CS 277   Algorithms and Data Structures for Data Science   credit: 4 Hours.

Introduction to elementary concepts in algorithms and classical data structures with a focus on their applications in Data Science. Topics include algorithm analysis (ex: Big-O notation), elementary data structures (ex: lists, stacks, queues, trees, and graphs), basics of discrete algorithm design principles (ex: greedy, divide and conquer, dynamic programming), and discussion of discrete and continuous optimization. CS 307   Modeling and Learning in Data Science   credit: 4 Hours.

Introduction to the use of classical approaches in data modeling and machine learning in the context of solving data-centric problems. A broad coverage of fundamental models is presented, including linear models, unsupervised learning, supervised learning, and deep learning. A significant emphasis is placed on the application of the models in Python and the interpretability of the results. Prerequisite: STAT 207 ; one of MATH 225 , MATH 227 , MATH 257 , MATH 415 , MATH 416 , ASRM 406 .

CS 340   Introduction to Computer Systems   credit: 3 Hours.

Basics of computer systems. Number representations, assembly/machine language, abstract models of processors (fetch/execute, memory hierarchy), processes/process control, simple memory management, file I/O and directories, network programming, usage of cloud services. Credit is not given for both CS 340 and CS 240. Prerequisite: CS 225 .

CS 341   System Programming   credit: 4 Hours.

Basics of system programming, including POSIX processes, process control, inter-process communication, synchronization, signals, simple memory management, file I/O and directories, shell programming, socket network programming, RPC programming in distributed systems, basic security mechanisms, and standard tools for systems programming such as debugging tools. CS 357   Numerical Methods I   credit: 3 Hours.

Fundamentals of numerical methods for students in science and engineering; floating-point computation, systems of linear equations, approximation of functions and integrals, the single nonlinear equation, and the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations; various applications in science and engineering; programming exercises and use of high quality mathematical library routines. Client- and server-side technologies that enable modern Web applications. Topics include the building blocks of the Web (browsers, HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and data exchange (HTTP, AJAX, JSON, REST). Assignments expose students to full-stack web development, and JavaScript frameworks that scaffold MVC architectures and event-driven, asynchronous programming. Theory, design, and implementation of text-based information systems. CS 415   Game Development   credit: 3 or 4 Hours.

A team and project-based course on the technical aspects of video game development and game engine internals: geometric modeling, game physics and AI, shader programming, real-time physically based rendering, and software engineering practices within the game industry. The central focus of the course is the development of a game by teams of 3 to 5 students. The course strongly emphasizes code development using a modern game engine. Students will gain skills necessary to develop games and to develop game engines. 3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. Prerequisite: CS 225 .

CS 416   Data Visualization   credit: 3 or 4 Hours.

Elements of databases, computer graphics and perceptual psychology combined to utilize the human visual system to improve user understanding of large datasets. Topics include appropriate and effective selection and construction of charts, organization of dashboards, and design for user engagement and interaction. 3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. CS 417   Virtual Reality   credit: 3 or 4 Hours.

Provides both a deep understanding of the fundamentals of virtual reality (VR) and practical experience implementing VR systems. CS 435   Cloud Networking   credit: 3 or 4 Hours.

Provides a foundational view of computer networks with a focus on enabling modern large-scale cloud computing. The first part of this course studies the principles upon which the Internet and other networks are built, and how those principles translate into deployed protocols. The second part covers how those principles are applied in network infrastructure for modern clouds, enabling deployment of virtual networks on shared infrastructure, efficient transfer of big data and low latency communication, and federation of applications across countries and continents. 3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. Design, application, analysis, and deployment of communication protocols and system software behind modern cloud/compute/network infrastructures. CS 442   Trustworthy Machine Learning   credit: 3 or 4 Hours.

