Last updated: June 04, 2024

Applied psychology takes all our findings from scientific study and aims to take these principles, concepts and methods and turn them into real-life results.  Here experts recommend books on all angles of applied psychology.

Clinical psychologists, through cognitive, behavioural or analytic therapies, hope to make us happier and better able to cope with distressing events in our lives. Family and relationship psychologists use talking therapies to help us better communicate with our nearest and dearest. Other applied psychologists offer specialist insight into the human mind to those working in fields like business, police investigation, town planning and education.

Applied psychologists ask questions like: What qualities make a good leader or manager? What stops criminals reoffending? How can we harness what we know about the human mind to repair failing relationships or toxic work environments?

We've spoken to experts like the relationship therapist and bestselling author Mira Kirschenbaum  and educational psychologist Jacqueline Leighton , asking them to recommend the best books in their specialist fields of applied psychology.

The best books on Disagreeing Productively , recommended by Ian Leslie

The enigma of reason: a new theory of human understanding by dan sperber & hugo mercier, knowing mandela: a personal portrait by john carlin, the five percent: finding solutions to seemingly impossible conflicts by peter coleman, mere civility: disagreement and the limits of toleration by teresa bejan, learning lessons from waco: when parties bring their gods to the negotiation table by jayne docherty.

Many of us avoid conflict in our relationships with family and friends or at work, but that's probably a mistake, says Ian Leslie , author of a number of nonfiction books on human behaviour. Here, he recommends books that offer insight into how to disagree productively, from evolutionary biology to 17th century Rhode Island, from Nelson Mandela to seemingly intractable conflicts.

The best books on Sports Psychology , recommended by Bill Cole

The inner game of tennis by w. timothy gallwey, golf is not a game of perfect by bob rotella, zen putting: mastering the mental game on the greens by joseph parent, heads-up baseball: playing the game one pitch at a time by ken ravizza & tom hanson, the champion’s mind: how great athletes think, train, and thrive by jim afremow.

What do you think about when you’re training at the gym, or on the tennis court? And what should you think about, if your goal is maximizing performance and results? Seasoned sports psychologist Bill Cole , coach for numerous Olympic teams and top-level international athletes, reveals that the number one road block to athletic performance often isn’t physical—it’s overthinking.

Clinical psychologists look at how we feel, how that affects how we behave, and whether we can change. Here, the Oxford academic and clinician Susan Llewelyn discusses five key books in the field of clinical psychology, why clinicians must keep their minds open to new approaches, and why aspiring psychologists should read as many novels as they can.

The best books on Emotional Intelligence , recommended by Daniel Goleman

We are taught to value intelligence and academic ability, but raw mental firepower does not always translate into success at work or a life of contentment. Just as important are the skills that make up 'emotional intelligence,' says Daniel Goleman , whose bestselling book popularised the concept. Here he chooses five emotional intelligence books that explore its practical applications.

Advanced Research Methods for Applied Psychology provides a comprehensive discussion of 21 key topics for the completion of an applied psychology (or similar) research thesis/project.

The book provides a one-stop shop for the current issues and discussions of key research methods and common statistical analysis techniques, but avoids being a step-by-step instruction guide. The book is divided into four sections, representing the stages of thesis completion: getting started, data collection, data analysis, and reporting research. Each chapter presents a detailed scholarly discussion on a topic and represents the most up-to-date reference for that topic. The Chapters also provide key references for further detailed readings and guides. The chapters are authored by leading researchers from all around the world. This book discusses both emerging and traditional research methods commonly utilised within applied psychology research projects and directly assists early researchers in providing an informed discussion of their decisions relating to their choice of, for example, research sampling, the use of diary studies, appropriate survey time-lags, conducting systematic reviews, and the macro and micro process issues involved with conducting organisational interventions.

This book is an important reference text for applied psychology research thesis/project students and researchers, including both undergraduate and postgraduate students. It will be of interest to applied psychology researchers in all fields (clinical, organisational, developmental, forensic, etc.) and to those in other disciplines. The book provides coverage of advanced research methods and statistical topics and is suitable for adoption for these courses in honours/post-graduate levels of study within applied psychology and related fields.

About the author

Paula nicolson.

My 4th novel - 'The Broken Couch' - involves the story of a fictional psychoanalyst who worked with the Nazi prisoners on trial for war crimes. It also features Dr. Wilson Coffey the reluctant spy - the hero of my first novel, 'Containment'.

My novels, 'Bystander' and 'Believe Me' feature Dr Nancy Strong, a psychological profiler who becomes an academic head of department where envy, betrayal and death linger just under the surface of this majestic institution.

Most of my working life has been as an academic psychologist - a career that I thoroughly enjoyed. Working at a university involves writing books and articles as well as teaching students but I now love the challenge of writing fiction.

The books based on my research feature domestic abuse, women's sexuality, motherhood, depression, and gender and power conflicts at work.

The 2nd edition of my book Genealogy, Psychology and Therapy: Uncovering Trauma was published by Taylor and Francis in 2022. It explores how trauma is transmitted across generations influencing who you really are.
