Applicants to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School must provide two written essays of no more than 500 words each. The school’s first essay question requests several common elements of a traditional personal statement—career goals, why our school—plus a less common Plan B option. For the second required essay, candidates are asked to discuss a situation in which they helped create a positive impact for another person, group, or organization and to explain how the experience has influenced their view of what makes a responsible leader. Applicants with more to share about themselves or issues to explain can use the school’s optional essay to (briefly) offer this key information. UNC Kenan-Flagler 2023–2024 Essay Tips

Kenan-Flagler’s career-related essay focuses strictly on applicants’ initial post-MBA job. Business schools know only too well that students regularly change their long-term professional plans after being exposed through the MBA experience to new people, information, and options and after learning new skills and ways of looking at the world and themselves. Given that reality, asking about candidates’ long-term goals can in some ways be a waste of time, if an admissions committee is not simply doing so to see evidence that the applicant has put serious thought into their plan for attending business school. With the first part of this prompt, Kenan-Flagler wants to know that you have thoroughly considered this next step in your career and are pursuing an MBA for very clear, specific reasons—not because you feel you are supposed to or because you are following in a parent’s footsteps, and definitely not because you do not know what else to do at this juncture in your life! (Believe it or not, these are all actual reasons some people choose to earn the degree.) Kenan-Flagler, like all top programs, wants engaged, driven, and focused individuals who are ready to be an active part of its MBA experience and to do big things with the knowledge and skills they acquire from it. Although the school does not ask you to lay out your background and explain how you reached this choice, providing some basic context for your goal is a good idea (just be succinct!) to ensure that the admissions committee understands that your plans are reasonable and fitting for you.

The school is also looking for a brief explanation of “Why Kenan-Flagler?” The admissions committee wants evidence that you have researched its MBA program thoroughly enough to have pinpointed resources and offerings that directly align with your particular interests and needs. This is the part of our essay analysis where we once again urge you to get to know a school well beyond its website and published materials. If at all possible, visit the campus or sit in on a class in person right now (or at least do so online), and connect with students and alumni, read recent press releases and student blogs, and peruse the Kenan-Flagler YouTube channel. Identify clubs, events, courses, initiatives, and other opportunities that resonate with you and relate to who you want to be by the time you graduate and going forward in your career. Ideally, Kenan-Flagler offers one or more specific resources or experiences that you believe are vital in achieving your goals and are not available elsewhere. When you include this information in your essay, do not simply provide a list but instead explain how you will engage with these elements of the MBA program and what you expect to gain from them.

With career goals essays, candidates often feel they must be totally unequivocal in their stated aspirations, but with the second part of this essay prompt, Kenan-Flagler is giving applicants room to speculate on and discuss other options. The admissions committee knows that sometimes the best-laid plans do not play out as expected or might even yield unintended results, and the school wants to know not only that you are prepared to switch gears and recommit to a different path, if necessary, but also that you are fully capable of doing so. The key is to show that your alternate goal is just as connected to your skills, interests, and ambitions as your original plan and does not come “out of left field,” so to speak. For example, you would probably have a difficult time convincing the admissions committee that your short-term goal is to work in technology consulting while your alternate goal would be to work in human resources, because these industries, for the most part, require entirely different skills and personalities. Just be mindful that both goals you present must be plausible and achievable.

Essay 2 is required. Your response should be no longer than 500 words and should address the following question:

Reflect on a project or initiative you were involved in that had a significant positive impact on a community, organization, or individual. how did this experience shape your sense of responsibility as a future leader dedicated to making a difference in the world .

Although Kenan Flagler asks you to explain how the experience you discuss in this essay has influenced the kind of responsible leader you intend to be in the future, take note that you do not have to have served as the leader in the story you are sharing. This—and the fact that you can draw your story from any area of your life (professional, personal, community/volunteer)—opens up your options quite a bit. Your core goal here is to describe a time when your actions resulted in a positive outcome for others and the result left a lasting mark on you as well. 

You will obviously have to convey what the “positive impact” ultimately was, and on whom. And despite the limited word count, do your best to “show,” or really spell out, how things unfolded—rather than just stating the outcome or flatly presenting the situation—to give the admissions reader perspective on how you conduct yourself and achieve. The admissions committee wants to understand that the decisions you made (or were involved in making) and the actions you took clearly paid off and that an organization, individual, or group subsequently experienced an improvement of some kind. And because past behavior is generally believed to be a reliable indicator of future behavior, by explaining your specific role in the situation, you show the admissions committee not only some of the skills you possess but also how you apply them.

As part of your discussion of what you took away from the experience with respect to how you anticipate conducting yourself as a leader in the future, be sure to touch on why you believe making a positive difference for others matters. This will provide the admissions reader with some insight into your values as well as your capabilities and could help you stand out. Kenan-Flagler wants individuals who intend to use their knowledge and talents to achieve good things not just for themselves but also for the communities they belong to, and ideally, to the world. So show the admissions committee you are just this kind of candidate.

Essay 3 is optional. We encourage you to tell us more about who you are so we can get to know you as a person and potential member of the Carolina community. Use this essay to convey information that you may not have otherwise been able to in the application. Your response should be no longer than 200 words.

Optional topics:, – personal or professional accomplishments, – interests and passions, – gaps in work experience or inconsistent academic performance, – context for recommender selection, – a fun fact about yourself.

