A favourite Place is one where a person enjoys spending the majority of their time. Each person has a different favourite place. The only place we can go to forget all of our sorrow. It depends on what they like and are interested in. Here are a few sample essays on my favourite place.

Each of us has a favourite location where we can find fulfilment and happiness. I also have a favourite place where I enjoy spending the majority of my time. My house is where I like to be. I enjoy spending my time there. It has a lovely and tranquil environment. My house is in the centre of a city. I live with my mother, father, two brothers, and two sisters. We each have our room. There isn't a place more significant than my house, in my opinion. I enjoy being at home. It energises me and lifts my spirits. Whenever I'm at home, I enjoy myself.

200 Words Essay On My Favourite Place

Everybody has a favourite location, such as a garden, a house, a playground, etc. My hometown, though, is my favourite place, and I love being in my home.

My Hometown

My town is my entire world. I was raised there. I have a lot of lovely and endearing memories of it. I used to play there with my friends and cousins during my early years. In my community, everyone is cordial. My town has many trees. I can only think of one spot where I enjoy spending time - my town. My visits home provide me with much delight and satisfaction. In my town, practically every amenity is available, and the roads and bridges are macadamized.

Additionally, the community has access to medical facilities. The local government also provides excellent maintenance for the public transportation system. In my community, emphasis is placed primarily on education. Everyone wants access to high-quality education, regardless of gender. The neighbourhood helps out with the needs of poor kids. I hold this place- My Town, in high regard.

Everyone has a distinct favourite location. It is in keeping with their preferences and interests. Similarly, my favourite location reflects my interests, and I love being at my favourite place.

500 Words Essay On My Favourite Place

My grandmother's house in my village has often been one of my favourite places to be. Everyone has always held a special place in their hearts for their grandmother's home. We spent numerous summers with our granny when we were younger. Her home appeared to stand out from the rest in some way that made it special.

Enjoyment time

I enjoy playing outside while picking fresh fruits from the trees and eating freshly prepared vegetables. Frequently, I help my grandmother sow seeds in the garden. There are several reasons why I value this place so highly. There is something incredibly unique about the house. I feel at ease and relaxed here.

Why I Love My Grandmother’s House

First of all, the atmosphere at my grandmother’s house is distinctly different. I am at peace here. There is no noise or pollution because it is in a village. Additionally, there are no traffic jams here. I always wake early so that I can go for a walk and take in some fresh air. My body and mind are both revitalised by the fresh air. My grandmother makes me a delicious breakfast. In the evening, my whole family gathers to share our life stories as our grandfather makes tea.

My grandparents' home also has a small garden with grass that is a vibrant green colour. In the garden, there are swings as well. There, we also like playing entertaining games with our relatives, including water fights. We frequently spend the evenings sitting on the roof, looking up at the stars.

Holidays At Grandmother’s House

Over the holidays, there is always a lot of laughing and playing games at grandma’s house. Uncle's loud, recognisable giggle may be heard for miles. My aunt never misses an opportunity to comment on his laughter. The living room of our grandmother's home is where she regularly can be seen sitting and gazing out the window, close to the front entrance. She sits at this location to read the newspaper daily and sip on her old-fashioned steaming black coffee.

She can lose hours watching the birds fly to the feeder next to the window in her living room. Most birds have names that our grandmother is familiar with and recognises. She never skips a chance to observe the squirrels. Everything blossoms, and there are fresh flowers everywhere throughout the summer. In our town, the natural beauty is at an all-time high, and it's impossible to keep your eyes off the stunning surroundings. A pond is located behind the house. My cousins and I go fishing in the pond.

The village's residents lead simple, healthy lives. People care for one another and are always available. They make a lot of effort to maintain the facility's cleanliness because they care about it. We always look forward to our summer vacation so we may visit Grandma and Grandpa. Anyone who has met them will attest to their humility. All of this adds up to why I love my grandparents house and why it is my favourite place.

Guide to the best places to visit in Kathmandu, Nepal

KATHMANDU IS THE CAPITAL CITY of Nepal, and the city with the only international airport, too. Kathmandu is in a valley, surrounded by mountains, with the soaring white peaks of the Himalayan range in the distance. While Nepal is known for adventure travel, mountaineering, and trekking, Kathmandu is a historic and cultural city in its own right, with many fascinating neighbourhoods and tourist attractions. You don’t have to climb Mount Everest to enjoy a trip to Kathmandu and Nepal! In this Guide to the best places to visit in Kathmandu, I hope to share some of the things I truly love about this city.

I’ve been to Kathmandu four times, and it was the fourth visit that completely won me over. After seeing so many different places to visit in Kathmandu, the city stole my heart, as did Nepal. Nepal is one of my favourite countries for several reasons that include the warm and open people, the interesting history and culture, the harmonious mix of Hinduism and Buddhism, and of course the incredible natural beauty. As home to many of the world’s highest mountains, including number one, Mount Everest — which is known in Nepal as Sagarmatha and in Tibetan as Chomolungma — Nepal has magnificent vistas and large regions of wilderness that are largely untouched.

