Pharmacy: Advocacy, Integrity, and Respect Essay

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writer’s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

A professional is someone that must adhere to the highest standards of his profession. A high-level of professionalism does not only ensure quality output but also safety in the workplace and the sustainability of the operation because the professional will not do anything that would put the firm in a compromising position and negatively affect the reputation of his co-workers and even his or her employers.

The same applies to a pharmacist who works in an environment where he or she has access to drugs and other medical paraphernalia that can be used to help people or harm their health. A pharmacist must be mindful of three core values: advocacy, integrity, and respect.

A pharmacist must have an advocacy. A pharmacist is not another professional working behind a counter and dispensing drugs to customers. A pharmacist must believe in something and use that belief as inspiration for his or her actions. The pharmacist’s advocacy can be a guiding light that would enable the pharmacist to appreciate his or her role in this world beyond the repetitive aspect of the job.

In his or her spare time it is this advocacy that would guide in choosing the activities that can help promote responsibility among consumers. One of which is the advocacy to help people understand that it is wrong to abuse prescription medication and to exploit any loopholes in the system to abuse drugs that can be bought over the counter.

A pharmacist must have integrity in order to make the correct decision in times when he or she is in an ethical dilemma. Consider for instance if a relative approaches a pharmacist in order to buy a particular drug that requires prescription and yet this particular relative would like to buy this drug without any prescription in hand.

A pharmacist that does not have integrity would easily give in and sell the drugs to a relative or a friend.

More importantly, integrity is needed in this profession because a pharmacist is knowledgeable about some of the most intimate details of people. Just one look at the prescription medication the pharmacist already has an idea about the illness of the person and in this is the type of information that must be safeguarded in order to protect the privacy of the customers.

Respect is the final attribute that a successful pharmacist should possess. Respect means that a pharmacist does not only see people as mere customers – a means to earn a living. A pharmacist must look at customers as human beings that may or may not be in a personal crisis.

Consider for instance the woman who is buying medication to treat his son’s illness or the man who comes in to buy medicine for a cancer that is in remission. Thus, the people who comes to buy medicine has to be treated with respect, the pharmacist must be sensitive to what he says or do not knowing the kind of pain and suffering that a customer may have been going through at that time.

Advocacy, integrity, and respect are some of the major qualities that a professional must possess. When it comes to a pharmacist these three core values are indispensable. These core values can become a major part of a moral compass that would not only ensure success for the pharmacist but also guide him or her to stay in the right path.

These three core values enable a pharmacist to serve others while maintaining an environment that is safe and yet readily accessible for people needing help in perhaps the most difficult times of their lives.

Just follow these four steps!

🧠 Step 1: Brainstorm

You may not have 100% confidence in your future career, as you never know what your future may hold. But you can test yourself by just asking a few crucial questions. They will help you make a final decision about the career of your dreams.

Why exactly do you want to be a pharmacist? Ask yourself these questions to understand:

  • What exactly attracts you to the pharmacy?
  • When was the first time you became interested in it?
  • Is there someone who inspired you or influenced your decision? In what way?
  • What do you want to achieve throughout your career?
  • Have you already done something to bring you closer to a career in pharmacy? Have you read a book on pharmacy or visited some medical conference?
  • What will you learn and do in college that will help you prepare for this career?
  • Which of these questions was the easiest or most challenging to answer?

📌 Step 2: State Your Point

A strong main point is essential for your “Why I Want to Be a Pharmacist” essay. What you have to do is clearly and concisely communicate to your readers what you’re going to tell them.

Here is an example of a start to a successful “why pharmacy’ essay.

I’ve never asked myself the question, “Is a pharmacist a good career?” I simply knew that I would pursue it someday when I grew up. So, here I am, feeling completely ready to start learning and practicing to become a highly qualified pharmacist.

What will be the main point of the essay you’re going to wow your professor with?

🏗️ Step 3: Build Your Story

Include the details that support your central idea from the heart of your story. Don’t forget to use vivid examples to bring your main ideas to life. To make your essay one of a kind, choose your words and expressions with care.

Make sure you build up your essay correctly, as you see in the following example:

The focus of the essay:

My dream is to become a pharmacist. This job will be a great opportunity for me to combine my love for medicine with my passion for making others healthier and happier.

The details:

Pharmacy is the field I’ve always been most interested in. This year I’m going to take a pharmacy class, and I have prepared myself well for it. I’ve read two amazing books on this topic, from time to time I visit pharmacy conferences in my town, and I’ve also subscribed to the Medicine Channel. All of these activities have already assisted me in acquiring some knowledge in this sphere. With this foundation and background information, I am sure that I want to devote my life to this.

