The Very Precious Life of Elon Musk
21 August 2024
By Gwynne Dyer
Elon Musk is heading for a crash. It’s only a matter of time before one or another of his random enthusiasms brings him down. But if I had the power I would guarantee him at least two more years of solvency before he loses control of his companies, his great wealth, and possibly even his freedom.
My apparent sympathy for Musk gets me a lot of flak from my wife, one of my sons, and most of my friends, who cannot wait to see him go under. He is so arrogant, so erratic and so wrong-headed in his politics (he must be reading Ayn Rand) that his downfall will give great pleasure to millions.
And the downfall is almost certainly coming soon. As the entrepreneur and professor Scott Galloway recently remarked: “No company with over $1bn in revenue has ever lost 60% of its revenues in a 12-month period, in a non-war period.,,,Twitter is literally the worst-performing business in history.” (Like many people, he’s still reluctant to call it X.)
The whole X debacle demonstrates the rapid decline in Musk’s business acumen. He offered far too much to buy Twitter, the delighted owners immediately accepted, Musk tried to back out, the courts forced him to go through with the deal, and he ended up owning a slowly declining business that gave him (so he imagined) a serious voice in US politics.
As any 10-year-old could have told him, if he effectively abandoned serious monitoring and opened Twitter/X to every hate-filled ranter with some lies to peddle, the advertisers who are the real source of his cash flow will take their distance from his site.
But Musk told the advertisers to “go fuck yourself” if they didn’t want to advertise on his platform, so almost all his big accounts pulled out. Now, less than a year later, he is suing those same advertisers for not advertising on his platform. Good luck with that one.
In the meantime, Musk seems to be covering X’s losses by pulling money out of his most successful business, Tesla. He’s so rich that this can go on for a long time (unless Tesla’s shareholders revolt), but it’s definitely not good practice.
Why is he behaving like this? ‘Megalomania’ is not a precise term in psychology, but it usually get worse with time and he certainly fits that pattern. Another informal term that probably applies to him is ‘on the spectrum’. While that can actually be an asset in some business contexts, it is not playing well for him.
So why should we care what happens to Musk?
The world owes him some gratitude for pioneering electric cars when nobody else was really working at it (and he did it specifically to alleviate the climate crisis), but if Tesla failed now other electric vehicle manufacturers would quickly fill the market gap. However, he still has another job to do, and if he’s not available it may not happen at all.
The fifth iteration of his giant ‘Starship’ heavy lift rocket will fly this month or next, and with every iteration it gets a bit closer to delivering the kind of performance that will transform space flight.
Every flight so far has crashed into the sea, but that’s the development method Musk uses: launch it, find out what made it fail, fix it, and launch again. It will probably take about another five flights before he gets it all right, so that’s around a year. Then another year of many flawless launches and landings before it is certified for manned flight.
And then Musk ceases to be the indispensable man. Nobody else has had the will, the skill and the money to make this thing happen, but once it is certified anybody can manage the exploitation of the reusable Starship/heavy booster combination. That will open up the entire solar system for human beings.
Reducing the cost of getting a kilogram into orbit by 99%, which is the plausible claim he makes for Starship, is not an improvement. It’s a revolution. But if Musk goes bankrupt and SpaceX also gets tied up in the courts for many years – as it is increasingly possible to imagine – then the whole thing could go down the drain.
If you don’t care about the human race getting out into the universe, or at least into our own wider neighbourhood, then go ahead and hate Musk. But if you do care, then acknowledge that Musk needs two more years to make that future possible, and ask whatever gods may be to grant him that time.

Gwynne Dyer’s new book is ‘Intervention Earth: Life-Saving Ideas from the World’s Climate Engineers’.
Tuesday saw the release of Elon Musk , author Walter Isaacson’s mammoth new biography of the controversial tech mogul , and hardly a chapter of the nearly 700-page book goes by without a weird anecdote about the Tesla and SpaceX CEO’s eccentric, sometimes self-destructive behavior. We are treated to insights about volatile relationships with family and partners, his caustic managerial style, and the toll that burnout takes as Musk struggles to deliver on promises of a fantastical future. Isaacson had total access to Musk himself, and, throughout the narrative, features perspectives from dozens of people in Musk’s inner circle (or formerly close with him) on exactly what makes the man tick.
