The Bicycle Traffic team is available to supervise students writing a thesis within the study programmes:

Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Transportation Engineering (VWING ) in the School of Architecture and Civil Engineering

Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Civil Engineering (BAUING) in the School of Architecture and Civil Engineering

Master’s programme on Computer Simulation in Science (CSIS) in the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Here you will find a list of all completed theses supervised by our team and their respective summaries.

Research Area and Methods

We focus on the development of cycling research in the following three main areas:

  • basic research investigating bicycle traffic flow and behaviour
  • critical examinations of the benefits and risks of new technologies for cycling and cycling research
  • research exploring the best practices for bicycle infrastructure design, planning, and policy

Learn more about our research here .

Welcoming applications for supervision from all students interested in focusing on a cycling-related topic within these research areas, we are particularly keen to supervise students aiming to explore or employ field studies or simulation in their research. For example, we aim to supervise students who might:

Collect and analyze direct observational data of bicyclists’ behaviours and flows using our MioVision camera

Collect and analyze participant observational data of individual bicyclists’ experiences using our Go Pro cameras and GPS trackers

Develop micro- and macroscopic transportation models for bicycle traffic

Support the development of our bicycle simulator and test its application

Apply for supervision

Students are invited to apply for one of our open topics (listed below) or propose a other cycling-related research topics they would like to investigate through their bachelor’s or master’s thesis. Please contact us at least 3 months before your planned registration date to begin your research.

Before contacting us, please refer to the Prüfungsordnung for your study programme to confirm that you have completed (or will soon complete) all credit requirements to begin your thesis.

To apply for supervision, send an email to Matthias Schaarwächter with the following information:

Your study programme and planned registration date to begin your thesis.

The title of the open topic you are applying to write your thesis on, or the proposed title and a short description of the topic you are proposing.

An approved “Antrag auf Ausgabe einer Aufgabenstellung für eine Thesis”, provided by the Examination Office. (If you have not completed all credits but will before your planned registration date, please explain this in your email.)

Following a review of your application and an initial meeting with a potential supervisor, students must submit a short research exposé describing the proposed research in greater detail. A template for the exposé and guidance are provided to all students who contact us regarding the supervision of master’s and bachelor’s theses. The final determination on supervision is made based on the quality and relevance of the research proposed in the exposé.

Chemistry - Bachelor of Science

Our bachelor program offers an overview of the entire field of chemistry. It is divided into modules in which students acquire credit points (LP, credits). The Bachelor's degree is completed with the acquisition of 180 credit points (approx. 30 per semester) in accordance with the examination regulations. This usually takes 6 semesters.

All Chemistry degree programs are taught in German. A profound knowledge of the German language is therefore required. The Bachelor thesis may be written in German or English. German language courses are offered by the University of Wuppertal.

International applicants should send their application documents directly to the Student admission and registration for international students  (Internationales Studierendensekretriat) of the University of Wuppertal.

More Information

Course of studies

Our program starts with the basics of chemistry. The course “General Chemistry” basics are refreshed giving those students who had little chemistry lessons during their school days the opportunity to bring their knowledge up to date. In the 2nd to 4th semester, we focus on inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry as well as basic knowledge of mathematics and physics. In addition to lectures and exercises, the chemistry course is characterized by practical lab courses which are closely supervised. In the last two semesters, basic knowledge and practical skills are extended in modules like Synthetic Chemistry or Instrumental Analysis and lectures on specialized knowledge in toxicology and law for chemists. In our elective modules, students can choose from a number of options to customize their learning content. The bachelor’s degree is completed with a bachelor thesis in one of our research laboratories. The bachelor thesis is closely supervised by the scientists doing research at the BUW. At the end of the bachelor thesis, you present your work to the fellow students in the bachelor seminar. After the standard study period of 6 semesters, the graduate receives the first professional university degree laying the groundwork to further qualify in one of our master courses.

Institute for Atmospheric and Environmental Research

Bachelor thesis, master thesis, state examinations and doctoral thesis in the research group atmospheric physics

Working in the area of water vapor measurements:.

Water vapor is the most important, naturally occurring trace gas in the atmosphere. In connection with climate change and the associated rise in temperature, water vapor is taking on additional importance. An increase in temperature usually leads to an increase in the water vapor content, which in turn results in a further increase in temperature due to the radiation properties of the water vapor. This is called a positive feedback. Measurements and observation of the development of water vapor over time are therefore of great importance. For this purpose, a new, simple ground device is to be set up in Wuppertal that measures the water vapor column (total water vapor or precipitable water) in the atmosphere. The measurements consist of vertical measurements of the IR temperature of the cloudless sky. These temperatures are directly related to the water vapor content. At the moment, the first experimental measurements are being carried out by hand using simple IR thermometers. In the course of development, some opportunities for collaboration are possible, for example in the context of a bachelor's thesis: - Temperature measurements using IR thermometers and comparisons with satellite observations and other ground-based measurements (e.g. GPS measurements) - Commissioning of IR temperature sensors using an Arduino - Operating the Arduino with the help of solar panels to enable self-sufficient measurements...

Working in the area of GRIPS temperature measurements:

In Wuppertal, temperatures in the mesopause region (approx. 87 km altitude) have been measured since the 1980s. The data evaluation is based on different steps such as the selection of the spectra, different corrections and finally the temperature determination itself. Some of these steps still require the personal intervention or work of a scientist. There is therefore interest in automating parts of the evaluation and using artificial intelligence (AI) at appropriate points. The first steps in this direction have already been taken and the results look promising. In the course of further development, some opportunities for collaboration are possible, for example in the context of a bachelor's or master's thesis.
