గ్లోబల్ వార్మింగ్ (భూమి వేడెక్కడం)

-సూర్యకిరణాలు భూమిపై పడి పరావర్తనం (Reflection) చెందుతాయి. వీటిని వాతావరణంలో అధిక మొత్తంలో ఉన్న CO2, CH4, N2O, SF6, HFC, CFC, నీటి ఆవిరి తదితరాలు గ్రహించి భూమిపైన వాతావరణాన్ని వేడెక్కింపజేసే ప్రక్రియను గ్లోబల్ వార్మింగ్ అంటారు. ఇందుకు ప్రధాన కారణం చెట్లను నరికివేయడం.

-పై అన్ని వాయువులను గ్రీన్‌హౌస్ గ్యాసెస్ (జీహెచ్‌జీ) లేదా హీట్ ట్రాపింగ్ గ్యాసెస్ అంటారు. -గ్లోబల్ వార్మింగ్‌కు ప్రధాన కారణమయ్యే వాయువు కార్బన్ డై ఆక్సైడ్ (CO2) -ప్రపంచ గ్రీన్ హౌస్ వాయువుల్లో అమెరికా నుంచి విడుదలయ్యేవి 25 శాతం -CH4 (మీథేన్)- తడి భూములు, వరి పంటపొలాలు, జంతు వ్యర్థ పదార్థాల్లో ఉంటుంది. కావున దీన్ని మార్ష్ గ్యాస్ అంటారు. -N2O- సముద్రాలు, మృత్తిక, ఎరువులలో ఉంటుంది. -SF6, HFC (Hexa Fluoro Corbons)- రిఫ్రిజిరేటర్స్ నుంచి వెలువడుతాయి. -ఒక వ్యక్తి లేదా పరిశ్రమ లేదా గృహం నుంచి విడుదలయ్యే CO2 ఇతర గ్రీన్‌హౌస్ వాయువుల మోతాదును కార్బన్ ఫూట్ ప్రింట్ అంటారు. -కార్బన్ ట్యాక్స్ ప్రవేశపెట్టిన మొదటి దేశం: న్యూజిలాండ్

-ధృవాలలోని మంచు కరిగి సముద్రమట్టం పెరుగడం వల్ల లోతట్టు ప్రాంతాలు ముంపునకు గురవుతాయి. -వర్షపు చినుకులు మధ్యలోనే ఆవిరి కావడం వల్ల సరస్సులు, నదులు ఎండిపోతాయి. ఒక్కసారి మాత్రమే వర్షం పడుతుంది. -వేసవి ఉష్ణోగ్రతలు పెరిగి, వడదెబ్బకు మరణిస్తారు. -ఉష్ణమండల ప్రాంతాల్లో వ్యవసాయ దిగుబడి తగ్గి సమశీతోష్ణ ప్రాంతాలలో పెరుగుతుంది.

ఆమ్ల వర్షాలు లేదా ఆమ్ల అవక్షేపం

-ఐపీసీసీ ప్రకారం PH5.6 కంటే తక్కువ కలిగిన వర్షపునీటిని ఆమ్లవర్షం అంటారు. -నిజానికి ఈ వర్షం మంచు, పొగమంచు రూపంలో పడుతుంది. దీంతో దీనిని ఆమ్ల వర్షం అనడం కంటే ఆమ్ల అవక్షేపం అనడం సబబని శాస్త్రవేత్తల భావన.

ఆమ్లవర్షాలు- కారణాలు

-పారిశ్రామిక విప్లవంలో భాగంగా ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా ముఖ్యంగా అభివృద్ధి చెందిన దేశాలలో జరిగిన, జరుగుతున్న పారిశ్రామికీకరణ. -వాతావరణంలో CO2 నీటి ఆవిరితో కలిసి బైకార్బోనెట్స్‌గా మారడం వల్ల PH విలువ తగ్గడం. -పరిశ్రమల నుంచి ముఖ్యంగా నూనె శుద్ధి కర్మాగారాల నుంచి విడుదలయ్యే సల్ఫర్‌డైఆక్సైడ్, న్రైట్రోజన్ ఆక్సైడ్స్.

-ఆమ్లవర్షాలు నేలపై పడినప్పుడు నేల రసాయనిక స్వభావం మారుతుంది. -నేలలోని అనేక భారాలోహ మూలకాలు వాటి పూర్వస్వభావాన్ని కోల్పోయి విషతుల్యంగా మారి ఉపయోగకరమైన సుక్ష్మజీవులపై మొక్కలపై ప్రతికూల ప్రభావాన్ని చూపుతాయి. -ఆమ్లవర్షాలు మొక్కల పత్రాలపై పడితే వాటి పత్రహరితం క్షీణించి ఫలితంగా ఉత్పాదకత తగ్గుతుంది. -మానవుడు వంటి ఉన్నత జీవులలో సల్ఫ్యూరిక్ ఆమ్లం వల్ల కంటి సమస్య, శ్వాస ఇబ్బందులు తలెత్తుతాయి. -మానవుడు వంటి క్షీరదాలలో ఆమ్ల వర్షాల వల్ల చర్మంలో జాంథోప్రొటీన్ ఉత్పత్తి చేయబడి పసుపు రంగులోకి మారుతుంది.

