If the soil quality deteriorates due to such practices, the soil will become infertile and no crops could be grown in future. The government has launched various schemes over the years to fight pollution but individual efforts can also play a vital role.

The government can also bring strict rules and regulations to lessen industrial pollution.

The time has come to join hands and work towards preserving and protecting the environment for the present as well as future generations.

Noise pollution can be minimised by better design and proper maintenance of vehicles. Industrial noise can be reduced by soundproofing equipment like generators, etc.  

To control soil pollution, we must stop the usage of plastic. Sewage should be treated properly before using it as fertilizers and as landfills. Encourage organic farming as this process involves the use of biological materials and avoiding synthetic substances to maintain soil fertility and ecological balance. 

Several measures can be adopted to control water pollution. Some of them are water consumption and usage that can be minimized by altering the techniques involved. Water should be reused with treatment.

The Great Smog of London, 1952, was an extreme case of air pollution where visibility was severely hampered. It also caused a host of illnesses and the consequent deaths of countless civilians. In November 2017, the levels of air pollution in Delhi were ten times above the safe limits. For reference, the healthy air quality index is between 0 to 50, but during that particular time period, the air quality index hit 500+. This event is now called the Great Smog of Delhi.

Use of eco-friendly fuel-  We have to adopt the usage of Eco-friendly fuels such as LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), bio-gas, and other eco-friendly fuels. So, we can reduce the amount of harmful toxic gases.

To sum it up, we can say that the air we breathe is getting more and more polluted day by day. The biggest contribution to the increase in air pollution is of fossil fuels which produce nitric and sulphuric oxides. But, humans have taken this problem seriously and are devotedly working to eradicate the problem that they have created.

Above all, many initiatives like plant trees, use of eco-friendly fuel are promoted worldwide.

Environmental pollution is the unwarranted discharge of mass or energy into the planet’s natural resource pools, such as land, air, or water, which detriments the environment’s ecological stability and the health of the living things that inhabit it. There is an intensified health risk and pollution in middle and low-income countries due to the increased use of pesticides, industrialization, the introduction of nitrogen-based fertilizers, forest fires, urbanization, and inadequate waste management (Appannagari, 2017). Air pollution, lead and chemicals exposure, hazardous waste exposure, and inappropriate e-waste disposal all result in unfavorable living conditions, fatal illnesses, and ecosystem destruction. The essay will provide an overview of pollution and proffer solutions to combating pollution for a sustainable environment and health.

In addition to hindering economic development and considerably accelerating climate change, pollution exacerbates poverty and inequality in urban and rural areas. The most pain is always experienced by the poor, who cannot afford to protect themselves against pollution’s harmful effects. The main environmental factor contributing to sickness and early mortality is pollution due to premature deaths resulting from pollution (Appannagari, 2017). Due to the unacceptably high cost to human capital and health, as well as the resulting GDP losses, pollution must be addressed. Through initiatives like reducing black carbon and methane emissions, which are responsible for air pollution and climate change, pollution management can also significantly contribute to climate change mitigation (Appannagari, 2017). Additionally, pollution control can promote competitiveness through, for instance, job growth, increased energy efficiency, better transportation, and sustainable urban and rural development. Below are the various approaches for solutions to health and pollution problems.

First, governments should evaluate pollution as a national and international priority and integrate it into the city and country planning process. Pollution affects the health and well-being of societies and, as such, cannot be solely viewed as an environmental issue (The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, 2017). All levels of government should give pollution prevention a high priority, incorporate it into development planning, and tie it to commitments regarding climate change, SDGs, and the prevention of non-communicable diseases. Some options are both affordable and offer good returns on investment.

Secondly, governments should increase funding for pollution control and prioritize it by health impacts. There should be a significant increase in the financing for pollution management in low- and middle-income nations, both from national budgets and international development organizations (The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, 2017). The most effective international support for pollution reduction is when it mobilizes additional actions and funding from others. Examples include helping towns and nations that are quickly industrializing concerning technical capacity building, regulatory and enforcement support, and support for direct actions to save lives. Monitoring financing initiatives are necessary to determine their cost-effectiveness and to raise accountability.

Thirdly, organizations should work to build multicultural partnerships for pollution control. Public-private partnerships and interagency cooperation can be powerful tools in creating clean technology and energy sources that will ultimately prevent pollution at its source (The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, 2017). Collaborations between ministries that include the ministries of finance, energy, development, agriculture, and transport, as well as the ministries of health and the environment, are crucial in pollution control. Governments should promote monitoring systems that could identify and apportion pollution sources, measure pollution levels, guide enforcement, and assess progress toward goals. The use of new technology in pollution monitoring, such as data mining and satellite images, can boost effectiveness, broaden the monitoring area, and cut costs.

