So you’ve decided to enrol onto a doctoral degree and study abroad at the same time. This is a great opportunity to develop yourself both personally and academically. However, do you actually go about securing a PhD as an international student? To help answer this for you, we’ve created this guide to explain how to apply for a PhD in foreign universities.

Why Do Your PhD Abroad?​​​​​​​

There are many benefits to studying abroad.

Some PhD students do so as a way to develop a new language, discover more about a different culture, and to meet new people.

Besides personal reasons, undertaking a doctorate degree abroad can also for academic purposes. For example, in some countries, a particular research field may not be very popular and so there may not be many doctorate options available. In these cases, undertaking a PhD abroad will open up many more opportunities. It could also offer greater funding, lower tuition fees, better laboratory equipment and more experienced supervisors. Not only would these factors result in a more enjoyable PhD, but they could also contribute to greater career prospects. For example, you will likely have more opportunities to write publications, attend conferences and collaborate with other researchers. All of these will help you establish yourself as a respectable researcher within your field.

Is It Difficult to Apply to PhDs Abroad?​​​​​​​

It’s not as difficult as you would imagine when it comes to applying to a PhD in a foreign country. Regardless of whether you’re applying to a university within the EU, such as the UK, Finland or Spain, or to universities within the US or Asia, the processes are relatively similar.

The differences in the application process can be categorised into three areas.

• the documents you need to provide,
• the prerequisite tests you need to sit,
• how much you need to communicate with the potential supervisors before applying.

We’ve provided a basic outline of the application processes below. Although this will provide you with a good starting point, we highly recommend you look at the university websites for specific instructions and guidance before applying.

Will I Need a Student Visa?​​​​​​​

This will depend on what country you are applying to. For example:

• In the UK, applicants from outside the EU will need a Visa Tier 4 (Student). This will allow them to undertake a full-time PhD. However, due to UK visa restrictions, international students are unlikely to be able to enrol onto a part-time degree.
• In Germany, most students will not require a student visa but will require a residence permit.
• In the US, applicants will need to hold an F-1 Student Visa.
• In Asia, the requirements differ depending on the specific country. For example, in China, you will require an X1 Student Visa whereas in Singapore you will require a Student Pass.

Because of the significant differences between countries, we highly recommend it is highly that you check the requirements on an individual case-by-case basis. This is best done by checking the government website of the country you wish to apply to.

General Process for Applying to PhDs Abroad​​​​​​​

When applying to a PhD position, most universities regardless of where they’re located will require:

• Online Application – An electronic form to provide your details and attach all supporting documents. You will also need to make any application fees during this process if required.
• Academic Transcripts – Most universities need a scanned copy of your transcripts when applying. You will only have to submit official hard copies once they have accepted your admission.
• CV – This should include details of your previous education, undergraduate degree and any experiences revenant to the field you’re applying to.
• Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement – A letter which outlines why you’re applying to the PhD and why you believe you’re suitable for the project.
• Letters of Recommendation – this should preferably be provided by your undergraduate degree course tutor or a professor who knows you well.

Language Tests

If your PhD is to be undertaken in English and English isn’t your first language, most universities will require you to sit an English language proficiency test. The most common tests, in order of popularity, are:

• IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems)
• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
• PTE (Pearson Test of English)

The minimum test scores will change from university to university. They will also vary depending on the research field. For example, research projects related to English Literature or Law will require relatively high scores whilst projects in Science and Engineering will require slightly lower scores. To provide an example, the University of Leicester in the UK requires a minimum overall IELTS score of 7 for Law PhDs but has a lower overall score requirement of 6 for Engineering PhDs.

How to Apply for PhDs in EU Countries​​​​​​​

For UK universities, there are generally two ways of applying. You can either apply directly through the university’s website or you can make an application through the UCAS Postgraduate system .

In Spain, Italy and Germany, before applying to a PhD you will first need to pass a pre-application process. This involves checking that your qualifications meet their eligibility requirements. Before undergoing this pre-screening process, it would be beneficial to first speak to your government. They may offer advice on how your countries qualification system corresponds to the qualification system in the country hosting the PhD.

Once you’ve made your application, the university will review it and get in contact with you. For most EU institutions, they will invite you for a Skype or telephone interview with them if they believe you may be a suitable candidate.

If you require a student visa to study in an EU country, it’s recommended that you submit your application at least 3-4 months before the proposed PhD start date.

How to Apply for PhDs in USA

In addition to the English language exams mentioned previously, international applicants will also need to sit additional exams to be eligible for PhDs in the USA. These are the GRE General Exam and GRE Subject Exam(s). The GRE Subject Exam(s) you will need to undertake will be specific to your field and will be specified by the university as part of their edibility requirements.

Securing a PhD position in the United States is considered relatively difficult compared to other countries. As a result, it is commonly recommended that you apply to at least 9 different universities to increase your chances of securing a position.

How to Apply for PhDs in Asia

As Asia covers a wide range of countries such as China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, UAE and India, their application processes naturally differ from one another. Therefore, check the specific application process for each university you’re interested to get the most accurate information.

To summarise:

• China – uses two centralised application services, CUAC and CUCAS. Both these services help international students find and apply to a PhD project in China. Students can also apply directly to a University if they wish to.
• Singapore – rather than applying to a specific research project, you will have to apply to a faculty or department within a University. Only once you have been accepted into the university department will their research projects become available to you. Like US universities, most universities in Singapore will have required you to have sat a GRE Exams prior to applying to them.
• UAE – you must apply directly to your chosen university. To be eligible for a PhD in UAE, you must hold a Master’s degree and it must be from a university recognised by their government. You will also be required to undertake GRE Exams before making your application.

How to Apply for PhDs in Australia

To apply to a PhD in Australia, you will first be expected to find and email a potential supervisor. If you’re an international student and you make an application directly to the university without doing this first, it’s highly likely that you won’t be considered for the position.

Upon discussing the project with the supervisor, they will instruct you to put in a formal application. This formal application will require the information previously outlined above.

Similar to EU institutions, if an Australian university believes you’re a strong candidate, they will likely invite you to a Skype or telephone interview.

Unlike EU universities, PhDs in Australian universities can start at any time of the year. Therefore, unless a specific funding requirement is attached to the project, there are usually no deadlines associated with applying to their PhDs. However, try to apply 3 to 4 months before you intend to start your studies.

What does PhD mean?

A PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy, is the highest possible academic degree you can obtain as a student once you submit a thesis or dissertation.

These are academic papers that you write based on extensive and original research done in a chosen field. 

On average, it can take you up to eight years to complete your PhD. This will change according to the programme, the subjects you’ve picked and the university offering the programme.

What does PhD stand for?

PhD is short for (Ph)ilosophiae (D)octor in Latin. The word “philosophy” comes from the Ancient Greek philosophia, literally translated as “love of wisdom.”