On my fourth visit to Kathmandu, I started to uncover a different side of Nepal and had the chance to experience wellness and spirituality. At Avata wellness centre , in the heart of the city, I found a serene and peaceful garden surrounded by a health food cafe, a spacious and sunny Yogashala, and a luxurious spa. I would consider Avata one of the best places to visit in Kathmandu.

This inspiring visit to Avata began to open up the spiritual side of Nepal for me, and I hope to continue to explore it. The Himalayan mountain range that runs through Nepal gives the country a reputation for being mystical, rugged, and remote. The Himalaya is the birthplace of Yoga, the home of Shiva, the destination of one of the holiest of all pilgrimages — Mount Kailash — and the location of mythical Shangri-la, a utopia among the peaks. Many stories of bravery, courage, and hardship spring from here, both known and untold. While many are drawn by the magnetism of Mount Everest, there is much, much more to explore in Nepal. Even in Kathmandu itself, there are many spiritual places to visit.

In this post I asked some of the my friends — travellers, bloggers, and photographers — to tell me their favourite places to visit in Kathmandu. My favourite neighbourhoods are Boudhanath, Bhaktapur, and Patan. And I also enjoy visiting the centre of Kathmandu — Durbar Square, Freak Street, and Thamel. On a day-long walking tour I did with Kalpana of Royal Mountain Travel , we covered many of these places.

From the UNESCO website: “These monument zones are the Durbar squares or urban centres with their palaces, temples and public spaces of the three cities of Kathmandu (Hanuman Dhoka), Patan, and Bhaktapur, and the religious ensembles of Swayambhu, Boudhanath, Pashupati, and Changu Narayan. The religious ensemble of Swayambhu includes the oldest Buddhist monument (a stupa) in the Valley; that of Boudhanath includes the largest stupa in Nepal; Pashupati has an extensive Hindu temple precinct, and Changu Narayan comprises traditional Newari settlement, and a Hindu temple complex with one of the earliest inscriptions in the Valley from the fifth century AD.”

I’ve been to most of these as they are within a relatively small region, and they are amazing to experience. I particularly love the Durbar Squares in central Kathmandu (properly known as Hanuman Dhoka, after the royal palace), Patan, and Bhaktapur.

The Durbar squares of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur are living history, the site of priceless monuments, gilded with antiquity and reverence – and yet they are pulsing with life, just as relevant today as when they were built. The temples are open and in daily use, and the squares throng with tourists, pilgrims, and locals. The squares especially come alive during celebrations, festivals, and rituals when people pour in to celebrate centuries old traditions.

There is an entrance fee for each of these monument sites, which is much higher for foreigners than for locals or citizens of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries.

Kathamandu (Hanuman Dhoka) Durbar Square

In the heart of Kathmandu is a complex of palaces, monuments, shrines, and temples, both Hindu and Buddhist, that make up the area known as Kathmandu Durbar Square. It’s also known as Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square after a Hanuman statue that adorns one of the palaces — and it is most definitely one of the best places to visit in Kathmandu — in fact, it cannot be missed.

Once a royal residence, this is the cultural centre of the city, and it’s a fascinating area to wander, a living museum of antiquities, many built between the 12th and 18th centuries – but the origins of the square go back much, much further in time.

Until the early 20th century, Durbar Square was the home of Nepal’s royal family, and the place where coronations were held. The Royal Palace was largely constructed in the 17th century, but has been renovated many times.

Within Durbar Square, there are several inner squares, and many different chowks, courtyards, and temple compounds as well – it is an area rich in priceless antiquities. Many important festivals are held here, and people stream in from all over the city and the country to celebrate in Kathmandu Durbar Square.

Wear comfortable shoes, bring a bottle of water, and spend the day wandering in Kathmandu Durbar Square. There’s so much to see! When you get hungry, find the cafes that line one side of the open square near the Site Office, at the start of Freak Street. From a rooftop cafe or coffee house, you can get a great view of the area.

Bhaktapur was the capital of Nepal until the 15th century, and it remains an important cultural centre and a living museum of Newari culture. Known in Newari as Khwopa, Bhaktapur is an area of about seven square kilometres, about 15 kilometres outside of Kathmandu.

Bhaktapur is architecturally stunning, with beautiful pagoda-style temples, Buddhist stupas, and palaces around every corner. It really has to be seen to be believed! And it is just as rich in intangible history as it is in buildings, gates, monuments, and houses. Bhaktapur is alive with locals, pilgrims, and tourists and the site of many traditional festivals.

Within the area of the city, there are four important squares: Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, Pottery Square, and Dattatraya Square. Each is fascinating in its own way. Dattatreya Square is the oldest part of the city, and features the oldest temple. Both Durbar Square and Taumadhi Square are spectacular to behold.

In Durbar Square you will find stone sculpture masterpieces, the Golden Gate and and 55 Windows Palace, replicas of Char Dham temples, erotic wood carvings, and the National Art Galllery. In Taumadhi Square there are several multi-roofed pagoda-style temples, stone sculptures, and a water tank / well with carved spouts.

Bhaktapur is known for pottery, handicrafts, black caps, black sarees with red borders and Juju Dhau , a thick, sweet yoghurt that is not to be missed! You can easily make a day of exploring this amazing area, where Hinduism and Buddhism harmoniously blend, and the past is alive in well-maintained buildings and ongoing traditions.

