‘Phone Bhoot’ movie review: Katrina Kaif’s horror-comedy is a spirited show all the way

There are comic punches that siddhant chaturvedi and ishaan khatter connect really well, but there are also plenty of blank shots that are simply fired for effect or to complete the rhyme.

Horror comedy is the new flavour in Bollywood and  Phone Bhoot  is the latest  desi  version of  Ghostbusters  after the arresting  Bhoot Police . Mounted for teenagers in all age groups, the quirky tale pans out like a visual comic strip and opens up delicious possibilities for subversive and politically-incorrect ideas in the pop-culture space.

Gullu (Ishaan Khatter) and Major (Siddhant Chaturvedi) are so crazy about horror stories that they cross over to the other side like a walk in the park. Their pad is like a museum of horror films. One night, a wandering soul called Ragini (Katrina Kaif) knocks them out of their senses when she enters their life and offers them a business idea of liberating spirits caught in the mortal world. The boys seem like passengers who missed the  Fukrey  bus and are hard on money, but they have their morals intact. They don’t want any undue profit, but Ragini charms them into the plot... for she has her own axe to grind with an evil occultist Atmaram (Jackie Shroff). The bombastic Atmaram also promises salvation but he ekes out blood money.

The plot prepares us for a roller coaster-ride on the politics of salvation, but the kind of detailing the production designers show in creating the spooky universe around Gullu, Major, and Ragini is somewhat missing in the uneven writing of Ravi Shankaran and Jasvinder Bath.

There are comic punches that connect really well, but there are also plenty of blank shots that are simply fired for effect or to complete the rhyme. One could see tantalising possibilities but the humour doesn’t dig deep enough, perhaps to keep the target audience interested. From Raka to Ragini, the references to iconic characters of horror films is interesting, but a comedy has to be more than just wordplay. After a point, the narrative is reduced to a series of skits as the writers lose grip on the arc of the story. The good thing is director Gurmmeet Singh is self-aware of the silliness on display and the film doesn’t try to take itself too seriously, without losing sight of the intrinsic logic.

The film also explores diversity in the ghost world, as a Tamil soul is exorcised by a photo of Rajinikanth, and the Punjabi one is controlled by a peppy bhangra number! Language remains a derisive issue after death as well, as a Bengali witch cannot pronounce  moksha.  There is an Aslam   as well holding up the good man’s lantern for those who could lose way to the other side.

The casting is fresh and the young Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ishaan Khatter nail the wicked mood as the charming and cocky Punjabi and Tamil ghostbusters who provide salvation to the jinxed souls for a price. Their comic timing salvages the underwritten parts. As an idea, Katrina Kaif as a bewitching spirit makes sense and she loosens up to meet the demands of the genre. Jackie Shroff also surrenders to the absurdist mood, as he plays the iconic  Hero  tune in the garb of a villain.

Not everybody’s cup of tea, Phone Boot is like the spirited blend of coffee and lassi that helps Gullu and Major take on the bluff of Atmaram.

Phone Bhoot Review: Katrina Kaif, Ishaan Khatter And Siddhant Chaturvedi's Film Is Wacky, Wild And Weird

Phone bhoot review: the film isn't an earth-shattering, game-changing deal for the genre but it has the feel of a full-on mad hatters' party where everything goes..

It is wacky, wild and weird in a way that takes a lot of doing to get used to. From its opening sequence on, Phone Bhoot is a maelstrom of sorts. Whether you can relate to and enjoy the eccentric horror comedy of Phone Bhoot will hinge solely on whether you have a taste for the bizarre. If you do, the Excel Entertainment-produced film serves up a full complement of inducements. It stops at absolutely nothing in its pursuit of all that is odd and awkward in the occult.

Phone Bhoot , directed by Gurmmeet Singh (whose credits include Mirzapur and a few episodes of Inside Edge , besides films such as What the Fish and Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene ) takes a calculated shot at Bhool Bhulaiya -like whimsy. The results are uneven but not wholly pointless.

The makers of the film believe that Phone Bhoot represents an idea that can be milked beyond the limit of a single movie. A spectral sutradhar who presents a voiceover narrative in the beginning, middle and end of the film points to a sequel being in the realms of possibility. Are we excited at this point? One isn't entirely sure.