Are PhD students doctors?

You are entitled to use the title “Dr.” once you graduate with a PhD.

They are different from the doctors you see in the hospitals as PhD graduates as social and physical scientists who have conducted and evaluated published research.

Do PhD students get paid?

Yes. They receive a salary, which is also known as a stipend. A higher stipend can help you to cope with an increased cost of living.

Currently, the average cost of living is around 1,000 to 1,600 pounds per month, including rent. This range can change depending on your lifestyle and whether you are staying with a friend.

The increasing cost of living, however, have pushed stipends below the living wage, The Guardian reported.

This has resulted in some candidates struggling to pay rent and forcing them to work part-time jobs.

In June 2022, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) announced that the minimum stipend for UKRI-supported students is due to increase by 2.9% for the 2022-23 academic year.

4 things to consider before studying abroad as a PhD student

1. choosing your research topic.

We get it: you want to write something impactful that you can bring forward in your career. It’s normal to feel stuck when thinking about a research topic . 

Lucky for you, there are many ways to be inspired. You can start by attending conferences.

Even if you don’t have a paper to present, these events can help you source research ideas and connect with experts in the field.

Linkedin is a great alternative, too. Some faculty members share bits of their research topics on the platform. Try typing “#researchtopic” in the search bar and you will be able to filter through the relevant post.

2. Applying for the right student visa

Give yourself ample time to apply for your student visa. We recommend that you read up on how to apply for an  F-1  or  Tier 4 student visa  if you plan to do your PhD in the US and UK, respectively. 

This handy step is crucial to help you avoid any visa delays that can jeopardise your study plans.

One student had his offer to pursue a PhD programme at a Canadian uni withdrawn after being forced to defer his admission  for a third time.

At the time, he had been waiting for his Canadian student visa to come through for 18 months.

Generally, most international students would require a student visa to do their PhD. Do check if there is an agreement between countries that allow citizens to move freely between them.

For example, a PhD student from New Zealand will not need a student visa  to study in Australia.

3. Look for scholarships and financial aids

Lucky for you, there are scholarships for PhD students. Countries like the UK value a strong research culture, so it’s no surprise that many UK unis offer good scholarship packages that cover your cost of living plus an annual stipend or maintenance grant.

Some scholarships even offer you an allowance.

4. Know how to protect your mental health as a PhD student

Mental health among PhD students is poor, according to a  survey  done on postgraduate students in the UK. 

As a PhD student, it can often feel like your wellbeing is slipping away.

Whenever this happens, feel free to reach out to your supervisor.

Aditi Paul  wasn’t afraid to do this while pursuing her PhD at Bowling Green State University. 

“I took a course on statistics for social science. Since it was my first time studying the topic, I would visit my professor during office hours every week,” Paul shares.

“Here, I would ask for more clarification of my weekly assignments to ensure I was on the right track.”

You can also talk to a friend or walk into your uni’s wellbeing office if you feel overwhelmed.

Use an on-campus mental health service, such as counselling, if you need professional help. 

Always remember that there is always someone you can talk to on or off campus.

• First Things First: Choosing the Right Program for Your Interests and Career Goals

So you have decided that you want to earn your Ph.D. abroad. With so many reputable graduate programs available in the United States, how do you choose which one is right for you?

The best way to narrow down your list is through a little advanced research that compares what you want in a program with what a program has to offer:

• First, compile a list of what is important to you in a graduate program. 
• Include your interests, goals, desired areas of research, and the traits that are most important to you in a graduate degree environment. 
• Compare this list to the programs you are considering, and see how they match up. 

Aside from research focus and program specifics, you should also consider degree funding. If you are looking for someone to help you pay for your doctorate through a grant, scholarship, fellowship, trust, or gift of some other kind, where and how much funding you are offered can play a big role in which program you choose. 

Another way to narrow down your choices is to consider the following question: do the program/school’s graduates have careers that I would like to have?

Often, programs will disclose the jobs that their graduates accepted shortly after graduation as well as the careers they hold currently. This can be a good indicator of how well their degree and training prepared them to enter the field.

Here's what a strong ph.d. application looks like for international students.

Your application is a presentation of yourself on paper — your accomplishments, interests, research, and work experience. A strong Ph.D. applicant will meet all of the requirements for admission, and will demonstrate a unique determination to advance their chosen field of study. 

Generally, international applications must submit an online application and application fee, transcripts, english proficiency test scores, GRE test scores and letters of recommendation.

International Requirements

• Complete the online application (Make sure you answer all questions correctly)
• A $75 application fee (collected online)
• Copies of transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended or currently attending (confirm with your program if unofficial transcripts can be used during admissions review).
• Three letters of recommendation 
• Proof of English language proficiency: TOEFL or IELTS scores ( Required for students applying from countries that do not meet SMU’s TOEFL exemption policy)
• Official scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (check department requirements)
• Video essay (Required for some Dedman College applicants)

It is important to note the   application deadlines   so that all your materials are submitted in a timely manner.

English Language Proficiency Exam (TOEFL/IELTS)

The  Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL , and the  International English Language Testing System (IELTS)  evaluate students’ proficiency in four areas of English language skills — reading, writing, listening, and speaking. 

A TOEFL/IELTS score is required of all international applicants from countries where English is not the native language. Why take IELTS/TOEFL?

English proficiency tests are important because they demonstrate your ability to function and learn within the English language, a necessary skill for all Ph.D. students in the U.S. IELTS and TOEFL are both widely used and trusted to be accurate. Due to the strict nature of both tests, you can be sure your score is an accurate representation of your understanding of English. 

 If you score well enough, it might also help you secure a teaching assistantship — and the funding that goes along with it. To serve as a teaching assistant while you earn your Ph.D., your school needs to know that you can accurately communicate the lessons and grade papers and assignments appropriately.

Beyond your academic goals, a good IELTS/TOEFL score can also help you secure a job. Whether you want to work for a multinational company, a government agency or in education, your score will help demonstrate to employers that you have a strong understanding of English. 

Tips for Acing the IELTS/TOEFL

Here are six helpful tips for the IELTS/TOEFL

• Know the test format Having a good grasp of the number of questions, sections, the length of the test, and the types of questions that will be asked will help you to feel more prepared going into the test. The fewer surprises the better, so spend some time learning about what will be on the test.
• Create a study plan Name specific strategies for learning to speak, read, write, and listen in English. You can find many english proficiency test exercises online that will help you outline what and how to study.
• Take as many practice tests as you possibly can Practice tests, especially ones published by the testing companies themselves, will help you familiarize yourself with the material.
• Set a goal score Setting a goal will keep you motivated, focused, and will help you measure your progress throughout your time taking practice tests.
• Enlist support Ask family, friends, tutors, and anyone else to help you practice your English language skills.
• Retake the test Trying again is an option if you leave enough time to retake the test.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

Many graduate programs in the United States require students to submit official scores from the   Graduate Record Examination (GRE) . The GRE is a test that measures a student’s proficiency and skills in several areas, necessary for graduate education. The test focuses on three areas of competency: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. To succeed in taking the GRE, students should   study the structure   and   scoring methodology of the test . 