Or, you can stay in a local guest house in Bhaktapur and immerse totally in the evocative atmosphere of this ancient city.

Taleju Temple, Patan Durbar Square, Kathmandu

It might be the smallest of the three Durbar Squares (erstwhile kingdoms of Nepal) but Patan Durbar Square is the most artistic of them all. Every structure, intact or in ruins, is a testament to the stunning Newari craftsmanship. The UNESCO World Heritage site has lots of ancient temples, the royal residence of Malla kings, and a well-curated museum that offers you glimpses of artefacts dating back to the 7th century.

Hidden within the royal palace are two of my favourite structures: the stunning bronze statues of Ganga and Yamuna in Mul Chowk, and the dazzling step well called Tushahiti in Sundari Chowk. The statues guard the entrance of the Taleju temple – the royal deity of the Malla Kings – and are almost life-sized. Tushahiti charmed me with its elaborate carvings, at the centre of which is a golden tap in the shape of Vishnu riding on Garuda. The step well was used for ceremonial baths by the royal family.

Patan Durbar Square has a plethora of secrets to be unravelled. One day is not nearly enough to discover them all. It is one of the very best places to visit in Kathmandu (and you can stay in one of the many charming guest houses or boutique hotels, too).

A trip to Nepal was on my bucket list for many years. Home to a centuries old culture and the highest mountains on the planet, the small Himalayan country long intrigued me. I spent 30 days in Nepal, with most of my time in Kathmandu.

One of my favourite things to do was to explore Thamel. A crowded commercial spot, with disorganized streets and narrow alleys, Thamel offers visitors a mix of religious monuments, magnificent temples, lively pubs, restaurants that serve delicious local cuisine, and shops filled with local handicrafts and artwork. In Thamel, you can walk for hours and have fun getting lost while you look for clothes, hiking gear, or bargains. Or, you can simply stroll and enjoy the people watching.

As Thamel is a touristy area, the prices are higher than in other areas of Kathmandu – so be prepared to bargain.

Thamel is a car-free area, so if you are not in a mood to walk, you can take a cycle rickshaw to get around. If you are not staying in the area, taxis are the easiest and quickest option to get to Thamel. I chose to stay in a hotel close to Thamel, so I could walk every morning to find a cosy and colourful café, and every evening to find a new amazing restaurant.

Boudhanath by Teja on the Horizon

I don’t know what possessed me to stay near Boudhanath instead of the more popular choice of Thamel when I was in Kathmandu. But I’m glad I did.

Boudhanath is a UNESCO site because of its stupa’s importance as a Buddhist pilgrimage destination in the Himalaya for hundreds of years. Aside from being among the largest in the world, I also found the stupa’s wisdom eyes fascinating.

The Boudhanath neighbourhood has a different character than the rest of Kathmandu. It has a peaceful vibe that I thoroughly enjoyed. The shops sell Tibetan artwork, souvenirs, and brightly coloured traditional Tibetan clothing, which the local women wear as the circle the stupa.

A constant flow of pilgrims walk or prostrate in circumambulation around the gleaming white stupa, chanting mantras as they go. The ring of multi-storey buildings that surround the stupa house Buddhist seminaries, monasteries, and vegetarian eateries. Some of the latter have rooftop access, where you can gaze out over the square and upon the enigmatic eyes of the stupa. After sunset, countless lamps gild the plaza in light.

As a pilgrimage and tourist attraction, it is easy to get dropped off at Boudhanath by taxi from Thamel . But it took me two tries to find it from where I was staying. The Boudha stupa, though massive, is nestled within a ring of buildings, and the passages into it from adjacent roads are not obvious.

The Kathmandu Valley is home to the Newars, a people said to be descended from the Kirat, the legendary People of the Himalaya. Living on the crossroads of ancient trading routes, a wide range of influences have mingled to create their unique culture. While Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur are well-visited Newar towns, Kirtipur is a delightfully small and lesser known Newar town, just on the outskirts of Kathmandu.

Kirtipur is easily accessible by bus in a half hour ride from Kathmandu’s Ratnapark bus station. It’s old town boasts tranquil lanes and the red-bricked, ornate buildings for which the Newars are famous. I was there for the Indrayani Jatra, Kirtipur’s most important festival during which the goddess Indrayani is taken from her shrine and carried around the streets by the men of Kirtipur.

After a lunch in Lahana Newa restaurant, where I was cajoled into trying the Newari favourite, sapumhicha (buffalo intestines stuffed with bone marrow), we tracked down the jatra. It was in full swing as sweating men charged around with Indrayani on a heavy, wooden chariot, and women circled with jugs of aaila (Newar rice whisky). Indrayani was eventually brought to the main square where the locals hustled to touch their head to her feet and make offerings of vegetables. The aaila flowed, prasads were thrown and the dancing continued all day.

Garden of Dreams The Garden of Dreams is an oasis within the chaos of downtown Kathmandu with its manicured lawns, ponds, and flora-arched walkways. There are even mats and cushions laid out for use, and you’re allowed to bring in your own drinks and picnic. It’s a lovely place to spend the afternoon; although expect to share the lawn with a few canoodling locals (it’s apparently the best place in town to bring a date).