The film's flights of fancy do not land on the right tarmac all the time, but it succeeds in assembling a bunch of gags that, considered together, delivers some mirth, some madness, and a whole lot of manic moments driven by a cast that is in perfect sync with the madcap spirit of the film.

A wandering soul, Ragini (Katrina Kaif), as seductive as hell, surfaces out of the blue and sells a business idea to two bumbling self-styled bhoot -busters, Sherdil Shergill 'Major' (Siddhant Chaturvedi) and Galileo Parthasarathy 'Gullu' (Ishaan Khattar). The two lads, one from Punjab, the other from Tamil Nadu, have grown up obsessed with ghosts and ghouls and have inevitably found each other.

The two are at odds with real people, especially Major's papa and Gullu's appa. The former wants his son to join the army, the latter hopes his son will become a scientist one day. However, in the single scene that the two dads (Manu Rishi Chadda and Kedar Shankar) appear, they make no bones about the fact that they have all but given up on the boys.

Turns out that the itinerant soul who has made her way into their life has a plan much larger than what the drifter duo can comprehend to begin with. When they figure out what they are being led into, they baulk at first and then opt to continue to play along no matter what the cost is. They have nothing to lose except their self-loathing and the disheartening taunts of the world.

They find themselves willy-nilly on a collision course with an evil 'soul-catcher' Atmaram (Jackie Shroff), whose power springs from a staff that is both a weapon and a trap for the dead who seek salvation. His fortunes suffer a sharp dip as the two bumbling boys unknowingly offer him stiff competition in the business of liberating souls that are wandering in the world of mortals.

One such soul is Chikni Chudail, played by Sheeba Chaddha, who dons a guise that is a far cry from the screen persona that she usually slips into with elan in slice-of-life family dramas. Farce that fast turns into unbridled camp isn't her forte. Yet, when she has lines to deliver, not only does she not flub them, she actually owns them with abandon and adds to the film's quickly rising strangeness quotient.

Parts of Phone Bhoot dial the right numbers, others simply do not connect. Notwithstanding the hit-and-miss affair that it ends up being, the film careens along unabashedly up a path of delirious absurdity as the honest ghostbusters come up against pernicious forces that are out to tame them and put them out of business.

Phone Bhoot incorporates many a nod to Hindi popular cinema of the 1980s and later, the most notable being one that alludes to the start of Jackie Shroff's career. The voluble character that the Bollywood veteran plays turns to his young adversaries and mocks them: " Asli hero idhar khada hai , since 1983." He proceeds to play a tune from the actor's debut film, Subhash Ghai's Hero , on a flute.

Nothing is more instantly reminiscent of Bollywood's past as the villain's den in which the climax plays out, no holds barred. Shroff delights in the excesses that he is allowed to freely indulge in. His co-actors are in lockstep with him as Atmaram tries to stop the lassi-and-black-coffee combination of Major and Gullu from finding a way to turn the tables on him.

Ravishing Ragini isn't the only phantom in Major and Gullu's side of the battlelines. They have their very own guardian ghost, Raka (Surendra Thakur), who occupies a central place in their home dominated by posters of movies titled Cheekhti Deewar and Bandh Darwaza . Just the setting that a bhatakti aatma would need no invitation to float into.

Katrina Kaif literally floats in and out of the film until her back-story, recounted blow-by-blow by Ragini herself in the second half, turns her into the central figure, a dead woman with a real mission. Siddhant Chaturvedi, essaying the brash and quick-on-the-draw Major, fits the bill. But the actor who walks away with the film, and quite effortlessly at that, is Ishaan Khattar. As the nerdy Gullu, he brings both charm and spunk to bear upon his performance.

Phone Booth isn't an earth-shattering, game-changing deal for the genre but it has the feel of a full-on mad hatters' party where everything goes. It isn't the least bit apologetic about it. That is the film's principal strength. Pulling it off is anything but easy, as the many missteps in the film's zany arc show, but the caper does not run itself ragged. That, by all reckoning, should be counted as a success.

Recommended but with a minor health warning: Phone Bhoot isn't for all palates.

'Phone Bhoot' review: A horror comedy that is neither funny nor scary

Makers seem to want the audience to snooze for three hours straight

Phone Bhoot   is a terrifyingly desperate attempt at comedy that fails miserably because instead of tickling the audience's funny bones, the makers seem to want them to snooze for three hours straight. This is that kind of film which forces one to wonder if the makers had taken a look at their final product at least once before releasing it. 