Musk split with his first wife, Justine Musk, in 2008, after the relationship devolved into constant and bitter verbal fights, with Musk saying things like, “If you were my employee, I would fire you” or calling her an “idiot,” Justine told Isaacson. She also recalled once trying to explain the concept of empathy to Musk, but he said his lack of such a quality gave him an advantage when it came to running major companies. He also grew irritated by her suggestions that he try therapy, and blamed her own anger on Adderall, which a psychiatrist had prescribed to her for attention deficit disorder. Justine Musk said that although the drug was “an amazing help” for her, Elon “would go around the house throwing away the pills” that he believed were contributing to their marital strife.
Editor’s picks, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, 25 most influential creators of 2024, how tesla freshened up a major california freeway, x hate speech is so common that celebs like john cena follow white nationalists, trump needs elon musk’s money — but still thinks he’s a ‘boring’ weirdo, here are the people who lost millions backing musk's twitter takeover, musk’s cold calculations on autopilot-involved deaths.
Tesla’s Autopilot has been involved in hundreds of car crashes and at least 17 fatalities , with such accidents surging along with increased use of the system. Surely, Musk’s habit of exaggerating what it can do hasn’t helped. Though when it comes to Autopilot-involved deaths, he doesn’t seem to think they matter much in the grand scheme, believing the tech “should be judged not on whether it prevented accidents but instead on whether it led to fewer accidents.” After the first two reported Autopilot-involved fatalities in 2016, Musk did not immediately issue a statement, and Isaacson notes that he “could not understand why one or two deaths caused by Tesla Autopilot created an outcry when there were more than 1.3 million traffic deaths annually.” He then got angry during a press conference where reporters opened with questions about those accidents, firing back that they were the ones “killing” people if they turned public sentiment or government regulators against autonomous driving systems.
In 2017, Musk gave an interview to Neil Strauss for a Rolling Stone cover story . He seemed distracted from the beginning and walked out on Strauss, coming back several minutes later to explain that he had recently broken up with his girlfriend, actress Amber Heard . Later in the conversation, Musk spoke unforgivingly of his estranged father, Errol Musk. “He was such a terrible human being,” Musk said. “Almost every evil thing you could possibly think of, he has done.” He didn’t offer specifics at the time, but Isaacson reveals that shortly before this, Musk had learned that in 2016, Errol had impregnated Jana Bezuidenhout, a woman more than four decades younger, whom Errol had raised as his stepdaughter. Elon and his siblings were profoundly disturbed by the news, which seemed to weigh on him during his talk with Strauss, who wrote, “There is clearly something Musk wants to share, but he can’t bring himself to utter the words.”
An unexpected consequence of smoking weed on joe rogan’s show.
Musk’s 2018 appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience was intended to be a bit of damage control at a precarious time for the CEO, who was seen as increasingly erratic. So, naturally, when Rogan offered him a toke on a tobacco-and-cannabis blunt, he confirmed that it was legal before gamely taking a puff. Even so, Tesla investors were rattled as the image of Musk wreathed in pot smoke went viral, and the company’s share price tumbled to almost its lowest point that year. There was one other, hidden ramification, too: “SpaceX was a NASA contractor, and they are big believers in the law,” Musk is quoted as saying in the biography. That meant, for the next couple of years, he was subject to random drug tests. “Fortunately,” he said, “I really don’t like doing illegal drugs.”
Throughout their courtship and co-parenting journey, Musk and occasional girlfriend Grimes have had their share of blowups, some of them sparked by truly unusual behavior. In 2021, for example, he was obsessed with the civilization strategy game The Battle of Polytopia , which in time began to distract him from work meetings and social events. Grimes started playing as well, noting that video games are one of Musk’s only outlets for relaxation, but, she said, “he takes those so seriously that it gets very intense.” In one game they played together, having agreed to an alliance, she betrayed him with a surprise attack, triggering “one of our biggest fights ever.” When she tried to argue it was only a game and not a big deal, he said, “It’s a huge fucking deal,” and didn’t speak to her for the rest of the day. On the flip side, Grimes was angry with Musk when he sent a photo of her having a C-section during childbirth to friends and family, without her consent. “He was just clueless about why I’d be upset,” she told Isaacson.