🚧 Step 4: End Your Essay Strong

At this final stage, restate and put a new face on the main point you’ve already covered. Summarize what you’ve elaborate on in your pharmacy essay and give some kind of closure. Also, try to leave your readers with some exciting ideas to think about.

Being a pharmacist, like my mother, and giving a helping hand to people who need it the most, is a very respectful and honorable mission. I know that it requires a lot of responsibility, but it will pay off people’s gratitude. Going to college will make my dream come true and assist me in reaching my lifelong goal.

As soon as you’ve finished your essay, put down your draft for a day or two. Look at it with fresh eyes to see what needs to be changed, added, or deleted. If you follow these recommendations, your “Why I Want to Be a Pharmacist” essay will succeed!

Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Acceptance Rates

Want to study at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences? Here’s what you need to know to apply and get started.

The acceptance rate at MCPHS is about 88%, meaning that a large percentage of people who apply are accepted. But what exactly goes into making this percentage so high? And how does the school determine who gets in and who is asked to apply again the following year?

Let’s look at why the MCPHS acceptance rate is so high and how students are accepted.

Why Is MCPHS’ Acceptance Rate So High?

MCPHS prides itself on its high acceptance rate, allowing potential students to study at one of the top health science schools in Boston. It’s important to note that while a high acceptance rate may indicate that our university—and other universities that have high acceptance rates—are more accessible to prospective students, it doesn’t reflect the quality of education or the competitiveness of the programs. Applicants should always carefully consider their own academic and career goals when evaluating the colleges and programs they’re thinking about attending, regardless of acceptance rates.

The acceptance rate can be influenced by several factors, including:

Specialized Focus

MCPHS specializes in health sciences education, offering programs in areas such as pharmacy, healthcare administration, nursing, and optometry. While these fields are in high demand, students who aren’t entering a niche field may be more likely to apply to more general programs offered by other universities, which could contribute to a higher acceptance rate.

Admissions Criteria

Our university maintains high academic standards, and we desire as many people as possible to study the areas of the medical field they’re most interested in. That said, our admissions criteria are more accessible compared to other highly competitive colleges that don’t allow as many students to attend. This can result in a higher acceptance rate, particularly for students who meet the requirements.

Program Offerings

MCPHS offers a range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs  in the health science field, allowing students to pursue their interests and career goals in specialized fields. The variety of programs available attracts a large, diverse pool of applicants, contributing to a higher acceptance rate.

Application Pool

The number of applications received by MCPHS relative to the number of spots available in each program can also influence our acceptance rate. If we receive a lower number of applications compared to our capacity, that can make the acceptance rate higher.

Marketing and Recruitment Efforts

Our marketing and recruitment efforts play a role in attracting prospective students. Effective outreach strategies can help us raise awareness of the university and its programs, potentially increasing the number of applications received.

Transfer and International Student Population

MCPHS has a large transfer and international student population, which can impact the overall acceptance rate. Transfer students and international students may have different application requirements or admission pathways compared to first-year applicants. However, we make it easier for prospective international students to gain admission compared to some other United States colleges.

Why Study at MCPHS?

Because our acceptance rate enables more students to attend, those who do will benefit from the following advantages:

Specialized Programs

MCPHS offers a wide range of programs in health sciences, including pharmacy, nursing, physician assistant studies, and dental hygiene. Students interested in pursuing a healthcare career can find programs tailored to their specific, niche interests and career goals.

Strong Reputation

We have a strong reputation in the medical industry, providing students with hands-on training from experienced staff and professors . MCPHS is known for its rigorous academic programs, state-of-the-art facilities, and commitment to preparing students for successful healthcare careers.

Clinical Experience

Many programs at MCPHS incorporate clinical experiences, internships, and experiential learning opportunities. This practical training allows students to apply their knowledge in real-world healthcare settings  and gain valuable skills and experiences.

The university has multiple campuses located in popular urban areas such as Boston, Worcester, and Manchester. These locations offer access to world-renowned healthcare facilities, research institutions , and cultural attractions, providing students with unique learning opportunities and networking connections.

Here are a few MCPHS education statistics and college rankings that you should know:

  • The annual tuition cost for undergraduate bachelor's degree programs is $37,620. The annual tuition of three-year accelerated bachelor's degree programs is $54,480.
  • 90% of MCPHS students receive financial aid, giving them the option to get financial help with their costs.
  • The median salary for graduates of MCPHS is $124,000, ranking second in New England and sixth in the nation for median salary.
  • MCPHS is ranked #3 in the country for median earnings via Georgetown CEW.