Prepares students to understand the security and privacy problems in machine learning and educates students to propose different attack strategies to identify the vulnerabilities of a range of learning algorithms and understand different defense approaches towards trustworthy machine learning systems. Students will explore topics including basic machine learning foundations (e.g., linear regression and PCA), adversarial attacks against different learning algorithms, differential privacy, data valuation, and different categories of defenses. The lessons are reinforced via a series of topic-driven lectures, coding assignments, related paper readings, exams and in-class discussions. Students will learn to analyze current interactions between attackers and defenders on machine learning and therefore develop an understanding of the principles on trustworthy machine learning which is an emerging and important topic. Peer-to-peer systems, sensor networks, and fundamental theoretical distributed computing. Review of classical work in each area, and application of design methodologies to explore overlaps across them. Emphasis on protocol design, systems issues, and theory. CS 540   Deep Learning Theory   credit: 4 Hours.

A rigorous mathematical course covering foundational analyses of the approximation, optimization, and generalization properties of Deep Neural Networks. Topics include: constructive and non-constructive approximations with one hidden layer; benefits of depth; optimization in the NTK regime; maximum margin optimization outside the NTK regime; Rademacher complexity, VC dimensino, and covering number bounds for ReLU networks. Evaluation is primarily based on homeworks, with a smaller project component. The course goal is to prepare students perform their own research in the field. 4 graduate hours. No professional credit. Prerequisite: Basic linear algebra, probability, proof-writing, and statistics required. Real analysis recommended.

CS 542   Statistical Reinforcement Learning   credit: 4 Hours.

Theory of reinforcement learning, with a focus on sample complexity analyses. Specific topics include MDP basics, finite-sample analyses of online (i.e., exploration) and offline (i.e., batch) RL with a tabular representation, finite-sample analyses of online and offline RL with function approximation, state abstraction theory, off-policy evaluation (importance sampling), and policy gradient. The course goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the statistical properties of RL under various settings (e.g., online vs offline), preparing the students for doing research in the area. 4 graduate hours. Fundamentals of machine learning and signal processing as they pertain to the development of machines that can understand complex real-world signals, such as speech, images, movies, music, biological and mechanical readings, etc. Hands-on examples of how to decompose, analyze, classify, detect and consolidate signals, and examine various commonplace operations such as finding faces from camera feeds, organizing personal music collections, designing speech dialog systems and understanding movie content. 4 graduate hours. Current research trends in computer and network security. Privacy, tamper-resistance, unwanted traffic, monitoring and surveillance, and critical infrastructure protection. Students work in teams in close coordination with the course instructor to develop one of the topics in depth by carrying out background research and an exploratory project. CS 565   Human-Computer Interaction   credit: 4 Hours.

In-depth coverage of advanced topics in human-computer interaction (HCI). Applied models of human performance and attention, design tools for creative design tasks, interruptions and peripheral displays, gestures, and bimanual input, and usability evaluation techniques. Students complete a research-oriented term project of their choosing. Prerequisite: CS 465 .

CS 567   Social Signals and Social Media   credit: 4 Hours.

Online social interactions occur in many arenas important to society and human well-being, but are mediated through algorithmic interventions that alter the users expectations in these social spaces. This class explores the presentation of self, the presentation of collectives, the presentation of news, and social dynamics in these online spaces--and how algorithmic intervention shapes them from the perspective of social signaling theory. Topics covered include: the evolution of algorithmic matchmaking (as in online resume/interviews and dating sites), why people share misinformation, the mitigation of trolling, ethics, and bias in social media systems. Upon completion of this course, students will have an up-to-date understanding of the design social media interfaces with incentive structures from social signaling theory. 4 graduate hours. CS 568   User-Centered Machine Learning   credit: 4 Hours.

Introduces guidelines, processes, and systems for designing effective user experiences powered by machine learning models. Topics include design tradeoffs unique to data-driven products and services such as automation versus control, precision versus recall, and personalization versus privacy. Readings from human computer-interaction, product design, cognitive science, machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing frame in-class design exercises. CS 580   Topics in Algorithmic Game Theory   credit: 4 Hours.

