We proudly announce our 2nd Year National Thirukkural Essay Competition.

Tamil Sangam of Greater Washington, American Tamil Academy, The Tamil Literary Study Circle of Greater Washington,  and the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America join together to conduct Thirukkural Essay Competition for High School Students (Grades 9 through 12)   in the United States of America.

1. Rules for the Competition

• This competition is limited to students in the USA studying in grades 9 through 12.
• Essays should be written either in English or in Tamil.
• The content of the essays must be based on Thirukkural.
• There is no limit to the number of essays a contestant can submit. One can send more than one essay. However, the essays should be on different topics. For example, an essay written in English should not be translated into Tamil and vice versa. If this happens, both essays will be rejected.
• Those who won the first, second, or third prize in Thirukkural Essay Competition held last year(2021) are not eligible to participate in this year’s competition.
• Essays should be a Word document in Unicode font.
• Essays should be minimum of 1000 words and should not exceed 1,500 words in length.
• References/Bibliography should be included if it is referred from other sources. However, this will not be included in the essay’s word count.
• i) Name of the Contestant; ii) Contestant’s email id; iii) Contestant’s mobile phone number; If any of the above information is included in the essay, then those essays will be rejected.
• Do not place your first name, last name, or your school’s name on any of the pages of the essay.

2. Evaluation Process Award

The Selection Committee will evaluate the essays and select six to eight best essays. The Interview Committee will interview the authors of the selected essays. During the interview, the judges will try to assess the authors’ general knowledge about Thiruvalluvar and Thirukkural. The authors will be asked detailed questions regarding their essays. The authors will be asked to deliver a five-minute lecture based on their essays. The Interview Committee will assess whether the authors wrote the essays.  

Scoring System:

• Essay – 50 points;
• Interview – 30 points;
• Lecture – 20 points.
• To be eligible for a prize, the essay must earn a minimum of 70 points .
• First Prize – $1,000.00;
• Second Prize – $500.00;
• Third Prize – $250.00;
• Special Prize* for the best essay written in Tamil – $250.00.

*A Special Prize for the best essay written in Tamil will be awarded only if that essay is not one of the three other prize-winning essays

The Award: We plan to distribute the prizes and certificates at the Federation of Tamil Sangam of North America’s (FeTNA’s) Annual Convention 2022. We plan to publish the abstracts of the prize-winning essays and the photos of the authors in FeTNA’s Souvenir for the 2022 Annual Convention. The prize-winning essays will be published in Thendral – Mullai, a quarterly publication of the Tamil Sangam of Greater Washington.

3. The essays should be on one of the following topics. All essays must be based on Thirukkural.

• இன்றைய உலகுக்குத் திருக்குறளின் தேவை/The Need for Thirukkural in Today’s World
• திருக்குறளில் மனிதநேயம்/Humanism in Thirukkural
• வள்ளுவர் பார்வையில் நட்பு/Valluvar on Friendship
• வள்ளுவர் பர்வையில் கல்வி/VaLluvar on Education
• ஒழுக்கத்தைப் பற்றிக் குறள் கூறும் கருத்துகள்/ Valluvar on Right Conduct
• உண்மையைப் பற்றி வள்ளுவரின் கருத்துகள்/Valluvar on Truth
• திருக்குறள் எல்லாச்சமூகங்களுக்கும் எக்காலத்துக்கும் பொதுவானதா?/Is Thirukkural applicable for all societies and all times?
• அன்றாட வாழ்வில் திருக்குறள் நெறியை அதிகம் கடைப்பிடிப்பவர்கள் திருக்குறளை அறிந்த தமிழர்களா? திருக்குறளைப் பற்றியே தெரியாத அமெரிக்கர்களா?/ Who, in your opinion, follow the Thirukkural virtues more in their daily life – the Tamils who have read Thirukkural or the Americans who have not heard about Thirukkural?

• திருக்குறளும் அறிவியலும் / Thirukkural and Science

• மனித முயற்சியின் மாண்பை திருவள்ளுவர் எவ்வாறெல்லாம் விளக்குகிறார்?/ How does Thiruvalluvar explain the excellence of human effort?
• திருக்குறளைப் போற்றும் தமிழரல்லாத அறிஞர்களைப் பற்றி எழுதுக/ Write about the non-Tamil scholars who have expressed their appreciation for Thirukkural

கட்டுரை 600 சொற்களுக்கு மேல் அமைய வேண்டும்.

கட்டுரை சிறப்பாக அமைந்திருப்பின் சமர்ப்பிக்கப்பட்ட 24 மணி நேரத்தில் உங்கள் கட்டுரை நமது தளத்திலும் பதிவிடப்படும்.

