16 December 2014: Black day in Pakistan's history

16 December 2014: Black day in Pakistan's history

The month of December reminds us of the Army Public School misfortune that took place in Peshawar. This day holds a special place in the hearts of every Pakistani, but for all the wrong reasons. On this 'Black Day' more than 144 people, including innocent children, were gunned down by the monsters disguised in human attire, who did not to think for a second before killing a child.

Now, four years have gone by since the APS incident, but still the catastrophe was unforgettable. Even though today whenever we watch those clips and glimpses of that atrocious attack on our television, we still get goosebumps as we cannot even imagine or begin to understand the depressed conditions of the mothers of those martyred children.

We cannot even fathom the feeling the mothers must be going through when their children were snatched from their lap by extremists. It was one of the most horrific days in the history of Pakistan when the terrorists opened fire on the defenseless little angles who would have never, even in their wildest imaginations, would have thought that they would be victims to such an attack.

Afghanistan behind recent terror wave in Pakistan: Khawaja Asif

The images of those bloodied classrooms and uniforms clearly depicted the helpless situation of the people who had faced that terror. The entire nation remembers the martyrs of Army Public School and empathized with their families. They will always remain in our hearts.

We have not wasted the blood of martyrs, as we salute them for their courage and braveness and prayed to Allah Almighty that may the world never have to witness a day like this again.

The government and the people of Pakistan, along with the Kashmiri population, observed the 76th anniversary of Indian troops' landing in Jammu and Kashmir as a solemn 'Black Day.'

On this occasion, the president, prime minister, and foreign minister reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering moral, diplomatic, and political support for the Kashmir cause.

They emphasized the critical need to address India's illegal and unilateral actions of August 5, 2019, which have initiated a process aimed at altering the demographic structure and political landscape of the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

The foreign minister sent letters to the President of the UN General Assembly, the President of the UN Security Council, the UN Secretary-General, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to inform them of the latest situation in IIOJK.

In these letters, the foreign minister called for the implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions, allowing the people of Jammu and Kashmir to determine their own future.

Across the country, various activities such as public rallies, seminars, webinars, panel discussions, and photo exhibitions were organized to commemorate the 'Black Day.' Additionally, Pakistan's diplomatic missions worldwide arranged special events with the active participation of Pakistani and Kashmiri diaspora to raise global awareness regarding India's prolonged occupation of Jammu and Kashmir.

Over 100, including 84 children, were killed when terrorists took hundreds of students and teachers hostage on Tuesday in the Army Public School in the city of Peshawar. The attack was claimed by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

This deadly and tragic incident has once again raised questions on the state of security and maintenance of law and order in the country.

Attacking Army Public School is believed to be a reaction to the army's ongoing Operation Zarb-i-Azb in the country's tribal areas which is aimed at wiping out terrorists and their sanctuaries.

Here's how politicians and journalists reacted to the attack:

Questions over security and state of law enforcement

Although Operation Zarb-i-Azb is under way to rid the country of terrorists, the latest attack raises questions on the state of preparedness of law enforcement agencies to deal with what is being regarded as a blowback from the ongoing offensive in North Waziristan.

Senior journalist Talat Hussain lamented the security situation, saying terrorists appear to have no difficulties in attacking anyone, anywhere.

Appeals for unity

Calls are being made not to use the tragedy for politicking and that it was time for everyone to stand together and put aside differences.

Author Bina Shah has implored political stakeholders to keep score-settling at a distance.

Calls for continuing Zarb-i-Azb

With the latest attack, there are calls for continuing with Zarb-i-Azb. Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Dr Tahirul Qadri and Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Sumeta Syed have in their reactions to the attack in Peshawar said that the operation should not be stopped until its aims are accomplished.

Terrorism in the name of religion condemnable

More condemnations of the attack have come from politicians saying using religion for attacking defenceless children was condemnable and a brutal and inhumane thing to do.