Whilst we loved exploring the various sites of the city and wandering Thamel to stock up on important things like Spiderman woolly hats for our Himalayan trek, finding a green space in the city centre was a breath of fresh air (literally).

If you’re visiting Nepal with kids (it’s one of our favourite trips we’ve done with the kids), you will no doubt spend some time in Kathmandu and discover, as we did, that Garden of Dreams is perfect for kids. Entrance is 200 rupees for foreigners.

Best places to stay in Kathmandu

Kathmandu has many options when it comes to accommodation. There are luxury hotels, mid-range hotels, boutique hotels, guest houses, hostels, and home stays, and something for every budget. The city is spread out and transportation is not the best in Kathmandu, so I would suggest carefully choosing your area. Popular choices are Thamel (for backpackers), central Kathmandu, Patan, and Boudhanath.

I love the hotels owned and operated by Royal Mountain Travel. Traditional Comfort Boutique Hotel is in central Kathmandu — and yes it is both in a traditional style and very comfortable. And on a smaller scale, the charming and elegant Traditional Stay Hotel in Patan, which has a fantastic location very near Durbar Square.

In Thamel, I love Kathmandu Guest House, which has a large garden, many room choices, and a whole lot of history! The Kathmandu Guest House is one of those iconic hotels, legendary for both its place in local history and folklore, and for the people who have stayed there. Celebrating 50 years in 2018, it opened in Thamel in 1968 when the area was just farmer’s fields. The Thamel we know today, as the tourist hub of Kathmandu, grew up around the Kathmandu Guest House, and this was the place many writers, explorers, mountaineers, and celebrities stayed. Where to eat and drink in Kathmandu

There are lots of choices but when I was recently in Kathmandu, my favourite spot is Karma Coffee and HUB Boudha, run by my friends Birgit and Raj. Raj Gyawali is the founder fo the responsible tourism company Social Tours . HUB Boudha is a wonderful “concept space” with shady trees, outdoor seating and the amazing food, tea, and coffee of Karma Coffee. They go to great lengths to ensure the products are locally sourced and fair trade. And not only is everything fresh and delicious, they have gluten free options too, which I was worried I would not find in Nepal.

Travel Story - What an amazing trip I had

Nepal is perhaps one of the best countries that I have visited. It has everything, from amazing natural diversity, wildlife and cultural ethos to the awe-inspiring Himalayas. Nepal is a country of many wonders with treasures that never fail to amaze and inspire me. Recently, I had the chance to visit Nepal. As much as Nepal Treks are fun, this time- I wanted to really dive deep into the historical and cultural aspects of the country. After all, Nepal has ten UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and despite its growing modernization in places like its capital Kathmandu and other major cities, the tenor of cultural spirit is still alive and thriving in almost all corners of Nepal- sometimes even mingling along with the rapid growth of cities and their rapid in-migration. Speaking of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal is like any other, always bustling with life and energy and chaotic pandemonium. When I arrived at the Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu, I was greeted by my guide. I had decided to take the aid of a local Travel Agency who assisted me in my touring endeavor. Nepal Hiking Team my travel agency, had arranged for a guide for me to pick me up from the airport and with my Hotel transfer.

Going a little sideways with my continuality here, but I would definitely recommend hiring a local travel agency while visiting Nepal, especially if it is your first time. It can be a daunting task to visit a new country, and Nepal is no exception. That is why hiring a travel agency is always beneficial. They arrange everything for you, leaving you with free time to do as you please instead of worrying about permits, transport or even accommodation and meals. That was the case for me as well with Nepal Hiking Team, who arranged and planned my trip brilliantly.

First on my tour list was the heritage sites of Kathmandu itself. A bit about Kathmandu before we delve into its cultural and historical treasures; Kathmandu is the largest city of Nepal, with a population of about 1.5 million people. Historically termed as "Nepal Mandala", Kathmandu has been the home of Newari culture since medieval times. The Newari culture is definitely seen in various aspects f the city, from temples, architectural style of buildings, food and even celebrations and festivals. The historical sites of Kathmandu manifest the Newa architecture quite beautifully. Moreover, Kathmandu has been, for many years, the epicenter of the Himalayan country. It has a multiethnic population, and has many Buddhist and Hindu religious sites, including the heritage sites.

As such, the Kathmandu city hosts four major UNESCO Sites. In the Kathmandu Valley, there are a total of 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The UNESCO Sites are distributed among the valley closely to one another. That makes the Kathmandu valley have one of the densest concentrations of UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are situated alongside each other. Within the city itself, the four major sites are the temple of Pashupatinath, the Swayambhunath Stupa, the Bouddhanath and the Kathmandu Durbar Square.

My first site was the holy Hindu temple of Pashupatinath. A major sacred Hindu temple, Pashupatinath is located on the banks of the Baghmati River. My guide informed me that the temple served as a seat of the national deity, Lord Pashupatinath. Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list on 1979, Pashupatinath is a large complex with many smaller temples, ashrams and sculptures. When I visited Pashupatinath, I saw many worshippers about, many with bright red tika on their foreheads. My guide said that during the major festival of Maha Shivaratri, Pashupatinath Temple was swarmed by many pilgrims from all over the country, with many from India as well. I also saw many Sadhus in the temple, with their faces covered in ashes and donning bright yellow robes with matted hair. I was also informed that the temple is also where the Hindu people performed their sacred cremation ceremony by the banks of the river.