Guv Ravi announces State-level essay competition: Details inside

The competition aiming to kindle youth responsibility while also encouraging them to become world leaders by 2047 is inviting school students between classes VI and XII to write an essay on the topic ‘My Favourite Freedom Fighter’. While college and university students have been given the topic ‘India by 2047’, stated the press note.

CHENNAI: Commemorating 75 years of India’s Independence, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi announced State-level essay competition in Tamil and English languages for school and college students in Tamil Nadu. Under the topic proposed by the State, students are expected to submit their essays before 6 pm on August 1.

The note further instructed students under both topics to write their essays not more than ten pages in an A4 size paper, with 20 lines per page.

While submitting the essays on or before August 1, students have been requested to ensure details such as name, residential address, class/discipline in which they are studying, address of the educational institution and contact number are mentioned.

At college/university level, first prize winner will be felicitated with Rs 1 lakh, followed by Rs 75,000 for second prize winner and 50,000 for the third.

Meanwhile at school level, the winner for first, second and third prize will be awarded with Rs 75,000, 50,000 and 25,000 respectively.

Those sending Tamil essays must address it to The Director, Central Institute of Classical Tamil, Chemmozhi Salai, Perumbakkam. Subsequently, English essays must be sent to The Vice-Chancellor, The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, Anna Salai,

Two committees headed by R Chandrasekaran, director of Central Institute of Classical Tamil and Sudha Seshayyan, VC, Dr MGR Medical University foresee the evaluation.Guindy.

கட்டுரைக்கு முக்கியம் முன்னுரை, மைய கருத்து, முடிவுரை. இந்த வடிவில் இருந்தால் தான் கட்டுரையானது முழுமை பெறும். படிப்பதற்கும் வசதியாக இருக்கும்.

படிக்கும் வாசகர்களுக்கு முன்னுரையிலே நாம் சொல்ல வந்ததை புரிந்துக்கொள்ளும் அளவிற்கு இருத்தல் வேண்டும். கட்டுரையில் முன்னுரையானது அதிக அளவில் இல்லாமல் சிறிய அளவில் இருத்தலே சிறந்தது.

மையக்கருத்து:

நாம் எழுதும் கட்டுரையில் அதற்கான மையக்கருத்தினை முதல் வரியிலையே வாசகர்களுக்கு தெரியப்படுத்த வேண்டும். அதாவது கட்டுரை இதனை பற்றியது தான் என்று அவர்களுக்கு படித்தவுடனே தெரிந்துக்கொள்ளுமாறு இருக்க வேண்டும்.  நாம் எழுதும் கட்டுரையின் பொருளை விளக்கி கூறும்போது பத்தி பிரித்து எழுத வேண்டும்.

ஒரு பத்தி (பந்தி) எழுதும் போது அதன் கருத்து முழுமையாக இருக்க வேண்டும். ஒரு பத்தி (பந்தி) முழுமையாக நிறைவடைந்த பின் அடுத்த பத்தியில் (பந்தியில்) வேறு கருத்துக்களை எழுத தொடங்க வேண்டும். பத்தி (பந்தி) பிரிக்கும் போது கருத்தின் அடிப்படையிலே பத்தி பிரிய வேண்டும்.

மையக்கருத்தை விளக்கும் இடத்தில் அதற்கான ஆதாரம், சம்பந்தப்பட்ட நிகழ்ச்சிகள் மற்றும் அனுபவங்கள் போன்றவற்றை இணைத்து எழுதி வந்தால் கட்டுரை நயம் நன்றாக இருக்கும்.

கட்டுரை எழுதும் போது நாம் நினைவில் வைத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டியவை:

• கட்டுரை எழுத தொடங்கும் முன் கட்டுரையின் தலைப்பினை படிப்பவர்களுக்கு நன்றாக புரியும் வகையில் விளக்கவும்.
• படிப்பவர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் தெளிவான மொழிநடையில் விளக்க கூடியதாக கட்டுரையை எழுத வேண்டும்.
• கட்டுரையில் எழுத்து பிழைகள் இல்லாமல் எழுத வேண்டும்.
• குறிப்பாக கட்டுரையில் சரியான நிறுத்தல் குறியீடுகள், மேற்கோள் குறிகள் பொருத்தமான இடத்தில் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும்.
• கட்டுரை தலைப்பை நோக்கி ஏன்..? எப்படி..? எதற்கு..? யார்..? என சில கேள்விகளை கேளுங்கள் அதற்கு விடையாக வருவதை கொண்டு சிறந்த கட்டுரையினை எழுத முடியும்.
• நீங்கள் எழுதும் கட்டுரை படிப்பவர்களின் மனதை ஈர்க்கும் வண்ணம் இருக்க வேண்டும். வாசகர்கள் கட்டுரையை ஆர்வமாக படிக்கும் படி எழுத வேண்டும்.