In the cinema hall at a prime-time show, everyone in the audience remained silent throughout the film. Not a single line got as much as a chuckle. This is what happens when one tries to be funny without context. This excruciatingly unfunny, balderdash of a film is the story of two horror fans-turned-ghostbusters (Siddhant Chaturvedi as Major and Ishaan Khatter as Golu). Their room is filled with all things occult—crazy lights, skeleton posters, bhooth masks, and scary red-eyed figures on coffee mugs—and they are desperate to monetize their love for 'bhooth pakdaai,' because, well, they can see ghosts and even speak to them! These ghostbusters devise a business plan: Make money by helping people ward off evil spirits from their lives and help the spirits attain salvation by fulfilling their dying wishes. 

In comes Ragini (Katrina Kaif), the 'ghost-on-a-mission' in bangs and leather boots, who dishes out cheesy lines and cheesier performance that only pulls the already flat film to even lower levels. The dialogues are so bland that it feels as if a school student must have penned them down. 

There’s Jackie Shroff as Atmaram, a monster who lures dead humans into crime on the pretext of helping them attain ‘moksha.’ Adding some drama is Sheeba Chadha as a wild-eyed, ‘ulte-pair-wali chudail’, who speaks Bengali accented Hindi and adds a punch with her performance in each frame.  Phone Bhooth , has a Punjabi Major and Tamilian Golu, alongside a Bengali-speaking Chudail and a Tapori Shroff, and a line-up of bhoots who appear more silly and funny than scary. 

This film, along with a number of others released in recent times, must drive the entire Hindi film industry into introspection and may be even get them to go on a break, to make way for more creatively talented writers and filmmakers.

Phone Bhoot Review: A Terrifyingly Bad Horror Comedy

At some point during Phone Bhoot , my phone mysteriously shut down on its own. Perhaps it got so ashamed of the notes I was typing that it simply gave up. Who can blame the machine for exhibiting artificial intelligence? (At least someone is). Random scribbles on my toes might have made more sense. That’s the kind of vacant nonsense Phone Bhoot is, under the guise of that notorious steak-on-dessert genre: The self-referential horror comedy. The 137-minute-long glorified internet skit reminds me of the sort of inane annual performance that a PJ-cracking uncle puts on only to amuse his family and bask in their attention. They laugh not because he’s funny but because he’s hopelessly unfunny – and also because everyone helped with the production. The cast and crew screenings must have been an in-joke-riddled blast, but show it to a sane stranger and they’ll think you’re messing with them.

It feels surreal to write about this in 2022 (or ever), but here goes. Two broke horror fanatics named Galileo ( Ishaan Khatter ) and Major ( Siddhant Chaturvedi ) – who live in a spooky apartment that might prompt a four-year-old Halloween nut to fire their interior designer – start an exorcism business with a friendly ghost named Ragini ( Katrina Kaif ). They not only free the possessed humans of wandering spirits (“bhatakti aatma”), but also reform the spirits by giving them moksha (salvation). Their start-up success eats into the profits of a dark entity called Atmaram (Jackie Shroff), who runs an underworld lair that maintains the badness of demons and ghosts. A clash is imminent, and Ragini becomes a key character in this aggressively juvenile comedy that expects us to crack up at deliberately cringey quips like “bhootni itni sexy nahi hote (female ghosts are never sexy)” and “dude, we don’t need your doodh (milk)”. If you’re wondering what that sound is, that’s me sighing from my perfectly normal apartment in Mumbai.

Phone Bhoot descends from a long line of dated Bollywood parodies that somehow looks worse than the culture it spoofs. A freelancing Bengali witch (oh, Sheeba Chaddha ) fears the two humans who keep trying to straighten her twisty feet. When she flees, another ghost points out that she’s almost reached Lahore – cue Gadar soundtrack. I’m making absolutely none of this up. Katrina Kaif’s Ragini recreates her Slice ad to seduce Galileo into helping her with a mission. Later on, both of them recreate the steamy Akshay Kumar-Rekha shower scene from Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi to make Major (whom she calls “Major disappointment” with the confidence of someone who has a Netflix stand-up special) jealous. There are many more examples, but I’ve run out of patience.