A theoretical CS course covering advances in algorithmic game theory. This includes study of strategic, computational, learning, dynamic, and fairness aspects of games and markets (organizations that involves rational and strategic agents). In particular, topics will include computation and complexity of equilibria, mechanism design, fair-division, dynamics in games and markets, price-of-anarchy etc.. These topics arise from applications such as online marketplaces (like Lyft, Uber, eBay, sponsored search, TaskRabbit), social networks, recommendation systems, kidney exchange, spectrum auction, etc., and thereby will prepare students for related research and/or industry jobs. 4 graduate hours. No professional credit. Prerequisite: CS 473 .

CS 581   Algorithmic Genomic Biology   credit: 4 Hours.

Gives each student enough background and training in the area of algorithmic genomic biology so that each will be able to do research in this area, and publish papers. The main focus of the course is phylogeny (evolutionary tree) estimation, multiple sequence alignment, and genome-scale phylogenetics, which are problems that present very interesting challenges from a computational and statistical standpoint. Time permitting, we will also discuss computational problems in microbiome analysis, protein function and structure prediction, genome assembly, and even historical linguistics. Students will learn the mathematical and computational foundations in these areas, read the current literature, and do a team research project. The course is designed for doctoral students in computer science, computer engineering, bioengineering, mathematics, and statistics, and does not depend on any prior background in biology. The technical material will depend on discrete algorithms, graph theory, simulations, and probabilistic analysis of algorithms. 4 graduate hours. No professional credit. CS 582   Machine Learning for Bioinformatics   credit: 4 Hours.

This graduate course on bioinformatics introduces a selection of topics in computational biology and bioinformatics, with special emphasis on current problems in regulatory genomics and systems biology. Computational approaches discussed will focus on Machine Learning techniques such as Bayesian inference, graphical models, supervised learning and network analysis. Bioinformatics topics will be introduced through lectures by instructor and research paper presentations by students, and include regulatory sequence analysis, cistromics, epigenomics, regulatory network reconstruction, non-coding variant interpretation, and protein structure and function prediction. A research project involving real data analysis with techniques related to course content is mandatory and will help prepare students for bioinformatics research. 4 graduate hours. Approximation algorithms for NP-hard problems. Basic and advanced techniques in approximation algorithm design: combinatorial algorithms; mathematical programming methods including linear and semi-definite programming, local search methods, and others. Will introduce students to the computational principles involved in autonomous vehicles, with practical labwork on an actual vehicle. Sensing topics will include vision, lidar and sonar sensing, including state-of-the-art methods for detection, classification, and segmentation. Bayesian filtering methods will be covered in the context of both SLAM and visual tracking. Planning and control topics will cover vehicle dynamics models, state-lattice planning, sampling-based kinodynamic planning, optimal control and trajectory optimization, and some reinforcement learning. The Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship ( IDEALS ) is the University's digital repository of research outputs and scholarly content produced by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign community. Since Fall 2010, all graduate students depositing a dissertation or thesis to the Graduate College are required to do so electronically. After approval and degrees are conferred, the dissertations and theses are made available in IDEALS . Scholarly Communication & Publishing, the U of I Library unit which administers IDEALS, has an excellent online guide to searching or browsing for materials there.

IDEALS Policies

Dissertations from Fall 2010-Present

Because these are official student records, some of the IDEALS policies and procedures do not apply to these documents. These are:

  • Withdrawal policy : Dissertations and theses may not be withdrawn except in extremely exceptional circumstances governed by the Graduate College.
  • Updating documents : Authors and faculty advisers may not update or change the dissertation or thesis once it has been deposited in IDEALS except in extremely exceptional circumstances governed by the Graduate College.
  • Access Restrictions : Authors and faculty advisers may not directly request an access restriction through IDEALS. These requests must be made by the author to the Graduate College.
  • Metadata Updates : Small corrections to metadata such as corrections to spelling errors may be made through a request in IDEALS. Per communication with the Graduate College, metadata is not considered part of the academic record. However, substantial changes should still be avoided if unnecessary. Metadata records can also be updated to include links to related items, such as a corresponding dataset in the Illinois Data Bank.