முடிவுரை என்பது கட்டுரையில் நாம் கூறிய மையக்கருத்தை தெளிவாக வலியுறுத்துவதாக இருக்க வேண்டும். அத்துடன் சொல்லப்பட்ட கருத்துக்களை தொகுத்து கூறுவதாக அமைய வேண்டும்.

கட்டுரையின் முடிவுரையை அதிகமாக எழுதுதல் கூடாது. முடிவுரையை நான்கு அல்லது ஐந்து வரிகளுக்குள் எழுதி முடிக்க வேண்டும். அதுவே கட்டுரைக்கு சிறப்பு.

Mahaveer Awards For Essays

The Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation felt the desire and need to acquaint the young people with the Universal Message of Peace & Harmonious co-existence preached by Bhagwan Mahaveer, the 24th Tirthankara, who lived 2600 years ago, and highlight the relevance of the teachings of Bhagwan Mahaveer in the contemporary world. With this objective in mind The Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation instituted the “Mahaveer Award for Essays” in Tamil and English for the students of schools & colleges situated in and around Chennai. This competition was started in 2016 and held every year. The response of students and teachers of schools and colleges is very encouraging. The competitions were not conducted last 2 years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Till now 5 offline Essay competitions and 2 online competitions have been conducted. The Foundation appreciates the active and enthusiastic participation of schools and colleges. The Foundation is very pleased to inform that the 7th Mahaveer Award for Essays competition was conducted online for School students in August 2023. Students from remote districts of Tamil Nadu actively participated in the competition. The Essay competition is conducted by SJNS Jain Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Triplicane, Chennai on behalf of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation.

Levels of students

To provide level playing fields and prevent unequal competition among the students of various age groups, 3 levels are created, namely

Essay competition are conducted in English and Tamil for each level of students. Separate prizes are given language wise.

To encourage participation, the Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation gives cash prizes to the winners of the competition. The winners are honoured by presenting the cheque in a function. The following are the cash prizes for various levels:

Topics for the Competition

Keeping in mind the primary objective of the Essay competition, namely to introduce the young people to the life and teachings of Bhagwan Mahaveer and gradually enhance their interest and understanding and recognise the relevance of His teachings in modern times, the topics are announced.

Topics are decided by eminent Jain scholars. The topic for the 3 levels for First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Mahaveer Award for Essays Competition is given below:

Rules for the competition

• Stationery for the competition is provided by the Foundation.
• Each participant is given a pen and a participation certificate. A booklet on Life and Teachings of Bhagwan Mahaveer is given to all participants.
• There is no limit on the number of participants from each School/ College.
• The participants can write the essay either in English or Tamil. Separate prizes are awarded language wise
• If the number of participants from a single institution exceed 100, a wall clock is gifted as a token of appreciation.
• If the number of participants from a single institution exceed 100, the School/ College is made the Centre and the Competition is conducted in the premises of that School/college.
• If the number of participants from a single institution is less than 100, then the participants come to SJNS Jain MHSS, Triplicane and write the Essay.
• For convenience of participants, a list of suggested books and links to various websites are provided for reference.
• (1) The Competition will have 50 MCQs.
• (2) Duration for the competition – 60 minutes.
• (3) The medium of competition will be English or Tamil. Separate prizes are awarded language wise.
• (4) Reference booklets are provided by the Foundation.
• (5) The student gets +2 marks for correct answer, -1 (Minus 1) for wrong answer, 0 marks if question is skipped.
• (6) Last Date for the Competition – 30/12/2022.
• (7) No Registration Fee.
• (8) If the number of participants from a single institution exceed 100, a wall clock is gifted as a token of appreciation.
• (9) All participants will get an E-Participation certificate.
• (10) If more than one student gets the highest mark, the student who has completed test in lesser time will be declared as winner. The decision of the Jury will be final and binding.

2024 global essay prize, registrations are now open all essayists must register  here  before friday 31 may, 2024.

The John Locke Institute encourages young people to cultivate the characteristics that turn good students into great writers: independent thought, depth of knowledge, clear reasoning, critical analysis and persuasive style. Our Essay Competition invites students to explore a wide range of challenging and interesting questions beyond the confines of the school curriculum.

Entering an essay in our competition can build knowledge, and refine skills of argumentation. It also gives students the chance to have their work assessed by experts. All of our essay prizes are judged by a panel of senior academics drawn from leading universities including Oxford and Princeton, under the leadership of the Chairman of Examiners, former Cambridge philosopher, Dr Jamie Whyte.