Kenan-Flagler’s optional essay prompt swings the door wide open (or as wide as 200 words will allow, that is) for applicants to discuss pretty much anything they feel strongly that the admissions committee needs to know about them. In general, we tend to believe that the best use of the optional essay is to explain confusing or problematic issues in your candidacy, and this prompt obviously offers an opportunity to do that. However, Kenan-Flagler does not stipulate that you can only discuss a problem area in this essay and even offers some lighthearted suggestions in its “optional topics” list. So this is where you can technically share anything you feel the admissions committee must be aware of to fully understand you as a candidate and evaluate you effectively. We caution you against trying to fill this space simply because you fear that not doing so would somehow count against you, though. (It will not, and remember, whenever you submit an additional essay, you are asking the admissions committee to do extra work on your behalf, so make sure that time is warranted!) If you ultimately decide to write an optional essay, avoid being overly verbose or needlessly creative. Simply craft a brief submission that reveals this illuminating new aspect of your candidacy.

Re-Applicant Essay: Essay 4 is required only for previous applicants to any UNC MBA program format. Your response should be no longer than 100 words and should address the following prompt:

The Career Goals Essay

For example, if you aim to work in real estate, this is an essay to take seriously. UNC Kenan-Flagler is well-known for their alumni’s success in the real estate field, and showing them that you also strive to achieve that same success is wholly beneficial to your chances of being admitted. 

There are three aspects to the career goals essay: 

• What you want your future profession to look like.
• Why an MBA is necessary to advance your career.
• Particularly, why a degree from UNC Kenan-Flagler will be most beneficial to you and your job plan. 

Your aspirations need to be convincing, ambitious, and realistic. The admissions committee is looking for applicants who have meaningful goals grounded in their past experiences, and it’s important that you relate that notion in your essay, however it applies to your experience in life. 

The Behavioral Essay

To make it simple: the behavioral essay is meant to show UNC Kenan-Flagler that you have developed some sort of leadership skills, what your values are as a leader, and how you are going to most benefit from their development programs. 

The admissions committee is looking for applicants that are self-reflective. Whether it’s through a setback you’ve experienced, or how you dealt with situations that have gone awry, the school is looking for students who are resilient and able to learn from their mistakes. 

Do not overexaggerate (or underexaggerate!) the situations you decide to write about. Be honest about what happened; UNC Flagler is looking for genuine people to join their campus community, and they are less likely to admit an applicant who has overinflated their prior experiences. 

Last but not least, make sure to describe what you learned and how you implemented this in a subsequent situation. This is an expected element of the behavioral essay, even if it’s not directly written in the prompt. Prompts that deal with these topics can be daunting, especially when they require you to write about a weakness you have or a failure you’ve experienced.

Once you’ve completed your application, the optional UNC MBA essay gives you an additional opportunity to provide the AdCom with any additional information or clarity that you feel would enhance your application.

One trap that MBA applicants fall into is using the additional space provided by this essay to write on a whole new topic. However, this is not always the best idea.

You should only make use of this essay if you what you write will provide context to an element of your application to improve your candidacy—you don’t want to jeopardize your chances by adding unnecessary noise to your application.

UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA Essay Tips & Deadlines [2022 – 2023]

Are you a team leader? Are you committed to sustainable enterprise? Are you seeking resources and intellectual capital needed to shape both business and government? The Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina has two required essays and one optional essay.

UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA essay #1

Please respond to the questions below that will assist us in learning more about you:  (500 words)

• What are your immediate career goals and how will you benefit from earning an MBA at Kenan-Flagler Business School.
• As the business world continues to evolve, circumstances can change and guide you in a different direction. Should your goals that you provided above not transpire, what other opportunities would you explore?

What do you see yourself doing immediately upon graduation and why? Perhaps include the most influential experience that convinced you to go down this path? And then the critical: Why do you need an MBA from UNC with its approach to business education to realize your dream?

UNC also wants to know your Plan B. If you are aiming for Goldman Sachs and a career in investment banking, would your backup plan be a similar position with, let’s say, Bank of America or would it be a position in corporate finance or with a startup? If you are aiming for McKinsey, Bain, or BCG, what would your Plan B be? Perhaps a position in a leadership rotation program? Or would it be working for a company like Deloitte or A. T. Kearney?

Your Plan B needs to be at least as achievable as Plan A – if not more so. It should also be related to A so that the education you receive can also help you attain it.

UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA essay #2

We all belong to different communities representing various aspects of who we are, including groups we belong to, where we come from, how we think, what we believe, and how we see and experience the world. The process of discovery is strengthened when people with diverse perspectives and life experiences come together to share and learn from one another, negotiate differences, and engage in diplomacy. How do you envision furthering your growth as an inclusive leader as a MBA student and future business leader? (500 words)

This is a big question with limited room for your answer. You can succinctly – perhaps illustrating with a brief example or anecdote – discuss an aspect of your identity and how in the past you included someone of a different identity or belief system. Illustrate with a brief example or anecdote. Then bring this story and value forward to your hoped-for experience at UNC and as a future business leader. How will you use that previous experience to continue down the inclusive path you establish at UNC and beyond?

UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA essay #3 (Optional)

We encourage you to tell us more about who you are so we can get to know you as a person and potential member of the Carolina community. Use this essay to convey information that you may not have otherwise been able to in the application. (200 words) Optional topics:

• Personal or professional accomplishments
• Interests and passions
• Gaps in work experience or inconsistent academic performance
• Context for recommender selection
• A fun fact about yourself

Key elements in the instructions for this optional essay: 

• “Tell us more about who you are so we can get to know you as a person.” This is not about the widgets or apps you’ve created or the 3-letter acronyms that define your work. It’s about you as a human being and potential member of their community. Why should they want to hang out with you?
• “Convey information that you may not have otherwise been able to in the application.” Don’t repeat material found elsewhere in the app. No grand finales. 

While you could use it to provide context for an application weakness, you can also use this essay for “interests and passions” or a “fun fact about yourself.” Let them see this side of you, which may not come through in the required portions of the application.

Again, they are genuinely trying to meet you and assess whether you will add to their community. Give them reasons to conclude that you will.

UNC Kenan-Flagler Application Essays

From the admissions committee: You’ll respond to two required essay questions and one optional question. Your responses should be concise, clear, and introspective, as we’ll use them to learn more about you, your motivations, and your aspirations.

Required Essay 1

Your response should be no longer than 500 words and should address the following questions:

What are your immediate career goals and how will you benefit from earning an MBA at Kenan-Flagler Business School?

As the business world continues to evolve, circumstances can change and guide you in a different direction. should the goals that you provided above not transpire, what other opportunities would you explore.

This first essay in the Kenan-Flagler application asks a primary career goals question and a “Plan B.” Knowing yourself is the best first step in this essay. What has your career taught you, both in hard skills and soft skills? How have leadership opportunities grown your perspective? Think about the experiences of your work life. And what you have learned about yourself.

Then, describe your short-term career goals. As a program, UNC provides individual career guidance and has a recruiter focus. Therefore, realistic career goals help the admissions committee imagine you at UNC. Finally, show a clear link between your career goals and your MBA. What skills will you gain from classes and clubs to bring to your post-MBA job?

Everyone’s life takes twists and turns. And, often, your path takes you in another direction. For that reason, this essay also asks about your Plan B. To answer the question, consider how your experience and MBA can apply to different goals.

For example, your Plan A is to work in consulting and then transition to a strategy role at a CPG firm. If you cannot land that job, you could look for in-house strategy roles to gain experience. Or, you could work in a different kind of professional services firm, such as marketing research. Finally, as long as you focus on the type of work that appeals to you and the roles that fit, you will find the right path.

Required Essay 2

Your response should be no longer than 500 words and should address the following question:

Reflect on a project or initiative you were involved in that had a significant positive impact on a community, organization, or individual. How did this experience shape your sense of responsibility as a future leader dedicated to making a difference in the world?

Like most schools, UNC Kenan-Flagler focuses on inclusive leadership and impact leadership, specifically making a difference in the world. Thoughtful and nuanced leadership is vital to your UNC MBA application. That means showing that you are empathetic and understanding. Even if you are not a leader now, you can positively impact those around you. For this essay, you are asked to describe a time when you had that positive impact on a community, an organization or an individual.

Consider using the STAR method for this essay. In the STAR method, you will first describe the Situation, which is the background to the story. Think about where you were working and volunteering, and with what group of people or individuals. Then, you will describe the Task. Think about the Task as the goal you were trying to accomplish. The third part is the Action you took. Here you should be specific about what you thought, said, and did in the situation. Finally, the Result. What happened, and how did everyone feel about it?

Finally, this essay asks you to reflect upon the experience and how it has shaped your sense of responsibility as a future leader. Consider the impact you had and how you felt about it. Ideally, you have already demonstrated a desire to make a difference, and you have the basic ability to do so.

You will also learn more about leadership in your MBA program, and you could write about some of those leadership skills you plan to hone in this essay. As always, be specific and identify programs and professors you are excited to learn from.

Optional Essay

We encourage you to tell us more about who you are so we can get to know you as a person and potential member of the carolina community. use this essay to convey information that you may not have otherwise been able to in the application. your response should be no longer than 200 words., optional topics:.

• Personal or professional accomplishments
• Interests and passions
• Gaps in work experience or inconsistent academic performance
• Context for recommender selection
• A fun fact about yourself

This Kenan-Flagler optional application allows you to discuss either areas of concern or personal topics.

First, identify any gaps in your overall application. Then, consider if you need to explain those gaps. For example, if you do not have the required classes listed, you may have learned the same topics at work. Or consider registering for continuing education classes. Finally, substantial work experience can help offset poor academics. Or, explain that you have taken courses since undergrad and received high grades.

Reapplicant Essay

If you are re-applying to the program, we appreciate your continued interest in unc kenan-flagler. we require a complete application in addition to a brief essay (100 words or less) that describes how your application differs from your previous submission and that alerts us to new test scores, a recent promotion, or other areas that demonstrate how you have strengthened your candidacy..

The Kenan-Flagler application requires re-applicants to complete all of the required essays. You should take 100 words to describe what has changed since your last application. Also, ideas for this essay include updates like a promotion or a new job.

If you don’t have a resume change, consider updates like a change in career focus. Or, you may have learned new skills in other ways, such as in a stretch project at work. Overall, this is your chance to show you are a stronger candidate now than last year.

