The more you upskill, the more specialized you become, and the more you increase your income and ... [+] credibility

Skills trends are constantly evolving. What was in demand several years ago is no longer relevant, or has lost its sense of urgency, today. To thrive in your career at a consistent level, you need to be prepared to adapt...constantly.

Since change can occur almost without warning (look at the AI boom as an example), you should always upskill yourself at least once a year, so you're always current and on top of your career and job, instead of allowing your job or employer to be in control of you.

High-income skills afford just that. They provide you with a cushion which allows you to be flexible and navigate your way through job and business opportunities fairly easily. Since they are in demand, you will find that you will be a more attractive candidate to hiring managers and recruiters, and you will have more leverage as a freelancer.

However, merely possessing high-income skills is not magic sauce. Just like any skill, they need to be honed and developed, but unlike any other skill, the frequency with which they need to be developed is more than you might expect.

Since they occur in industries and markets that tend to shift rapidly (such as technology or marketing), you should try to always stay abreast of trends and changes that might impact your work in some way, in addition to your annual upskilling.

Finally, The Internet Found ‘The Backrooms’

This sprawling kauai resort boasts 50 lush acres and a stunning saltwater lagoon, nsa warns iphone and android users to turn it off and on again.

For example, if you worked in marketing before the AI boom took off, you would have noticed how, within a matter of months, the entire industry and market you serve has changed. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, new AI-powered apps and tools popped up which generate designs, write copy, and can do a host of other things. If you're not careful to upskill so that you can adapt your skills to these changes, you could find yourself obsolete.

The more you upskill, the more of a specialist you become, and the more you increase your credibility and quality of work.

High-income skills pay much because they are either rare, or they provide strong tangible value to the businesses they serve. They solve or tackle a problem that is at the root of the company being able to make more money. Becoming specialized in your high-income skill puts you in a fortunate position to be able to generate unique and creative solutions to problems, and enables you to command higher pay rates and salaries.

If you're wondering where to begin, here are a few you might want to consider learning this year (and remember, you can learn these through bootcamps and online learning platforms, both free and budget-friendly options available):

High-income skills are in-demand skills that tackle a business or industry-centric problem

1. Audio and Video Editing

Who doesn't need an audio or video editor? Every day, millions of production content from videos to podcasts are released for marketing, education, and entertainment, by start-ups and well-established businesses all over the world. And for them to look polished, crisp, and seamlessly professional, they underwent a makeover by video and audio editors. This explains why A/V editors are in high demand, experiencing a 7% surge in job growth, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics .

2. Digital Marketing

Digital marketing is a rapidly evolving and expanding industry, that is projected to grow by 6.87% by the year 2028. Professionals with digital marketing skills are in high demand, with the BLS predicting 6% growth on average in the U.S. Everything is carried out online, from business, to shopping, to entertainment and work, so it makes perfect sense why this is a thriving skill to have.

You can expect to make as much as $124,000 as a digital marketing manager.

  • HubSpot Academy

3. Google Analytics

According to Salary.com, the average you can expect to make with Google Analytics as a skill is $125,593 a year. This skill can be utilized in a variety of roles, from SEO manager, to SEO specialist, and social media analyst.

  • Google Career Certificates (via Coursera)
  • Google Analytics Academy

You can attend free bootcamps and online courses to learn valuable career skills

Have any of these skills piqued your interest? If so, then so long as you have a good internet connection and a laptop, there are literally no excuses to not get started building these high-income skills today.

Online marketing for beginners: 10 paid and free courses to start with

Smiling young African female influencer doing a vlog post at home

In today’s digital marketplace, personalization is king. Hubspot’s The State of Marketing 2024 report underscores this, revealing that 75% of marketers credit personalized experiences with boosting sales and customer loyalty. This strategic focus is reshaping companies’ online narratives, directly influencing a return on investment (ROI) and growth trajectories.

The digital realm demands a deep understanding of consumer behavior, market trends, and keeping up with technological trends and advancements. For those carving out a career in digital or online marketing, you’re in an era where science meets creativity.

UNC Kenan-Flagler Business school logo

UNC Kenan-Flagler’s top-ranked online MBA

Dr. Jonah Berger, a Wharton School professor at the University of Pennsylvania and bestselling author of books like Magic Words and The Catalyst , views the right digital marketing course as a critical piece in the puzzle of success.

“If you already have your product, a class can teach you how to get it to the right customers,” he asserts. Berger emphasizes the versatility of digital marketing education, noting that it can guide entrepreneurs in everything from product design to startup selection.

He advises prospective students to first identify their needs and desired outcomes before choosing a course. “The more that courses help you address a particular tactical need you have, the better off you’re going to be,” he explains. He encourages focusing on “modern marketing” trends such as customer centricity, highlighting the shift towards prioritizing the customer’s perspective over the product or service.

For Berger, truly successful digital marketing lies in “the marriage of data science and behavioral science.” He stresses the importance of understanding customer decision-making while leveraging data for deeper insights. This approach is paramount in a landscape dominated by search engines, social media, and omni-channel marketing strategies.