The judges will choose their favourite essay from each of seven subject categories - Philosophy, Politics, Economics, History, Psychology, Theology and Law - and then select the winner of the Grand Prize for the best entry in any subject. There is also a separate prize awarded for the best essay in the junior category, for under 15s.

In the original version of this question we misstated a statistic. This was caused by reproducing an error that appeared in several media summaries of the study. We are grateful to one of our contestants, Xinyi Zhang, who helped us to see (with humility and courtesy) why we should take more care to check our sources. We corrected the text on 4 April. Happily, the correction does not in any way alter the thrust of the question.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS & FURTHER DETAILS

Please read the following carefully.

Entry to the John Locke Institute Essay Competition 2024 is open to students from any country.

Registration  

Only candidates who registered before the registration deadline of Friday, 31 May 2024 may enter this year's competition. To register, click here .  

All entries must be submitted by 11.59 pm BST on  the submission deadline: Sunday, 30 June 2024 .  Candidates must be eighteen years old, or younger, on that date. (Candidates for the Junior Prize must be fourteen years old, or younger, on that date.)

Entry is free.

Each essay must address only one of the questions in your chosen subject category, and must not exceed 2000 words (not counting diagrams, tables of data, endnotes, bibliography or authorship declaration). 

The filename of your pdf must be in this format: FirstName-LastName-Category-QuestionNumber.pdf; so, for instance, Alexander Popham would submit his answer to question 2 in the Psychology category with the following file name:

Alexander-Popham-Psychology-2.pdf

Essays with filenames which are not in this format will be rejected.

The candidate's name should NOT appear within the document itself. 

Candidates should NOT add footnotes. They may, however, add endnotes and/or a Bibliography that is clearly titled as such.

Each candidate will be required to provide the email address of an academic referee who is familiar with the candidate's written academic work. This should be a school teacher, if possible, or another responsible adult who is not a relation of the candidate. The John Locke Institute will email referees to verify that the essays submitted are indeed the original work of the candidates.

Submissions may be made as soon as registration opens in April. We recommend that you submit your essay well in advance of th e deadline to avoid any last-minute complications.

Acceptance of your essay depends on your granting us permission to use your data for the purposes of receiving and processing your entry as well as communicating with you about the Awards Ceremony Dinner, the academic conference, and other events and programmes of the John Locke Institute and its associated entities.  

Late entries

If for any reason you miss the 30 June deadline you will have an opportunity to make a late entry, under two conditions:

a) A late entry fee of 20.00 USD must be paid by credit card within twenty-four hours of the original deadline; and

b) Your essay must be submitted  before 11.59 pm BST on Wednesday, 10 July 2024.

To pay for late entry, a registrant need only log into his or her account, select the relevant option and provide the requested payment information.

Our grading system is proprietary. Essayists may be asked to discuss their entry with a member of the John Locke Institute’s faculty. We use various means to identify plagiarism, contract cheating, the use of AI and other forms of fraud . Our determinations in all such matters are final.

Essays will be judged on knowledge and understanding of the relevant material, the competent use of evidence, quality of argumentation, originality, structure, writing style and persuasive force. The very best essays are likely to be those which would be capable of changing somebody's mind. Essays which ignore or fail to address the strongest objections and counter-arguments are unlikely to be successful .

Candidates are advised to answer the question as precisely and directly as possible.

The writers of the best essays will receive a commendation and be shortlisted for a prize. Writers of shortlisted essays will be notified by 11.59 pm BST on Wednesday, 31 July. They will also be invited to London for an invitation-only academic conference and awards dinner in September, where the prize-winners will be announced. Unlike the competition itself, the academic conference and awards dinner are not free. Please be aware that n obody is required to attend either the academic conference or the prize ceremony. You can win a prize without travelling to London.

All short-listed candidates, including prize-winners, will be able to download eCertificates that acknowledge their achievement. If you win First, Second or Third Prize, and you travel to London for the ceremony, you will receive a signed certificate. 

There is a prize for the best essay in each category. The prize for each winner of a subject category, and the winner of the Junior category, is a scholarship worth US$2000 towards the cost of attending any John Locke Institute programme, and the essays will be published on the Institute's website. Prize-giving ceremonies will take place in London, at which winners and runners-up will be able to meet some of the judges and other faculty members of the John Locke Institute. Family, friends, and teachers are also welcome.

The candidate who submits the best essay overall will be awarded an honorary John Locke Institute Junior Fellowship, which comes with a US$10,000 scholarship to attend one or more of our summer schools and/or visiting scholars programmes. 

