Kind of liked it. little different storyline. Arulnidhi's performance is decent enough. The reason why the girl was murderned at the hospital is not convincing. Decent watch

If you assume, that the movie is written and directed by few debutants, than certainly u should watch and appreciate. We need sch movies, but in a better way. Otherwise we would be flooded with clich&eacute; movies like Annathe! <br/>Coming to the movie, the first half was interesting. I wish they maintained the same mood throughout... When the second half explains all the strange Dejavu moments, the viewer goes crazy. Viewer would need to be bribed to accept the illogical, impossible things shown on screen. Some sequences were confusing to me as well, maybe thats my non native Tamil knowledge and bad subtitles!! <br/>Even in the first half, some dialogues were too childish, like the colleague explaining multiple times about why she hired an OLA cab!!.. <br/>Pros<br/>Interesting premise.<br/>Performance by certain actors - the writer for instance<br/>No masala

Déjà vu review: Arulnithi-starrer investigative thriller checks all the boxes and never wastes audience's time

Déjà vu review: filmmaker arvind srinivasan's directorial debut boasts of some smart twists. the thriller predominantly works due to its focused storytelling..

Arulnithi, who has quietly carved his own space with his unique choice of films, has evolved as the go-to actor for thriller-based subjects in Tamil cinema . His latest release Déjà vu, by debutant filmmaker Arvind Srinivasan, is a decent investigative thriller that boasts of some smart twists and predominantly works due to its focused storytelling. The film manages to check all the boxes that one usually associates with a watchable thriller. Also read: O2 movie review: Nayanthara’s film is a decent survival thriller

Déjà vu directed by Arvind Srinivasan, stars Arulnithi Tamilarasu.

The film opens with a novelist (Achyut Kumar) storming into a police station in the middle of the night, completely drunk, to file a complaint about harassment calls. He claims that the characters from his latest work are coming to life and calling and threatening him. He files a written complaint but given his drunk condition, the police officials don’t take him seriously.

Next morning, police rush to the writer’s house and take him into custody on the basis of a call to the control room from a woman the previous night who claims that the writer has something to do with her kidnapping. Upon further investigation, it is revealed that the Deputy General of Police’s ( Madhoo Shah ) daughter is missing and the police believe it could be the same person who called the control room. Clueless about how to handle the case and to ensure her emotions don’t overtake her decision, the DGP appoints special officer Vikram Kumar (Arulnithi) to investigate the case.

At just about two hours long, Déjà vu never wastes a minute and that really works in the film’s favour as it keeps audiences hooked till the very last minute. Its taut narration is one of the major highlights and this works even when the story takes a few predictable turns to eventually impress with the big twist towards the end. This is one of those rare films with no heroine and this saves the viewers from any silly romantic subplot. The novelist’s premonition angle works very well in creating suspense from the very first frame. It’s an original idea that’s built well and weaved into the story seamlessly to make the proceedings as gripping as possible.

Arulnithi as the investigative officer is a smart pick, and he plays his part quite convincingly. Madhoo gets a meaty part and her character goes through a very interesting transformation phase which most can’t see coming. As far as a thriller goes, Déjà vu manages to impress to a large extent and leaves hardly any room for complaints.

Director : Arvindh Srinivasan

Cast : Arulnithi, Madhoo, Achyuth Kumar and Kaali Venkat

Dejavu |

Dejavu |

Dejavu |

Dejavu |

Dejavu Movie Review: A Half-Decent Setup Gets Lost In A Sea of Contrivances

Dejavu Movie Review: A Half-Decent Setup Gets Lost In A Sea of Contrivances

Cast:  Arulnithi, Madhoo, Achyuth Kumar, Ragav Vijay, Smruthi Venkat, Chetan, Kali Venkat

Director:  Arvindh Srinivasan

It might not be an entirely original idea but it's kind of cool for a thriller to begin with a pulp fiction writer confessing to a police officer that he's being hounded by the fictional characters he's written. It's part Stranger Than Fiction, part Weird Science when the whole State of Tamil Nadu waits for novelist Subramani's (Achyut Kumar) every new word to figure out what happened to a missing woman. This isn't just any woman—she's the daughter of the DGP (an out-of-place Madhoo) and the fact that the police cannot track her makes the case sensational for the media and an embarrassment for the force. With this flight of fancy, we're primed for an investigative thriller that needs a sort of magic for the screenplay to move forward.