ఓజోన్ క్షీణత(O3)

-ఓజోన్ అనేది లేతనీలం రంగులో ఉండే వాయు పదార్థం. ఇది ఆక్సిజన్‌కు సంబంధించిన ఒక రూపం. -భూమి నుంచి పైన ఉండే రెండో పొర అయిన స్ట్రాటోస్పియర్‌లో 20-35 కిలోమీటర్ల మధ్య ఓజోన్ పొర ఉండి అత్యంత శక్తిమంత కిరణాలైన అతినీలలోహిత కిరణాల (UV-కిరణాలు) నుంచి ట్రోపోస్పియర్‌లో ఉండే జీవకోటిని రక్షిస్తుంది. -ఓజోన్ పొర కొనుగొన్న శాస్త్రవేత్తలు చార్లెస్ ఫాబ్రి, హెన్నీ బుయ్‌నన్ కాగా, ఈ పొర ధర్మాలను జీఎంబీ డాబ్‌సన్ అనే శాస్త్రవేత్త వివరించారు.

ఓజోన్ క్షీణతకు కారణాలు

-ఓజోన్ పొర క్షీణతకు ప్రధాన కారణం- క్లోరోఫ్లోరోకార్బన్స్(CFCs). ఇవి రిఫ్రిజిరేటర్స్, ఎయిర్ కండీషనర్స్, కంప్యూటర్స్ నుంచి విడుదల చేయబడి వాతావరణంలో ఏ మార్పు చెందకుండా, ఎక్కువ స్థిరత్వాన్ని కలిగి ఉంటాయి. ఈ CFCsను UV-కిరణాలు శోషించి విశ్లేషణ చెంది క్లోరిన్ పరమాణువులను విడుదల చేసి ఓజోన్‌ను క్షీణింపజేస్తాయి. -పరిశ్రమలు, ఎరువుల కర్మాగారాల నుంచి విడుదల చేయబడే నైట్రోజన్ ఆక్సైడ్ కూడా ఓజోన్‌ను క్షీణింపజేస్తుంది. -మంటలు ఆర్పడానికి ఉపయోగించే బ్రోమిన్ క్లోరిన్ కంటే మరింత సమర్థవంతంగా ఓజోన్ పొరను విచ్ఛిన్నం చేస్తుంది. -బట్టలను, లోహాలను శుభ్రపరుచడానికి ఉపయోగించే టెట్రాక్లోరైడ్ కూడా ఓజోన్‌ను క్షీణింపజేస్తుంది. -ధృవ స్ట్రాటోస్పిరిక్ మేఘాలు కూడా ఓజోన్ క్షీణతకు మరో కారణం.

-కిరణాలకు ప్రభావితమైన వారికి కార్సినోమా, మెలనోమా అనే క్యాన్సర్ వస్తుంది. -రక్తనాళాలలో రక్తప్రవాహ రేటు పెరిగి చర్మం ఎర్రగా మారి బొబ్బలు ఏర్పడతాయి. -ల్యుకేమియా, స్త్రీలకు రొమ్ముక్యాన్సర్ వస్తుంది. -కాటరాక్ట్ అనే కంటి సంబంధిత వ్యాధులు వస్తాయి. -UV-కిరణాల వల్ల DNA ప్రభావితమై రోగనిరోధక శక్తి తగ్గుతుంది. -కిరణజన్య సంయోగక్రియ తగ్గి ఫలితంగా ఆహారోత్పత్తి తగ్గుతుంది. -పత్రాలు నిర్వర్తితం కావడం, పత్రాలు తెగిపోవడం వల్ల వృక్షసంపదకు తీవ్రహాని కలుగుతుంది. -ఓజోన్ పొర పలుచబడడం వల్ల ప్రపంచ ఉష్ణోగ్రత పెరుగుతుంది. ఫలితంగా ధృవాలలో మంచుకరిగి సముద్రమట్టం పెరుగుతుంది. -జీవ ఎరువులుగా ఉపయోగపడే సయనోబ్యాక్టీరియా UV-కిరణాలను తట్టుకోలేవు. కావునా పంట దిగుబడి తగ్గుతుంది.