The judges' decisions are final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

Q. I missed the registration deadline. May I still register or submit an essay?

A. No. Only candidates who registered before 31 May will be able to submit an essay. 

Q. Are footnote s, endnotes, a bibliography or references counted towards the word limit?

A. No. Only the body of the essay is counted. 

Q. Are in-text citations counted towards the word limit? ​

A. If you are using an in-text based referencing format, such as APA, your in-text citations are included in the word limit.

Q. Is it necessary to include foo tnotes or endnotes in an essay? ​

A. You  may not  include footnotes, but you may include in-text citations or endnotes. You should give your sources of any factual claims you make, and you should ackn owledge any other authors on whom you rely.​

Q. I am interested in a question that seems ambiguous. How should I interpret it?

A. You may interpret a question as you deem appropriate, clarifying your interpretation if necessary. Having done so, you must answer the question as directly as possible.

Q. How strict are  the age eligibility criteria?

A. Only students whose nineteenth birthday falls after 30 June 2024 will be eligible for a prize or a commendation. In the case of the Junior category, only students whose fifteenth birthday falls after 30 June 2024 will be eligible for a prize or a commendation. 

Q. May I submit more than one essay?

A. Yes, you may submit as many essays as you please in any or all categories.

Q. If I am eligible to compete in the Junior category, may I also (or instead) compete in another category?

A. Yes, you may.

Q. May I team up with someone else to write an essay?  

A. No. Each submitted essay must be entirely the work of a single individual.

Q. May I use AI, such as ChatGPT or the like, in writing my essay?

A. All essays will be checked for the use of AI. If we find that any content is generated by AI, your essay will be disqualified. We will also ask you, upon submission of your essay, whether you used AI for  any  purpose related to the writing of your essay, and if so, you will be required to provide details. In that case, if, in our judgement, you have not provided full and accurate details of your use of AI, your essay will be disqualified. 

Since any use of AI (that does not result in disqualification) can only negatively affect our assessment of your work relative to that of work that is done without using AI, your safest course of action is simply not to use it at all. If, however, you choose to use it for any purpose, we reserve the right to make relevant judgements on a case-by-case basis and we will not enter into any correspondence. 

Q. May I have someone else edit, or otherwise help me with, my essay?

A. You may of course discuss your essay with others, and it is perfectly acceptable for them to offer general advice and point out errors or weaknesses in your writing or content, leaving you to address them.

However, no part of your essay may be written by anyone else. This means that you must edit your own work and that while a proofreader may point out errors, you as the essayist must be the one to correct them. 

Q. Do I have to attend the awards ceremony to win a prize? ​

A. Nobody is required to attend the prize ceremony. You can win a prize without travelling to London. But if we invite you to London it is because your essay was good enough - in the opinion of the First Round judges - to be at least a contender for First, Second or Third Prize. Normally the Second Round judges will agree that the short-listed essays are worth at least a commendation.

Q. Is there an entry fee?

A. No. There is no charge to enter our global essay competition unless you submit your essay after the normal deadline, in which case there is a fee of 20.00 USD .

Q. Can I receive a certificate for my participation in your essay competition if I wasn't shortlisted? 

A. No. Certificates are awarded only for shortlisted essays. Short-listed contestants who attend the award ceremony in London will receive a paper certificate. If you cannot travel to London, you will be able to download your eCertificate.

Q. Can I receive feedba ck on my essay? 

A. We would love to be able to give individual feedback on essays but, unfortunately, we receive too many entries to be able to comment on particular essays.

Q. The deadline for publishing the names of short-listed essayists has passed but I did not receive an email to tell me whether I was short-listed.

A. Log into your account and check "Shortlist Status" for (each of) your essay(s).

Q. Why isn't the awards ceremony in Oxford this year?

A. Last year, many shortlisted finalists who applied to join our invitation-only academic conference missed the opportunity because of capacity constraints at Oxford's largest venues. This year, the conference will be held in central London and the gala awards dinner will take place in an iconic London ballroom. 

TECHNICAL FAQ s

Q. The system will not accept my essay. I have checked the filename and it has the correct format. What should I do?  

A. You have almost certainly added a space before or after one of your names in your profile. Edit it accordingly and try to submit again.

Q. The profile page shows my birth date to be wrong by a day, even after I edit it. What should I do?

A. Ignore it. The date that you typed has been correctly input to our database. ​ ​

Q. How can I be sure that my registration for the essay competition was successful? Will I receive a confirmation email?

A. You will not receive a confirmation email. Rather, you can at any time log in to the account that you created and see that your registration details are present and correct.

TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR SUBMISSION

If you are unable to submit your essay to the John Locke Institute’s global essay competition, your problem is almost certainly one of the following.

If so, please proceed as indicated.

1) PROBLEM: I receive the ‘registrations are now closed’ message when I enter my email and verification code. SOLUTION. You did not register for the essay competition and create your account. If you think you did, you probably only provided us with your email to receive updates from us about the competition or otherwise. You may not enter the competition this year.