FOUR WAYS TO CRAFT A COMPELLING MBA ESSAY

Writing an MBA admissions essay can be daunting for many prospective students—but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, the essay section presents a unique opportunity for applicants to show that they’re more than just a GMAT score, a GPA or the jobs outlined on a resume. MBA admissions essays are not one-size-fits-all, and while this flexibility allows applicants to express themselves more freely, the lack of structure can leave many students scratching their heads. The truth is that there is no secret to impressing the admissions committee—and if you try too hard to tell them what they want to hear, you may end up hindering your chances of acceptance. Instead, you should take full advantage of the creative freedom that you’ve been given while also adhering to a few core points that can help you demonstrate that you are an ideal candidate. As you prepare your application, here is some guidance for making your essay stand out.

1. Make Sure You Answer the Question

It may sound obvious, but it is imperative that you actually answer the question that is being asked. When you only vaguely address the question, it shows a lack of focus or worse—an inability to follow directions. To ensure that you are on the right track, stop writing and re-read the question halfway through. Have you veered off topic? Sometimes gaining an outsider’s perspective is necessary to determining whether you have clearly answered the question, so you might also ask for feedback from someone you trust. One good strategy is to have a colleague read your essay, without letting them know the prompt. Can your colleague tell you what the prompt was? If so, you know that you have answered the question clearly.

2. Explain Your Career Goals

The admissions committee is looking for applicants who are dedicated and goal oriented. To demonstrate these qualities, you need to do more than state what industry you see yourself working in post-graduation. Be specific. What kind of company appeals to you? What role do you see yourself stepping into in the future? How is an MBA going to help you get there? Separate your short-term and long-term goals to show that you have distinct objectives for your time in the MBA program and beyond. Then, detail how your studies and work experiences contribute to your overall strengths and help differentiate you as an applicant. Most important, explain how an MBA degree is going to help you achieve your long-term career aspirations. It may help to look through the course catalog and identify specific classes that will allow you to reach your goals. Do market research to demonstrate your knowledge of the industry and your understanding of recent trends and developments within the field, and consider including a timeline for your career objectives so that the admissions team can see you have a realistic vision.

3. Be Clear and Concise

Wordiness, particularly in the introduction, will get you nowhere—and may turn off the reader. In fact, U.S. News & World Report noted that many schools have  cut the essay length by as much as half . Pay attention to your word count, and be sure you don’t exceed the maximum length requirement. Many schools consider it far more impressive when a student’s writing is straightforward and succinct, rather than long and wordy. It is a skill that shows discipline and attention to detail, and one that the admissions committee knows will be valuable in the business world, whether a person is giving a presentation, pitching an idea or composing a report. However, it can still be easier to start out with more content and trim as needed. That way you can make sure you cover all the essential points.

4. Highlight Your Unique Selling Points

It’s important to reflect on what personal qualities or experiences might give you an edge over other prospective students. Share specific anecdotes and vivid details to make your essay more memorable and help distinguish you from other applicants. Many schools offer an optional additional essay, and it can be in your best interest to answer this question. Depending on the school’s essay prompts, it can be challenging to share everything that makes you a viable candidate within the confines of the required essay questions. Feel free to use the optional essay to present any facts or details that show a different side of you. If there are any inconsistencies in your academic or professional background, the optional essay is a great chance to address them.

However, with a highly-regarded STEM-designated business analytics major, the competition to join Kenan-Flagler’s elite MBA is more difficult than ever. 

That’s why we’ve prepared this guide to help you use your Kenan-Flagler admissions interview to stand out. We’ve rounded up not only our best tips but have also included sample interview questions to ensure you give your Kenan-Flagler interview your best shot. 

Making sure you shine during your Kenan-Flagler interview is no easy task. 

UNC interviews, since they are conducted by the admissions committee, tend to be highly personalized and focused on getting to know you better . During the interview, the interviewer is also trying to gauge how solid your motivations for wanting to pursue an MBA are, how interested you seem in the Kenan-Flagler program, and if you are truly a good fit for UNC’s tight-knit community.

Every year, UNC Kenan Flagler selects a group of outstanding professionals to join its annual class of around 250 students. With a strong emphasis on diversity, there is no “typical” UNC student, yet the average admitted student for the Class of 2025 did tend to have a 696 average GMAT score and 5 years of work experience. 

Beyond the impressive statistics, though, UNC is looking for candidates who want to make a positive impact on the world through their careers and be active contributors to the Tar Heel family. That’s why, in addition to strong academic performance (demonstrated through the GMAT and university grades), Kenan-Flagler seeks candidates who possess the following qualities:

LEADERSHIP & TEAMWORK

• Tell me about a time when you didn’t get along with someone on your team. What did you do?
• Tell me about one instance when you disagreed with your boss and how you handled the situation. 
• Do you have any experience leading or managing a team?
• For you, what is the difference between a manager and a leader?
• Tell me about a time you were a leader. 

MISCELLANEOUS BEHAVIORAL

• Tell me an example of when things didn’t work out as you planned. 
• Tell me about a time when you were pushed to your limits at work.
• How would your friends describe you?
• How would your manager describe you?
• What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Despite your most diligent preparation, you will almost always receive a question you had not prepared. 

