UT Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Permanent URI for this collection https://hdl.handle.net/2152/11

This collection contains University of Texas at Austin electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). The collection includes ETDs primarily from 2001 to the present. Some pre-2001 theses and dissertations have been digitized and added to this collection, but those are uncommon. The library catalog is the most comprehensive list of UT Austin theses and dissertations.

Since 2010, the Office of Graduate Studies at UT Austin has required all theses and dissertations to be made publicly available in Texas ScholarWorks; however, authors are able to request an embargo of up to seven years. Embargoed ETDs will not show up in this collection. Most of the ETDs in this collection are freely accessible to all users, but some pre-2010 works require a current UT EID at point of use. Please see the FAQs for more information. If you have a question about the availability of a specific ETD, please contact [email protected].

Some items in this collection may contain offensive images or text. The University of Texas Libraries is committed to maintaining an accurate and authentic scholarly and historic record. An authentic record is essential for understanding our past and informing the present. In order to preserve the authenticity of the historical record we will not honor requests to redact content, correct errors, or otherwise remove content, except in cases where there are legal concerns (e.g. potential copyright infringement, inclusion of HIPAA/FERPA protected information or Social Security Numbers) or evidence of a clear and imminent threat to personal safety or well-being.

This policy is in keeping with the  American Library Association code of ethics  to resist efforts to censor library resources, and the  Society of American Archivists code of ethics  that states "archivists may not willfully alter, manipulate, or destroy data or records to conceal facts or distort evidence."

(Isaak Mikhaĭlovich) Show more Selective etching of silicon dioxide over silicon is a frequently used process in the manufacture of semiconductor devices. Although central to the microelectronics manufacturing process, control strategies for plasma etch systems have been limited to statistical based process control and recipe control techniques, mainly due to a lack of in-situ real-time measurements of process performance. This dissertation focuses on the design, characterization, and implementation of two diagnostics on a research plasma reactor, and their use for process monitoring, empirical model building and advanced process control. The diagnostics added to the reactor during this research included laser interferometry and voltage and current probes. An algorithm was developed to compute etch rate and end-point condition from the laser interferometer signal in near real-time. The RF monitoring sensor measured information about the RF voltage, current, and phase angle at three locations in the power delivery system - before and after the matching network and at the lower electrode. Transmission line analysis showed the importance of accurate characterization of stray capacitance and inductance in the power delivery system. Plasma parameters of impedance, delivered power, and sheath thickness were computed using simple equivalent circuit models for the plasma discharge. Measurement of fundamental and harmonic components of the RF voltage, current, and phase showed that the power generated in the plasma at harmonic frequencies was approximately 3% of the generator power. These diagnostics provided the foundation for steady-state and dynamic model development of the plasma etch process. Several linear and nonlinear steady-state techniques including regression, neural networks, and projection of latent structures (PLS) were used in empirical model building. Dynamic models were also developed using neural network techniques. It was found that both the regression and recurrent neural network model structures provided a satisfactory fit of the data for the operating space investigated, although neural network models provided a dynamic model in a nonlinear state-space formulation. PLS techniques were used for model reduction and variable selection. The most relevant variables for model construction were power, pressure, and chamber impedance. The impedance measurement significantly improved the predictive capability of the model Show more

Show more Entrepreneurialization, the process by which universities are being restructured as overt profit-making multinational businesses, capitalizes upon the rationalization, industrialization and militarization of higher education. This case study focuses on the early stages of the entrepreneurialization of the University of Texas at Austin into a multinational corporation, a model for what is happening to universities throughout the US. This new stage of reorganization is a strategic response to the crisis of higher education in the US that resulted from the campus rebellions of the 1960-70s. While hardly complete, entrepreneurialization is in conflict with the "multiculturalism" movements, for example, that propose reforms that would further subordinate the universities to the needs and interests of diverse disempowered people. Entrepreneurialization has had an unintended side effect: as overt multinational businesses, we can better understand the central relationship of the universities in the international accumulation of capital and the importance of students in the class struggle. As the US model of entrepreneurialization spreads to universities in many other parts of the world as a result of global restructuring it also offers the possibility for fusing new transnational connections among student movements in different countries fighting common struggles. The culmination of a unique development of "adversarial methods," this dissertation combines participant observation, journalistic investigative methods, archival research, Freedom of Information and Open Records requests, budgetary analyses, and social movement research and activism to investigate and analyze a newly emerging multinational institution Show more

