The School of Psychology at UNSW is the leading Psychology school in Australia. A Research Assistant in the School of Psychology at UNSW Sydney provides technical and research assistance to the research team working on a NHMRC funded project investigating disorders of action control, using mice as subjects. The focus of the research team is on the way that the structure of the nervous system supports this specific capacity and how specific disorders of the basal ganglia affect it.

About the role

• LEVEL 5 ($85k – $96k)  plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Fixed term – 14 months
• Full time (35 hours)

The Research Assistant works in the Decision Neuroscience Laboratory reporting to the Senior Research Fellow and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:  

• Assist with conducting experiments in adult mice.
• Support the performance of small animal survival stereotaxic surgery including the insertion of guide cannula, infusion of pharmacological agents, and other surgical procedures as may be necessary.
• Supporting general histological evaluation of animal tissue including tissue sectioning, staining, immunohistochemical labelling, microscopic imaging, tissue maintenance and storage.
• Perform data collection, entry and analysis.
• Respond to routine enquiries relating to the research project.
• Undertake unsupervised research support tasks consistent with established methodologies.
• Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant (Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
• Demonstrated proficiency in laboratory skills related to the study of animal learning and measuring animal behaviour.
• Demonstrated ability to assist with conducting in rodent stereotaxic surgery.
• Demonstrated ability to support and analyse chemogenetic, pharmacogenetic, optogenetic and using various viruses and appropriate optical imaging tools.
• Ability to work closely as part of a team and strategically contribute to research outcomes.
• High level of computing skills including databases, spreadsheets and graphical programs.
• Proficient in immunohistochemistry.
• Skills in microscopy, particularly with confocal microscopy.
• A thorough understanding of experimental design, statistics and statistical methods.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