COP-21పారిస్ సదస్సు

-వాతావరణ మార్పులపై ఐక్యరాజ్యసమితి పర్యావరణ సదస్సు ఫ్రేమ్‌వర్క్(UNFCCC ) ఆధ్వర్యంలో కాన్ఫరెన్స్ ఆఫ్ పార్టీస్ (COP-21) శిఖరాగ్ర సదస్సు 2015 నవంబర్ 30వ తేదీ నుంచి డిసెంబర్ 12 వరకు ఫ్రాన్స్ రాజధాని పారిస్‌లోని లీ బౌర్గెట్‌లో జరిగింది. అందుకే ఈ సదస్సును పారిస్ సదస్సు లేదా ఒప్పందం అని కూడా పిలుస్తారు. -ఈ సదస్సును అప్పటి ఫ్రాన్స్ అధ్యక్షుడు ఫ్రాంకోయిస్ హోలాండే ప్రారంభించారు. -హాజరైన దేశాల సంఖ్య: 150 -2014 నివేదిక ప్రకారం కర్బన ఉద్గారాలను గరిష్ఠ సంఖ్యలో విడుదల చేస్తున్న దేశాలు -1. చైనా (25.3శాతం) 2. అమెరికా (14.1 శాతం) 3. యురోపియన్ యూనియన్ (10.2 శాతం) 4. భారత్ (6.9 శాతం) 5. రష్యా (5.7శాతం) 6. జపాన్ (3.1 శాతం) -COP-21 చారిత్రాత్మక ఒప్పందం- ఈ సదస్సులో వాతావరణ నియంత్రణపై డిసెంబర్ 12, 2015న భూతాపం పెరుగుదలను 2 డిగ్రీల సెల్సియస్ కంటే తక్కువకు పరిమితం చేయాలని 195 దేశాల ప్రతినిధులు పర్యావరణాన్ని పరిరక్షించే 31 పేజీల ఒప్పందానికి ఆమోదం తెలిపారు. -నోట్: పారిస్ ఒప్పందం(cop-21) నుంచి వైదొలుగుతున్నట్టు అమెరికా అధ్యక్షుడు డొనాల్డ్ ట్రంప్ ఇటీవల ప్రకటించారు. -COP-22 మొరాకోలోని మారకేశ్ దగ్గరగల బాబ్ ఇగ్లిలో జరిగింది. (7-18 నవంబర్, 2016). దీనినే CMP-12 లేదా CMA1

ఓజోన్ పరిరక్షణకు UNO చర్యలు

-ఓజోన్‌పొరను సంరక్షించే ప్రయత్నాలలో భాగంగా UN-Environmental Programme (UNEP) 1976లో చేపట్టి 1977లో పరిరక్షణ ఉద్యమానికి పిలుపుఇచ్చింది. -ఓజోన్ పొరను పరరిక్షించవలసిన బాధ్యత ప్రతి ఒక్కరిపైన ఉన్నదని తెలిపేందుకు 1994లో UNOశాఖ అయిన ప్రపంచ వాతావారణ సంస్థ (WMO) సెప్టెబంర్ 16న మాంట్రియల్ ప్రోటోకాల్ గుర్తుగా ఓజోన్ దినంగా ప్రకటించినది.

UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention Climate Change)

-బ్రెజిల్‌లోని రియోలో జరిగిన ఒప్పందాలలో ఇదీ ఒకటి (1992). -అమల్లోకి వచ్చింది: 21 మార్చి, 1994. -ఈ ఒప్పందంపై సంతాకాలు చేసిన సభ్యదేశాలను 3 రకాలుగా విభజించారు. -Anex-1 Countries – పారిశ్రామిక, పరివర్తన చెందే దశలో ఉన్న దేశాలు. -Anex-2 – అభివృద్ధి చెందిన దేశాలు -Anex-3- అభివృద్ధి చెందుతున్న దేశాలు -UNFCCC ప్రతీ ఏటా నిర్వహించే సదస్సును కాన్ఫరెన్స్ ఆఫ్ పార్టీస్ (COP) అంటారు. -ఈ ఒప్పందం ప్రకారం Anex-1 దేశాలన్నీ 2012 నాటికల్లా గ్రీన్‌హౌస్ వాయువుల ఉద్గారాలను 1990లో ఉన్న స్థాయిలో 5.2 శాతం మేరకు తగ్గించాలి.

Human activity affects global surface temperatures by changing Earth ’s radiative balance—the “give and take” between what comes in during the day and what Earth emits at night. Increases in greenhouse gases —i.e., trace gases such as carbon dioxide and methane that absorb heat energy emitted from Earth’s surface and reradiate it back—generated by industry and transportation cause the atmosphere to retain more heat, which increases temperatures and alters precipitation patterns.

Global warming, the phenomenon of increasing average air temperatures near Earth’s surface over the past one to two centuries, happens mostly in the troposphere , the lowest level of the atmosphere, which extends from Earth’s surface up to a height of 6–11 miles. This layer contains most of Earth’s clouds and is where living things and their habitats and weather primarily occur.