For those interested in working in the online marketing industry, taking a course can be an effective way to build a solid foundation. Fortune compiled a list of both free and paid online marketing courses you can take on your home computer to help you add the skill to your digital toolbox.

Things to consider before enrolling in an online marketing course

If there’s one takeaway from this article, it’s that there are a lot of options in terms of the kinds of courses you can take. An overwhelming number of options can lead to analysis paralysis, so it’s important to remember that while some courses might sound great, they might not give you the exact results you’re looking for.

Before spending your hard-earned cash or wasting your time with any marketing course, consider these factors:

  • Hands-on practice : According to a report by the U.S. Department of Education ,  the term “hands-on approach” refers to guided instruction through experience. “It’s one thing to hear somebody say something. It can be quite another to make sure you can apply that thing,” Berger says. “It’s important to learn from others, but you need to make sure you can apply those learnings as well.”
  • Reviews : Berger says that word of mouth is another powerful tool in determining what you should spend your money and time on. “When I am making a tough decision, I turn to others—either looking at reviews online or talking with people offline—to understand what other people think and help make better decisions.” Sites like Udemy and Simplilearn provide ratings on the front pages of courses.

So, what is the best online marketing course to take?

The best online marketing course is the one that best suits your needs. While you can scroll through thousands of TikTok and YouTube videos to pick up key information, a structured course can give you the backbone you need to improve your digital marketing skills.

Whether you want to learn for free or for money, there’s an option for everyone. But if you’re still on the fence about taking an online marketing course, hear Berger’s advice:

“Marketing touches almost everything we do—we all have a customer. Brand managers sell products, B2B companies sell services, leaders sell ideas, doctors convince patients to take medicine, lawyers try to convince their clients to take action, and employees try to convince their bosses.”

He explains that whether we interface with our customers, spouses, or children, we aim to understand them and meet them where they are. “It’s about understanding who you’re interacting with and delivering them value.” If that sounds interesting to you, then digital marketing could be a good career path.

Dual Credit Courses and College Prep Academy Coming to TTU K-12

Highly motivated online high school students have an opportunity to earn a diploma and a bachelor’s degree in six years.

Imagine graduating with both a high school diploma and a bachelor's degree in just six years, ready to conquer the world and pursue dreams with confidence.

Texas Tech University and TTU K-12 have teamed up to offer dual credit courses to Texas Tech High School students. The addition of dual credit also brings the unveiling of the six-year Texas Tech University College Preparatory Academy , through which students can earn a high school diploma and bachelor's degree in leadership studies in a compressed timeframe, saving students and their families time and money in the educational process.

Administrators at both institutions understand the value of time and the importance of a quality education, which is why they've designed a comprehensive pathway that allows students to seamlessly transition from high school to higher education and complete a degree in record time.

TTU K-12 Principal Cari Moye says the drive to create this academy came from wanting to offer an advanced track for highly motivated students that truly sets them apart and to partner with university on this innovative program.

“I believe the academic rigor and the learning process of navigating self-paced courses prepares students for their college journey,” Moye said. “Students will be able to choose al a carte (individual courses), or they can apply to be a part of our prestigious College Preparatory Academy that will land them at more than 60 college credit hours upon completion.”

Moye explained students then will have the option to continue online to earn a Bachelor of Science in Leadership Studies if they choose, essentially earning their high school diploma and college degree in only six years.

“Education is the key to unlocking endless possibilities, and at Texas Tech University, we're dedicated to making those possibilities accessible to all,” said Brian Still , vice provost for Texas Tech University Online , the division that houses TTU K-12. “By prioritizing affordability and efficiency, we're laying the foundation for lifelong success and fulfilling our mission to transform lives through education.”

More about Dual Credit

According to a 2010 report by The Texas Tribune, the number of dual credit students — those who take college courses while still in high school — across Texas had ballooned from fewer than 12,000 in 1999 to more than 91,000.

By fall 2021, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) reported more than 186,000 students officially enrolled in dual credit courses across all institutions in Texas.

Texas Tech offers collegiate-level courses for simultaneous college and high school credit for eligible students in its college service area. The university promotes access to academic and workforce education courses while ensuring the content of the courses and the expectations for student performance are truly collegiate. In areas of transcription, credit, application or content, dual credit courses are not differentiated from other college-level courses.

Texas Tech University College Preparatory Academy

Through Texas Tech and TTU K-12's new college prep academy, students enroll in a specific educational track tailored to ninth- and 10th-grade students in Texas Tech High School, staying on that prescribed pathway for the program's duration. After taking a combination of high school courses and dual credit courses, students graduate TTU K-12 and then apply to Texas Tech's Leadership Studies program to finish their last two years (years five and six). Students will have a success coach to answer their questions.

Texas Tech Dual Credit (Individual Courses)

Students in either of the TTU K-12 full-time programs (free tuition or paying tuition) can enroll in dual credit courses approved by their assigned TTU K-12 adviser.  At the end of each course, TTU K-12 will receive a grade from Texas Tech and add credit to the high school transcript. Students will pay individually per course.