The pagoda style of the Pashupatinath temple is something that I was to come across many times during my tour. The beautifully crafted two level roofs of the temple are balanced on wooden rafters which are decorated with amazing carvings. With the atmosphere rich with burning incense, the temple was quite exotic and reflected the cultural beauty in the constant peal of its temple bells.

My next UNESCO Site was the Kathmandu Durbar Square. One of the three Durbar Squares of the Kathmandu valley, the Kathmandu Durbar Square holds the palaces of the old Malla and Shah Kings of the Kathmandu city, along with many temples, old buildings and monuments along with sculptures and statues of Gods. Several buildings of the Durbar square complex had collapsed in the 2015 earthquake, and the renovation work was being done. Along with the old buildings, the outskirt of the complex also held many fine cafes and restaurants. The place was as busy as ever, with small vendors selling spices and flowers and shops of Thanka paintings and Nepali handicrafts that ranged from brass and copper jewelry to traditional Newari masks and Nepali paper Mache. The complex itself was beautiful. Despite the damage done by the earthquake, it is easy to see the wonderful Nepali craftsmanship on the temples and buildings of the Durbar Square. The tentatively ornamented doors and windows of the temples and the finely tuned and crafted sculptures of the various gods seemed lively. It was not hard to imagine how it must have been in the medieval times. The openness of the complex and being surrounded by such majestic culture and architectural beauty had me in a trance. The people going about their way, with the looming temples and the giant statue of the God, with flocking pigeons and the bustling atmosphere seemed to breathe life into the area.

After a quick lunch of delicious momo in one of the many restaurants at the Durbar Square area, I headed out to the Swayambhunath temple- also known as "the Monkey temple", an ancient religious temple atop a hill west of the city. At the entrance of the temple, I saw three giant statues of Buddha, all decorated quite beautifully, along with gumbas and smaller stupas which were also quite elaborately decorated and painted in the most intricate colors. My guide told me that each morning before dawn, hundreds of Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims ascend the long steps from the eastern side that lead up the hill and begin a series of clockwise circumambulations of the Stupa. After I had climbed the steps up to the Stupa myself, I was rewarded with the most breathtaking sight of the panoramic city, which seemed to be alive.

After a tour of the temple complex, my next destination was the Bouddhanath Stupa. As I was in the car being driven to Bouddha, I also got a chance to experience the hectic traffic of the city; it truly is quite fascinating! Bouddhanath is the largest Buddhist Stupa in Nepal. When I reached Bouddhanath, the beautiful dome of the Stupa loomed up in front of me like a giant. The sire of the Stupa was decorated with many colorful prayer flags and the serene eyes of the Buddha looking out in four directions were quite majestic in the evening sun. The sparse distribution of the twilight clouds above the Stupa gave off a tranquil feel to the whole place. There were many people around here as well, sitting by on the base of the Stupa and enjoying the evening with family and friends. It was a lovely site to end my first day of the tour.

My tour of Nepal continued with my next destination- Pokhara. The lakeside city of Pokhara is said to be the tourism capital of Nepal, and it is not difficult to see how so. The city is located right next to the beautiful Phewa Lake, and is also quite close to the Annapurna Himalayan range whose majestic sights I saw as I entered the city. Many prefer to drive to the city, but my agency had arranged for a flight to Pokhara from Kathmandu, which took about 20 minutes.

Pokhara is often the starting point of many Annapurna Treks, and thus, you can see lots of tourists in the city, especially around the lakeside area which is riddled with various restaurants and shops catering to tourists. Furthermore, there are also numerous temples and gumbas in the city, with many temples serving as combined places of worship for both Hindus and Buddhists, much like the Swayambhunath in Kathmandu. One of the first places that I visited in Pokhara was the Bindhyabasini Temple, followed by the World Peace Pagoda, a.k.a. "the Shanti Stupa". I got a beautiful panoramic view of the Annapurna range, Pokhara city and Phewa Lake from the pagoda.

Pokhara had many attractions as well, like the Mahindra cave and the Davis Fall. The all natural setting of Pokhara contributed to its large influx of tourism, both from within the country and outside. During the evening, I leisurely strolled around the lake side area, enjoyed a tranquil boat ride on the lake and visited the Tal Barahi temple- which is located right in the centre of the Phewa Lake. I had the constant view of the Annapurna range, and the beauty of Pokhara lulled me into a beautiful expectation of visiting Sarangkot- a vantage point near the city.

In the early hours of dawn the next day, I was driven to Sarangkot. I finally get why people fall in love with sunrises now; as I stood on the hill station at Sarangkot, I saw the rising sun from amidst the Annapurna Himalayas. It was majestic and I will never forget the moment. The panoramic view of the lovely Pokhara city also provided me with a postcard perfect picture.