Students have the option to take the test on paper or online, and should choose the arrangement that works best for them. The test is offered in more than 160 countries, and is administered at 700 test centers around the world. Results can be sent electronically to the program of your choice (SMU’s code is 6660). Most graduate programs require applicants to take the GRE within five years of application.

However, check whether or not your program still requires the GRE . Some programs have opted to be test optional, but English language proficiency test scores are still required by all programs.

Video Essay — Dedman College Applicants Only

A video essay is required for certain Dedman College  Ph.D. applicants. You are required to submit a video essay if:

• You submitted a TOEFL/IELTS speaking score below 23 (TOEFL) or 6.5 (IELTS).
• You are applying to the Statistics or Biostatistics PhD programs.

If you receive a higher score than those listed above, the video essay is optional.

Students should not be nervous about the   video essay portion of the application . This is an opportunity for you to speak directly to your admissions committee via a recorded response about your passions and strengths. The best thing students can do to prepare for the video essay is to practice a lot, and to think about it like a job interview.

How does the video essay work?

Students will be asked to record their answer to just one question. Students can practice as many times as they want, but they are only allowed two chances to record their final answers. Students will be asked one randomized question from one of the following three categories: 

• Interest in SMU and/or their desired degree program 
• Personal characteristics, leadership skills, and activities
• Academic and research experience 

Transcripts

Unofficial transcripts are accepted during the application phase for applicants applying to Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences or the Lyle School of Engineering. Upon admission to SMU, you will need to send official transcripts, certified and translated if from a foreign institution, directly from each school of higher education you attended. Applicants applying to the Meadows School of the Arts or Simmons School of Education and Human Development must provide official transcripts at the time of application. 

Applicants must also provide a copy of their diploma in the original language and in English. The translation of these documents should effectively and accurately explain the title of the course from its native language, so the faculty can understand what it is.

Meadows School of the Arts and Simmons School of Education and Human Development also require transcript evaluations for international applicants. All foreign transcripts must be accompanied by a professional evaluation and an official transcript, including an English translation if it is not in English, and course descriptions or syllabi. Dedman College applicants must provide an official transcript evaluation if they hold a 3-year Bachelor’s degree in order to demonstrate equivalency of a 4-year U.S. Bachelor’s degree.

It is the student's responsibility to procure this evaluation and to assume financial responsibility for it. Because of the importance of this information, SMU only accepts evaluations from the following agencies of proven reliability:

The above services' evaluations should include an explanation that the institution is recognized by the ministry of education in the home country and is generally considered to offer at least the equivalent of U.S. higher education credit. In addition, it should include an explanation of the credits, the grading system and course levels, as well as a course-by-course evaluation.

The expertise and reliability of a professional evaluation report is recognized worldwide and is likely to be accepted by other academic institutions, employers and state licensing boards. However, the report is not binding to SMU and it will be considered a recommendation for SMU's independent decision of the credit to be given. Letters of Recommendation

As part of your application, you will need to  submit three letters of recommendation . When choosing the three individuals who will write your letters of recommendation, you should choose people who know you well and can speak specifically to your accomplishments. Unless you have specific and extensive work experience in your chosen field, the best recommendations for Ph.D. applicants are from academic references. 

Be sure to provide them with all the materials they need to craft your letter, and plenty of time to submit it before the deadline.

Understanding fees, funding, taxes, and visas for international students.

Once admitted, international students must provide a Certification of Finance Form or Letter of Financial Backing as evidence of financial support. A Letter of Financial Backing may be signed by a parent or sponsor, but   must   be certified by a bank. These documents must be notarized and on file with the university to begin the process to obtain an I-20, as well as a visa and passport. 

The cost to obtain a Ph.D. in the U.S. will vary depending on your school, program and whether or not you qualify for funding, like scholarships, grants and fellowships.

Funding Your Ph.D. 

There are several different options for   funding your Ph.D. degree   as an international student in the U.S., the most common of which include: 

• fellowships 
• teaching and research assistantships 
• grants and scholarships

This section will briefly describe the differences between each, which funding sources are available for international students at SMU, and resources to help you find and apply for each type of funding.

Fellowships in the U.S. for International Students

Fellowships are gifts of money, offered by either the university or external benefactors, that are commonly given to students as a merit-based award. Fellowship funding can last anywhere from one year, to the whole duration of a student’s Ph.D. program. Fellowships are frequently used to sponsor a student and   fund proposed research   that will advance their specific area of study. 

At SMU, tuition fellowships are available from the university, and are awarded on a competitive basis for both merit and need. If a program offers departmental funding, students are considered at time of application and do not need to fill out an additional fellowship application. Sometimes additional documentation is required, in which case the department will contact the student directly. 

You can also research additional external fellowships through websites such as   ProFellow   and   GoGrad .

Teaching and Research Assistantships

Teaching and research assistantships are available from the departments. 

Teaching assistantships are positions in which students support department faculty members in their various courses. Some of these positions will involve work helping the professor prepare materials for the class, and in some cases graduate assistants you may be asked to teach the class yourself. 

Research assistantships are similar, in that you will support a department faculty member in their lab and research while receiving compensation, but you will not be involved in classroom interactions.

Similarly to fellowships, they are awarded on a competitive basis for both merit and need, and students are considered for these opportunities at the time of their application. Assistantships cover a student’s tuition and fees and can, in addition, pay stipends for designated work in the departments. 

Grants and Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are both gifts of free money from both private and public institutions that will not need to be paid back after you finish your Ph.D. These types of funds are usually earmarked for students from specific ethnicities, countries, or with particular skills or other qualifications. The best way to take advantage of grants and scholarships is to begin your research early and apply for as many as possible. 

International students are not eligible for U.S. Government grants, but there are plenty of opportunities from private institutions — some even offer fully-funded scholarships or grants for international graduate students. You can find   grants and scholarships specifically for international students   on websites such as   GreatCollegeDeals   and   CollegeScholarships.org .

Private   loans are offered to international students   through a variety of different institutions. Students can borrow up to the total amount of the cost of their education and education related expenses, after financial aid is applied, to be paid back to the institution with interest upon completion of your degree. 

You will need to apply for these loans, which will include providing the lender with some financial information. International students applying for loans will often be   required to have a creditworthy cosigner   on the loan who is a U.S. citizen or a non-citizen permanent resident. 

Websites such as   International Student Loan   and   IEFA   can help you find and compare loans, interest rates, and repayment plans. 