Continued global warming is expected to impact everything from energy use to water availability to crop productivity throughout the world. Poor countries and communities with limited abilities to adapt to these changes are expected to suffer disproportionately. Global warming is already being associated with increases in the incidence of severe and extreme weather, heavy flooding , and wildfires —phenomena that threaten homes, dams, transportation networks, and other facets of human infrastructure. Polar bears live in the Arctic , where they use the region’s ice floes as they hunt seals and other marine mammals . Temperature increases related to global warming have been the most pronounced at the poles, where they often make the difference between frozen and melted ice. Polar bears rely on small gaps in the ice to hunt their prey. As these gaps widen because of continued melting, prey capture has become more challenging for these animals.

Climate scientists have since the mid-20th century gathered detailed observations of various weather phenomena (such as temperatures, precipitation , and storms) and of related influences on climate (such as ocean currents and the atmosphere’s chemical composition). These data indicate that Earth’s climate has changed over almost every conceivable timescale since the beginning of geologic time and that human activities since at least the beginning of the Industrial Revolution have a growing influence over the pace and extent of present-day climate change .

Giving voice to a growing conviction of most of the scientific community , the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was formed in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), published in 2021, noted that the best estimate of the increase in global average surface temperature between 1850 and 2019 was 1.07 °C (1.9 °F). An IPCC special report produced in 2018 noted that human beings and their activities have been responsible for a worldwide average temperature increase between 0.8 and 1.2 °C (1.4 and 2.2 °F) since preindustrial times, and most of the warming over the second half of the 20th century could be attributed to human activities.

AR6 produced a series of global climate predictions based on modeling five greenhouse gas emission scenarios that accounted for future emissions, mitigation (severity reduction) measures, and uncertainties in the model projections. Some of the main uncertainties include the precise role of feedback processes and the impacts of industrial pollutants known as aerosols , which may offset some warming. The lowest-emissions scenario, which assumed steep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions beginning in 2015, predicted that the global mean surface temperature would increase between 1.0 and 1.8 °C (1.8 and 3.2 °F) by 2100 relative to the 1850–1900 average. This range stood in stark contrast to the highest-emissions scenario, which predicted that the mean surface temperature would rise between 3.3 and 5.7 °C (5.9 and 10.2 °F) by 2100 based on the assumption that greenhouse gas emissions would continue to increase throughout the 21st century. The intermediate-emissions scenario, which assumed that emissions would stabilize by 2050 before declining gradually, projected an increase of between 2.1 and 3.5 °C (3.8 and 6.3 °F) by 2100.

Many climate scientists agree that significant societal, economic, and ecological damage would result if the global average temperature rose by more than 2 °C (3.6 °F) in such a short time. Such damage would include increased extinction of many plant and animal species, shifts in patterns of agriculture , and rising sea levels. By 2015 all but a few national governments had begun the process of instituting carbon reduction plans as part of the Paris Agreement , a treaty designed to help countries keep global warming to 1.5 °C (2.7 °F) above preindustrial levels in order to avoid the worst of the predicted effects. Whereas authors of the 2018 special report noted that should carbon emissions continue at their present rate, the increase in average near-surface air temperature would reach 1.5 °C sometime between 2030 and 2052, authors of the AR6 report suggested that this threshold would be reached by 2041 at the latest.

The AR6 report also noted that the global average sea level had risen by some 20 cm (7.9 inches) between 1901 and 2018 and that sea level rose faster in the second half of the 20th century than in the first half. It also predicted, again depending on a wide range of scenarios, that the global average sea level would rise by different amounts by 2100 relative to the 1995–2014 average. Under the report’s lowest-emission scenario, sea level would rise by 28–55 cm (11–21.7 inches), whereas, under the intermediate emissions scenario, sea level would rise by 44–76 cm (17.3–29.9 inches). The highest-emissions scenario suggested that sea level would rise by 63–101 cm (24.8–39.8 inches) by 2100.

The scenarios referred to above depend mainly on future concentrations of certain trace gases, called greenhouse gases , that have been injected into the lower atmosphere in increasing amounts through the burning of fossil fuels for industry, transportation , and residential uses. Modern global warming is the result of an increase in magnitude of the so-called greenhouse effect , a warming of Earth’s surface and lower atmosphere caused by the presence of water vapour , carbon dioxide , methane , nitrous oxides , and other greenhouse gases. In 2014 the IPCC first reported that concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxides in the atmosphere surpassed those found in ice cores dating back 800,000 years.