At the end of 2022, as Musk tried to get Twitter under control in the wake of a contentious acquisition, he expressed an alarming opinion of a humanitarian crisis in China. Talking to reporter Bari Weiss, Isaacson writes, he said that “Twitter would indeed have to be careful about the words it used regarding China, because Tesla’s business could be threatened.” He also told her that the country’s repression of the Uyghurs, a mostly Muslim minority group, had two sides. The Chinese government is placing this population in concentration camps and has been widely accused of crimes against humanity with the U.S. even going so far as to call it “ genocide .”

There are few who personally endure Elon Musk who don’t end up finding him uniquely off putting. That includes his political ally, former President Donald Trump, who is also nowadays increasingly relying on billionaires like Musk to use their considerable fortunes to put him back in the White House.
Trump has publicly cozied up to the Tesla CEO — telling rallygoers “I love Elon Musk” and touting the support of the world’s richest man. Trump has floated giving Musk an adviser or cabinet role in his administration. He also recently participated in an embarrassing, glitch-ridden X Spaces conversation with Musk.
None of that means that Trump actually likes Musk. According to a person close to the twice-impeached convicted felon, Trump “thinks he’s weird. Sorry to use a word used a lot by Democrats now.” This source has spoken to the former president about Musk as recently as July. Another source, who has been in the room multiple times over the years when Trump has spoken privately about Musk, relays to Rolling Stone that Trump has at times, as recently as in the past few months, said that Musk is “boring,” annoying, and prone to mood swings.
That may sound rich, coming from Donald J. Trump, who is arguably all three of those things to a galling degree. Still, it underscores Trump’s own ability to recognize the inherent weirdness or unpopular traits of some of his most prominent political backers. For instance, Trump has long understood, in a way that many conservative leaders have not, that it is imperative for the GOP’s electoral successes that Republicans relentlessly about what their plans are on abortion, because most Americans find their views repulsive.
In the past, Trump and Musk have publicly feuded, with the former gratuitously insulting the latter, in part because Musk said it was time to move on from Trump in 2022 and supported Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis’ 2024 Republican primary bid.
“When Elon Musk came to the White House asking me for help on all his many subsidized projects,” Trump wrote in 2022, “whether it’s electric cars that don’t drive long enough, driverless cars that crash, or rocketships to nowhere, without which subsidies he’d be worthless, and telling me how he was a big Trump fan and Republican, I could have said, ‘drop to your knees and beg,’ and he would have done it.”
Around that same time, Trump also called Musk a “bullshit artist.”
Nowadays, they’ve patched things up and formed an explicit political alliance. Musk is spearheading a Super PAC supporting Trump’s presidential campaign. It’s not clear how much Musk has donated to the effort — he repeatedly denied a report that he planned to donate $45 million per month to the group, after Trump bragged about it at a rally — but the Super PAC has already spent $37 million to help Trump secure a second term.
In the last two weeks, it’s ramped up spending, dropping more than $16 million on outreach.
Sources note that while Trump obviously says some nicer things privately about Musk now, he still sometimes peppers in his ruder assessments. Indeed, even publicly, Trump’s true feelings find ways of trickling out on occasion. The former president recently described Musk as “a very different kind of a guy,” which sources close to Trump describe as not a compliment.
When asked about the reporting on the harsher private words Trump has had for Musk recently, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung simply tells Rolling Stone the former president and Musk “agree on the big issues facing our country, and that Kamala Harris must be stopped before she completely destroys America,” adding: “That’s why so many people from all political backgrounds have united behind President Trump to Make America Great Again.”
But the former president’s change of tone when it comes to Musk, especially compared to two years ago, is blatantly transactional. If Trump defeats Vice President Kamala Harris in November, one of the main reasons why will be because of Musk’s money.
A Trump victory could be a big financial win for Musk. Harris has proposed a wealth tax on households worth more than $100 million, as well as an increase in the corporate tax rate, which Trump slashed as president. Musk, worth a reported $247 billion , posted on X that Harris’ economic agenda “leads to bread lines and ugly shoes.”