Every international student is required to file a tax return if they were in the US during the previous calendar year. These need to be submitted by April 15th of each year. You must file a tax return (or in some circumstances   Form 8843 ) to comply with a F-1 visa, even if you didn’t earn any money in the U.S.. 

If you received income in the US in the last calendar year, you will need to file both   Form 8843   and most likely   Form 1040NR-EZ . There are several options for completing your tax paperwork:

• File online, by purchasing a tax code for an online program facilitated by the International Student and Scholar Services Office (ISSS)
• Fill out hard copies and mail them directly to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
• Pay a professional to file them for you

Immigration Laws and Obtaining A Visa

International students will need to acquire several documents to legally study in the United States. At SMU, our Office of   International Student and Scholar Services   works with students directly to process their visa paperwork. The office will contact students directly through email, to help get paperwork in order and remind students if anything is still missing.

After being accepted by SMU, a   Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certified school , international students will begin the process of filling out your paperwork to study in the U.S.. Follow this easy step-by-step list will help ensure international students complete each necessary component.

How to Apply For A Student Visa to Study in the United States:

• Your designated school official (DSO) will send you an   I-20 to complete
• Pay Your   I-901 SEVIS Fee   (make sure to keep your receipt — you will need it!)
• Apply for a U.S. Visa   (F-1 student visa status) 
• Arrive at U.S. Port of Entry (schedule arrival within 30 days of official program start date listed on your I-20)
• Once international students arrive in the US, they will be met by a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officer. Be prepared to present the following:
• Acceptance letter from your SEVP-certified school
• Evidence of financial support
• Name and telephone number of your DSO 
• Once international students have been admitted, they will receive a   form I-94 , “Arrival and Departure Record”
• International students   must maintain their status   as a fulltime student, until they have completed their chosen degree program 

After one full year of study, international students are eligible to take an annual vacation. Students who wish to find part time employment must speak with their DSO first to ensure that they meet all the necessary requirements.  

F-1 students should   speak with their DSO   if they are planning to do any of the following:

• Change their major, program, or degree level.
• Change their education level.
• Transfer to a new school or take a leave of absence.
• Take a break from school.
• Travel outside the United States.
• Move to a new address.
• Request a program extension.

SMU provides funding to cover the cost of premiums for the Student Health Insurance plan for all full-time enrolled Ph.D. students who meet the   eligibility requirements . 

Coverage is provided for up to five years, with the goal of improving the quality of life for students and removing a significant financial burden so students can focus on their doctoral studies. 

Students who elect to accept the university’s health insurance plan have access to the Dr. Bob Smith Health Center, located on SMU’s campus. Your insurance covers all services offered, including comprehensive quality medical services, dental services, counseling services, and health promotion. 

Annual health maintenance such as flu shots are free to students, and the Health Center hosts a pharmacy for students to easily access medications and prescriptions.

• There are two major airports in the Dallas area:   Love Field   and   Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport . 
• DART is the transportation system   that gets you around Dallas and 12 surrounding cities. SMU participates in a   DART Higher Education Pass Program . All enrolled students are eligible to receive a FREE annual DART transit pass. 

The   SMU Express and Museum Express   shuttles are free to all students and do not require a DART Transit Pass to ride.

Tell us a little about where you are from and your educational background.

I am from the southern part of Brazil, from a city close to Florianópolis (which is the capital of the State of Santa Catarina). Even the capital is a small town compared to Dallas, the whole metropolitan area of Florianópolis has around 1 million inhabitants, so coming to a big city has been a big change! Regarding my educational background I received my bachelor’s degree in economics from the State University of Santa Catarina. Right after graduating, I enrolled in a master’s program in economics in the Federal University of Pernambuco.

What was your primary motivation for applying to an international graduate school?

There were two main reasons. The first one is that there were more options that would let me achieve a educational background with higher quality levels than what were available and feasible to me back home. And the second was to have the experience of living in a different country and being in contact with different cultures.

What made you choose SMU over other schools?

The deciding factor was being at a place that you felt welcome in. The team that did the recruitment in my PhD program did an amazing job with that. I already was inclined about choosing SMU, but the environment sealed the deal.

Was there anything you found challenging about applying to an international school?

Yes, for sure. The biggest hurdle was the language. I am not a native English speaker, so adapting and breaking the ice in conversations was difficult.

Is there any advice you would give an international student applying to SMU?

Start early and get you application package ready to go when you need it. The whole application process is already stressful enough without the pressure of not meeting the deadlines. Moreover, be in touch with the people that are on the other side of the application process, let your recruiters know about any question or concern that you may have.

Is there anything you have found difficult about attending an international school?

The language barrier was scary initially, but the community does a good job of making you feel safe and included!

What is one thing you would recommend doing in Dallas, to all international students attending SMU for the first time?

Not exactly in the city of Dallas, but close by there is the Fort Worth Stockyards, which gave me a little bit of the feeling of being in an old western movie. It was a great experience getting to know the area and checking out the longhorn bulls!

5 Reasons You Should do Your PhD Abroad

Have you ever considered doing your PhD abroad? There are several major benefits to going abroad to earn your doctorate.

More Opportunities

As you start to narrow down your research interests, you may find that there are only a small number of universities in your home country that have PhD programs in your field or faculty that work in your research area. Applying internationality will give you more options in terms of both programs and potential supervisors. Additionally, if your research requires access to certain museums, sites, libraries, archives, or equipment, studying in another country might facilitate your access.

Better Funding

It may be significantly cheaper to do your PhD abroad. Tuition fees vary widely across the world, especially at the doctorate level. PhD students in Germany and Sweden for example do not have to pay tuition fees. In addition to saving money on tuition, you could actually get paid to do your PhD if you study overseas. In many European countries (including France, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Norway) PhD students are seen as employees rather than students and so they are paid a monthly stipend. This is markedly different to the US or UK where tuition waivers and stipends are not guaranteed and often only available to top students or at top schools. Additionally, you might qualify for certain scholarships from your home country or in your destination country that are specifically for students studying internationally.

Shorter Time to Degree or Better Structure

While the basic elements of a doctoral degree are the same around the world, every country has a slightly different program structure . The best structure for you might not be the one in your home country. 

• Time to degree -Many European PhDs take three years to complete compared to five years or more in North America.
• Teaching -In some countries, PhD candidates are required to gain a certain number of hours of teaching experience, while in others they focus entirely on their research projects.
• Coursework -Most PhD students have to take a course or two during their degree, however in the US and Canada students typically must do two to three years of coursework before starting their dissertation research. While this gives them a more in-depth knowledge of the subject matter, it also increases the length of the doctoral program.
• Lab rotations -In some countries it is common for first year PhD students to rotate through two to three labs in their first year to decide which lab they want to do their dissertation work in. Students who already know what they want to research might prefer to start working on their project and should look for PhD positions that are project specific. Students who don’t know what they would like to research would benefit from a program that has students rotate through multiple labs their first year.