Of all these gases, carbon dioxide is the most important, both for its role in the greenhouse effect and for its role in the human economy. It has been estimated that, at the beginning of the industrial age in the mid-18th century, carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere were roughly 280 parts per million (ppm). By the end of 2022 they had risen to 419 ppm, and, if fossil fuels continue to be burned at current rates, they are projected to reach 550 ppm by the mid-21st century—essentially, a doubling of carbon dioxide concentrations in 300 years.

A vigorous debate is in progress over the extent and seriousness of rising surface temperatures, the effects of past and future warming on human life, and the need for action to reduce future warming and deal with its consequences. * COP26 అంటే ఏమిటి?

1992లో వాతావరణ మార్పులపై ఐక్యరాజ్యసమితి ఫ్రేమ్‌వర్క్ కన్వెన్షన్ ఆన్ క్లైమేట్ చేంజ్ (UNFCCC- యూఎన్‌ఎఫ్‌సీసీసీ) అనే అంతర్జాతీయ ఒప్పందానికి దేశాలు అంగీకరించాయి. యూఎన్‌ఎఫ్‌సీసీసీ వాతావరణ మార్పులను ఎదుర్కోవడంలో ప్రపంచ సహకారం కోసం ప్రాథమిక నియమాలు, అంచనాలను ఏర్పాటు చేసింది. వాతావరణ మార్పులకు గ్లోబల్ వార్మింగ్‌ (global warming)యే కారణమని.. ఈ గ్లోబల్ వార్మింగ్‌ గ్రీన్‌హౌస్ వాయు ఉద్గారాల వల్ల తలెత్తుతుందని.. అందుకే వీటిని నియంత్రించాల్సిన అవసరం ఉందని చాలా దేశాలు 1992లో అధికారికంగా గుర్తించాయి. 2015లో దేశాలు పారిస్ వాతావరణ ఒప్పందంపై సంతకం చేసినప్పటి నుంచి ఆ ఒప్పందం ఎప్పటికప్పుడు అప్‌డేట్ అవుతోంది.

ఆ ఒప్పందం విపత్తు వాతావరణ మార్పులను (Climate changes) నివారించడానికి గ్లోబల్ వార్మింగ్‌ను 2 డిగ్రీల సెల్సియస్ (3.6 F) లేదా అంతకన్నా తక్కువ 1.5 C (2.7 F)కి పరిమితం చేయాలని లక్ష్యంగా పెట్టుకుంది. యునైటెడ్ కింగ్‌డమ్, ఇటలీతో భాగస్వామ్యమై అక్టోబర్ 31 నుంచి నవంబర్ 12, 2021 వరకు స్కాట్లాండ్‌లోని గ్లాస్గోలో COP26ని నిర్వహిస్తోంది.

* ఐక్యరాజ్య సమితి (UN) సమావేశమైన COP26లో ఏం జరగబోతోంది?

సమావేశం మొదటి రోజుల్లో యూఎస్ అధ్యక్షుడు జో బైడెన్ వంటి 120 మంది దేశాధినేతలు.. వారి ప్రతినిధులు వాతావరణ మార్పులను తగ్గించడానికి తమ రాజకీయ నిబద్ధతను తెలుపుకోవడానికి సమావేశమవుతారు. దేశాధినేతలు వెళ్లిపోయాక పర్యావరణ మంత్రుల నేతృత్వంలోని దేశ ప్రతినిధుల బృందాలు కొత్త ప్రతిజ్ఞలు చేయడానికి.. కొత్త కార్యక్రమాలలో చేరడానికి ఈవెంట్స్ (Events), ఎక్స్చేంజ్ లలో పాల్గొంటారు. అలాగే కొత్త బాధ్యతలను స్వీకరిస్తారు. ప్రభుత్వేతర సంస్థలు, వ్యాపార నాయకులు కూడా ఈ సమావేశంలో పాల్గొంటారు. అడవులు, వ్యవసాయం మొదలైనవాటిపై వాతావరణం మార్పులు ఎంత ప్రభావం చూపుతున్నాయో చర్చిస్తారు. ఈ సమావేశం అనేది అన్ని దేశాలు అంగీకరించిన ఒక తుది నిర్ణయంతో ముగుస్తుంది.

Certain rules should also govern industrialization. Building industries in green zones that affect plants and species should be prohibited.

Global warming is a real problem that many people want to disprove to gain political advantage. However, as global citizens, we must ensure that only the truth is presented in the media.

This decade has seen a significant impact from global warming. The two most common phenomena observed are glacier retreat and arctic shrinkage. Glaciers are rapidly melting. These are clear manifestations of climate change.