The Admissions Process

Are you interested in starting the application process for MCPHS? For first-year, non-transfer students, these are the application requirements:

  • Fill out the Common Application or MCPHS internal application.
  • November 1 — Early Action Round I Admission Notification: Mid-December
  • December 1 — Early Action Round II Admission Notification: Mid-January

The Crucial Role of Pharmacy Technicians: Navigating a High-Demand Career Path in Healthcare

June 25, 2024

essay topic for pharmacy

Pharmacy technicians are crucial in the healthcare industry, providing vital support to pharmacists. This profession offers a rewarding career with a clear path for growth and advancement, particularly for those aspiring to become pharmacists. We’ll explore the career trajectory of a pharmacy technician, the opportunities for advancement, and the future outlook for those choosing this path.

What Does a Pharmacy Technician Do?

Pharmacy technicians are healthcare professionals who assist pharmacists in dispensing prescription medications to customers or health professionals. Their duties include:

  • Preparing and dispensing medications : Ensuring accurate medication distribution.
  • Managing inventory : Keeping track of medication stock and supplies.
  • Interacting with customers : Answering questions and providing guidance on medication usage.
  • Processing insurance claims : Handling billing and insurance verification.
  • Maintaining records : Keeping detailed records of medication and patient information.

Pharmacy technicians work in various settings, including retail pharmacies, hospitals, and long-term care facilities, offering a dynamic and engaging work environment.

How to Become a Pharmacy Technician

Step 1: education and training.

To become a pharmacy technician, one typically needs a high school diploma or GED. Following this, aspiring technicians can pursue formal training through accredited pharmacy technician programs available at community colleges, vocational schools, or online. These programs usually take between 6 months to 2 years to complete and cover topics such as pharmacology, pharmacy law and ethics, medication dosage, and customer service.

Step 2: Certification and Licensing

While requirements vary by state, most require pharmacy technicians to be certified. Georgia Southern University’s Division of Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) offers an immersive Pharmacy Technician course that will prepare individuals for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE®) to obtain the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB®). Obtaining certification can significantly enhance job prospects and career advancement opportunities.

Step 3: Gaining Experience

Hands-on experience is crucial for pharmacy technicians. Many training programs include externships or internships, providing valuable on-the-job experience. Entry-level positions often offer opportunities to learn and grow within the field.

Career Advancement Opportunities

Specialization and advanced roles.

With experience and additional training, pharmacy technicians can specialize in areas such as:

  • Compounding : Preparing customized medications for patients with specific needs.
  • IV therapy : Handling intravenous medications in hospital settings.
  • Nuclear Pharmacy : Working with radioactive materials for medical imaging and treatments.

Transitioning to a Pharmacist Role

For those looking to advance their careers further, becoming a pharmacist is a natural progression. Pharmacy technicians gain practical experience and a deep understanding of pharmacy operations, providing a strong foundation for pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. This typically involves:

  • Completing Pre-Pharmacy Coursework : Courses in biology, chemistry, and mathematics.
  • Earning a Pharm.D. Degree : A 4-year professional program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).
  • Licensure : Passing the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and any state-specific exams.

The Future Outlook for Pharmacy Technicians

The demand for pharmacy technicians is expected to grow significantly, driven by an aging population, increasing chronic disease prevalence, and the expanding role of pharmacists in healthcare. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of pharmacy technicians is projected to grow 4% from 2021 to 2031, adding about 16,600 new jobs annually.

As healthcare evolves, pharmacy technicians will be crucial in ensuring safe and effective medication use. Technological advancements and increased responsibilities in medication therapy management and immunizations will further expand career opportunities.

Becoming a pharmacy technician is a fulfilling career and an excellent stepping stone for those interested in pursuing a pharmacist career. With the healthcare industry’s growing demand for skilled professionals, pharmacy technicians can look forward to a bright and promising future. Whether just starting your career journey or seeking advancement, the pharmacy technician role offers a pathway to success and professional growth.

Kenry receives junior faculty enhancement award

Dr. Kenry

Kenry, PhD , an assistant professor at the University of Arizona R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy , received the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities .

“I am truly honored and humbled to be selected as a recipient of this year’s award,” said Kenry, who goes by one name. “For a new principal investigator like me, receiving this award is extremely encouraging, as it shows the importance of the work my team is doing. It also reaffirms my group’s commitment to leveraging our technical skills and expertise to address some of the unmet needs in ovarian cancer diagnosis to ultimately improve patient outcomes.”