Widen Your Network

One of the perks of doing an international PhD is the chance to broaden your network by making connections in a new county. On a personal level, you will get to meet people and make friends from all over the world. Doing a PhD internationally can also help you if you want to work outside of your home country after earning your degree.

Embrace a New Culture

Studying internationally will allow you to gain a global perspective. You’ll be exposed to new ideas, teaching styles and academic cultures. You might even get the opportunity to learn a new language. While English is the lingua franca of research, it may not be the local language. Learning the local language will not only help you navigate your new country, it could also help you in your future job search. It does not provide any dependents allowance and is insufficient to support family members. It is intended for PhD students to conduct research essential to their dissertations/thesis, so the candidates should submit the expected PhD thesis at least three months after the Fulbright-Nehru grant end date.

The Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation has supported innovative research and scholarship work for over four decades. Since 2016 the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation has been working with the Cambridge Trust to offer scholarships to Indian students at the PhD level in various academic subjects. Till now, over 350 scholars have benefited from these scholarships. The selection process for the scholarship consists of 2 rounds: shortlisting candidates based on the written evidence submitted and personal or zoom interview with a panel of experts.

The scholarship provides financial support to undertake research at an institution that must be utilized within nine months of being awarded. It provides a travel allowance of up to $1000, monthly maintenance expenses of up to $2000, up to $500 for buying materials, and a health allowance of up to $500.

A donation of $210 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation established the Gates Cambridge Scholarship program. Each year Gates Cambridge offers 55 full-cost scholarships to PhD students outside the UK. The candidates are selected based on exceptional intellectual ability, reasons for choosing the course, a commitment to improving other's lives, and leadership potential.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship provides funding for both core and discretionary components. Each year, DAAD supports over 100,000 German and international students and researchers around the globe. The DAAD scholarship provides a monthly stipend of 1,200 Euros as a monthly stipend, travel grant, free accommodation in the university dorms, insurance and health coverage.

An independent selection committee of specialist scientists reviews the applied candidates and selects them based on their qualifications, the quality of the research project, and the applicant's potential. The qualification selection criteria include academic achievements, academic progress, and knowledge of the working language. The quality of research selection criteria includes originality and relevance of the project, feasibility and consistency of the study plan, and incorporation of the project within the overall doctorate. Imperial College London provides 50 President’s PhD Scholarships to attract candidates that show excellent academic performance and promising research potential. The President’s PhD Scholarships provides full tuition fees, a stipend of £22,900 per annum to assist with living costs, a consumables fund of £2,000 per annum for the first 3 years of study, and access to the full range of support at Imperial. The scholarship is available for both full-time and part-time study.

The President’s PhD Scholarships is a highly competitive scheme and has higher than usual eligibility requirements. The Faculties and College Selection Panel assess the candidates on academic excellence (past academic results, relative class position, awards and distinctions) and research potential (candidate’s research, the research plan and its potential contribution).

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs developed the Eiffel Scholarship Program to assist French higher education institutions in attracting the best international students to PhD programs. French higher education institutions submit the applications for the scholarship, and applications sent directly by students or foreign institutions are declared ineligible.

The Eiffel program is awarded for 12 months in France. It does not cover the tuition fees but provides benefits like a monthly stipend of €1,700, international transportation, national transportation, insurance, housing searches, cultural activities, etc.

Course duration

Depending upon the field of study, thesis completion and individual progress, PhD completion may take somewhere between 3 to 10 years. The coursework while pursuing international PhD will comprise of lectures, countless presentations, and extensive research.

Intake season

There are usually two intakes round the year that most foreign universities and colleges offer – one during the month of January which is the Spring intake and the other during the month of September which is the Fall intake. Some universities may also offer an intake in the month of April which is the Summer intake. Choose your intake based on factors like availability of your preferred program, your chosen institution, academic records, entrance test scores, job opportunities etc. You can always ask your IDP counsellor for guidance on the intake that is right for you.

Thirteen UW students receive Fulbright exchange awards for study, research and teaching positions around the world

Thirteen UW students and recent alumni were selected for Fulbright exchange awards. University of Washington

Thirteen UW students and recent alumni were awarded  Fulbright U.S. Student Program  scholarships this year, joining about 2,000 students and recent graduates from around the country to study and teach abroad.

The scholarship program is the largest U.S. international exchange opportunity for students to pursue graduate study, advanced research and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.

Five UW undergraduate students or recent alumni are among this year’s Fulbright Student Program recipients and plan travel to Asia, Europe, South America and the Middle East to take part in research and teaching assistantships. Eight graduate-level students plan to travel to the Middle East, Central America, Europe, and East and South Asia. The UW had three students — two undergraduates and one graduate level — selected as alternates.

This year’s undergraduate awardees are:

• Vecksle Drake: English teaching assistantship in Mongolia
• Anna Feit: Study and research, Brazil
• Lukas Metzner: Study and research, Germany
• Lexi Rohrer: Study and research, Thailand
• Ela Sezgin: English teaching assistantship, Turkey

This year’s graduate-level awardees at the UW are:

• Aaron Barker, Doctoral student, Philosophy: Research grant to Germany
• Rachel Andersen, Doctoral student, Nursing: Research grant to Jordan
• Claudia Herrero Rapagna, Master’s student, International Studies: English teaching assistant grant to Jordan

OURS program sets students up for success in graduate school and beyond

Three Arizona State University students are celebrating academic achievements including acceptance into an exciting graduate program, the earning of a fellowship and the expansion of their research, thanks to the Online Undergraduate Research Scholars (OURS) program offered by The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

OURS is designed to give online students the research experience that is necessary for success in careers and graduate school, offering a variety of experiences across a wide range of disciplines. Also, the program aims to meet students where they’re at, serving online students not just from Arizona, but across the country and abroad.

“At ASU, we are always seeking innovative solutions to provide our online students with experiential opportunities that will help them find success beyond graduation, and the OURS program is one of these examples,” said Ara Austin, senior director of online engagement and strategic initiatives in The College and a clinical associate professor in the School of Molecular Sciences.

Enyce Fairbanks will be joining Johns Hopkins University’s Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) this spring; Joelle Denning will begin her evolutionary biology PhD program at ASU’s School of Life Sciences, with funding from the National Science Foundation, this fall; and, also this fall, Melanie Aldridge will pursue her graduate degree in biomedical sciences at Vanderbilt University.

“We are thrilled to see that students like Enyce, Joelle and Melanie were able to participate in the OURS experiences to gain skills and the preparation needed for competitive graduate programs," Austin said.