It's a perfectly workable setup placed in a perfectly workable scenario. By taking the conflict of this writer and by placing it into the context of the whole State machinery, the film makes a vague, esoteric issue into everyone's issue. The writer-director doubles down on this by introducing a secret agent named Vikram (Arulnithi) who the DGP contacts to bring back her daughter and we also get an action sub-plot. On one side is Vikram placing the film in a realistic world with real-world problems, even as the other keeps peeping into Subramani's notes for what's going to happen next.

This is also where the screenplay starts to wobble. After investing so much time for such a setup, you expect the film to go all out and push this conceit to take us new to new places. At first, every word the novelist writes truly matters in the scheme of things, but with each passing scene, it recedes to the background, first as a recurring joke and later, as a complete distraction.

This becomes far more frustrating when the idea is almost entirely abandoned to backtrack on this fantastical idea to make it seem plausible. By doing this, it's removing the only aspect of the film that sets it apart from the hundreds of other films that talk about similar cases and the investigation that follows.

dejavu tamil movie review behindwoods

But this isn't the only issue. The film then transforms into a series of contrivances that are written around giving you one twist after another. For instance, the film breaks for the interval with a corpse being fished out of a lake. Given that the film until then was about finding a missing woman, it's done intentionally to create an event. But the way even this moment is tossed aside, without anything further being mentioned about this body removes any tension the screenplay was about to create for itself. If the film doesn't care about the missing woman, why should we? These contrivances keep coming and somewhere in its effort to shock us, we stop caring anymore even when it has a valid point to make about encounter killings.

Dejavu Movie Review: Logic goes for a toss in this rudderless thriller

Rating: ( 2 / 5).

Debutant Arvindh Srinivasan's Dejavu has an impressive start. A drunk novelist with supposed ESP (Extra Sensory Power) to predict crime scenes, pens a page describing a young girl's kidnap and his fiction turns out to be reality the next day. His predictions are so accurate that he even gets the vehicle numbers of the suspects right, even before they board into one. Though the writer's prediction game is initially fun, the film needed an equally interesting investigation track to keep the momentum going. But, sadly it doesn't. It actually does the opposite, the cumbersome investigation turns the tables and the one predicting the forthcoming event is the audience, not the writer in the story. Cast: Arulnithi, Madhoo, Achyuth Kumar, Kali Venkat, Smruthi Venkat Director: Arvindh Srinivasan

It is disappointing that the scenes which manage to escape this predictability are the ones where logic goes for a toss and the audience is taken for granted. In an attempt to make the twists unguessable Arvindh sabotages the little he had built till then by making his leads react in unusual ways and take the oddest decisions. For instance, in an ideal world, the writer would have been taken into custody within hours and the secret behind the ESP would be out in minutes. But here the DGP appoints a dull PC to overview the writer as he happily pens the crime scenes, sipping a glass of booze.

The penultimate reveals towards the end of the whodunit, makes us wonder more about 'Whys' and 'hows'. And the tool the filmmaker uses to drop these reveals is monologues! Almost every main character goes on a confession spree as if they were waiting for their turn in a queue.  Had the filmmaker opted to show things visually instead of making his characters recite them, the damage would have been considerably dampened.

Achyuth Kumar and Arulnithi's invested performances and Ghibran's terrific score are perhaps the only elements that keep us invested in this unengaging ride. Casting a limited actor like Madhoo in a role with layers does take an extra toll on the overall film.

For those unaware, Dejavu was shot parallel in Telugu as Repeat , starring Naveen Chandra in Arulnithi's role. Sadly, significant chunks of the Telugu portion have been retained for the Tamil version too. This only adds more to the misery.

Dejavu has been titled so to denote the series of events that repeat themselves after a year, exactly on the same day. But the abysmal screenplay and staging of the film give us the Deja Vu of a dozen woeful thrillers that we remember for all the wrong reasons.

Dejavu Movie Review (2022)

Arulnithi's dejavu tamil movie review - film directed by arvindh srinivasan.

Dejavu Movie Review in English

Dejavu Movie Cast & Crew

Arulnithi's next outing in Kollywood, Dejavu has released in cinemas today and it is a crime thriller directed by debutant Arvindh Srinivasan. Achyuth Kumar, Madhubala, Mime Gopi, Kaali Venkat, and Smruthi Venkat form the supporting cast. So, how has the film fared? Read on to know!