Trump, meanwhile, is pitching to wealthy donors that they need to fund him so he can protect their tax cuts, and cut the corporate tax rate even further.

Former President Donald Trump says he would put Elon Musk in his cabinet if the world’s richest person had the bandwidth, adding that that it was likelier that he’d involve the Tesla Inc. and SpaceX chief executive officer as a federal cost-cutting consultant.
“I’d put him into cabinet, absolutely, but I don’t know how he could do that with all the things he’s got going,” said Trump, speaking in an interview with former Navy Seal Shawn Ryan and praising Musk as a genius. “But he could sort of, as the expression goes, ‘consult’ with the country and give you some very good ideas, like on AI,” he said.
“What he really would like to do is get involved in cutting some of the fat, and he does know how to do it,” Trump added, in the interview posted online Monday.
The musings are the latest chapter in the Trump-Musk saga, which also included a lengthy, albeit glitchy, discussion between the two earlier this month on Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. In that, Musk — who has increasingly aligned himself with right-leaning figures and causes — called for a government commission reviewing federal expenditures.
“I’d be happy to help out on such a commission,” he said.
Trump said he’s in favor of the idea, labeling Musk the “greatest cutter.”

As of Aug. 26, the Trump-Musk interview had been viewed more than 275 million times, according to X, though that figure captures users who simply scroll past it. Actual audience size, particularly extended viewership, is likely far lower. Trump instead said it was higher, telling Ryan that he heard 750 million people — more than double the US population — listened to his chat with Musk.
Musk endorsed Trump for president last month. He also created a super political action committee to support Trump’s reelection effort.

Musk has taken on a more active role in Washington in recent years, with his companies boasting sizable government contracts. Musk is poised to be an even bigger player if Trump returns to power. He’s grown closer to the GOP nominee, advising him on electric vehicles and cryptocurrency policy — a reversal from a once-rocky relationship that saw the two publicly trade insults.

Listen to the story of Cyril Ramaphosa's rise to presidential power, narrated by our very own Alec Hogg.
Texas is popular for many reasons.
The second-largest US state is the birthplace of the iconic musician Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter as well as NFL star Michael Strahan and actresses Selena Gomez and Reneé Zellweger.
It's also home to a beloved football team, the Dallas Cowboys , and internationally famous festivals including South by Southwest (SXSW).
Beyond its cultural significance, Texas has a reputation for its affordability , largely due to its relatively lower cost of living and absence of state income tax. This personal-finance appeal, combined with a business-friendly environment, has attracted entrepreneurs and their companies over the years.
Word has gotten out — and cities in the Lone Star State often lead lists of top places Americans are moving to.
According to a Business Insider analysis of individual-level data from the Census Bureau's 2022 American Community Survey , over 668,300 people moved to Texas between 2021 and 2022, the most recent time period for which data is available. This makes Texas the second-most popular destination in the US for movers, just behind Florida , which had about 739,000 inbound movers during the same period.
Among the hordes of movers to Texas are several celebrities. This reflects a broader trend of wealth realignment in the United States, where even the proverbial Joneses are moving to areas where their money goes further and the weather is more favorable.
Consider supermodel Bella Hadid , who moved to Fort Worth, Texas, this year to live with her professional horseman boyfriend, Adan Banuelos. Actress Emma Stone and comedian and podcast host Joe Rogan have decamped from LA to Austin in recent years.
Many other stars have also relocated to Texas.
Business Insider has compiled a list of 11 notable celebrities and businesspeople who have moved themselves — and in some cases, their businesses — to the Lone Star State.
The list is presented in alphabetical order by last name.
After spending most of her life jet-setting around the world trying to conquer the modeling industry, Hadid decided recently to take some time away from the spotlight.
In early 2024, she spoke to Allure about moving to Texas to focus on her mental and physical health (she was diagnosed with Lyme Disease in 2013), and be with her cowboy boyfriend Adan Banuelos.
"Just as I have styled myself for years now — which I still do — I love being able to do my own hair and makeup, be happy with how I look, and get ready with my girlfriends here in Texas," Hadid told Allure . "We have the best time, and I never feel like I need to do too much."