My next much awaited stop on my Nepal Tour was Lumbini- a Buddhist pilgrimage UNESCO World Heritage Site. The birthplace of Lord Buddha, Lumbini had some of the most amazing collection of monasteries, each unique and artistically different from one another based on their construction by different Buddhist nations. I visited the holy Mayadevi Temple, and the Puskarini Pond. The atmosphere at Lumbini is that of a deep religious serenity, the monasteries are quite fascinating to explore, which I did on a rickshaw. I saw little monk children running around in crimson robes, and had a marvelous time exploring the complex. The heritage site captures the Buddhist spirit in its peaceful surrounding, and its various Buddhist art and architectural treasures.

My last stop on my Nepal Tour was Chitwan National Park- one among the two national parks of Nepal enlisted under the UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site. Famous for its jungle safaris, I knew that Chitwan was going to present me with the natural side of Nepal, and I was right! Presenting me with a wild taste of the wilderness, I experienced Chitwan’s wide expanses of natural landscape and woodlands. The lush forests of Chitwan National Park and its parameters consist of many wild animals and rare floral abundance along with ethnic villages and old traditional settlements of the local people. Perhaps one of my most memorable moments was riding an Elephant through the woods! I explored the ethnic Tharu villages and visited the national park’s animal breeding centers. With a relaxing and euphoric nature walk along the Rapti River, I was surrounded with the ambiance of exotic birds filling up the sound of the air with their chirping.

One of the best times while I was at Chitwan was the Elephant bath. I got in the cool waters of the Rapti River and helped the elephant bath (or more specifically, got sprayed by the lovely creature!). The elephant sprayed a shower of water out of its trunk and I was in love! The excitement of playing with the elephant in the water brought out the inner child in me, and left me with a smile on my face and my soul feeling lighter.

Nepal really is a wonderful country with amazing features and beauties. It simply isn't enough to visit it once, as the country has so many attractions and highlights that it demands more well-deserving visits. “My favourite place is pokhara in nepal” Review of Pokhara

My working holiday in Nepal got off to a terrible start ,due to the fact our Gulf air flight from Muscat to Kathmandu could not land on the 14th february 2007 due to bad weather conditions(their excuse). I think it was more a case of the pilot not being capable!!! If our flight had left London on TIME , instead of 1 1/2 hours late and then left MUSCAT ON TIME(we were also 1 1/2 hour late leaving Muscat.) maybe we would have had a chance to arrive in Kathmandu in good weather.! Instead we were then flown to Dhaka in Bangladesh for refuelling(?) six hours later we arrived at Dhaka ,only to be told we would there for a few hours ,but could not leave the plane.After a while you could see many armed Soldiers and guards surrounding the plane, this was not a reassuring site,quite a worry for some passengers. On top of this the open doors to the passenger exit allowed thousands of Hungry Mosquitos to enter the plane and it was a stuggle not to get bitten. Of course the supervisor then had a great idea and started to spray Pestices all over the plane as well as over all us passengers(i am sure this is NOT legal). eventually it was time to take off again and the captain and hostess annouced that we were heading to Bahrain to catch a connecting flight to Kathmandu. As we reached Bahrain airport suddenly there was an announcement that we could not land at Bahrain and would now go to Dharanna in SAUDI. when we landed it was annonced we would have to leave the aircraft and go to airport lounge to wait for new crew to arrive to take over our flight. At the airport lounge we were herded into one room and told we had to stay right there and could not go anywhere else on the airport. After two hours of no information we were given cardboxes with some very unappetising rubbish they called food. Eventually the new crew arrived and during the flight to Bahrain(second attempt) it was announced that when we reached Bahrain , we would go straight onto Kathmandu. Reaching Bahrain after a 1 1/2 hours ,there was another suprise in store for us. instead of going to Kathmandu , we would now be going back to Muscat. When we reached Muscat NOBODY knew of our arrival or reason of being back in MUSCAT WHERE WE HAD LEFT SOME 15 HOURS AGO.After a lot of arguments the Gulf air MANAGER eventually came of his high horse and after one final argument allowed all of us passengers to board plane to Kathmandu arriving there 24 hours late with no apology to the passengers. Kathmandu was a filthy ,dirty and terribly stinking place this time , due to fact that they had a rubbish collection strike for the past 12 days, i was therefore happy to travel onto Pokhara after my Photoshot at Pashupati temple for Shivaratri. POKHARA was like entering Heaven , as you stepped of the light aircraft you felt the warm and cleaner air. People were smilling and friendly every where and always helpful. The Streets and every where else were clean. I stayed at the Barahi HOTEL (A superb hotel which i reviewed 18 month ago) and had all the help and advise i required . I booked a Private car for my trip for the Sarangkot Sunrise experience , this turned out to be the best 600 rupees i have ever spent.The driver was a very kNOWLEDGEABLE PERSON and friendly took me to the best lookout point and waited for me for 1 and 1/2 hours whilst i took the most amazing photos of the mountains waking up to the sun.He even parked his car in a good position to make my walk down from viewpoint easier. Top marks for OHM the driver and top marks for this wonderful experience. The next day i visited the Beautiful Peace pagoda which overlooks Pokhara and the PHEWA lake. WHAT VIEWS!!! Anyone going to Pokhara must visit this. i also payed a visit to the INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAINEERING MUSUEM located on the outskirts of PoKHARA LAKESIDE near the airport. This Musuem is airconditioned and therefoer great for cooling down a bit , it is also extremly informative and teaches lots about all the different cultures and tribes that excist in Nepal as well as as info on animals and all the mountains . There are lots of Displays and pictures., definitely worth the entence fee of about two pounds english money. Pokhara IS A GREAT PLACE TO START ANY TREK AROUND THE ANNAPURNAS, with hundreds of trekking shops and helpful agencies. From here you can take MICROLIGHT AIRCRAFT FLIGHTS, DO PARAGLIDING or just chill on the lake by hiring a boat. GREAT for photography everywhere. motorbikes are on hire everywhere and can be helpful to get around as there is so very much to do and See around Pokhara and Lakeside, like the devi falls , mahendra caves ,bindabasini temple ,sarangkot to mention a few.If you want to Chill or full on Action and Adventure ,Pokhara is your Place in my eyes. I have yet to find a better place in this world and i have travel all round the globe in my 45 years of travelling. I love POKHARA!!!