STORY:  DGP Asha Pramod's (Madhubala) daughter Pooja (Smruthi Venkat) gets kidnapped by unidentified men and the following incidents after the kidnap happens exactly as predicted by a crime novelist (Achyuth Kumar). Whatever the novelist writes, it happens in real life, making the case look more puzzled and mysterious. An undercover cop named Vikram Kumar (Arulnithi) is assigned the case to resolve the mystery and find Pooja. How did the writer manage to predict every single development of the kidnap and did Vikram Kumar solve the case forms the rest of the plot.

SCREENPLAY, DIALOGUES & DIRECTION:  Debut director Arvindh Srinivasan has got a promising premise in hand and it is definitely a story that has got the potential to be converted into celluloid. The film starts off on an impressive note and it piques our curiosity. A crime novelist writer comes to a Police station to file a complaint that his fictional characters exist in real life and they commit the crimes exactly how it has been written in the book. This idea definitely has your interest and the first half keeps you glued. However, the fizz is not maintained throughout. The film has inconsistent pacing with a mix of flat scenes followed by some well-written and executed scenes.

The second half is where the lag is felt and the film falls flat after a point. Too much information is fed in the last 20 minutes and as a result, the final act looked quite hurried. Over a point, it feels like you obviously know a twist is coming up. The story holds a certain level of suspense and the way each knot is untied in the screenplay is a job well done. Despite lacking believability and logic, especially the climax, the twists might sell well with the general audiences.

With more confined writing in the screenplay and better execution, Dejavu would have been a highly compelling mystery thriller, but what we have got is a lesser impactful version of the same. The problem with Dejavu is that what sounded exciting and intriguing on paper doesn't really translate with the same impact on-screen, especially the most important climax reveal.

CAST:  Arulnithi delivers a measured performance as the undercover cop Vikram Kumar and he does his part convincingly. However, we get a sense of dejavu indeed as we have seen him in similar kind of stories and situations already in the past. It is probably time for the talented actor to shift gears and be a part of stories of other genres.

Achyuth Kumar is one of the most interesting casting choices and he pulls off the role on an impressive note. Due credits to MS Bhaskar for his excellent dubbing. Madhubala's performance is quite okay, but she doesn't seem to sit perfectly for the role of Asha Pramod. Kaali Venkat leaves his mark with the limited screen time that he gets. The rest of the fresh faces in the film could have put out better performances.

TECHNICAL:  PG Muthiah's cinematography is definitely one of the positive aspects of Dejavu and the framings are neat and the colours contribute to the mood of the film. Ghibran's music tries to add more tension to the scenes and some of them succeed in its mission. The score might remind you of Ghibran's previous works, especially Ratsasan. The edit work is fine, except for the last segment which could have had a better treatment.     SO?  The promising story and interesting twists save Dejavu to a fair extent.

Verdict: Despite the shortcomings, Dejavu is a watchable, engaging mystery thriller, thanks to its suspenseful story!

Dejavu Movie Review:

The Warrior Review:

Dejavu

Critics Review

Lacks a pinch of salt that could have enhanced its flavors.

Deja Vu had the potential of becoming a mind-blowing film but ends up being a thriller that leaves us with no complaints. (more)

Source: Meera Chithirappavai, MovieCrow

Dejavu, a crime thriller fails to live up to expectations

Arulnithi's performance is good and he has given what the role demands. Madhoo, who plays the role of DGP, tries to hold the film in some places. The film sets the right mood here and there, thanks to its technical aspects, like cinematography and music, by Ghibran, whose background score is powerful and intriguing. Arulnithi's effort to try something inventive is laudable, but Dejavu is certainly not a film you can experience more than once. (more)

Despite the shortcomings, Dejavu is a watchable, engaging mystery thriller, thanks to its suspenseful story!

Arulnithi-starrer investigative thriller checks all the boxes and never wastes audience's time

Arulnithi as the investigative officer is a smart pick, and he plays his part quite convincingly. Madhoo gets a meaty part and her character goes through a very interesting transformation phase which most cant see coming. As far as a thriller goes, Dj vu manages to impress to a large extent and leaves hardly any room for complaints. (more)

GULU GULU MOVIE REVIEW

Gulu Gulu (aka) Guluu Guluu review

Gulu Gulu is a Tamil black comedy written and directed by Rathna Kumar. It has Santhanam, Mariyam George, Pradeep Rawat forming the cast of the film. Circle Box Entertainment produced the film while Red Giant movies bagged the distribution rights.

Google (Santhanam), an outcast, lends his heart and hand for those in need of help and gets himself caught in an eccentric situation.

