The authors felt during their several years of teaching experience that students fail to understand the books written on Research Methodology because generally they are written in technical language. Since this course is not taught before the Master’s degree, the students are not familiar with its vocabulary, methodology and course contents. The authors have made an attempt to write it in very non- technical language. It has been attempted that students who try to understand the research methodology through self-learning may also find it easy. The chapters are written with that approach. Even those students who intend to attain high level of knowledge of the research methodology in social sciences will find this book very helpful in understanding the basic concepts before they read any book on research methodology. This book is useful those students who offer the Research Methodology at Post Graduation and M.Phil. Level. This book is also very useful for Ph.D. Course Work examinations.

Research is a critical, careful, scholarly, scientific, positive, exhaustive investigation or an organized and systematic inquiry of facts or answer to questions and solution to the problems. The term ‘research design’ means drawing a tentative outline, a blue print and a scheme, planning or arranging a strategy of conducting research with a through knowledge about research methodology. It can enable certain guidelines and procedure to pursue authentic and relevant investigation with a professional standard. It is a logical and systematic plan for collecting data, measurement and analysis of data and prepared for a research study. The research proposal is a written plan for a study and it reveals what the researcher intends to do. In this paper the specific emphasis is given to the ‘research design’ keeping in mind the ‘empirical studies’[1], important concepts in research design, classify the major types of designs and an attempt is also made to present a format of a research project. Any scientific investigation must begin with some structure or plan. This structure defines the number and the type of variables to be studied and their relationship to one another. Such a structure is termed a design.

Research designs are either experimental or non-experimental. Experimental research is conducted mostly in laboratories in the context of basic research. The principle advantage of experimental designs is that it provides the opportunity to identify cause-and-effect relationships. Non-experimental research, e.g., case studies, surveys, correlation studies, is non-manipulative observational research usually conducted in natural settings. While laboratory-controlled experimental studies tend to be higher in internal validity, non-experimental studies tend to be higher in external validity.

Research Methodology Research method is a method or scientific technique to obtain data with specific purposes and uses. The scientific means or techniques in question are where research activities are carried out based on scientific characteristics. This is a set of rules, activities, and procedures used by the perpetrators. The methodology is also a theoretical analysis of a method or method. Research is a systematic investigation to increase knowledge, as well as systematic and organized efforts to investigate certain problems that require answers. The nature of research can be understood by studying various aspects that encourage research to do it properly. Every person has a different motivation, including influenced by their goals and profession. Motivation and research objectives in general are basically the same, namely research is a reflection of the desire of people who always try to know something. The desire to acquire and develop knowledge is a basic human need which is generally a motivation to conduct research. The validity of research data can be obtained by using valid instruments, using appropriate and adequate amounts of data sources, as well as correct data collection and analysis methods. To obtain reliable data, the instrument must be reliable and the research carried out repeatedly. Furthermore, to obtain objective data, the number of sample data sources approaches the population. Each study has specific goals and uses. In general, there are three types of research objectives, namely the nature of discovery, verification and development. The finding means that the data obtained from research is truly new data that has not been previously known.

100 Questions (and Answers) About Research Methods

100 Questions (and Answers) About Research Methods

  • Neil J. Salkind
  • Description

"How do I create a good research hypothesis?"

"How do I know when my literature review is finished?"

"What is the difference between a sample and a population?"

"What is power and why is it important?"

In an increasingly data-driven world, it is more important than ever for students as well as professionals to better understand the process of research. This invaluable guide answers the essential questions that students ask about research methods in a concise and accessible way.

"This is a concise text that has good coverage of the basic concepts and elementary principles of research methods. It picks up where many traditional research methods texts stop and provides additional discussion on some of the hardest to understand concepts."

"I think it’s a great idea for a text (or series), and I have no doubt that the majority of students would find it helpful. The material is presented clearly, and it is easy to read and understand. My favorite example from those provided is on p. 7 where the author provides an actual checklist for evaluating the merit of a study. This is a great tool for students and would provide an excellent “practice” approach to learning this skill. Over time students wouldn’t need a checklist, but I think it would be invaluable for those students with little to no research experience."

I already am using 3 other books. This is a good book though.

Did not meet my needs

I had heard good things about Salkind's statistics book and wanted to review his research book as well. The 100 questions format is cute, and may provide a quick answer to a specific student question. However, it's not really organized in a way that I find particularly useful for a more integrated course that progressively develop and builds upon concepts.

comes across as a little disorganized, plus a little too focused on psychology and statistics.

This text is a great resource guide for graduate students. But it may not work as well with undergraduates orienting themselves to the research process. However, I will use it as a recommended text for students.

Key Features

· The entire research process is covered from start to finish: Divided into nine parts, the book  guides readers from the initial asking of questions, through the analysis and interpretation of data, to the final report

· Each question and answer provides a stand-alone explanation: Readers gain enough information on a particular topic to move on to the next question, and topics can be read in any order

· Most questions and answers supplement others in the book: Important material is reinforced, and connections are made between the topics

· Each answer ends with referral to three other related questions: Readers are shown where to go for additional information on the most closely related topics

Sample Materials & Chapters

Question #16: Question #16: How Do I Know When My Literature Review Is Finished?

Question #32: How Can I Create a Good Research Hypothesis?

Question #40: What Is the Difference Between a Sample and a Population, and Why

Question #92: What Is Power, and Why Is It Important?

The first step in any research is the formulation of a hypothesis. A hypothesis is a statement regarding a particular population’s size or behaviour. This is followed by research designs. Samples are the group of individuals chosen for a study.

The data collected is analyzed using various techniques. They may be observational or experimental. Regardless of the technique used, the study must answer two research questions. The data collection is based on several methods, including observational research, experimentation, simulation, and derived methodology.

  • Define the main issues which should receive the attention of the researcher in formulating the research problem. Give suitable examples.
  • Explain in brief the stages in the data processing.
  • Briefly explain the significance of data processing. What is the problem associated with data processing?

Firstly, you need to determine whether you’re conducting an ex post facto study. This type of research design is used to investigate the effects of a situation after it happens.

In this case, the researcher can use data not relevant to the problem understudies, such as cash register receipts or customer grievance data. Alternatively, you can use a sample from a national survey.