2) PROBLEM I do not receive a login code after I enter my email to enter my account. SOLUTION. Enter your email address again, checking that you do so correctly. If this fails, restart your browser using an incognito window; clear your cache, and try again. Wait for a few minutes for the code. If this still fails, restart your machine and try one more time. If this still fails, send an email to [email protected] with “No verification code – [your name]” in the subject line.

SUBMITTING AN ESSAY

3) PROBLEM: The filename of my essay is in the correct format but it is rejected. SOLUTION: Use “Edit Profile” to check that you did not add a space before or after either of your names. If you did, delete it. Whether you did or did not, try again to submit your essay. If submission fails again, email [email protected] with “Filename format – [your name]” in the subject line.

4) PROBLEM: When trying to view my submitted essay, a .txt file is downloaded – not the .pdf file that I submitted. SOLUTION: Delete the essay. Logout of your account; log back in, and resubmit. If resubmission fails, email [email protected] with “File extension problem – [your name]” in the subject line.

5) PROBLEM: When I try to submit, the submission form just reloads without giving me an error message. SOLUTION. Log out of your account. Open a new browser; clear the cache; log back in, and resubmit. If resubmission fails, email [email protected] with “Submission form problem – [your name]” in the subject line.

6) PROBLEM: I receive an “Unexpected Error” when trying to submit. SOLUTION. Logout of your account; log back in, and resubmit. If this resubmission fails, email [email protected] with “Unexpected error – [your name]” in thesubject line. Your email must tell us e xactly where in the submission process you received this error.

7) PROBLEM: I have a problem with submitting and it is not addressed above on this list. SOLUTION: Restart your machine. Clear your browser’s cache. Try to submit again. If this fails, email [email protected] with “Unlisted problem – [your name]” in the subject line. Your email must tell us exactly the nature of your problem with relevant screen caps.

READ THIS BEFORE YOU EMAIL US.

Do not email us before you have tried the specified solutions to your problem.

Do not email us more than once about a single problem. We will respond to your email within 72 hours. Only if you have not heard from us in that time may you contact us again to ask for an update.

If you email us regarding a problem, you must include relevant screen-shots and information on both your operating system and your browser. You must also declare that you have tried the solutions presented above and had a good connection to the internet when you did so.

If you have tried the relevant solution to your problem outlined above, have emailed us, and are still unable to submit before the 30 June deadline on account of any fault of the John Locke Institute or our systems, please do not worry: we will have a way to accept your essay in that case. However, if there is no fault on our side, we will not accept your essay if it is not submitted on time – whatever your reason: we will not make exceptions for IT issues for which we are not responsible.

We reserve the right to disqualify the entries of essayists who do not follow all provided instructions, including those concerning technical matters.

பாரதியார் என்று அழைக்கப்படும் சுப்ரமணிய பாரதி, 19 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டின் பிற்பகுதியிலும் 20 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டின் முற்பகுதியிலும் இந்தியாவில் வாழ்ந்த ஒரு தமிழ் கவிஞர், எழுத்தாளர் மற்றும் பத்திரிகையாளர் ஆவார். இவர் தமிழ் மொழியின் மிகச்சிறந்த கவிஞர்களில் ஒருவராக பரவலாகக் கருதப்படுகிறார், மேலும் இவர் பெரும்பாலும் “மகாகவி பாரதி” என்று குறிப்பிடப்படுகிறார், அதாவது “பாரதி மாபெரும் கவிஞர்”.

பாரதியார் தனது கவிதைகளுக்கு மேலதிகமாக, கட்டுரைகளை எழுதுவதில் ஒரு சிறந்த எழுத்தாளராக இருந்தார், மேலும் இவர் தனது சமூக மற்றும் அரசியல் பார்வைகளை மேலும் மேம்படுத்துவதற்கு இந்த பகுதிகளைப் பயன்படுத்தினார். இவர் பெண்களின் உரிமைகளுக்காக ஆரம்பகால வழக்கறிஞராக இருந்தார், மேலும் பெண்களின் கல்வி பிரச்சினையை உரையாற்றிய இந்தியாவின் முதல் எழுத்தாளர்களில் இவரும் ஒருவர். இந்த தலைப்பில் இவரது படைப்புகள் பெண்களுக்கு கல்வியின் முக்கியத்துவம் பற்றிய விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்த உதவியது, மேலும் இந்த பகுதியில் எதிர்கால முன்னேற்றத்திற்கு அடித்தளம் அமைக்க உதவியது.