One of the main issues facing the world in the current period is pollution. Natural resources are depleting daily due to car emissions, new technologies, factories, and chemicals added to food. All of these factors seriously harm the world. However, the problems caused by pollution can be prevented by building multicultural partnerships, increasing funding for pollution control, integrating it into the country’s planning process, and adopting new technology for monitoring pollution. Preventing pollution lowers the cost to the environment and the economy.

Project dimming Canberra's street lights shows 25 per cent reduction in light pollution

An "adaptive lighting" project in Canberra, which reduced the brightness of streetlights by up to half, showed a 25 per cent reduction in light pollution.

The project used around 30,000 "smart" streetlights in Canberra during off-peak times, and also found a reduction in carbon emissions.

What's next? 

It's hoped the approach can be applied elsewhere, with the New Zealand cities of Auckland and Christchurch already looking into it.

Looking up at the thousands of street lights that illuminate our cities, former town planner and designer Danny Bettay has always asked one simple question: "Do we really need this, or is this overkill?".

"Historically, street lights were designed, indirectly for people, but designed for technologies, essentially for horse and carriage,"  Mr Bettay said.

"And over 200 years of having these infrastructures embedded in our environment, we have slowly come to realise that there's some environmental harms of technologies that we've created in the past."

In order to reduce the impact street lighting has on the environment, Mr Bettay initiated a trial in Canberra of something called "adaptive lighting"  — dimming or brightening street lights to match people's needs at the time.

Of Canberra's roughly 83,000 streetlights, more than 30,000 have been fitted with LED globes and "smart nodes",  which allow their brightness to be controlled remotely from a laptop.

So between 11pm and 5am during the first half of 2024, the streetlights, mainly in areas less used at night, were dimmed 10 per cent every 15 minutes until they were at half of their usual brightness.

Clearing the sky

Up at Canberra's Mt Stromlo Observatory, astronomer Brad Tucker was monitoring cameras measuring how bright the night sky was, and along with satellite data, looking to see whether the dimming was revealing more of the night sky.

"So what we were finding during this dimming is that as the lights would dim, we could definitively ... measure a reduction of light pollution," Dr Tucker said.

"So for every 10 per cent the lights are dimmed, it's about a 5 per cent change in the glow of the sky.

"So when we dim all the way to about 50 per cent, that means the sky has been reduced by about 25 per cent in terms of brightness."

Dr Tucker said with even a 25 per cent clearer view of the night sky, the amount of extra detail was profound.

"So as that gets to that 25 per cent level, we're seeing 25 per cent 'darker-ness' of the sky, so we'll see more stars," Dr Tucker said.

"We'll see the fainter stars will be a bit brighter, the brighter stars will get even brighter, and some new stars pop out that were previously lost.

"Things like the Milky Way, detail of the Milky Way got a little bit more better resolved as that sky dropped."

On top of the reduction in light pollution, the scientists found the reduction in brightness of the lights reduced their carbon emissions by 1,085 tonnes.

The scientists also hope a reduction in light can also help animals who've been disrupted by growing cities and towns.

'Scalable in any context'

The Australian-first trial was started when Mr Bettay was working for private company Omexom, which is contracted by the ACT government and is now the focus of Mr Bettay's PhD at the Australian National University.

Mr Bettay said he hopes the results of their trial can be applied in other jurisdictions, but that the ACT was uniquely placed to embark on the project as its government owns the street-lighting infrastructure, which is not the case in other major cities in Australia.

He's already in discussions with the New Zealand cities of Auckland and Christchurch about the results.

"I guess it's up to the other jurisdictions to think about why they want to use adaptive lighting, but the technology and the approach itself is scalable in any context," Mr Bettay said.

"Auckland is a much bigger city than Canberra, but they have 110,000 lights that are equipped with smart nodes that have been equipped for a while, they just haven't used them.

"They're a city much more akin to Sydney as opposed to Canberra, so they have a night-time economy that they need to take into consideration, so it's a little bit different to Canberra."

Mr Bettay said part of the trial involves monitoring the risk to safety, crime and traffic by reducing light on streets, but that the reduction is often hard for the human eye to detect.

"We've had engineers and other street lighting practitioners who've had 30 plus years experience, who sat out and looked at street lights with us, and they were unable to distinguish between 70 per cent and 100 per cent," Mr Bettay said.