First, stay calm and take a deep breath . You have already made it this far in the process, and one question will not trip you up!

Second, make sure you directly answer the question the interviewer asked you. For example, if the interviewer asks you about a time you had to deal with a difficult manager, make sure to tell a story about a difficult manager and how you handled the situation. 

If you’re having trouble thinking of an answer or an example to support your answer , however, take a drink of water to give yourself a few more minutes to think. If you really can’t think of an example from your personal or professional experience, you can use a hypothetical answer about how you would act in a certain situation. 

Finally, assume that the interviewer is testing how you think on your feet and respond to questions you didn’t prepare in advance. Though your answer might not be as polished as if you’d had weeks to rehearse it, smile and confidently respond to show you can handle any question they throw at you. 

Several years ago, I had the pleasure of helping a client, Phillip, put the finishing touches on his MBA admissions essays . A stellar candidate in all regards, those essays secured him interviews at all of the impressive set of elite programs he applied to! 

Phillip was overjoyed when he called me with the news but was surprised that the first words out of my mouth (after “Congratulations!” of course) were, “Well it sounds like we have a lot of practicing ahead of us.”

Though Phillip knew the statistics — at most elite MBAs, only 50% of candidates called to interview are actually admitted — he felt he’d already overcome the toughest hurdle and could relax a bit. “I’m really good with people,” he said, “so I’m just going to go in there and be myself.”

Though there are many parts to a successful UNC application, the essays are a place for your unique voice and experience to shine.  We’ll share UNC supplemental essay examples in this article. In total, you’ll have to write three essays and answer five fill-in-the-blank responses on your application. What are the UNC supplemental essay prompts?

Before we look at UNC Chapel Hill essays that worked, let’s break down the prompts for the short answer questions. First, good UNC supplemental essay examples get specific about how the writer would fit into the UNC Chapel Hill community. All the questions center around the values of identity, diversity, inclusion, and community. As such, you’ll notice that all three of the UNC supplemental essay examples we provide touch on these themes.

Notice which prompts jump out at you

Read through the UNC essay prompts a few times. Do you find yourself gravitating towards one? Does an idea or a memory pop into your head? Trust that impulse and don’t overthink your choice. As long as you start early enough, you’ll have time to choose a different prompt if necessary. In fact, ideas or even drafts for one prompt may become material for a different prompt later. Nevertheless, you must choose something to start with.

Choose the prompts that showcase your strengths

The college application process is challenging in part because every student has limited space to showcase who they are. A strong application showcases a student’s strengths with clarity and precision. When you read the UNC essay prompts, do you see a space for your strengths to shine? For example, prompt #3 may be a great fit for a service-oriented and compassionate person. If you’re struggling to think of strengths, look at your activities list, considering skills you’ve demonstrated in your extracurriculars.

Brainstorm and get feedback before you choose

Consider spending 15 minutes brainstorming for each of the prompts. Present those ideas to a trusted mentor, teacher, or friend who has knowledge of the college process. Ask them which ideas are most compelling, and which stories would represent you the best on the page. Getting feedback early in the process can help you write highly polished UNC Chapel Hill supplemental essays. The first of our UNC supplemental essay examples is responding to the following prompt:

UNC Essay Prompt:

Tell us a story that helps us better understand a person, place, or thing you find inspiring., example #1: a story about inspiration.

When I was told that because of a fracture in my spine, I had been paralyzed, at first I experienced curiosity. Why is it that any other cell can be regenerated except for the cells in the spine? 

Slowly, through hundreds of questions and hours of searching through the resources available at the hospital, I learned that the neurons in the spinal cord responsible for delivering messages to the brain are so complex, it is almost impossible for the cells to be recreated by the body. Essentially, the spinal cord is like an electrical cord, delivering electrical signals from the body to the brain and back. During a spinal cord injury, this cord is severed. 

However, through further research and independent exploration, I discovered that what the world had once believed about the nervous system and its ability to regenerate was not completely true. Neuroplasticity, for example, may allow victims of neural injuries to regain function by “training” other sections of the brain. 

The possibilities for discovery, especially in relation to human biology and the nervous system, inspire me. Whenever I get to a point where I think I may understand a topic, a new idea emerges that challenges me to ponder new aspects again. There is so much to learn, and I know I will never stop uncovering new topics. I hope to continue this exploration at Chapel Hill, embarking on an endless path of learning. 

Why this UNC Essay Worked

One feature of all successful UNC Chapel Hill supplemental essays is clearly answering the entire prompt. This prompt asks for a story about something you find inspiring. The writer describes how they are inspired by learning about scientific discoveries because of a severe injury they have. They packed a lot of detail about themselves, their injury, their thoughts, and their future aspirations into a 250-word response.

Secondly, UNC Chapel Hill essays that worked are usually personal, and always individual. That is to say, they talk about the writer’s unique experiences and background, sometimes in a vulnerable way. Strong UNC supplemental essay examples also avoid the trap of talking about someone else and forgetting to showcase the writer. Instead, this author uses their experience of being injured to reveal how they are curious and persistent. The reader can see this writer is resilient, curious, and hopeful for the future.