Santhanam as Google is convincing right from the word go. These are the kind of roles he needed badly. He has finally pulled out the rabbit from his hat which was long due. This Santhanam will be different to people who expect the regular counters from him. Mariyam George and his gang, the PUBG gang, the friends gang score regularly with their peculiar attributes. Pradeep Rawat playing the typical untypical villain makes us hooked to the story. Every character inside the film serves their purpose well. Even a rejected bridegroom and a small school girl is used accordingly.

The selling point of the film would definitely be its quirky one liners, strange situations, writing of Rathna Kumar and the innocence of Google. SaNa scores his part just as he does in every other film. Watch out for the song Anbarey which works very well in tandem with the visuals. The film is non stop in kindling laughter every now and then. It also addresses certain themes that are overlooked in the society including extinction of languages, trauma of Srilankan people, and more importantly the purpose of living.

The writing of Rathna needs to be lauded for the insinuation of darker themes in an otherwise usual screwball comedy. It also should be doctored to cloud the lagging moments in the film. Dialogues are the pillars of Gulu Gulu which makes us laugh as well as contemplate. The film brings out the hero in Santhanam through its brilliant writing. We rise and shout for the cinematic mass moments of our protagonist.

The strength of the film lies in the manifestation of the script onto the screen. Every technical department has contributed to the flawless creation of Gulu Gulu's world. Vijay Karthik Kannan captures what is necessary for the film and outsmarts the script while portraying sensational scenes. SaNa is SaNa in background score which proliferates every feeling that is to be sparked. The good editing by Philomin Raj compliments the writing of the film.

The script moves in different directions which breaks the engagement factor. The second half takes its time to settle which then is brought back by Anbarey song. The film satirizes many pop culture references to invoke laughter which may work only if you know its background. The film is far-fetched at times as it asks us to buy too many things swiftly.

As a whole, the film works very well in delivering its essential core while trying to break conventions. It makes you laugh, laugh and cry when handling issues and laugh, laugh, and laugh when plans collide. This film guarantees a wholesome entertainment for those who don't question the contrived situations.

Venghai is all about the conflict between its three protagonists, Dhanush, his dad Raj Kiran and Prakash Raj and the pendulum this time seems to sway more towards the action side than the sentiment region justifying the tagline of the film.

Although Hari’s films follow a standard template which the movie going audience is well aware of, there would always be interesting knots in the narration that keep the viewer’s interest alive, but in Venghai, these features are very few and the predictability factor takes the pizzaz out from the happenings on screen.

The lengthiness of the film and the logorrhea of the characters are a few factors that work against Venghai. The screen play and the narration travel on an expected course making the fare an unexciting one. Flashes of interest invoking anecdotes do appear like the hiding of counterfeit currency in Raj Kiran’s house and Dhanush’s attempt to thwart the same but they are very few in numbers.

Love in Venghai has been handled well by Hari and the manner in which Dhanush falls in love with Tamannah and their subsequent interactions and the emotions that they go through are very natural and realistic and nowhere do they go overboard.

Most of the sequences involving the confrontation between the three leads give a déjà vu feel from many of Hari’s earlier films and other films too, the key one being the realization of Raj Kiran as Dhanush’s dad by the baddies and their subsequent withdrawal from killing Dhanush, a la Sandakozhi.

The momentum of the film is not uniform with frequent crests and troughs with more of the latter. After a point, the aruvals, the Tata Sumos and the fast moving convoy of vehicles become very tedious.

Dhanush as the affectionate and understanding son presents his role convincingly but there is not enough fodder to satiate his acting prowess. Tamannah appears in homely costumes even in song sequences and comes across as a very somber and matured girl. For Prakash Raj who has done such innumerable roles in his career, his character portrayal in Venghai is just a cakewalk. Rajkiran as the man who commands respect in the village sails through his role. Orvashi and Sudha Chandran (after a long hiatus) deliver a neat performance.

However in the name of comedy, it is Kanja Karuppu who gives the audience arduous times and his high decibeled voice certainly annoys. His tangential comedy tracks and antics also don’t add value to the film.

Despite the songs not being forced in to the narration, but for Kaalankaarthale, others don’t make an impact. And Devi Prasad’s RR is an aural sore, to say the least. Other technical contribution just pass muster and are ordinary.

To sum it all, Venghai is another Hari film with his usual ingredients but sans his usual spirit and this film might work for people who seek action entertainers set in villages.