If you ever visit Nepal in your lifetime, make sure you visit Pokhara, a small town set in the lap of nature with the mighty Annapurna Mountain range of the Himalayas providing a picture perfect backdrop for an idyllic vacation. Some hail it as the Switzerland of Nepal ! The town is frequented by a lot of tourists foreign as well as local Nepalese who wish to escape from the maddening urban life in search of peace and solitude. A beautiful lake called Fewa and the picturesque Annapurna mountain range are pretty much the major attractions for the tourists. Of course, being a small town helps in the sense that you don't get the feeling of people rushing about their day-to-day work. Life is Gooooooood here !! I recommend you stay at the Fishtail Lodge in Pokhara which is set on a piece of land inside the lake and is accessible by a man-made raft, which adds to the whole experience. Fishtail Lodge is the only landmark place to stay in Pokhara coz its right there where nature stays. The place has been a favourite amongst the VVIPs and the Royals including Prince Charles, Prince Naruhito and many more. The Annapurna Mountain Range is visible on a clear day and is particularly marked by a unique mountain called Machhapuchhare in Nepali which means Fish Tail. The shadow that this mountain creates in the lake gives an appearance of the tail of a fish. Once you're in Pokhara, you must visit Sarangkot, a hill top destination to view the morning sunrise. Believe me, the view is absolutely FABULOUS !! As the sunlight makes its appearance, the snow capped peaks of the Annapurna Range become GOLDEN in colour. This will be an experience you will never forget for the rest of your life. I felt the mountains calling out to me, asking me to join them and bathe in this morning sunlight. I wish I had the wings to soar above these mountains and share their joy. You must also take a boat ride in Fewa lake while you're admiring its beauty and vast expanse. There is a temple in the middle of the lake dedicated to Goddess Durga and is frequented by the Nepali Royal family. Another important place unique to Pokhara is the International Mountaineering Museum. I suggest you make a trip to this place even though you're not quite enthusiastic about mountaineering or museums in the first place. The mere location of the museum provides for some stunning pictures that you will cherish life-long !! I fell in love with the Annapurna Mountains and I bet you will too :-) Get to Pokhara and add everlasting memories to your life experience !!

It’s a classic Trinidadian dessert — a chocolate cake soaked in overproof rum and topped with swoops of ultrapasteurized whipped cream.

But wait: It’s also a signature Pakistani cake, saturated with cherry brandy essence. And a Chilean cake, festooned with locally grown cherries. And a Lebanese cake — not too sweet, with little to no alcohol. And a Nepali cake. And a Zimbabwean cake. It’s even popular on the remote islands of Fiji.

What kind of dessert could inspire such a territorial dispute?

It’s Black Forest cake , named for a corner of Germany that still conjures images of fairy tales .

Recipe: Black Forest Cake

Try telling that to the rest of the world. The cake, long an adopted favorite in many countries, is more popular than ever — except perhaps in Germany. Thanks in part to a recent wave of ’90s-era nostalgia among younger generations, it’s found new life on social media and in restaurants across the world. Google searches for “Black Forest cake” have nearly doubled in volume over the last 10 years, most of them seeking a recipe.

Today, Black Forest cake belongs to everyone and no one. It’s the Danish butter-cookie tin of desserts — a European artifact that has come to transcend cultures. In fact, several people interviewed for this article were astonished to hear that the cake didn’t hail from their native country.

A person dressed in a white shirt, in a kitchen, uses an offset spatula to smooth frosting on a layer cake on a cake stand. Bowls of whipped cream, cherries and other ingredients are on the counter.

The traditional version layers cherry brandy-infused chocolate spongecake with airy whipped cream and cherry ornaments. But Natasha Laggan, 40, who runs a Trinidadian cooking account on Instagram and YouTube and lives in Davie, Fla., long believed that the traditional liquor for the cake was rum — the spirit used in most of the restaurant versions she ate during her childhood in California, Trinidad.

Kudakwashe Makoni, 44, a chef from Harare, Zimbabwe, insisted that his nation’s cows lend a distinctly rich flavor to the cake’s cream. “Nobody does a Black Forest like Zimbabwe,” he said.

When his family moved to Dallas in 2000, he was shocked to see Black Forest cake at a local bakery. He wondered: Why was an American shop serving a Zimbabwean dessert?