Effective UNC supplemental essay examples also successfully relate the writer’s experience back to UNC Chapel Hill, even if subtly. All of our successful UNC essay examples demonstrate specific reasons the student is a good fit for UNC. This writer was able to demonstrate how they value UNC’s values of research, diversity, and service. As such, they make a strong case for why they should be admitted.

University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill Essay Prompt:

What do you hope will change about the place where you live, essay #2: a change in your community.

“Really, surgeries are so much less painful than what I experience every day due to inaccessibility or people’s stereotypes.” 

My friend was paralyzed before she was a year old. She has been through dozens of surgeries, surgeries with the possibility of leaving her blind, even dead. She is the strongest person I know. So, when she told me that the most significant cause of her pain was due to society and not her physical barriers, I was shocked. 

Through my experiences after my spinal cord injury, I started to notice new aspects of the world. Stairs instantly became blockades when I had never even noticed them before. Sometimes, there were cars parked in front of the ramps, making it impossible for me to access the building. When I talk to my peers or school officials regarding issues such as these, I am often met with the same response, “Oh, I never noticed.” 

Repeatedly confronted with these answers, I realized that if I didn’t share my experiences, really, no one will ever notice. In addition to this, if no one is confronted about the stereotypes that one holds against a certain group in society, these biases will continue to be held. 

Today, much of society is inaccessible. It’s just a fact. Also, stereotypes remain a significant obstacle to the development and success of minority communities. However, I hope that through my life, I am able to spread awareness about these issues, helping to bring in greater understanding and accessibility. 

Like all successful UNC Chapel Hill supplemental essay examples, this essay shows, rather than tells, the author’s main idea. Rather than jumping straight into accessibility issues, the author tells us details about their friends’ life and their own life. Through these details, the author gives context for their concern about this issue. 

Despite the prompt asking writers to look outward, this author doesn’t miss the opportunity to share about themself. After all, strong UNC supplemental essay examples really showcase the applicant’s personality, character, values, and goals. In this essay, we get a clear sense that the author is persistent, caring, brave, justice-oriented, and hopeful. These traits make them an appealing candidate for UNC Chapel Hill.

Many impactful UNC Chapel Hill supplemental essay examples open with a strong hook, and this essay is no different. A hook is critical because it catches the reader’s attention, inviting them to stay focused throughout your essay.

While this author uses dialogue, other hooks include setting a scene (i.e., “I stood at the edge of the diving board”). It could be something rare about yourself (i.e., “I’m the only teenager in my class who loves waking up early”).  This essay’s use of dialogue leaves the reader wondering who is speaking, what they meant, and how it relates to the author. Most great UNC supplemental essay examples contain a hook that draws the reader in.

The third and final of our UNC supplemental essay examples responds to the prompt: 

UNC Application Essay Prompt:

Most of us have one or more personality quirks. explain one of yours and what it says about you. , essay #3: personality quirk.

I am a person of more than one personality quirk, some of which can be beneficial and others “not so much.” One of my main quirks, however, is the need for constant movement. Whether it is volunteering to demonstrate a mathematical problem in front of the class or bouncing my knee during a test, I believe that I perform best when I am active. 

Delving further into understanding “my little quirk,” I stumbled upon the label of kinesthetic learner. In other words, I want to experience what I am learning by being a part of the process as opposed to merely hearing about the process. During my high school career, I have found that the knee-bouncing, pencil-tapping, etc. subsides when the opportunity presents itself to participate actively in real life simulations. For instance, as a part of the Academy of Emergency Medical Sciences at Pine Forest High School, I participated in strapping fellow classmates to back boards and transporting them from place to place while maintaining proper alignment of the cervical vertebrae. Of course, when performing this task, my knee-bouncing ceased, and I was completely engrossed in the mission at hand.

My hands-on learning may stem from my more than fourteen years of gymnastics training and dance lessons that required continuous movement to learn. I do not consider this process of learning to be a disadvantage but rather a positive influence. It has allowed me a unique ability to focus, creating a sense of discipline as well as the drive and motivation to succeed. This drive is also evident in my active participation in clubs such as Trojan Mentors and National Honor Society, organizations such as The Dance Theatre of Fayetteville, and community involvement. The enjoyment which comes from working and learning hands-on and helping others is why I am drawn to the field of medicine.

As a kinesthetic learner, I learn what I practice and practice what I learn; therefore, I work well solo and as an active participant in group settings. In my preparation to attend a pre-medicine program, I sense that this type of learning will be a positive attribute to my studies. In a clinical setting, one cannot depend on theory alone but rather the practical application of skills. Although the theoretical understanding of material is of utmost importance, it is during those moments that the knee-bouncing will come in handy, proving “my little quirk” to be beneficial, allowing me to accomplish the task before me.

Without a doubt, these UNC essay examples reveal how you can write about any topic in a compelling manner. Often, when students read essay prompts, they spotlight the most outlandish, rare, and dramatic aspect of their life. In this essay, the student talks about their quirk of needing constant movement. Almost all of us know someone like this, but the student writes about this quirk relative to personal accomplishments and goals.

Secondly, while successful UNC supplemental essay examples don’t necessarily need to list accomplishments, this author folds theirs in seamlessly. Indeed, the Common App has a designated space to list extracurriculars and accomplishments. However, if your activities are thematically coherent and support your essay’s point, by all means, include them. Just be careful to choose accomplishments that relate to your topic and strengthen your arguments, rather than relisting a resume.