In their first ghost-busting case, the team encounters a “Madrasi aatma” in a little girl’s body, whom they actually subdue by flaunting a Superstar Rajinikanth photo on their phone. Needless to say, better gags are cracked on my college Whatsapp groups. Another time, the K3G title track plays (only for the 763rd time in Hindi cinema) during a bromantic slow-motion scene between the North Indian Major and the South Indian Galileo. Another time, a Punjabi ghoul with plaited hair (or “choti” – leading to puns ranging from “choti si asha” to a DDLJ punchline I’d rather not corrupt) can’t help but break into a frenzied dance when her potential victims belt out a Punjabi pop song. The writers room must have been a hoot; I can’t say my cinema hall was half as raucous. Then there are the film-making gags that exist so that we don’t notice the mediocrity of the film itself. A character cheekily saying “madad (help) montage” before the film breaks into that musical montage doesn’t make it any less of a cliche. Characters preparing for a “flashback sequence” by sitting in front of a projector with popcorn might have been witty in the pre-Youtube Scary Movie era.

Such movies virtually demand that you have poor taste in life so that you aren’t burdened by ‘intellectualism’ – or the basic ability to think – when you watch them. Nonsense can be entertaining, too, if the writing finds a way to integrate the lazy homages into the playful plot (read: Shaitan Haveli ). But Phone Bhoot manages precisely none of that. If nothing, I’ve given up on deep breaths during stressful screenings and moved on to laughter therapy – a la Dr. Asthana from Munna Bhai M.B.B.S . So if you hear high-pitched giggles the next time you’re watching a distinctly stupid comedy, don’t panic. You’re not the problem. Remember that these are sounds of pain and self-improvement. Come say hello, and we can laugh – at ourselves – together.

PHONE BHOOT is the story of two ghostbusters. Sherdil Shergill aka Major (Siddhant Chaturvedi) and Galileo Parthasarthy aka Guru (Ishaan Khatter; credited in the film simply as Ishaan) are best friends who have a crazy interest in ghosts and spirits ever since they were kids. They want to make money ...  out of their love for ghosts. Sadly, all their business ideas flop. Nevertheless, they continue trying and they host a 'Moksha Party'. It emerges a success as several party goers mark their presence. Unbeknownst to Major and Guru, they are all ghosts. One such ghost is Ragini (Katrina Kaif). She informs them that they are gifted with the ability to see dead people. Hence, she gives them a business idea that they should start a phone line for those who want to get rid of ghosts. Major and Guru refuse at first. But their fathers arrive at their doorstep and ask them to pay Rs. 5 crores, which is the amount spent on their sons till date. They are given a time period of three months. With no other option, Major and Guru accept the idea although they also wonder why Ragini wants to help them. At first, their initiative gets massively trolled. Later, once they start solving cases, their business idea becomes a success. It also gets them in the bad books of the evil Atmaram (Jackie Shroff), who traps spirits trying to achieve 'moksha' (salvation).

Phone Bhoot Review: Boasting of brilliant performances from the whole cast, this horror comedy is worth rewatching several times

Bollywood’s tryst with horror-comedy films has not been very successful. Barring a few films, such as Golmaal Again (2017), Stree (2018), Roohi (2021), and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022) not many films in the said genre have tasted success at the ticket window over the last few years. However, looking at the slate of such films in 2022 and 2023, we hope that at least a few of them will manage to strike a chord with the audience and popularise the genre in India. Phone Bhoot from the house of Excel Entertainment is the most awaited horror comedy of 2022 after Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. Helmed by Gurmeet Singh, the film stars Katrina Kaif, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Ishaan Khatter in lead roles. Let’s find out if it deserves your watch or not over the weekend.

STORY: The film revolves around two incompetent ghostbusters Major ( Siddhant Chaturvedi ) and Gullu ( Ishaan Khatter ) who join forces with a supernatural entity Ragini ( Katrina Kaif ) in order to get their new business started. However, their life takes an unexpected turn when they come to know about the real intention of Ragini, which brings them face to face with an evil tantrik. What follows is an exhilaratingly hilarious ride as they take you through the bylanes of the spirit world.