Kenry joined the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in June 2023 after completing his postdoctoral work at Harvard University.

According to its website, ORAU provides innovative scientific and technical solutions for the U.S. Department of Energy and other federal agencies to advance national priorities in science, health and education. The organization does this through its specialized teams of experts and a consortium of more than 150 major colleges and universities. The Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards program provides funds to enrich the research and professional growth of young faculty.

“We have a strong track record of providing a supportive environment to accelerate the professional growth of our junior faculty members,” said Xinxin Ding, PhD , a professor and head of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. “Kenry is the newest addition to our team, and, as a department head, I am tremendously proud of his team’s accomplishments. His track record in cutting-edge cancer research, innovative projects, motivation to improve ovarian cancer diagnosis and strong institutional support made him an exceptional recipient of the ORAU Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award.”

The Kenry lab seeks to improve patient outcomes and health by enabling more targeted, earlier and safer detection and treatment of cancer. To this end, the team adopts an integrative approach, which combines micro- and nanoengineering with machine learning, to design and build more advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tools and modalities.

“As a translational cancer nanomedicine scientist, I am eager to improve diagnostic technologies to facilitate earlier cancer detection and more timely intervention, particularly for underserved populations,” said Kenry. “Generally, women with ovarian cancer seldom develop any noticeable symptoms until the disease has progressed to a later stage. Unfortunately, current ovarian cancer screening methods still lack the necessary selectivity and sensitivity to detect this cancer at an early stage, and we hope we can further improve this situation with the support of the Powe Award.”

Walgreens plans to close a significant amount of underperforming stores in the US

essay topic for pharmacy

Walgreens is planning to close a substantial number of stores in the United States.

The pharmacy chain confirmed its plan to close underperforming stores in an emailed statement to USA TODAY Thursday morning after the parent company, Walgreens Boots Alliance, disclosed the news in its 2024 third quarter fiscal results.

In the statement, a Walgreens spokesperson said the company is repositioning its store footprint, noting that about 25% of its stores are not contributing to the chain's long-term strategy.

The spokesperson also said the company is working on a program to close a significant portion of these locations over the next three years.

Tim Wentworth, CEO of Walgreens' parent company Walgreens Boots Alliance, said in an interview with CNBC that the company now forecasts weaker consumer spending for the rest of the year.

How many Walgreens locations are closing?

Wentworth also said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that the company has not settled on a final number of locations to close .

Walgreens operates roughly 8,700 stores in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to its website.

Wentworth also told the Wall Street Journal that Walgreens will reduce its stake in primary-care provider VillageMD and will no longer be the company's majority owner.

Wentwort said the company is focused on improving its core business: retail pharmacy. The company is launching a "retail pharmacy action plan" that will "invest in and deliver an improved customer and patient experience across channels," according to the strategic review section of the fiscal results.

According to his interview with the WSJ, Wentworth said the company expects that it will be able to reassign staffers so that its U.S. retail footprint reduction "doesn't result in a meaningful loss of jobs."

Biden? Trump? The Politics of Talking About It at the Office.

Some companies have banned political discussions at work, but that might be easier said than done.

Former President Donald J. Trump on the left and President Biden on the right, both behind lecterns on a red, white and blue CNN stage.

By Sarah Kessler and Ravi Mattu

Offices across the nation — and Slack channels, the modern water cooler — were abuzz Friday morning with voluble opinions about the presidential debate from the night before. How bad was Biden’s performance? Should Biden step aside? Who should replace him? Can that even happen? Are voters more focused on performance than substance? How many times did Trump lie? Did Biden lie, too?

For most chief executives, presidential elections are a nightmare — they create division inside teams, take up valuable time and can turn into a big distraction.

Kim Scott, a former Google executive and the author of “Radical Candor,” described the sentiment of human resources executives who were at a recent gathering: “They are dreading this election because it’s going to kill productivity for months.”

So what’s the solution? The C-suite may want to just hit the off button. But that may be easier said than done.

Around the time of the 2020 election, a couple of small companies, Coinbase and Basecamp , made big news when they introduced policies that banned political conversations at work, prompting dozens of employees resign. But much bigger firms have since introduced similar policies without inciting the same mass departure or public backlash.

In 2022, Meta asked employees not to discuss the Supreme Court ruling on the constitutional right to abortion , and shortly after that added other topics , including elections. Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, followed protests by employees over the company’s cloud computing contract with the Israeli government with an announcement that noted, “This is a business, and not a place to act in a way that disrupts co-workers or makes them feel unsafe, to attempt to use the company as a personal platform or to fight over disruptive issues or debate politics.”