இவரது இலக்கிய வெற்றி இருந்தபோதிலும், பாரதியின் அரசியல் பார்வைகள் மற்றும் செயல்பாடுகள் இவரது பிரிட்டிஷ் காலனித்துவ அதிகாரிகளின் இலக்காக ஆக்கியது, மேலும் இவர் 1908 இல் இந்தியாவை விட்டு வெளியேற வேண்டிய கட்டாயம் ஏற்பட்டது. இவர் இலங்கை உட்பட பல்வேறு இடங்களில் வாழ்ந்து, இறுதியாக பாண்டிச்சேரியில் குடியேறினார்.

பாரதியார் திருமண வாழ்க்கை

  பாரதியார் என்று அழைக்கப்படும் சுப்ரமணிய பாரதி, விசாலாக்ஷி என்று அழைக்கப்படும் செல்லம்மாளை மணந்தார். இவர்களின் திருமணத்தின் சரியான தேதி தெரியவில்லை, ஆனால் இது 1900 களின் முற்பகுதியில் நடந்ததாக நம்பப்படுகிறது. செல்லம்மாள் ஒரு பணக்கார வணிகரின் மகள், பாரதியார் ஒரு கவிஞரும் எழுத்தாளரும் ஆவார், இவர் திருமணத்தின் போது பொருளாதார ரீதியாக சிரமப்பட்டார். கருத்து வேறுபாடுகள் இருந்தபோதிலும், தம்பதியினருக்கு இடையே வலுவான பிணைப்பு இருந்தது, மேலும் செல்லம்மாள் பாரதியாருக்கு இவரது வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் ஆதரவாக இருந்தார்.

தமிழுக்குப் பங்களித்த பலருக்கு மத்தியில் பாரதியார் தனக்கென ஒரு தனி இடத்தை உருவாக்கிக் கொண்டவர். பெண்ணியம் போற்றும் மதிநுட்பத்தை அறத்தோடும் அடக்கத்தோடும் வளர்த்து, “பாடலின் மூலம் இந்த அறம் ஊட்டப்பட வேண்டும்” என்று உற்சாகத்துடன் பாடினார் மகாகவி பாரதியார்.

நிமிர்ந்த நடையும், முறுக்கு மீசையும், நிமிர்ந்த பார்வையும், எளிமையான தோற்றமும் கொண்ட பாரதியார், காலங்காலமாக கவிதையின் பாரம்பரிய பாணியை மாற்றி, புதிய கவிதைகளை பிறப்பித்த பாரதியார்.

பழங்கால மூடநம்பிக்கைகள், சாதிய ஒடுக்குமுறைகள், பெண்களுக்கு எதிரான வன்முறைகள் மற்றும் தீண்டாமைக்கு எதிராகக் கிளர்ந்தெழுந்த பாரதி, ஒடுக்குமுறை அமைப்புகளைத் தன் வார்த்தைகளால் உடைத்தார். எளிய கவிதைகளால் படிக்காத பாமர மக்களுக்கு நல்ல வார்த்தைகளை கொண்டு சென்ற கவிஞர் பாரதியார்.

பாரதியாரின் தமிழ்ப்பற்று

பாரதியார் பல இலக்கியங்களைக் கற்று அதைத் தழுவி பல அழகான கவிதைகளை நமக்குத் தந்தார். ஒளி நடையும், இலக்கிய நேர்த்தியும், பொருள் செறிவும் கொண்ட புதிய கவிதைகள் படித்துள்ளார். தமிழ் இலக்கிய வரலாற்றில் தமிழுக்கு புதிய புதிய கவிதைகளை அறிமுகப்படுத்திய பெருமை பாரதியையே சாரும்.

எட்டயபுர நீதிமன்றத்தில் அரசவைக் கவிஞராகப் பணிபுரிந்து பல கவிதைகளை இயற்றினார் மற்றும் பகவத் கீதையை தமிழில் மொழிபெயர்துள்ளார். இவரது எழுத்துக்கள் முதன்முதலில் 1903 இல் வெளியிடப்பட்டன.

தமிழாசிரியராகப் மதுரை சேதுபதி பள்ளியில் பணியாற்றினார். பின்னாளில், சுதந்திரப் போராட்டத்தில் துடித்த பாரதி, அடிமைகளாக இருந்த பழங்குடி மக்களைத் தன் எழுத்துக்களால் மூலமாக கவர்ந்தார்.

ஆங்கிலேயர் ஆட்சியில் இருந்து இந்திய விடுதலைக்கான காரணத்திற்காக பாரதி ஆழ்ந்த ஈடுபாடு கொண்டிருந்தார் மற்றும் இவரது அரசியல் கருத்துக்களை வெளிப்படுத்த இவரது எழுத்தைப் பயன்படுத்தினார். இவர் தேசியவாதம், ஜனநாயகம் மற்றும் சமத்துவத்தின் வலுவான வக்கீலாக இருந்தார்.