HIGHS: Phone Bhoot is a well-made horror-comedy film filled with dollops of fun and madness. A complete family entertainer that features Katrina Kaif in a completely new avatar. The actress shines throughout as a ghost and looks charming in every frame. It is so refreshing to see her in a character that she has never attempted before. Ishaan Khatter and Siddhant Chaturvedi are also thoroughly entertaining as two wannabe ghostbusters. They bring in much-needed humour with their antics. Their camaraderie is terrific, something that makes the whole film even more entertaining to watch on the big screen. Jackie Shroff and Sheeba Chaddha also play important characters in the film and both actors do full justice to their roles.

The script of Phone Bhoot is well-written with some brilliantly fleshed-out characters and plenty of punchlines that will leave you in splits every now and then. Having said that, there are a bunch of scenes that look very over-the-top. The cinematography of the film is excellent and so is the background score. The VFX of the film is quite impressive.

LOWS: As mentioned above, there are a couple of over-the-top scenes in the film which could have been toned down. The music of the film is average with no memorable song on the soundtrack.

FINAL VERDICT: Phone Bhoot tries its best to scare you and make you laugh at the same time and, thankfully, it succeeds in doing both. Strong writing and crisp editing along with, of course, excellent performances from the whole cast, make it a perfect watch for the weekend. Go with your friends and family and you will enjoy it even more. I am going with 4 stars.

The trailer of Phone Booth, starring Katrina Kaif, Ishaan Khatter and Siddhant Chaturvedi, is out. The actors have been keeping fans guessing about the seemingly whacky horror-comedy with new posters and teasers.

The trailer sees Katrina Kaif as a ghost and has a mission for Ishaan Khatter and Siddhant Chaturvedi who seem to be the desi version of Ghostbusters, and she wants them to take down an eerie Jackie Shroff or ‘Aatma Ram’ as he’s called. The film ticks off everything that one would expect from a Bollywood horror comedy — slapstick comedy, item songs, a female ghost with feet facing the other side and some questionable moments of seriousness thrown in. There is also a dig at poor Hindi, ironically delivered by Katrina herself. As a ghost, played by Sheeba Chaddha, is unable to say ‘moksh’, Katrina deadpans, “Tumhari Hindi weak hai?” The trailer is peppered with references from older Bollywood films, including Koi Mil Gayaa and Siddhant’s 2019 film, Gully Boy. Considering Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’s success, this might just be another victory in this genre.

Earlier, Katrina had shared a video, where she plays with a toy car that sees Siddhant and Ishaan inside it. The clip began with the two getting excited inside the car, and as they start looking around, she picks up the car. They had also shared quirky posters of the trio.

Siddhant, Katrina and Ishaan had also featured on Koffee with Karan Season 7 to promote their film, and showed their close friendship with each other. Siddhant told News 18 recently about the fun he had working with Katrina, “I would say, it’s amazing working with her. She might look innocent but she is a prankster. She used to prank us a lot as we are juniors also. It was fun working with her, she was very loving. Got to learn a lot from her. I think she is one of the most hardworking actresses I have worked with.”

Katrina was last seen in Sooryavanshi with Akshay Kumar , while Siddhant starred in the domestic noir thriller Gehraiyaan that received polarised reviews. On the other hand, Ishaan Khatter was last seen in Khali Peeli with Ananya Panday.

Phone Bhoot is directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Ravi Shankaran and Jasvinder Singh Bath. It has been produced by Excel Entertainment which is headed by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar. The film is slated to hit the theatres on November 4, 2022.

Phone Booth: The Movie's Developmental Hell, Ending & Why Jim Carrey Quit Explained

Back in 2002, one of the most unusual and memorable mainstream thrillers to come out of Hollywood was released: "Phone Booth," directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Colin Farrell. The title is not figurative or metaphorical but a literal description of where the bulk of the movie is set, as Farrell's hot-shot publicist Stu Shepard is trapped inside a New York City phone booth by a menacing psychopath (Kiefer Sutherland) equipped with a sniper rifle and a knack for teaching lessons.

The film, written by genre screenwriting king Larry Cohen, originated with an idea the writer had in the 1960s when he pitched it to filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. As Farrell told Yahoo for a feature on the film's 20th anniversary, neither Hitchcock nor Cohen could devise a plausible reason for their hero to be trapped inside a phone booth for an entire movie. "People were trying to crack this Larry Cohen script and see how it could be done, and how it could be done without being an exercise of cinematic tedium, because it was all set in one place."