ప్రాచీన సంస్కృతులన్నీ ప్రకృతిని ఆరాధిస్తూనే పెరగాయి. చెట్లు, నదులు, పర్వతాలు, ప్రకృతి వీటన్నింటిని ఎల్లప్పుడూ పూజించారు. మన దేశంలో ఒక చెట్టును నరికేముందు ఐదు మొక్కలు నాటడం ఆచారంగా ఉండేది. అన్ని ముఖ్యమైన పండుగలు, సంప్రదాయాలలో నీరు ముఖ్యమైన పాత్ర పోషిస్తూ వచ్చింది. నదులను తల్లులుగా, భూమని దేవతగా కొలిచిన దేశం మనది. ప్రకృతిని పవిత్రంగా భావించి, ఆరాధించి, గౌరవించే ఈ సంప్రదాయాన్ని ఈనాటి నవీన సమాజంలో మరలా ప్రారంభించాల్సి ఉంది. వినూత్న విధానాలలో నీటిని పొదుపు చేయడం, రసాయనాలు వాడకుండా వ్యవసాయం చేయడం మొదలైనవి తెలియజెప్పాలి. నదులను పునరుజ్జీవింప చేయడం, మొక్కలు పెంచడం, వ్యర్థాలు ఏమాత్రం ఉత్పత్తి చేయని జీవన విధానాలను అవలంభించడం వంటి విషయాలలో సమాజంలోని అందరినీ ముఖ్యంగా యువతను భాగస్వాములు చేయాల్సిన అవసరం ఉంది. ఆర్ట్ ఆఫ్ లివింగ్ చేపట్టిన 27 నదుల పునరుజ్జీవ కార్యక్రమం సమాజంలోని అందరి భాగస్వామ్యంతో మాత్రమే మాత్రమే సాధ్యమైంది.

నిజం చెప్పాలంటే మనిషిలోని దురాశే కాలుష్యానికి మూల కారణం. తక్కువ కాలంలో ఎక్కువ లాభాలు సంపాదించాలనే దురాశ పర్యావరణాన్ని ఛిద్రం చేస్తోంది. భౌతికింగా కాలుష్యాన్ని సృష్టించడమే కాక, వ్యతిరేక భావాలను సృష్టించడం ద్వారా మానసిక ఆరోగ్యాన్ని పాడు చేస్తోంది. మానవులలోని ఈ మనస్తత్వాన్ని, ఈ సమస్యకు మూల కారణాన్ని మనం సరిదిద్దాల్సిన అవసరం ఉంది.

సాంకేతికాభివృద్ధి జరిగినప్పుడు పర్యావరణం నాశనమవుతుందనే తప్పనిసరి నిబంధన ఏమీ లేదు. టెక్నాలజీ (సాంకేతికత) గాని, విజ్ఞానశాస్త్రం గానీ చెత్తను సృష్టించవు. కానీ ఆ సాంకేతికతను, విజ్ఞానాన్ని వాడి మనం చేసే పనులు చెత్తను సృష్టిస్తున్నాయి. కాబట్టి ఆ చెత్తను తిరిగి వాడుకునే విధానాలను, చెత్తను ఉత్పత్తి చేయని సరికొత్త సాంకేతికతను అభివృద్ధి చేసి వాడుకోవాలి. సౌరశక్తి, సహజ వ్యవసాయ పద్ధతులు వీటికి ఉదాహరణ.

ప్రకృతి వనరులను వాడుకోవడం ద్వారా ప్రజలకు విజ్ఞానాన్ని, సౌఖ్యాన్ని అందించడం సాంకేతికత ఉద్దేశ్యం. ఆధ్యాత్మికత, మానవ విలువలను మరిచిపోయినప్పుడు అదే సాంకేతికత, సుఖానికి బదులుగా వినాశనాన్ని, కాలుష్యాన్ని ఉత్పత్తి చేస్తుంది. క్షమ, సహనం, అందరి బాగోగులు కోరుకుంటూ పని చేయడం వంటి లక్షణాలు అలవర్చుకున్నప్పుడు మన చుట్టూ ఉన్న వాతావరణానికీ మనకూ ఒక ఆత్మీయ అనుబంధం ఏర్పడుతుంది. అప్పుడు పర్యావరణం గురించి శ్రద్ధ తీసుకోగలుగుతాం. అందుకే పర్యావరణ పరిరక్షణ ఉద్యమాలలో ఆధ్యాత్మిక వికాసం ఒక ముఖ్యమైన భాగమని నేను భావిస్తాను.

మనిషి తెలుసుకోగలికే అనుభవాలలో తనకూ, తన చుట్టూ ఉన్న పర్యావరణానికి గల సంబంధం మొట్టమొదటిదని మన ప్రాచీన ఆధ్యాత్మిక జ్ఞానం చెబుతున్నది. మన చుట్టూ ఉన్న వాతావరణం స్వచ్ఛంగా, సకారాత్మకంగా ఉన్నప్పుడు, ఆ అనుభూతి మన జీవితంలోని అన్ని పార్శ్వాలలోనూ ప్రసవించి వాటిని ప్రభావితం చేస్తుంది. మానవుల మనస్తత్వానికి ప్రకృతితో గాఢమైన చారిత్రాత్మకమైన అనుబంధం ఉంది. ఎప్పుడైతే మనం ప్రకృతితో ఉన్న అనుబంధం నుంచి దూరంగా వెళ్లడం మొదలైంది, అప్పుడే కాలుష్యాన్ని పుట్టించడం, పర్యావరణాన్ని నాశనం చేయడం మొదలైంది.