Enyce Fairbanks

When she started her collegiate career, Fairbanks attended school in person in her home state of Virginia — until the COVID-19 pandemic. Because she could no longer attend class in person, she got a job at Starbucks and began her journey as an ASU Online student in the School of Life Sciences, majoring in biological sciences with a concentration in genetics, cell and developmental biology.

Fairbanks became involved in cancer microbiome research through the OURS program after taking a class with Austin that led to a research opportunity with the Arizona Cancer Evolution Center (ACE) Scholars program. She says the OURS program challenges the narrative of online learning being “less than” the traditional college experience.

After graduating this spring, Fairbanks will be joining Johns Hopkins University’s PREP, which is funded by the NIH for underrepresented students to get additional years of research experience before applying to biomedical PhD programs. She will be continuing cancer microbiome research, and hopes to be at the forefront of “improving cancer therapeutics and making them more effective for people.”

Joelle Denning

Denning joined the OURS program when it first took off while living in Japan in the spring of 2022. Now, this spring, she is graduating with her degree in biological sciences with a concentration in genetics, cell and developmental biology, and a certificate in computational life sciences. 

After her first online bioinformatics genomic research experience, Denning continued on as a TA. That experience, being a witness to the expansion of the OURS program and the unwavering support from her mentors are what drive her motivation to make scientific research attainable to students regardless of where they are. Her research plan, funded through the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program, integrates online research experiences for students.

“OURS truly opened the door to opportunities, and I hope the course will inspire more online students like me to further their research journey,” she said.

Denning plans to move to Arizona to start her evolutionary biology PhD program at ASU’s School of Life Sciences.

Melanie Aldridge

Aldridge has always been interested in how medicine works. Driven by her online studies as a biochemistry student in ASU’s School of Molecular Sciences and her dedication to help others, Aldridge sought to pursue graduate school and gain the necessary research experience that would prepare her for a successful career.

Through ASU’s OURS program, she completed two internships: one in memory and attention control research, simulating neurological memory impairment studies, and another in cancer biology and evolutionary theory through the ACE Scholars Program. Through her involvement, Aldridge received five units of research credit on her transcripts, presented at five research symposiums, won a poster prize in cancer studies and is actively producing a manuscript detailing vulnerabilities in cancer communication.

Aldridge, who graduated from ASU in spring 2023, recently was accepted into half a dozen different graduate programs and has decided to attend Vanderbilt University in the fall of 2024, pursuing a graduate degree in biomedical sciences with a focus in cancer biology.

“OURS gave me opportunities that I would not have had as an online student, and I don't know what I would've done had I not had this opportunity,” Aldridge said.

Joseph Casale will analyze aerial hyperspectral imagery to map the species of trees in Malaysia.

Peyton D’Anthony will teach English in Kosovo.

Emma Herz Thakur will create connections between artisans and museums in France.

Mikkael Lamoca will research age-related neurodegeneration in Singapore.

Izzy Moyer will work with The State Archives in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Sabal received a Fulbright scholarship to pursue her graduate education at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Taiwan. She is one of a record six Fulbright U.S. Student awardees this year from RIT.

Prior to her Fulbright award, Sabal received a  Boren Award Scholarship  to  complete a study abroad experience at NCKU . In 2021, Sabal studied at NCKU virtually as a U.S. Department of State  Critical Language Scholar . She eagerly anticipates reuniting with the friends she made through these previous experiences when she returns to complete her master’s degree in creative industries design.

“Creative industries design is a multidisciplinary study that incorporates marketing, the innovation processes, business, sustainability, and artistic and creative elements,” said Sabal. “I want to go into a global business field, and I’m most interested in people-based and creativity-driven work.”

Sabal shares that studying abroad in Taiwan helped her become more confident in her own cultural identity. Sabal lived in Chengdu, China, until she was adopted and moved to Stafford, Va. She explains that, at times, it was difficult to truly understand how she fit into the world.

“I’ve always had a passion for art and creativity since I was a kid. I lived in China for seven years, so I started developing my artwork there. My art has really helped me navigate my identity and my style, and a lot of my art is influenced by Asian culture,” said Sabal. “Even though I’m not Taiwanese, going to Taiwan really helped me bridge that identity and cultural gap.”

Sabal shared that her Fulbright award was made possible, in part, due to years of forming connections abroad and support from her faculty mentors throughout her time at RIT, including Associate Professor  Zhong Chen  in the  College of Liberal Arts’   Department of Modern Languages and Cultures .

Once she graduates from NCKU, Sabal plans to return to the United States with the goal of pursuing a career in digital and social media marketing.

Isabel Laínez ’17 ( design and imaging technology ) is a designer and illustrator who works with clients to develop a variety of projects, creating visual and brand identities such as logos and motion graphics. As she developed her interest in graphic design, Laínez enrolled in the design and imaging technology program at RIT/NTID, where she gained computer-based graphics skills for a career in the visual communications field.

Alexander Van Hook has been named to the board of the Rochester Institute of Technology/National Technical Institute for the Deaf’s Alumni Association. A staff attorney at the National Association of the Deaf, and admitted to the District of Columbia Bar, he self-identifies as a person with cross-disabilities (deaf wheelchair user).

The National Science Foundation ( NSF ) has announced the 2024 Graduate Research Fellowship Program ( GRFP ) which included 20 awardees and 12 honorable mentions from Purdue University.  Of the pool of innovators, the Purdue University College of Science students stood out with ten awardee offers and two honorable mentions:

The purpose of the NSF GRFP is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. A goal of the program is to broaden participation of the full spectrum of diverse talents in STEM. The five-year fellowship provides three years of financial support inclusive of an annual stipend of $37,000.

Katie Wilson :   

“I am about to graduate from Purdue with a bachelor’s degree in applied math and minors in computer science and EAPS at Purdue. I fell in love with atmospheric science at Purdue, specifically clouds, and am excited to continue my education on the topic in grad school. At Purdue, I have been deeply involved in the Women in Science Program as a mentee, mentor, and team leader, from which I have made so many fun memories and impactful relationships. Being awarded the GRFP changed my future and opened exciting opportunities for me. Because of it, I am now able to pursue research in a field that I am passionate about without having to stress much over funding, something that greatly influenced my graduate school decision. I am very grateful for the opportunity to prove myself and make discoveries with my research as a woman in science. My plans for the GRFP are to go to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and get my master’s through their Atmospheric and Oceanic Science Research Program. I plan to do research on cloud microphysics/aerosols to learn more about factors that affect cloud properties and how this impacts climate change using numerical models and remote sensing data.”  

Haleigh Brown :   

“I am a computational astrobiologist working within the PHAB lab under Associate Professor Stephanie Olson at Purdue’s Earth Atmosphere and Planetary Sciences department. Broadly my work involves using numerical climate models and machine learning to better understand exoplanet habitability. I have wonderful peers and mentors helping me achieve my goals and I am thrilled to have the support of the NSF GRFP as well. I am eager to take advantage of the new tools accessible to me now due to the NSF and I am confident this will aid in my ability to contribute great work within my field.”  