Why was the Phone Booth movie in developmental hell for so long?

That, in essence, was why "Phone Booth" took so long to develop, because neither Larry Cohen nor Alfred Hitchcock were able to solve the seemingly simple narrative problem: what could possibly force a man to stay in a phone booth against his will? Sometime in the late '90s, Cohen realized a bad guy with a sniper rifle could do just that.

Once Cohen landed on the sniper idea, Hitchcock was long dead, but Joel Schumacher, fresh off his "Batman" run and looking for a new project after the dissolution of his shelved "Batman Unchained" sequel, took up the reins and several different A-list stars were interested. But it was up-and-comer, Colin Farrell, having worked with Schumacher before on the military drama "Tigerland," who ended up with the job.

"Joel called me because we'd worked on 'Tigerland' together and he said, 'Listen, I have this script. Will you have a look at it?'" Farrell told Yahoo. "And I read it and loved it, and just saw it as the challenge that it became."

However, the Irish star wasn't the only one picked for the leading part, nor was Schumacher the initial pick for the director's chair.

Why did Jim Carrey quit Phone Booth & who else was considered before Colin Farrell?

Before Colin Farrell took the challenging role as the lead in "Phone Booth," Joel Schumacher developed the project with Jim Carrey in the lead role. "I had many meetings with Jim, and he was gonna do it," Schumacher told SPLICEDwire . But Carrey dropped out, which seemed natural to the filmmaker since he considered it a strange fit in the first place: "I had always thought it was odd that he wanted to do it ... And then he got cold feet and I understood — I really did. He was uncomfortable with the role."

Larry Cohen's script got a lot of attention in Hollywood before it ended up in Schumacher's hands. Filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay were interested, as were stars like Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Anthony Hopkins, Robin Williams, Nicolas Cage, and Mel Gibson (who was also interested in possibly directing the film himself). But fans of the movie are probably in agreement that nobody could have done better than Farrell.

Phone Booth: What happened at the end with Kiefer Sutherland's sniper?

Of course, no matter who was stuck in the phone booth in "Phone Booth," the whole movie falls apart without a suitably menacing voiced bad guy behind the sniper scope. For the role of "The Caller," Joel Schumacher secured Kiefer Sutherland , who had also worked with the filmmaker multiple times before in movies like "The Lost Boys" and "Flatliners." Sutherland has one of the most distinctive voices in Hollywood, and he gives The Caller an intimidating, gravelly edge, even as viewers, just like Colin Farrell's character in the movie, never see his face.

"Phone Booth" ends with the cops finally tracing The Caller to his sniper's nest, only to find a dead body that they believe to be the criminal, but who Stu recognizes as a pizza delivery guy from the beginning of the movie. Then, in his only actual on-screen appearance in the film, Sutherland's Caller visits Stu as he's being carted away in an ambulance, warning him that he'll be back if the honesty he was forced to embrace over the course of the movie doesn't last, he and his sniper rifle will be back again. Then, the titular phone booth is shown ringing again ... could The Caller still be at work on another victim?

Whether this could have been intended as leaving the door open to a sequel or just a fun stinger ending to leave the audience on a high-energy note isn't known. But perhaps it isn't too late for The Caller to return in "Phone Booth 2," assuming there are still any operational phone booths anywhere in the world.

You would never know this is Wells’ directorial debut for a feature film, as she masterfully balances the love between father and daughter with the unspoken emotional chasm that divides them, perfectly capturing the static, impenetrable tension at the heart of their relationship. The film delves into the dual nature of depression: the sufferer, Calum, who cannot express his pain, especially to the closest people in his life, and the loved one, Sophie, who may sense the disarray but is powerless to help, is too young to understand. What’s missing are all of the machinations of humankind, all of the complex, unspoken avenues between people, all of the neuronal pathways that make our emotions seemingly impossible to communicate, to even understand in the first place. Sophie’s recollections of a vacation secretly plagued by desolation and despair, of a man she desperately seeks to understand, are mere representations of a reality she does not comprehend, leaving Sophie to grapple with the elusive truth behind her father’s actions, the ambiguous impact it’s had on her life.