The cake’s very name proclaims its Teutonic origin. But some people said they thought “Black Forest” referred to the chocolate shavings on the cake.

Sumayya Usmani, a Glasgow food writer and cookbook author from Karachi, Pakistan, long thought the Black Forest was a sort of fantasy realm. “It had this Narnia image in my mind, where there is beautiful snow and cherries and chocolate shavings,” she said.

In Pakistan, the cake is a staple of any respected bakery, said Ms. Usmani, 51. It is “exotic and foreign, but very much part of the culture.”

Dessert trends come and go, yet Black Forest remains the cartoonish archetype of a celebration cake, with its eye-catching cherry garnish and contrasting black-and-white layers.

“It looks like the kind of cake you would draw if you were a child and you were drawing the perfect cake,” said Helen Goh, a cookbook author in London.

That simplicity, and a flavor combination that can feel both familiar and unfamiliar, may help explain how a cake from Germany — a country that exerts a narrow culinary influence globally — captivated such an expansive audience.

The first time Kashish Shrestha, 41, a writer and photographer, tasted Black Forest cake at a bakery in Kathmandu, Nepal, the texture reminded him of ras malai, a milky, spongy South Asian sweet. In Nepal, “Black Forest” is often used as a generic term for any kind of cake, he said.

Ramin Ganeshram, a Trinidadian American culinary historian in Westport, Conn., said the cake recalled the rum-soaked Caribbean black cake .

As a child in Singapore, the cookbook author Sharon Wee thought of Black Forest cake as a fancier version of chiffon cakes , which became popular there in the 1950s. Serving her friends a Black Forest cake on her birthday was a status symbol — “like toting your Hermès bag to primary school,” said Ms. Wee, 53, who splits her time between New York City and Singapore.

The same cannot be said in Germany, where the cake is seen as “sort of old-fashioned,” said Janosch Förster, a research follow at the German Archive of Culinary Arts .

Both its creator and birthplace are still a matter of debate; some say it came from the Black Forest region, others say Berlin. But it is unquestionably a German invention, from sometime in the early 20th century.

“It is basically just a standard, not-so-interesting cake,” said Andreas Klöckner, the chief executive of Goldhahn und Sampson , a culinary store and cooking school in Berlin. “It has a different standing outside Germany as something special.”

The cake’s travels most likely occurred as Germans moved around the world as emigrants, missionaries, chefs in high-end hotels and refugees escaping Nazism in the 1930s — or Nazis fleeing after World War II, said José López Ganem, the executive director of the Fine Cacao and Chocolate Institute in Cambridge, Mass.

One of the most effective proselytizers of Black Forest cake was probably the British Empire, said Carla Martin, the institute’s president.

“There was a lot of German technique and German cuisine that got spread through British association,” she said. “They were the capital center of the world. They were taking traditions of the European continent and expanding them, and they were the best at it.”

Black Forest cake had a lot going for it. Its ingredients, particularly cocoa powder, were becoming more readily available, said Ms. Ganeshram, the culinary historian. The alcohol preserved the cake, extending its shelf life in tropical climates.

The cake could also be easily adapted: Bakers in Muslim-majority countries, for example, often omit the liquor, and some Singaporean recipes call for blueberry jam, which can be less expensive than cherries.

These modifications speak to the resilience of colonized communities, Ms. Ganeshram said. “This may have been brought here to a place it doesn’t necessarily belong, but we are going to take it and adapt it and make it our own.”

Neither the flavors nor the appearance of Black Forest cake align with current pastry trends. Desserts today “are more sophisticated,” said Dorie Greenspan, the renowned cookbook author. “They are sparer. They are not so over-the-top.”

Still, several pastry chefs are giving the nostalgic cake a creative update.

It arrives as a roulade at Thistle & Leek , a neighborhood restaurant in Newton, Mass., and in a jar at Swadesi , a new Indian-inspired bakery in Chicago. (Swadesi’s owner, Sujan Sarkar, once believed that Black Forest cake came from Kolkata, India, where as a child he saw many of the city’s Christians preparing cakes during the holidays.)

At his Kayu Bakehouse locations in London, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh, the Lebanese chef Karim Bourgi adorns his version with whipped vanilla ganache and dark chocolate crémeux. Heena Punwani, the owner of Maska Bakery in Mumbai, fields weekly messages asking when her Black Forest cake with chocolate mousse and Kashmiri cherry compote will make its return.

Christopher Tan, the author of the Singaporean dessert cookbook “ The Way of Kueh ,” described Black Forest cake as “indestructible,” because it can be a dressed-up confection or a simple grocery store treat.

“If you can only get canned cherries and slightly dubious U.H.T. whipped cream, if you can only get compound chocolate, you can still make something that looks like a Black Forest,” he said.

Mr. Tan grew up in a family that bought the cake from pastry shops at luxury hotels in Singapore, but a decade ago, he had the chance to try it straight from the source. On a working trip to Germany, he visited Ulm, a city near the Black Forest, going from bakery to bakery in search of the cake. But no one served it — the owners all said it was passé.

“On those four days in Germany, in Frankfurt and in Ulm, the only Black Forest cake I saw on that trip was on board my flight,” he said. “On Thai Airways.”