Dissertations and Theses Prior to 2010:

IDEALS and the University Library are actively digitizing dissertations and theses that were originally deposited in paper. Unless we have the agreement of the author or the thesis or dissertation was published as a technical report or working paper series by a university department, these dissertations and theses are restricted to those with an active NetID and password issued by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dissertations and theses themselves may not be updated or changed.

If you have authored a dissertation or thesis in the past at the University of Illinois and would like to see it appear here or would like to open access to a dissertation or thesis already made available here, please fill out the Request to Make Dissertation or Thesis Available in IDEALS form or contact [email protected] for more information.

In theory, the Library should have at least one copy of all deposited Illinois dissertations prior to 2010. Most non-circulating archival copies (prior to 2010) are kept in the University Archives , with a circulating copy located in other libraries across campus.

  • ProQuest Dissertations and Theses This link opens in a new window PQDT is a collection of citations to dissertations and theses worldwide from 1861 to the present day. Full-text is available for most of the dissertations added since 1997 and some of the older graduate works. PQDT is also the official digital dissertations archive for the Library of Congress. Also included are the citations to British and Irish dissertations and theses (PQDT: UK & Ireland) since 1761 and abstracts for content since 1986. Note: UIUC masters theses are not in PQDT. They are only found in IDEALS or in the library catalog .

Here is an example of a subject search for education dissertations written at Illinois between 2000 and 2004:

  • In the first search box, type University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and select University/Institution - SCH from the dropdown menu at the right. ( Note: The full name of the school needs to be typed out, so "University of Illinois" or "UIUC" will not work.) 
  • About midway down the page, in the box that says "Subject heading (all)," type "Education."
  • To limit by a range of years, select "Specific Date Range..." from Publication Date
  • Type in the years 2000 to 2004 in the Start Year and End Year boxes.
  • Click the Search button.

If you're unable to locate a pre-1985 U of I dissertation in the online catalog or in a database, search the physical thesis file that is in the card catalog on the second floor of the Main Library.

The card catalog holds records for the archival copies of all theses and dissertations on deposit in the library from 1873 until the beginning of 1984. It is also useful when searching without a complete citation.

  • Successfully complete two or three CS electives, numbered 405-498 (excluding CS 491), beyond those required for graduation, and complete one or two semesters of CS 499 Senior Thesis, for a minimum of 12 hours. Different Departments - Different Structures

Most of the graph is dominated by the giant structure in the middle, where Math, Physics, Statistics, and Chemistry lie at the heart with fields like Engineering, Computer Science, Psychology, and Economics as appendages. It's interesting to compare that to the fine arts or liberal arts courses, which tend to be less co-dependent. Note that these following graphs come from Fall 2015-Spring 2016, unlike the above graph.

Statistics, Physics, and Computer Science

In this graph, I chose to visualize Statistics, Physics, and Computer Science. Even in these few departments, we can see some inter-departmental dependency (CS 574 (Randomized Algorithms) uses information from STAT 400 (Statistics and Probability I)). Additionally, outside of a few limited classes (mostly independent studies), almost all classes within a department are dependent on one another. Thus, the material from one class tends to propagate forward through other classes in the department.

  • CS 225: Data Structures has the most dependencies, where 16 other courses list CS 225 as a prerequisite.
  • 294 courses are part of 79 unique clusters , making the average cluster 3.72 courses large .

The Fine Arts

For fine arts, I chose to look at Music, Dance, and Theater classes. Even though there are several dense thickets of course dependency, we see that for many more classes that do not require any knowledge from other classes within the major. Additionally we tend to see more clusters amongst the interdependent classes; although there are several groups of courses that are interdependent in these fields, there is not a single class upon which the rest of the department is dependent. For example, THEA 170 (Fundamentals of Acting), THEA 125 (Graphic Skills), and THEA 208 (Dramatic Analysis) all are the basis for many more classes, but each thread of classes they spawn are completely independent.