Mikail Habib Khan:   

“I'm a senior in Purdue Computer Science, working on Programming Languages research with some Physics Education work on the side. I want to eliminate incidental complexity from software engineering to make programming more productive and accessible. For fun I like skating, reading sci-fi/fantasy, and playing video games. I worked with Associate Professor Tiark Rompf on CS research and Professor Sanjay Rebello for physics. Assistant Professor Ben Delaware has also given me a ton of advice and told me to apply for the GRFP in the first place. To me, the GRFP means that I'll have more freedom to pursue my interests in grad school. I won't have to worry about finding a funded project, and I might be able to leverage it to more easily find visiting scholar positions. I'm starting a PhD at CMU, where there are a ton of advisors I'd love to work with. I might work on WebAssembly, Program Synthesis, or Verification.”  

Abigail Soliven  

“I am a senior earning my degree in chemistry on the ACS track and a minor in english. When not in the lab, I spend my time involved on campus or reading, soaking up sunshine, and making playlists. The NSF GRFP is a vote of confidence in my abilities as a researcher and the impact I can make in my field as a graduate student and beyond. Through the GRFP, I will be able to focus entirely on my work and advancing chemical knowledge by knowing I have the financial support and resources to be creative and inventive. I am pursuing a PhD in organic chemistry at UC Berkeley post-graduation from Purdue. Boiler up and go bears!”  

Stephanie DeLancey  

“I am graduating from Purdue with a BS  degree in chemistry (ACS) and a minor in psychology. I have worked in the Ren lab for three and a half years, studying iron-based organometallic complexes with applications in the catalysis and materials fields. I look forward to starting my PhD at UNC Chapel Hill in the fall where I will continue to pursue research themes rooted in sustainable chemistry. Being awarded an NSF GRFP was an incredible honor that greatly validated my potential as a researcher. I am so grateful to have been recognized by a prestigious institution and provided the financial support to pursue my research goals with greater freedom and focus in grad school. However, receiving this honor has also made me all the more thankful for my mentorship in the Ren group that shaped me into the scientist I am today.  Starting this summer, I will begin working towards my PhD in inorganic chemistry at UNC Chapel Hill. I hope to conduct impactful research with relevance to energy storage and conversion, potentially with the CHASE Solar Hub at UNC. I cannot wait to start my next chapter knowing the NSF GRFP will allow me to more freely explore these interests.”  

Grace Crim  

“I am majoring in biochemistry (Department of Chemistry) and electrical engineering. During my time at Purdue, I have been involved in research, WISP, WIE, and SWE, as well as first-generation student honors and ambassador programs. I am passionate about interdisciplinary research and involving multiple STEM communities to solve big research problems. The GRFP is an accomplishment that everyone in research recognizes. I learned about the prestige of the NSF GRFP in sophomore year, when the graduate student I was doing research under won the award herself. I was lucky to have incredible research advisors that helped me through learning about the fellowship application process and graduate school as a whole. Coming from financial need, having the financial freedom to pursue research without worrying about funding is a relief. My plans are to pursue a PhD in electrical and computer engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. My goal is to design micro-scale sensors with biological processes and chemical detection in mind, specifically for wildlife monitoring and astrobiology. Lab on a chip technology is new and promising. I am hoping to diversify applications of this tech ethically and responsibly to help fields other than ECE. My PhD will consist of a lot of time in the semiconductor cleanroom and collaborating with researchers from other universities and national labs in many different fields. Purdue has prepared me well for this type of research and I can't wait to get started!”  

Daniel Hristov  

“I am originally from Knoxville, TN with backgrounds from Bulgaria and Puerto Rico. I have been completing research with Professor Julia Laskin’s group the past four years working with electrochemistry and mass spectrometry-based techniques to better understand the fundamentals of ions and charged interfaces. I really enjoyed working with my graduate mentor, Hugo and having meaningful discussions about the molecular dynamics of our systems. I am truly grateful to the valuable mentoring provided by Dr. Hugo Samayoa and Professor Julia Laskin, and the scientists I interned for at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Dr. Grant Johnson and Dr. Venky Prabhakaran, that allowed me to broaden horizons in my projects and think critically about results. This award has meant a great amount not only to myself as a scientist, but every scientist who has mentored and supported me throughout my four years. I will start my PhD in physical chemistry in the fall at the University of California Berkeley.”  

Addison Curtis:  

“I am a queer, disabled geologist currently working towards my master’s in earth science. My research in the Thermochronology @ Purdue Lab under Assistant Professor Marissa Tremblay focuses on using radioactive isotopes in specific minerals to determine the ages and thermal histories of rocks in the North Cascades, WA to better understand regional tectonic changes about 50 million years ago! Outside of my research, I am extremely passionate about geoscience education and increasing representation for both disabled and Queer individuals in geology and academia as a whole. I am extremely grateful to have received the NSF GRFP to support me through the rest of my graduate school career. I am honored to join a cohort of other Fellows and continue to strive for excellence in both science and outreach. Graduate school is difficult for anyone but especially for someone who holds my identities, so having this support helps to relieve some of that pressure. It is also extremely validating and encouraging to receive such an award, showing that despite my additional challenges, I am still an intelligent, capable scientist with potential to significantly impact my field. Since I am currently a master’s student, I plan on using the GRFP as support in my future PhD program. While I don’t know where I will be going next, this award allows me to be able to pursue the specific research that I am interested in at another institution without having to worry about the logistics of future funding.”   

Meenakshi McNamara  

“I am graduating with a math and physics double major, and I plan to become a professor someday. I am passionate about conducting research in these fields, as well as helping build community as I have been doing through club leadership and mentoring programs. In my free time, I love to read, write, and draw. You may also find me rock climbing or playing board games with friends. I am honored to have been awarded the NSF GRFP. Winning this fellowship means that the committee felt that I have the potential to become a strong graduate student and researcher, and this is very meaningful because my goal is to have a research career. Further, communicating pure math research well can be difficult, and I certainly learned important skills during the application process. Thus, it was amazing to see that these efforts paid off and I have more confidence in my ability to communicate about my research and apply for similar things in the future.”

7 Things to Do After College Besides Work

After graduation from college, you may be full speed ahead in terms of finding a job and launching your career. However, many recent grads may have other ideas and not head directly into the work world.

Several alternatives are possible — including internships, volunteering, grad school, or spending time abroad. Of course, the options available will differ depending on each person’s situation and interests. If you’re considering a path other than diving into an entry-level job, read on. Here are seven things to do after college besides work.