ప్రకృతితో మనిషికి గల ఈ అనుబంధాన్ని మళ్లీ చిగురింప చేయాలి. మన మనస్తత్వాన్ని, అనూచానంగా వస్తున్న పద్ధతులను పైకి తీసి మరలా పాటించాలి. భూమిని పవిత్రంగా పూజించడం, చెట్లను, నదులను పవిత్రంగా ఆరాధించడం, ప్రజలందరినీ పవిత్రంగా భావించి ఆరాధించడం ప్రకృతిలో దైవాన్ని చూడటం అలవాటుగా చేయాలి. అది మనలో సున్నితత్వాన్ని పెంచుతుంది. సున్నితత్వమైన మనిషి ప్రకృతి పట్ల తగిన జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకోకుండా, పర్యావరణాన్ని పెంపొందించకుండా ఉండలేడు.

వీటన్నింటికి మించి, మనం మన ప్రపంచాన్ని విశాలదృష్టితో చూడాల్సిన అవసముంది. మానసికమైన ఒత్తిడి లేకుండా, ఒక అందమైన ప్రపంచాన్ని సృష్టించాలనే సదాశయంతో మనం సాగాలి. అది జరగాలంటే మానవ చైతన్యం దురాశ, స్వలాభం కోసం ఇతరులను వంచించే విధానాలను దాటి ఉన్నతంగా ఎదగాలి. మానసికమైన ఈ ఎదుగుదల ఆధ్యాత్మికత ద్వారా సాధ్యమవుతుంది. అది మన యొక్క అసలైన స్వభావాన్ని, మనకు మనతో, ఇతరులతో, పర్యావరణంతో గల అనుబంధాలను తెలుసుకునేలా చేస్తుంది. ఆధ్యాత్మికత అనేది మనలోని చైతన్యాన్ని ఉన్నతస్థాయికి తీసుకు వెళ్లి, పర్యావరణ వినాశనానికి కారణమవుతున్న అసూయ అనే గుణాన్ని తొలగించి వేస్తుంది. భూప్రపంచం అంతటినీ రక్షించగలిగే దృక్పథాన్ని మనలో కలిగిస్తుంది. శాస్త్ర సాంకేతిక విజ్ఞానాలను అభివృద్ధి చేసుకుంటూనే పర్యావరణంతో సమతుల్యాన్ని పాటించడమే ఈ శతాబ్దపు సవాల్. ఆధ్యాత్మిక విలువలను పెంపొందించడం ఒక్కటే ఈ సవాలును అధిగమించడానికి, సమతుల్యాన్ని సాధించడానికి మనకు ఉన్న మార్గం.

What is Global Warming?

Global Warming is a long-term increase in average global temperature. It is considered a natural phenomenon, but anthropogenic activities on earth, particularly post Industrial Revolution , have led to an increase in the rate of this temperature increase. Various Reports published by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have time and again highlighted that since 1850 human activities have led to an increase of about 1 degree Celsius in average global temperature. Most of this warming has taken place in the second half of the 20th century. The fact that 5 of the hottest recorded year have occurred since 2015 can help us better understand the calamitous impact of anthropogenic activities.

Global Warming Causes

Green House Gases also known as GHGs in the atmosphere trap the solar radiations that are reflected by the earth’s surface. Under normal circumstances, most of these radiations escape into outer space. However, the release of GHGs by anthropogenic activities has increased their concentration in the atmosphere. Thus, the earth is getting hotter and hotter. 

Some of the common GHGs include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and water vapour, among others. The global warming potential of each GHG is different. For example, methane has a 25-time warming potential than carbon dioxide. Similarly, nitrous oxide has more than 250 times the warming potential than carbon dioxide. The top  anthropogenic activities that are responsible for the release of GHGs are shown below.

Global Warming and Green House Effect

Both phenomena are related to each other. Green House Gases also known as GHGs in the atmosphere trap the solar radiations that are reflected by the earth’s surface. Under normal circumstances, most of these radiations escape into outer space. However, the release of GHGs by anthropogenic activities has increased their concentration in the atmosphere. This is the primary cause of Global Warming . 

Global Warming Effects

Increase in the average temperature of the earth.

According to IPCC reports, human-induced global warming is responsible for nearly 1 degree Celsius temperature rise vis a vis pre-industrial level. Data from NASA suggest that 2016 has been the hottest year on record.