"For the first time now, I'm not putting on a fake face. If I don't feel good, I won't go. If I don't feel good, I take time for myself. And I've never had the opportunity to do that or say that before," Hadid added. "Now when anybody sees me in pictures and they say I look happy, I genuinely am. I am feeling better; my bad days now were my old good days."
In July, Elon Musk vowed to move two of his companies, X and SpaceX , out of California and into Texas. He already moved Telsa to Texas in 2021.
In 2020, Musk announced that he had already moved to Texas himself at The Wall Street Journal's CEO Council summit .
Musk has claimed to own a tiny home in Texas , and records show he bought a house in Austin in 2022.
Stone, who gave birth to her first child in 2021, was looking to settle down away from the grind of California life.
In 2022, the two-time Oscar winner and her husband, David McCary, bought a several-million-dollar, four-bedroom property on 1.2 acres in Austin , according to celebrity real-estate website Dirt.com, which is now part of Robb Report.
Like many other celebs, Rogan left Los Angeles once the pandemic hit.
In a 2023 episode of his popular podcast, "The Joe Rogan Experience," he explained why he ended up in Texas.
"Then we went to the lake, and people are playing music and jumping in the water," said Rogan, adding that his kids "were like, 'We want to live here!'"
"That was it. Two months later I lived here," he said in the podcast episode.
Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey and wife Camila Alves settled in Austin in 2012 after buying a 10,800-square-foot mansion.
According to a 2024 profile in Southern Living , the move to Texas was initially because of a "family crisis," when he needed to help his mother and two brothers. The couple decided to stay put and raise their three children there.
"Ritual came back," McConaughey said of being back in Texas. "Whether that was Sunday church, sports, dinner together as a family every night, or staying up after that telling stories in the kitchen, sitting at the island pouring drinks and nibbling while retelling them all in different ways than we told them before."
A year after renewing his vows with his wife Kimberly in Austin, the "Dawson's Creek" star moved the whole family there.
They now live on a 36-acre property.
"We wanted to get the kids out of Los Angeles," Van Der Beek told Austin Lifestyle in 2021 . "We wanted to give them space and we wanted them to live in nature."
The "Twisters" star , who is also a native Texan, moved back to Austin from Los Angeles recently to be close to his family and for his own mental health.
"When all you do is consume movies and entertainment, you could become a little self-aware and maybe derivative of yourself," Powell told USA Today . "Your personal life, there's no sort of freedom there, there's storytelling around that, and I feel like that's just not good for you on the long term."
"The Sopranos" star moved to Austin in 2021 with her family, husband Cutter Dykstra and sons Beau and Jack.
"I almost feel more connected to my craft and why I love acting," Sigler told The New York Times in 2021 . "When the calls come in, it's a beautiful surprise. I'm still on things and I'm still a businesswoman and it's still my career, but I don't feel the pressure around it because we took a stand for ourselves and we made decisions for our families."
A native of Texas, Duff decided with her fiancé Matt Rosenberg to pack up the kids and leave California once the pandemic hit.
At first, she was nervous that the move would hurt her career.
"I think so much of my fear of moving out of Los Angeles was that my career was there and that I would never work again or something like that," she told Fox News Digital in 2022. "And, you know, I think this has all taught us that Zoom certainly can be a very powerful tool. And we can, you know, very luckily for me, get to continue to work from here, and I get to live near my dad. I haven't lived, here, near my dad in a really long time."
The star has enjoyed visiting Austin for decades but finally decided to live there in 2020.
"I love it. I've been coming here for 20 years," he told "Live with Kelly and Ryan" in 2020 . "I'm much closer to my mom and everybody. I love it. It's great."
The son of Clint Eastwood, Scott has been methodically building his own career, showing up in the "Fast and Furious" franchise and Guy Ritchie movies.
During his downtime in Texas, he does everything from fishing to hunting.
"I think that's why people who come to Texas really can fall in love with it," he told Flaunt in 2021 from his home in Austin. "There's more community, people are more neighborly, people are nice. It slows life down a little bit. It's not this fast-paced living in a big city like New York or Los Angeles."