  • THEA 378: Acting Studio II: Acting has the most dependencies, where 8 other courses list THEA 378 as a prerequisite.
  • 462 courses are part of 298 unique clusters , making the average cluster 1.55 courses large .

The Liberal Arts

The liberal arts (here represented by English, History, and Law) are by far the most disjoint the departments. Besides a few instances of "Some Subject I" and "Some Subject II," almost all of the courses within these departments are completely independent. One class's material will seldom be the basis for another class.

  • ENGL 200: Intro to the Study of Lit has the most dependencies, where 4 other courses list ENGL 200 as a prerequisite.

These are all language departments across UIUC. The interesting thing about this is how much more it resembles the fine arts than the liberal arts despite being in the college of LAS. However, despite mirroring the fine arts in terms of structure, most of the components are separated into individual departments rather than some small track of a larger department.

Prerequisites

In this matrix, we can see how much each engineering major depends on other sciences (I included Computer Science as as science rather than an engineering here). The color of the squares were darker depending on how many courses within the engineering department depend on a class within the science department. A few interesting trends emerge - for instance, despite the fact that the most people conclude engineering is based around Physics, it seems like traditional Physics is not the baseline for most engineering at UIUC. Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, which uses Physics but is distinctly different than the scientific traditional version, seems to be the basis for more of the engineering. Although Math is unquestionably at the core of several of these departments, it's interesting to see Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and several other disciplines complete ignore Statistics despite topics such as Thermodynamics relying so heavily on it.

Longest Class Chain

The large dots here form one of the longest series of classes that exist at UIUC. Starting at the red dot, they are MATH 112, MATH 115, MATH 220, MATH 231, MATH 241, TAM 210, TAM 211, TAM 251, CEE 380, CEE 483, CEE 484, and CEE 580 (Algebra, Preparation for Calculus, Calculus, Calculus II, Calculus III, Introduction to Statics, Statics, Introductory Solid Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, Soil Mechanics and Behavior, Applied Soil Mechanics, and Excavation and Support Systems). That means if you wanted to take CEE 580 as an undergraduate, you would need to enter this school with at least MATH 231 credit, carefully planning your classes each semester to reach CEE 580 in your last semester senior year.

Each small dot represents a class that in some way depends on MATH112.

Also note that the Table of Contents is most useful for the reader when entries are limited to chapter-level titles only or to chapter-level titles and first-level (main) section headings, as has been done in the examples above.

A note on departmental requirements

This list describes only Graduate College requirements for student theses. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign confers graduate degrees in over 100 units, and many of these departments have additional, discipline-specific format requirements. Students should consult with their program regarding departmental format requirements and departmental thesis review procedures.

Senior Design

Each fall, CS Lecturer Michael Woodley welcomes a new group of students to the 2-semester senior projects course (CS 492/4). He invites the students to apply to work on projects with corporate clients, or he matches them with projects for clients in the non-profit sector. Either way, the students begin one of the most  challenging yet valuable classes in their undergraduate career.

According to Woodley, in eight short months, the students will apply years of knowledge to solving a real-world problem. In the process, they will have learned how to: work with colleagues—a typical project has four students—define a problem, develop and test a solution, and communicate their progress to their client.

This past spring, more than 140 students completed 30+ projects—the most ever in the course’s 14-year history. In April, they presented their research results to clients, faculty, and fellow students at the Senior Projects Showcase in Siebel Center. One of those projects, SugarCUB3D , taught children introductory programming concepts and then rewarded them by 3D printing their initials with icing on an Oreo cookie.

Other memorable projects over the years include real-time facial recognition and memory software for Rockwell Collins, a mobile app that enabled cancer patients undergoing treatment to easily schedule help from their friends with meals and other tasks, and geographic information technology that converts map data into games.  