"So I think it's hard for the human eye to detect that change, although some people have, some people say they can detect the change between 50 per cent and 100 per cent."

Regaining connection

Dr Tucker hopes reducing light pollution through things like adaptive lighting can help build back our connection to the night sky.

"Humans have been around on this earth for hundreds of thousands of years, but we've kind of erased our connection to the sky in about 100 years," Dr Tucker said.

"We've kind of erased a part of human culture and human history, not just for people like Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders with their deep connection to land and sky, but for all of us who, we like to go out and enjoy the views, we like to enjoy out and see what's above.

"We go away camping and we go away into dark skies so we can, you know, escape and disconnect, and if you start losing that ability, we're never going to be disconnected."

Pioneering research discovers PFOS chemical pollution in platypuses

Research from Western Sydney University has discovered PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) chemical contamination in the livers of deceased platypuses across eastern New South Wales.

The Australian-first study, which was published in Environmental Science and Pollution Research , analyzed liver samples from nine deceased platypuses which were collected from community members over a two-and-a-half-year period.

Lead researcher and Ph.D. candidate from Western Sydney University's School of Science, Katherine Warwick said she was shocked at the levels of PFOS, which is a type of PFAS (per-and poly-fluoroalkyl substances), which were detected.

"We had eight platypuses from the wild and the ninth, which had spent the majority of its life in captivity," said Ms. Warwick said.

"The eight from the wild had concentrations of PFOS which ranged from 4 micrograms per kilogram to 1,200 micrograms per kilogram, which really showed us that PFOS in aquatic environments is far more widespread than initially believed."

"I thought we would find PFOS in one or two platypuses in low doses, so it was shocking to find it in all the wild platypuses. This is a first-of-its-kind study, so it is exciting for me as a Ph.D. candidate, and to have this opportunity provided to me by Western Sydney University has set me up to lead this field and really promote platypus health in a broad scale sense."

PFAS is a group of human-made chemicals used to resist heat, water, grease and stains, which are known as 'forever chemicals' as they don't break down.

With platypuses being a top order predator that provide valuable environmental insights, Ms. Warwick said that further research needs to be conducted into how they are consuming the PFOS chemical and its origins.

"This has showed us that even minute traces of PFOS in the water can accumulate to incredibly high levels within platypuses. This is a synthetic chemical which should not be in the water at all so any concentration is bad, but the maximum we found is astonishingly high," she said.

"We know PFOS is hydrophobic and doesn't like water, so what it does is stick to the sediment. Platypuses forage for macroinvertebrates or water bugs on the bottom of the rivers, so we believe that when they disturb the sediment and eat the macroinvertebrates, they incidentally ingest some contaminated sediment."

"The highest concentration of PFOS that was detected was from a platypus found in the Hunter River in Maitland, which was the only one near a recorded PFOS hotspot, so it was not a surprise given the location. There is no publicly available data for the areas where the other platypuses were found, so we are calling for additional data to be released if it does exist or if it doesn't, for governing bodies to look further into this."

Ms. Warwick's research was supervised by Associate Professor Ian Wright and Dr. Michelle Ryan, both from the School of Science.

"Katherine and our colleague Dr. Michelle Ryan have worked extremely hard with these sensitive and cryptic creatures, and I couldn't be more delighted for Katherine and the work she has put into this research paper ," Associate Professor Wright said.

"We don't have much water in Australia, and it is precious, so these findings are incredibly important and a sign that we need to manage our water supplies and make sure they are good for our wildlife but also for us."

Study proposes cleaner fuels for Mumbai bakeries to combat air pollution 

Effective collaboration and policy support will be vital for the success of this transition to cleaner fuels, which will drastically reduce air pollution, benefiting public health and environmental quality in mumbai.

A six-month technical study by the Bombay Environmental Action Group (BEAG) has revealed significant insights into the impact of Mumbai’s bakery sector on air pollution. The report has proposed a roadmap and actionable recommendations for policymakers to facilitate the transition to cleaner fuels. 

Surveying over 200 bakeries, the study titled, ‘Envisioning a Sustainable Bakery Industry for Mumbai’ found that most bakeries still use wood-fired ovens, which emit harmful pollutants including particulate matter (PM), methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These emissions pose severe health risks to Mumbai’s residents, the study said.  

Transitioning from wood-fired ovens to cleaner fuels is crucial for improving air quality, safeguarding public health, and ensuring a sustainable future for the city. The study’s recommendations align with the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) objectives, emphasising the need for regulatory support and collaboration among bakery owners, policymakers, and environmental organisations. 

The Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP) by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) states that there is a mandate for all bakeries to obtain licences to move to cleaner fuels for which the timeframe given is till the year 2027.  

The study aimed to investigate fuel usage trends in Mumbai’s bakeries, map their geographical distribution, identify obstacles to adopting cleaner fuels, and propose practical solutions to promote sustainable fuel choices.

Dr. Tuhin Banerji, Project Head of the study, said, “Solid fuel burning is one of the toughest sources of pollution to abate. The bakery sector uses solid fuels from diverse origins. By allocating funds from the National Clean Air Programme and forming partnerships with the private sector, we can provide the technical and financial assistance needed to transition to cleaner fuels. Strengthened regulatory measures will ensure compliance and long-term sustainability.” 

Through RTI applications, data collection on registered bakeries in Mumbai for the years 2017 and 2023 was obtained. Surveys were conducted across 17 wards and collated information on fuel usage, bakery operations, and the feasibility of transitioning to cleaner fuels. Geographic mapping was performed using Google Earth, Google Maps, and ArcGIS. Data analysis evaluated the environmental impact of current practices and the benefits of cleaner alternatives. A cost-benefit analysis identified the most viable fuels for transitioning. 

Overall, 47.10% of the 200 registered bakeries surveyed predominantly use wood as fuel, primarily sourced as scrap wood from old furniture and dilapidated buildings due to its lower cost compared to logwood. This practice significantly contributes to the city’s pollution levels.  

The larger wood-consuming bakeries reported daily usage between 250 and 300 kilograms of wood, while the average wood consumption for wood-fired bakeries stood at approximately 130 kilograms daily. To process 20 kilograms of flour into ‘pav,’ about 4-5 kilograms of wood are required. The cost of scrap wood is around ₹4-5 per kilogram, whereas logwood costs ₹10-12 per kilogram. The ash generated from wood-fired bakeries is often disposed of in dumping grounds, contributing to air pollution, the study finds.  

The environmental impact of these practices is staggering. Emissions from wood-fired ovens are a major source of PM10 and PM2.5, tiny particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs, causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Burning of these scrap woods also produces VOCs that cause cancers, asthma, and many other diseases. These VOCs also lead to formation of haze and ground level ozone. 

Electricity was the second most common fuel, used by 28.10%. Other fuel options, including LPG, PNG, diesel, and hybrid fuels, were less frequently used, with LPG+Electricity being used by 20.90% bakeries.  

Hema Ramani, former campaigns director at BEAG said, “Tackling emissions from bakeries is an achievable target. Being nestled in residential areas, they cause grave health concerns. With positive stakeholder engagement and incentives, there is a good possibility that all bakeries will transition to cleaner fuels within the next two years.” 

The team visited and surveyed 23 bakeries in Byculla, Agripada, Madanpura, Saat Rasta, and Mahalaxmi and found that the bakeries here have the highest usage of wood and electricity, with 12 using wood and 7 relying on electricity. The team also visited and surveyed 21 bakeries in the areas of Sandhurst Road, Dongri, Umerkhadi, Bhendi Bazaar, Andheri (West), Juhu, Versova and found that 13 out of 21 bakeries notably relied heavily on LPG for energy.  

The BEAG study highlights the problem but also proposes and recommends implementable solutions in a phased approach for a smoother transition. 

The recommendations include conducting cost-benefit analyses to assess the economic feasibility and benefits of cleaner fuels, helping understand financial implications and long-term gains. To reduce the initial investment burden on bakery owners, introducing subsidies, tax breaks, or other financial incentives is advised. Collaboration between government bodies, bakery owners, and stakeholders is crucial for setting realistic targets and facilitating the adoption of cleaner fuels. Tailored regulatory requirements based on bakery size and operations are essential for an effective transition. 

The research team suggest short team recommendations (within six months), “Conducting ward-wise workshops to raise awareness about the health benefits and pollution impact of cleaner fuels. Involving Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) and oven manufacturers to ensure a smooth transition to PNG and optimising ash disposal practices to comply with environmental regulations,” Mr. Banerji explains.  

Similarly, there are medium-term 9 (six months to one year) recommendations that include prioritising the transition of large, registered bakeries to electricity or PNG due to their higher fuel consumption and emissions; addressing registration issues for unregistered bakeries and initiating studies on emission inventories, ash disposal regulations, and bakery categorisation to incentivise cleaner operations. 

There are also long-term (one to two years) recommendations: ensure all bakeries are registered and comply with zero percent open ash disposal and promote sustainable practices to reduce the environmental impact of Mumbai’s bakery sector, contributing to a healthier and cleaner city.