Frequency of Extreme Weather Events is Increasing

Across the globe, extreme weather events have increased in occurrence. For example, forest fires in California have become an annual event. Also, it is increasing in frequency each year. Most recently, we have recorded the phenomena of heat waves in Antarctica. The intensity of cyclones in the Bay of Bengal region has increased. Similarly, the frequency of occurrence of El Niño and La Niña has reduced from once in 8–10 years to once in 3–4 years now. More frequent episodes of floods and drought are being recorded every year across the world.

Melting of Ice

According to IPCC, there is 10% less permafrost in North Hemisphere at present compared to the 1900s. Remote sensing data suggest Arctic ice is melting fast. Experts suggest that not only will the sea level rise with the melting of glaciers, but there is also a danger of new bacteria and viruses being released into the environment which has so far been trapped in ice sheets. This may lead to outbreaks of disease and pandemics which are beyond the control of human medical sciences.

Sea Level Rise and Acidification of Ocean

A report published by WMO, suggests that the rate of sea level rise has doubled for the period between 2013 and 2021 compared to the rate for the period between 1993 and 2002. Earth scientists are suggesting that if this phenomenon continues, many human-inhabited coastal areas will be submerged into the sea in the coming decades. Also, with the concentration of carbon dioxide rising in the atmosphere, oceans are absorbing more of it. This is leading to ocean acidification. The impact of this phenomenon can be disastrous for ocean biodiversity, particularly the coral reefs. 

Adverse Impact on Terrestrial Ecosystems of the Earth

It has been recorded that many flora and fauna species are heading northwards in Northern Hemisphere. Significant changes have been observed in the migratory movements of birds across the world. Early arrival to their summer feeding and breeding grounds is quite evident. Expert biologists suggest that rising temperatures in the tropical and subtropical regions may lead to an outbreak of new diseases, which in turn may render many floral and faunal species extinct.

Social and Economic Impact

A rising number of extreme weather events will have an adverse impact on agriculture and fisheries. Rising global temperatures will have a negative impact on the productivity of human beings, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions of the earth. The impact on life and livelihoods of indigenous people across the world will be even more pronounced. 

Global Warming Solutions

Global cooperation for reduction of emissions.

It is time that the target of containing the global average temperature rise within 1.5 degrees Celsius of pre-industrial levels is taken seriously. Also, global efforts should be based on a spirit of Common But Differentiated Responsibility. This will ensure that historical injustices done to the global south are duly acknowledged, and they have an equal chance to transform themselves into developed countries. Countries must act proactively to achieve Net Zero Emission status at the earliest. 

Transition to Cleaner and Greener Forms of Energy

Thermal power plants based on coal should be made more efficient and inefficient ones should be phased off. Also, mass adoption of renewable forms of energy like solar should be promoted. Similarly, avenues for using hydrogen as energy fuel should be looked into. We must also explore the possibility of Nuclear fusion for energy generation, in addition to making nuclear fission-based energy generation safer.

Changes in Agricultural Practices and Land Use

Agriculture based on the use of nitrogenous fertilizers must be replaced with organic farming techniques. Also, methane gas released from agricultural and cattle waste must be trapped as biogas for domestic usage. Massive afforestation drives must be organized. Urban governments must make it a point to include green spaces in urban planning.

Improving Transportation System

The advent of E-vehicles is a welcome change, but we need to make the batteries used in these vehicles more efficient. Urban planners must make public transportation systems inherent as a benchmark of good urban planning. Also, urban planning should be such that it promotes more walking and cycling habits among the residents. 

Behavioural Changes

All the above discussions will have no meaning if we as individuals are not sensitive enough. We need to make reducing, reusing and recycling a mantra of our living. It should be our civic duty to save water, and wildlife and raise awareness among others. 

Solar Geoengineering

Solar geoengineering, a proposed climate intervention method, aims to counteract global warming by reflecting a portion of the sun’s rays back into space. One prominent approach involves injecting substances like sulphur dioxide into the upper atmosphere to create reflective aerosols. These particles can scatter sunlight, reducing the Earth’s temperature. However, solar geoengineering is a topic of debate, with concerns about its side effects, such as disrupted weather patterns and potential geopolitical risks. Research in this field is ongoing, but it remains a theoretical concept with limited practical implementation.

Can Solar Geoengineering Halt Global Warming?

Solar geoengineering, specifically solar radiation management (SRM), is under scrutiny as a potential method to mitigate global warming. SRM involves reflecting sunlight away from Earth, often by injecting substances like sulphur dioxide into the upper atmosphere to create reflective aerosols. However, its effectiveness remains a subject of debate, with concerns about potential side effects and ethical implications. While research in this field is ongoing, solar geoengineering is currently in a theoretical stage, with limited practical implementation.