Woodley encourages companies to consider sponsoring one or more projects, especially since students interested in working for a corporate client submit their resumes as part of the matching process at the start of the course.

Florida State University awarded honors medallions to 24 high-achieving graduates during the Aug. 1 Medallion Ceremony in the Nancy B. Marcus Great Hall.

The FSU Honors Program supports the efforts and talents of some of the university’s most intellectually curious students who have the potential, dedication and drive for creating change.

The ceremony included remarks by Michael Furman, associate director of the University Honors Program; Joe O’Shea, associate provost and dean of Undergraduate Studies; Sophie Davis, dual honors graduate; and Jeanne N. Curtin, immediate past chair of the National Board of Directors of the FSU Alumni Association.

The breakdown of the honors awardees is as follows:

16 graduates, University Honors Program Completed the University Honors Program, earning at least 18 honors points in fulfillment of the FSU Honors Program requirements.

4 graduates, Honors in the Major Program Completed an honors thesis in fulfillment of the requirement for the distinction “with honors” in their major.

3 graduates, Dual Honors Completed both the University Honors Program and the Honors in the Major Program.

Reflections from a Senior in CS

Thought I'd make some closing thoughts on the CS experience at this school for future/current students.

Figure out what the goal of college is for you - to get a job, to get into academia, to strengthen your knowledge in CS, to go out to bars and make lots of friends, or a combination of all/some of these. This will save you lots of time when making decisions. Should you work all night to bump that MP from 85 to a 95, or would you rather go to happies with your friends. Would you sacrifice your grades to make new friends and gain leadership experience in RSOs. If you know your goal, it is relatively simple to make these decisions.

You don't need to know exactly what you want to do within CS, but do not let that be an excuse to do nothing. Don't know if you want to do machine learning, cybersecurity, backend, ui/ux, frontend, product management, or leadership? Doesn't matter. Choose something, and dive deep into it. If you like it, great! If not, move on to the next thing.

Being kind gets you further than being smart. I'm not saying being technically competent isn't important -- it is. but, DO NOT BURN BRIDGES. TALK TO EVERYONE. BE KIND TO EVERYONE. This is especially valuable for freshman. I'm not telling you to be the most outgoing person or spend all your time trying to make random friends just for the sake of it. But when you run into people you met once, say hi! This is very dependent on the type of person you are, and why you are even in college, but in general I notice that people who are just kind and get along with everyone tend to do better in life lol.

If you want to go into further education, do research. or, have connections with some faculty/professors. You cannot get into most masters program without some academic letters of rec, so be a face that some professors know. I graduated with a very high gpa, but didn't apply to a single masters program because I had no connections in the university.

Almost everyone around you is cheating. It is pretty wild how UIUC is ranked so highly with a HUGE proportion of students cheating in classes like Data Structures and Systems Prog. Again, if you know your goal is to just explore computer science topics and expand your knowledge, this wouldn't bother you. However, if your goal in college is to land a high paying job or get into higher education, it will definitely bother you that others are taking easy routes to potentially take your job/college spot. My best advice is to either ignore the issue or join them. Complaining tends to do nothing. I'm sure professors know and don't care, either because they are lazy, or because if you cheat in college you are usually just cheating yourself out of an education.

College isn't designed to be a pipeline to a job. I found myself many times wondering why I'm spending all this time on a course/topics that I won't need in Software Engineering. However, the curriculum is designed to give you a wide breathe of computer science topics, not software engineering topics.

Go out more. Make deep, real connections with people as well as some not-so-deep friendships. Make mistakes, make dumb decisions. Messing up now is way better than messing up in the real world.

    College is indeed a pipeline to a job, if your main goal with a college is a job. My first internship was directly from one of UIUC's CS career fairs, and the second one was from a recruiter who searched for "UIUC CS Student" in linkedin, and most of the selected kids in the Chicago area are studying in UIUC, while very few are from "higher ranked" schools like northwestern, uchicago, etc.