Barraclough, Ruth

Korea Foundation Associate Professor of Modern Korean History

Consultation/Advisory Hours

FALL 2024: Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:00 - 5:00 pm

BA (Honours) University of Queensland PhD Australian National University

Interests and Research

Ruth Barraclough is a labor historian of modern Korea with a particular interest in gender, biography and literary history.

Her first book Factory Girl Literature: Sexuality, Violence and Representation in Industrializing Korea is about the working-class women and girls who generated Korea’s industrialization while cherishing ambitions to be writers, novelists and poets. First published by University of California Press in 2012 it was translated into Korean by Professors Kim Won and Jiseung Roh in 2017 (Humanitas Press) where it spent twenty weeks on the history best-seller list and received numerous recommendations: nominated for President Moon Jae-in’s summer reading list by South Korea’s leading book and newspaper editors, nominated for multiple feminist reading lists, nominated for CEO’s alternative summer reading list, and named one of the top ten books of 2017 by the major daily newspaper Kyunghyang Sinmun.

Her forthcoming book Island Ablaze , will be published by Cornell in 2025. Co-edited with Jin-kyung Lee, Sang-kyung Lee and Jae-Yong Kim, Island Ablaze is an anthology of short stories that delve into Korea’s relationship with the United States. For the anthology Ruth translated Choe Jeonghui’s classic 1942 short story Dawn about women graduates of an American missionary school in Seoul.

Her next book, co-authored with Professor Jiseung Roh, is Red Glamour: Korea’s Early Communist Women . Research for this book has encompassed many collections, including the State Archive for Social and Political History in Moscow, the North Korean collection at the National Library of Australia, The International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam, and the FSB Archive in Kuznetsky Most. Red Glamour is under contract for parallel release in English and Korean.

Earlier collective book projects include Gender and Labour in Korea and Japan: Sexing Class , co-edited with Elyssa Faison, (Routledge 2009) and Red Love Across the Pacific , co-edited with Heather Bowen-Struyk and Paula Rabinowitz, (Palgrave 2015).

Ruth first went to South Korea as a seventeen-year-old in 1989, as part of a long running student exchange organized by the Korean Student Christian Federation and the Australian Student Christian Movement. She has written about this episode in her chapter Political Travel at Cold War’s End in Sunyoung Park’s Revisiting Minjung and Korean translation . Prior to coming to Columbia she taught at the Australian National University for seventeen years.

This research project is a comparative study of management of two university libraries (University of the Western Cape and Dhaka University) from two different countries (South Africa and Bangladesh). This research was to identify and document how the functions of management are applied in both libraries.

A sample of the two university libraries&rsquo users, librarians, and library staff were taken. The questionnaire, interview, observation and documentary sources of information were major methods of data collection. In order to provide a brief presentation on how the management functions were applied at other university libraries, a description of how some university libraries in the U.K, U.S.A, Eastern countries and Africa are given. The findings of the study revealed that the problem of inadequate financial support is true for both University libraries, and is the major cause amongst other weaknesses. Both libraries still use a large percentage of non-professional staff and the library service is in desperate need of personnel. However, the observed difference between DUL and UWCL in this comparative study was significant. Services offered in both libraries differ in some cases such as: Consortia, Inter library loans, OPAC, CD-search, e-journals and multimedia. These areas still need to be developed at DUL. UWC have the most of these facilities. Although it needs to improve on aspects such as e-journals, access to data-bases and open access on the Internet.