பாரதியாரின் பெண் விடுதலை

பாரதி வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில் ஆணாதிக்கம் தலைவிரித்தாடியது பெண் அடக்குமுறை அதிகமாக இருந்தது. பெண்கள் கல்வி கற்கக் கூடாது, ஆண்களுக்கு இணையாக பணியாற்றக் கூடாது. குழந்தைத் திருமணக் கொடுமைகளுக்கு எதிராகக் குரல் எழுப்பினார் பாரதி

“ஏட்டையும் பெண்கள் தொடுவது தீமையென்

றெண்ணி யிருந்தவர் மாய்ந்துவிட்டார்

வீட்டுக்குள்ளே பெண்ணைப் பூட்டிவைப்போமென்ற

விந்தை மனிதர் தலைகவிழ்ந்தார்”

என்று பெண்கள் விடுதலை கும்மி எனும் கவிதையில் பாடினார்.

பெண்கள் சுதந்திரமாக வாழ வேண்டும், கல்வி கற்க வேண்டும், ஆண்களுக்கு இணையாக பணிபுரிய வேண்டும், விரும்பியவரை திருமணம் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தை சமூகத்தில் கூறியுள்ளார்.

“மாதர் தம்மை இழிவு செய்யும் மடைமை தன்னை கொழுத்துவோம்” என்று பாடியவர் பாரதி.இது போன்ற பாடல்கள் பெண் சுதந்திரத்திற்கும் விதையாக அமைந்தது. பாரதி கண்ட புதுமை பெண்கள் இன்று தலைநிமிர்ந்து வாழ்வதற்கு  பாரதி அன்று போராடினர்.

• தமிழ் இலக்கியம் மற்றும் கலாச்சாரத்தில் நீடித்த தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்திய ஒரு தொலைநோக்கு கவிஞர் மற்றும் எழுத்தாளர் ஆவார். இவரது படைப்புகள் தமிழ் மொழியின் சிறந்த கவிதைகளில் சிலவாக பரவலாகக் கருதப்படுகின்றன, மேலும் அவை உலகெங்கிலும் உள்ள மில்லியன் கணக்கான மக்களால் தொடர்ந்து வாசிக்கப்பட்டு போற்றப்படுகின்றன.
• பாரதியின் உடல்நிலை 1916 இல் மோசமடைந்தது, இவர் செப்டம்பர் 11, 1921 அன்று தனது 38 வயதில் இறந்தார். இவர் இந்தியாவின் தலைசிறந்த கவிஞர்களில் ஒருவராகவும் உண்மையான தேசிய வீரராகவும் நினைவுகூரப்படுகிறார்.  இவர் தனது எழுத்து மூலம் இந்திய சுதந்திர இயக்கத்தில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தினார். பாரதியின் மரபு இந்தியாவிலும் உலகெங்கிலும் உள்ள மில்லியன் கணக்கான மக்களுக்கு தொடர்ந்து ஊக்கமளிக்கிறது.
• இவரது படைப்புகள் இன்றும் பரவலாக வாசிக்கப்பட்டு படிக்கப்படுகின்றன, மேலும் சமூக நீதி, சமத்துவம் மற்றும் ஒடுக்கப்பட்டவர்களின் உரிமைகளுக்கான இவரது அர்ப்பணிப்பு பலருக்கு உத்வேகமாக உள்ளது. இந்தியாவின் தலைசிறந்த இலக்கியவாதிகளில் ஒருவராகவும் உண்மையான தேசிய வீரராகவும் இவர் எப்போதும் நினைவுகூரப்படுவார்.
• பாரதியாரின் வாழ்க்கையும் பணியும் மாற்றத்தைத் தூண்டுவதற்கும் சுதந்திரம், சமத்துவம் மற்றும் நீதி ஆகிய இலட்சியங்களை மேம்படுத்துவதற்கும் வார்த்தைகளின் சக்திக்கு சான்றாக நிற்கிறது. சுதந்திரம் மற்றும் சமூக நீதிக்கான இவரது அர்ப்பணிப்பு, அத்துடன் இவரது பாடல் அழகு மற்றும் உணர்ச்சித் தீவிரம் ஆகியவை அவரை தமிழ் இலக்கிய வரலாற்றில் மிகவும் மதிக்கப்படும் நபர்களில் ஒருவராக ஆக்கியுள்ளன. இவர் இந்திய வரலாற்றில் ஒரு முக்கிய நபராகவும், தமிழ் மக்களுக்கு பெருமை மற்றும் உத்வேகத்தின் ஆதாரமாகவும் உள்ளார்.
