Description

Action research is a common journey for graduate students in education and other human science fields. This book attempts to meet the needs of graduate students, in-service teachers, and any other educators interested in action research and/or self-study. The chapters of this book draw on our collective experiences as educators in a variety of educational contexts, and our roles guiding educator/researchers in various settings. All of our experiences have enabled us to question and refine our own understanding of action research as a process and means for pedagogical improvement. The primary purpose of this book is to offer clear steps and practical guidance to those who intend to carry out action research for the first time. As educators begin their action research journey, we feel it is vital to pose four questions: 1) What is action research, and how is it distinct from other educational research?; 2) When is it appropriate for an educator to conduct an action research project in their context?; 3) How does an educator conduct an action research project?; 4) What does an educator do with the data once the action research project has been conducted? We have attempted to address all four questions in the chapters of this book.

Sandra Espino

This research project forms part of a doctoral thesis and was designed to understand how reading and writing processes are used as learning instruments in educational contexts and the ways in which these instruments improve learning. From our perspective (Gràcia, M., Solé, I., Miras, M., Castells, N.; 2005; Solé, I.; Castells, N.; Gràcia, M.; Espino, S., 2006; Solé, I., Mateos, M., Martín, E., Miras, M., Cuevas, I., Castells, N., Gràcia, M., 2005) note-taking is one of the most frequently used tools by students in higher education. The present study sets out to analyse some elements of this instrument, to identify the relation between certain variables involved in the conditions in which it is used, specifically the relation between the type of notes taken by students and the uses they make of them, on the one hand, and their learning approach, on the other, when they are working on a specific academic task.

Edin Dziko Mehmedovic

Most of the learning tasks students engage in are, to a greater or lesser extent, tasks involving reading and writing. At university and in secondary education the tasks requiring students to consult, compare and integrate information from various diverse sources start to become more common and frequent than at lower educational levels (Mateos, Villalón, De Dios & Martín, 2007; Solé et al., 2005). Exploring and integrating various sides of an issue in order to reach a reasoned written synthesis may require a particular way of conceiving the nature of knowledge and its acquisition through reading and writing; in other words, it may be affected by the type of epistemological, reading and writing beliefs the student holds. This is a topic that has so far been little explored and, when it has been, the role of epistemological beliefs, reading beliefs and writing beliefs has been analysed separately. That is why we set about investigating the role played by the three types of beliefs together when the learning task involves the co-ordinated use of reading and writing.

The Chosen We: Black Women’s Empowerment in Higher Education

This is a purple book cover. The image on the cover is Disagreement by Theola Jane Goosby. The cover reads: The Chosen We: Black Women's Empowerment in Higher Education.

IRH Fellow:

Rachelle Winkle-Wagner (Race, Ethnicity, and Indigeneity Fellow, 2018-2019)

The Chosen We  elevates the oral histories of 105 accomplished, college-educated Black women who earned success despite experiencing reprehensible racist and sexist barriers. The central argument is that these women succeeded in and beyond college by developing a  Chosen We —a community with one another. The book builds on their words and insights to offer a powerful rethinking of educational success that moves away from individualistic and competitive models and instead imagines success as a result of recognizing what people owe to one another. It also uncovers the importance of the type of institutions that students attend for higher education, comparing Black women’s experiences not only by region and era but also by whether they attended a predominantly White institution (PWI) or a historically Black college or university (HBCU).  The Chosen We  features theoretical and methodological exemplars for how to conduct research across lines of difference. The Black women’s oral histories shared here manifest the wisdom from which many groups in the United States might benefit—that liberation is only found through community.

Pride 2024 Protect Our Pride Mini PR Banner

New York, NY – Monday, June 3, 2024 – GLAAD , the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, today announced Pride 2024: Protect Our Pride , with resources, programs, initiatives designated to enhance dialogue around Pride Month, and centering on lived experiences of LGBTQ people and the ongoing fight for the freedom to live and love without discrimination or prejudice, in a time when the LGBTQ community is under unprecedented attack. GLAAD has also launched a community resource hub, a limited-edition Protect Our Pride popup shop and a digital tool kit at GLAAD.org/PRIDE .

Despite more than 500 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced across the country this past legislative session, threats of violence against LGBTQ people, a global terror alert , and demonizing rhetoric online running rampant and unchecked, the tide is shifting: So far, more than 200 of these bills have been defeated, while two dozen were signed into law. Federal courts in at least seven states have ruled against bans on healthcare for transgender people or blocked them from being enacted as of early 2024 , including rulings by three Trump-nominated justices.

Current Gallup polling also indicates record-high support for the freedom to marry (71%), and nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ people (84%). More than 7% of U.S. adults are out as LGBTQ, including 20% of Gen Z, the most out generation in history. A projected 14% of voters will be out as LGBTQ by 2030.

Quote from GLAAD President & CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis: “America is at a critical juncture when it comes to LGBTQ safety and support. At GLAAD, we know that fair and accurate representation in media and journalism have a powerful and measurable effect on the lives of LGBTQ people. While support for LGBTQ equality has reached an all-time high, allyship must now turn into action. This June, media, content creators, and corporate leaders must lead and respond to hate with undeterred support for the LGBTQ community, including LGBTQ employees, shareholders and consumers and protect all that the LGBTQ movement has accomplished.”

GLAAD also announced the launch, continuation and expansion of several programs, campaigns and initiatives to Protect Our Pride :

GLAAD AS A PARTNER IN CORPORATE ALLYSHIP

GLAAD has announced the early release of key data ahead of its upcoming GLAAD 2024 Advertising Visibility Index and GLAAD 2024 State of LGBTQ Inclusivity Efforts in the Advertising Industry . Both reports will show that advertising industry leaders and consumers alike understand the value of partnering with LGBTQ nonprofits for guidance. 2023 saw two high-profile cases of brands succumbing to out-of-touch but loud anti-LGBTQ extremists targeting companies for their LGBTQ-inclusive marketing.

This year, however, a majority of corporate executives and Fortune 500 leaders reported to Gravity Research that they are not planning changes to their Pride strategy for 2024.

Previously released GLAAD research found that inclusion, when done effectively and with unwavering support for the communities they represent, is good for the bottom line. GLAAD research continues to show that a majority of consumers supported LGBTQ brand engagement during Pride Month, but especially beyond June.

Along with briefings, workshops, and consultancy with corporate partners, the program also measures the quality and quantity of LGBTQ inclusion in advertising.