Jamaat-i-Islami's Karachi Emir Naeemur Rehman condemned the attack on behalf of his party.

International condemnation

British Prime Minister David Cameron has condemned the attack and expressed deep shock at the tragedy.

Indian premier Narendra Modi calls the attack on Army Public School, senseless, unspeakable brutality.

Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh says the attack, one of the bloodiest in Pakistan in recent years, exposes the “real face of terrorism”.

What to know about Day of Visibility, designed to show the world ‘trans joy’

Sunday is International Transgender Day of Visibility, observed around the world to bring attention to a population that’s often ignored, disparaged or victimized.

Here are things to know about the day.

WHAT IS IT?

The “day” is Sunday, but celebrations and educational events designed to bring attention to transgender people are occurring for several days around March 31.

Events were scheduled around the world and include panels and speakers in Cincinnati and Atlanta, marches in Melbourne, Florida and Philadelphia, and an inclusive roller derby league’s game on New York’s Long Island. A picnic is planned in the English town of Hitchin.

Perhaps the highest profile U.S. event is a rally scheduled for Sunday on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Major buildings and landmarks across the U.S. will be lit up in pink, white and light blue to mark the day. Last year , those lit included New York’s One World Trade Center and Niagara Falls.

HOW DID IT BEGIN?

Rachel Crandall-Crocker, the executive director and co-founder of Transgender Michigan, organized the first day in 2009.

“I think that once a person understands us, it’s hard to discriminate against us,” she said in an interview. “I created it because I wanted a time that we don’t have to be so lonely. I wanted a day that we’re all together all over the world as one community. And that’s exactly what we are.”

It was designed as a contrast to Transgender Day of Remembrance , which is held annually on Nov. 20 to honor the memory of of transgender people who were killed in anti-transgender violence .

Crandall-Crocker selected the day at the end of March to give it space from the day of remembrance and Pride Month in June, which celebrates all types of LGBTQ+ people.

She plans to take part in a rally in Lansing, Michigan.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Transgender people have become more visible in public life in the U.S. and elsewhere.

There also has been a backlash from conservatives officials. At least 11 states have adopted policies barring people from using the bathrooms aligning with their gender in schools or other public buildings, 25 have bans on transgender women and/or girls competing in sports for women or girls and more than 20 have adopted bans on gender-affirming health care for minors. Some of the policies have been put on hold by courts.

Nico Lang, author of “American Teenager: How Trans Kids are Surviving Hate and Finding Joy in a Turbulent Era,” which is scheduled to be published later this year, said it’s important to find happiness even amid the political tumult.

“I feel like we as people — all of us queer people, trans people — are trying to assert our humanity right now,” said Lang, who uses they/them pronouns.

They said the day of visibility is powerful because it’s not just on social media but also in real life with rallies and potluck meals.

“It’s just us living our lives,” they said.

Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and across the world will observe October 27 as Black Day to convey a strong message to the world that they reject illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir by India.

It was on 27th October in 1947 when Indian troops had invaded Jammu and Kashmir and occupied it in total violation of the Partition Plan of the subcontinent and against the Kashmiris’ aspirations.

Call for observance of the day has been given by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference. The APHC has also appealed for complete shutdown in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

The APHC in a statement in Srinagar called upon the international community to wake up from deep slumber and take practical steps to hold a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir as per the UN Security Council resolutions to enable the Kashmiris exercise their right to self-determination.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference leaders have said that India has been engaged in the genocide of the Kashmiri people since 1947 when it illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir through fraud and force.

Posters appeared in Srinagar and other parts of occupied Kashmir, urging people to observe shutdown on Friday against the illegal occupation of their motherland by India.

The posters have also been shared on social media platforms including X, Facebook and WhatsApp.

Meanwhile, the APHC-AJK Convener, Mehmood Ahmed Saghar, in a statement in Islamabad said that India created hurdles in the implementation of the plebiscite by refusing to withdraw its troops from the occupied territory.