A third and final compelling aspect of this essay is the author’s deep understanding of their behaviors and motivations. The writer uses their tapping reflex to segue into an exploration of their passions and dreams. They also reveal that they can turn a challenge into an opportunity, a skill immensely helpful in a college setting. Strong UNC Chapel Hill supplemental essay examples paint the author in detail and in a positive light.

How to answer UNC supplemental essays?

Although these UNC supplemental essay examples don’t respond to the exact prompts used today, they demonstrate the core qualities of good essays. In fact, these students wrote clearly and specifically about how their experiences prepared them to be great UNC undergraduates. They also likely used some key tips to be able to write a strong essay.

Here are some tips for how to write a great essay just like the UNC Chapel Hill essays that worked:

Start Early

Since there are two supplemental essays and five fill-in-the-blank responses in addition to the personal statement, it’s important to start early. The final products of essays usually represent multiple hours of brainstorming, writing, and revising. As such, you need time to process your thoughts and get feedback from many sources.

When planning your timeline for the application season, you should factor in plenty of time, especially if you’re still researching schools. Not only do you need to write several essays , but you should revise several times before submitting. This can mean editing alone, but ideally, you’ll ask trusted friends and mentors to provide feedback.

Answer Authentically and Specifically

As we noticed in the UNC supplemental essay examples above, students wrote about personal experiences that were important to them. To write a successful essay, you don’t have to make up stories or exaggerate your life. You can simply be yourself, and tell stories with specificity. 

For example, in our second example, the student showed how simple everyday tasks like climbing the stairs became impossible after getting injured. Rather than saying “My life got harder,” they showed us how it changed. Narrative details can enliven your writing while still conveying key details. This combination of specificity and authenticity will make your essay shine and stand out amongst the crowd.

Relate Your Experiences to UNC

When students wonder how to get into UNC, they should first understand why they want to go to UNC. Since UNC doesn’t have a “why school” essay, writers must base their essays on experiences, not UNC facilities or offerings. In each of these UNC supplemental essay examples, writers demonstrated how their life experiences and personality traits align with UNC’s values. While they spoke about themselves, their examples ultimately made it clear that they are a good fit for the school. Since the UNC acceptance rate is relatively low, it’s important to make sure your application is a clear fit for the school.

Other aspects of your application have the potential to do the same. For example, your extracurricular activities are one of the most important indicators of your interests and commitment to growth. Desirée Rieckenberg lifts students in need

The Massey Award winner and dean of students is always on call to help them navigate difficult situations.

Desirée Rieckenberg’s passion for helping students began when she was in their shoes.

Rieckenberg, the UNC-Chapel Hill dean of students, was a first-generation college student from a rural community when she arrived for her first year at Eastern Illinois University. She was forced to do a lot on her own as she learned how to navigate campus life.

Fortunately, she met people who invested in her when things were good but also supported her when they weren’t. That experience stuck with her and is something she still draws on today.

“The notion of working in a space that allows me to lift up and celebrate folks, and also support people as they navigate something, really rang true to me,” she said.

For helping students in many situations across her 12 years at Carolina, Rieckenberg was given a 2024 Massey Award . The honor recognizes “unusual, meritorious or superior” contributions by University employees.

Rieckenberg sees most of her work at what she calls intersections of the student experience, key moments that include anything from taking a leadership role in a student organization, struggling to pass a class or having a mental health challenge. From there, she strives to help support their success at Carolina.

Nominators highlighted her work creating the Care Team , which meets weekly to assist students experiencing challenges that threaten to disrupt academic progress, and partnering with the Office of Scholarship and Student Aid on a new financial literacy initiative. Carolina hired its first director of financial well-being this spring.

Additionally, Rieckenberg was praised as a “relentless champion” of the Carolina Veterans Resource Center, a “committed collaborator” and an unselfish servant leader who creates a culture of trust within her office.

Her team has grown over the last several years as it serves more students, particularly in times of crisis and emergency. No matter the situation, Rieckenberg keeps the individual student at the forefront.

“Carolina may be a big place, but Carolina should be a place where they feel like they are family and that they’re cared for,” she said.

The nature of her job means she’s as likely to get a call at 3 a.m. as she is at 3 p.m. She’s the primary contact for students going through traumatic life events ranging from the death of a loved one, a serious injury or significant financial setback.

She credits the people around her for helping juggle those difficult situations.

“It comes down to being able to surround yourself with good people and really talented people, and being able to have a supportive family and personal life that allows me to do those things,” Rieckenberg said. “I have a fantastic team of people who do the work and who surround me in a way that lifts up the things we’re doing in support of students. I have a fantastic partner, and I have two kids I’ve had since I’ve been in this role. They have come up in the space that they understand the work I do is important, that it helps and serves so many people.”

Rieckenberg was speechless when told of her Massey Award. She was drawn to this work because she saw its impact first-hand, as a student. She’s humbled to know others see that, too.

“It touches your heart in a way that recognizes an impact,” she said. “That’s really how I got into this work, because I had people who poured into me and created an impactful experience for me. And I continue to do this work with the hope that I can be impactful on our students and our campus and colleagues.”

