since "she" is a singular third-person pronoun, we turn do into does. The first do carries the third-person ending s (or es) instead of the second.