1. Pursue Internships

One popular alternative to working right after college is finding an internship. Generally, internships are temporary work opportunities, which are sometimes, but not always, paid.  Unpaid internships  can be valuable nonetheless.

Internships for recent grads  can offer a chance to build up hands-on experience in a field or industry they believe they’re interested in working in full time. For some people, it could help determine whether the reality of working in a given sector meets their expectations.

Whatever grads learn during an internship, having on-the-job experience (even for those who opt to pursue a different career path) could make a job seeker stand out afterwards. Internships can help beef up a resume, especially for recent grads who don’t have much formal job experience.

A potential perk of internships is the chance to further grow your professional network, building relationships with more experienced workers in a particular department or job. Some interns may even be able to turn their short-term internship roles into a full-time position at the same company.

Starting out in an internship can be a great way for graduates to enter the workforce, road-testing a specific job role or company. You may find the opportunity is a great fit or decide it’s actually not right for you.

2. Serve with AmeriCorps

Some graduates want to spend their time after college contributing to the greater good of American society. One possible option here is the Americorps program, which is supported by the US Federal Government.

So, what exactly is Americorps? Americorps is a national service program dedicated to improving lives and fostering civic engagement. There are three main programs that graduates can join in AmeriCorps:

• AmeriCorps NCCC
• AmeriCorps State and National
• AmeriCorps Vista.

There’s a wide variety of options in AmeriCorps, when it comes to how you can serve. Graduates can dive into emergency management, help fight poverty, or work in a classroom.

However graduates decide to serve through AmeriCorps, it may provide them with a rewarding professional experience and insights into a potential career.

Practically, Americorps members may also qualify for benefits such as  student loan deferment , a living allowance, education awards (upon finishing their service), and skills training.

It may sound a bit dramatic, but AmeriCorps’ slogan is “Be the greater good.” Giving back to society could be a powerful way to spend some time after graduating. You can support organizations in need, while also establishing new professional connections.

3. Attend Grad School

Some jobs require just a bachelor’s degree, while others require a master’s degree. Think, for instance, of being a lawyer or medical doctor. Or you might want a certain postgrad degree, like  earning an MBA , to boost your career and earning trajectory.

The number of jobs that expect graduate degrees is increasing in the US. Graduates might want to research their desired career fields and see if it’s common for people in these roles to need a master’s or terminal (PhD) degree.

Some students may wish to take a break in between undergrad and grad school, while others find it easier to go straight through. This choice will vary from student to student, depending on the energy they have to continue school as well as their ability to  afford graduate school .

Graduate school will be a commitment of time, energy, and money. So, it’s wise to feel confident that a graduate degree is necessary for the line of work you’d like to pursue before forging ahead.

4. Volunteer for a Cause

Volunteering could be a great way for graduates to gain some extra skills before applying for a full-time job. Here’s why:

• Doing volunteer work may help graduates polish some essential soft skills, like interpersonal communication, interacting with clients or service recipients, and time management.
• This, in turn, can help you tweak your resume and make yourself more marketable.
• Volunteering can help you network and forge new connections outside of college. The people-to-people connections made while volunteering could lead to mentorship and job offers.
• New grads may want to volunteer at an institution or organization that syncs with their values or, perhaps, pursue opportunities in sectors of the economy where they’d like to work later on (i.e., at a hospital).
• Volunteering just feels good. After all of the stress that accompanies finishing up college, volunteering afterward could be the perfect way to recharge.

5. Serve Abroad

Similar to the last option, volunteering abroad can be attractive to some graduates. It may help grads gain similar skills they’d learn volunteering here at home. It can also give them the opportunity to learn how to interact with people from different cultures, learn a new language, and see new perspectives on solving problems.

Though it can be beneficial to the volunteers, volunteering abroad isn’t always as ethical as it seems. And, not all volunteering opportunities always benefit the local community.

It could take research to find organizations that are doing ethically responsible work abroad. One key thing to look for is organizations that put the locals first and have them directly involved in the work.

6. Take a Gap Year

A gap year is a semester or a year of experiential learning. While it’s often taken after high school, it can be a path after college as well. (You may have to  budget for a gap year , though, especially if you won’t be earning much income.)

Not only might a gap year help grads build insights into what they’d like to do with their later careers, it may also help them home in on a greater purpose in life or build connections that could lead to future job opportunities.

Graduates might want to spend a gap year doing a variety of activities including:

• Trying out seasonal jobs
• Volunteering or caring for family members or others in need
• Teaching or tutoring

A gap year can be whatever the graduate thinks will be most beneficial for them. There are a variety of ways to  finance a gap year  that can be worth researching.

7. Travel Before Working

Going on a trip after graduation is a popular choice for graduates who can afford to travel after college. Traveling can be expensive, so graduates may want to budget in advance (if they want to have this experience post-graduation.

On top of just being really fun, travel can have beneficial impacts for an individual’s stress levels and mental health. Traveling after graduation is a convenient time to start ticking locations off that bucket list, because graduates won’t be held back by a limited vacation time. Going abroad before working can give students more time and flexibility to travel as much as they’d like (and can  afford to travel ).

There are ways to economize, such as using a multi-country rail pass, etc. It doesn’t have to be all luxury all the time. Budget travel is possible especially when making conscious decisions, like  staying in affordable hotels  and using public transportation.

If graduates are determined to travel before working, they can accomplish this by saving money and budgeting well.

Navigating Postgrad Financial Decisions

Whether a recent grad opts to start their careers off right away or to pursue one of the above-mentioned paths post-college other than work, student loans may be part of the picture.

After graduating (or if you’ve dropped below half-time enrollment or left school), the reality of paying back student loans sets in. The exact moment that grads will have to begin paying off their student loans will vary by the type of loan.

For federal loans, there are a couple of different times that repayment begins. Students who took out a  Direct Subsidized , Direct Unsubsidized, or Federal Family Education Loan, will all have a six-month grace period before they’re required to make payments. Students who took out a Perkins loan will have a nine-month grace period.

When it comes to the PLUS loan, it depends on the type of student that’s taken the loan out. Undergraduates will be required to start repayment as soon as the loan is paid out. Graduate and professional students with PLUS loans will be on automatic deferment while they’re in school and up to six months after graduating.

Some graduates opt to  refinance their student loans . What does that mean? Refinancing student loans is when a lender pays off the existing loan with another loan that has a new interest rate. Refinancing can potentially lower monthly loan repayments or reduce the amount spent on interest over the life of the loan.

However, there are a couple of important notes about this process:

• Both US federal and private student loans can be refinanced, but when federal student loans are refinanced by a private lender, the borrower forfeits federal benefits — including loan forgiveness, deferment and forbearance, and income-driven repayment options.
• For those who refinance for an extended term may pay more interest over the life of the loan.

For these reasons, each person with student loans should carefully consider their situation and options to decide the best way to manage their debt.