2020 brought many defining experiences, including: a global pandemic, changes to learning and working environments, and calls for social justice and racial equity. • What conditions caused you to experience inconsistent academics, gaps in work, or low standardized test scores?
• How have you chosen your recommenders?

Make an impact in the community.

The Steve and Debbie Vetter Dean’s Fellows Program is a premier leader-scholar program that offers distinctive opportunities to make a significant contribution to the community, while transforming personally and professionally.

The program enhances Vetter Fellows’ MBA experience through:

• Projects with impact: You will collaborate with your peers, as well as faculty, staff, alumni and others, on projects and initiatives that make a lasting impact, supporting local organizations and diverse communities across the state and country. Many of these projects support underserved populations and address issues related to social impact, economic development, and sustainability.  
• Leadership development: Tailored, hands-on experiences to guide your personal and professional development, including an incoming student retreat, and a specially designed global learning experience. Vetter Fellows also have access to $500 per year in individual reimbursable professional development funds.
• Recruiting: Vetter Fellows have access to a dedicated Career Coach, who will help shape your career goals and prepare you for internship and post-MBA recruiting. Vetter Fellows also attend special events with employers throughout the year, providing an advantage in your post-MBA career search.
• Networking: Vetter Fellows build lasting relationships by connecting with numerous stakeholders who are committed to their education, growth and career. During a variety of special events, you’ll network with other classmates, School leaders, faculty and staff, alumni and business leaders.
• Giving back: Vetter Fellows collaborate with faculty and staff on projects and initiatives of high importance to the dean, and engage in community service projects, making a lasting impact on the UNC Kenan-Flagler and local community.

You have the opportunity to apply for the Vetter Dean’s Fellows Program as part of your admissions application. The selection committee typically chooses approximately 30 Vetter Fellows for each incoming class   and looks for students with a passion to make an impact in the community as well as those with strong academic success and/or relevant leadership experience.

Vetter Dean’s Fellows program benefits

As a Vetter Fellow, you have access to a variety of exclusive enrichment experiences where you hone and apply leadership skills and enhance your personal growth through projects and interaction with UNC faculty, staff, alumni, employers and distinguished guests. Each experiences is intentionally connected to the program pillars: leadership development, recruiting, networking and giving back, as well as UNC Kenan-Flagler’s core values of Integrity, Inclusion, Innovation and Impact.

Signature experiences

• Incoming student retreat: Prior to orientation, you’ll attend a weekend retreat. It kicks off with a social networking event, where you’ll get to know the Vetters, program staff and your fellow students. The weekend also includes a foundational team-building experience with your Vetter Fellows peers, a session with your dedicated Career Coaching liaison, and a leadership workshop where you’ll explore your values, shape your personal development plan, and determine where you want to go after graduation.
• Global experience: This for-credit global experience, the majority of which is funded through the Vetter Deans Fellow program, will expose you to how business is done in a unique global destination. You’ll focus on responsible leadership and gain perspective from local experts and business leaders and engage in rewarding cultural experiences. In spring 2023, Vetter Fellows traveled to Rwanda to immerse themselves in the business and social culture of this rapidly growing nation.
• Early career coaching and resume book: Access to a dedicated Career Coach will help shape your career goals and prepare you for your internship and post-MBA recruiting . The career team also creates an electronic resume book for each Vetter Fellow, presenting them to potential employers in a highly professional way that gives them a competitive advantage in the job market.
• Exclusive programs with the dean and UNC Kenan-Flagler leadership: These semi-formal opportunities allow Vetter Fellows to engage in small group discussions with School leaders where you make important connections and receive advice and mentorship.

Additional annual programming

• Small Bites, Big Ideas: Small group discussions (six to eight Vetter Fellows) around a particular business topic, featuring special guest speakers
• Events with recruiters: Virtual coffee chats, small group discussions and one-on-one conversations allow you to explore career opportunities with employers from a wide variety of industries.
• Vetter Dean’s Fellows discussions: Student-led conversations around topics of interest, these discussions take a variety of formats and often engage faculty, alumni and business leaders.
• Projects in recent years have also included research and recommendations to achieve gender parity in the MBA program at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, a UNC Executive Development learning and development research project to inform product offerings, and recommendations for MBA curriculum innovation and new academic concentrations. 
• Social events: Cultivating lifelong network connections (and friendships) requires a healthy balance of work and play! Recent social events have included trivia, cooking classes, BBQ get-togethers hosted by Vetter Fellows and “ Fridays on the Front Porch” at the Carolina Inn.

Our student committee works alongside Business School leaders to shape the direction of the Vetter Fellows program. The committee designs events, assists with first-year Vetter Fellows projects, and facilitates engagement between first- and second-year Vetter Fellows.

About Me: Jack Zaykowski is from Brooklyn, New York. He is a second-year MBA student concentrating in Consulting and Entrepreneurship. Prior to business school, Jack spent five years at Procor Solutions and Consulting as a risk management consultant. Outside of work and school Jack enjoys playing soccer and basketball, cooking, and walking his dog.

Beyond her professional endeavors, she was associated with a local NGO focusing on women’s empowerment and education. Through this organization, they conducted over 100 workshops in rural areas of India to raise awareness about issues such as child labor, sexual and domestic violence, and drug addiction. She enjoys spending quality moments with her family and friends in her leisure time, indulging in canvas painting, cooking, and listening to music.
